An early 1990s interview with Jeremy Northam, from West Lancashire Evening Gazette (Sat 4th April 1992, p23), about his appearance in Appointment With Fear: House of Glass (an ITV anthology series.)

STRANGE things happen when Gerry Stafford—the last of the line—inherits his grandmother's family mansion.

The ancestral home takes on its own sinister character as soon as Master Gerald and his new American bride Sonia arrive to supervise its sale.

Even loyal house-keeper Mrs Gilbert acts oddly when she leaves Sonia to fend for herself alone on a dark and windy night.

Appointment With Fear: House of Glass (ITV, 8.50pm) is a ghostly chiller starring Lisa Orgolini, Jeremy Northam, Matyelok Gibbs and Mary Wimbush.

Lisa, who plays Sonia, found filming for the half-hour story was "sometimes quite scary."

"Most of our time was spent in a great big old house and I don't like being left on my own in big houses with lots of rooms!" admits Lisa, who is 28.

Fortunately, there was always the film crew there to take my mind off things. I could imagine the house (in Lymington, Hampshire) being very creepy at night. It's just as well that the family who live there have ten children to fill it, but even so..."

Actress Lisa admits that scary films have a spooky effect on her.

She says: "This is an old-fashioned ghost story. I admit I don't normally like to watch this kind of thing at home on my own. It's easier for me to be in one than watch one!

After I saw Hitchcock's 'Psycho' I never took a shower when I was alone in the house for many years."

Ironically in this new TVS film, Lisa actually played a scene in the shower, surrounded by a film crew for company! She says: "I was in a bathing suit and there were people around me spraying mist in the bathroom."

Lisa, who is from Los Angeles, turned down the chance to go to drama school in the States, preferring to come to England and study at drama school in London, where she is now based. Her father is a US film producer.

Lisa's television credits include Tell Me That You Love Me, Parnell and the Englishwoman, Campion, The Thorn Birds, and a leading role in the new series of Perfect Scoundrels from TVS, with Peter Bowles and Bryan Murray.

On stage she played alongside Julie Walters in Peter Hall's The Rose Tattoo with Patricia Hayes and her feature films including Shining Through and The Recruit.

Jeremy Northam (Piece of Cake, Journey's End and Fatal Inversion) plays Gerald, with Matyelok Gibbs (Maigret, The Bill, The Jewel in the Crown) as Mrs Gilbert the house-keeper and Mary Wimbush (Jeeves and Wooster, The Country Boy) as the ghost of Mrs Stafford.

Jeremy, 30, who plays the young heir to the Stafford family's long-established glass-making business, describes the film as "a good yarn."

The self-confessed thriller fan adds: "House of Glass plays upon the conventions of the thriller and the ghost story very well.

"I sometimes think telly takes itself too seriously and short films like this help to stop that happening.

"This is a good, simple story which is ideal for watching on a dark evening!"

Jeremy is the only actor in his family although his father, a retired academic, taught drama, and his mother did some chorus singing for a while.

The youngest of four children, Jeremy's eldest brother Chris is a pianist, brother Tim is a set designer and sister Kate is married with four children.

Jeremy's television career began in the summer of 1987 in 'Wish Me Luck' - he also had a leading role in the second series—and his other TV credits include 'Piece of Cake' and 'Journey's End'.

He spent two years at the National Theatre and in 1989 was winner of the Olivier award for best newcomer. Jeremy trained at the Bristol Old Vic and spent seasons in rep including a spell at Salisbury.

"I suppose I've been thinking about acting seriously since I was about 16. But I can't say it was something that crossed my mind before that.

"I thought it was kind of vanity really. I thought that you would have to think very highly of yourself, and in a way you do, but it's difficult to explain. You have to have a certain confidence."

Debbie is a cow toward Aaron when he brings up her dumping Sarah. Aaron enjoying himself with Shadrach and Del at Wishing Well (the others, eh). Chas has Aaron hang around Victoria (first scene between the two) and her mate Kayleigh instead of Del (because of her own insecurities about them getting on). It is with the girls that Aaron learns Carl ‘did the dirty deed’ with Del and Aaron is so ready to tell Chas that bit of news (to spite her of course).

Alden’s in a mood, you can tell from the way he huffs as he flips onto his back and stares up at the ceiling. You lie beside him in the darkness, listening to the sound of his breathing.

“You’re pissed I invited her to stay.” You say and Alden sighs.

