19th January 2024: Lakeside Country Park
Flora and fauna photos taken in this set are of; Pochards and Tufted Ducks including together in shots, Redwing and beautiful rose hips. It was an honour to see four male Pochards with their sumptuous sunset orange heads, neat and complex grey backs and sides and suit smart black fronts; one of my favourite ducks and birds and it's the first time I've ever seen them at Lakeside. With me really enjoying spotting the odd rarer duck for the site since my regular walks here began when working from home did in 2020 Pochard was my next target as I felt it was realistic one may drop in and someone we know has seen one here before and it is in colder snaps when these more unusual ducks to the usual Mallard and Tufted Duck tend to turn up in winter. It was thrilling to spend a few moments watching these stunning birds alongside Tufted Ducks and others in one of the few bits of unfrozen water across the whole site today in the north west corner of Concorde lake. Nearly a week on from a species I adore Black Redstart being a from home tick this is a very welcome and much fondly imagined patch tick. It was great to see the Tufted Ducks closely and a fair few Redwings on the walk.
Exciting Green Woodpecker and Wren views hearing the former too, Blue Tit, Blackbird, Feral Pigeons seen nicely flying over, Woodpigeons looking nice in the northern fenced off area and Magpie were good to see on the walk too. I also got an epic view of another of my favourite birds the Great Crested Grebe in the bit of water and enjoyed Moorhen as well as Coot and Mallard interestingly seen stood on the ice. At home House Sparrow and Collared Dove lit up by the winter afternoon sun were highlights today with House Sparrow heard at Lakeside too. Mistletoe and ash helicopters were good to see at Lakeside too.

Day 11 – Vaudrueil-Dorion to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu – 109 km
Trail: Mostly flat, 101 km paved, 8 km unpaved, A
A long day. There were no rooms in Chambly so I had to ride an additional 18 km to St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Only 15 minutes of rain.
Last night I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It was clean, comfortable, and just off the trail. The bed and shower were excellent. Breakfast was included. Recommended.

Today’s ride was along smooth paved bike paths, allowing me to ride at a higher speed. I followed the St. Lawrence River to Lachine and it was incredibly beautiful. The shoreline, quaint villages, and homes were impeccably manicured.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/24a7fc43c2419a46a8d55d4ec8ea9a4f/3a353d4fdc312ae6-07/s540x810/79e3ea2de8e08b01a9525d68112345415e5bf827.jpg)
It was Saturday morning and most towns and cities had farmers markets or art shows.
There were bikes everywhere. I didn't go one minute without passing a bike. Montrealers surely love biking.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b7c29ed25ec5b170038c51dca307749a/3a353d4fdc312ae6-9f/s540x810/40a3cd0a17a53972c3daf5d7aa446be9325285a5.jpg)
In Lachine, the sun came out and so did the boats. Dragon boat racers were enjoying the day. i find that the world is a much happier, more colorful place.

In these Montreal apartments no one unit can see into another. Total privacy. Also used for the 1976 Olympics.
Around Montreal trails were not well marked. Constant use of the AllTrails app and Google Maps was a necessity.
While I was crossing the Concord Bridge, from Montreal to the south shore, I thought to myself that it would be cool to see some Formula 1 racing. I need to be careful what I wish for. As I got to the end of the bridge, a security guard stopped me and told me that I couldn't proceed and that I had to go back because of Formula 1 preparations. This just sucked. I had to double back and take the Samuel de Champlain Bridge, adding about 1 hour and a half to my day.

The TCT was marked with a limited number of "Sentier Transcanadien" signs. Signs using local names were much more prominent. I followed Route Verte 5 and then Route Verte 1 to Chambly. At Chambly I took the Piste du Canal Chambly.

Blanche de Chambly on the lake in Chambly. I (my butt) needed a short break. On the way to Chambly time flew by. The ride was essentially through Montreal suburbs, with homes to look at and plenty of bikers.

Snow in Chambly?

Hot air balloons took off from the parking lot of my hotel.

