Hanfu in Components: General Garment Terms (pt1)

Attempting to sort of reboot the hanfu in components thing I wrote for Newhanfu a while back in a better organized way, so I guess this is a series? Purpose is to provide a more systematic way for people to learn about hanfu terminology, which is extremely complicated and constantly changing, but has mostly settled into some agreed upon definitions among the hanfu community.

Note: This is probably going to make the most sense for people who have already been interested in hanfu for a little while but don't know the technical terms for what they're seeing in the pretty pictures. If you're just starting out this might be a little overwhelming, especially since hanfu vernacular has variations based on what time period you're talking about and stuff like that! But of course feel free to look at it anyway :>

Here are terms that you'll see a lot when referring to a general type of garment. These are the equivalents to 'shirt,' 'skirt,' 'pants' etc. in English, where it's telling you broadly what kind of a garment it is, but not really any details about its style or what it might look like. I will structure my definition headers as (traditional character)/(simplified character)/(pinyin)(tone) going forward. Also using images from Cloud9 as much as I can bc I don't wanna deal with citing image sources lol, shoutout to our models

WORDS ACTUALLY JUST MEANING "CLOTHING"

衣/衣/yi1 - General term for clothing. More often than not refers to a top/shirt or a robe, but can refer to clothing in general as well, especially in modern usage. The yi radical looks like this: "衤" Basically if a character has that symbol on the left, it’s probably related to clothing in some way.

服/服/fu2 - Also a general term for clothing. Slightly more formal/technical in tone imo. Usually combined with 衣 for 衣服 (more casual everyday way of saying clothing) or with 裝 for 服裝 (more formal way of saying clothing). Think the difference in tone between ‘clothes’ vs. ‘attire.’

TOPS (the clothing kind) & ROBES

衫/衫/shan1 - Shirt, unlined. Refers to a shirt/blouse in modern usage. Within hanfu, refers to a top (usually short, but sometimes long) that is unlined.

襖/袄/ao3 - Jacket/lined top. Refers to a parka-style jacket in modern usage (棉襖）. Within hanfu, refers to a top that is lined, typically on the thicker side. Can be long or short. More often than not it is worn as an outer layer.

袍/袍/pao2 - Robe. Refers to a top whose length extends past the knee. Usually robes are lined, but that’s not a requirement to be considered a robe. There is overlap with 衫/襖; aka a garment can be both a 袍 and a 衫 (long unlined robe) or a 袍 and an 襖 (lined robe), but not an 襖 and a 衫 (somehow lined and unlined at the same time, disobeys the laws of physics and logic, possibly quantum entity). 

深衣/深衣/shen1 yi1 - Literally ’deep clothing,’ also can be translated as robe, but more specific in that shenyi will typically be made up of a ‘top part’ and a ‘skirt part’ that are sewn together at the waist, rather than just being a really long top.

褙子/褙子/bei4 zi0 - Outer layer. Harder to define because it can refer to very different things depending on what dynasty you’re looking at. General rule though, it’s almost always an outer layer on a woman’s outfit.

BOTTOMS (the clothing kind)

裙/裙/qun2 - Skirt. Generally any garment that wraps around a person’s torso and covers the legs. 

褲/裤/ku4 - Pants/trousers. Similar to skirt except there are dedicated channels for each leg, aka there’s some separation happening at the crotch. Can be open or closed crotch, almost always worn under a skirt or robe.

Obviously there's a lot of other terms too but I'll get to them with time! Still a full time student, still learning about hanfu, blah blah blah. But yeah especially the more specific terms I will probably cover in a later post. Hope this is interesting enough for now :>

1. does scar have like heavy ptsd when he gets a bit *too* jumpy and accidentally kills some of the scientists? if so, does he feel guilt at all? yk, considering they ruined his and his friends lives.

2. where did that scar on martyns leg appear?

3. what *are* some of the tests these scientists do? if that can be revealed rn lol. (if so, you can just list one character and the experiments done on them. would be cool to know!!)

4. was grian captured first? how did his feelings change overtime if so? (if a different person was captured first, how did they feel?)

okay I’ve done my part to actually contribute to this au let’s gooooo 💥💥

1.) Yes, he’s 100% got PTSD. Every time he’s killed someone, it’s been an accident. And he feels absolutely horrible every time it happens because they’re people. Sure, they’ve treated him and his friends absolutely horrifically, and none of them will recover from the shit they’ve been through, but those are still people with families and friends outside of the facility.

2.) I assume you mean when, and I have no idea. I just thought it looked cool and wanted to reference some of cherrifire’s art. :)

3.) Uhhh I have no idea. This is goi bc to come as a shock, but I’m actually really squeamish with like.. needles and doctors and stuff. If you start talking about going to the doctor’s, I’ll immediately start feeling anxious. Luckily I have friends who aren’t squeamish with all that, and they’ve agreed to help me when I get to that point. Some of it does have to do with things like needles, and blood tests, and endurance and stuff like that, but others are more specific to what their powers are. So, for example, they’d test how far Impulse can teleport. They’d see how long Lizzie can make her shadows last. They’d test how far Martyn could hear and at what frequency he could hear at. You get the picture.

4.) Yeah, Grian was the first, but not by a very long period of time. Everyone was taken within a couple of days of each other, the whole process of their “collection” taking about a week. But for the few hours that he was the sole subject, he was scared out of his mind.

