The legacy of slavery is not just history; it's woven into the inequalities we face today. The roots of racism were planted centuries ago during the brutal transatlantic slave trade, and they still shape our world. If anything else happens to me, this post will remain on the internet for someone, anyone to see. Just months ago during Me Too discussions online, I named who carried out sexual battery against me.  @buzzfeeduk

This semester, the Legacy of Slavery in Maryland Program at the Maryland State Archives partnered with the University of Maryland iSchool and the Digital Curation Innovation Center to launch a collaborative project. Student teams worked with digitized materials from the holdings of the Maryland State Archives, including census records and certificates of freedom. They visually displayed the digitized data and showed the complex relationships between slave owners, former enslaved individuals, and the community. It is a great partnership with innovative use of the visualization technology to help to begin telling the untold stories of the enslaved and freed African American Marylanders. Legacy of Slavery Program Archivist Ryan Cox was pleased to view the first phase of student analysis at the recent poster presentation on December 4 at The University of Maryland College Park. Kudos to all involved!

Picking cotton in a 6 foot sack. My grandfather's sister, "Aunt Lady," told me one of the family's main reason to leave South Carolina was to do something other than pick cotton. They moved to Florida c. 1920. #agriculture #cotton #childlabour #legacyofslavery

Scholastic has since issued a response and discontinued sales of the book but the fact it was not only printed but distributed to children in the first place remains problematic and telling. Everyone involved knew exactly what they were doing. From referring to slaves as ‘unpaid laborers’ and 'workers’ in text books to renaming the slave trade and printing toxic romanticized versions of slavery such as this it is clear as day that history is being rewritten before our eyes. This is one book of God knows how many. I’m given hope by the outrage, organization and the numbers that gathered so quickly to bring this particular attempt to a stop but it’s so imperative that we raise children who will be quick to do the same. We have to learn and spread our own history and we have to create our own narratives as often and as publicly as possible. #WhiteWashing #RewritingHistory #Slavery #NeverForget #AmericanHistory #romanticizingthepast #GeorgeWashington #ACakeForGeorgeWashington #BooksThatShouldNeverHaveBeenWritten #AntiBlacknessInDisguise #legacyofslavery

The Legacy of Slavery Project developed a traveling exhibit - Flee! - for libraries, museums, and other historical institutions. Check out the themes on each panel as well as personal stories of individuals who fought against the institution of slavery in Maryland. It’s an incredible snippet of the research the department has conducted over the years, highlighting efforts towards freedom. Feel free to contact us if your institution would like to host a copy!
