Now that I finally saw it on VOD, I heard there is a possibility for it to re-run in cinemas in Turkey soon and I will certainly go see it again. This film made me sick, I hated every scene while it rolled but at the same time I fell in love with it. So well acted, extremely pretty to...

From Asheville, NC
Judges' Remarks: THIS WAS AMAZING! It was a brilliant idea to tell the story of the book by rewriting the lyrics of Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off." But this was more than a great idea—it was fantastic execution, too! The lyrics succinctly and entertainingly summed up the plot (culminating in the "hey hey hey" spoken word part, which handled the climax and denouement really smoothly), and the singing performances were clear, strong, and full of spirit. There were no half-measures in this movie! (It was also a smart idea to subtitle all the lyrics.) The inventive cinematography and editing made this shine—I liked the clever way the movie made it look like the kids were "climbing God's thumb,” and the choreographed dancing of many orange-shirted prisoners was impressive . . . culminating with the shovels rhythmically banging on the ground at the end of the song’s bridge! I appreciated the attention to detail: Mr. Sir eating the sunflower seeds, the prison-looking tent looming in the background, and the visual storytelling (boiling a boot on the stovetop, Stanley teaching Zero how to read, Madame Zeroni in a great costume while Stanley's grandfather holds a comical stuffed pig . . . this movie has it all! This was an incredible movie, and it's exactly in the spirit of the 90-Second Newbery. Bravo!

💡 and 🦺 for the ask game!! - @magic-is-something-we-create
@magic-is-something-we-create ty for the ask!!
💡 What inspired your WIP? Does it have the same “vibes” as it originally did? If not, how do you think of it now, compared to before?
oh god... early days petrichor was, and i am entirely serious, initially inspired by ya sci-fi dystopia stuff. because i started the very first versions of it in fifth and sixth grade. and also i vaguely recall something about there being like. magic gems and spells? i only watched steven universe like. a few moths ago. so i think the whole gems thing was because i had friends who were into it at the time so i got vaguely inspired by it by proxy. the spells came from harry potter (:////////). now, both those aspects of the worldbuilding are Entirely Gone :)
as you might imagine the vibes are uh. very, very different. we have gone from """""gritty""""" ya sci-fi dystopia (but with magic??) to "i have an obsession with film noir can you tell" + character focus. also it's historical fantasy now so there's that
🦺 What is a plot hole that popped up in your WIP, and how did you fix it? (Alternatively, what is something you added to your story to make it more believable/coherent?)
oh boy. as of The Current Draft Of Petrichor I'm Attempting... there are no plot holes because i'm. fifteen pages in and i don't outline :)
as far as coherency, i'm constantly tinkering with the worldbuilding and lore of petrichor's world to make things make sense. you may remember a month or so ago my timeline issues with regards to rory darling, his song about lupa, and america's borders closing--but i think the most recent major change to make the worldbuilding make more sense (and also less Very Potentially A Thing I Should Not Write) was the change in how, exactly wwii (as we know it) didn't happen--initially, the nazis were still A Thing, but had allied with the commars. now, obviously the nazi party still exists in petrichor, and hitler was likely elected due to the Everything in our history, but the commars were already in a larger sort of control, having gotten a foothold in the chaos following wwi, making the german government one of their puppet governments (i am still working on the details of this but. that's the gist!)
the other Coherency Thing of petrichor i'm currently hashing out is lupa/lycaon/leslie moran/maylum--i.e. who knows him as what alias, why, how that affects things, how his magic affects things, etc., what aspects of his leslie moran persona are attributed to lycaon, and all that jazz

hello !! do you have any recommendations for 20s/30s movies?? I've been watching a lot of 40s and 50s ones lately but I'm not sure where to start with earlier stuff ❤
sure! i’m actually gonna go back even farther to the 1910s because if you’re going back that far you might as well go all the way back :) (also there was a movie i want to recommend but it’s from 1916 lol)
this is going to be long - i’ve highlighted the films i think you should start with, though i’d recommend any of these. i also just want to say that because this is my list and it’s my taste, when editing this down (yes, it was longer) i took out as many of the most “popular” films as i could because i want some underseen gems to get more love! that’s all - happy watching! 💛

