Rosemary Leach stars as socialite Marion Grove, the latest target of Ray Barrett's sinister gold-digger, in Gideon's Way: The Lady-Killer (1.6, ITC, 1965)
#fave spotting#rosemary leach#gideon's way#the power game#susan weldon#itc#the lady killer#1965#classic tv#rosemary wouldn't start her run on The Power Game until the end of '65â where she'd be playing a very different type of character#to the naiveâ awkward innocent she is here. the characters do have something in common; they're both lonelyâ an odd sort of typecasting#that Rosemary nevertheless seemed to fall into (see similar contemporaneous roles in Galton and Simpson's Comedy Playhouse or various#single plays in drama anthologies) before later regular work in maternal guest spots. perhaps it was her looks? her character here is#undoubtedly meant to stir some kind of plain jane sympathyâ regardless of Rosemary's actual attractiveness (I'm putting this awkwardly;#personally i think she was an attractive woman but there's no denying the intention hereâ as her character is repeatedly implicitly#contrasted with Justine Lord's glamorous model)#then again her casting in TPG is as the desirable other woman (but then again againâ who would stray from Barbara Murray irl??)

Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austenâs novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)

Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e PaixĂŁo
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while itâs been a while since Iâve seen Bride and Prejudice, itâs got Indian musical numbers so câmon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe thatâs cause Iâm a sucker for P&P.

Biblical References in Lord Peter Wimsey Novels: Have His Carcase
I would like to eventually have a post like this for each book, but since this is the one I most recently finished, we're starting with this one instead of at the beginning.
If I've missed any, do tell, because I would love a Complete and Accurate List. I don't think there are any major spoilers here, but just in case, I'll put 'em under a cut!
Chapter 4:
"Who told you about the body?"
"I nosed it from afar. Where the carcase is, there shall be eagles gathered together. May I join you over the bacon and eggs?"
Chapter 8:
He had covenanted with himself to interview Colonel Belfridge at eleven o'clock.
This one is more Biblical language than an actual quote, but I'm counting it because according to my rules it fits.
Chapter 9:
"...Alexis wasn't the sort to take a long country walk for the intoxicating pleasure of sitting on a rock.
"True, O Queen. Live for ever. ..."
Chapter 10:
"Wilvercombe is the more probable direction of the two, because anybody coming from Lesston Hoe would have seen her and put his crime off to a more convenient season, as Shakespeare says."
This one cracks me up because Inspector Umpelty has, earlier in the chapter, attributed a quote to the Bible which is not one.
Chapter 12:
But now, with the hope that they might be found to have entertained an angel of darkness unawares, they foresaw all manner of publicity.
Chapter 16a:
"Two boats stationed off the Grinders."
"Fishermen?"
"Fishers of men, I fancy," replied Wimsey, grimly.
Chapter 16b:
Harriet: Oh, death! where is thy sting?
Chapter 16c:
Harriet (reading): 'Last of all the woman died also' â probably from backache.
Chapter 16d:
Harriet: What is that in your hand?
Peter: A dead starfish.
This one, I admit, some might argue about, but it is EXACTLY the kind of thing I would do, pull some obscure quote and have a character use it, so I'm giving DLS this one.
Chapter 21:
"A contempt for money, Inspector, is the rootâor at any rate, the very definite signâof all evil."
An adaptation rather than a quote, but a very strong one.
Chapter 23:
Presently the inner door opened again and the young lady emerged, clothed and apparently very much in her right mind, for she smiled round...
Chapter 25:
"Which brings us to the point that either Weldon's party wrote the letter or the foreign party did the murder."
"True, O king."
Chapter 31:
"I said the Wilvercombe alibi would stand, and it has broken in pieces like a potter's vessel."

WIP WEDNESDAY WHENEVER
I got tagged by @ghostoffuturespast and @chevvy-yates for WIP Wednesday Whenever. It is Wednesday where I am so that works out!
Firstly, things that are no longer WIP:
I made a mod!
I'm working on creating some tattoo replacers for the Johnny + V tattoo. The first release is Ros + V and So Mi + V, for all the dedicated SongV and Myers x V shippers out there. If you're looking for a fairly innocuous display of your V's OTP, look no further!
I have plans to expand this to the most popular Phantom Liberty characters, including Colonel Hansen, Bennett, Jago, Reed and Alex. Suggestions are welcome.
Now, WIP:
I'm going to be honest, I haven't written shit this week... but that's because I'm working on CyberNoir 1957 and a couple of other photo stories.
