Paintings by Josefa Teixidor, also known as Pepita Teixidor (1875-1914). Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Josefa Teixidor is considered the best flower painter in the Catalan Modernist movement, an art movement where flowers and nature were very present. She was celebrated during her life, and she was chosen as one of the three artist who would represent Catalonia in the Universal Exhibition held in Paris in 1900, together with Ramon Casas and Santiago Rusiñol.

Despite the recognition of her work, at the time women weren't usually allowed to exhibit their work in art galleries. Josefa Teixidor, together with other Catalan women artists of the time like Lluïsa Vidal, Visitación Ubach, Antònia Farreras, and Maria Lluïsa Güell, fought for the right of women to exhibit their art in Barcelona. Her success allowed her to exhibit her work here and also in France. She was also involved in the Catalan feminist magazine Feminal, that gave support to and published about the work of women artists, scientists and industrials.

She was awarded both in Catalonia and in France. Soon after her early death at 39 years old, she became the first woman who was neither a saint nor a queen to have a statue dedicated to her in Barcelona, Catalonia's capital city. (Even nowadays, Barcelona only has 14 statues of women who aren't saints nor queens, and that is including fictional characters. For comparison, Barcelona has at least 168 statues of real men in that category).

Sadly, most of her work is owned by private collectors, only the three paintings included in this post are owned by a museum (MNAC). However, MNAC owns a huge collection and exhibits only a fraction of it, and none of Josefa Teixidor's works are displayed.

While making this post, it was difficult to find images of her work in good quality, because for some reason MNAC didn't have her works uploaded to their online catalogue. I sent them a message about it, and they answered the next day with the three works uploaded on their website (many things can be achieved by complain at the right people!). I hope making these paintings publicly available, together with this post, will make Josefa Teixidor more present in our minds. Sadly, she has been forgotten by most of society, while her male contemporaries like Rusiñol and Casas are still among the most famous artists of all times in our country. When we think of Modernist painters, from now on I hope we also think of Josefa Teixidor.

Notes

Everybody is all smiles for the group picture, from heroes to villains and everything in-between. Even characters who were otherwise sticks in the mud like Hank genuinely smile for the picture. Villains such as Muntz, de la Cruz, Lotso, Thunderclap and his gang, Syndrome, Evelyn, Randall, Waternoose, Hopper, Skinner, and Ercole, as much of evil psychopaths they were, are seen tenderly and respectfully singing along. Even Sid, who was a massive bully to Hannah, is seen giving her a kind brotherly embrace. Also, most movies’ main cast seem to be cramped together. Even the villains stand near their respective heroes, everyone in a healthy relationship with their families and loved ones are tenderly holding each other close, and many of the larger characters offer their bodies for the smaller ones.

Forky, Heimlich, Dory, Jack-Jack, Mater, WALL-E, and one of the triplets wave at the camera.

Dim and Wee Dingwall give the camera dopey smiles.

The egg-shaped bluebirds and the gawky bird stand perched above the entrance. The bluebirds are happy to have the gawky bird with them, a far cry from how they treated him in their short.

Sulley carries Boo tenderly in his arms. Helen does the same to Jack-Jack, as do Presto with Alec, Carl and Russell with Kevin’s babies, Elinor and Fergus with their triplet sons, Embarrassment with Envy, Massimo with Machiavelli, and Izzy with Sox.

Terri attempts to dance before his other half stops him.

Hank carries Marlin, Dory, and Nemo in a coffee pot.

Voyd and Abby giddily bounce in place, clearly the most excited for the photo.

Linguini carries Remy while Colette holds Django and Emile.

WALL-E and EVE hold the umbrellas from The Blue Umbrella.

HAN-S still can’t stay still, shaking aggressively as the photo is taken.

Kevin and her babies take the time to mimic Carl once again.

Maudie and the Clan Dingwall hunk share a loving look.

Young Macintosh flexes his pecs while giving the camera a cocky smile, the same type of smile given by characters like Terry, Darby, and Clod.

The Witch has her Crow standing perched on her shoulder.

Being stationary volcanoes, Uka and Lele are unable to leave their photo. Thankfully, they have Thunderclap and his gang to hold it so they can be in the group picture.

Nostalgia sticks her head out from behind Embarrassment, clearly hiding from the other emotions.

Riley, Grace, and Bree all carry Knick together while Riley’s parents carry the Miami and Florida knick knacks, Val and the Fire Hawks carry the Egypt, Jamaica, Palm Springs, Israel, and Death Valley knick knacks, and Coach Roberts carries Sunny Atlantis in her fish bowl.

A Shadow, a King & a Cave

Everyone has already heard the story, the Handsome Monkey King wrecks havoc in heaven after being invited to live with the gods only to be deceived, humiliated and then burned by them, but when he makes them pay, even managing to almost dethrone the Jade Emperor himself! He is imprisoned under Five-Finger Mountain, rendered almost completely immobile and forced to eat iron and drink molten copper, remaining alone, until the end of time or until the gods decide that he has been imprisoned long enough.

