Hi Tracy! I preordered the Lackadaisy essentials book and I’m super excited for it! Normally I don’t get books when I don’t need the physical copy for the story but the Lackadaisy is a masterpiece and deserves every penny! I was curious how much art is in the book, is it a collection of all art from Patreon and the gallery? Admittedly I’m really there for the Rocky art! My favorite drawings from you are all those little stand alone drawings of him, I wish you and Fable the best of luck!

Hey - thank you! I hope you'll like it once it comes out! The book contains big graphical spreads for each of the characters, featuring color art, sketches, writing and bio information about them. It also contains a sizable collection of mini comics, an art section for standalone illustrations and paintings, and a collection of tutorials and art process breakdowns.

in the Lackadaisy Ingenue short there's a bit where Viktor calls Mordecai stupid

he does this while making up a story about how Mordecai busted his arm and delivers it with a smile. he's trying to get Ivy off the scent but it seems in his animation that he knows Mordecai is there and listening to him and is trying to tease him

this works because they banter and insult one another all the time and there's no real teeth in it - Viktor calling him an idiot who can't rollerskate feels playful, because Mordecai wouldn't be caught dead rollerskating indoors and Viktor knows he can't contradict him since it's a cover story. it's also a bit of a reprimand - Mordecai got himself hurt on the job and Viktor calling him an idiot for that reads like an 'I care about his wellbeing and that's why I say he's stupid' type of line

but Stolas repeatedly insulting Blitzo in Mastermind does not read playful at all. he's trying to sell the Goetias on his stupid mastermind lie, sure, but some of the things he says are so specific and mean that it reads like he really does think that. and worse - it almost feels that he's angry and framing the whole trial as him getting Blitzo out of a mess that Blitzo alone created

but he didn't. Stolas chose to lend out his book and like usual is reframing everything so he had nothing to do with it - his asking 'why am I sacrificing my freedom' when you look back at what actually happened in the show is essentially him saying 'why don't I just hide the thing I did forever because it would benefit me to lie'

Nailed it. Viktor and Mordecai might push each other's buttons relentlessly, but they're two characters who spend a lot of time together, know each other extremely well, and can grouse and snarl and bitch without it coming across as if there's zero respect, as if they absolutely hate spending time together. Even when they're playing chess and Mordecai's jabs are more personal and Viktor's response more threatening, they both back off as quickly as they started and start talking about something else. It's a dance they're used to.

Blitz and Stolas don't know anything about each other outside of sex, they have an enormous power imbalance that Stolas has been only too happy to exploit, and all they've ever been shown to do is make each other cry. Viv just tells us they like and respect each other because that's the world that exists in her head, and not on the screen.

By all on-screen indications, Stolas really does think Blitz is stupid.

Lackadaisy Essentials art books...

...are finally in the warehouse! Kickstarter backers, you should begin receiving your books this month.  Meanwhile, Iron Circus is selling a very limited number of extra books. These will come with a signed bookplate, and will ship immediately after the Kickstarter backer books are fulfilled. (Likely in July.)

I believe we’re at about 100 left as I type this. The Essentials is a large hardcover book, clothbound with a gold foil title and dust jacket. It contains ~140 pages of character art spreads and bios, mini-comics, tutorials and full color illustrations! -----------------------------------------

Regarding Viv's Behavior at the Annie Awards

No, this isn't someone who had a bad day. This is someone who showed up thinking they'd win.

I am certain she arrived at the award ceremony all giggles and smiles, and when she wasn't announced that's when the mood soured.

Judging by the way she acts and the way she holds herself, and how she views poor people (Despite claiming she was middle class and clawed her way, but we later found out that was a lie.) you'd think she had some understandings of people's struggles?

Look, I know this all because when I was younger I wanted awards, I wasn't as rich, funny or popular as anyone else. During when I was in Fifth Grade and towards the end I was hoping to get certificates (I did,) but even then she was a sour puss because her shitty EPI show got nothing.

This motivated her overworked workers to try harder, but I'd doubt they would get any awards. Because I think you shouldn't award behavior from a woman who had essentially told shit to people who were hoping to become successful, had her gaggle of cronies talk shit about Lackadaisy, basically ruined others in an attempt to seem bigger.

She wasn't "in a bad mood" that day. She was pissed because her show didn't get jack shit, I forgot to make this post earlier when I did, because I keep fucking forgetting but here it is.

WARNING FOR BLOOD ON SOME PANELS

Lackadaisy's color scheme and lighting analysis Pt.1

A thing that many people have already noticed in the Lackadaisy comic, though intrigues me very much is the color palette changes. You see, in the beginning of the comic, we have a soft sepia, but when the Pig Farmer's raid happens, the soft ambiance gradually darkens to expose the tension and character's feelings better. (This can be considered as the lighting of the night time, too.)

By the end of Volume One, the light colors are back, though the readers are aware of the hidden climate, seeing the car window full of bullet holes in the background (Not necessarily related to the raid, but general gang violence).

At Lackadaisy Demurral and Lackadaisy Hamstring, they both darken, making us, the viewers, focused, so we pay better attention. We get to see Mitzi's attempts to keep the Speakeasy functioning (Although not so strong, unfortunately) along with a small, yet essential piece of Mordecai's plans working as one of the Marigold's, frantically unraveling every piece of information he can find at his reach (Which is in fact, quite important to the story as it goes on).

Jumping to Lackadaisy Briar-patch and Lackadaisy Mephistopheles, Mitzi and Sedgewick sit in a generally dark room, as a single sun ray shines through the upper window, hitting them both as Mitzi discusses her proposal with Wick, reflecting the hope she has on that deal. In a way, he used to be her angel of salvation, but it did not take long for her attempts to go downhill.

