Had her name been scribbled on the back of the albumen print, there would be at least one fact I could convey with a measure of certainty, one detail that I would not have to guess, one less obstacle in retracing the girlâs path through the streets of the city. Had the photographer or one of the young men assisting him in the studio recorded her name, I might have been able to find her in the 1900 census, or discover if she ever resided at the Shelter for Colored Orphans, or danced on the stage of the Lafayette Theatre, or if she ended up at the Magdalene House when there was nowhere else to go. Instead, I have pressed at the limits of case files and documents, speculated about what might have been, imagined the things whispered in dark bedrooms, and amplified moments of withholding, escape and possibility, moments when the vision and dreams of the wayward seemed possible.
Saidiya Hartman at Bunk (Via The New Yorker). An Unnamed Girl, a Speculative History
What a photograph reveals about the lives of young black women at the turn of the century.
I have been reading Keguro Macharia online for nearly twenty years. Since Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter I don't frequent the place much anymore. But Twitter is a still a place where I can hear from people in Africa. Today I noticed a thread by k'eguro:
âYou read Saidiya Hartman and if, like me, you are easily influenced, you aspire to write something as attentive to the richness she imagines and maps and outlines and colors.â
âWayward Lives is extraordinary. Simply extraordinary.â
And so listening to Hartman read from Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments at Youtube from a reading at Politics and Prose, and answering questions, she mentioned this photograph. She was responding to a question about her method and talking about the "fact checking" for this The New Yorker article. Hartman also mentioned a second photo--the girl peeking out the third storey window--which is linked in the excerpt at Bunk. I was happy I still had a free article left at The New Yorker to read the whole thing.

The Devonshire House Ball or the Devonshire House Fancy Dress Ball was an elaborate fancy dress ball, hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, held on 2 July 1897 at Devonshire House in Piccadilly to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. Due to the many prominent royals, aristocrats, and society figures who attended as well as the overall lavishness of the ball, it was considered the event of the 1897 London Season.
Guests in Costume Photographed by the Lafayette Studio of Bond Street, London.
Lady Randolph Churchill (1854-1921)
as Empress Theodora of Byzantium
Lady Randolph Churchill, née Jennie Jerome, mother of Winston Churchill, was reputed to be "one of the most beautiful of the many beautiful American women who have married Englishmen of rank."
By 1897 she was already a widow and it was said that she had been a mistress of Edward, Prince of Wales. Her discretion about this affair was summed up in her own memoirs: "...there may be some to whom these Reminiscences will be interesting chiefly in virtue of what is left unsaid."

Warhol, Art Law, And The Supreme Court
By Lauren Barrouquere, Â University of Louisiana at Lafayette Class of 2024
May 28, 2023
In 1981, world-renowned photographer Lynn Goldsmith was commissioned by Newsweek to take photos and at the time up-and-coming rock star. Goldsmith took several photos of Prince in concert and did a studio shoot with him, putting him in makeup and adjusting the lighting to highlight his eyes . Though Newsweek did not use the studio photos, Goldsmith kept them for future licensing.
Cut to 1984, Prince became a household name, and the magazine Vanity Fair wanted to capitalize off of this fame, so they commissioned artist Andy Warhol to create an illustration based on one of the studio photos Goldsmith took of Prince back in â81. Warhol did so, and Goldsmith was compensated with $400 and an agreement that that particular magazine issue will be the only issue in which the image was used.
There is no evidence that Warhol was aware of the agreement that the image would only be used once, and so he went on to create sixteen silk screens of Prince, all inspired by Goldsmithâs photograph. Warhol, being a famous artist, sold silk screens and reproductions of them for millions of dollars.
Prince died in 2017, causing Conde Nast, Vanity Fair's parent company, to organize a tribute to the musical artist, including the Warhol piece inspired by Goldsmithâs photograph, and did not compensate Goldsmith. After some time, Goldsmith sued the Warhol Foundation, the foundation responsible for the licensing of Warholâs works, saying that they had infringed upon her copyright and owed her thousands as compensation.

