Marta Eggerth in Die Czardasfürstin (1934)

Marta Eggerth in Die Czardasfürstin (1934) by Truus, Bob & Jan too! Via Flickr: German collectors card in the series 'Vom Werden deutscher Filmkunst - Der Tonfilm', album no. 11, picture no. 137. Photo: Ufa / Ross Verlag. Marta Eggerth in Die Czardasfürstin/The Csardas Princess (Georg Jacoby, 1934). Hungarian-born singer and actress Márta Eggerth (1912-2013) maintained a global career for over 70 years. She was the popular and talented star of 30 German and Austrian operetta films of the 1930s. Many of the 20th century's most famous operetta composers, including Franz Lehár, Fritz Kreisler, Robert Stolz, Oscar Straus, and Paul Abraham, composed works especially for her. After the rise of the Nazis, she continued her career with her partner Jan Kiepura in the US. Márta (or Martha) Eggerth's was born in Budapest in 1912. Her mother, a dramatic coloratura soprano, dedicated herself to her daughter, who was called a 'Wunderkind'. At the age of 11 she made her theatrical debut in the operetta Mannequins. Marta began singing the demanding coloratura repertoire by composers including Rossini, Meyerbeer, Offenbach, and Johann Strauss II. Soon she was hailed as Hungary's 'national idol'. She performed at the Hungarian state opera in Budapest. Eggerth made her film debut in Budapest in such silent films as Csak egy kislány van a világon/There Is Only One Girl in the World (Belá Gaál, 1929). While still a teenager, Márta Eggerth embarked on a tour of Denmark, Holland and Sweden before arriving in Vienna at the invitation of Emmerich Kalman. Kalman had invited her to understudy Adele Kern, the famous coloratura of the Vienna State Opera, in his operetta Das Veilchen von Montmarte (The Violet of Montmarte). Eventually she took over the title role to great critical acclaim after Kern suddenly became indisposed. Next she performed the role of Adele in Max Reinhardt's famous 1929 Hamburg production of Die Fledermaus (The Bat). At the age of 17, she was perhaps the youngest singer ever to undertake this part. Her silvery soprano voice made her in the following years a popular star of the operetta. Marta Eggerth's film career really career took off with the German sound film Bräutigamswitwe/Let's Love and Laugh (Richard Eichberg, 1931) co-starring Georg Alexander. The success of the film resulted in international fame. Her German film debut was soon followed by more film operettas like Trara um Liebe/Trumpet Call of Love (Richard Eichberg, 1931) and Moderne Mitgift/Modern Dowry (E.W. Emo, 1932). Franz Léhar composed the music for Es war einmal ein Walzer/Once There Was a Waltz (Victor Janson, 1932), especially for Eggerth. In the silver age of the operetta Márta Eggerth starred in numerous successful film operettas and musical comedies as the cheeky, captivating girl, but she also played more tragic roles. To her great successes belong Das Blaue vom Himmel/The Blue from the Sky (Victor Janson, 1932), Leise flehen meine Lieder/Lover Divine (Willi Forst, 1933), Unfinished Symphony (Anthony Asquith, Willi Forst, 1934), Der Zarewitsch (Victor Janson, 1933), Die Czardasfürstin/The Csardas Princess (Georg Jacoby, 1934), Die ganze Welt dreht sich um Liebe/The World's in Love (Viktor Tourjansky, 1935), and Das Schloss in Flandern/The Castle in Flanders (Géza von Bolváry, 1936). Critics praised her musical abilities, but also her nuanced acting. In favour of her film work, she appeared less and less on stage. On the set of Mein Herz ruft nach dir/My Heart Calls You (Carmine Gallone, 1934), Marta Eggerth fell in love with the young Polish tenor and film star Jan Kiepura. The couple married in 1936, and they were the most dazzling Liebespaar (Love Pair) of the European cinema. Together they starred in Zauber der Boheme/The Charm of La Boheme (Géza von Bolváry, 1937), based on motives from Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème. They caused a sensation wherever they appeared. But the political situation became more and more uncomfortable for her in Austria, being a foreigner and of Jewish descent. In 1938, Jan Kiepura and Márta Eggerth fled Austria after its annexation by the Nazis. They first settled down in the South of France, and later in the USA. Eggerth was signed by the Schubert Theater to appear on Broadway in Richard Rodgers' musical Higher and Higher. She subsequently signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Hollywood, but she only performed in two MGM musicals. At the side of Judy Garland, she appeared in For Me and My Gal (Busby Berkeley, 1942), and Presenting Lily Mars (Norman Taurog, 1943). Together with her husband, she returned to the theatre, and they first starred on the operatic stage in La Bohème to rave reviews. Then they had a huge, three-year long success with Franz Léhar's operetta Die lustige Witwe/The Merry Widow, with Robert Stolz conducting and George Balanchine as choreographer. They would eventually perform The Merry Widow more than 200 times, in five languages throughout Europe and America. After the war, Márta Eggerth and Jan Kiepura returned to France. They toured through Europe and starred in such films as La Valse Brilliante/Brilliant waltz (Jean Boyer, 1948) in France and Das Land des Lächelns/Land of Smiles (Hans Deppe, Erik Ode, 1952) in Germany. Eggerth wasn't able to gain a foothold again in the German cinema, and would further only appear in Frühling in Berlin/Spring in Berlin (Arhur Maria Rabenalt, 1957) starring Sonja Ziemann. In the 1950s she became American citizen, but her connection to Europe remained. In 1954 Eggerth and Kiepura brought The Merry Widow to London's Palace Theatre and they often toured through Germany with The Merry Widow and other productions. After Jan Kiepura died in 1966, Eggerth stopped singing for several years. Finally, persuaded by her mother, she decided to revive her career. In the 1970s she began to make regular television appearances, and to actively perform concerts in Europe. In 1979, she was awarded the Filmband in Gold for her longtime achievements in the German cinema. In 1984, she returned to the American stage. She co-starred in the Tom Jones/Harvey Schmidt musical Colette opposite Diana Rigg in Seattle and Denver, and later in Stephen Sondheim's Follies in Pittsburgh. In 1999 Eggerth had a comeback appearance on German television as a chamber singer in the episode Nie wieder Oper/Never Opera Again of the popular crime series Tatort. In 2005 she brought out a new album, Marta Eggerth: My Life My Song, with recordings from throughout her career. In 2007 the Silent Film Festival of Pordenone in Italy presented one of her first Hungarian films, but the then 95-year old star was not able to attend. The reason: she had to perform at a concert in New York! Mártha Eggerth always stayed an advocate of the operetta: "In opera, everybody dies. In operetta, everybody is flirtatious", she said of her favourite art form. Marta Eggerth owned an 18-story apartment building in Rye, New York, where she died 26 December 2013. She was 101. Sources: Anne Midgette (The Washington Post), Thomas Staedeli (Cyranos), Filmportal.de, Wikipedia and IMDb. For more cards of this series, check out our album Vom Werden Deutscher Filmkunst.

