YELLOWJACKETS DETAIL: Laura Lee and how her faith and purity led her to her death
Laura Lee means "symbol of victory", she WANTED to save them all, even though you see how they're treating her in the first episode. They think her faith is annoying, but despite that she's too sweet and loyal to her religion, she still cares about them and forgives them.
The only person who truly saw, loved and believed in her in the wilderness seemed to be lottie.
On the helicopter she puts Leonard (her Teddy bear) next to her, ofc Leonard means a lot to Laura Lee, but her innocence ends up being her death because Leonard sets on fire.
If the rest of the YJs knew this, they would've thought about her differently. They only see it burst into flames which could also lead to the theory off it being no "wilderness", but just natural causes and the trauma of the plane and everything else causing them to believe in "it"

Sophie's Hon 💋
If you want to know more about the guy Sophie Turner is smooching lately, you know, that very tall, very very rich, British aristocrat with a fantasy novel name, this post is for you . . . . lol
His full name is The Hon Peregrine John Dickinson Pearson, but he goes by “Perry.” And the photo above is his company profile picture.
Born on October 27th, 1994, he's 29 years old and the future 5th Viscount Cowdray.
Perry is from Midhurst, West Sussex, and now lives in a £5million house in Chelsea, West London.
The Hon before his name means The Honourable, a title used for all sons and daughters of viscounts and barons. Hon also works for 'honey' and 'sweetheart', hence this post's title.
Peregrine may come from Henry Winston Peregrine Spencer-Churchill, nephew of former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Sir Winston (Leonard Spencer) Churchill.
Yes, Churchill, you read it right! Perry's grandfather Weetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, was the son of Agnes Beryl Spencer-Churchill, who was the granddaughter of George Spencer-Churchill, 6th Duke of Marlborough.
So Perry is distant related to Winston Churchill and Diana Spencer, The Lady D . . . . In fact, he has already introduced Sophie to some of the current Spencer-Churchills (they are cousins with Perry, I guess 🤷♀️).
Now, I have no idea why his parents opted to name him Peregrine over Weetman, since each of the four former Viscounts Cowdray were all named Weetman; but his peculiar fantasy novel/bird-like name inmmediately made me think of House Arryn and Harry Hardyng. More on this later.
But since he's not named Weetman, he fixed that by naming his own property investment and development company 'Weetman'.
John is for both grandfathers: Weetman John Churchill Pearson, 3rd Viscount Cowdray, and John Howard Cordle.
Dickinson is for his great-great-grandfather: Weetman Dickinson Pearson, 1st Viscount Cowdray.
~~~
Family
The seat of the Pearson Family is Cowdray Estate, Cowdray Park, Midhurst, West Sussex. The picture of the family above was taken at Buck Hall, the atrium of Cowdray House.
The name Cowdray comes from Coudreye, the Norman word for the nearby hazel woods.
Perry is the son and heir of Michael Orlando Weetman Pearson, 4th Viscount Cowdray, and Marina Rose Cordle.
His dad produced the documentary "Sympathy for the Devil," directed and written by Jean-Luc Godard, documenting the creative evolution of the song "Sympathy for the Devil" as the Rolling Stones developed it during recording sessions at Olympic Studios in London.
His mom is an artist, sculptress, interior designer and mindfulness coach, she's keenly interested in spiritual matters, she practises Transcendental Meditation (a form of silent meditation) and Qigong.
His parents separated in August 2023, after 36 years of marriage.
Perry has three older sisters and a younger brother:
Eliza Anne Venetia Pearson (born 31 May 1988). She married her first husband at 21. Later he left her for the Kate Winslet . . . . She remarried, had children and lives in Ibiza now.
Emily Jane Marina Pearson (born 13 December 1989). Tatler Magazine included her as one of the 10 perfect potential brides for Prince Harry . . . . She she studied Plant-based Nutrition and is one of the founders of the vegan restaurant "Farmacy" in Notting Hill.
Catrina Sophie Lavinia Pearson (born 13 March 1991). She goes by "Catty." She's a musician and a film-school graduate.
Montague Orlando William Pearson (born 17 May 1997). He goes by "Monty". Wee brother is 6'4. He's a helicopter pilot, enjoys flying drones and studied film production and graphic design. He was named after the former owners of Cowdray Estate, the Viscounts of Montague.
Perry also has an older half brother:
Sebastian William Orlando Pearson (born 1970).
As you can see, Perry is privileged to be the heir above his older half brother Sebastian, since he was born out of wedlock, and above his older sisters: Eliza, Emily and Catrina, since they were born women . . . . Where have I heard this before???
Sometimes I'm glad I'm an only child . . . .
As any other younger brother of three older sisters, he was annoying. According to Tatler Magazine, Perry liked to wind up his sisters (then vegan) by scoffing meat.
Perry is also an uncle, his sisters Eliza and Emily are mothers of cute babies, but sadly I can't show you pictures. He looks cute holding a baby tho.
Talking about cute babies, that little curly blonde boy sat in a chair next to his standing father in one of the portraits in the picture above, is Perry. His portrait was painted by Chinese artist Chen Yanning, who also painted Queen Elizabeth II's portrait:
Here a few more childhood pics:
That picture of of him as a baby peeing on a plant, is his Instagram profile picture . . . .
~~~
Education
Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services at the University of West London, UK.
Not Oxford or Cambridge? Shocking!