“No.” He drawls out the word. ��I’m pissed you didn’t get her to tell Nick.”

He’s talking about Harper, Nick’s life partner. She’s been receiving gifts from a man calling himself Casanova, horrible intimate gifts. It’s been going on for months, Alden discovered earlier today, months without a word to Nick from neither you or Harper.

“It’s not my place to…” You begin but Alden cuts you off.

“We had dinner with them last week.” He hisses as he tilts his head towards you. “You both sat across from him and said nothing!”

“Alden.” You whisper fiercely so you don’t wake up your guest sleeping on the couch in the other room. “It’s a case, you know I can’t discuss my cases outside my department, the same way you can’t and I can’t force her to tell Nick if she doesn’t want to.”

“Lisa,” He says and you can hear the undertone of agitation in his voice. “How do you think he’s going to feel when he realises his friends, the people he thinks of as his family kept this secret from him?”

Despite what Alden may say he is fiercely protective over Nick Torres. He’d been hurt, paranoid and suspicious after Gibbs had left for Alaska and it had taken Alden months to start building that trust.

“Look I know it’s hard to understand but I get where she’s coming from…”

“Oh you do, do you?” He says cutting you off again. “Is someone sending you diamond earrings and dirty panties that I don’t know about?”

There’s silence then and Alden’s gaze lowers to your hands. You’re playing with your wedding ring, your thumb rubbing lightly over the band.

“Lisa.” He says, propping his head up on his arm. “Do not tell me the same asshole…”

“No.” You say resolutely, your gaze lowering to the peach sapphire residing in the fitting of your ring. “Nothing like that. It’s Kris, he started sending me letters while you were away.”

Kris. Your ex-husband, the one that’s currently in prison for trying to kill you. The fact he decided to contact you when Alden was on the run was no coincidence. He can only imagine what those letters to you must have said.

“How many?” He responds testily. “How many did he send you while I was away?”

“Three.” You say quietly. “You weren’t here so I took care of it myself.”

It feels like you’ve plunged a knife into his heart and twisted. He’s sensitive about the time he’d spent on the lam, about disappearing from your marriage, turning your life upside down and leaving you to deal with the FBI. Those letters they’re just another example of his failure. He wasn’t there to protect you the first time Kris came after you, he wasn’t there this time.

He says nothing as he turns onto his side, his back facing you. He squeezes his eyes shut as he crosses his arms over his chest. He knows why you didn’t tell him, you knew he would have gone to that prison and torn Kris’s fucking head off.

“Alden…” You say softly but he doesn’t want to talk anymore.  

 “I’m tired Lisa.” He says, his voice devoid of emotion. “I need to get some sleep so I can be up to meet Nick off that chopper in the morning.”

“Oh.” You whisper and he can hear the sadness in your voice. “I understand.”

But you don’t, not really because Alden, he’s a shitty a husband. You just haven’t realised it yet.

*Note: This post isn't about if this Ken in the Barbie movie is going to be queer but that he is inspired by a Ken doll that "accidently" became a queer icon. Ryan Gosling's Ken in Barbie(2023) is based on the famous best selling Ken doll, Earring Magic Ken, also know as Fey Ken or Gay Ken.

"Mattel had conducted a survey of girls asking if Ken should be retained as Barbie's boyfriend or whether a new doll should be introduced in that role. Survey results indicated that girls wanted Ken kept but wanted him to look "cooler". USA Today noted after the American International Toy Fair that the doll Soul Train Jamal was also wearing an earring that year. According to manager of marketing communications for Mattel, Lisa McKendall, "We tried to keep [Ken] as cool as possible." This generation of the Ken doll had blond highlights in his traditionally brown hair and was dressed in a lavender mesh shirt, purple pleather vest, a necklace with a circular charm and, as the name indicates, an earring in his left ear.

These clothing choices led to gay commentator Dan Savage joking that Mattel toy designers had "spent a weekend in LA or New York dashing from rave to rave, taking notes and Polaroids." He also suggested that little girls' idea of coolness was shaped by homoerotic MTV music videos, Madonna's dancers, and what ACT UP/Queer Nation members were wearing to demonstrations and parties. Donna Gibbs told the San Francisco Examiner in November 1993 that the team of (presumably straight) women who made the doll were surprised that gay men wanted him.