I was tagged by the wonderful Maya aka @nicoloalkaysani to list thirteen songs I’ve been listening to nonstop lately. Which is a good chance to show how...obsessive my music listening habits are! Be warned, I am known for listening to the same thing endlessly.
Mahmood - Rapide. This is the song that made me fall in love with Mahmood! Alessandro Mahmoud is an Egyptian-Italian singer who was ROBBED at the 2019 Eurovision, and I think the most analogous comparison is the “Italian Sam Smith” but they’re also different y’know?
Mahmood - Soldi. This is Mahmood’s Eurovision entry I LOVE MAHMOOD
Mahmood - Barrio. You see what I mean when I say I hyperfixate on music.
Charlie Charles, Sfera Ebbasta, Mahmood, Fabri Fibra - Calipso. I was here for Mahmood no surprises.
Dame Joan Sutherland - Rigoletto “Caro nome”. This is the aria from Act 1 of Verdi’s opera Rigoletto. Oh! The incomparable Dame Joan Sutherland. Caro nome is what I wrote my entire TOG fanfic to. The coloratura!! This is Peak Opera for me. There are so few cases where it gets better than this. This song is about the experience of your first love, the infatuation of a first crush, the stirrings of new love and AKSJDJDHHSG it’s just soooooo good, especially when Dame Joan Sutherland gets to the soaring heights of the coloratura (the ah-ah-ah portion)
Maria Callas - Rigoletto “Caro nome”. The incomparable Maria Callas! My life has never been the same since I was introduced to Maria Callas’s O Mio Babbino Caro. I slightly prefer Dame Joan’s version, but in keeping with my style of listening to a whole series of “same same but different” how could I ever leave Maria Callas off?
Giuseppe Verdi - Aida Act III introduction. THE BEST STRINGS OF ANY OPERA. THE MELODIC FLUTE LINE THAT TEASES WITH TRILLS AND LEAPS LIKE A GENIE FROM A LAMP. (Ok I stole the second part from Met Opera notes) This was also on heavy rotation when I wrote my Joe/Nicky fanfic. The strings build in pianissimo layers and THE WHOLE THING SOUNDS LIKE MAGIC.
Vittorio Grigolo - La Boheme “Che gelida manina” THIS SONG IS ALSO ABOUT LOVE I had the privilege of watching Vittorio Grigolo sing this in the Met Opera staging of La Boheme, which I also inexplicably love despite the fact that I kinda hate Rent the musical, and Rent is basically a La Boheme ripoff. Go figure. Maybe one day I’ll even write a Joe/Nicky opera AU (but is it an AU when they could plausibly have been friends with Mozart/Verdi/etc)
Jordi Savall - Kouroukanfouga. Look if I can make my fics have audio, this is the song that plays when ~spoiler~ Nicky and Joe meet again at the end of my fic. This song is actually about the constitution of the Mali Empire created after the Battle of Krina in 1235, and it’s found on an album about Ibn Battuta, the Muslim Berber-Moroccan voyager who traveled extremely widely (analogous figures would be Marco Polo or Zheng He). I love the levity of the opening bars in this song, and how it evokes a sense of travel. Jordi Savall is a major figure in reproducing medieval music and you should definitely include him on any Nicky/Joe playlist imo.
Underworld - And I Will Kiss. This song changed my life. First heard at the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony, accompanying a performance where pristine green pastures are torn up with the advent of the Industrial Revolution. One day if I still have the stamina for it I will write Industrial Revolution Joe/Nicky because I have so many Socialist™️ feels about it.
Underworld - Caliban’s Dream. Ethereal soprano singing and!! Alex Trimble of Two Door Cinema Club whom I love. This was for the lighting of the Olympic torch at the 2012 London Olympics, and the part of the song that invokes “come together” preceded the lighting of the torch, which was one of the most memorable Olympic torch lightings (the only other one I care about being Cathy Freeman in Sydney 2000)
Rahim AlHaj - NPR tiny desk concert. Sublime. I am currently on a major oud kick and Rahim AlHaj is a virtuouso oud musician and composer. The oud is the granddaddy of all stringed instruments and also I am plotting a fic where one of Joe’s ex boyfriends is an oud player now you know why I’m on this massive oud kick heh
Recomposed by Max Richter - Vivaldi Spring I. This piece is for the second most recent fic I wrote, for The Untamed. This is the wedding song for my modern AU Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. I have a lot of things to say about that fic but this song encapsulates all of it.
That’s it haha I guess I’m not gonna tag anyone but!! Please do the meme if this inspires you to say something about your playlist. I could talk a lot more about these pieces bc I basically made a “fic inspiration” playlist and skdjjdhd ok I’ll stop bc I might be the only person reading this anyways.