UX Desing at General Assembly in New York, NY, US.
Dear Perry, you can improve my user experience by making your instagram account public. That would do!
~~~
Occupation
In January 2015, it was reported by Tatler Magazine that he was working for Aylesford International Estate Agents in London.
He also worked as an assistant site manager for Cordles, a London based contractor company founded by his maternal uncle Rupert Cordle.
He started working at Cowdray Estate in West Sussex, his family estate and heirdom, since 2016 to this day.
He's also the founder, partner and director of Weetman Developments, his own property investment and development company in London, since 2019 to this day.
Perry is also a Le Chameau – the wellington boot brand – ambassador.
As you can see, Perry is basically a nepo baby lol
But that doesn't mean he doesn't work, Cowdray Estate is huge (16,500 acre), and offers a vast variety of activities like golf, clay-pigeon shooting, fly fishing on the river Rother, walking, cycling, riding, polo, truffle hunting, hospitality at the farm shop & café, holiday cottages, tree houses, wedding venues, private stays and events at Cowdray House, filming locations (the Cowdray Ruins were used during the filming of Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan’s film, "Mary Queen of Scots"), among others, and Perry is/will be in charge of all of that.
According to his mom, back in 2019 he was pioneering aquaponic farming on a commercial scale [The Telegraph - June, 2019].
In an interview for The Gentleman's Journal, Perry said that he's working to pass the estate on to his heir in better conditions: “But the dream is to pass it on to my son or daughter in better nick than it’s in now. That’s the mentality when it comes to estates,” “You’re so grateful that you’ve been given this opportunity, you want others to have the same opportunity that you had.”
I don't know if Perry will try to change the primogeniture rules, but it was really nice to read that he thinks his heir could be a son or a daughter.
Perry's family was always wealthy (construction and petroleum in the past, publishing nowadays); but not always aristocrats.
His great-great-grandfather, Weetman Dickinson Pearson, was made a Baronet of Paddockhurst in 1894, then he purchased Cowdray Estate in 1909. Later he was made Baron Cowdray first, in 1910, and then the 1st Viscount Cowdray in 1917.
Viscount, is a European title of nobility, ranking immediately below a count, or earl. It is one of the five ranks of British nobility and peerage, which, in descending order, are duke, marquess, earl, viscount, and baron.
So, when Perry becomes the 5th Viscount Cowdray, he won't be on top of the british nobility; but he will be richer. At present, Perry's family is thought to be worth £224million, and one day, he will inherit all of that.
~~~
Hobbies
Riding (Not Polo)
His family estate includes Cowdray Park Polo Club, dubbed The Home of British Polo, but Perry doesn't play Polo.
His parents never pushed him to, perhaps fearing that he could get hurt by falling from a horse. "Michael (Perry's father) never sought polo glory after a fall from a horse at the age of 13" [standard.co.uk - 2010].
In 2018 he said: “Cowdray is to polo what Goodwood is to racing and Glyndebourne to opera.” “I’m getting lessons.” “I grew up riding and over the next few years it’s something I can see myself doing a lot more” [The Telegraph - August, 2018].
Later, in an interview for The Gentleman's Journal, he joked by saying that "he’s not particularly good at it".
So far, I only saw him presenting Polo trophies and congratulating the champions, so I guess the lessons didn't work . . . . lol
Maybe is better that way, if he doesn't play polo he wont smell of horses. Sophie is asthmatic and allergic to horses.
Golf
He plays golf for some charity and corporate events. No idea if he's good at it.
Clay-pigeon shooting
Not sure if he really shoots at flying clay targets or he only modeled to promote the shooting school at his family estate.
Huntings
He likes to attend posh huntings wearing tweed, baker boy caps and suspenders.
He already took Sophie to one of those last December, but she didn't wear tweed, she defied the rules by wearing a Zara black jacket and a pair of acid washed jeans. . . . She would look great wearing tweed, tho . . . .
(There have been hunters in my family, so I can't judge much)
Here some pics:
Skiing
He seems very skilled at it.
Meribel in France seems to be his family favorite destination to enjoy the snow.
He already took Sophie to ski & “après ski” there, and they were having the time of their lives!
Going to the beach
Yeah!
Ibiza is a favorite destination for his family, his dad used to live there, and now his eldest sister established there with her own family.
Can't wait to see Sophie enjoying the sun in Ibiza next . . . .
Enjoy some pics:
Partying
Fuck yeah!
"Like all the Cowdrays, he loves a party" [Tatler Magazine, January 2015].
"(...) the Hon Peregrine Pearson (the Cowdray heir), known for throwing ‘wild afterparties’ at his house in Chelsea, which he shares with Ella (Richards)’s boyfriend, Sascha von Bismarck" [Tatler Magazine, March 2023].
Here abundant evidence:
Pottery
Perry enjoyed spending time in his mom's pottery studio in the garden: “We were brought up being quite creative – spending time in her studio was very bonding” [The Telegraph - August, 2018].
I would love to see one of those creative pieces made by Perry 👀
Meditation
Like his mom, Perry practises meditation as well. [The Telegraph - June, 2019].
From pictures, it seems he usually wears a silver Meditator pendant. The Meditator is a seated figure, with a pointed head, a heart and a hole in its middle. His mom designed it herself, as a reminder to live in the present moment, rather than fretting about the past or future.
~~~
Previous relationships
His only known/famous relationship was with Princess Maria Olympia of Greece and Denmark.