Ough my god SPEAKING of Mizuki's hyper-cheerful exterior, I was thinking about something recently!! When you compare her to the other Genki Girls of Project Sekai, there's a certain vibe difference between her and say, Emu or Saki. The vibe difference is, of course, that Mizuki is making an active effort to be as palatable as possible. But I noticed something more specific about that, that is, to me, equal parts cute and OW OW OW OW OW OW:

Mizuki totally acts like a kids' show character. Specifically, a Precure leader. (Which makes sense, given that Precure's almost certainly what MiraMagi Definitely Isn't, in the same way that TrickTrick Definitely Isn't TikTok.) Every kids' show protagonist is going to be niceys, obviously, they need to be good influences. But! There are still differences in the brand of niceys that each little kid franchise character embodies. And Mizuki's mask matches the Precure flavor just about perfectly...

What's most significant to me is that she's like, pushy about doing favors for her friends. Refer to her bullying Niigo into Going Out And Doing Stuff Because It's Good For Them. "Helpful to a fault" is a trait that Toei loves to give lead cures. You will have your pink cure who runs around helping everyone with a smile 24/7 (I am looking directly at Heart and Lovely especially), and you will have one of the other characters off to the side sighing something like "There she goes again, wearing herself thin because she is Just Too Nice. She doesn't know when to quit!".

There's also a second brand of "'helpful' is her one negative trait" cure, and that's the one who continually kills The Grumpy One with kindness, while the grumpy one in question thinks "Wow what a weirdo. Why are you so nice." (This time I'm looking directly at Peach, Heart and Lovely again, Miracle, and Star)

In general, she really often chooses to show her emotions in a very simple way, and it totally reminds me of how characters in anime for younger audiences tend to talk. When she's displaying 'really happy', she often takes a tone more akin to "announcing to the viewer" than "normal happy person". There's like, a lot of energy, and a sort of singsong tone, it makes me think of the recaps that tend to happen at the start and ends of Precure (and baby anime in general) episodes. The like, "Hi, I'm Firstname Lastname! I'm in 8th grade and this is my favorite thing! One day, a mysterious power turned me into a Precure, and now I fight bad guys!" thing. When she's displaying 'sad', she becomes a comical degree of mopey, and then bounces right back after a few seconds (refer to the "WAHHHHH MEIKO HATES MEEEEEE :(((((" card lol.) She also loves herself a good Noise No One Makes In Real Life... the breathy "a-haha..." sort of laugh when she's embarrassed, "Kyaa~!" when something cute catches her eye, drawn-out "Eeeehhhhhh?!" when she's shocked.

There's also a little bit of like, "irresponsible, but so cute about it that you can't get mad at her". Like in the Ena5 aftershow, where Ena's like "I'm glad you're here to make MVs again but don't demand a million drawings from me ok?", to which Mizuki is like "It's fiiine you can just pull an all-nighter for me :) can't you :)?". It reminds me of how half the lead cures are either Bad At Their Homework or Forget About It, and then wetly and pathetically and cutely beg the rest of the main cast to help them.

I dunno I just think it's. Extremely Mizuki to select the type of character whose worst flaw is "annoyingly nice and happy" as the basis for how she presents herself. If the person you pretend to be around others is totally perfect, it's weird and offputting (hi Mafuyu), so she has to display some kind of flaw. But being imperfect also opens her up to harassment, so of course she goes for the most hard-to-hate imperfection she can think of as her One Failing. And I also think it's Extremely Mizuki to have so much love in her heart for characters primarily designed to spread messages like "always be kind", "do the right thing" etc etc.

Mizuki is a little dweeb who likes cute low-stakes anime about peace and love on planet earth. And also she is not doing well mentally and all she wants is the peace and love on planet earth that her animes show. God. I love her

I hate the fact that Alastor’s reasoning for wanting to be a powerful sinner overlord is just... power? That’s it?? I wish the reason he made a deal with the devil was tied to historical context like not being able to become a radio show host due to the racism of the time. That desire could have slowly driven him to do anything to achieve his dream, leading to some really questionable actions for the devil (like cannibalism) which ultimately got him sent to Hell

What also pisses me off is that Viv didn’t even need to add the voodoo element . She could have just said that he practices dark magic with the devil granting him the knowledge as a reward for giving away his soul. Then instead of using voodoo symbols she could’ve replaced them with radio schematic symbols you know since he's referred to as the radio demon???

And don’t get me started on the whole Wendigo-deer-cannibal thing which is a huge misconception about Wendigo folklore in Native American culture which is also considered cultural appropriation due to how a creature from their culture has been co-opted and changed in ways that do not reflect their traditions

This is what critics and even fans I've seen mean when they say Viv is terrible at character design because it’s so clear she does Z E R O research

Oh boy, yes Alastor is a loaded character, he has so much wrong with him that if Viv just spent an hour or a week longer on thinking about, they'd be better versions than what we have.

Im going to use my own rewrite and my experience with the occult to best answer this. Bare with me folks. Lets take a deep dive into Alastor's character.

Alastor could very well have had his motivation be racially charged. He lives in an era where Jim Crow is rampant, it'd not hard to believe, that Alastor would want to prove a old white mf wrong by being the best damn radio host ever. This is where imma bring in my rewrite.