7 comfort films tag
Tagged by @august-iswriting, thank you! Also go check out his shop with loads of cool designs. The profits are going to BLM. https://teespring.com/stores/corner-store-of-righteousness
So for this tag you just pick out seven films that make you feel nice! These will be overwhelmingly musicals and disney films because I am a 24 year old child.
1) The Sound Of Music
Tumblr media
This is the very definition of comfort film for me! It’s a very important film to my family, but even aside from that, its just one of my favourite films ever (maybe my number 1 favourite). It’s so sweet, so pure, Julie Andrews is a queen, I love the music and ahhh I just love it so much <3
2) RENT
Tumblr media
This film! It’s so long but so good! I want to adopt all of these characters and look after them. I listen to this soundtrack constantly. Rent, Out Tonight, La Vie Boheme, and What You Own get me hyped, Santa Fe and I’ll Cover You makes me dance around my flat, and basically every other song makes me emotional.
3) Tangled
Tumblr media
This film is so funny, and a total comfort film for me. Also my boyfriend reminds me a lot of Flynn Ryder. Also Pascal is the perfect comic relief sidekick (I’m sorry Olaf, I love you but sometimes you’re annoying). The songs are great, and the whole I See The Light lantern scene makes me cry.
4) Finding Nemo
Tumblr media
“Just keep swimming” <3
This is probably the film my boyfriend and I quote the most when we’re being silly (which is most times). Such a beautiful story, great characters, and a film I can rewatch dozens of times and not get sick of! You really feel like you’re going along with Marlin and Dory’s journey, and I love the dynamics explored with their relationship, as well as the father/son relationship.
5) Monsters Inc
Tumblr media
Another Pixar classic. This film makes me laugh and cry and feel all the feelings. The dymanic between Sully, Mike and Boo is so great, the plot is amazing and I love the twist. Also just so, so, many bonus points for concept. Explaining the universal kid worry of a monster hiding in your cupboard via a hilarious film is such a great concept.
6) Coco
Tumblr media
Third Pixar film on the list, and also the newest film on this list. Coco blew me away when I saw it in the cinema, and blows me away every time I see it since. The animation is beautiful and the plot and characters are compelling and heartwarming. The depiction of memory loss is achingly raw. I learned so much about Mexican culture watching this film. As an outsider, it really feels like a love letter to Mexican culture, and I was really pleased to discover that the response from Mexican people was very positive. Miguel is so relatable, I adore Hector, and I really appreciate the overall message of this film, which is almost the opposite to the “do whatever it takes” message of many other films. Bonus points for being super quotable (my boyfriend and I yell “where’s my femur hector?” every time one of us can’t find something)
7) Perks of Being a Wallflower (same @august-iswriting!)
Tumblr media
This film came out when I was in between the ages of Charlie and Sam/Patrick, and I felt like I needed it. I related so much to all three of the main characters. This film makes me feel more alive, like it wakes me up? I love the beautiful and meaningful quotes. It also makes me cry. Do all the films on this so-called “comfort film” list make me cry? I think so ooops.
When making this list, I was very conscious that my picks are overwhelmingly white casted films. That’s partly hollywoods fault for not casting more diversely, but it’s also my fault for not consuming more media made by or starring POC. It’s something I have made an active choice to do in my reading over the past few years, and now I am realising I need to think more about the films I watch too. Having said that, I very rarely have the attention span to sit through an entire film, so 99% of the films I watch are ones I’ve watched before so I don’t have to worry about falling asleep ten minutes in, or I can have them on as I wander between rooms doing housework.
Tagging @mjmnorwood, @alicewestwater and @laughtracksonata and anybody else who might want to do it!