He had already come to terms with the fact that he was going to be lonely for all that time, no one had showed up to save him before and he was pretty sure no one was coming now, that’s exactly the reason why he was so confused with the moving shadow that started coming from time to time to the inside of the mountain. Now, he wasn’t a fool, he gained some cool powers a while ago that let him see through lies and stuff like that, so he knew his mind wasn’t playing tricks on him with the moving shadow, it was definitely a demon. A wary one. Not even the servants who force-fed him had noticed it.

Months passed and the shadow seemed to come more and more often, perhaps more confident knowing that the prisoner could barely move a hand, which was a small relief for Wukong since that shadow seemed to be the only entertainment he would have in centuries. So, without much to lose, he decided to start talking to them.

It started with a simple greeting, he ultimately wanted more but was afraid to scare away the cautious shadow, though this took the demon by surprise anyway, getting fluffed up like an angry cat and disappearing from his sight. Wukong tried to stop him, but evidently he couldn't get very far. His only chance to have a buddy in his prison ruined by a damn hello. Just what one needs after a hundred years of loneliness.

But his sorrow would be relatively short, since only a few days passed when the shadow demon returned, this time with a peace offering, a peach. Seeing it, the King's face lit up completely, it seemed that all that time he had spent eating iron and swallowing copper no longer mattered, he could finally taste something other than metal, he had never been so happy to see a peach in his life... so it was very disappointing when the shadow left the fruit on the floor, right in front of him… where he couldn't reach it…

So fucking close and he couldn't even touch the damn fruit. Wukong had had enough, he was lonely, he hadn't spoken to anyone in a century, he hadn't eaten anything edible in years, he couldn't move and when he was so close to having even a little taste of what felt like freedom, HE CAN'T EVEN TOUCH IT.

La prisión del Rey y la Sombra que lo acompaña

Ya todos conocen la historia, el Apuesto Rey Mono crea caos en el cielo tras ser invitado a vivir con los dioses solo para ser engañado, humillado y después quemado por ellos, pero cuando él los hace pagar, ¡casi logrando destronar al mismísimo Rey de Jade! es encerrado bajo la montaña Wuwang, dejándolo casi completamente inmóvil y forzándolo a comer pepitas de hierro y beber cobre fundido, quedándose solo, hasta el fin de los tiempos o hasta que los dioses decidan que ya estuvo encerrado el tiempo suficiente.

Él ya había aceptado el hecho de que iba a estar solo durante todo ese tiempo, nadie había llegado a salvarlo antes y estaba bastante seguro de que nadie vendría ahora, esa es exactamente la razón por la que estaba tan confundido con una dichosa y movediza sombra que comenzaba a aparecer de vez en cuando dentro de la montaña. Ahora, él no era tonto, obtuvo algunos poderes geniales hace un tiempo que le permitían ver a través de mentiras y cosas así, así que sabía que su mente no le estaba jugando una mala pasada con esa sombra, definitivamente era un demonio. Uno un tanto cauteloso, ni los sirvientes que le alimentaban lo habían notado.

Pasaron los meses y la sobra parecía venir más y mas a menudo, tal vez más confiada al saber que el prisionero apenas y podía mover una mano, lo que fue un pequeño gran alivio para Wukong ya que esa sombra parecía ser el único entretenimiento que tendría en siglos. Así que, sin mucho que perder, decidió empezar a hablarle.

Empezó con un simple saludo, él en definitiva quería más pero temía espantar a la cautelosa sombra, pero esto tomó tan de sorpresa al demonio que se esponjó cómo un gato enojado y desapareció de su vista. Wukong intentó detenerlo, pero evidentemente no logró llegar muy lejos. Su única oportunidad de tener a un compañero en su prisión arruinada por un maldito saludo. Justo lo que uno necesita tras cien años de soledad.

Pero su pesar le duraría relativamente poco, pues solo pasaron unos días cuando el demonio de la sombra volvió, esta vez con una ofrenda de paz, un durazno. Al verlo la cara del Rey se iluminó por completo, parecía que todo ese tiempo que había pasado comiendo hierro y tragando cobre ya no importaban, por fin podría saborear otra cosa que no fuera un metal, nunca había estado tan feliz de ver un durazno en su vida… por lo que fue muy decepcionante cuando la sombra dejó el fruto en el piso, justo en frente de él, donde no lo podía alcanzar.

Tan jodidamente cerca y no podía ni tocar la maldita fruta. Wukong ya estaba harto, estaba solo, no había hablado con nadie en un siglo, no había comido nada comestible en años, so podía moverse y al momento de estar tan cerca de tener aunque sea una probadita de lo que se sentía cómo libertad, Y NO PUEDE NI TOCARLA.

Homemade Yogurt Sponge-Cake SPA/ENG

@cannibal-in-a-can requested the recipe for this so here it is. (I was already planning on sharing it but I got excited that someone asked for it :] )

Additionally to what's in the recipe, there are elements that you can change (you could do this with almost any baking recipe), for example: you can use candied fruits instead of chocolate chips, or use brown sugar instead of the common sugar. You can put a little bit more of sugar than what the recipe indicates if you prefer it more sweet or on the contrary put a bit less.