In July 1993, Dan Savage wrote an article on Earring Magic Ken titled, "Ken Comes Out." He noted in his article that, in addition to his outfit's perceived flamboyance, his necklace resembled chrome sex toys that queer people were wearing as charms at the time. Savage expressed feelings of ambivalence about Ken's new style, writing, "Queer Ken is the high water mark of, depending on your point of view, either queer infiltration of popular culture or the thoughtless appropriation of queer culture by heterosexuals [. . .] Queer imagery has so permeated our culture that from rock stars (Axl Rose and his leather chaps) to toy designers, mainstream America isn’t even aware when it’s adopting queer fashions and mores."

Kitsch-minded gay men responded to this press by buying the doll in record numbers, making Earring Magic Ken the best-selling Ken model in Mattel's history. The doll debuted in stores for around $11 (equivalent to $20.63 in 2021) and had completely sold out by the Christmas season, largely due to gay men buying the doll in droves. Due to high demand, Chicago's FAO Schwartz created a wait list, and, allegedly, some shops in San Francisco began to sell Earring Magic Ken for prices ranging between $17 (equivalent to $31.89 in 2021) to $24 (equivalent to $45.02 in 2021). (The latter claim was disputed in the Bay Area Reporter in October 1993 by the general manager of San Francisco FAO Schwartz. According to him, only a few gay men were coming into his store, and Earring Magic Ken was selling better in New York and Chicago than San Francisco.) Earring Magic Ken was also popular with gay men in the United Kingdom, and sold well at the toy shop Hamleys in 1993. Toy scalper Mr. Barger told the Wall Street Journal in 1996 that Earring Magic Ken was so popular that he was able to re-sell him to specialty shops at premium prices. Richard Roeper, writing for the Chicago Sun Times, referred to him as "The Cabbage Patch Doll of the summer of '93."

A major appeal of the doll for many gay men was that Mattel did not market it to them on purpose. Rick Garcia, director of Chicago's Catholic Advocates for Lesbian and Gay Rights, told People magazine in 1993 that the stereotypical dress was funny to him because he believed it was an accident, and that it would have offended him if it was purposeful. In 1993, many newspapers interviewed individual gay men in California to understand the phenomenon. San Francisco resident described Earring Magic Ken as, "a pariah setting foot in one of America's sanctuaries." Another California resident, Bill Harley, described Earring Magic Ken as, "A campy, funny thing to have." Laguna Beach resident Keith Clark-Epley had more reservations about the toy, saying that, "It's an uptight heterosexual male doll following gay fashion and who is still behind the times," and believed that calling the doll gay could potentially reinforce negative stereotypes about gay people." The More I've Looked Up On Irene Cara, The More She Reminds Me Of Michael Jackson:

I had already posted this on Reddit. But, I'll post it here too.

-Both Came From A Musical Family: Joseph had his own band, The Falcons, while Katherine wanted to be a country singer. Plus, on Katherine's side, Michael's related to Stevie Wonder. Then there's Irene's family; her father, Gaspar, was said to have brought merengue to the States thanks to being a saxophonist. Not only that but (according to Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/artist/6491165-Gaspar-Escalera ) he was also part of a record; Dioris Valladares's "Pa Bailar Na Ma". As for Irene's mother, Louise, she wanted to go into show business but her own parnets (Irene's grandparents) forbade it. Irene also had a brother who performed opera.

-Both Joseph And Gaspar Worked In Steel.

-Both families were of a struggling background.

-If Irene Really Was Born In 1959 (Her Birthday's Been Up For Debate Over The Years), She Would've Been 6 Months Younger Than Michael.

-They Were Child Prodigies: As small children, both Michael and Irene had showed their musical talents. Irene was able to play the piano by ear (like Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes did in her own childhood), went to classes for dancing and music. Meanwhile, Michael would show off his singing voice and join the Jackson 5 at around 5-6.

-The Wizard Of OZ: While Michael played The Scarecrow in "The Wiz" film adaption, Irene had played the role of Dorothy on the stage. Speaking of Diana Ross...

-The Supreme: As Michael was known for his relationship with Diana Ross, Irene had starred in "Sparkle", where the main musical group was loosley based off of The Supremes. Irene would also spoof the said trio in her "Girlfriends" video.

-A Connection To "Fame": While Irene's known as "Coco" from the original film, Michael's sister, Janet, was a part of the TV adaption, playing the character of Cleo.