He dated Olympia for three years, since 2020 to 2023.
She seemed really into Perry during the relationship:
But shortly after their break up was official, she was reported being in a relationship with an older, married with children man . . . .
His wife kicked him out of the house after the news. Good for her! [Read more about it here]
~~~
So far, this is all I learnt about Sophie's Hon Perry Pearson. I love that he's so tall and the way he can hug her being so tall, I bet Sophie loves it too.
But I kinda hate that the press only uses his most unflattering pictures, when is easy to find public pictures where he actually looks good.
Also, my friend told me that he reminds her a bit of Paul Mescal, and now I can't unsee it . . . .
What more can I say about him after my research? Oh, maybe that he has met the Dalai Lama and sat next to Kim Kardashian and Kimora Lee Simmons at Paris Hilton's wedding lol
He also loves to wear sunglasses, even indoors . . . .
Anyways, now to the point of this post!
~~~
Romance with Sophie Turner
Perry is a Scorpio and Sophie is a Pisces, like Scorpio Ryan Gosling and Pisces Eva Mendes . . . .
I have no idea how they met, where they met, or when they met, but we have evidence that they spent the last part of October 2023 together.
2023 was a rough year for both of them, with her divorce and custody battle, and with his own break up with his ex, and the separation of his parents after 36 years of marriage.
The first time we saw him next to Sophie, we have no idea who he was. It was during the Rugby World Cup final on October 28th 2023, just before Sophie unveiled the trophy:
Perry was there with Sophie, but we had no idea they were together until October 31th 2023, when a couple of pictures of them sharing a kiss outside Paris’s Gare du Nord train station were made public and got viral:
The pictures were taken on the same day as the Rugby World Cup final. It was reported that they arrived together in Paris from London via the Eurostar, and said goodbye with a kiss before meeting again later at the Stade de France.
When their Paris kiss pictures were all over the press, someone claimed that their friend had seen them together the week before:
So, if the Rugby World Cup final was on October 28th 2023 and Perry's 29th birthday was the day before, I bet the lovebirds spent his birthday together in London.
I wonder what Sophie got Perry for his birthday??? An appointment with a fashion stylist, I hope!
(Perry, honey, burn those double breasted suits in your closet, please! They don't fit your large body 🙏 King Felipe II of Spain, has a similar body and his tailoring is👌)
I also believe they spent the last days of October together in Paris, since they were seen all cozy during a romantic dinner at some fancy Parisian restaurant:
After that Sophie was seen back in New York on November 3th 2023. We don't know if Perry travelled with her to New York, but some anon claims he saw them holding hands in West Village:
Back in London, they were seen making out in a famous spot on November 2023 . . . .
. . . . And having dinner with friends on early December 2023:
Later, we have graphic evidence of them spending time together from the 7th to the 10th of December 2023, at least.
December 7th 2023:
They went to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland at night, where they walked around, hugged and kissed:
December 8th 2023:
They had brunch in West London and walked around hand in hand, eventually stopping so Perry could gently caress Sophie's face and kiss her:
That day, this also happened . . . . 🤨
December 9th 2023:
They attended a posh hunting weekend at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, held by some of the current Spencer-Churchills: George Spencer-Churchill and his wife Camilla Thorp, Marquess and Marchioness of Blandford (they will be Duke and Duchess of Marlborough one day).
The event was full of Perry's aristocrat friends like Alexander Spencer-Churchill, Lady Jemima Herbert, the Earl of Pembroke’s daughter, and Eleanor Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington’s niece, among others.
So, Perry has basically already introduced Sophie to some relative and close friends:
Can someone please explain to me why is Perry wearing a pink ribbon around his neck in the last picture? Is a mystery I need to resolve in this lifetime.
Here a few more pics:
After that, I suspect they spent the holidays together in London, or, at least, that they saw each other for a few hours during those days. I'm not saying she introduced him to her family and daughters, but it's obvious that they are dating and Christmas and the New Year are festivities you want to share with the people you care for.
I wonder what Perry got Sophie for Christmas? A handmade ceramic vase? A basket full of hydroponic vegetables that he grew himself?Diamonds?
And most recently, on January 17, 2024, they were seen walking around London at night all cozied up:
I want her UGGS!!!
Also, are those really mini liquor bottles at Perry's hand??? At first I thought they were Sophie's nail polish bottles 💅🏼
Someone spotted them skiing in Meribel, France. It was reported on January 28th, 2024, but it was probably before that date. Deuixmoi titled the stories as "let's see what your fave celebs have been up to the past week"
She's having the time of her life with Perry? GOOD FOR HER!
OK, today January 29th 2024, Sophie herself posted pics of them skiing in Meribel together with a couple of Perry's friends:
Lol at Perry not looking at the camera in the first pic 🤭
So, I suppose they are official now, right? Maybe it's time to post this post . . . .
~~~
Now, in the beginning of this post I said that after knowing Perry's fantasy novel/bird-like name, I immediately thought about ASOIAF's House Arryn and Harry Hardyng, you know, since House Arryn's sigil is a falcon, Harry Hardyng is dubbed the Young Falcon, and the peregrine is literally a species of falcon.
And since Harry Hardyng is the current Sansa's suitor in the ASOIAF incomplete series, I joked with my friends by saying that Sophie has entered his Harry Hardyng era . . . .