CyberNoir 1957
CyberNoir 1957 is Cyberpunk, but with a Noir influence, occuring within the Brother's Shadow timeline. Val, the half-sister of Vincent 'V' Gonzalez, and known to be a member of the Mox, follows Judy's story arc as a 1950s Private Eye. Currently, she's investigating the hive of debauchery known as 'Clouds' in search for Judy Alvarez's 'friend' Evelyn.
Part 3 of CyberNoir will come out by the end of the week.
I Made a Cop AU
Your eyes do not deceive you. I introduce to you Detective Valerie Ocampo-Gonzalez, NCPD.
Testing the NCPD V Equipment mod and I made a theoretical Val, if she decided against joining the Mox and became a Badge instead. Obviously, Judy does not approve and they stop being friends, so Val marries Melanie.
Val also becomes close friends with River Ward and... Harold Han (aka the guy who covered up the assassination of Lucius Rhyne for Weldon Holt). River does not initially trust Val, partly because she had connections to a gang, and partly because Han had warmed up to her so quickly. Eventually, Val works with V (a completely original V, not sure if I want them to be Masc or Fem yet) and River to unveil the truth behind Rhyne's death, and River finally trusts her, resulting in this exchange...
(I genuinely like River, but he's not really Val's type).
The President's Lady
Still plugging away at Chapter 4. I want to develop the relationship between Vega and Myers a little bit before we go back to the Reed POV as he begins his dark descent into treason.
The Presidential AV sat on the White House lawn, the port access door flanked by a pair of Marines in Dress Blues. They saluted as the President approached, having changed into her iconic suit once more. Myers adjusted her Aviators, returning their salute as she boarded the AV. V followed closely behind. Myers held her hand out to V, âUp you get.â V took her hand. One of the Marines flinched slightly, perhaps shocked, perhaps angered. Either way, it was not their place to question the Presidentâs decisions. With all passengers accounted for, one of the Marines boarded, and the other helped seal the hatch, backing away as the green and white Presidential AV lifted off the turf, the wash of its engines blowing grass out of the ground as it lifted up and away.
Hand holding!? Scandalous!
Anyway, that's it for me for now. I'm going to tag: @ouroboros-hideout @streetkid-named-desire @theviridianbunny (feel free to participate if you want, and I apologise if you got double tagged).

On 27th March 1625, King James VI died.
James Charles Stuart has many facts, myths and urban legends surrounding him, this is just one of them.
Rumours have abounded for centuries that James was a homosexual, I'm not saying he wasn't but at very least you might call him bisexual, he did after all father seven children to his wife, only three of whom survived. Known for writing poetry, there is little doubt he loved his wife, Anne, and wrote many poems and love letters to her throughout their marriage. Most of the rumors of Jamesâ sexual orientation came from Sir Anthony Weldon, who was a bitter enemy of the king, whose writings were published long after James was dead.
One of the most amusing quotes from King James regarding marriage and women was when, at the Hampton Court Conference, the Puritan leaders complained of a line in English wedding vows where the groom says to bride âwith my body, I thee worship.â Jamesâ response was âIf you had a good wife yourself, you would think all worship and honour you could do her, were well bestowed upon her.â
James supposed lover was George Villiers was a courtier who became a favourite of King James I. The King became infatuated with him and made him Viscount in 1616, Earl in 1617, Marquis in 1618 and Duke of Buckingham in 1623. Outmanoeuvring his rivals the Howards, Villiers was appointed Lord High Admiral in 1619. He manipulated the lovestruck King James to gain unprecedented control over royal patronage, rewarding himself and his family generously. He married his relations into the most important families in England. His own marriage was to Lady Catherine Manners, only daughter of the wealthy Earl of Rutland. Was their friendship more than platonic? To coin a Scottish phrase, "
Mibbes aye mibbes naw."
James had a deep and terrible fear of witchcraft and personally oversaw many witch trials while ruling in Scotland. He saw witchcraft as a branch of theology and even wrote a famous treatise titled Daemonologie, in which he dealt with sorcery, magic, and even vampires and werewolves!
James had a relatively peaceful reign, except for the infamous Gunpowder Plot, and kept taxes low. He was known as both the British Solomon and was called âthe wisest fool in Christendomâ by the King of France. James was both a brute and a gentleman, a sloth and a scholar, a boor and a poet, paranoid and cunning.