In my rewrite, i made Alastor dream of getting a radio show his whole motivation BECAUSE of the baseball games he'd over hear on Sundays with his Ma and Pa. The interworking of the mechanics [radio waves and the such] fascinated Al and so he went on to pursue a impossible dream. Alastor's parents whether their support is there or not, greatly affects where or not Alastor thinks he's doing the right thing or not, they are his conscience for better or for worse.

Then a jealous white guy "gives him an opportunity to prove himself". Only for it to be a cheap prank that make Al look like a fool. The prank can go from harmless and humiliating, to down right atrocious and evil. [im not spilling all the tea on Alastor's chapter, nice try, wait til it releases lmao].

Anyway you get the point

THIS is where the real motivations can come in. Its "justified" in Alastor's mind to murder these people; but ofc to the audience we think he should just run.

What he actually does is dependent on a few things.

THIS could be the story of Alastor but Vivzie keeps fucking around with the edge lord shit.

Onto the voodoo stuff.

Alastor's ties to the occult, more specifically Voodoo, is:

1, not shocking to me in the slightest.

and

2, incredibly offensive to not only Bipoc individuals but also other Occult practitioners.

We may not practice the same things but we will get pissed if a branch of the Occult is being used in media for the "oh so scary and evil trope".

This is one of those moments where Viv didn't even bother doing research.

Let me first explain what a closed practice is.

A close practice is an occult practice that is otherwise determined by your ethic background. If you are not born into it or invited, you may not be allowed to practice. Some practices do not give out Initiations or allow "outsiders" to practice.

Voodoo is a closed occult practice that has many branches,[yes like a government] most of which are all tied back to bipoc cultures, such as Cubans, Haitians, etc., They follow a certain code and ethics. For example: Those who are Haitian take part in Haitian Vodou who believe in the Lwa.

There is also a difference between Hoodoo and Voodoo.

Hoodoo is more spiritual and a way of mindfulness and superstition with folklore such as throwing salt over your shoulder and never placing your purse on the floor, while Voodoo is more religious and more polytheistic.

Hoodoo is also designated to those who are Black. So it doesn’t matter if you’re Haitian, Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean or even American; just as long as you hold African roots, you can participate in the practice.

Now that i have these explained what Voodoo and Hoodoo is, i can talk about how they've been demonize in media, even to this day, and why Viv is a dumbass for doing the same exact thing.

Lemme make one thing clear first.

Cultural appropriation is when cultural beliefs or traditions are stolen and slightly altered to be someone else’s idea in the name of a trend.

When we as a society adopt practices from outside of our own culture it’s important to be mindful and conscious about where they came from.

Appreciation doesn’t hurt anyone but appropriation does.

In America, Voodoo has been used to perpetuate damaging stereotypes of the black community and deepen the act of ‘othering’.

Newspapers and fabricated racial stories about Voodoo were used to portray black people as primitive and dangerous, and particularly to present black men as rapists of white women, framing Voodoo as the space in which they commit violent sexual acts.

This may explain one of the Jim Crow Laws but in a different light, since interracial marriage was illegal and black men could be beaten or worse, killed for it. I wouldn't be surprised if this was why, besides other racists illogical reasonings obviously.

The idea that Voodoo was something negative, violent, alienating and anti-white, was concocted by white supremacists, slave owners and colonists. Racists mfs basically

Sadly it was never sincerely questioned, and as a result the common perception of Voodoo remains negative and ill-informed.

Thus why we still see depiction of Voodoo and Hoodoo being used as "evil" in Princess and The Frog, The Child's Play film series, EVEN Batman, AHS, the list goes on and on and on, but now Hazbin.

In conclusion, Voodoo was seen as satanic, [Satanic Panic] and rituals were described as "summoning zombies, devils and spirits". Practitioners were seen as animalistic, violent, hyper-sexualized and barbaric. This played into the societal want to control and maintain the many racist laws that were in place. Voodoo was used to paint black people and the BIPOC community as a whole, as threats to civilization, to safety and to freedom.

As you can see the depiction and use of Voodoo nowadays is not in the best light nor has really ever been, Viv continuing to deflect the "you shouldn't do this, its racist and cultural appropriation" critiques, in order to have her WHITE idea of "spooky scary evil" magic.

Which may remind you DOES NOT EXISTS.

If a person claims to be doing "dark" or "black" magick, that mf is full of shit cuz that stuff doesnt exist. Its a cycle that never got broken and probably never will.

There is a form of magick called "shadow magick" however its purely for inward reflection on the mind, body and soul. Basically hardcore therapy but its all on your own and your "shadow self", which is a manifestation of your inner mind and self conscience thoughts. No you aren't actually summoning a shadow being, its all metaphorical and for therapeutic means. Please go see a therapist before ever performing this type of practice on yourself. You may find out things about yourself you do not like.

Also please do not begin practicing the Occult just because you might think its edgy or cool, Occult practices can be dangerous if you don't know wtf you are doing or know the basics. They are also not used for "funsies". Think of it like any other religious practice, be respectful with it.

Do your research and please for the love of the gods, do not claim to have supernatural abilities, you will be laughed at by others in practice.

Now lets talk about something that i love, Cryptids, specifically Wendigos.

Wendigos are not deer creatures, that is the Hollywood version of Wendigos, because real ones are butt fucking ugly.