The Best Locations for a Paris Picnic
The city of Paris offers a multitude of picnic spots, each with its own unique atmosphere and charm. Whether you prefer a vibrant park setting or a more intimate riverside spot, Paris has something for everyone.
1. Champ de Mars
The Champ de Mars park, located at the base of the Eiffel Tower, is perhaps the most iconic picnic spot in Paris. With the tower as your backdrop, you can enjoy your Paris picnic while gazing at one of the most famous landmarks in the world. It’s an ideal spot for couples, families, and groups of friends who want to immerse themselves in the city's romantic energy.
2. Jardin des Tuileries
For those looking to picnic in a more formal setting, Jardin des Tuileries offers a blend of history and elegance. Situated between the Louvre and Place de la Concorde, this garden provides a serene environment with beautifully manicured lawns, statues, and fountains. It’s perfect for those who want a peaceful and refined Paris picnic experience.
3. Parc des Buttes-Chaumont
If you're after a more hidden gem, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont is an excellent choice. This hilly park, complete with waterfalls, caves, and a stunning lake, offers a more natural setting. It’s an ideal location for families or anyone seeking a quiet escape from the bustling city center.
4. Banks of the Seine
For a truly Parisian experience, you can have your Paris picnic along the banks of the Seine. Whether you choose a spot near Île de la Cité or further east by Île Saint-Louis, the riverside views offer an unmatched charm, especially during sunset. It’s perfect for couples seeking a romantic evening.
What to Pack for a Paris Picnic
No Paris picnic is complete without a selection of delicious, fresh French foods. Here are some must-have items to bring along:
1. Baguette
A freshly baked baguette is the cornerstone of any Paris picnic. Head to a local boulangerie to pick up this quintessential French bread. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, it’s perfect for pairing with cheeses and spreads.
2. Cheese
France is famous for its cheese, and a Paris picnic is a great opportunity to sample some of the best varieties. Consider packing a selection of soft and hard cheeses, such as brie, camembert, and comté.
3. Charcuterie
A Paris picnic wouldn’t be complete without charcuterie. Thinly sliced prosciutto, saucisson, and pâté are great choices that pair wonderfully with bread and cheese.
4. Fresh Fruits
Seasonal fruits like strawberries, grapes, and cherries are ideal for adding a refreshing touch to your Paris picnic. Not only do they provide a burst of color, but they’re also a light and healthy complement to the rich cheeses and meats.
5. Wine
A bottle of French wine can elevate your Paris picnic to new heights. Opt for a crisp white or a light red, such as a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir, depending on your preference.
6. Pastries
Finish off your picnic with some sweet French pastries. Croissants, pain au chocolat, or macarons make for a delightful dessert.
Tips for a Perfect Paris Picnic
Planning a Paris picnic can be simple and enjoyable if you keep a few important tips in mind:
1. Check the weather.
The weather can be unpredictable, so make sure to check the forecast before heading out. Pack an umbrella or blanket in case of sudden rain.
2. Arrive Early
Popular picnic spots like Champ de Mars can fill up quickly, especially during the weekend. Arrive early to secure a good spot with a view.
3. Pack a blanket.
A large, comfortable blanket is essential for lounging in the grass. Choose one that’s waterproof on one side to protect against damp ground.
4. Don’t forget the essentials.
Bring along essentials like cutlery, napkins, and reusable cups. Also, a small trash bag is helpful for cleaning up afterward to keep Paris as beautiful as you found it.
5. Enjoy the Moment
A Paris picnic is all about relaxation and enjoying the moment. Take your time, savor each bite, and soak in the stunning surroundings.

20th November 2023: Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1. A nice gang of Collared Doves out the back this morning. 2 and 10. Autumnal colours afar out the back and on the tree nearby with a fair few yellow leaves hanging on still. 3, 4 and 5. Beautiful views at Lakeside with real mature autumn colour in the landscape now which I was thrilled to be immersed in. 6, 7 and 8. Some photos of the two Goosanders which it was amazing to see again, they'd relocated to beach lake now. It was a joy to observe them for a little bit once more with their dashing red heads and neat appearance. These are such wonderful birds to have so close to home and be able to see on my lunch break and I'm loving seeing them. 9. More duck delight, one of my first two Tufted Ducks of the winter seen here, males on Concorde lake.
I saw a great list of birds at Lakeside at lunch time also including a Kestrel flying over the southern fenced off area with Magpies which was a thrilling moment. A charm of Goldfinches flying over gave me a warm feeling and it was a delight to see a Mistle Thrush again what a key bird for me at Lakeside this year. A Kingfisher dashing over beach lake, Robin, Moorhens including once entertainingly seen on a buoy on beach lake again, Great Crested Grebes and a couple of wagtails flying over the bowl area one definitely a Grey Wagtail with its sweet yellow chest and the other I couldn't quite get a clear enough view of logically another grey but possibly a Pied Wagtail with it as I'd seen one of each together in the opposite corner of the park a few weeks back were other highlights. The bowl in the eastern meadows a quirky place to see a grey. It was good to see Goldfinch and Magpie at home today too. Daisy, wild carrot still going along the northern path, rose hips, hawthorn berries and holly berries were plant highlights at lunch time.