Perry also made me remember that passage in A Storm of Swords where Margaery's peregrine took a heron in full flight the day she and Sansa went hawking.
Peregrine is also the name of a ship that Arianne Martell boards in one of the few chapters of The Winds of Winter that GRRM released in advance.
Perry's name also reminds me of Pippin from The Lord of the Rings, since his full name is Peregrin Tuk, but this is a story for another day.
But if the Pearsons of Cowdray were a House from Westeros, they would be the Arryns enemies, since the Pearson's sigil is a gryphon:
And thanks to Sansa/Alayne we all know that the Winged Knight and the Griffin King were mortal enemies:
The Winged Knight was Ser Artys Arryn. Legend said that he had driven the First Men from the Vale and flown to the top of the Giant's Lance on a huge falcon to slay the Griffin King. —A Feast for Crows - Alayne II
You know, in some ancient mythologies, the creature known as gryphon is depicted as fire-belching: "winged, tailed, and taloned dragon which spat fire." 👀 👀 👀 👀 👀 Just saying . . . .
House Pearson motto is:
'Do it with thy might'
These words are carved on the stone fireplace in Buck Hall, the atrium at the heart of Cowdray House.
According to The Gentleman's Journal, Perry translates his family motto to simpler words: “Just do it — that might be a more modern approximation.”
But he's more into Adidas and North Star. Sorry Nike . . . . lol
Anyways, GRRM has the opportunity to do the funniest thing . . . .
~~~
And talking about GRRM, it's time to tell you that Perry's family are the founders and large share holders of Pearson plc, a British multinational publishing and education company headquartered in London.
Pearson plc owns Penguin Random House, you know, GRRM's publishers, the ones that publish the ASOIAF series . . . .
And I recently came to know that Penguin Random House is going to republish Joan Hannington’s autobiography “I Am What I Am” under the title ‘Joan.’ And, you know, Sophie's upcoming project is precisely a tv series called ‘Joan,’ with Sophie taking the role of Joan Hannington . . . .
Some will say that this is part of the j word agenda, lol
Again, GRRM has the opportunity to do the funniest thing . . . .
~~~
Finally, we need to answer an important question!
~~~
So . . . .
A match made in heaven? Or maybe we won't see his face again?
Only time will tell. I only hope that he makes Sophie super happy as long as they are together.
I will probably update this post with time or make a part 2, because Tumblr doesn't let me add more pictures 😢
Thanks for reading!
#sophie turner#PP#i am half boredom half procrastination#already updated with some lil bit I missed when i posted this last night . . . .#thehonseries
Gay wrongs tournament, round 1 of the minor bracket
Propaganda:
For Mick Rory and Leonard Snart:
The only supervillains on that show that understood the assignment. Thieves with a flare and loyal only to eachother. Eventually become anti heroes on legends of tomorrow but I liked them best as villains. The best part of both shows. Over the top and committed to the theme for the vibes. Puns and crime.
Fire and ice pairing!
For Sergey and Oleg: (propaganda from the previous tournament here)
They're so married!!! The domesticity oh my god they live together and they sleep in the same bed and they're worried if the other isn't here when they wake up and they take care of each other when they're sick. Sorry, the latest issue was a lot. Anyway, the crime-doing part. They're both officially criminals and they're wanted in quite a few countries for various reasons: in Russia they killed A Lot of people in various bloody and/or arson-y ways (most famously rich corrupted people, which only antagonists can do) and blew up some stuff (which also killed a lot of innocent people) and kidnapped other innocent people just to get revenge on one guy who was just doing his job (the cop who got Sergey in prison while Oleg was out of the country) (and technically Oleg breaking Sergey out of prison is also a crime, on top of all his solo mercenary stuff). In Italy they also killed people and also broke countless laws (you can even count building safety laws in here for fun), in Mexico (honeymoon!) they had a run-in with the local mafia and that also ended bloodily, in a few other countries they were mostly just evading the law but you can't really do that without breaking other laws. They stole at least one helicopter (after killing the soldiers in it). And that's all *before* the current series. In that one they're coercing someone into becoming a vigilante (an already wanted by the law vigilante), and they're trying not to do so much public things, because they like being presumed dead and not being on the run. But that doesn't stop them from bloodily killing anyone who threatens them or Lera (the med student under the new Plague Doctor costume) or their plan, or defending themselves (by killing people) when the consequences of their past actions come around (does it even count as legitimate defense when you kill almost all the henchmen of the guy who wants to kill you because years ago his parent was an unfortunate victim of your beef with someone totally unrelated? Not sure). And yes *technically* they're killing other criminals, but also they are much worse criminals themselves (as said on- page by a secondary character who was trying to kill them because of, well, all the past terrorism / murder).
They're widely considered to be the worst people in a town full of criminals. A lot of people want to kill them, because of all the murders they did earlier. In all their appearances they're either the most married couple of a series that also has real married couples, or extremely efficient killers who don't have a qualm disposing of everybody else's henchmen.
The Disappearance of Nicholas Leonard
May 28, 2024
Nicholas "Nick" Leonard was last seen on September 1, 1990, where he was dropped off to walk to a cabin near Wabush, Newfoundland, Canada for the Labour Day weekend.
No one has ever seen Nick since.
Nick's father in law owned a cabin near Wabush, where Nick would often go. The cabin was accessible by kayak, however, Nick usually liked to walk the 6 km from the outskirts of town.