Reams and reams of copy had been written about her. She was a recluse, a saint upon a cinema hill. I Remember that there was a title writer on the lot who had been a hardboiled newspaper man. Girls like Gish, he boasted, were just a lot of first class bologna. The only real women were the kind who knew life. He had not met Miss Lillian when he made these statements but when he did, he assured us, he would not be a fool like the rest. And then he was given the job of writing titles for her picture “La Boheme.” He went to confer with her and came away from the interview with a mist before his eyes, his brain fogged by the cobwebs of beauty. The Little People had got him and when I asked him what he thought of Gish now, he stuttered, “Why she’s . . . why, she’s . . . she’s what men think women are before they know they have bodies.” That’s what Lillian Gish did to men. Frail, delicate, her pale blue eyes wan with suffering, her soft, blonde hair about her head like the radiance from a winter sun, her fragile hands traced with tiny blue veins and lying in her lap like spring flowers—she was the greatest siren in Hollywood.

▼ ABOUT ▼
A somber character taken out of an Edgar Allan Poe poem, Pygmlo is a grim man, often walking around like a specter.
He is not the friendliest troll around, not caring much about people in general, neither their cast nor social status.
He only seems to care about Venter, his one true love, for whom he would do anything they asked.
Taking care of Venter is his greatest passion, Always making sure that they are in top condition. He is also fiercely possessive and protective over his quad and anyone that dares to place a single claw on them will suffer a painful dead.
Aside from taking care of Venter, Pygmlo also enjoys to bake and has a rather big sweet tooth for such a skinny man. Despite taking great lengths to keep Venter healthy, Pygmlo seems to have a deteriorating health as he often seems more tired and sleeps more.

