Heading to the Lakes International Comic Art Festival 2019, the event the culmination a year of publicity work for me, and others, and endless hours of hard work and organisation by the dedicated team based largely in Kendal, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of trepidation.
Not because we weren’t prepared in any way, or that…

Northlight Theatre continues free Interplay series of new play readings with A Distinct Society Written and directed by Kareem Fahmy Sunday, May 16-20, 2021 Northlight Theatre, under the direction of Artistic Director BJ Jones and Executive Director Timothy J. Evans, continues to engage audiences with its commitment to developing new work with free Interplay readings. The cast of A Distinct Society includes Barzin Akhavan, Declan Desmond, Marika Engelhardt, Susaan Jamshidi, and Kevin Minor. The dramaturg is Leean Kim Torske. When an Iranian family, separated from one another by the "Muslim ban," use the library as a meeting place, the head librarian, a U.S. border patrol officer, and a local teenager have to choose between breaking the law and saving themselves. The play is set in the main reading room of the Haskell Free Library & Opera House, located on the border between Derby Line, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec. While the library and the circumstances around it are real, the characters and events in this play are entirely fictional. A Reuter’s feature about the library is available here. The reading is part of Northlight’s Interplay New Play Development program, providing customized support for new work in the critical stages of early play development. The premieres will be followed by a live Q&A with the director and playwright. Recordings of each play will be available for 96 hours following the premiere. Interplay events are FREE with a suggested donation, but registration is required to receive a viewing link. The reading premieres Sunday, May 16, 2021 at 6:30pm with a live post-show discussion, streaming through May 20, 2021. ABOUT INTERPLAY Since its inception in 2006, Northlight’s Interplay Program has invested in provocative new works by American and international playwrights, providing customized support in the critical stages of early play development. Through Interplay, Northlight seeks to serve the specific needs of the play and can provide playwright commissions, workshops with actors, and private or public readings. The public reading series is an instrumental part of the Interplay program, providing audiences the opportunity to participate in a part of the evolutionary process from initial idea to full theatrical production, including first-hand insight from the playwright. Also through the reading series, the playwright has the opportunity to hear audience response that is integral to shaping the play for full production. As of 2020, Interplay has provided support for 40 new plays, 33 of which have gone on to full productions – some at Northlight and others around the country, including the Goodman Theatre, the Humana Festival, TheatreWorks, and off-Broadway. Four plays have continued on to acclaim at Ireland’s famed Galway International Arts Festival. That staggering success rate has established Interplay as a valuable incubator for new work in the American theatre, and has helped cement Northlight’s national reputation as an important contributor to the American theatrical canon. Support for new play development and this reading, available at no cost to general and student audiences, comes from The Ralla Klepak Foundation for Education in the Performing Arts; The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation; ComEd, An Exelon Company; BMO Harris Bank; The Sullivan Family Foundation; Illinois Arts Council, a state agency; The Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation; the John R. Halligan Fund; the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation; and Evanston Community Foundation. Northlight Theatre aspires to promote change of perspective and encourage compassion by exploring the depth of our humanity across a bold spectrum of theatrical experiences, reflecting our community to the world and the world to our community. Founded in 1974, the organization has mounted over 220 productions, including more than 40 world premieres. Northlight has earned 208 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations and 36 Awards, as well as ten Edgerton Foundation for New Play Awards. As one of the area’s premier theatre companies, Northlight is a regional magnet for critical and professional acclaim, as well as talent of the highest quality. At North Country School, the concepts of community and sustainability are woven into the fabric of our everyday lives. We honor these values in many ways, but they are particularly evident at our annual chicken harvest.
Chicken harvest is a day filled with reverence and respect when we come together to harvest the birds that our students and Camp Treetops campers raised from chicks and cared for while they provided us with thousands of eggs. The meat from those birds will be served in our dining room. Chicken harvest is a “challenge by choice” opportunity, in which students are involved to whatever extent they feel able. The students who choose not to participate in the harvest are invited to an alternate vegetable harvest. Students who do choose to participate in the chicken harvest learn the steps that bring humanely-raised meat to our plates. It is a powerful and difficult day, one that teaches students and teachers important lessons about support, respect, and our connection to the food that sustains us.
To view more photos from this year’s chicken harvest, see this week’s Farm and Garden section at the bottom of this post.
ACADEMICS
In our 6th grade social studies class, students have spent the first few weeks of fall term discussing identity and community. This week’s lessons have centered around how others view their identity. After hearing some poetry by American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, the class designed masks that reflect aspects of their identity that they want others to see. The lesson, created by educational organization Facing History, helps students use a creative visual medium to reflect their feelings on their own projected image, and to determine how they might want that image to stay the same or change as they continue to learn and grow.