Warhol Foundationâs Loss In SCOTUS Case Rocks the Art World
By Lauren Barrouquere, Â University of Louisiana at Lafayette Class of 2024
May 25, 2023
In 1981, world-renowned photographer Lynn Goldsmith was commissioned by Newsweek to take photos and at the time up-and-coming rockstar [2]. Goldsmith took several photos of Prince in concert and did a studio shoot with him, putting him in makeup and adjusting the lighting to highlight his eyes [2]. Though Newsweek did not use the studio photos, Goldsmith kept them for future licensing [2].
Cut to 1984, Prince became a household name, and the magazine Vanity Fair wanted to capitalize off of this fame, so they commissioned artist Andy Warhol to create an illustration based on one of the studio photos Goldsmith took of Prince back in â81 [2]. Warhol did so, and Goldsmith was compensated with $400 and an agreement that that particular magazine issue will be the only issue in which the image was used [2].
There is no evidence that Warhol was aware of the agreement that the image would only be used once, and so he went on to create sixteen silk screens of Prince, all inspired by Goldsmithâs photograph [2]. Warhol, being a famous artist, sold silk screens and reproductions of them for millions of dollars [2].
Prince died in 2017, causing Conde Nast, Vanity Fair's parent company, to organize a tribute to the musical artist, including the Warhol piece inspired by Goldsmithâs photograph, and did not compensate Goldsmith [2]. After some time, Goldsmith sued the Warhol Foundation, the foundation responsible for the licensing of Warholâs works, saying that they had infringed upon her copyright and owed her thousands as compensation [2]. The Warhol Foundation responded by saying that Warholâs treatment of the photograph was âtransformativeâ due to the cropping, coloration, and changes to the angle and outline of the photo, and therefore did not cause issues with copyright law [2].
The case bounced around the court system for several years before traveling up to the United States Supreme Court [4]. As of May 18th, the Warhol Foundation has lost the case [1]. The Court, in an opinion penned by Justice Sotomayor, found that whatever âdegree of differenceâ was instilled into the work by Warhol was not transformative enough to sufficiently distinguish it from the original photograph [1]. The Court also focused heavily on fair use and found that the manner in which Warholâs portrait of Prince was being used did not fall under any fair use protections, and this was compounded by the blatantly commercial nature of the portraitâs use [1].
Notably, this case was highly controversial, having caused more than 35 amicus curiae briefs to be filed arguing for one side or the other [2]. The decision to rule on the side of Goldsmith will certainly strengthen laws in favor of original artists but may prove difficult for artists and filmmakers who derive their work from existing bodies of art [2]. What impact this ruling will have on the art world as a whole remains to be seen.

Chamâs Les MisĂ©rables, translated (part 8/10)
If you want to see a photograph of Nadarâs studio (mentioned in this issue), see this article although this is certainly an anachronism because he didnât have that studio in 1832, he established it in 1860. The song The Restless Foot is Le Pied Qui Râmue which I believe appeared in 1862 so it must have been (again, anachronistic but also) the hot song that summer and you can hear it here (along with the lyrics and some commentary in French). I donât know much about Lafayette and I just wanted to know if there was more to the reference to his horse and I found this so apparently it was so common for Lafayette to be depicted with his horse that it became a joke. Long live Cosette! In case you missed them, hereâs part 1, part 2, part 3 , part 4, part 5, part 6. and part 7. July 10, 2019
Tom followed and then immediately unfollowed a Euphoria fan account. -> IRRELEVANT.
July 14, 2019
The End
Interesting. As soon as the press tour is over, so are the random outings of Tom and Zendaya, that many mistake as âdatesâ, and which are losely based on the sightings of fans. Suddenly they no longer hang out together, post about the other, etc.
Could it be because two Spiderman movies are out and promoted at this point, the third one was not yet confirmed at the time and there was no reason for promotion any longer? đ
Screams like a friendship to me, highly exaggerated for PR reasons. As soon as no more PR was needed, they went their separate ways.