Perhaps we should look at his mother's French Emissary Monsieur de Fontenay who had the following to say regarding the young Jamesâ character and traits:
âI have been well received by the king, who has treated me better in reality than in appearance. He give me much credit, but does not show me much kindness. Since the day of my arrival he has ordered me to live in his house along with the earls and lords, and that I shall have access to him in his cabinet just as the others have⊠.
To tell you truly what I think of him â I consider him the first prince in the world for his age. ⊠. He apprehends and conceives quickly, he judges ripely and with reason, and he retains much and for a long time. In questioning he is quick and piercing, and solid in his answers. ⊠He is learned in many languages, sciences, and affairs of state. more so than probably anyone in his realm. In a word he has a miraculous wit, and moreover is full of noble glory and a good opinion of himself.
Having been brought up in the midst of constant fears, he is timid and will not venture to contradict the great lords; yet he wishes to be thought brave.
He hates dancing and music in general and especially all the mincing affectations of the court ⊠.
From want of proper instruction his manners are boorish and very rough, as well in his way of speaking, eating. dress, amusements and conversation, even in the company of women.
He is never at rest in one place but takes a singular pleasure in walking; but his gait is very ungainly and his step is wandering and unsteady, even in a room. His voice is thick and very deep as he speaks. ⊠He is weak of body ⊠But to sum up, he is an old young man. âŠ
He misunderstands the real extent of his poverty and weakness; he boasts too much of himself and he despises other princes. In the second place, he disregards the wishes of his subjects; and lastly, he is too idle and careless in business and too much addicted to his own pleasures, chiefly hunting. ⊠He told me that he really gave greater attention to business than he seemed to do for he could get through more work in one hour than others could in a day. âŠ"
James ruled Scotland as James VI from 24th July 1567 and, as you might recall from my post a few days ago, ruled in England, Wales and Ireland as James 1st from 24th March, 1603. He died 27th March, 1625 at Theobalds House, and his remains lie in the Henry VII Lady Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
The third pic shows James's body next to Henry VII and his queen in the vault

Piecework Summer 2023
I like to feature the projects with full directions contained in this issue although there are multiple historical and contemporary articles that offer inspiration as well.
The cover project with the dragons in cross-stitch is a linen pin-cushion created by Deanna Hall West based on a 1885 needlework book which had me thinking what we really need is to put some dragons on sweaters.
The 1909 Ladyâs Mitts in lilac are a re-working of a pattern from Weldonâs Practical Knitter by Liz Stewart using size 2 needles and Cascade Yarns Heritage Silk a mix of merino and silk. Although they did not have cell phones to play with, they did need their fingers free yet warmed.
The cream colored square with the puffy set of leaves was inspired by the novel Anne of Green Gables, the story of a spunky orphan, and an 1871 book of patterns for knitted counterpanes, or bedspreads. This is such a daunting task that Joyce Noverr who reworked the pattern, suggests you ponder a throw, a pillow, or even a pin cushion instead.
The tiny bird with the black bead for an eye is a first project in bobbin lace created by Karen H. Thompson from DMC Perle Cotton size 8. This accompanies an article by Evelyn McMillan on far more elaborate lace projects which depicted mythical stories, and there is another on applique embroidery upon netting--called Swiss embroidery, for some reason by Karin J. Bohleke.
The cover story on Aran sweaters, the heavily cabled versions we know today, explains how no one wore such a thing in Ireland before the mid-20th century, which makes them what historians call an invented tradition. Invented, in this case, in order to create a mythic story about how old and symbolic the stitch patterns were so as to sell more sweaters! Suffragettes knitting are another topic and so are thimbles, plus there is more.
Find it at your local bookstore or online here: https://pieceworkmagazine.com/search/?search=magazine

To Love Who Wears The Crown Pt. 7
Pairing: Modern Royals: King!Bucky x Reader
Word Count: 2.6k
Warnings: I don't think there are any warnings here tbh they discuss the kidnapping stuff
Genre: sorta fluff maybe a little angst
Summary: You meet the king of Andia by chance when he hosts a ball and he's immediately taken with you, enough to invite you to spend your summer at the palace with him while he formally courts you. Although he's everything you could dream of from the moment you arrive, nothing is ever straightforward in the world of powerful people. Who would have thought that when you tripped over his feet at a dance you'd eventually have to find out what it means to love a king.