A few days before Nick disappeared, he got news that his sister had died from cancer at home in Conception Harbour, Newfoundland.
On September 1, 1990, Nick received a ride to Elephant Head Road at 9 am. He had his backpack with him, and began to walk to the cabin on Loon Lake, with his family believing he would be back on Monday.
When Monday came and Nick hadn't returned, his family contacted the police. Nick was then reported missing. After this, it was found that the cabin had been left in a weird way.
There were two Coleman lanterns that were destroyed by what appeared to be a shovel, located by the front door. A drawer with knives was found on the floor. The kayak was always tied up but the ropes had been cut. There was a butcher knife from the kitchen drawer stuck in the ground near where the ropes were cut.
There was an envelope with more than $100 in cash in one of the kitchen cupboards. Nick's wallet was nowhere to be found, however.
On September 2, 1990, a helicopter search found the kayak paddle floating in the middle of Lower Loon Lake, with the kayak found later in water that was only 12 inches deep. The pilot also found Nick's backpack.
A witness came forward who had seen Nick on September 1, kayaking around 3pm. The witness saw Nick go to shore and he spent about 30 minutes with two other men. (It is unclear whether this witness was one of these men but it appears so.)
Supposedly, Nick told the two men he was heading home, but they reported his eyes looked glassy-like and distant and they told him he should stay the night. Nick told them he could not stay because had a babysitter and needed to get back in time.
Nick's family thought this was strange as there was no babysitter, and Nick's children were with their mother. Nick had also only been at the cabin for about 6 hours, planning to stay until Monday, but told these two men he was leaving?
It was reported that Nick drank two beers and went down Lower Loon in the kayak. The men said they watched Nick but lost sight of him near where his kayak was found overturned the following day.
The search concentrated on the area where the kayak was found. The water was an average of 25-30 feet deep, with the deepest point estimated at 62 feet. The search lasted for 2 and a half days.
No trace of Nick's body or other belongings of his were ever found. The lake was dragged but to no avail. Nick was considered a strong swimmer. His family does not believe he could have drown.
Nick was 28 years old at the time of his disappearance. He was born on May 23, 1962. He is Caucasian, standing at 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighed 141 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. It is believed Nick had his wallet on him. He had a yellow rain suit, pants and jacket. He was carrying a blue backpack which was recovered.
Did the two men have something to do with Nick's disappearance? Did Nick get a weird hunch about the men and his instinct was to lie and make it seem like he was leaving the cabin? Did his sister's death have anything to do with decisions made? I am more inclined to believe that someone took Nick, rather than him drowning or going off on his own.
West Side Story (1961)
So much emotion can be found in a whistle. After the overture, the film adaptation of Bernstein’s masterpiece is established in helicopter shots and whistles sending out taunts. New York, turf to be claimed. Initially, the intonations are haunting but melodic, centering around that central interval which defines the musical, the tritone. This diabolus in musica can be “the most beautiful sound I ever heard” if referring to María, or it can signal gang-land antagonism. But it can also be downright intimidation, the Sharks and Jets finding ways to whistle like cads pursuing someone down the street to chase unwanted rivals off their turf. This interlinking of the identities of the story and its music is key to the power of this film. The creatives behind its source captured lightning in a bottle. Leonard Bernstein finds brilliance in charting the length and breadth of American musical sensibilities as he creates a conflicted identity for this New York in extremis. A Sondheim early in his career begins to show his lyrical wit while also demonstrating a proclivity for meditating on a key term which becomes pivotal later: ‘tonight’ is initially innocuous, but that seed germinates in the powerful Quintet, wherein a single night can represent an endpoint (the rumble) or infinite possibilities (Tony and María). There are certainly problems here, even beyond the widespread brownface casting. The updated lyrics to “America” are still troubling, even if this represents an effort on some level to present the frustrating plight of emigration in search of a better life. But in a way Bernstein’s score offers a dark rebuttal: Anita’s attempted rape is accompanied by strains of that same song, the jaunty hemiola not so catchy when a woman is being assaulted by a gang. Perhaps the country she has so much hope for is more of a racist shithole than she’d led herself to believe. This same journey from consonance to dissonance defines the score. Tony makes beauty out of a traditionally abhorrent interval with his adulation of María, implying that this gang conflict is arbitrary and false. But it’s a cry into the void. When Tony and María first reunite and serenade each other with “Tonight,” their final farewells are accompanied by an upward-reaching gesture in strings and woodwinds. It’s hopeful and yet incomplete. After Tony dies and María is left with hate in her heart for the first time, Bernstein builds an exquisite, towering cathedral of dissonance, pinched brass and surly lower strings closing in on the suddenly ashamed gang members. The film closes with that same hopeful gesture. But it’s been filled in at last, with a dark, dissonant pedal tone. The music, this love, is left unresolved.
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (John Hough, 1974)
Cast: Peter Fonda, Susan George, Adam Roarke, Vic Morrow, Eugene Daniels, Kenneth Tobey, Roddy McDowall, Lynn Borden, Adrianne Herman, James W. Gavin. Screenplay: Lee Chapman, Antonio Santean, based on a novel by Richard Unekis. Cinematography Michael D. Margulies. Production design: Philip Leonard. Film editing: Christopher Holmes. Music: Jimmie Haskell.
