Chapter 18: Of Lieutenants and Losses
Tumblr media
“You used to tell me that to face death was an honour. That standing with me on the deck of La María healed your losses…”
Lesaro snorted, but would not look at him.
“But that was a long time ago, no?” Salazar was rueful. “Yet I have not forgotten your words, that first day we sailed. You swore loyalty to me, Gui. You said that all the privileges of living in Seville were nothing compared to the privilege of sailing under your friend’s leadership –”
“Do not throw my words in my face!” Lesaro grimaced in disgust. “I am not that man anymore!”
Read from the beginning here.

Officer Miguel Magda
Five Fun Headcanons about life pre-Dead Men Tell No Tales, and a Sad One
1. Officer Miguel Magda likes to play chess, and is also a very good cardplayer. Sometimes, Officer Moss thinks he has to be cheating, because he wins a lot. But the truth is Miguel is just that good. Also, he is far too proud to cheat.
2. You can’t pull pranks on La María Silenciosa. You just can’t. You would be punished in front of the entire crew if you were caught. And if Capitán Salazar even suspected that someone was pranking him, he would line up every man and personally whip each one of them, until someone broke down and confessed. “A Strict Ship is a Safe Ship”, he affirms. So, if you were going to pull off a prank… you would have to be really, really, really subtle.
3. To this day, no one knows what caused Capitán Salazar’s cabin door to jam shut for half a day. Poor Lieutenant Lesaro went to great pains to do everything possible to make sure the door was well-oiled forever afterwards, to make sure it didn’t happen again. Officer Magda stopped by, in between his duties, to see what was happening. “Are you sure you want to put that much oil on the hinges?” Officer Magda asked the Lieutenant. “Sí sí sí!” Capitán Salazar interrupted in a growl. “Put all the oil on!”

6, 8, 18? please and thank you!
Thank you so much for the asks!
6. Ship or platonic relationship that you got into because of the fans?
Hmm. I think for this, it's definitely Norrington and Elizabeth.
Tumblr media
When I watched the movies I liked him very much, but I didn't see how he could be with Elizabeth until I read some very very excellent fanfics that gave Norrington a second chance.
8. Best thing about canon?
I'm an odd fan. I hate and love Dead Men Tell No Tales. Hate the ending, dislike the retconning of key PotC points, what does Disney have against Spaniards anyway why are they always the bad guys (??).... But I loooovvveee Capitán Salazar. I looovveee La María Silenciosa. I love Lieutenant Lesaro, and I love all the Spaniards.
I mean a lot of people diss the Fifth movie, and I used to see countless posts saying *ew the fifth movie doesn't exist and I'm so edgy and original for pretending only the trilogy is canon* - yeah I know, I'm still salty about boring PotC takes - but I'll never really hate DMTNT because the Fifth movie is *the* movie that got me writing fanfic. And the best thing about PotC 5 canon, the absolute best thing, THE best thing:
Tumblr media
These. Boots.
The long gratuitous shots of Capitán Salazar's boots. Just, perfecto.
18. Something you initially did not like but came around to?
Henry Turner.
Tumblr media
He just came across as a total boy to me when I first saw him, and I'm not a fan of the 'boyish charm' stereotype.
I also thought the romance with Carina was rushed and a little unbelievable, which didn't help his case either.
But as I started writing fanfic, I grew to appreciate his goodness. We need more truly good fictional characters, and Henry Turner is Good. Like, comforting good. A warming, reliable, honest sort of Good that I really like.
I still don't see how Carina and Henry could ever stay together. Opposites may attract, but I think in their case, opposites would be more likely to repel. She's prissy, she's structured, she's writing mathematical equations and she's not in touch with her emotions. He's reading stolen pirate maps and taking unplanned flagrant risks, he's raw and vulnerable and drowning himself just to see his dad (🥺) and then not twenty minutes into the movie he's wetting his dry mouth in front of Capitán Salazar but doing an admirable job of not losing his fucking mind while face to face with Cursed Living Dead Spaniards who killed the entire crew of the Monarch. (Contrast this with Carina who ran away screaming).
So yeah. I love Henry.

A look at Chapter 41
“Does he speak to Death?”
“¿Qué?” Lesaro’s head rose, breaking his mind free from a blurred stare starting to develop under his hand along the polished wood grain of María Silenciosa’s gunwale. Even the night’s half-moon reflected her shine there, and slowly he pulled away.
“Does he speak to Death?” The boy repeated, standing rather relaxed but itching at the collar by his ear.
Lesaro followed the inquisitive look of the ship’s page at his side. Their view rested on one man who stood unwavering in the shadow’s edge of the lantern light on the quarterdeck.
Ah. Does Capitán Salazar speak to Death? Often, he answered himself.
The canvas above snapped alive and urged the ship to lean starboard, sending a harsh line of orders from the helm to correct their course. In that moment it appeared the stars moved with grace and speed and Guillermo Lesaro allowed a small smile to form his lips.
“I guess the question is,” the page crossed his arms respectively having prided himself on engaging the Lieutenant in such a profound discourse. “Does Capitán Salazar fear Death? Does he fear his Judgment?”
Or believe anymore in either, Lesaro’s thoughts continued. “Munoz,” turning back to look out over the dark sea, “Capitán Salazar fears nothing.”
“Of course you would say that,” he laughed. “I imagine Saint Peter himself will be asking pardon when they meet. And Hell is too full of pirates to accept him!”
Lesaro’s narrow glare struck down from a darkened eye and the boy immediately grew pale.
“I…my apologies Lieutenant. I meant no disrespect,” dipping low his head.
“No.” Lesaro spoke forgivingly. How many others on this ship might have sons the same age as this boy? He wanted to reach out and tousle the boy’s hair as if it were his own child. He held back.
“No I suppose you did not. But back to your post.”
With a tip to his hat the page disappeared into the darkness and Lesaro returned to previous thoughts: Of lying in a sun-soaked golden field, then sharply to an unholy smoke filled battle, until finally resting on memories of a rocky shoreline and the prickled feeling of a starfish slowly walking across his open palm, and the beguiling eyes of the woman who first placed it in his hand.