HER CARDBOARD LOVER
1926
Tumblr media
Her Cardboard Lover is a three-act play by Valerie Wyngate and P.G. Wodehouse, adapted from the French play Dans sa candeur naïve by Jacques Deval. It was originally produced by Charles Frohman Inc. and A.H. Woods. It was staged by Gilbert Miller.
The Story: To make her handsome and popular lover Tony jealous, Simone enlists Andre to pretend to be her new love interest. She doesn’t count on the complications brought on by her doting cardboard lover.
The French play opened in Paris on January 13, 1926. The English translation  premiered on Long Island NY on September 23, 1926, then on to Stamford CT on the 24th and 25th.
Tumblr media
It arrived at at Nixon’s Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City on September 27, 1926 starring Laurette Taylor as Simone and Leslie Howard as Andre. Plans were for an October 7th arrival on the Great White Way. But instead, October 4th found the troupe in Washington DC. Then a full week in Baltimore MD.
Tumblr media
A funny thing happened on the way to the Rialto.
Tumblr media
The show was shut down after Baltimore, before Broadway, giving the opportunity to makes some changes to the script.
Tumblr media
Brady wanted to recast Taylor to suit the revised script, but the star had a ‘run of play’ contract and there was an impasse about her withdrawal.
Tumblr media
The matter was then referred to Equity and a lawsuit was initiated.
Tumblr media
With Taylor out, who would play Simone?
Tumblr media
Brady considered Katherine Cornell. Cornell considered it, but eventually passed on the project.
Tumblr media
Brady finally settled on Jeanne Eagels, who gave up her role in a little play named Chicago to take the role.
Tumblr media
In advance of its Broadway premiere, the new script tried out in Newark NJ where a critic noticed that the relationship between the characters had changed since Atlantic City.
Tumblr media
The leading character was previously described as a mistress, but now called a divorcee.
Tumblr media
The play finally opened on Broadway at the Empire Theatre (1430 Broadway) on March 21, 1927 where it ran for 152 performances.
Tumblr media
A 1928 London tour of the play starred Tallulah Bankhead, with Leslie Howard reprising the role, running for 173 performances. Five minutes of the play was released in UK cinemas as a silent short. After the West End, she toured the play in the UK for much of 1929.
Tumblr media
In 1941, the play enjoyed a US tour of regional theatres starring Bankhead reprising her role. One of the theatres was located in Maplewood NJ. It also played Ogunquit ME, White Plains NY, and other summer stock venues.
Tumblr media
As soon as the play closed in New York City, Marion Davies bought the screen rights for herself. The silent film adaptation played in Atlantic City at the Capitol Theatre on Atlantic Avenue in September 1928. The title had been slightly changed to THE Cardboard Lover.
Tumblr media
A second film version (totally rewritten) opened in Atlantic City at the Strand Theatre on Valentine’s Day 1932. The title was much more different, choosing instead The Passionate Plumber. It starred Polly Moran and Jimmy Durante. The film was also released in French, perhaps as a tribute to the play’s Parisian origins.
Tumblr media
The final film version returned to its original title: Her Cardboard Lover. It opened at the Apollo Theatre in June 1942, the same theatre that had hosted the play starring Laurette Taylor in 1926. Considered a bomb, it was the final film of Norma Shearer.

hello i bring you lupa content because i have brainrot for one of his aliases-leslie moran, who is one of the funniest and most on-brand characters i have ever created. he is initially a broadway star. except he's in one (1) show as the star and then he Vanishes and becomes a cryptid and then he shows up in england as lycaon's second in command but nobody's sure if it's the same leslie moran. it doesn't help that nobody was ever sure if moran was british or just has a strong transatlantic accent
I assume you meant allies rather than aliases? Honestly though, Lupa has the COOLEST of allies. I'm still over here pining after Mx. X. Help.
Oh, oh Leslie. Oh dear. WHY? Why give up a broadway career for crime??? And to just simply disappear to reappear elsewhere with everyone questioning if it's actually him! WHAT A MYSTERY. Makes for an intriguing one, though~ :P
Because of her immortality, Dione has had to fake her own death upon multiple occasions. For those unaware of just how she ages, many think her more modern appearances are actually the descendants of the original green-eyed witch--that's if they met her when they were very young, or perhaps their own grandparents met her or something. Dione's been around!
It's just especially funny to me because Dione thinks the concept of her having children is frankly disgusting. XD So she has to very awkwardly nod (very unconvincingly) when anyone asks.