The Silk Building Penthouse, New York
The Silk Building Penthouse, New York Luxury real Estate, NY Building, American Interior Architecture Photos
The Silk Building Penthouse in New York
Feb 17, 2022
The Silk Building Penthouse, NY
The Silk Building Penthouse, NY, once Owned by Cher & Britney Spears â is now for sale on , priced at $5.5 million
Location: NYC, USA
Source: TopTenRealEstateDeals.com
The Silk Building is one of the only full-service lofts conversion buildings in Noho. Built-in 1908, the building has 55 residences and a 24-hour doorman/concierge.
A stunning quadplex penthouse apartment in one of New York Cityâs most historic residential buildings, previously a silk factory before it was repurposed to residences and then owned by a bevy of celebrity A-Listers, has just hit the market at $6.995 million.
Built in the Italian Renaissance style in 1908 and converted to apartments in the 1980s, the 12-story Silk Building is located in Manhattanâs Noho neighborhood, taking up an entire city block between Broadway and Lafayette streets.
For decades, the style-conscious have looked to Cher for her home choices in glamorous locations from New York City to California and Hawaii, her artistic vision and related upscale decorating talent rivals her singing and showmanship. Cher was the Silk Building penthouse-apartmentâs first owner when she purchased it after the buildingâs transition to residences and lived there until 1990 when she sold it to Russell Simmons for $1.6 million.
Britney Spears later bought the apartment â it was where she wrote the Grammy-winning song âToxicâ â and lived there for four years. Britney combined two units to make up the current apartment with 3,785 square feet and four bedrooms. Keith Richards also once lived in the building where he had two floors and a recording studio.
Some of the penthouseâs best features are the tall ceilings, 400-square-foot outdoor terrace, fully operational wood fireplaces, and the wet bar in the primary suite.
A fifth bedroom could be added by repurposing the rooftop den with bath that opens to the large terrace with views over Greenwich Village and the Empire State Building. The kitchen is styled up-to-the minute and bathrooms are upgraded with book-matched marble. Cher would definitely approve!
The Silk Building is located in a neighborhood developed by John Jacob Astor many decades ago that housed a large number of garment-related businesses and factories. In 1983, the Silk Buildingâs first-floor retail space was leased by Tower Records, which attracted local music fans, tourists and entertainers. The building was recently the site of a Major League Baseball store and currently a Blink Fitness center.
Noho has been home for many celebrities, including Gigi Hadid and Cynthia Nixon. Itâs not unusual to run into a plethora of other celebrities who maintain apartments in nearby neighborhoods. Neither is it unusual to see filming and photoshoots in action when out for a stroll.
The listing agent is Ian Slater with Compass located in Midtown Manhattan.