"Dirty Mary" is Mary Coombs (Susan George), a petty thief and groupie who gets involved with Larry Rayder (Peter Fonda), a would-be NASCAR star, when he pulls off a supermarket heist with the aid of Deke Sommers (Adam Roarke), an alcoholic auto mechanic, and goes on a run that develops into a widespread, high-speed car (and helicopter) chase, masterminded by state police captain Everett Franklin (Vic Morrow). And that's pretty much all you need to know about Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, except that the title does a disservice to Deke, the third in the trio and the only close-to-interesting character in the film. Mary and Larry might as well be animated cartoons for all the humanity their characters generate, and George and Fonda play them accordingly. (George's manic performance, often lapsing into her native British accent, got on my nerves.) But Roarke makes some effort to provide some nuance to Deke, a loser whose fondness for the bottle makes him unemployable even though he's shown to be a master at making bashed-up automobiles run. He's also somewhat in love with Larry, his one chance at redemption. Otherwise, the real stars of the film are the cars, a 1966 Chevrolet Impala, a 1969 Dodge Charger, a bunch of Dodge Polara police cars, and that helicopter. You pretty much know how it's all going to end, and when it does it stops, having accomplished the inevitable with no need to point a moral or adorn a tale.
Old Friends // Leonard Cohen
An old man tells his friend (over the telephone) that he is going to shul that evening. It is a broken- down shul in a hostile black neighbourhood in Los Angeles. There is never even half a minyan (ten men). The worshippers are old, the prayers are badly spoken, the place is draughty and full of shabbiness and lumbago. The old man is inviting his friend to laugh with him over the wreck of a failed spiritual adventure, an adventure in which both of them once cherished the highest hopes. But his friend does not laugh. His friend becomes Nachmanides, the Bodhidharma, and St. Paul all rolled into one religious accountant. “You should not have told me that you were going to shul. You lose all the merit you would have gained had you remained silent.” What? Merit? Silence? Who is the old man talking to? That's rich. His friend is rebuking him for boasting about his piety, but he lets it go (sort of). After they say goodnight, the old man puts on his robes, which don't fit so well now that he's given up smoking. There is an almost full bottle of Prozac on his night-table. He bought the refill a couple of months ago, but almost immediately stopped taking the pill. It didn't work. Hardly anything works anymore. You can't even tell your friend (over the telephone) about your lumbago without getting a lecture. At least his dentist didn't reproach him when he went back last week. After two years' absence and a rotting mouth which everyone (dentist, assistant, himself) could smell when the scraping started. His dentist was an old man too. “Let's tackle this,” was all he said. The old man ties the strings of his robe and puts on all the lights in the house (so he won't get robbed again). He drives into the war zone, locking his doors on the way, and he parks in the courtyard of the zendo (it isn't really a shul). Eunice is there. She's been there for twenty-five years. “At my age,” I heard her say the other night, something about how easily she catches cold now. Koyo is there. I forget his Christian name. The fingers of his right hand are swollen from a cat bite. Infected. He fumbles with the incense. Eunice sneezes and coughs and hacks. A police helicopter drowns out the chanting. The place is freezing. Just the three of us. The fluff is coming out of the cushion, just like the juice is coming out of this story, and I'm not pissed off at you anymore either, Steve. And what is more, old friend, you have a point. You have a point.
'Do you want me to kill myself?' Lawyer faces court over allegedly interfering with witness
Editor’s note: After this story was first published, the charge against Eidan Havas was dismissed.
Nobody disputes there were two text messages and two phone calls.
But what Sydney lawyer Eidan Havas now considers an "error of judgment", NSW Police say is a criminal offence punishable by up to seven years imprisonment.
Sydney laywer Eidan Havas is filmed repeatedly slamming his head against a door.
It is not in dispute that in July this year, Mr Havas, 35, sent two text messages
It is not in dispute that in July this year, Mr Havas, 35, sent two text messages and made two calls to a woman, who cannot be named.
The woman had taken an apprehended violence order out against a man, who had hired Mr Havas as his solicitor.
"Hi [redacted], Eidan Havas here. I'm the solicitor for [redacted], I was just curious if you're still proceeding with the AVO tomorrow", one text allegedly read.
"Are you still going to proceed this morning? [Redacted] has to pay for a barrister if you are. Sorry to offend you", read a second text message allegedly sent the next day.
Mr Havas also allegedly rang the woman twice.
Outside Manly Local Court on Wednesday, Mr Havas' QC Winston Terracini said his client would be pleading not guilty.
"There is potential for this to be construed as an error of judgment. But certainly this case does not display any evidence of criminal intent by Mr Havas," he said.
Mr Havas was this month arrested outside the same court where he had just appeared for a client.
He was charged with influencing a witness and will return to court in September.
It is understood the Law Society have been informed about the charges against Mr Havas, who continues to practise at his firm Havas Legal.
In a video taken two days after the second alleged text message and obtained by the Herald, Mr Havas repeatedly slams his head into a door and yells 'What do you want from me? Do you want me to kill myself? Is that what you want?'
Mr Havas has acted for a number of high-profile Sydney identities, including prison helicopter escapee John Killick, accused family court bomber Leonard Warwick and disgraced former Auburn deputy mayor Salim Mehajer.
Mr Havas took the extraordinary step of holding a press conference denouncing his former client last year on the steps of the Federal Court, after Mehajer branded him "incompetent".
"If he has done anything wrong he can't take the blame for himself.
"It is always somebody else's fault," said Mr Havas of his former client, who he claimed had not paid him.