***
The first few days after your return are hard. Every small sound makes you panicky. You're skittish and nervous and refuse to be left alone. Sam or Steve is with you when Bucky can't be and if none of them is available Kate stays with you. She seems to be doing well with the guard so far and has basically become your personal guard. The only time you're alone is when you have to take calls from Weldon to check on Monica. You still haven't figured out a way out of this situation and it's making you more nervous as your announcement party draws closer. You managed to get it pushed back another week when you got back, using the excuse that you were too shaken up to think about celebrating but you didn't want to put it off for long and give Bucky the wrong idea. You know your behaviour is worrying James, you can tell by the way he dotes on you more than usual. He hasn't pushed you to talk about your kidnapping but you've finally decided it's time to talk to him. Kate follows you down the palace halls as you make your way to Bucky's office.
"You're walking so fast Lady y/n. What's wrong?" Kate frowns.
"I have something important I've been needing to talk to Bucky about and I've wasted enough time stalling since I got back." You explain to her.
"Geez." Kate says under her breath. You pull open his office door and three heads turn to you. Nat and Steve seem to have been deep in discussion with Bucky before you walked in.
"Oh- sorry to interrupt I didn't realize you were in the middle of something." You say.
"Come here." Bucky holds a hand out to you. You walk over to where he's seated and place your hand in his.
"I didn't mean to interrupt." You say.
"Don't ever apologize for being anywhere that I am doll. Okay?" He says, looking at you.
"Okay." You whisper.
"Now, what is it?"
"I need to talk to you about something, but it can wait if you're busy." You tell him.
"Leave." He says.
"Buck we're in the middle of-"
"Steve, it can wait." Bucky says, cutting him off. Natasha rolls her eyes and walks out with Steve behind her.
"I'm never too busy for you. What is it y/n?" Bucky asks.
"Actually this is kind of sensitive so I'd rather we talk about it away from the palace." You tell him.
"Away from the palace?" He frowns.
"Can we go to your little cave spot? I know it's cold but we need to be alone. Please?" You ask.
"Of course." Bucky stands. Bucky leads you quickly out of the palace and through the gardens until you reach the cliffside. You walk through the dark cave and eventually pop out at the lake where you let out a calming sigh. "What's all this about y/n? Is everything alright?" Bucky looks at you with concern.
"No- everything is not alright. We need to talk about my kidnapping." You say.
"Only if you're ready to talk about it. Don't feel like you have to for any reason y/n."
"James you have a rat." You sigh.
"A rat? There aren't any rodents in the palace." Bucky shakes his head.
"No James not a rodent. Someone in that palace is working against you with the king of Weldon. It's why I asked you to bring me here." You say.
"There's a traitor?" He blinks at you.
"Iâd guess several. It's how I got kidnapped I'm sure. Itâs the only thing that makes sense. They came in through my balcony without anyone noticing and somehow the king of Weldon knew the nature of our relationship and knew you were planning a ball soon. A ball you hadn't even announced yet. How would he know that?"
"Unless someone inside was feeding him information."
"Exactly."
"Do you have any idea who it is?"
"Not yet. The palace staff is huge and truthfully it could be anyone, but I figure it's most likely someone close enough to one of us to observe details of our relationship. A guard maybe or- one of the dinner staff who serve us."
"Wait a second so you were kidnapped from your balcony?"
"Yes." You nod.
"The guards at your door claimed they didn't hear anything at the time of your disappearance- I almost had them killed on the spot." Bucky scoffs.
"You didn't though, did you?" You frown.
"No. Though I'm starting to think maybe I should have- especially if there's a traitor among us."
"Hang on how did you find out I was missing?"
"Izzy, she went into your room or something, saw you weren't in there, asked the guards if you told them where you were going and they said you hadn't left." Bucky explains. "Now that you're telling me someone can't be trusted it makes sense that the guards didn't hear anything-"
"Actually Bucky that might be because I was unconscious before I could scream so- unless they made a significant amount of noise while moving me, there's no reason the guards outside would have heard me getting kidnapped. I don't remember who was posted that day, but I don't think them not hearing anything is enough reason to throw them into extra suspicion."
"We have to find out who it is y/n. A traitor weakens the whole kingdom." Bucky says.
"Yes, I know. We have to be discrete though. The king of Weldon is having me watched I'm sure. You can't do anything until I manage to catch the traitor."
"Until you manage to catch the traitor? Do you have a plan?"
"Not yet- but I'm working on one. You can't get involved, but I want you to know because, you know, you have to be careful. Please, be mindful of who you're trusting in the palace." You say.
"I understand but you have to be careful too. Especially if you're trying to catch this person on your own. Don't do anything overly risky." Bucky tells you.
"Yeah- I know. I'll be safe. We should go back now, so you can finish your meeting."
