DIIV (Brooklyn, New York) has a new album coming out in late May. "Brown Paper Bag" is the only song currently available. It reminds me of the underrated Erik Blood.

Without a doubt DIIV get filed under shoegaze. But there is definitely the melodic sensibilities of Deerhunter. I'd also like to redirect everyone to Launder - an LA based project that enlisted the help of DIIV's Zachary Cole Smith.

"Frog In Boiling Water" will be released via Fantasy Records. Their website still has a signed copy of the LP for sale.

As a current college student I refuse to believe Danny as Ghost King doesn’t answer summons. As soon as people start summoning him he starts demanding home cooked meals and fat wads of unmarked cash.

That they started off summoning him with the blood of virgins was a bit distasteful, but once he told them to knock it off (threatened to take whatever harm they do to innocents out on their skin, tenfold) they seemed to get the message and started giving him offering of home decor and kitchen appliances instead.

All things being equal, they don’t even ask for much in return. For most of them, just the confirmation that he exists and is “”watching out“” for them is enough. Although lately he’s started giving his cultists random junk (a nice rock he found, a handful of marbles, a piece of scrap metal from his parents lab) and telling them they’re sacred artifacts of great power, as a joke.

Not sure what took me so long to find Launder (Los Angeles, California). This album was initially released in 2018 and is mainly the brainchild of John Cudlip. He enlisted the help of Zachary Cole Smith of DIIV and French singer Soko. I'm not really sure how Cudlip swung such impressive guest coups.

This 5-song EP unfolds amidst a shoegaze sound - sometimes this is more pronounced (the final song "Follow Me Down"). But mostly, this has the undeniable feel of Deerhunter, Lotus Plaza, Erik Blood, and DIIV. When Launder are in full shoegaze mode they remind me a bit of Pia Fraus.

Launder released a full length "Happening" in 2019 with both Smith and Soko continuing to lend their skills. "Pink Cloud" was released on Day Wave and "Happening" on Ghostly International.

I got asked the other day if my job was a front for money laundering. It was a really fun young couple and it an absolutely blindsided me. So instead of my polite retail laugh they got an insane bray of astonished real laughter which utterly delighted them.

“Have you never heard that before?!”

I wheezed for a minute before gasping, “No! Why would I have???”

“Well because these stores are always so quiet but there’s a million of them!”

My coworker popped his head over the desk and said, “I get asked like once a week about it.”

That sent me laughing even harder until I finally got myself calmed down enough to say, “I hope it feels good that you got to be my first.”

From their wide mischievous grins, it did.