The wendigo is part of the traditional belief system of a number of Native tribes, including the Ojibwe, the Saulteaux, the Cree, the Naskapi, and the Innu tribes.

The Wendigo is described as:

-being an emaciated corpse

-like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave

-Lips being tattered and bloody, or unclean and suffering from not eating flesh

- it gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition

 Blame Filmmaker Larry Fessenden,

He was the reason it became a huge thing.

He claims that a teacher in school originally told him a wendigo-like story about a deer monster, which he combined in his head with the wendigo tale from "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark."

Then later, the classic Wendigo story by Algernon Blackwood, creating his own mythology of the beast that he used in creating a 2001 movie simply titled Wendigo.

It was a weird horror movie and didn't even relate too closely to the myth, with the monster barely appearing.

Larry was unhappy with how the suit turned out because it was rushed, but the image caught on big from that point.

So can we all collectively say FUCK YOU LARRY.

Sure I'll bite, what are your thoughts on Nightwing?

You do not know what you have just done <3

So first of all, I was a teen titans kid: specifically StarFire. She was my home girl, she was an alien existence with strange customs and unique way of speaking and she was sweet and had trouble understanding others and I was obsessed. And…. She likes Robin, aka Dick Grayson, the OG.

Back then, Robin was cool but he wasn’t my favourite, but it was the first time I can really recall him catching my attention,, mostly because he had Kori’s attention and I loved Kori.

Honestly I didn’t really get into DC much. I was a Marvel prefereer for a while (<- lies, I just liked spider-man like literally everyone else) and though I had heard of the batfamily before in passing (an animation YouTuber I liked did some stuff for them once or twice) they didn’t mean much to me.

For me it was Batman and Robin,,,, and Robin was Dick Grayson.

I don’t really remember how it happened, but I do recall somewhere 2ish years ago that something prompted me to go searching for Nightwing’s Wikipedia page.

Now those of you NDs know what happens when something catches your attention in that oh-so-very-peak way and you enter what I like to call Stage 7.

I, no joke, read every single wiki article and post I could find anout Dick Grayson for 24 hours straight. I didn’t sleep, I barely ate, and I don’t remember anything other than the endless hunger for knowledge until I inevitably collapsed.

So,,, why?

Well honestly it’s rather complex!

I don’t talk too much about myself online, mostly because I don’t feel much of a need to, but I’m sure you can glean a few things: mostly that I’m a 1st gen immigrant with autism, asexuality and a enby identity (just like half the population on tumblr lmao) and that gave/gives me a whole cocktail of fun issues and perspectives of the world.

I’m not sure how much you know about Dick’s story or personality, but simplifying it down to a single sentence it would probably be this: An endlessly angry child has forged himself into a kind and charismatic hero for the sake of other people.

He is angry, and bitter and fighting so goddamn hard to be kind. He is overtly sexualised by people in-universe and in-fandom. He gives away all of himself even if he doesn’t realise he does. He is on a never ending journey to meet, match, and exceed the expectations placed upon him even to the detriment of himself and others. The bar grows ever higher.

People have an unconsciously bad habit of comparing ourselves to others and it is generally agreed upon that to live a healthy life you will have to spend the entire time fighting against that habit. The fight never ends as we never stop interacting with each other, but it does get easier with time. This pinprick point of tension is a core element of a lot of the stories told when it comes to Nightwing interacting with other characters, and a running theme throughout my own life.

For a very long time I competed against the world, against my family, against my friends, against the characters in stories I was told, basically everyone. I was the underdog, I was always fighting, and soon enough I was winning just as much as I was loosing. It was fun and it made me miserable because no matter how well I did the was always another person was better. I was never the best, I couldn’t be, and I hated myself for it… Until I realised the standards I held myself too so loudly and proudly started making my friends miserable too.

(To be honest I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop trying to raise the bar for myself higher, but I sure as hell know better than to make that other people’s problems. It’s an ongoing WIP against a very human flaw in myself, just as it is for Dick.)

Another element of his character that appeals to me is the anger; specifically that he is not seen as angry much anymore.

As a character his anger is justified. It is righteous even. The world took from him, hurt him, and continues to challenge him even now. He has every single reason to be bitter and full of rage,,, and he is! Except also no he isn’t.

The general current interpretation of Dick is as a playful and kind older brother figure.

He is flawed sure, but in a way that makes him more ‘approachable’. He is the comforting Robin; He’s the one you’d go to after a breakup to cry and eat ice cream or to go gush about your favourite hobbies to. He is the mediator of the batfamily, managing the emotions of both himself and others (especially Batman). The endless bright burning rage has been buried beneath a soft exterior, he has sanded down his own edges. He controls and seems to give away just enough to make him feel grounded, but never enough to feel like he’s truly known.

One of the worst part about growing older for me is how terribly easy it is to understand other people now. Rarely do the people who hurt us the worst want to do so, the villains of this world are seldom (if ever) people you meet in real life. It’s so fucking easy to hurt each other. It’s so fucking easy to blame people when they hurt you. To make monsters out of molehills.

And yet!

And yet…

I understand. I wish I didn’t, but I do. I am so very very angry, but my kindness is a thing with teeth I tamed with love, and it eats my anger for breakfast.