BITTER- Angry with life and with a perpetual scowl on his face, there is no sunshine for this rainy cloud (Except Venter) Pygmlo is the Scrooge of the Jester Buds.
INDIFFERENT- The world could be burning around him and he wouldn't care less as long as Venter was safe.
CARING- Despite his coldness, he cares deeply for his loved ones. That being Venter. He lives to make them happy and to protect them from harm.
FATALISTIC- Definitely not the type of guy to cheer up the party, always expecting the worst outcome for everything and everyone.
OBSESSIVE -Pygmlo takes the care of his beloved to the next level and there is not stopping it any time soon.

Famous Muses & Girlfriends in Filmmaking Pt. 1
MUSE: Lillian Gish (full name Lillian Diana Gish)
Lillian was born on October 14th, 1893 in Springfield, OH to single mother and stage actress, Mary Gish. Lillian was most appropriately penned the ‘First Lady of American Cinema’ with her career spanning from the silent era to the digital era over seven decades. As adolescents, Lillian and her younger sister Dorothy would sell candy and popcorn at the local theater in East St. Louis, IL to make extra money, perform in community plays and later model part time. When she was 18, Lillian became best friends with fellow screen legend, Mary Pickford. It was Mary who got Lillian and Dorothy introduced to the heads of Biograph Studios in Los Angeles, CA, with instant success.
Mary also introduced the sisters to Hollywood heavyweight D.W. Griffith, a pioneer in screen directing and modern filmmaking technique. Although most associated with the director and actresses say it was obvious D.W. instantly favored Lillian, the older sister claimed in her 1969 memoir, The Movies, Mr. Griffith & Me, that he mistook her and Dorothy for twins. According to Lillian, during their first project together, An Unseen Enemy (1912), D.W. had Lillian in a red ribbon and Dorothy in a blue one to tell them apart. Evidently D.W. did notice the difference when he started casting Lillian as his female lead in groundbreaking silent films like The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), Broken Blossoms (1919) and Way Down East (1920).
Friends and colleagues pondered whether there was anything personal between the mentor and the protégé, as they were nearly always by each other’s side on sets. But Lillian consistently maintained they were strictly professional (plus he was like, 19 years older and married…). The legend goes that Lillian only ever referred to D.W. as ‘Mr. Griffith’ her whole life, but she’s also been quoted saying that in later years she sometimes did call him ‘David.’ D.W. liked Lillian so much that he hired his crew to work for Lillian on a film he greenlit just for her to experiment as a director. But once the production was over, Lillian told D.W. she wanted to focus on only acting and that directing was ‘a man’s job’ (girl…). She also denied there’s racism in The Birth of a Nation until the day she died because she respected him so much (girl… x2). After the two parted ways in the 1920s, D.W. later famously said that his career “all went downhill after Lillian left me.”
1926 would be the prime of Lillian’s popularity as a movie starlet when she signed to MGM and was cast as the star of La Boheme. Studio peer Marion Davies once threw her under the bus and revealed that Lillian acted like a diva during filming, and snubbed co-star John Gilbert for not being talented enough (ouch, lol). Despite the cold shoulder, John supposedly still had a big crush on Lillian and famously ruined many takes of their love scenes on purpose as an excuse to kiss her. She also dated film producer Charles Duell, who apparently didn’t take their break-up well and leaked all the dirty laundry of their relationships to tabloids (douche). Lillian was one of the few ladies of the old Hollywood era to never marry or have children, and one of the very few silent superstars to successfully crossover to ‘talkies.’ Shockingly, Lillian was only nominated for an Oscar once, Best Supporting Actress with the western Duel in the Sun (1946). She died only months before her 100th birthday in 1993, meaning Lillian lived to help shape the film industry and died right at the breakthrough of modern CGI (when will your faves, tbh??).
Fun fact: the title of the Smashing Pumpkins’ 1991 debut album, ‘Gish,’ is a direct reference to Lillian.

