Jessica's Big Little World - Palettes

Nancy cartoonist  Olivia Jaimes is taking a summer break from the strip, and to bridge the gap, Andrews McMeel has recruited several cartoonist to fill in on the popular strip, including Caroline Cash, Shaenon K. Garrity, Megan McKay and the creator of the first Jaimes-less comic, Leigh Luna. The publisher and Jaimes have been coy about when the strips would start — supposedly they weren’t supposed to debut until July, but surprise! Luna’s strip went live today, so we’ll have to check back tomorrow to see if there’s another guest artist.

Pitch for an “Among Us” horror movie:

1) The story is centered on a 10-man crew that is on an expedition to one of Jupiter’s moons, Europa. However, midway into the trip, the ship is infiltrated by two, hostile shapeshifting aliens that takes the place of two crew members. The rest of the movie is about the crew trying to stay alive by finding out who are the imposters among them.

2) The astronauts use colors as their code names. So, “Red” doesn’t actually wear red but is addressed as red by the other crew members.

3) The cast:

* Gabriel Luna as “Orange”

* May Calamawy as “Green”

* Hailee Steinfeld as “Cyan”

* Jon Bernthal as “Maroon”

* Daniel Dae Kim as “White”

* Grace Byers as “Red”

* Pilou Asbæk as “Purple”

* Keir Gilchrist as “Pink”

* Ashley Park as “Black”

* Leigh Whannell as “Blue”

4) The death count:

* Leigh Whannell is killed by the impostors first

* Ashley Park is killed by the impostors second

* Grace Byers is killed by the second impostor, revealing that there were two impostors in the crew the whole time

“oh god. if i died, she would totally make an episode about what happened, wouldn’t she?” she’d likely garner all the sympathy too, while the actual victim quickly fades into obscurity. if nothing else, at least leigh would finally have some peace; that might make the whole 'being murdered' thing somewhat worth it. “what happens if this doesn’t end anytime soon? you said we can leave for a while until it all blows over, but let’s be real, the cops are useless. we can’t exactly stay in california forever and honestly, they probably have more serial killers than we do... they never got the zodiac, you know.”

Ok almost two months later and for some reason my brain has finally developed the ability to remember what Emi Shinohara’s voice sounds like, so now every time I think of Mako speaking I hear both her voice and Amanda Miller’s voice one after the other. It’s chaotic, but I guess my brain has decided that both va’s are equal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s interesting to me in my brain which default voice/voice actor I think of for the different sailor moon characters, and which ones I can switch around? Usually I’m going between the Japanese vas and the Viz dub vas. Like for Usagi, Minako, and Ami I usually default to their Japanese vas but can still switch to their English vas easily, whereas Rei and Mako I usually default to their English vas? Though Rei is like 50/50. Mako is special though cause I feel like Amanda Miller personally has some strong hold over my brain’s perception of Mako cause I cannot even HEAR what Mako’s Japanese va sounds like in my head.

and then like, for the outer senshi Haruka’s default is her Japanese va, but Michiru and Setsuna I think I default to the Viz dub again? But their voices are so mushed in my head for all I know I could be hearing the Japanese vas. For Mamoru I 100% hear his Japanese va, that’s all my brain is satisfied with. For Luna, Artemis, and Diana though… idk. I think i hear Artemis’s Japanese and English va 50/50, I really like them both. for Diana I think of her Viz dub va cause that’s the one I know the best, but for Luna i really have no idea. Like whereas the other ones which are mixed it feels like the voices are kind of mushed together, Luna’s Japanese and English voices are so distinct, but I can hear both of them, so it’s confusing? I prefer the her Japanese va though. chibi usa is special cause for her I hear Rini’s fucking voice cause I prefer that portrayal of ChibiUsa lmao, that’s the only one where I hear a dub va from the og dub, but that one is also barely cause i am so familiar with her va from the viz dub.

There's also a lot of discussion of exactly where wealthy Europeans' money was coming on, and the ties between the aristocracy and colonialism, slavery, and exploitation.

An Island Princess Starts a Scandal by Adriana Herrera: This sapphic romance did a really lovely job of showing that yes, queer people of color existed throughout history and particularly in Paris at this time. The book also makes a case for how intertwined capitalism and colonialism is, and by the end, Cora comes to the realization that maybe being one of the few women in a powerful position in a capitalist system isn't exactly the feminist win many still think it is.

