“Light Haiku” and Enlightenment (Essay)

In Japanese poetry, the five and seven syllables have unique meanings. I can't explain it clearly, but arranging the letters in this way makes me feel ``calm.'' The same is true for haiku and tanka.

When I was in elementary school, I once tried to write a haiku, but all I could come up with was one mediocre haiku, and I thought, ``Maybe I don't have the talent for haiku?'' However, fortunately, I trained in writing short sentences at university and was able to write haiku.

Since then, I have been writing haiku for about 30 years, but I have never had any trouble writing haiku.

On June 18, 2023, I was in a traffic accident. Fortunately, I wasn't seriously injured, but right before the accident, I took a photo of a yellow flower I saw and used in a haiku poem. (I enter with a haiku and photo as a set) A few tens of seconds later, I had an accident. If I hadn't taken the photo, I wouldn't have had the accident. The 10-odd seconds it takes to take a photo made the difference.

Since then, my haiku has become lighter than before. That doesn't mean it's bad. Perhaps the enlightenment that even writing poetry was risking one's life led me to write lighter haiku.

“軽い俳句”と悟り（エッセイ）

日本語の詩歌で、５音節、７音節には独特な意味がある。はっきりとは説明できないが、このように文字を並べると、「落ち着く」のである。それは俳句、短歌とも同じである。

私は小学生の頃、俳句を書こうとしたことがあるが、たったひとつの凡庸な句しか浮かばず、「自分には、俳句の才能がないのか」と思ったものだ。しかし、大学で短い文章を書く訓練をしたのが幸いし、俳句が書けるようになった。

以後、３０年ほど俳句を書いてきたが、句を書くこと自体に苦労したことはない。

２０２３年６月１８日、私は交通事故に遭った。大きな怪我でなかったのが不幸中の幸いだが、私はその事故の直前、目にした俳句に使う黄色い花の写真を撮った。（私は俳句と写真をセットにしてエントリーする）その数十秒後、事故にあったのだ。もし写真を撮っていなければ、事故には遭わなかった。写真に要する１０数秒の違いが明暗を分けたのだ。

以後、私の句はそれまでより“軽く”なった。それが悪いという意味ではない。詩歌を作ることさえ命がけだということが解ったという悟りが、より軽い句を書くことに繋がったのだろう。

To avoid disappointment: I don't write for the big ships because

a) I am generally not a shipper and

b) they tend to be m/m, and as a bi woman, my main interest is writing m/f and f/f. It is important to me to write female protagonists, and I prefer to write from a female point of view—her feelings/wants/desires and sexuality without the detour of projecting them onto a man.

Apart from that, I love myself a good crack fic and rare pairs, and you will definitely find those. I only started writing fanfic in 2022, and I spent most of that time writing a longfic called "The Light of Stars". I am fairly proud I saw it through, and the sequel is in the making (apparently, people liked it: Can I just say how excited and grateful I was when someone gifted me the Literary Badge? Thank you, you know who you are 🥹).

TLoS is a Morpheus x OFC fic, but it is not a self-insert or Y/N-fic. I am fairly prickly about that distinction because fandom's tendency to throw them into the same pot regularly drives me up the wall. I write OCs professionally (albeit in a language other than English), so the assumption that they are all straightforward self-inserts always seemed fairly odd to me…

I also love writing short-form poetry—you might find the odd one here, too.