Debunking Opera Myths
Written by Katherine Goyder and Emma Ashton
Fat people, boring music, stuffy audiences. That’s what opera’s about, right?
Mmm… Not so much. Whilst opera might be an old art form, it has certainly grown with the times and in the last century has seen a massive leap into the world of technology. Still, when you tell someone you’re an opera singer, you’re often  met with a  face of confusion as if you were some sort of extinct breed that shouldn’t be walking around in 2016.
This week at WAAPA, we have begun rehearsals for our final production of the year, a brand new piece called ‘Opera! The Opera’. While we can’t give much away, we can reveal that the show centres around a man named Brian, who… well, let’s just say, isn’t the biggest fan of opera. While Brian’s story may take an unusual turn, he’s not that different to most reluctant operagoers. That’s why we decided this week would be the perfect time to debunk some all-too-common operatic myths! Perhaps you’ve never seen an opera before and are curious as to what the fuss is about? Or maybe you’re a seasoned opera fan or passionate student trying to explain to Uncle Bob exactly what it is that you study (for the fourth time)? Well read on as we uncover the truth about our favourite art form…
No, Phantom of the Opera is NOT opera.  This is a quite common myth and one I know that many have tried to debunk before. But Phantom of the Opera is actually a musical about an opera house, not an opera. Some opera singers get quite cranky with this comparison but hey, if you see Phantom of the Opera, get a taste for opera and decide to come along… The more the merrier!
I won’t understand it. We all know that a lot of operas are in foreign languages. From Italian, French, German, Russian etc. This language barrier can put people off coming to the opera and I get that: Who wants to sit there for 2-3 hours and not understand a word of what’s going on? But of course the power of technology helps you out here. Surtitles are given for audience members to understand the text. Also, the cliché   of ‘park and bark’ singing (aka standing there, singing and ‘emoting’) has  long been dead  and most productions these days place huge demands on singers in terms of acting and physicality.  You’re sure not to fall behind in the story when you have someone like Joyce Didonato going mad right in front of you.
Joyce Di Donato- Where shall I fly? (Händel) https://youtu.be/iOFHISqfwjk
It’s full of fat people. Nuh uh. Whilst the stereotypical opera singer is overweight and can barely hold themselves on stage, these days the opera stage is filled with gorgeous people (WHO HAVE INCREDIBLE VOICES!) like this…
… Need I say more?
It’s too expensive.  Depending on where you are in the world, opera tickets can vary at many different prices… But just like anywhere, if you keep your eyes open you can find a cheap seat! For anyone under the age of 30, most classical venues are looking for YOU as audiences and will be offering (very) discounted tickets! These will generally be advertised on Facebook or other places online!
You have to dress up. No! These days, your opera attire can be anything from a ball gown to a short and tee shirt. I would recommend following the “no shoes no shirt no service” rule, and I wouldn’t wear anything that you wouldn’t be able to wear out to a pub on St George’s Terrace… But there’s no need to suit up!
…Unless you really want to!
It’s elitist. Whilst the divas (and divos!) that come with this profession are still out there, they’re a dying breed. A lot of opera singers, conductors and managers these days do not think of their art form as elite: We just want to be given a fair go! We are inviting you to come see our shows by putting on new, exciting productions of works.  We are not an elite form – just a very old one!
It goes on too long. Whilst some operas go on forever (Hello Götterdämerung – 6 hours and 30 minutes) – most operas don’t! Operas are the original cinema so think of it in the way you might think of a film. Some are short and others feel like they may go on forever. Same thing applies to opera! Before going to an opera, you can check the running time on the website and plan your night accordingly. WA Opera performed Gianni Schicchi as apart Opera in the Park this year, and it only lasted an hour.
It’s not relevant. So you don’t think you relate to contracting tuberculosis and dying? Are you telling me you’re breasts HAVEN’T flown off? (It’s an opera… Don’t judge us). But in all honesty, the operas that we see on the main stages of theatres these days are there because of their relativity to modern society.
I won’t know any of the music. Thanks to the fact that a lot of this music is out of copyright infringement, you will have heard this music over and over again! Whether it be from that McDonald’s Ad, a  beer ad or your favourite scene from tv/movies, opera is all around you. I guarantee you will surprise yourself: you will have known this music all your life!
Opera isn’t for young people. What tends to be forgotten is that these works were written BY young people. Mozart died at the age of 33, which means that when he was writing most of his works, he was in his teens through to his late 20s. Puccini was 28 when La Boheme premiered. Bizet was 37 when Carmen was finished. With the exclusion of composers such as R. Strauss and G. Handel (who wrote bloody amazing music as well – just at an older age!), most composers who are writing operas are under the age of 40, relating to the younger demographics… They tell stories of young people and most of these characters are just trying to figure out how to adult. (I know I can relate to that!)
Funny opera singers https://youtu.be/ZHKb3HSKfbo
So hopefully this has helped you understand this wonderful art form… Or maybe you leave us even more confused! Whichever one it may be, don’t be afraid of opera! It’s really not a terrifying experience at all. What’s the worst that could happen? You might actually enjoy it!