Mr Havas was also in the spotlight when he and his client Hussein Ayoub turned up at the Kogarah Police Station as police were giving a press conference saying they wanted to speak to Mr Ayoub.
In turn, Mr Havas launched his own press conference, saying Mr Ayoub was considering a defamation claim against NSW Police.
"Police have released a media release saying they would like to speak to my bloke.
"He is here today, they don't want to speak to him."
WTNV quick rundown - 134 - Fall Football Preview
Read the rest here!
There is no I in team. This has been a partial list of Letters Not Found in the Word 'Team.' Welcome to Night Vale.
NV HS Scorpions kick off the varsity football season against last year's district champions, Red Mesa.
Nazr is not coaching this year, he's taking a sabbatical due to previous personal issues. Taking over in his place is Latrice Beaumont. She used to be a player herself and is the first Gemini ever hired as coach. She calls a conference to talk about her new strategy and changes to the game.
Players mentioned include; Junius Duncan who is 5'4'', 120lbs, has 8 legs, no arms, a thorax and can jump up to 20 times his height and Prince Reynolds who has hydraulic joints installed in his shoulders. There is also Timothy Llano, their offensive guard.
One of the changes is a crack down on endzone celebrations. District head of officiating Jake Kemp states that in his day everyone was more conservative and not selfishly making the game about them. He then blames Millenials for ruining everything. When it's pointed out that current high schoolers are not millenials and that he, at 33, is one, Kemp makes himself age to 93.
There is also a rule saying players must have two or fewer legs which means Junius can't play.
Red Mesa players mentioned are; Salam Talib and Trung Pham (who has 20 inch antlers).
Everyone in Pine Cliff is a ghost, which makes their defence really weak. Cecil makes a bad pun about them coming 'dead last' which his producer, Ian, dislikes because his mother was part of the Great Cataclysm of 2008 that resulted in the residents all becoming ghosts. Their running back is called Alfonso Menendez.
Cactus Park senior running back Patrick Lyle is being encouraged to hold the ball and not put it in his pocket.
DBToo now has a new team and wants to start playing again, although there are worries about crossing between the DOW and this one for other players, theoretical physicist Cedric Dumond from DB Junior College tells them they need to stop looking at the bad and think about the good instead. Their kicker is called Leonard Clayton.
The Whispering Forest is now an independent and ever growing township with it's own football team this year. Despite all of them being trees. They won't be able to do much but recruit the other team to their side by turning them into trees. Their team is the Wood Dogs.
Coach Beaumont's new strategy is 'surprise'. The team will play all 5 rival teams at once, in 5 minutes from her saying that. At first their chances of winning the game seem slim, then Beaumont gets Junius to stand on his back two legs and pretend the rest of his legs are arms, thus technically allowing him to play and win the game for them.
Weather: "Raising Helvetica" by Sims x Air Credits x ICETEP
Football games in NV start with the national anthem, the pledge of allegiance, the eldritch chant of national unity, the secret police helicopter flyover, and the pre-game Blood Stone Bacchanal Dance.
Cecil, Carlos, Abby, Steve and Janice all go and see the game.
The library is having a used book sale, which is a thinly veiled attempt at trapping people.
Traffic tells us about a woman called Lisa Farmer, who seems to be living a somewhat unfulfilled life.
Stay tuned next for "Gentle Takes": our political roundtable where the hosts listen to each other talk about their days while they knit and say 'thanks for sharing that with me.' Good night Night Vale. Good night.
To the Vietnam War veterans of Yates County - welcome home
By Jonathan Monfiletto
To any veteran of the Vietnam War reading this article, I simply say, “Welcome home.” Thank you for your service and your sacrifice – a service that was not properly acknowledged when it first happened and a sacrifice that continues to this day.
As a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard, I am still amazed and humbled by the reception and response I received whenever I was travelling in uniform and particularly when I returned home from my only deployment. I served neither in a combat role nor even in a combat support role; my role on the deployment amounted to a nine-to-five, Monday-to-Friday desk job during what constituted a nine-month working vacation. Still, my comrades and I were welcomed as heroes at the airport.
I know that is essentially the opposite of the welcome – if you could call it that – that many Vietnam War veterans received when they returned home from one of the most harrowing conflicts the U.S. military has ever been involved in. I often wonder if it is the lesson learned from that reception – the verbal and physical assaults upon U.S. service members – that turned around attitudes toward service members and made it possible for my comrades and I to be treated as heroes indeed.
That is my introduction to this article about Yates County’s role in the Vietnam War, one with a bit of a tangent. It turns out the collections of the Yates County History Center are scant when it comes to a full listing of the people from Yates County who served during this conflict. In fact, this article was inspired by an inquiry from the Yates County Veterans Services Agency that made me realize the dearth of names of local Vietnam War veterans.
Nevertheless, while sparse, our subject file on the Vietnam War does contain some photocopies of newspaper articles related to the accomplishments and achievements of those from Yates County who served in Vietnam. While there are also newspaper articles related to local opinions on the war – both for and against – I will avoid those for the sake of the appreciation and gratitude this article hopes to convey to these special veterans. That being said, here are some stories of Yates County residents who served in the military during the Vietnam War.