The way I love and he loves, in my mind, is the same. I understand and he understands in a way I want too, and it’s so easy to let people hurt us because of that. Depending on the version you’re reading of him, maybe that person who hurts him is a super villain, or a friend, or an obliviously obtuse civilian or even the batfamily and Batman himself (Spyral, WFA Joker arc, Grant Wilson, Tarantula, being Batman during the Bruce lost time-stream arc, all of Jason’s existence, etc.). Either way, same outcome: you love and care for people who hurt you and are flawed.

Nevertheless, Dick Grayson, aka Robin, aka Nightwing, has been around for more than 80 years now. His story has been told hundreds, thousands, millions of times. It’s been twisted and shifted and re-told all over again. And while his tenants core stays the same (save for a bad writer of course) he gets different lighting for every occasion. Playing and talking about him is more flexible in a way a lot of characters with a single cannon source (I.e. books and movies) are not. His existence gives me a lot of room to play and project.

He can be the good big brother, the proud leader, the angry teenager, the betrayed son, the beautiful idol, the grand hero, or any mask the story requires him to play. That flexibility is within the core of his very character. He loves, he is angry, he is so terribly inhuman in all the best ways he is not, and I love him because of that.

TLDR: He is relatable to me and I fuck with that <3

Hi, I would like to share my opinion about the idea of Lucky Clover.

Well, let's start from the beginning, Clover's death at the end of the plot is completely logical and justified, he will not be able to live in the underground, due to many factors including the guard. But if someone decides to take him in?

1) Martlet - maybe she's a kind monster who invites Clover to stay... But kindness alone cannot raise a child, after all, she is not attentive and clumsy, she has not even decided on her life direction. (I imagine how Undyne, in his manner, suddenly comes to visit Martlet and sees Clover in front of him.)

2) Ceroba is one of the most interesting characters, it's always been fun for me to watch people make her into Clover's foster mother. Although she respected him at the end of the trip, it seemed to me that she didn't care about Clover, and all these tears and sadness were from the fact that her plan had failed. Even if Clover stays with her, Ceroba may try to implement her plan again.

3) Starlo is one of my favorite characters. He may get along well with children, but he's not good as a parent (Starlo is that cool uncle who doesn't have a family). But even if you take this into account, the upbringing of a child by the management of the Wild East and his gang will not be well suited. Although he matured at the end, he didn't grow up enough to raise a child.

So the death of Clover is not a bad option for others...

I'm going to assume that you are referring to an AU where Clover lives in the Underground with their friends when you use the term "Lucky Clover AU," because the Lucky Clover AU specifically belongs to @/northstarscowboyhat and I am not them. Any questions specific to that AU should be directed towards the correct recipient.

As for my thoughts on this ask/Clover lives in the Underground AUs...

I think everybody who has a "Clover Lives" AU understands that it's a bit of a stretch for Clover to live peacefully in the Underground. There is the Royal Guard to be concerned about as well as any random monster attack that could do them in or expose them. Plus, they still have an interest in stopping Asgore. Would Clover be willing to set aside their mission and live with their friends in peace or would they try for Asgore? What about when Frisk shows up? Would that change the choices they make? And so on. This stuff is self-indulgent. I like the idea of Clover getting to live life and enjoy themself among their friends though, especially because it's implied that they didn't have a happy home life on the Surface.

I heavily disagree with the points that you raised as to why they couldn't live with their friends though.

Martlet may be clumsy but she's not inattentive. At all. Out of all of Clover's friends, she's the one that goes above and beyond to be there for them. In Pacifist, she accompanies them 3-5 times throughout their journey through the Underground: on Ava (optional, you can drive her away by fighting her instead of continually sparing), in the Dunes before the Wild East, throughout the Ketsukane estate, at the end when she's escorting Clover to face off against Ceroba, and (if this is a Flawed Pacifist Run) escorting them to King Asgore like she promised. In one of her Talk dialogues, she brings up how she's a homebody; yet here she is on the other side of the Underground, accompanying Clover and ensuring their safety when she could just... report them to somebody else and pass along the bill. She recognizes that Clover is a child and treats them the most accordingly out of the Main Three (compared to Starlo and Ceroba). The worst she did was abandon them after Ava crashed to go sit by a cactus for an hour and feel miserable for screwing everything up, and even then she tries to make up for it by making sure that Clover isn't alone for the rest of their journey (she had to be put in jail so she couldn't accompany them in the Wild East and only stopped accompanying them when Ceroba, a trusted acquaintance, offers to do it for her). This is just what I'm remembering off the top of my head. So, no. Martlet isn't inattentive and would do a great job of looking after Clover.

(Also, while we don't know her fate at the end of the Flawed Pacifist Run, we do know that she quit being in the Royal Guard in the True Pacifist ending because of Clover. I imagine she'd do the same if they were living with her and would try to find another job.)

Ceroba did come around to liking Clover by the end of the Steamworks, though. A lot. So much so that she was shaking and crying as she was about to deliver the final blow on them in their fight (before she goes into her Devoted form). She goes through with it only because she's so damn devoted to Chujin that she'd do anything to make him happy (even go against her judgement as a mother and inject her daughter with an experimental serum because she felt like it'd make Chujin proud). This is Ceroba "I save the tears for the moments that matter" Ketsukane that we're talking about. Crying over a human that she had just met the same way she cried over her dying husband and daughter. What do you mean she didn't care about Clover in the end?