"You're sure? I can stay with you if you want." Bucky suggests.
"Honestly Jamie there's not a moment I don't want you to stay with me, but I'm not unreasonable. You stopped your meeting to talk to me, that's really sweet but you do have to do your job." You laugh.
"I mean I don't have to. We could just play hooky." Bucky smirks.
"Your majesty, how bold of you to suggest." You giggle.
"What can I say? I'm full of surprises." He winks at you.
"How about today, you go finish your meeting while I plan how to catch Judas and we play hooky on another day." You suggest.
"You're no fun." Bucky jokes.
"You're ridiculous." You scoff. "Let's go back now, I'm sure Steve and Nat will start looking for you again soon, plus it's cold." You take his hand and head back through the cave towards the palace.
"I know Nat liked you already but I truly think you've won her over with the whole not letting me slack off thing." Bucky chuckles. The two of you walk back to the palace where Kate is waiting by the main entrance.
"Y/n, your majesty, you're back." She says, standing up.
"Hi Kate." You say to her.
"Hi Kate." Bucky smiles.
"Alright, you go find Natasha and Stevie." You tell him.
"Yes ma'am. I'll see you as soon as I'm done." Bucky says, kissing your cheek.
"No rush, my love." You smile at him.
"You guys are so cute wow." Kate gushes as the two of you walk back towards your room while Bucky heads the other way.
"Thank you Kate." You chuckle.
"What's it like dating the king? I mean, he's a pretty alright boss but he doesn't seem all that nice except for when he's around you. It's like there's two of him. The calm and cool king who runs everything and scares people with his stone face and then the totally whipped softy who would like probably give up his crown if you asked him to." Kate rambles.
"Kate." You laugh.
"Sorry- sorry it's just that, you know it's so interesting that he's so different with you."
"Do you expect your boss to be kissing you on the cheek Kate?" You chuckle.
"Well obviously not that but with how much he dotes on you it's curious that it doesn't show up really anywhere else. Like he reserves his softer side for just you."
"I wouldn't go that far. He's kind and fair to everyone I think, which is more than you can say for other rulers, but there's an expectation of kings, they're supposed to be somewhat unyielding and that can leave little room for softness." You shrug.
"Well yeah I guess that makes sense. Don't get me wrong he's a good boss. I've definitely had worse. I like that he's so nice to you. It shows that he has a softer side, even if he can't exemplify it professionally."
"I think what matters more than his kindness to me is his kindness to the people." You hum, entering your room with Kate behind you.
"Man I hope the king does marry you."
"Oh- thank you." You chuckle.
"I just mean that I think you'd make a really good queen. You complement him well and I think you'd have Andia's best interests in mind." She says.
"I appreciate your candor Kate." You muse.
"I know I have a tendency to talk more than I'm asked." She nods.
"I think it's nice. I'm sure it gets you into trouble but honestly walking through the halls and hearing no conversation most times is odd. James, Steve, Sam, and Natasha seem to be the only ones who like, talk often. None of the staff talks all that much."
"I think they're scared of saying the wrong thing and one of them hear." Kate tells you.
"I hadn't thought of that. I hope that changes if I stay here." You say.
"I hope so too. It's hard talking to people that do not engage. Like man you'd think they have no personality. That's not true though, some of them are super cool- but they're so scared to talk when they're not in the staff areas, like the kitchen."
"I know some of them are super cool, I make a point to talk to as many of them as I come across when I get the chance." You say. "Since you enjoy talking so much, why don't you tell me about yourself? Where are you from?" You ask her. Kate is quick to launch into stories about her home and growing up and you're happy to listen to her talk.
~*~*~
You pull open the doors to your room and step out to talk to the guards.
"Hey guys have either of you seen Izzy? I need to ask her something." You ask them.
"Oh she was on her way to you when she got a phone call- she went around the corner." One of the guards, Louis, tells you pointing in the direction she went.
"Thank you Lou." You nod heading down the hall to try and find her.
"You can't call me during the day like this it's too risky." You hear her hiss into her phone.
"I'm just trying to understand why there have been no updates." You faintly hear the voice of the other person.
"The ball was moved following her return a couple of weeks ago dad. No one felt like celebrating because she'd been missing for three days. It's rescheduled for the day after tomorrow so just chill. By the end of next week, King James will not be a problem." She says and you have to cover your mouth to stop from gasping. Izzy's the traitor?!
"You'd better make sure it happens." The other person warns.
"I'll try but she's never alone these days. Except when someone calls her about Monica. She's alright isn't she?"