In 9th grade English class students have spent the past week creating papers, comics, or scripted dialogues demonstrating how common fallacies (logical errors in argumentation) and cognitive biases (poor decision-making caused by the brain taking shortcuts) come up in everyday life. This week the class gave presentations to our younger students, explaining why these fallacies and cognitive biases cause problems when arguing a point or making a smart decision. Student Emily gave a presentation on the overconfidence bias using Cookie Monster as an example, while student Julia created original artwork that explained the concept of loaded questions.
ARTS
At North Country School, students are given the opportunity to participate in the visual and performing arts in many ways. Each week in our music program, teacher Joey Izzo leads our youngest students through a singalong, during which they work on vocal exercises and sing a variety of classic and contemporary songs. Our older students are also invited to sing and play instruments, either in private lessons or in collaboration with one another. In band class, students including Jenny, Steven, Josie, Duke, and Olivia have been practicing playing together and hope to perform for their peers later in the term.
In the 2D art studio the students in Community Art class are continuing their work on their Mother Earth Project parachute. The group, including students Sonya, Summer, and JT, took advantage of the beautiful fall weather to work outside while they added a rainbow of color to their vibrant design.
OUTDOORS
This past weekend saw two of our residential houses, Bramwell and Algonquin, participating in overnight camping trips. The students and houseparents in Algonquin House spent their overnight trip paddling in the nearby St. Regis Canoe Area, where they camped and had a cookout by the campfire. The students and houseparents in Bramwell House traveled to nearby Crown Point, New York, where they camped at the state park and explored the fort. The group also visited the historic site’s museum, where they learned about the history of the Lake Champlain region and saw a dugout canoe that was carved in the 1600s.
This past Saturday teacher Noni and farm intern Brianna took a group of students to another nearby historic fort, Fort Ticonderoga, for their annual Heritage, Harvest, and Horse Festival. The group, which included students Tiri, Azalech, and Paula, viewed horse demonstrations and reenactments and explored the fort’s beautiful historic gardens.
FARM AND GARDEN
Fall at North Country School brings with it the need to harvest many of the foods grown on our farm. Chicken harvest is a day of mixed emotions for every member of our community—a day when we come together with kindness, caring, and patience, as we process the many chickens and turkeys that will help feed us through the coming year.
The morning began with barn manager Erica gathering students and teachers together to discuss how the day would look. She outlined what everyone could expect to see and experience in the hours ahead, and made sure that students knew that they would be able to choose their level of participation. She also explained that each station would have several adults there to support and work alongside the students.
Many of our older students, including Jessica, Bladen, Sky, Julia, and Tsinat chose to take birds through the entire process, and adults Selden and Shannon waited at Dexter Pasture to carefully hand over chickens to be carried up the hill. Further along in the process, adults including Sierra and Jess talked students through the scalding process and explained how to remove feathers. At the next station, teachers Colin, Gavi, and Ted led 9th graders through a biology lesson in which the class learned about internal anatomy as they helped clean and prepare the birds. The final station at chicken harvest involves weighing and bagging birds, and our younger children often help at this point in the process, putting numbers on log sheets and sending the meat to our freezers for use throughout the year.
The group of students who chose not to participate in the chicken harvest also worked hard throughout the morning, harvesting leeks and moving the firewood that will be used to heat our residential spaces throughout the winter.
For some NCS teachers and students, this was their first time at an event like chicken harvest, and the day brought out many thoughts and feelings that were shared in conversations that followed. For others, like teachers Noni and Larry, the event has been a part of their lives for many years. For all members of our community, it is a difficult and moving day that emphasizes how we come together to lend a hand, support one another, and feel connected to one another and to the animals that sustain us.
Check back next week to see what we’re up to on our mountain campus.

