Kerala Nurse Sentenced to Death in Yemen: India Extends Assistance  

In a deeply concerning development, Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala, has been sentenced to death in Yemen for the murder of a Yemeni national. Priya, who has been in a Yemeni jail since 2017, was found guilty of killing Talal Abdo Mahdi, a local man, after a dispute over her passport. The Yemeni President, Rashad al-Alimi, recently approved her death sentence, and the execution is expected to take place within a month. 

Priya, a trained nurse, had been working in Yemen for several years. The incident occurred in 2017 when Priya attempted to retrieve her passport, which Mahdi had seized. She allegedly injected him with a sedative to temporarily incapacitate him, but the dose turned out to be fatal, leading to Mahdi’s death from an overdose. 

In 2018, Priya was sentenced to death by a Yemeni court, and her appeal to the Yemeni Supreme Court in 2023 was rejected. Now, her fate rests on the possibility of securing forgiveness from Mahdi’s family and tribal leaders. Under Yemeni law, this could potentially lead to a commutation of her sentence, but the negotiations have faced several hurdles. 

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has expressed deep concern over the situation. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal assured the public that the government is providing all possible assistance to Priya and her family. “We are aware of the sentencing of Ms. Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter,” Jaiswal said. 

Priya’s family, particularly her mother, Prema Kumari, has been tirelessly working to save her life. Kumari traveled to Yemen last year to negotiate the traditional blood money with Mahdi’s family, a practice that could lead to a reduction in the sentence. However, negotiations have been delayed due to disagreements over legal fees and concerns about transparency in the fundraising efforts. 

Priya, who moved to Yemen in 2011, had formed a partnership with Mahdi to set up a clinic in Sana’a. She claimed that Mahdi had been harassing her for years, even forging documents to falsely claim they were married. Priya’s legal team argues that she had been subjected to years of abuse and extortion by Mahdi, and the fatal incident was a desperate attempt to escape his control. 

As the clock ticks down, Priya’s family and the Indian government continue to fight for her life, hoping for a last-minute reprieve. The case has sparked widespread attention, highlighting the complexities of legal systems in foreign countries and the importance of international diplomatic efforts in securing justice for citizens abroad.
