#TBT to that time myself and 10 black and brown middle school girls took it upon ourselves to raise the money our school wouldn't provide by stepping on 42nd street so they could take their rightful place at nationals in Florida. We made $320 that day and with 2 bake sales and a little help from our more financially stable parents we were able to pay for our trip, food and accommodations. New York came in 3rd at nationals. If that ain't #BlackGirlMagic I don't know what is. #Step #Dance #SelfDetermination #CooperativeEconomics #Creativity #Empowerment #Community #Sisterhood #GirlPpwer

Just a friendly reminder. It's been a rough and ridiculous month post Trump if I'm being perfectly honest. But I promise to be back on your time lines in full effect shortly. Lots in store for 2017. Been trying to focus on making an impact OFFLINE. But I miss y'all. Sending love ❤️️

I love food and family as much as anyone but to celebrate these holidays without examining their sordid histories or their ramifications in modern society does us all a disservice. During 4th of July weekend this year dozens of black lives were lost to police violence. This is the norm. And every year we make these beautiful spreads and talk about what we're thankful for without acknowledging the indigenous genocide that took place on this stolen land centuries ago. As we speak the Sioux nation in North Dakota is fighting for a very simple human right- water. We must acknowledge these struggles and examine the role we play in perpetuating them by choosing comfort and complacency over humanity. We must stand for others the way we desire others to stand for us- not because there are similarities between African, Caribbean, Latino and indigenous struggles, but first and foremost because it's the right thing to do. Personally it really bothers me when someone only supports the movement for black lives because they have a significant other or adopted child who happens to black. Right is right no matter who you are. The same rules apply when we talk about supporting our indigenous brothers and sisters. Enjoy your family and your food today but PLEASE also take the time to acknowledge the indigenous who continue to fight for their right to life, land and water. We must all stand with standing rock. #NoDAPL #WaterIsLife #IStandWithStandingRock #RezpectOurWater #NationalDayOfMourning #IndigenousLivesMatter #IndigenousLandsMatter #IndigenousLegaciesMatter

In the same week that Donald Trump became President of the US (to the despair of women around the world), this powerful image was much needed. Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, was recently in the UAE as part of a Middle Eastern tour, where her and Prince Charles spent three days visiting Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. The British royals were here to promote religious tolerance and support women in leadership, among other things – but nothing sums it up better than this picture, released on Wednesday by Clarence House. During her visit, Camilla was accompanied by an all-female protection squad, the palace revealed. In the image, the royal is flanked by four Emiratis, each donning the traditional hijab and abaya as they guarded Camilla leaving the capital’s Emirates Palace Hotel. What a beautiful sight and reminder. The people united will never be defeated. #StopIslamophobia #GirlPower #LoveTrumpsHate #Representation #Hijab #Abaya

I can't really convey the myriad of emotions I felt when I took my 3 year old with me to vote on the way to school this morning but I'll just say this. I was only able to take part in this crooked system because I am working daily within my community to create the world I wish existed in a multitude of other ways. Voting is not now nor will it ever be where your political knowledge and participation should begin or end. I will continue to talk about the issues, whether they directly impact me or not, because that is true humanity and democracy and it is the only way to access this 'greatness' we claim to seek. Shouts to my activist, educator, creative, entrepreneur, hood femme, intersectional feminist, black radical fam and those able to understand it will never be simple or easy where politics and blackness are concerned. Thank you for listening without judgement and knowing the difference between a space for debate and a public sharing/healing session, rather than trying to rail road me when I was publicly sifting through MY truth. At some point we have to stop arguing and start building. Keep fighting the good fight and if this is your moment of awakening, I welcome you to join us. Sending love to those who voted their conscience whether that meant not voting, voting green or biting the bullet with Hillary. You honor your ancestors by exercising the right to FREEDOM they died for- not voting a specific way. #LetsGetFree

Mom Erica P. Shared her daughter Charlie's photo with @becauseofthem and I had to share it too! She put her costume together with her grandma's help and some pieces from her closet. How precious! Sending love to all our icons and heroes, past and present including Ms. Parks and then 15 year old Claudette Colvin who was arrested for not giving up her seat on a segregated bus months before Parks and ultimately was not acknowledged in our civil rights narrative because she happened to be a young mother. The more you know! #BlackGirlMagic #BlackHerStory #HappyHalloween #RosaParks #ClaudetteColvin #DIYCostumes #Halloween2K16 #StrengthThroughGenerations #KnowYourHistory #YPOC

If you're a die hard walking dead fan like I am you are aware of the greatness that is @steveyeun And you know he's no longer with us in the world of walkers. Check out this wonderful quote from our collective fave of the original walking dead crew. We'll never forget you Glenn. We'll find you ❤️ 'When you look back on your long tenure on The Walking Dead, what makes you proudest? Honestly, the privilege that I had to play an Asian-American character that didn't have to apologize at all for being Asian, or even acknowledge that he was Asian. Obviously, you're going to address it. It's real. It's a thing. I am Asian, and Glenn is Asian. But I was very honored to be able to play somebody that showed multiple sides, and showed depth, and showed a way to relate to everyone. It was quite an honor, in that regard. This didn't exist when I was a kid. I didn't get to see Glenn. I didn't get to see a fully formed Asian-American person on my television, where you could say, "That dude just belongs here." Kids, growing up now, can see this show and see a face that they recognize. And go, "Oh my god. That's my face too." #StevenYeun #TheWalkingDead #RepresentationMatters #Diversity #WalkingDeadSeason7

Man shoots at George Zimmerman and does not harm him during road rage incident. Gets 20 years in prison. George Zimmerman stalks and murders black boy. Boy's cries for help before shot rings out are caught in a 911 recording proving supposedly concerned citizen had no reason to use lethal force after scuffle. He is Acquitted. America. 2016. Let us once again publicly note the hypocrisy of this so called justice system. #BlackLivesMatter