Meet Star Skipper, Paramount Animation’s Magical New Trademark Logo Character
September 19, 2019 8:53AM PT Studio logos are powerful signals to audiences. Multiple generations of moviegoers flipping through channels or scanning streaming titles have frozen at the sight of a desk lamp hopping across the screen, because it means a Pixar movie is about to play. Likewise, when a young boy lounging inside a crescent moon casts his fishing line into the clouds, you know DreamWorks Animation is about to deliver a family-friendly story. Paramount Animation now joins their ranks with its first-ever dedicated logo for the division, which is run by Mireille Soria. Audiences are about to meet a character who will represent the Paramount Animation brand in film, TV and marketing spots. She’s a tween named Star Skipper, and she appears in a heightened version of the iconic Paramount logo: a snowcapped mountain surrounded by a forest and a serene lake. There’s some magic built in, however: The character skips a stone across the water, and it travels through the trees, into a green valley and up the mountain before exploding in the sky. There, it metamorphoses into a star. Variety got an exclusive first look at the logo and character design, from artist Christopher Zibach — who worked on Dreamworks’ “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” as lead visual development artist and art director — creative agency ATK PLN and Reel FX Creative Studios. We also caught up with Soria, who in only two years of stewardship of the label has ramped up production and will release four films through 2021. In eight years, the division never had a logo. Why now? Jim Gianopulos’ vision for animation is huge, which is one of the reasons I’ve decided to come here. There had been some really great animation here before, but it wasn’t focused on or supported in this way. One of the goals from the very beginning was ‘Let’s do a logo.’ It took us a while, on top of our goal to make two movies a year and putting together our great team. We’ve landed on one, and I’m excited for the world to see it. You’ll recognize it as a Paramount logo, and it has its own voice, and it’s unique to the world of animation. Was it a conscious choice to make the character female? We wanted to put a character in there. We were inspired by the idea of stars and reaching for the stars. In our operation overall, the team that we’ve put together is a majority female team, so it captures the magic of what we’re going for in the division. It’s about dreaming big. When we thought about the character, we thought, why wouldn’t it be female? And we wanted a girl connected to nature, in who she is and how she looks. You have strong numbers when it comes to hiring women, and many animation shops are run by women. How far along is the whole industry in terms of achieving gender equity? It’s a challenge everyone has. Because it has not been tradition or convention, we have to find people who have the talent and ambition but need the support. Trust me, those people are out there. We learn from our mentors, including great men on our team, and I think our slate proves we have a real diversity of ideas. It’s a great time for animation. There are a lot of projects being done, and we all know each other: Melissa at Netflix, Kristine at Sony Pictures Animation] and Margie at DreamWorks Animation. How does Paramount Animation distinguish itself from its competitors? We’re not looking to have a uniform look for the movies. We think the look should be defined by story and what it demands, and the vision of the talent leading it. The unifying concept we want is that they are top quality. should also leave feeling good about themselves. Guillermo del Toro always says that animation is a medium, not a genre. We believe that too. Now that the merger with CBS is taking place, what does that mean for animation? One thing Bob Bakish has done is a breaking down of the silos so we can work together — doing “SpongeBob” with Nickelodeon is a great and obvious example . We have a project centered on “Mighty Mouse,” a hybrid we have in development, which is owned by CBS. Yes, we’d like to do more. Star Skipper will live in the logo, but will she ever break out into her own movie or series? Our hope is all of our movies will be successful. We’ll wait and see if there are any changes with her as the movies grow. It’s a fun idea.
Cannabis cultivation in the Emerald Triangle, the area in Northern California that has long been a go-to for growers, has a starring role in a new documentary series called “The Great Outdoor.” Funded by Flow Kana, one of the state’s leading cannabis flower brands, filmed by David Zlutnick, and executive-produced by Flow Kana co-founder Flavia
The upbeat state of Arab cinema will be on the screen and in the balmy air at Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival (Sept. 19-27), which is steadily gaining traction in its stated ambition to become a key platform and solid driver for Middle-East producers. “This year was one the best for Arab cinema,” says Intishal

Jay Baruchel has played a role for every consumer age bracket: The Canadian actor’s lengthy resume includes everything, from voicing an awkward teen in Dreamworks’ hit animated franchise “How to Train Your Dragon” to playing a 20-something looking for love with surreal consequences in “Man Seeking Woman” to, well, himself in “This Is the End”

RECAP: Enchufate on Vocalo 91.1FM, Friday, June 7
Here’s all the information I shared this morning during our Enchufate segment on 91.1FM #TheMorningAmp powered by @vocalomusic GOOD MORNING! Happy Friday and happy weekend! Happy PRINCE Day and Happy Doughnut Day!
LatiNxt
LatiNxt is a music and art festival taking place at Navy Pier next Friday and Saturday, June 14 & 15 and like last year there are three stages of music, the beer garden at the back of the pier, another one by the Ferris Wheel and the one at the entrance facing the lake. Artists this year are from Peru, Argentina, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ecuador and all over the US and include plenty of local talent. The full lineup and schedule can be found here on Enchufate as well as FutureRootz.com or the Navy Pier page as well. I want to mention some of the other things going on before and in between performances.
On Saturday we have a full Artisans Market going on with everything from handmade jewelry and fashion to traditional art items from Chicago and Latin America. In addition there are two new aspects this year...
Latinx Zine Expo - this is a new part of this year's programming. It will be an area dedicated to the art of zines and its artists. It's curated by Scholar Comics creator, the superb Vicko Alvarez. That will be part of the Artisan Market on Saturday.
Another new aspect is the Artist Panels. We have three and they take place from 1-4PM in the new Welcome Center.
Topics include:
----> Keeping it local: Thriving in today’s Chicago Latin Music Scene/Community featuring - Bumbac Joe, Fausto Future Rootz, Jessica Rodriguez Braided Janes - Local ins and outs about thriving in Chicago, labels, venues, media outlets.
