Crimson Angel AU - Nightmares and Masks

Unbeknownst to vessels, the Crown's loyalty isn't solely theirs whilst in service. By order of its master, it is to monitor and report any red flags to Narinder-overtly heretical takes on his doctrines, concerning levels of violence, reluctance to complete tasks, or, in Anthea's case, mental or physical health concerns.

Upon first being crowned Anthea comes across as cheerful and eager to help. Kindhearted, but not naïve. Effective in a fight, yet doesn't revel in violence.

And yet...why is it that the lamb's smile feels so practiced? Why is it that, regardless of the request, do they follow through on it? Why do they seem to encourage the cult's playful teases of them being a 'big sis'?

Most vessels suffer nightmares for a while post-first resurrection. Yet it's when Anthea's nightmares prove to be unrelated to their death that the Crown starts to grow concern. Nights where the lamb awakes screaming names not found among the cult, before, in an all too practiced a manner, staggering to a crate to snatch up a potion bottle and downing it. Only after do they fall back into a completely silent, motionless sleep.

For Narinder he first thought the lamb to be a somewhat overly friendly, but overall harmless vessel who knew their task and was surprisingly attentive to not just his situation, but also that of his typically ignored kits'. Thus he was confused at first at the crown's reports of a despondent, silent lamb when they thought themselves alone. It's only after receiving reports of the Lamb waking up screaming for an entire week post-encountering a razed village that he starts to really pay attention.

Narinder remembers how easy it is to don a mask for those relying on you. And he remembers just how hard it is to remove once in place. The lamb is doomed to die once their role is through, but part of him wonders just who lies underneath.

So... Q!Baghera has some sort of attachment issues with Q!Philza, many things she has done so far are:

having her house close to his, using the karaoke machine as an excuse to visit, throwing a temper tantrum in front of philza like if she was a child, and making a tunnel that connects her to a room under his home. I'm going to take this information and use it for the Caged birds au, the final connection I needed to explain as to why Baghera had to escape the federation labs alone, and the start of her abandonment and attachtment issues... I got sillyyy-

They are rarely seen by people, though there are many a sailor's rumor about a mass of writhing tendrils in the oceans with three bright eyes nestled within. Many people will send the body of departed loved ones out to sea, shrouded in a light cloth and floating in a fragile woven basket, as they believe this will allow the deceased to fully rest. Those who cannot make it to sea often opt for other methods of burial that will see the body quickly destroyed and eaten such as sky burials, but still keep a small item or a small piece of the body (lock of hair, a bone after the flesh is gone, depends on sensibilities) to eventually have returned to the oceans.

"What do you remember of being human, Echo?" The question is out of the blue and unexpected. But Sora offers a patient smile and tilts her head in curiosity, just enough that one of her ears flops over. It's endearing, if anything.

But Echo wishes she hadn't asked.

A tired tone says softly, a pained recollection in her eyes and an acrid haze in her soul that endures, endures, and endures, "But I remember the discomfort more than anything. My body always did feel wrong back then. Misshapen. Condensed. Like it was too small for everything buried underneath, and that ache went so deeply some days that it would make my skin crawl. I hated that part the most."

At that, Sora's expression falls. She looks inexplicably sad, as if she'd hoped for a different response, a gentler one despite knowing the harsh truth about the dark future and the struggles Echo must have suffered. "But you had Grovyle, right? I'm sure he took care of you."

"He did, Sora, of course he did." A sigh, a flick of an ear and claws clenched tightly into the churned earth pressed under her paws. "I doubt I deserved his attention, though. I was too busy being angry at the world to give any care back."

In my lore, Echo does not look fully human during their time in the dark future. Since they were Darkrai before becoming human, and as a result of Palkia's reckless shattering of the Dimensional Portal which distorted both time and space, Echo's transformation was broken and accidental. They ended up looking pretty messed up and definitely (not) human. A lot of their characteristics as Darkrai carried over but rather morphed into something else.

And Grovyle, growing up in a world where humans have been extinct for longer than any living pokémon has been alive, has no concept of what a "true" human looks like. The only thing he knows is descriptions of humans from glyphs and texts in old ruins. Thus, he mistakes Echo for an actual human. And Echo, not knowing what a human looks like themselves due to amnesia, accepts this identification with nothing better to use.