Historic Heat Wave Roasts Northeast: 99 Million Americans Under Heat Alerts
Many communities haven't experienced heat like this in years. Residents are trying to stay cool and safe to prevent heat-related health issues such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion, which can be fatal.
Cooling centers, pools, and splash pads are open across the Northeast as the first significant heat wave of the summer drives temperatures into the mid-to-upper 90s. The brutal, record-breaking, and potentially dangerous conditions are expected to persist through the weekend.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in South Dakota
A massive ridge of high pressure parked over the eastern U.S. is causing the sweltering temperatures. In major cities like Chicago, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Boston, temperatures will reach the 90s, but high humidity will push feels-like temperatures above 100 degrees.
THIS PART OF THE US IS ABOUT TO ENDURE HEAT IT HAS NEVER FELT BEFORE
Many communities haven’t seen heat like this in years, prompting officials to open cooling centers and community pools to help residents stay cool and avoid heat-related health issues such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion, which can be deadly. Over 200 cities are expected to set new record high temperatures.
Boston University, for example, has opened cooling stations for students, available from 7 a.m. to midnight every day through Friday.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu declared a heat emergency, which will remain in effect through at least Thursday, with many facilities opened for residents to cool off.
However, some cooling centers remained closed on Wednesday for Juneteenth.
Cooling centers have been opened in Connecticut, and Governor Ned Lamont has activated the state's Extreme Hot Weather Protocol.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams also announced the opening of cooling centers across the city, while pools in Philadelphia have been opened to help residents beat the heat.
95 Million Included in Heat Alerts from Ohio Valley to New England
Heat alerts stretch across the eastern half of the U.S., from the Great Lakes region and Ohio Valley into the Northeast and New England.
See more:

A majority of the population is under a Heat Advisory, including cities like Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati in Ohio; Buffalo and Binghamton in New York; Newark in New Jersey; Providence in Rhode Island; and Boston.
The Heat Advisories also extend into northern New England, covering all of Vermont, western New Hampshire, and parts of Maine.
Excessive Heat Warnings have been issued for Pittsburgh and Fort Wayne in Indiana, as well as in places that have never seen such warnings before.
The National Weather Service office in Caribou, Maine, issued its inaugural Excessive Heat Warning as feels-like temperatures approach 110 degrees. Other New England areas under the Excessive Heat Warning include Nashua, Manchester, and Concord in New Hampshire, and Augusta, Bangor, Rumford, and Lewiston in Maine. Currently, Portland has not been included in the Excessive Heat Warning.
Excessive Heat Watches have been issued for the Philadelphia area and for most of central and northern New Jersey.
Weather Forecast For Indiana:
Washington, D.C. is expected to reach 100 degrees this weekend as the heat continues to intensify through the workweek. Cities along the Interstate 95 corridor on the East Coast will again experience temperatures in the 90s.
However, New England will see a slight cooldown by Friday. Boston is forecasted to reach a high of 95 degrees on Thursday and 83 degrees on Friday. Temperatures will drop further on Saturday, with many locations in New England staying in the mid- to upper 70s.
Residents in Caribou will experience a more significant temperature drop. After hitting 96 degrees on Wednesday, temperatures will steadily decrease throughout the week, reaching a forecasted high of 65 degrees on Sunday.
Record-breaking heat is forecasted across several locations on Thursday, as indicated by each red marker on the map above, including cities such as Bangor and Concord in New England, and Binghamton and Scranton, Pennsylvania.
The heat is expected to reach life-threatening levels in many areas where daily records could be shattered or where there is extensive pavement. According to the National Weather Service's HeatRisk map, communities are rated at Level 3 or 4 out of 4 for impacts.
At Level 3 (code red), the heat affects individuals who are not adequately hydrated or lack access to cooling.
At Level 4 (magenta), it denotes extreme heat that is either rare or prolonged, potentially overwhelming health systems with an influx of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.