Our Guide To The Perfect Road-Trip On The NSW Central Coast
Our Guide To The Perfect Road-Trip On The NSW Central Coast
Travel
by Sasha Gattermayr
Tumblr media
The glorious Bouddi Peninsula contains secluded beaches and plenty of nature walks! Photo – Nikki To for The Design Files.
Forget the sprawling Sydney metropolis, all anyone needs for the ultimate getaway in New South Wales is located 1.5 hour’s drive from the state’s capital city.
The Central Coast region spans 566km2, catching a sprinkle of charming beach towns in its zone. The most well known of these are Terrigal and Avoca – renowned surfing haunts – while the largest is Gosford – the main economic hub of the region.
The world-class natural surrounds are the most obvious reason to travel here, with an abundance of bush walks through Bouddi National Park, and more beaches than you can count (the locals tell us Putty Beach and Spoon Bay are some of the best for a dip)!
But the most enduring reputation of the Central Coast is how overwhelmingly nice the people are. There is a thriving sense of community among the residents and small businesses here (a selection of which we’ve curated for you below) which makes this destination even more special.
So whether you’re staying for a good time or a long time, there’s plenty to keep you occupied on this heavenly stretch of coastline. It’s always sunny on the Central Coast!

Burnt Honey Bakery
Copacabana is located on a crescent-shaped beach just south of Avoca, meaning it is slightly cut-off from the rest of the Central Coast. But the lack of thoroughfare traffic makes this quaint surfy town all the more delightful!
Burnt Honey Bakery is an 18-month-old bakery that’s quickly established itself as a local pilgrimage destination. Expect glistening chocolate eclairs, neenish tarts, handmade pastries and olive sourdough focaccia on the menu, all made on site. Get in quick, they’re only open until sold out!

The Wildflower
Located at the stunning accommodation lodge, Bells at Killcare, The Wildflower is where to go if you’re after something a little bit bougie and a lot local. Headed up by renowned chef, Sean Connolly, fifteen per cent of the produce on the menu is sourced from the restaurant’s own 500m2 kitchen garden, which includes an orchard, olive trees, beehives and free range hens.
With as many regionally sourced producers, growers, winemakers and suppliers as possible, a menu highlight is the locally harvested seafood – such as the crayfish caught off nearby Macmasters Beach!

Shady Palms
The newly minted sister of Terrigal’s Caribbean rum shack, Mumbo Jumbos, Shady Palms is a local favourite in-the-making. Owners Heather, Isaac and Steve drew on the local surf culture when fitting out the space in in-land Avoca Beach, creating a breezy, tropical vibe with references to mid-century Hawaii and 80s California.
The dining, drinking and live music venue comprises a beer garden with lime washed stone booths, an island-style cocktail bar and a bungalow with a more traditional dining room with a vast selection of tap beer, wines and speciality cocktails. Serious vibes!

Bouddi National Park
Bouddi National Park is one of the most significant and well-trodden sites in the Central Coast, spanning 1,532 hectares from Killcare to Macmasters Beach. Due to its ocean-front situ, it contains some of the best secluded beaches on the coast, and epic tracks and trails to get to them!
The Killcare Beach Boardwalk marks the beginning of the Bouddi Coastal Walk, halfway through the 8km walk lies Maitland Bay, a secluded sandy cove surrounded by bushland that can only be accessed by foot. Make sure to bring your swimmers!
If you’re not up for the lengthy 8km hike but still want some great views and a dip at Maitland Bay,   you can drive to the corner of The Scenic Road and Maitland Bay Information Centre, where the beach can be accessed via a 15-minute walk along the Maitland Bay Track.
Close to this intersection is the Marie Byles Lookout, which offers panoramic views along the coastline back towards Killcare Beach. The Bullimah Spur Track, a 2.4km scenic loop with epic views across the national park, also starts and ends at this lookout spot.
Note that Putty Beach, Tallow Beach and Little Beach all have campground facilities for those who prefer a tent to an Airbnb!