The important elements of this cake (and most cakes) are the yogurt, eggs, yeast, flour, oil and carrot. You can add extracts, if you are celiac you perfectly can change the wheat flour with cornflour or rice flour (the rice one's a little better but with corn also taste good).

ESPAÑOL/SPANISH

Bizcocho de Yogurt

Ingredientes:

Yogurt (limón/ natural) - 1 (usar recipiente para medir ingredientes)

Huevos - 3

Impulsor (levadura) - 15g

Harina - 3 medidas

Azúcar - 1 medida

Aceite de girasol - 1 medida

Ralladura de zanahoria - 2 medidas (o solo échale una zanahoria)

Pepitas de chocolate (opcional) - 1 medida

Elaboración:

Batir los huevos con el azúcar.

Añadir el yogurt y mezclar.

Añadir el aceite y mezclar.

Añadir la harina tamizada con el impulsor y mezclar bien.

Añadir la ralladura (y las pepitas) y mezclar.

Engrasar y enharinar el molde, verter la mezcla en el molde.

Precalentar el horno 180º C (360º F) hornear 30-40 mins.

Nota adicional:

Puedes usar yogurt griego, pero recomendaría añadir 1-2 cucharaditas de limón o extracto de vainilla.

You can use greek yogurt but I would recommend adding 1-2 teaspoons of lemon or vanilla extract.

I’ve said this before but James knows how to dance pretty good, like, really good, he’s the kind of guy who knows how to dance cumbia like a pro, yk twirl and everything and also he’s the kind of person who dances with the tías y abuelas en las fiestas.

That being said, James dancing quebradita is a force to be reckoned with, Regulus made the mistake to accept James’ invitation to dance it once and James fucking throw him in the air like a rag doll lmaooo

His favorite chips are Chips fuego even if se enchila every time he eats them

He was one of those kids who always played soccer at recess and came home with his white shirt stained with dirt and red splashes of paupau jajajaj

Effie is a big fan of la virgencita and therefore James always has an estampita in his wallet (next to a pic of regulus lol)

When he is sad he listens to la gata bajo la lluvia on repeat 💀 I said what I said

in interviews paul ecke iii keeps making baffling comparisons to other industries/corporations like intel and the auto industry ("All they have to do is make good cars that don't break down. Mine is a far more complicated business.")

this site claims that juan balme assigned the scientific name euphorbia pulcherrima in the 1600s (binomial species names were pioneered in the 1750s)

one article claims that the aztec winter festival that used poinsettias is "fiesta de la veintena" ("festival of the 20th"????) (again one must assume that this is. not the precolonial name). this (shockingly) does not seem to be the name of an actual event. it seems like they just googled "aztec festival" and found something about the festivals on the 20th (i.e. last) days of the aztec months (cf. "la fiesta de la veintena de quecholli"--ie the festival of the 20th of quecholli) and decided to just... roll with it and assume nobody would fact-check or want further details??

wikipedia's citation for the claim about the legend of pepita/maria (reference 29 on the poinsettia page at the time of writing) is this article, which. literally does not mention the legend at all

i went through juan balme giraud's bibliography (incidentally a couple articles in that list seem to be nonextant save for being cited in other publications) and there sure is no mention of poinsettias, but he did write about how hawthorn tea makes you piss hard

im obsessed with this vox video on the history of poinsettias where they parrot the claim that franciscan friars grew poinsettias for nativity scenes and illlustrate this by. showing a nativity painting and having poinsettias manifest around it. because there are no actual depictions of the friars doing this. because it isnt true

according to wikipedia "Nothing is known about pollination in wild poinsettias" (wiki's source) which makes the "grew through a crack in willdenow's greenhouse" thing even funnier

Brownies de chocolate

Cuando tenemos ganas de un postre, habrá quienes piensen en alguno que tenga chocolate, y es que existen una gran variedad de postres que se pueden hacer con este ingrediente. Pero ninguno es como el brownie, así que si aún no sabes cómo hacerlo aquí te traigo la receta de este rico postre que les gusta a todos!

Ingredientes

200g de chocolate negro

110g de mantequilla

4 huevos

120g de azúcar

1 cucharada de esencia de vainilla

85g de harina

Bicarbonato

Nueces

Procedimiento:

En un bol colocamos el chocolate y la mantequilla. Posteriormente lo metemos al microondas a temperatura media para que se vaya derritiendo (recuerda que si no tienes microondas lo puedes realizar a baño María). Una vez derretido lo lo mezclamos muy bien.

Ponemos los 4 huevos y el azúcar en otro bol. Después agregamos la harina y la cucharadita de bicarbonato. Debemos mezclar muy bien.

Como siguiente agregamos el chocolate que hemos derretido junto con la mantequilla y el toque de vainilla. Seguimos mezclando.

Ahora debemos agregar las nueces o el topping que tú desees.

En un recipiente de horno ponemos un poco de mantequilla y harina para que no se nos pegue el brownie.

Incorporamos la mezcla y cubrimos con unas pepitas y unas nueces (opcional). Introducimos al horno durante 30-35 minutos a 180º.

Una vez pasado el tiempo, retiramos con cuidado el brownie. Y dejamos enfriar por unos minutos.
