Book Club
This month in the Adult Fandom Project we’re reading:
The Sunbearer Trials by Aidan Thomas,
Nominated and voted for by members of the Reading Team on the TAFP server.
This book from Aiden Thomas follows Teo, the 17 year old son of Quetzal, goddess of birds, who is selected for the Sunbearer Trials- the winner of which carries light and life to all the temples of Reino del Sol. The loser however, has the great honour of being sacrificed to Sol, which will fuel the Sun Stones and protect the people of Reino del Sol for the next ten years. Typically, those chosen are of a certain status. This year, Sol selects two of ten who are not, Teo included. We see Teo go through the five trials against opponents more powerful, better trained, and groomed for the fame and glory that come with it.
🏳️‍⚧️ A trans main character in a queer-normative world?? Yes please. ☀️ Latinx culture? Mythology? More, gimme! ✊🏾Resilience in the face of adversity? Count me in! 💪🏾Rooting for an underdog? So here for it.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia is one of the best to ever do it right now, and her interpretation of the Island of Doctor Moreau is so lush and gorgeous you can feel it.

I'm thinking of making (yet another) sideblog, or even a new main blog, for book-related shit. This is technically supposed to be my book blog but I end up posting everything that doesn't fit into other sideblogs, and I'd love to interact more with whatever kind of book community still exists on tumblr. It's been like six years since I read an entire (new) book, and I want to share with others!
If anyone here is still in booklr/generally has a book blog, what are your thoughts? Also, please share with me your book/writing blog so I can check it out! :D
PS. I'm tagging a few of my favorite genres so that I can hopefully find people who read/write for them, but I'm open to just about any genre. I'd also love to find more readers/writers of color.

Tumblr media
Release date: 15 October 2024
Genre: young adult contemporary fantasy with horror elements

Necromancy
Ex-friends to lovers

Synopsis
The teen son of the local mortician accidentally reanimates the dead body of the boy he had more than friendly feelings for, but can he keep him alive for good before their time runs out?
When you grow up in a funeral home, death is just another part of life. But for sixteen-year-old Jaxon Santiago-Noble, it’s also part of his family’s legacy. Most dead bodies in the town of Jacob’s Barrow wind up at Jaxon’s house; his mom is the local mortician, after all. He doesn’t usually pay them much mind, but when Christian Reyes is brought in after a car accident, Jaxon’s world is turned upside down.
There are a lot of things Jaxon wishes he could have said to his once best friend and first crush. When he accidentally resurrects Christian, Jaxon might finally have that chance. But the more he learns about his newfound necromancy, the more he grasps that Christian’s running on borrowed time—and it's almost out.
As he navigates dark, mysterious magics and family secrets, Jaxon realizes that stepping into an inherited power may also mean opening up old family wounds if he wants to keep the boy he may be falling for alive for good.

Review
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC!
This book is the perfect Halloween read!
While this book is definitely not a horror novel, there were plenty of spooky moments and horror references that feels just in time for Halloween season. I hadn't expected that based on the cover, so it was a pleasant surprise!
The characters read as realistically teenager-y to me. Jaxon is moody and anxious and stubborn (same, dude) while Christian is upbeat and cheerful but is also putting up a front to hide his fears. Also, I really appreciate that Christian is a glasses-wearing jock.
There were certain conflicts that I feel got brushed off/didn't get resolved fully, but for the most part, everything gets resolved pretty well.
I feel that the necromancy aspect isn't fully fleshed out, but as Jaxon is new to this/still figuring things out, I think that's fine.
Overall, a pretty solid YA fantasy, I will definitely be looking forward to see what the author writes next!
P. S. I love Grimalkin the cat so much 😭😭😭

Cemetery Boys
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yadriel’s family struggles to accept his gender and he becomes determined to prove to them that he is a real brujo. In his attempt to perform the ritual he successfully summons a spirit, however it’s not the spirit of his murdered cousin, but the resident bad boy from school, Julian Diaz. Julian insists he has unfinished business and Yadriel agrees to help him so that he can set his spirit free. The longer they spend together though, the more Yadriel doesn’t want Julian to leave.
At first I almost DNF this book, I don’t know if it was the writing style or the narrator but I just wasn’t digging it. But, I’m a sucker for a queer love story, so I stuck it out and I am so glad I did! I loved watching Yadriel come alive in a way, and his and Julian’s friendship bloomed into something beautiful. I knew a shoe was going to drop and when it did I was absolutely hooked.

I see most actions, behaviors, and beliefs as consequences of experiences. Therefore, to draw a character without consideration for their history feels like an incomplete rendering. In public health, knowing the why helps to determine what sort of intervention one needs. Similarly, in fiction, I’ve found that a character drawn without empathy isn’t fully drawn. It’s not about excusing misdeeds or atrocities; it’s about giving context and having the reader come to their own conclusion.