Let’s have a little look at a small selection of some of the Conan Doyle Estate’s bullshit shall we, with even more reaction images.
“The Conan Doyle Estate is the only authentic network of experts who provide specialist knowledge of Arthur Conan Doyle’s life, adventures and his many fictional characters.”
Tumblr media
Yeah about as authentic as a nine pound note. Their ‘experts’ are lawyers and PR people, their website is obsessed with the “brand” and “licensing” and “trademarks and copyright” ahead of anything else and most of their ‘facts’ are completely wrong and many are clearly taken directly from Sherlock not from the canon. Also remember how Leslie S Klinger had to challenge them in court over their bullshit? That’s what actual Holmes and Conan Doyle experts think of them.
“The Conan Doyle Estate is formed from the family of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.”
“Most of the family are relations of Sir Arthur, by marriage or blood.”
Tumblr media
Yet very strangely they only provide any information about very distant connections between 3 of those “family” and one of those is a step great grandson not even a blood relation. That is their idea of “most” apparently, 3 out of 8 people. None of Arthur Conan Doyle’s children had children; he has no direct descendents and even if they were more closely linked to him through blood, that still wouldn’t make them “experts” as they seem to like to imply they are. Being related to someone even through blood does not make you an expert or make your motives in trying to claim ownership of that person’s works any less mercenary. Plus I’m sure there are thousands of people in the world who can also claim to have an equally tenuous connection to Arthur Conan Doyle, they’re not special in any way.
“The Conan Doyle Estate Ltd owns the last remaining protected story and character copyrights in the USA”
Tumblr media
Funny how they ignore that all of the stories are out of copyright in the UK though and have been for 20 years, and the “last remaining protected story in the USA” is just one of 56 stories.
“Holmes and Watson initially admire Moran for his many stories of iron nerve … until they become the game he is hunting at Moriarty’s behest.”
Tumblr media
That... never happened in the canon. Moran doesn’t hunt Watson. He doesn’t hunt Holmes “at Moriarty’s behest” like that and Moran’s “stories of iron nerve” are only brought up after he’s caught. All of this is just factually wrong.
Also why the fuck would you give ‘Sebastian’ from Without A Clue - a character who has so little character development he isn’t even given a surname in the film and is shown as little more than a rather dim thug - as an example of a portrayal of Moran but totally leave out someone like Patrick Allen?
Moriarty is “Sherlock’s number one nemesis and obsessive fan.”
Tumblr media
Yeah, that obsessive fan who appeared 1 (one) time in the canon in Holmes’s rooms totally pissed off at Holmes for foiling his other schemes, such a fan, so much obsession there.
Also reducing Moriarty to an “obsessive fan” of Holmes anyway. What the fuck. Don’t fucking insult my boy like that.
“Moriarty appears in only two tales directly, "The Final Problem" and "The Valley of Fear" but he is alluded to in five others.
Tumblr media
No he doesn’t and no he isn’t. He doesn’t actually even appear directly in any story. He’s directly relevant to the plot and referred to by other characters besides Watson in The Final Problem, The Empty House and The Valley of Fear; all of his scenes are however second hand accounts described by other characters to Watson, not direct appearances which Watson witnessed and is able to directly recount except for one or two fleeting glimpses of someone who may have been Moriarty or may have been someone else entirely. And that is 3 stories, not 2.
He is then also mentioned very briefly in a context which has nothing to do with the plot and are literally just fleeting mentions in 4 other stories (The Norwood Builder, The Missing Three-Quarter, The Illustrious Client and His Last Bow). Anything about him in any other story or criminal scheme within them is pure speculation/fanon, not canon, or a reference to some non-canonical source. Those 4 are literally just a few words long mentions of him, not him being “alluded” to in any meaningful way as they’re trying to imply he is. There is nothing in the canon about him being involved in any other crimes or plots; he’s given no further character development in those other stories. And that is 4 not 5.
And here’s one of their most glaring and yet easily checked up on errors I found before my soul entirely departed my body and I had to stop looking at their garbage:
“Mycroft is one of three children. He is the older brother to both Sherlock and Eurus.”
Tumblr media
Eurus is an original character from Sherlock and has absolutely nothing to do with the canon and in fact there isn’t any evidence of them having a younger sister or even any other sibling at all. (What are they gonna do next, try to sue the BBC for stealing Eurus from them?) The sheer ignorance of this supposed “family” of “experts” is just unbelievable.