----> The Latin Music Renaissance: How Latinx Artists Are Redefining the Music Industry and Breaking Borders / Confirmed Panelists: Jaime Garza, Alex E. Chavez, Luna AfroRazones Moderator: Catalina Maria Johnson - How the Latinx community internationally is shaping the creative industries and demolishing traditional borders. How has this shaped record labels, the Latin explosion and what is next.
----> When Music is Gendered: Women and Non-Binary Artists Speak /// Confirmed Panelists: Caro Arroba, Chocolate Remix Moderator: Vicko Alvarez - Challenges and building more femme DJs & producers in the Latinx scene.
It's exciting and I love that LatiNxt is dedicating time not only to the performances but also to what else is going on with Latin music and its creators.

NEW MUSIC
It's another powerhouse compilation album that's coming out of Galletas Calientes Records from Colombia. This one is the London Luanda Remix Series by The Busy Twist.
THIS INVOLVES FOUR PARTS -
1. These are tracks released on Analog Africa which was founded by Samy Ben Redjeb from Tunisia who found African tribal music during his vinyl digs and decided to put out compilations based on these.
2. The second part involves THE BUSY TWIST who are a producer duo from London. Their goal is to "cross sound boundaries and join the dots between Afro House, Kuduro, Latin and UK Bass."
3. The third part is obviously all the artists featured on this album, some whose music was never released and others were only released on vinyl. Today’s featured track is from artist Zé Da Lua and his song Ulungu Wami. (Released in 1973!!!)
4. And then... Galletas Calientes Records is the final portion of this, releasing the album as a compilation of some of this music, which was remixed by The Busy Twist.
The album is a tribute and refix of tribal and traditional African/Colombian music reworked and featuring collabs with bands/singers like Systema Solar, Ghetto Kumbe, Nidia Gongora and Palenque Records.
The album was released this week and you can find it on Bandcamp via Galletas Calientes Records.
Have a great weekend and remember - Enchufate!

CEO of Mirmont Pictures, Sohrab Mirmont Asked to Speak at FanX
Award-winning Director and Producer Sohrab Mirmont of Mirmont Pictures is making a repeat appearance at the 2019 FanX in Salt Lake City, Utah.
SALT LAKE CITY, UT August 31, 2019
The celebrated Mirmont Pictures CEO, Sohrab Mirmont will be appearing at the 2019 FanX taking place September 5-7 at the Salt Palace.
Mirmont has formerly spoken on FanX panels such as, "Super Micro-Budget Filmmaking," and "You don't need permission: Getting your independent film made," in January of 2015.
He also spoke at the much larger Comic-Con in September of 2015, following the release of his acclaimed feature film The Freemason starring Comic-Con alumni Sean Astin.
Sohrab joins the 2019 FanX convention again as a panelist, this time speaking on the "Hallmark Christmas Movies" panel on Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 10am-11am.
Mirmont will also sit on the, "How to build a Superhero physique" on Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 12pm-1pm.
Sohrab admittedly says that he himself does not have a superhero physique (yet), but is qualified to speak on the panel as he lost more than 70 pounds at age 21, by eliminating negative eating habits and implementing major lifestyle changes, which he says is crucial when it comes to changing the way you look and feel. According to Sohrab, "I enrolled in martial arts when I was a kid. I was in the Dojo 4-5 hours a day for over a year, but I never lost a pound. After each session, I would drink a big Gatorade to stay hydrated... which I eventually discovered has as much sugar as a Coke. It wasn't until later that I realized no matter how much exercise you do, it doesn't matter if you're still eating garbage."
Creative Director of Mirmont Pictures, Brianna Davis is a life-long vegetarian turned mostly vegan. She says, "On Mirmont Pictures sets, we view food as fuel. Our craft services and catering follow our health views, and as a result, we are proud to have very focused and efficient sets. Sohrab and I have worked on other company's sets where junk food and drinks are on tap at crafty, and animal-based catering is served for meals, and we have both noticed the downward spiral they cause in everyone's energy and focus. In fact, on one set, the director was rendered absolutely worthless after a BBQ lunch, that the DP had to step in and finish the shoot. We have been inspired by James Cameron's sets where a vegan meal is provided, and his viewpoint is essentially, "This food is free and you can eat it, or you can go get whatever food you want"; he won't cave in his health values to cater to what people want. Alexander Hamilton said, "If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything". Good health is what we choose to stand for as a company, and as people. Sohrab is the ideal panelist on the topic of building a physique, because he has transformed his body and mind, and is a huge inspiration to many!"
Sohrab Mirmont has won multiple awards at Comic-Con including Best Director, Best Editor, and Best Cinematography. He has won 18+ awards at other festivals, and has been nominated for 25+ awards. His first win was in 2005, when his short film, The Beautiful Wind won the Audience Choice award at the New York International Film Festival. Mirmont is currently working on two feature films, and wrapping up a humanitarian project that will air next month.