"Of course she is, she's our bargaining chip. That's not your concern Isabel. Focus on what you have to do over there."
"I'm trying dad." She sighs.
"Do not let me down." You hear a beep signaling the end of the call and another drawn out sigh. You round the corner quickly to confront Izzy, grabbing her phone and looping your arm through hers. She gasps at your sudden presence and starts to stutter out something but you cut her off.
"We're going to go to my room and you're not going to cause a scene on the way there or I swear to you this will be your last day with all your appendages." You tell her calmly. She hardly breathes as you make the walk back to your room in silence.
"Lady y/n I-"
"Kate if you don't mind I need to discuss something with Izzy privately." You say. Kate, who had been sitting in a beanbag chair in your room, hurries to stand. âStay close.â You add.
"Alright. I'll uh- I'll be around if you need anything. Just holler." She says before darting out of the room.
"You're a traitor." You say to Izzy.
"You don't understand-"
"No, I understand perfectly. You've been watching the king and subsequently me and giving information to the king of Weldon that he could use to his advantage. It makes perfect sense. I can't believe I didn't see it right away I mean I've been pouring over this since he mentioned it- the ball, how the hell did he know about the ball- we hadn't even made plans for it yet. But I told you as soon as I came back from lunch that day. How else would the kidnappers know when I would be alone in my room? Of course. it had to be you. I just- I can't believe this."
"I didn't want to y/n please, you have to believe me."
"Why would I believe anything out of your mouth?!" You scoff.
"The king of Weldon is my father." She rushes out.
"That doesn't help you-"
"He's my father, but I'm not- the queen wasn't my mother. He got my mother pregnant and for years he didn't even know I existed. I don't know when or how he found out but after the queen died he reached out to my mom saying he wanted to get to know me. My mother assumed he was genuine and hey I wanted to believe it too, after all, I was his only kid. But he sent me here. Told me my only use to him was helping him take down the king of Andia." She explains.
"And you just went along with it?"
"He threatened my mother! Told me if I didn't do as he asked he would have her exiled. She's lived in Weldon all her life, everything she knows is there I couldn't- I had to." Izzy's shoulders sink as she talks.
"Then who's watching you?" You frown.
"What?" She blinks at you.
"He's blackmailing you, as he is me. You're watching me but someone has to be watching you. If you're here by force there's no way he trusts you to work alone. Who else here is working for him?"
"I can't tell you." She shakes her head.
"You can if you want to live." You tell her.
"Y/n!" She gasps.
"Reasoning aside Izzy, you are still a traitor and if you refuse to give up the other people that pose threats to the kingdom I'll have no choice but to tell James you are guilty of treason."
"No- you can't." She breathes.
"Then tell me who else here is a Weldon spy."
"But my mother-"
"Your mother would be granted refuge here in Andia. Do what is right. Save yourself, save her so that I can save Monica and protect James." You tell her lowly. Izzy pauses for a long while before she lets out a sigh.
"Alright. I'll tell you." She relents.

Barbara âLady Loveâ Mason (August 9, 1947) is a popular singer/songwriter and one of the true pioneers of Philly Soul, as she entered the music scene as a teenager. She was born in Philadelphia to a homemaker mother and a father who worked for the Philadelphia Water Department.
At the age of 12, she was the lead singer in groups she formed after winning local talent shows. She lived next door to Bill Oxendine, a member of the Larks who in turn introduced her to Weldon Arthur McDougal III, a record label executive. McDougal introduced her to Jimmy Bishop, a local DJ, and founder of Arctic Records. Bishop signed and released her debut single âTrouble Childâ before she was 15.
In 1964, she released âCome to Me/Girls Have Feelings Tooâ which was a moderate success. In 1965, she recorded âYes Iâm Readyâ which became her first hit, peaking at #2 on the Billboard R&B chart, #3 on the US Cash Box Top 100, and #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It ranked at #12 on the Canadian Top Singles chart.
âSad, Sad Girl,â peaked at #12 on the Billboard chart, followed by âI Need Loveâ which peaked at #5. Her 1968 hit âOh, How It Hurtsâ peaked at #11 on the Billboard chart. She released âRaindrops Keep Fallinâ on my Head/If You Knew Him Like I Do,â which peaked at #38 on the Billboard pop chart.
She released âBed and Board,â which peaked at #24 on the Billboard chart, followed by âGive Me Your Loveâ which peaked at #9, and âChild of Tomorrowâ which peaked at #79 on the Billboard R&B chart. Her two releases, âFrom His Woman to Youâ and âShackinâ Upâ peaked at #3 and #9 respectively on the Billboard R&B chart. âI Am Your Woman, She is Your Wifeâ peaked at #14.