Also, part of Ceroba's arc is learning to carry on her husband's legacy in other ways than with some super serum that'll "save the monsterkind" or whatever. Chujin did more than that: He helped people. Gave corn to Dalv. Taught Martlet woodworking. Tried to make existence in the Underground as easy for everybody as possible. That's the version of Chujin that she should be looking up to and carrying forward, not the version of him that wanted to make a super serum straight out of a sci-fi story. Now, do I like the idea of Ceroba having moments where she considers killing Clover for their SOUL so she can make Chujin's serum? Yes. But that's from the perspective of how healing and moving forward in life sometimes has you sliding backwards. I don't think she'd reenact her/Chujin's plans to make the serum just because Clover is conveniently there and Martlet and Starlo are conveniently not there. She's learned how much her tunnel visioned thinking got her in trouble.

(Plus I can't see a world in which Martlet and Starlo would let her be around Clover while she still has Chujin's research in the basement. Both of them want Ceroba to move forward and to also protect Clover. That stuff would all be destroyed long before Clover would ever get to stay over at her house. So, no chance of using Chujin's research to start this mess all over again.)

Starlo may not be the most responsible but he's still good with kids and not just in a "fun uncle" way. Ceroba trusts him enough to let him hang out with Kanako on a regular basis and watch movies together. On their missions, Starlo spends most of his time encouraging Clover and trying to see the best in them/their actions no matter what they do (you can make Clover screw up everything: miss with the gun/miss-time each shot with the practice round against the dummy, be too slow to draw on the dual, choose to save Ed instead of the five others on the track, and he'll still reward and encourage Clover for it). That's the sort of behavior you want to exhibit with kids, trying to lift them up instead of berating them. (I'm not gonna get into how some of Starlo's treatment of Clover, such as giving them the gun, is because he sees them more as a human than as a kid because that's more headcanon territory, but I do have thoughts on it.) Plus at the end of True Pacifist, you see him reaching out to his family and taking those first steps to be more responsible. He's helping around the farm again and reconnecting with his family instead of just shutting them out. He knows how to handle kids and is also becoming a more mature person.

(Also, Clover can take care of themself. They got themself up Mt. Ebott and journeyed through a lot of it on their own. They handled the puzzles and fought their own battles, they're not helpless. Even before they ended up in the Underground, there is a lot of evidence that they know how to take care of themself, like knowing how to cook basic foods. They're not a helpless toddler.)

All of Clover's friends developed over the course of the story. Martlet is taking charge of her life instead of just drifting through it. Starlo is being more responsible. Ceroba is healing and starting to move on from Chujin. They aren't the same people that they were at the beginning of the story. In my mind, none of them are perfect parent material. Clover wouldn't see any of them as their mom/dad. But they can still be guardians to them, even if they're imperfect ones.

Lastly, the sentence that you concluded with really bothers me. "So the death of Clover is not a bad option for others..." It sounds like you're saying that Clover's death is also a matter of convenience for their friends, like having them around would have caused them too much trouble. That is not a stance that I agree with, full-stop. Just because having them around would make life difficult for their friends doesn't mean that it isn't worth it in the end. Their life has more value than whatever difficulties it would entail for their friends and if Clover had chosen not to sacrifice themself, Martlet and Starlo and Ceroba would have raised them.

I'm noticing an uptick in comments complaining that most of the current WIR fandom content is Turbo instead of the other characters and, like... you guys know you can search other characters by their specific tags, right??? Or exclude Turbo from search results by temporarily blacklisting him in your filtered tags?

Idk, it's just weird to me to be discouraging towards people making fandom content just because it's not the specific content you want to see, like, it's ok to want to see other content, but complaining about how other people aren't catering to your tastes enough instead of just making the content you want to see yourself is kinda bad vibes, y'know?? (And that's not to say that I think those comments are intended out of malice of course, I really don't think they are, I just wanted to point out that it can come off as a little entitled, as well as discouraging towards people who just want to draw Turbo, which is something that should be fine if that's what they want to do. Fandom should be fun for everybody, and there's lots of tools available to curate your experience with it!)

Requestober 2024 Sketches

Doing the full season this time around! The entire mixed bag o’ candy haha

Day 1 had my beautiful boys!! ♥ I’m so happy that Yanderapy took the lead this year ah! It’s too bad I’m so out of practice with them haha, unconfident lines, but the idea was solidly in place from the word go - this was really the only image that came to mind for them, their weird dynamic hehe <3 Made for each other! I am glad their expressions came together so well in the final version, though I didn’t get to show Micchan kneeling! That’s alright tho ♪ Cute enough here hehe

Day 2 got a lot of notes! Kabu’s clothing design is So complex lol, just toss him behind Larry who’s like second nature to draw, suits are so so simple in comparison haha ♪ Still only ended up hiding bits of him! He did end up with his shoe on the outside of Larry’s, boxing him in that little bit <3 And look! His smirk!! As well as the “hiragana” on his sleeves while I was still under the impression that it was text and not Flame Texture lol

And yes, as you can see, I ended up going with the alt doodle, they got more! I was quite tempted by Larry holding Kabu since he’s so tiny lol, but that would’ve required drawing his details! No! Hide him!! The pose is fun and silly and cute tho haha, very plush-coded ♪ And then also a little smech for funsies <3 Just to follow up their staring-at-each-other-in-a-gay-way they ended up with ♥ Rather a fan of Kabu’s hands pulling Larry in :)