-They Had Many Friends/Coworkers/Peers In Common: Andy Gibb, Stevie Wonder, Dom DeLuise, Sammy Davis Jr., James Earl Jones, Louis Armstrong, Donna Summer, Luther Vandross, Mr. T, Debbie Allen, DJ Bobo, Molly Meldrum, Laura Branigan, Tatum O'Neal and many more!

-We Are The World/Cantare, Cantaras: When, in 1985, Michael was doing "We Are The World" with Diana, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper and other known singers for charity, the performers of Latin America wanted in too. So, gathering at the very same studio as "We Are The World", A&M, they performed the song, "Cantare, Cantaras" ("I Will Sing, You Will Sing"). Jose Feliciano, Julio Iglesias, Cheech Marin, Menudo, Ricardo Montalban, Pimpinela, and Yuri were among the singers for this. Along with Irene, of course. Just to be clear, both songs were in 1985.

-Both Fell Victim To The Media: With Irene fighting for her royalties that her record company had withheld from her, she was ultimately blacklisted. Lies had spread saying she was a drug-addicted (while Irene did do cocaine brought upon by her proucers to help with her energy, she did kick the habit) diva who was difficult to work with. Then there's Michael who had the worst slander done to him. With all of this along with their respective court cases, both had seemed more tired, world-weary and arguably reclusive. That said, they still didn't lose their love for music.

-Shared Interests: Charity work, Old Hollywood/Old Movies, drawing, swimming, and song-writing. They also had interests directing their own films and writing stories.

-Shared Personalities: Shy, reserved, kind, down-to-earth, spiritual, silly, independent, creative, hard-working/(arguably) workaholic, private, stubborn and (in TVTrope terms) "adorkable".

-They Were Included In The 1985 Documentary, "That's Dancing".

-Both Were Nominees In The 1984 Grammy's.

-They Could Both Pull Off The Moonwalk!: Ok, with Michael, we all should be fully aware of his famous move. But Irene can pull it off too (and in heels!) as seen in her "Solid Gold" performance of "Breakdancing":

-As Mentioned By DJ Rob Blog: Michael Jackson’s death, June 25th, 2009, was on the 26th anniversary of “Flashdance” beating out “Thriller” on the Billboard Charts. Coincidently, Irene Cara’s own death, November 25th, 2022 was a week after “Thriller 40” album was released to the public.

-Snow White: It's no secret that Snow White was one of MJ's favorite characters. He even had her an the 7 Dwarves visit him back in the 80's:

Fast forward to 1989 where Filmation had made their (technically second) sequel to "Snow White" in the form of "Happily Ever After". There, Snow White was voiced by Irene.

season 4 tiva thoughts. honestly s4 is kind of snoozefest but we prevail. i sped through s4 since i skipped through a lot of ultra boring scenes. 

tony and ziva spending their summer together. her dad spying on them. her not even answering the question if they slept together or not. 

ziva going to disarm a bomb, tony saying it’s a bad idea, and when she asks why he’s following her he says he doesn’t know. i know why but we’ll let him remain confused.

there’s actually something :( :( :( about the scene where he says he is looking down her shirt and she mentions his secret gf. ziva just seems so melancholy instead of giving as good as she gets when he says that kind of stuff. 

ziva being worried tony is sick but he’s really just with his secret gf. 

them bickering about whether or not tim’s book is about them. spoiler: it is.

“lisa and her broken heart” that’s great meta about how melancholy ziva is this season. she’s worried about tony all the time, they don’t bicker the same, and they don’t even really hang out like they were during the summer gibbs was in retirement. the dude she is into dies and you really get to see how tony keeping this big secret drives a wedge between them compared to how much time they were spending together in s3 and the summer. 

big oof on ziva’s face at listening to tony tell jeanne he loves her. tim’s ‘come on. you can tell me what you’re feeling’ when talking about the case to abby while still panned on ziva. double oof.

drunk ziva ‘straight to voicemail like always when he is with her’ and ducky calling her out for monitoring him. 

“tony is with his girlfriend and you’re worried about him. what does this tell you?” ducky knows everything. 

honestly, i find season 4 to be one of the least interesting tiva seasons. but it is kind of interesting they start with tony goes to ziva’s place every week (only to drop it entirely), to oh tony is undercover in this relationship that mucks up his feelings, ziva finds someone she likes and he DIES, and then having this whole interaction about tim’s book in the elevator where it could never be them. except it is them. all while tony makes a mess with jeanne.