She released two singles: âI Never Love the Same Way Twiceâ and âSheâs Got Papers, But I Got the Man.â She formed her publishing company.
She was invited to sing at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. She began to do periodic performances. She released âFeeling Blueâ and âThe Soft Touch.â
She was still performing to sold-out audiences in 2016, she was part of a âLegends of Soulâ concert, and in 2018 she headlined a âForever Oldies Tourâ. She was inducted into the Soul Music Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

My Fief for an Apple
Cringetober 2023, Day 7: Mary-Sue.
On AO3
Rating T - 1,636 words - Tortall - OC Future Fic
Summary: When Weldon's Son gets trapped in a ditch with his injured horse, Raoul and Buri's Daughter comes to their rescue.
Story:
Phillip surveyed his gelding, Bangle miserably. He was grateful at least that when theyâd suddenly pitched off the road, Bangle fell in a way that he didnât break his neck. Maybe more impressively the horseâs great body also didnât break Phillipâs neck
While theyâd survived the fall, they were both injured. Bangle had hurt his ankle. On his own he would never get out of this ditch. Phillip wasnât of much help since his own knee was swollen and painful with what he hoped was a bad sprain.
Bangle was making awful sounds of distress. Phillip searched his saddle bag, hoping he had anything to distract the horse with, while they waited for a someone to pass by on the road. They were on the outskirts of a smaller village where the crown was hosting a jousting tournament. Eventually, someone would walk down the road. Phillip would be able to beg or bribe them for help. He just wished he could do something for his poor horse now.
âMy fief for an apple,â he told the air.
An apple soared through the air, thudding into his lap with absolute precision. He turned to the the road, looking up to see a woman astride her horse. He made note of the fabric muffling her tackâthatâs why he hadnât heard her coming.
He told her, âwell, Iâm not giving you my fief. Youâve got more than enough land of your own.â
Phillip recognized Lady Knight Amiram of GoldenLake and Malorieâs Peak. She was probably the most recognizable knight in Tortall. She had her motherâs golden skin. The masses of curling black hair could have come from either parent, though she wore it in the braids of the Raadeh clan. Her eyes of darkest blue, like ripe winter sloe berries were what marked her as her fatherâs daughter. There was good humor twinkling in the depths of her eyes.
Phillip had never met her. Heâd seen her at tournaments or riding with the Kingâs Own. She was death with a lance. The fiercest jouster in the kingdom. Heâd seen her compete before, proud and confident. She was like an aspect of the Goddess herself.
There was a legend the Own told that she had killed a giant when she was just a girl. Sheâd strung up a trip rope at the edge of a sudden drop with a lance propped up at the bottom. Then sheâd drawn the giantâs attention, getting it to chase her through the woods of Goldenlake to where sheâd rigged her trap.
âWhat fief am I being cheated of?â She asked.
Phillip got to his feet, wincing in pain. He sketched a bow. âIâm Phillip of Cavall.â
âAh. Of course, you are. I donât know why I didnât realize it sooner.â
Phillip felt a sense of pleased surprise. Heâs never met Lady Amiram. She started as a page when he became a squire and so on, just missing each other. But heâd never have guessed, âYou recognize me?â
The Lady blushed. âI recognize your horse.â
Phillip deflated. He made an admirable effort to hide it. âCavalli horses are the best. I imagine someone who jousts as competitively as you do always has an eye for such things, Lady Amiram.â
She wasnât taken back at all by his casual recognition of her. Phillip assumed that everywhere she went folks recognized her.
âJust Ama is fine.â She dismounted her horse. âAre you going to give that apple to your horse or did you make that request for yourself.â
Phillip had forgotten that he was holding the fruit. He offered it to Bangle, who pathetically munched on it. âWeâve fallen off the road and injured ourselves,â he pointed out somewhat unnecessarily. âIf you wouldnât mind helping, Iâm sure we could get Bangle back on to solid ground.â
Ama looked them over, whistled. âThat hole in the road sure got you.â
âHole?â Phillip asked dumbstruck. He hadnât seen a hole and didnât like the idea that he could have been oblivious too it.
âDonât berate yourself about it,â she advised him, sensing his thoughts in his tone. âThe local lads have been covering it with a layer of leaves.â
Phillip saw red. âSomeone deliberately did this?â His horse was whining in pain.