---
In 1967, Specialist 4 Keith Seager, of Penn Yan – son of local author Ralph Seager, a World War II veteran himself – received the Army Commendation Medal for his support of helicopter units of the 1st Cavalry Division in An Khe, South Vietnam. Working as an operations noncommissioned officer with a supply and services battalion, then only a private first class, Seager – 27 years old at the time – instituted a system of procedures to ensure there never was a shortage of critical items.
“On several occasions he traveled to Cam Ranh Bay, Vung Tau, and Ah Khe to secure needed supplies and to accomplish his mission,” the award citation reads. “Although these liaison trips entailed long hours, hard work and a high degree of initiative, Sp4 Seager was consistently successful.”
Seager’s award states his contributions to the support of the forward helicopter units of the 1st Cavalry Division made them successful in their missions. His two-year deployment in Vietnam was to end in January 1968, and then he would transfer to Ford Leonard Wood, Missouri.
---
Also in 1967, an Army Commendation Medal was awarded to 1st Lt. Dorothy Fowler, of Penn Yan, upon the second anniversary of her enlistment. Twenty-three years old at the time, Fowler was serving with the Army Nurse Corps at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and had worked there since returning from Vietnam the previous year.
At the same time, Fowler was also selected to represent the Army Nursing service in “Prelude to Taps,” a major event of the 1967 Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. The event features the 3rd Infantry and the U.S. Army Band and Chorus depicting the nation’s military heritage and development through historical tableaus, flag salutes, and periodic music.
Fowler was accepted into the Army student nurse program in 1963, completing two years of study at St. Joseph’s Hospital school of nursing in Elmira and commissioning in March 1965. She was assigned to Fort Benning, Georgia after basic orientation at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. She then volunteered for duty in Vietnam and received her orders the day she graduated from the 22-week operating room nurse course at Fort Benning.
Fowler spent most of her year overseas at Nha Trang at the 8th Field Hospital’s 500-bed complex. She called her Vietnam service “a study in improvisation, an opportunity to develop personal responsibility and self confidence, and a tremendous professional nursing experience.”
---
According to a newspaper article dated 1966, Sgt. Wayne Searles had to call his parents in Dresden before his death notice reached them. He phoned them to tell them they would receive a telegram saying he had been killed in action. “Don’t you believe it. I am all right,” Searles, then 28 years old, reportedly told his mother.
It was Searles’ commanding officer who placed the call and then turned the phone over to the sergeant. He also told his parents he would write a letter when he could. Mrs. Searles said her son had written almost weekly since had been in the service, but when she had not received a letter for about four weeks she knew something might be wrong.
Marine Corps officials in Syracuse told the newspaper the erroneous telegram would undoubtedly be intercepted and not delivered. Searles enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately upon his graduation from Dundee High School and had served for 11 years by that point. A member of the championship pistol team of the Marine Corps, Searles had been on duty in Vietnam since November 1965.
The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle of September 30, 1966 recounted a frightening brush with danger experienced by Gordon Cornell, a then 32-year-old native of Penn Yan. The Navy lieutenant commander and his radar intercept officer, a lieutenant junior grade, were piloting their F-4 Phantom in North Vietnam. Barreling against the Yen Xa railroad and highway bridge about 10 miles south of Ninh Binh, the jet was in a dive when the Cornell’s buddy signaled the release of the bombs strapped beneath the jet’s wings.
Suddenly, “everything seemed to explode,” Cornell told the newspaper, and he looked in the rearview mirror to check on his buddy. Only then did he notice the brilliant sun in his eyes and realize he was looking through only half of his sun visor – flak had ripped through both cockpits, tearing off the sun visor and part of Cornell’s helmet and showering the inside of the jet with glass and smoke.
The task at hand immediately turned to flying the jet out of North Vietnam: “I was going to get that bird out over the water if I had to drag it all the way home,” Cornell said. Indeed, the Phantom made it to the deck of an aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Tonkin without further incident, and Cornell escaped with only minor cuts on his arm.
Graduating from Penn Yan Academy in 1951 and from Bennington College in Vermont in 1953, Cornell entered the Navy as a career man. He trained at Pensacola, Florida and took his jet training at Corpus Christi, Texas. He had been in Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier Constellation since the spring of 1965.
Another Navy sailor and Penn Yan native, Lt. Cmdr. David Lewis, was awarded the Navy Cross – second in prestige only to the Medal of Honor – for heroism in combat for ordering sandbags placed around his patient and then successfully removing an armed grenade projectile from the thigh of a wounded Marine. Stationed at the Naval Hospital at Portsmouth, Virginia when he received the award, Lewis performed the action in September 1969 while serving as a surgeon with the 1st Medical Battalion, 1st Marine Division in Vietnam.
“… a Marine was admitted to the battalion’s emergency receiving area with a serious wound in his thigh. Subsequent X-rays revealed that an armed grenade launcher round was imbedded in the tissue adjacent to the bone,” the award citation states. “After directing all personnel not positively necessary to assist him as he operated to immediately leave the area, Lt. Comm. Lewis supervised the careful removal of the wounded man to an operating room and then directed that sandbags be placed around the patient, leaving only room for himself to move while he worked with the casualty. Fully aware that the round could detonate at any moment, but concerned only for the welfare of the wounded man, Lt. Comm. Lewis then skillfully operated on his patient and successfully extracted the projectile.”
Lewis saved the man’s life and averted a potential disaster; he had previously received the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He attended Penn Yan Academy and then, after his family moved from the area, went on to Denison University in Ohio. He received his medical degree from the University of Rochester in 1962.
