The Do-Over by Rodrigo Vargas and Coni Yovaniniz

Mariana and her dad have moved to a new place after her mother passed away. She just doesn't know how to make friends as she is so shy. Her dad is nice, but he doesn't seem to know how to talk to her, which also makes things hard. Eventually, Mariana comes across Zoe and Everly and the three decide to make a hair styling studio.

With the help of Mariana's grandmother, they're able to find a truck for a mobile salon and have named it True Colors. They're even going to enter the Harvest Fest. Of course, the three girls aren't exactly on the same page of how the salon should move forward, which causes some distress for everyone. Will the three be able to mend their friendship in time for the Harvest Fest?

I thought this was a lovely little read. The art was simple, yet colorful. I like that they were able to come together with a business idea (though I'm not sure how they got the licenses to cut hair as children. Hah!) The relationship between Mariana and her father was obviously a caring one, but, as its revealed later, they both terribly miss Mariana's mom and aren't sure how to cope with their feelings and with each other. The graphic novel touches on loss and how you can be lost without being too heavy.

I also enjoyed how Mariana and her family easily switched between Spanish and English and how it was easy enough to get context from what they were saying, even if you don't speak Spanish.

The 33 (2015)

The 2010 Copiapó mining accident was practically made for a feature-length film adaptation. Of course, there are a few liberties taken here and there but the essentials remain. Though you will find some familiar - some would say clichéd - elements in The 33, it works as a straightforward inspirational disaster story.

In Chile, the San José mine collapses, trapping 33 men deep underground. Though they made it to the mine's rescue chamber, they have little food and water. Determined to survive, they band together under the leadership of Mario Sepúlveda (Antonio Banderas) while their families above pressure the government to begin an extensive rescue operation.

Besides Mario Sepúlveda, you might not remember everyone’s name, but enough time is spent with key people for you to recognize who’s who. That one’s the Bolivian (Tenoch Huerta) who's worried the Chileans won't accept him - particularly when food runs out. There’s the one who loves Elvis Presley (Jacob Vargas), the pastor (Marco Treviño), the alcoholic (Juan Pablo Raba) who never got the chance to reconnect with his sister (Juliette Binoche), the one whose wife is pregnant with their first child, the one everyone is laughing at because up on the surface, he has two women fighting over him - his wife and his mistress. In addition to the 33 miners, there are many characters on the surface to keep track of: the Minister of Mining of Chile (Rodrigo Santoro as Laurence Golborne), the driller who supervises the rescue operation (James Brolin), several of the wives or sisters and more. This could've been a major issue, and director Patricia Riggen keeps this in mind. The 33 structures itself in a way that if you’re confused about who’s who, it will only be for a half-second. The editing and dialogue - more so than the characters’ faces, which become increasingly dirty and thin as more time is spent underground - ensure you know who you’re dealing with in each scene. That's practically a miracle in itself.

Though some of the story does exactly what you expect it to, it does these scenes well. The mine's owner has to roll his eyes when the initial safety concerns are brought up. The miners have to ration their food and figure out plans while waiting to be rescued. Their families have to make sure their voices are heard. The government has to worry about what the voters will say if the operation fails. A better film would have more scenes like the miner’s “last supper”, when they use their imaginations to bring in all of their loved ones to transform an omen of dread into a beacon of hope but there really any bad scenes in the entire running time.

The 33 makes you feel the feels you expect, makes you wonder what you would do if you were put in this exact scenario, keeps you guessing enough that you remain invested all the way through and leaves you pleased because all of your expectations were met. I don’t think it’s a picture you’ll come back to over and over again, but that’s fine. While it lasts, The 33 tells an interesting story you’ll be glad to have seen and as a rental, you'll get more than your money's worth. (On Blu-ray, September 30, 2021)

Day Thirteen: Fear

This is a part of another story I am writing - not sure if I'm ever going to use it. There are of course out of context references to other characters, but it does fit the prompt and off we go...