Ama produced a rope from her saddle bag, tying one end to her horseâs saddle.
âWith all the knights visiting town for the tournament the local girls have been ignoring the local lads. And the local lads have decided to take that out on the knights. Thereâs little traps all over the village.â
She slid down the edge of the road into the ditch. She handed Phillip the free end of the rope. He suppressed his rage focusing on getting Bangle securely tied.
âAnd you know this how?â He asked.
She gave him a sideways smile. âSome of the local lads told me when I was checking in. I think their dislike of us knights only extends to you boys.â
âRidiculous,â Phillip grumbled. âIâm hardly out here toying with girls. I donât blow into town, bed whoever I want, and then carry on my merry way.â Phillip suddenly remembered Amaâs somewhat salacious reputation. âNot that thereâs anything wrong about that, I justâŠâ
She waited for him to pick his sentence back up but he couldnât find the words. âMy great-great-aunt Sebila, who marches on despite considerable age and infirmity, often says no man will marry me the way I, in her words, carry on like a feral cat in heat. I can never decide if itâs worse or better than the talking-tos my father got while he was a bachelor.â
âAny man would be lucky to marry you,â Phillip said with absolute conviction and completely by accident. He cursed his loose lips as she walked to the far side of Bangle.
She greeted the horse, giving him a chance to get used to her. The whole while Phillip couldnât see her expression.
âAre you able to help push him up?â She asked.
Phillip lurched to Bangleâs other side ignoring the discomfort in his knee. âOf course.â
âAlright then.â She didnât sound convinced. âOn three.â She looked to her horse. âOn three Killy.â The horse flicked his ears forward and backward in acknowledgement. The uncanny human understanding of an animal that spent time around the Wild Mage.
Ama braced herself and called, âone.â Phillip had heard other men talk about her, the beauty who could wield any weapon she got her hands on. She certainly wasnât lacking for offers of marriage, just not accepting them. âTwo.â When she was a page, sheâd excelled in every subject. She done so well that her entire class was better than average for trying to keep up with her. Myles of Olau had often said âeveryone runs faster to keep up with Ama of Goldenlake.â And Phillip felt like he understood why. âThree.â
Amaâs horse, Killy pulled hard at the rope as Phillip and Ama each shoved one of Bangleâs haunches. Between the four of them they got Bangle back on the road. Ama leaped up after him, reaching a hand back to Phillip. He clamored his way out of the ditch.
âIt doesnât matter,â she said, like he had any idea what she was referring to.
âWhat?â He asked breathless from the struggle to get on the road and the pain in his leg.
âIf I never get married, it doesnât matter,â she said. âIâm inheriting all of Goldenlake either way.
He didnât know what the right response to that was all he could think to say was, âmy sisters talk about that a lot.â
âIâll bet,â she said with a snort. She started untying the rope from Killy. âThey stood to loose Cavall to a cousin, if your parents hadnât managed to have you.â
She moved on to untying Bangle. Her muscles were tense, as if she expected anger from him.
âI was an accident,â he announced.
She caught his gaze, shocked. âYou were not.â
âI absolutely was. My mother was at an age where my parents werenât bothering themselves about pregnancy charms anymore. Turns out itâs rather common.â
She took Phillipâs saddle bag and attached it to Killy. âA happy accident, Iâm sure.â
âIf you go to the law library and look at the records from when your father was petitioning to have you made heir, my father was one of his staunchest supporters.â
âYou were already born then,â she said. âWhat did he have to gain.â
âIt was the only thing my father didnât like about not having a son. The idea that my sisterâs claim to Cavall would never be seen as completely legitimate.â
âI suppose we should limp back to town. You can ride on Killy if youâd like. Heâs a calm enough sort.â
Phillip was briefly seized by a manly vanity that urged him to turn down the offer. Luckily, the madness passed and he clamored onto the horse.
The ambled down the road. Ama produced another apple from her saddle bag, which she took a bite of before offering the rest to Killy.
âYouâre jousting tomorrow,â heâd meant to ask it as a question (even though he knew she was.)
âI donât think you or your horse are in any state to challenge me,â she said with a wicked smile.
âActually, I was wondering if I could take you out to dinner.â
He enjoyed the little blush that crept along her neck. He took it as a good sign.
âThereâs a banquet.â
âSkip it.â
âAlright, but I picked out a very pretty dress for this evening. If youâre going to be the only one who sees me wearing it, then you have to make it worth my time.â
Phillip never thought heâd feel lucky to have fallen into a ditch.Â
