It's no mystery how Lady Sybil fell in love with Sam Vimes. She's quite used to caring for good hearted, self destructive little critters one occasionally needs to scrape off the floor

Terry Pratchett is amazing at writing women, this isn't a new thing to say. But I was having a think about how he wrote women, and tried to think up what common thread there was between his woman characters (especially because with most authors, especially male authors, you tend to be able to tell the author's 'type' by the way they write woman love interests).
At first I couldn't think of anything, because Pterry wrote such a diverse range of personalities, ages, jobs, body types etc.
And then it hit me. The one prevailing thread in all the Pratchett books I've read so far: Pterry's woman characters are just so opinionated. And I love that.

I love the Discworld dwarfs.
"Sam!" said Lady Sybil, advancing through the throng. "They're going to perform `Bloodaxe and Ironhammer'! Isn't that wonderful?" "Er..." "It's an opera, sir," Cheery whispered. "Part of the Koboldean Cycle. It's history. Every dwarf knows it by heart. It's about how we got laws, and kings... and the Scone, sir." "I sang the part of Ironhammer when we did it at finishing school," said Lady Sybil. "Not the full five-week version, of course. It'd be marvelous to see it done here. It's really one of the great romances of history." "Romances?" said Vimes. "Like... a love story?" "Yes. Of course." "Bloodaxe and Ironhammer were both... er... weren't both..." Vimes began. "They were both dwarfs, sir," said Cheery. "Ah. Of course." Vimes gave up. All dwarfs were dwarfs. --- Sir Terry Pratchett, The Fifth Elephant

Well, it helped that Sybil knew more or less everybody, or at least everybody who was female, of a certain age, and who had been to the Quirm College for Young Ladies at the same time as Sybil. There appeared to be hundreds of them. They all seemed to have names like Bunny or Bubbles, they kept in touch meticulously, they'd all married influential or powerful men, they all hugged one another when they met, and went on about the good old days in Form 3b or whatever, and if they acted together, they could probably run the world or, it occurred to Vimes, might already be doing so.
They were Ladies Who Organize.

Prompts time! Had a couple requests for Lady Sybil! And then I added Vimes! And then it got rather romantic <3
I like to think this is just after they get back home, after some sort of official to-do (I imagine the helmet with plumes and the wig are discarded somewhere in a corner XD)
@stuffbyshelby2 and @koncussionkat, thanks for the Sybil prompts!

For a guy who never really shows interest in anyone Vetinari sure gets shipped with a lot of people huh!
Inspiration image and the names the hands belong to under the cut
Tumblr media
Apparently this is a still from the move "Malena", I found it on Pinterest I think
From right to left the hands belong to: Sybil Ramkin, Lord Downey, Moist Von Lipwig, Sam Vimes, Lady Margolotta, and Rufus Drumknott. Leonard da quirm is in the background inventing a blowtorch

She smiled at him.
And then it arose and struck Vimes that, in her own special category, she was quite beautiful; this was the category of all the women, in his entire life, who has ever thought he was worth smiling at. She couldn't do worse, but then, he couldn't do better. So maybe it balanced out. She wasn't getting any younger but then, who was? And she had style and money and common-sense and self-assurance and all the things that he didn't, and she had opened her heart, and if you let her she could engulf you; the woman was a city.
And eventually, under siege, you did what Ankh-Morpork had always done - unbar the gates, let the conquerors in, and make them your own.

Sam Vimes is a guy who'd know an assassination attempt by the way the wind flows through the key hole of a door but would absolutely miss the pickles in his sandwich, after he asked for no Pickles.
Lady Sybil is a woman who will get a new sandwich without pickles, even though her husband already has finished the first without visible signs of displeasure and proceeded to take his first bite from the paper plate.
She knows he's too entrenched into work matters to critically analyze the appearance and origin of a second sandwich, but her beloved husband wanted no pickles and damnit, no pickles he shall have!

Headcanon
Sybil has ‘talked wicked young and spoke at an adult level by age three’ autism, and Vetinari has ‘didn’t talk until age five and casually started speaking like an adult one day’ autism.

At first I thought...
...maybe, they're very similar in some of their attitudes. But then I thought about it harder, and really, Lady Sybil Vimes and Miss Piggy just would not hit it off. Lady Vimes is high-bred old-money English; Miss Piggy is small-town nouveau riche all-American. They're on entirely different wavelengths from each other.
(Obviously a subplot of the crossover special would be Miss Piggy going to increasingly ridiculous lengths to find a stepladder tall enough to look Lady Vimes square in the eye for once.)