"I have a present for your Captain as well, where is he?"
"He is in his cabin, cara gris," Lesaro explains, "a place you should not be."

Hey yo if Salazar has Lesaro do stuff like hold his spyglass for him, do you think he puts his hair up in that little bun for him too? Cause that would be cute.

if they could meet/talk to one person, dead or alive, who would it be?  what would they say to them?
This is a tough one lol. I see two potential options.
He'd probably ask his father why. Why turn to piracy? Why abandon his wife and child? He had everything Lesaro wants, yet gave it up without a second thought.
Alternatively, he'd tell his former fiancé that he loves her and that he never intended for what happened at the Triangle. He'd even give up hunting pirates if it meant he could have more time with her, more time with the woman he loved.

Rewatching specific scenes from Dead Men Tell no Tales and I forgot just how absolutely done with Armando's temper Lesaro looks like when he says "there's no mercy" and nods towards the pirates.
As soon as he turns around and walks away, humming, Lesaro looks like an 18th century version of the exhausted Ben Affleck meme.
My headcanon is that he tried to tell Armando so many times that this endless revenge, this obsessive pursuit would be their doom and this scene happened so many times throughout the years that he can barely contain himself at times like these.

The other night, I had a dream about Lieutenant Lesaro. I was standing on a slope. In front of me was a field of wheat, unripened and still very pale green. To my right was an old farm, the kind of farm that has been lived in since the 1700s, the cracks in the walls visibly plastered over even from a distance. Gui was standing next to me, in black jeans and a black leather jacket.
The sun was setting.
He turned towards me, his hands reached for mine and held them between his. I remember in the dream actually feeling the warmth of his hands. The sun cast his skin gold, his eyes were illuminated warm and clear, like syrup. He didn't say anything but I had the strongest sense he was telling me he would wait. For as long as it took.

Chapter 10 of Tilting at Windmills is up!
I got some meaningful feedback expressing concern about our dear Lieutenant Lesaro which had quite an impact on me. I love the interpretation of him as a cinnamon roll as much as the next person, but he’s also very much a professional soldier who has been party to the deaths of thousands throughout his lifetime and bound by a vicious curse. So, I want to work harder going forward to capture the internal dissonance between those two facets of his character.
But aside from that...going into this chapter, I wanted to try my hand at some writing inspired by the classic romances and tales of chivalry, and I think that paired really well with Lesaro, the white knight of the Silent Mary.
Hope you all enjoy! :)

The Long Incoherent Thank-You Post For @CaptainSigge
This is shamefully overdue, but - I HAVE to post a little thank you for the lovely @captainsigge online, because she sent me the BEST parcel ever. A while ago I was clearing out my dress-up wardrobe, and she very kindly accepted a couple of things from me as I made room for more.
Tumblr media
She then proceeded to BLOW my little mind with the amazing array of goodies she sent!
PLUSHY LESARO, my friends. She sent me the legendary PLUSHY Lieutenant Lesaro that she spent so much time and effort on! The UNIFORM detail! the stunningly embroidered eye! the gorgeous fluffy hair!!
Tumblr media
(my face on receiving this magical parcel of wonder)
And NOT only that, guys - she sent me not 1, but 2 beautiful, carefully rendered resin-cast replicas! One of them is a gorgeous, meticulously painted screen-accurate one - and it even has this lovely little hidden painting of a starry constellation, hidden in the lid.
The other one is... amazing. So much so I think my sister will probably steal it for her Redd the Pirate cosplay! It's this lovely shimmering clear resin filled with soft pink flowers and golden glitter, and its the the most beautiful thing you could ever desire to keep your magical compass in, EVER.
And a beautifully sewn 18th century pocket you can see above (NICER THAN MINE, DUDE! I'm going to have to up my sewing standards!) AND a lovely matching resin cast jewellery set (probably ALSO going to be stolen by my sister)
AND so many Finnish goodies (not pictured, because they had mostly er, evaporated by this time. we are not known for our self-restraint when it comes to delicious snacks in my house)
So because I am a nerd who happened to have a lot of vaguely 18th century doll furniture lying around, you get some daft pictures of Plushy Lesaro getting some much needed R&R:
Tumblr media
After the long journey across the seas, what better way for el Teniente to relax than with some tea and cake?
Tumblr media
Once rested, Lesaro happily re-unites with his uncursed Capitan once more - although Salazar appears to have shrunk in the wash, somewhat...
Tumblr media
And he then finishes the day by getting to sleep in a glorious 18th century four poster bed courtesy of American Girl's Felicity...
Thank you SO much, @captainsigge! I am so lucky to count you as a friend!
