In my L1-acquisition class two weeks ago, our professor talked about how only 9% of the speech a baby hears is single words. Everything else is phrases and sentences, onslaughts of words and meaning!
Thus, a baby not only has to learn words and their meanings but also learn to segment lots of sounds INTO words. Doyouwantalittlemoresoupyesyoudoyoucutie. Damn.
When she talked about HOW babies learn to segment words our professor said, and I love it, "babies are little statisticians" because when listening to all the sounds, they start understanding what sound is likely to come after another vs which is not.
After discussing lots of experiments done with babies, our professor added something that I already knew somewhere in my brain but didn't know I know: All this knowledge is helpful when learning an L2 as well:
Listen to natives speaking their language. Original speed. Whatever speaker. Whatever topic.
It is NOT about understanding meaning. It is about learning the rhythm of the language, getting a feeling for its sound, the combination of sounds, the melody and the pronunciation.
Just how babies have to learn to identify single words within waves of sounds, so do adults learning a language. It will help immensely with later (more intentional) listening because you're already used to the sound, can already get into the groove of the languge.
Be as brave as a baby.
You don't even have to pay special attention. Just bathe in the sound of your target language. You'll soak it up without even noticing.

3 Must-Know Aspects About German Language Vocabulary
In the acquisition of any language, learning the vocabulary plays a crucial role. More often than not, every language comes with its own set of nuances. In learning German language vocabulary, there are three particular aspects that you are required to recognize from the onset. This article shall help you with those accordingly.
Tumblr media
The Uniqueness:
German vocabulary has some fundamental characteristics. For instance, the use of articles depends largely on the nouns. So while 'the' is commonly used in English to describe singular/plural nouns, it's not the same with German. In German, in accordance to the noun form, you'll have to use 'der', 'das', or 'die'.
The usage of verbs is fairly uncomplicated. As with English, you just have to understand a few basic verb conjugation patterns. For instance, "I sit" or "He sits" would change to "Ich sitze" or "Er sitzt". Since most languages across the world see some changes to verb forms when used in different scenarios, verb conjugations in German aren't very hard to decipher.
The use of adjectives in German, on the other hand, can be quite a challenge. This is because German adjectives generally require specific endings in accordance to the nouns in question. Additionally, the case used in the sentence also plays an important role in these endings. Realize that these adjective endings can take some time to understand and master. A good thing is that often-times, these adjective endings are omitted or slurred in spoken German.
The Differences Between English and German:
While both these languages are predominantly different, you will notice certain similarities in their vocabulary. After all, a number of English words are quite similar sounding to their German counterparts. However, this does not mean you can necessarily use this knowledge to speak or understand German.
Will you be able to translate this to German? "Weißt du, was das bedeutet?"
How many of these words made any sense to you? In English, this translates to - "Do you know what that means?"
The point being, without prior knowledge of German, your knowledge of English will do little to help. When you cannot understand a significant part of a sentence, hoping to understand the entire sentence is a little farfetched.
The Words you Need to Learn:
Start by getting a good understanding of how to use articles correctly. This relates to using them in accordance to nouns as well as direct/indirect objects (which comes later in the learning process). Also familiarize yourself with the different forms of verbs, and with their usage in the past tense. Doing this becomes particularly important as you make progress.
In case you've already spent a year or more in learning German, also pay attention to the usage of prepositions. Learning an assortment of combinations will only help further your language learning foundation.
Bear in mind that these aforementioned aspects depend on an individual's learning requirements. In case you hope to master the language quickly, quickening your pace and learning more within a given time-frame is the only logical method. In case you're in no particular hurry, you can give each aspect as much time as you desire.

✨"Sehr geehrte Besucher, aufgrund Ihres hohen Alters ist unsere Leopardin leider gestorben"✨
The marking on the picture around the word "Ihres" points to the importance of proper capitalization of the formal you in German to distinguish it from her/your
ihr = her (feminine singular possessive pronoun) / your (plural personal pronoun; this doesn't make sense here though)
aufgrund ihres hohen Alters -> because of her (the female leopards) old age
Ihr = you (formal)
aufgrund Ihres hohen Alters -> because of your (the readers)visitors) old age
Dear visitor, due to her old age, the female leopard has unfortunately passed away.
vs.
Dear visitor, due to your old age, the female leopard has unfortunately passed away.

language learning is such a personal thing that there is no “right” or “wrong” way of doing it. it’s whatever works on bringing YOU closer to YOUR goal.
you want to watch tv shows but don’t really care for speaking with others? yay!! no speaking practice needed.
you want to learn quickly for an upcoming trip? yay! text book phrases and simple grammar.
you’re a beginner and it’s been 10 years? 2 weeks? 6 months? it doesn’t matter. as long as you are working towards bringing YOURSELF closer to what YOU want to achieve, you have succeeded: you are succeeding; you are doing great.
i find that so much demotivation comes from comparison and/or trying to follow other's advice too closely. if anki decks don't work for you, that's fine! if duolingo works well for you, then use it!
this language learning thing, it should be enjoyed. in the sea full of deceptive polyglot stories and videos on top of videos attempting to understand how to learn languages in "the fastest way possible" sometimes we should sit back and ask ourselves, "when is just learning things, enough"?
with that i hope you all continue working towards your dreams! whether you want to become a translator or just watch a few more movies in your target language, you can do it. i know you have it in you.

Learn German Language - Fast and Straightforward
The German language was the first language that I learnt other than English and one that I really enjoy speaking. It can seem very difficult to teach yourself a new language at first, especially if you didn't learn a language during your school years. In this article I will discuss how I managed to become a fluent German speaker, and you can also do so quickly.
Tumblr media
I began learning German when I was in my teens, and although many people will also learn a language during their school years, many will not. Don't let this put you off however as it's very easy to learn a new language no matter how young or old you are. This is providing that you take the advice of someone who's managed to learn the German language and stear clear of some of the poor language guides that clutter the bookshelves.
I began learning German in the same way that many people do, by reading books. The problem that I certainly had (and I think many others do to) was that it is far more difficult to learn a language from reading a book than it is to learn interactively. I'll come onto what I mean by that a bit later.
The German language is particularly nice to learn and isn't as difficult as some other languages. The main area that many of my friends have had difficulty with whilst learning German is the sentence structure. This is common when trying to learn many other languages but it is easy to understand if you learn from a resource that is logical and clearly explained. Unfortunately many resources and guides are not.
Whatever your reason for wanting to learn German I definitely recommend going ahead and doing it. It is a really nice language to speak and comes in very useful if you ever travel to Germany. I happen to travel to the country a couple of times each year so it is particularly useful for me, but even if you just want to learn a new language German is a good choice.
When you begin to learn you may be tempted to visit your local bookstore and purchase a "Learn German Language" book. The way that I made fast progression in German speaking though was using a resource that is available online. Rather than having to read through page after page of German phrases and sentence examples, this resource provides learning material in the form of interactive audio lessons, grammar lessons, and software that not only makes learning more enjoyable, but also helps you to remember what you've been taught much better. You will find that learning this way is a much more beneficial way of learning German without getting confused, and you will learn much faster.
