ILC 2024
Last week I had the opportunity to attend the Express Employment Professionals International Leadership Conference in Denver, Colorado. The experience was nothing short of phenomenal and it was an amazing way to end out Q1. Beyond being a new city for me, Denver was a cool place to visit and the weather was amazing but the altitude is something to account for when flying in. Luckily I didn't pass out or projectile vomit anywhere, maybe it's all my Planet Fitness sessions paying off for me.
There were over 1500 people in attendance for the conference, made up of franchisee's (owners), office managers, Express's executive team and a packed roster of guest speakers. For those who don't know, Express is a global professional staffing agency that specializes in light industrial, professional, office services and direct hire employment. They are the premier staffing agency for virtually any client's need. Over the course of three and a half days, participants heard from the likes of Deion Sanders, Goldie Hawn, Chris Barton and Jess Wedell. Furthermore, two of the days included learning sessions that delved into a variety of topics, from sales tactics to leadership coaching.
The opportunity is truly something I am looking forward to attending again next year. The networking was unparalleled to anything I have experienced since graduating college and I was able to take away detailed pieces of wisdom both professionally and personally to build on.
Before ending this post, I want to write about something Deion Sanders spoke about during one of the general sessions in Denver. I have been following Coach Prime ever since he started at CU and hearing him speak was easily the highlight of the event for me. Coach Prime talked about "finding your rabbit", which is the thing in your life that is just out in front of you that you can't quite reach but motivates you to get after it every single day. For Coach Prime, it is his Mom. What is it for you ?
As the quarter comes to a close, take time to reflect on all that occurred these first three months. Use that time to adjust, pivot or maybe even double down on what worked for you. Keeping your "rabbit" in front of you, as Coach Prime talked about in Denver, will allow you to push past all the noise and distractions in your life to conquer what you set out to. Coach asked the question to us, "How can you expect greatness without consistency ?".
Proverbs 14:23 sums up my point perfectly and what I believe Deion's ultimate statement was with the rabbit analogy. Get after it, enjoy the journey but most importantly stay consistent and let everything else work itself out.
In Unity,
DaJuan

Gainesville Black Professionals Leadership Conference 2022
I had the opportunity to attend the annual Leadership Conference & Expo which was themed "Dismantling Racism...One 'Ism at a Time" hosted by realtor Craig Wilburn at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.
This annual conference presented by Gainesville Black Professionals is designed to encourage, support, inspire, and equip professionals to reach for leadership positions in their chosen industries. The conference speakers Dr. Kyla McMullen and Natalya Bannister were charged with challenging Racism from the concept that all 'Isms are detrimental to the individual on the receiving end of the discrimination.
This was my first time attending the conference and being able to hear from these phenomenal speakers. Virginia Grant and her Gainesville Black Professionals team did an amazing job putting this conference together!

The real message of Lucy vs Buddy is that worshipping a divinity is about following the values that the god puts forth, not about preaching or praying or evangelizing.
When Buddy was offered to die a Helio worshipper or live with a different god, he chose to abandon the faith he claimed such devotion to. When Lucy was offered the same thing, she looked to her values as they related to her religion and decided that she would not add to the coldness of the world. Lucy, even in death, remains a light in the dark, the warm memory in the coldness of the ratgrinders. That’s true devotion. That’s the point of religion.

Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. is rightly one of the most famous faces of the Civil Rights Movement:
And there are two faces of Doctor King. One is the face beloved by the sanitized white version that makes him a Jesus figure martyred and his movement sanitized into something it never was. The other was the complex exemplar of the role of the Black Church in an age where the Black Church was still one of the main centers of the most ambitious and skillful people in Black culture. His social vision was far more breathtakingly radical than given credit for, it made full use of the new media of the time of television. It deliberately risked people's lives and limbs in the most literal sense, and it did so counting on precisely what did happen.....most of the time.
There were two cities where the local authorities were no less repressive than elsewhere who were smart enough to see this and refused to play their assigned roles and they were the two cities where he failed. Both of them, incidentally, were in the North. It is impossible to understand MLK's brand of non-violent radicalism without the reminder that he was very much a Christian pastor who truly believed in the merits of 'turning the other cheek', to the point of so many of his speeches sharing a motif derived from the words of the Prophet Amos.
"And justice shall roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream."
Like many Black preachers his Bible was heavily reliant on both Jewish motifs and the Gospels and somewhat less on the words of the Apostle Paul whom white Christianity tends to favor in its own selective takes. His very religiosity led John Lewis and his SNCC to give him the somewhat less than complimentary nickname of "The Lord". Like Malcolm X he was murdered in the course of his activism and the murders mean both attained a kind of saintly aura, where the surviving movement leaders like John Lewis, James Farmer, A. Philip Randolph, and Jesse Jackson have had somewhat more checkered aspects or had this side of their lives papered over in different ways.
