Session Report: Root.
𝗥𝗼𝗼𝘁 by Leder Games and designed by Cole Wehrle with Kyle Ferrin as an Artist, doesn’t need a lot of words, I guess, as by now, everybody in the boardgaming community knows, how great this game is. Since a couple of months, we have a monthly get together at our local boardgame bar Das Brett, to dive deeper into the game, cause this deserves to get played regularly. Not only are we trying out…

Marauders learned from Moles?
I don't think the timing works for this, but it sure seems like both factions in the Marauders expansion were designed with the lessons of the Moles.
Moles can just pop up, commit nothing meaningful to the board, and still get all the points they need. It essentially doesn't matter if they rule anything. This leads to games where they barely interact and other players have to attack them constantly.
Both the Marauders are constantly checking for rule, especially the Keepers, who check for rule three times, in up to 6 different clearings, just to gather a single trinket.
I think this design is rather clunky for the Keepers, but it's far better than Moles just ignoring most of their mechanics because it would be exposure to consequences.
The Rats might be the best designed faction, requiring you to actually engage with the other players and the entire board. Too bad they're not really compatible with Hirelings.
I think ROOT 2 would default to having Hirelings in the game so all the factions would be balanced around them. Also the player boards could have reminders to do Hireling stuff.

This weekend I finished this very important, very original word puzzle game for guessing Leder Games titles only about a year late to the Wordle trend

Just finished my first Blighted Reach campaign. We did the first two acts in one go, during which I scored exactly 0 power as I failed to complete my objectives (first as the Founder, then the Peacekeeper). Mutual respect, collective action and peaceful coexistence was obviously not rated high in this part of the Reach...
So I turned Overlord for the final Act. Each chapter brought me closer to victory as I managed to take control over enough planets and resources to take big steps towards completing my objectives, at which point I would only need one power to instantly win. This didn't go unnoticed by the player in lead (who had like 70 power at this stage) and sure enough, by the end of the third chapter I had only three ships left and controlled no planets with six steps to go on my objectives.
I scrambled what resources I had, outraged the Fuel people and took control of one of their cities. This was enough to finalize my objective!
But it was too late. Failing to seize the initiative to declare an ambition I could score, I was left out of the power struggle, which ended with a two power margin win at 97 to 95 for the Advocate who had held a steady lead since Act I.
In hindsight it's obvious I focused too much on objectives and too little on getting at least some power from acts I and II into act III, but I thoroughly enjoyed this campaign and I'm looking forward to my next venture into the Reach, blighted or not.

Arcs Coming to Digital from Dire Wolf Games in 2026
Arcs Coming to Digital from Dire Wolf Games in 2026 @direwolfdigital.bsky.social @leder.games
I didn’t think I’d be posting today, but getting an email from Dire Wolf Digital kind of forced me to! One of the big sensations currently in the boardgaming world is Arcs from Leder Games. Designed by Cole Wehrle with artwork by Kyle Ferrin, Leder Games published this game this last Summer (2024 for those reading in the future). I have sadly not played it, but I watched the Heavy Cardboard…

Dan starts his journey through space with some initial thoughts on Arcs, the latest game out now from Leder Games.

Anyways, I'm going into game two of my first campaign with negative points. At least I get to be a cool space pirate now.
Arcs is a fantastic board game - unfortunately I have The Stupid™ and shouldn't be allowed in the same county as a complicated strategy game.

Crystalline Throne of Whiterun
Concept art for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
*Artist Unclear* Ray Lederer worked on certain concepts for Whiterun and Dragonsreach but he doesn't include this piece in his portfolio of Skyrim art.