Day 3′s was such a pose change!!! Mostly for Edgar, though he’s still kneeling here, inexplicably haha - the angle changed for the final version, and both of their head angles and just, ah, nothing more than a general outline of what I was going for. I’m pleased with both tho! I think the final is much more clear and readable, but there’s always a bit of fun with Edgar looking down/Scriabin looking up haha. I suppose it’s more appropriate than an angel would be looking down on a devil, isn’t it? Haha

Day 4 was another easy one at least, the pose immediately came to mind to show off Nny’s clothes on an even ganglier, thinner frame haha. Like I said, I really tried for more fullbodies this year, so I had to give the tiny version a proper swing on-page! Ran out of room for the larger one, but I really wanted to draw him holding his shoe with his hand haha. You can see the goopmonster on his shirt here too! :D I think his annoyed face is quite cute hehe <3

Day 5 was practically a freebie, and I took absolute full advantage hehehe ♪ If I get the prompt of “soft” of course I’m going to opt for plushies! I’m back in my Webkinz era, and Tala is big big big on Webkinz as well :) And her being a plushie has something of an impact there too lol, but it was really fun to look over all my little guys! I ended up having an extra handful of thoughts about all of them so they’ll be getting their own post(s) :D Good too, since I didn’t talk much about Embroidery’s closet cosplay haha

Day 6 was actually a bit of a question mark for me at first! :0 Not as though I don’t love when Edgar has to clean up Scriabin’s self-inflicted problems haha, I just wasn’t sure what it should be! Making it seasonal helped a bit there - lots of sticker burrs around here when we go walking haha. The bonus ended up being a digital-only, but it was a good motivator to finish these, and then the full poses came to mind - I’m not sure why I was more excited to work on full body poses, but I really was! Maybe the success of meeting my self-imposed challenge haha

I ended up scrapping the alt since it reminded me a little too much of one of the ‘22 reqs - trying to keep things fairly fresh! It was also a little too cartoony haha, where would Edgar suddenly pull such strength from! This doesn’t look like a dream! At least it wouldn’t have been a nightmare of Scriabin being hurt :’) Rescue!

Day 7 was another insta-idea! Really going back and forth on those lol, it sprouted into my head fully formed! This was actually one of a couple I wrote down as I was away from my notebook while brainstorming, so it came back as a mini script; one of more dialogue-heavy ones! Chicken or egg, I wonder, hmm. I always draw Smoker with her sleeves up even though she usually wears them down haha, I dunno. Had a heck of a time with Angie’s hair! I tend to make hair super super fluffy but hers is long and straight and presumably weighs itself down! Doesn’t floof! You’d think having heavy hair myself would incline me towards knowing anything about it but nope lol

Little bouncy concepts haha, and poor Mousey so jealous in the middle, surrounded with them having the most fun!

Day 8 was fairly simple with such a focused ask of them eating Specific Food - can do! Chibis just felt right for such a cute food haha. Would Edgar have a crepe pan, I wonder... I suppose a lot of it comes down to the batter, I haven’t made crepes in such a long time so I wouldn’t know anymore haha

Day 9 featured the slouchy throne! You can see I like the little leggies haha, I did make it a touch more proportional in the final version but who can resist the sillies! Had to draw it and Mettaton separately so I could easily see their silhouettes, I think it all came together in the end fairly well :) Had one heck of a time getting the bottom of his shoes to play nice, but I’m proud of how it turned out!!

Day 10′s, who can resist skelehugs ♥ No I! Not me!! The original had them a lot more upright, I’m glad I went with my note of leaning them back a bit more. Also had Papyrus’ legs on either side of Sans, protective <3 I do like both, but I think they look a bit more reasonably comfortable in the final version, figuring out contact points with one of Papyrus’ legs all the way to one side was too much haha. No boots on the couch! I think they look a bit younger in the final version too, maybe from their eyebrow expressions? Interesting how such small changes can make a big difference ♪

Day 11 was originally going to feature a bunch more Pokemon!! Several of my pink-and-purple faves all gathered around MewTwo <3 Flaafy and Musharna and Sableye my beloved 💜 And of course Whismur!! Can’t but Whismur all the time haha, but in the end I opted to go for the simpler(?) option of just the two ‘mons interacting

Whismur is so spooked by you, even lying down!! Even tho I drew it so I can see it right in front of me, I just can’t imagine MewTwo lying down to investigate haha. More posing changes! Lot of ‘em this year. Pls to quiet, cats have very sensitive hearing, you don’t need to shout

Day 12 started off with probably the Correct Amount of confusion lol, considering even @cutiebetutie​ didn’t expect this to be the matchup lolol, still deeply hilarious to me. But hey, what was I going to do, question a crackship?? Do I look like the kind of person who would say no to exploring some possibilities? Of course I had to give them a scope lol

Haha, “Alt” in quotes as I knew this would actually be the full version, the handholding is cute but where’s the dynamic! There is something there after all! I think so anyway, some tiny tiny sliver that they could start from, and what more foot in the door do you really need? If Nny’s on his charm that drew Devi in, I don’t see why someone a little more airheaded like Jake couldn’t be beguiled haha, if he lasts long enough for that ♪ It’s very tense! I wish him well, I wonder if he could protect himself... Just cut and run, Jake!! Makes for an interesting suspense, that’s for sure haha

