Soft sandwiches, street fights and surrealism: Marlene Marder’s memoir of Swiss punks Kleenex/Liliput | Music | The Guardian

On 29 March 1978, Marlene Marder leapt into her new existence. She was watching punk band Kleenex’s first show, at Zurich’s Club Hey, when their guitarist and only male member declined to return for the encore. For him, the late Marder wrote in her diary, “Kleenex was a bit of weekend fun”. But for Marder, Kleenex offered a more profound form of liberation. She told bassist Klaudia Schifferle and drummer Lislot Ha that she knew the chords and climbed on stage.

I know I've mentioned this many times, but I rely on regular Monorail Music (Glasgow, Scotland) missives to learn about music. That's how I learned about Glasgow's own Water Machine in June 2023, and it's also how I learned about Water Machine's upcoming album on FatCat Records.

"Tiffany" is the only song currently available and it is an amazing nod to one of Scotland's finest - Orange Juice. The Bandcamp write-up for "God Park" is littered with great reference points:  LiLiPUT, The Pastels, The Vaselines, Soup Dragons..."This group of young Glaswegians recognise that they owe something to the city’s rich musical history...Glasgow has a distinctive sound and energy that [they] definitely feel a part of and inspired by”. The Bandcamp page goes on to name some non-Glaswegian influences: The Ronettes, The Ramones, Sonic Youth, Bush Tetras, The Marine Girls and The Pogues.

The entire album is slated for release at the end of June 2025.