Julieta noticed that Agustín was keeping a random eye on Bubo Márquez while he was helping her. Since he’d not yet had the chance to speak with him, he was unusually distracted. She reminded him that an injury now would lead to a lot of questions she’d prefer to hold off answering. He reminded her that they did talk about this before bed last night, but she’d fallen asleep at some point as he was talking. She felt bad about it in the morning since Isabela’s obvious interest was something new in their world and though she was an adult, her husband was not at all sure how he felt about that. Well, that really was a worry for later as she watched Félix set down Señora Vargas’s things and walk away from her and her son. Those two were trouble for the town, and that was a certainty.

A few minutes later, her mother came up next to her and said, “Just so you know, I’ve spread the word that no one is to help them if they cannot even be courteous to Félix.”

Julieta smiled and said, “Guess it’s a good thing Pepa’s back at home taking care of supper. We still inviting them?”

Her mother rolled her eyes and paused before she said, “Yes, unfortunately.”

“I’ll ask Rodrigo or José to extend the invitation. They seem able to handle them pretty well.”

“We really should do that ourselves,” her mother said with a noticeable frown.

“Mamá, you already want to throttle them,” Julieta said and put a hand on her mother’s arm.

Her mother shrugged and said, “Possibly. Very well, hija, I’ll let you take care of that. Have you seen Bubo Márquez? I noticed when we emptied that old shoe shop, that it would be a good size home for him and Tuli... if she stays, that is.”

“He was helping Mariano and Osvaldo earlier.” Julieta looked around. “Not sure where he’s gotten off to, Mamá.”

“Well, it was just a thought,” she said as she picked up one of the baskets of sandwiches, and they got back to the business of getting people settled. In a way, Julieta was a little surprised her mother even suggested it. No one had wanted to live in that house, considering what had happened there. Of course, anytime it was suggested, the rumor mill would kick into high gear and the superstitions and shame tied to suicide tended to make it that much worse.

She saw the Doctor making his way through the crowd toward her, and Julieta waved. After Doris’s reaction to being unknowingly magically healed, Julieta decided it would be best if she spoke with the Doctor. He’d come to evaluate whether folks needed any sort of healing. She noticed that many were relieved to find they had a ‘real’ Doctor here, and Dr. Gonzalez almost seemed happy to have something to do, since he understood her problem. Most of the people that had arrived with him, had initially whispered that the talk of lost magic was really witchcraft, and they would have been afraid to allow themselves to be healed in such a way believing they would be marked by the devil. This was the primary reason she had been reluctant to let Mirabel go with them on the mountain the previous day. Frightened people did foolish things in the name of righteousness, and she did not want that aimed at her youngest child. When her brother insisted she let Mira go with the folks meeting this new group, Julieta realized it was now her fear that was holding Mirabel back.

▪︎ due to this background life, he excelled in his recruit days, was later assigned to the special forces under Colonel Varagas' squad-Los Vaqueros-and became their k-9 unit specialized for recon/intel gathering and weapon specialist

▪︎ he's used to death so he found it funny when Alejandro and the rest felt it was concerning he didn't have much of a reaction during their first assignment unlike most new recruits, he may be used to it but it doesn't make it easier

▪︎ His alias was given by Alejandro. After getting Toby to be his companion, the other Vaqueros liked to joke around and comment on how the dog followed Rigo everywhere, and since Rigo is small and sneaky in the field "el sabueso siempre sigue al zorro" . *So it *stuck, he's el zorrito de la base.

▪︎ Toby gets his name from The Fox and the Hound, Copper is named Toby in the Spanish dub of the movie. One fox and a dog, always together.

▪︎ His last name is my mother's maiden name, I could've gone with my dad's but we already have a Vargas lmao.

▪︎ Barware, if you value your life, dare not mention his stature, you will be sent to the medic. Only exceptions are his hubbies of course, they get to manhandle him all they want.