When Mitzi goes to Zib in Lackadaisy Mystique, there is a light behind her, full of moths. I'd like to say this represents their relationship in some sort of way. Moths follow the moonlight, Mitzi is Zib's light. He loves the light so much he gets hurt because of it. Mitzi, on the other way, used to be the moonlight, she was everything he cared for. But now, she is artificial, damaging the one who follows her.

We can also see this lighting metaphor in Lackadaisy Blood-money. Zib looks up at her right after being hit by the same. The remains flicker ever sightly behind Mitzi in the form of a streetlamp. Slowly yet, desperately, she is rapidly transforming onto what her husband was, trying her best to take his place in this cruel world of crime. Zib is aware of it, it pains him to know that once the light that shone the musician a path became cold, artificial and careless unless for interest. He needs that money, but at what cost? Watch Mitzi lose everything she had. Her money, her happiness, her husband, her soul. I see the streetlamp Mitzi walks forward to as a sorrowful representation of her dead husband, Atlas. The fact that had he had done dirty work multiple times on his career is what Mitzi is transforming onto. Zib knows the origin of all the blood money he received, but now having Mitzi as the giver is painful. Yet, there is nothing he can do about it. She sacrificed everything to become an empty shell of what Atlas once was, trapped in the delusion doing so will save his business, almost entirely dead, like Mitzi's and Zib's relationship, along the once successful band, destined to drift away to the country, featuring the loss of their star; Mary Ellen.

If you’re willing he will bring you down to the lackadaisy lounge and introduce you to everyone

Freckles a bit suspicious of you at first- why would someone like you be interested in Rocky?

But he warms up to you as you ditch you upper class facade and start to dance with Rocky

Your laughter mixing together as you enjoy the moment with each other

When you see the state of his car, you’re shocked and slightly depressed at the state of it- so you secretly get it repaired fully behind his back-

You tell him you’re just repairing the windows

You’re not you’re getting it fully done up

So when you tell him, his cars ready and you go with him to see it

He 100% breaks down into tears

He just can’t believe that you’re being so nice and loving to him

Takes him a while to calm down but when he climbs inside and takes you for a ride

He honestly starts to imagine the rest of his life with you

(The cactus is part of the package deal I’m afraid)

Lackadaisy

Been wanting to share/talk a bit about the Lackadaisy Backerkit project currently going on, especially because they just hit $1M in funding and I just think it's a really cool project. When I was reading through some of the info surrounding why they're going this route, they mention that they were actually in talks with studios to get an animated Lackadaisy show made after the success of the pilot (similar to what's going on with Hazbin Hotel). This was one of the initial goals of the pilot as well: to have something they could shop around to studios.

However, in light of the current treatment of animation by major studios (they reference HBO locking away some of their animated series) they've elected to go independent—a path which also allows them to retain complete ownership and keep on their current team of actors and animators. They are still limited by independent funding, but with the ongoing success of the Backerkit and the pilot, it seems like they're doing well in that regard???

It's just really cool to see this rise of 2D animated series finding a way to do their thing through non-traditonal means, and in this era where we're essentially at war with companies for the rights of creatives, it's nice to see independent projects finding success and support. AI is running rampant, series are getting shelves, workers of all trades are getting overworked and underpaid, but people are still getting large projects made and their teams compensated. Lackadaisy is of course far from the first indie animated series, but it's definitely a product of the current state of animation which I'm excited to see. I hope this season finds success when it launches and I hope other projects like this find success in independence.

Long story short, the successful funding of Lackadaisy season 1 makes me feel hopeful about the future of animation especially in terms of new ways for indie creators to succeed. If you are interested in supporting the project, check out the Backerkit:

went looking through my mdp and psd files and found some cute unfinished gems! idk if i'll finish some of these, but i don't want them to be hidden away forever.

commentary about each pic under the cut because i love to yap:

first, we have an unfinished sketch of beetlejuice, but if he was in lackadaisy, a wonderful webcomic by tracy butler! ( @lackadaisycats ) his lore is that he's lydia's very weird but loyal bodyguard. speaking of, next to it is lackadaisy lydia deetz! her outfit is directly based off of a real life 1920s teen girl dress, but with a gothic twist (the original dress was a bright yellow, which lydia would rather die than be caught in!). i based the coloring style after the initial animated lackadaisy design sheets (which you can find in the lackadaisy essentials book). lydia's lackadaisy lore is that she's the daughter of a very rich businessman (charles), yearning for a more exciting life, especially after the tragic death of her mother.

next, we have a cute lil sketch of my personal design of maria. i added a widdle baby shadow so maria wouldn't be lonely hehe. maria's outfit is directly inspired by 1970s feminine teen wear! i think she would slay in bell bottoms.

after that, we have a sketch of pink diamond with a couple personal twists. i gave her a small ruffle collar and added some extra fluff to her skirt thingy.

and then we have my oc gibson in the world of welcome home, a beautiful art project by clown! ( @partycoffin ) gibson is a rainbow monster. not sure what emily and the rest of the gang would be, but i can see lucian being a star like sally. i tried to mimic the ink concept art found on the welcome home website.

down below we have a sketch of my designs of adam and barbara maitland! i tried to give them a height difference, with adam being constructed of rectangular shapes and barbara of circular shapes. this does feel like them when they were a little younger (perhaps teens?), bc barbara's outfit feels rather 80s.

and finally, a sketch dump of a new toonsona i was daydreaming about! she is a wacky hybrid of a bat and rabbit.