A Tropical Rebel Gets the Duke by Adriana Herrera (out 2/5/25): I have to give Adriana Herrera props for the level of medical research she must have done because this book REALLY gets into the nitty-gritty of how women suffered (and still suffer!) when they did not have access to proper medical care, and the extent to which the patriarchy (husbands, fathers, law enforcement, etc.) prevents women from having this access. The heroine Aurora is a Black woman of Dominican-Mexican descent; she's one of the few qualified female doctors of the time, and she's LITERALLY putting her life and body on the line to help these women by setting up an underground women's clinic.

A Rose Blooms in Brooklyn by Ginny Moore: Another historical dealing with reproductive rights except in the United States around the turn of the century. The hero runs a women's shelter and was widowed after his late wife died during childbirth because they did not have access to contraception. And his shelter is based out of the poorer areas of Brooklyn, you really see how working class women and immigrant women suffer from the lack of reproductive healthcare access.

The Counterfeit Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath: I really like the level of specificity Lorraine Heath offers in a lot of her romances when it comes to less-discussed aspects of women's rights. In England, divorce was extremely difficult for women specifically to obtain, and the hero has a lot of guilt over his own mother, so he helps women by pretending to have affairs with them, and that way, their husbands can divorce them for adultery, a process that would be MUCH easier than wives trying to find cause to divorce their husbands.

The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics by Olivia Waite: A quieter, more introspective sapphic romance that hits on some issues that are pretty prevalent to this day; It intertwines themes of women’s intellectual labor being rejected or undervalued, but then traditional women’s work is ALSO undervalued. Lucy’s contributions to the astronomy field are repeatedly devalued by male scientists or used without credit, and Catherine’s embroidery isn’t “high art” and therefore not worth notice or artistic approval. You really can't win with the patriarchy, basically.

Temptations of a Wallflower by Eva Leigh: If you're looking for something lighter that takes on themes of censorship, specifically censoring sexual content geared towards women. The heroine secretly writes erotica under a pen name and inadvertently educates women through her writing, and the hero is charged by his powerful father to bring her down without knowing her true identity.

I do think Liana De la Rosa's Luna Sisters series gets into the intersectionality of the feminist movement but overall has stronger anti-racist, anti-imperialist themes. The sisters are all undervalued by their father, who is a high-ranking official in President Juarez's government-in-exile, and Isabel especially wants to make something of herself and offers to spy for the exiled First Lady of Mexico in order to fight the French occupation of Mexico. Ana Maria on the other hand takes the classic but historically undervalued route of being something of a political hostess, but using her power to advocate for her husband's progressive policies and anti-slavery bill.

The Lady Charlotte's Society of Angels series by Grace Callaway: What I appreciate about this series is that the Society is willing to provide investigative services to women who are often turned away by male investigators and men in power. Also, there are significant subplots with multiple heroines who hide their jobs from their love interests because they're afraid they will make them stop. Ultimately, none of them do, which is actually quite progressive compared to the one Grace Callaway heroine from a previous gen who basically gave up her investigator ambitions after marriage.

There are a lot more historical romances that have more subtle feminist themes (ex: I was just thinking about Bed Me, Earl by Felicity Niven where the heroine realizes that none of the men in her life— her brother, her husband— bothered to tell her how shitty her husband's finances were before marrying him despite there being affection on BOTH their parts before marriage, but she's made to bear the brunt of those consequences anyway, and legally has no recourse or rights post-marriage. The nice thing is, the husband fully agrees to put his finances in her hands so she can fix them, and there is a rather hysterical "you're pulling out until our money situation is stable" sitch as a result) but I wanted to focus on ones that felt standout to me. I also have thoughts on historicals that use intersectionality as window dressing, basically, which you can read here.

When Ruby reveals that Jaune had been unhealthily protecting the Paper Pleasers and named them after everyone there, not a word is spoken as everyone exchanges concerned and uncomfortable looks with each other.

When Ruby talks about the Paper Pleasers offing themselves by drowning in the koi pond dam, then her blowing up at the others, everyone leans in anxiously…

…while Weiss, Blake, Yang, and Jaune share looks of guilt.

When Ruby reveals that Neo made clone illusions of their dead allies and beat her up with them, then gave in and drank the poison tea, everyone regards Ruby sorrowfully.

When Ruby reveals that Summer lied to them and left with Raven before never returning, then Raven cracks about how she told Summer, “First time for everything,” the gang gives her a look.

When Ruby reveals that she decided to be herself, came back, and helped the girls beat the Cat, everyone cheers for them.

When Ruby reveals that Neo used the Jabberwalkers to eat the Cat, everyone is shocked again.

When Ruby shares the Brother Gods’ backstory, and Nora jokes that the Tree was their mom and kicked them out for misbehaving, the gang can’t resist growing hysterical.