Day 13‘s kigurumis!!! Yay!!!! Smol and I successfully wore ours for Halloween this year, we’re them fr fr haha, definitely one of my favourites from this season <3 <3 They’re so cute! Biggest change from here to there is probably where the legs start/end haha, kigurumi have funny little legs hehe. And also Papyrus’ gloves! Sans ended up without any, I can’t resist a hand plate here or there ♪ Also him closing his one good eye to pun about was an accident until it wasn’t haha, just another excuse to do a touch of rereading :3

Day 14‘s turned out so good for how cramped the sketch was!!! Gaster’s hardly there at all! Which is appropriate in its own way haha, filling in the rest of his details was pretty fun tho :) Papyrus looks a lot more desperate in this version which I do like, but him openly enjoying himself is very sweet, who could deny him that <3 Quite pleased with how his arm and hand posing came together in the end as well, fairly minor changes but I think it all flows together much nicer :D

Day 15′s word bubbles turned out way cleaner in the sketch than the final version?? Calls for more practice I suppose; it is asymmetrical, but it does look nice! Maybe needed more colour swatches haha, more and more rows! Edgar’s unimpressed look in the final version is quite good I think but there’s almost a kind of urgency with no eyes behind blank glasses hmm, they both have their merits! I applaud everyone who caught Scriabin holding the bi flag as his swatches! :D Good eye!

Day 16 began The Sleepies lol, I was a bit tired while doodling the first go and it uhm. Well. I mean. You can see lol. S’a bit goofy haha

The alt was much much better! I did end up leaving out the grass which I’m a Little disappointed about - feels too manicured, too sterile in the final version! But I really couldn’t figure a way of adding a bit of visual noise that wouldn’t look flat as well! Minecraft, eh, lol. I am quite pleased with how round Moomin turned out tho :D He looks like a marshmallow in the final version! Yay!

I actually doodled Day 17′s concept before 16 since it came to me so strongly - I do kind of like how much more upright Mob is here, him being as hunched over as he is in the final version adds to the moodiness of the piece I feel. He really is such a good boy! I don’t wish him dark and upsettings!

Day 18‘s didn’t get a paper sketch as I was verrryyyyy tired and had no energy to scan, so skipped the step that would make scanning necessary haha. For all that, I do rather like the digital sketch tho! I think Snufkin’s left leg is a bit better proportioned, and his expression is maybe a bit cheekier? Moomin’s perfect, no notes haha. I also ended up really liking their tail expressions, how Snuf’s is kind of straight and flat while Moomin’s is very roundy hehe <3

I know I said Day 20 doesn’t count but I mean, it’s on the same page! It got the “Day 20″ label! Sketch can go here why not haha. Happy belated Ace Week! I thought it was fun to put a bunch of pink lovehearts around the big central ace heart for me specifically hehe 💜💗

I mentioned in the tags that Day 26‘s original concept was too big to try to do all at once and ahhhh I wish I’d been able to swing it!! I wish I’d been able to do the whole thing!!!! I love scenes like this the most!! Little isometric rooms with little isometric characters all chatting and interacting and being cute and silly and tiny!! I love that! Alas, it had to stay a sketch, but here it is!! Can you recognize everyone here? The main three got the center, but who could the rest be :3c And what of their costumes! Hehe ♪

Still fighting back the sleepies for what ended up being the final version so the dialogue was left much more vague than the caption haha, the aliens don’t even have feet here! I suppose they are meant to be in fish costumes lol, it tracks that only the fully-human Captain’s legs would end there, but definitely not intentionally done so lol. I like ZEX’s expression here so muuuuch ahh I wish I’d been able to capture it a bit better in the digital version! Always something for next time haha

I actually ended up drawing Day 30′s sketch very very last, so this was the last doodle of the season! Me, projecting my tiredness onto the Vargases? Nooo <3 Another one that ended up very very different from the final version, I just needed Something down to paper and out of my head to work with really - I knew even while drawing this that I was going to end up with something very different haha. Sometimes hand just does whatever it wants pft. The dialogue was the star of the show here! And you can see what Scriabin was up to, obscured by the couch haha

Day 31, penultimate sketches for the final day! I really do love Scriabin hiding behind Edgar - wants to be included but not That close, very much with Edgar in the way of anything bad happening to him haha. More pose changes! I like both versions, Todd holding Shmee for comfort or him spilling out of his lap as he focuses all his attention on Joel <3 Both cute in different ways!

Cats are still not one of my strong-suits, but I have been drawing them a bit more recently! Admittedly of the cartoon variety, but even that has had some effect I think! Like their little triangle noses, and the way their ears scoop inwards, and whiskers - little things! I like it! I had fun with these little concept poses, Joel kind of curiously huddling on Edgar’s chest, looking at the world from a safe vantage spot haha. Hold him gently! He deserves it!

the amount to which I am furious on Normal's behalf is perhaps too much but also this that this kid is going through with no emotional catharsis or support from the people around him is awful. perhaps there's my "odd one out of the friend group" experience bleeding in here but like. hhhhrrrrrraaaaaaggggggggggggggggGGGGGGGGGGG if he doesn't keep throwing hands or start throwing words at everyone (except probably Scary right now) next ep I might start doing it for him

Had a weird Hollow Knight-related dream a couple days ago, so I decided to draw a major scene I remembered from it dgsgshf
