La Tempesta del Secolo fu ispirata a Stephen King da una foto di un uomo in una cella, suggerendo una natura malvagia; la storia si svolge su Little Tall Island, una comunità isolata nel Maine, dove gli abitanti si conoscono tutti e non ci sono mai stati delitti fino a quel momento. Il racconto esplora il lato oscuro della comunità e le scelte morali sotto pressione, con il personaggio di André Linoge che rappresenta il male.

André Linoge è un misterioso e malvagio straniero che arriva a Little Tall Island durante una tempesta e si rivela capace di manipolare gli abitanti, sfruttando i loro segreti più oscuri. Linoge dice loro "datemi ciò che voglio e me ne andrò", rivelando di desiderare uno dei bambini dell'isola per farne il suo successore; minaccia di uccidere tutti i bambini e indurre un suicidio di massa se non ottiene ciò che vuole.

Il nome Linoge in "La Tempesta del Secolo" è un anagramma di "Legione": si riferisce a un demone descritto nei vangeli; nel nuovo testamento, il demone si identifica dicendo: "Mi chiamo Legione, perché siamo in molti".

Il nome "Legione" ha una lunga storia: principalmente associato alle legioni romane, unità militari fondamentali dell'esercito romano; in latino, "legio" deriva dal verbo "legere", che significa "raccogliere": le legioni erano composte da soldati e costituivano la spina dorsale delle forze armate romane, giocando un ruolo cruciale nelle conquiste e nell'espansione dell'Impero Romano.