L.A. Daze
Memory Lane
I recently ran for State House Representative for Louisiana. Â I made the decision then I worked really hard on a campaign for 6 months. Â I hired a social media person and we began branding Leslie Bourque. Â It was surreal. Â We created a website and my Facebook page. Â It has been a few weeks now since the election results, which I did not win. Â Since that day I havenât revisited my website or FB page. Â Not because it pains me I lost, but because for 6 months I learned as much as I could about my city and state. Â I felt important and since it is over I sorta feel a void. Â I will eventually look back at that special time in my life. Â
I recently took down my box of old pictures. Â It was my momâs 70th birthday and my brother wanted to make a video for her. Â I saw some binders that I havenât opened in years. Â Memories from what seems like a lifetime ago, my Los Angeles days. Â A stack of headshots from when I pursued acting and modeling. Â I donât know why I havenât looked at them in so long, but I decided to grab a glass of wine and take a stroll down memory lane. Â
Before I did so, I remembered the picture below. Â I feverishly looked for it. Â It is of me in 1997 in my cherry red Nissan 240X. Â The day I bravely drove across the country on I-10. Â Stopping only once in El Paso to sleep for the night. Â I think I had my momâs car phone bag and a bunch of CDâs. Â It took me 2 days but I clearly remember driving into Los Angeles and then to my the apartment I sublet for 4 months from a stranger. Â I parked on Detroit Ave and retrieved the key from my new neighbor. Â It was an old dingy building, but the studio apartment was perfect for me. Â As I entered the key into the keyhole, I knew my life was changed forever. Â I opened the door and just took it all in. Â Me by myself a million miles from home. The apartment was full of her things. Â It was sorta a hippie/hollywood decor. Â I sat on her furniture and looked at her pots I would be cooking on. Â I saw all of her clothes hanging with empty hangers for mine. Â I laid in another persons bed and I closed my eyes hoping for the best. Â
Headshot
Luckily I had a job waiting for me when I got to Los Angeles.  I worked as a production assistant on a movie called âWild Thingsâ starring Kevin Bacon, Matt Dillon, Chevy Chase, Denis Richards and Neve Campbell.  We shot on the Sony Lot in Culver City.  It was epic to drive into this lot where so many important films were made.  My boss was named Taylor.  She was a hard one to read, but nice enough.  I was diligent and I was quiet.  It all seemed grander than life to me. One day while I was passing out papers to executives offices I entered the President of Mandalay Pictures.  I had seen him before in meetings where I was basically the gopher.  I walked into his office and he asked me to close the door and sit down.  He said âHere is your chance.  Give me a 5 minute rundown of who you are and what to you want to do?â Â
I moved to Los Angeles with expectations to learn acting. Â I didnât know if I could be an actress, but I wanted to try. Â The day I pulled into California I had never taken an acting class. Â When this man asked me to tell him about me and what I wanted to do, I almost fainted. Â I didnât have the verbiage at the time to know what to say. Â I mean I literally just got off of the boat from Lafayette, Louisiana!! Â I ended up telling him how I got to Los Angeles. Â I sheepishly said I wanted to be an actress. Â He told me I had a look and I should take some classes and then find him again and he would help me. Â I took a thousand classes and never found him again. Â
The first thing you are told to do is to get a good headshot. Â I have no idea how I found my first photographer, David LaPorte. Â Basically you interview them and try to find the right fit for you. Â It becomes an intimate process and you unveil your soul a bit. Â He made me feel the least nervous. Â I have always been photogenic, but a headshot is a whole other level. Â Basically, it is your calling card for casting directors to pick you out of millions to call in for an audition. Â You must convey with your eyes how you will tell a story. Â I spent hours with David and at the end I finally got the hang of it. Â He was patient and I was grateful. Â
Identity Change
The last name I was bestowed was always a bit tricky for me.  I donât want to say I didnât like it, but I didnât appreciate it.  You can imagine some of the jokes I got âpork a Bourqueâ etc.  When I got to L.A. people couldnât pronounce it.  They would fancy it up in a very shi shi French way.  They couldnât spell it.  I always loved my middle name for some reason.  I love that I had an accent.  I decided to drop my last name. Â
The next two pictures are with a famous photographer, Randall Slavin. Â I remember going to his house and we shot in the garage. Â He was so cool. Â Like âtoo cool for schoolâ cool. Â He was the hot headshot guy and working his way to bigger, better things. Â If you look close in my eyeballs you can see his reflection. Â I felt more comfortable, but still intimidated.
I got a commercial agent. Â Representation. Â I had a pager and was on call. Â If they called I had to run. Â I was in the best acting class. Â The one that was hard to get into. Â I was doing it. Â I didnât know how to do it, but I was navigating the unknown. Â I felt liberated and I felt like I had a path to success.Â
Finding my groove
I was working. Â I was actually making money. Â I started doing print work and commercials. Â I landed my very first national commercial-Miller High Life. Â I had confidence. Â I had a commercial agent and a talent agent. Â I had now gone through so many acting classes. Â I stayed up late studying my craft. Â I felt I made it, even though I hadnât made it exactly. Â I went back to my first photographer, David. Â I had sass now and I had a sense of who I was. Â He noticed. Â It was a totally different shoot than the first time. Â
Edging it up
Another photographer. Â This time a woman. Â She wanted me to get rid of the cute and find my sexy. Â I knew the camera at this point. Â I knew it liked me. Â I remember creating stories in my mind and really playing a character. Â
I decided I didnât hate my last name anymore. Â
I was auditioning a lot. Â I was in a play. Â I was spending a lot of money on classes. Â I was making a lot of money as a fitness/pilates trainer. Â I was losing the excitement of the pursuit. Â I loved studying the craft, but the hustle was getting to me. Â
The End
A friend of mine was now taking head shots. Â We traded her taking pictures of me for me training her in pilates. Â We had a lot of fun during the shoot. Â I had no idea this would be the last set of head shots I would take.
I decided after years of pursuing acting I would stop the chase. Â I didnât love it anymore and I found something else that turned me on. Â Writing. Â I was urged to start writing by a few influential people. Â I started taking a writing class. Â I was terrified I would fail. Â I ended up meeting Dylan and I stopped taking the class. Â
I became Dylanâs girl and AmĂ©lie and Hudâs mom. Â
My latest headshot was on a huge sign and were placed all around my district. It was mind boggling to think how far I have come. Â
My new headshot is just me. Â It is me and all my flaws. Â 47 years and I see it all on my face. Â I am ready to embrace my latest headshot. Â I wonder where it will take me. Â

Louvima is dressed like a boy with a sword on her belt & a hat with a large white feather. âȘïž Louvima was the daughter of the royal courtier Francis Knollys, 1st Viscount Knollys, who was secretary to King Edward VII for 40 years. His name was made up of the first letters of Alexandraâs daughtersâ names, Louise, Victoria & Maud. đ The Devonshire Ball was a famous ball held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoriaâs reign, & was arranged by the Duchess of Devonshire (1832-1911) at her London home in Piccadilly on 2 July 1887 âȘïž More than 700 guests were invited, to be dressed in allegorical or historical costume before 1815. Many guests were photographed on the night of the ball, in a special photographic studio tent erected in the grounds, set up by James (Lauder) Lafayette. Other guests were photographed after the event, some in the new London studio of Lafayette or in the home of individual sitters, or by other photographers. A commemorative album was produced two years later & the ball was discussed & remembered for many years afterwards.
