since apparently I'm having feelings about this today: according to my headcanon, they do not break up right after the events of IWTB.

that near-breakup gives them the push they need to work on their issues, and for a while it works. they're okay, they're happy. sometimes it's hard. sometimes it's impossible. some nights he sleeps on the couch, some days she works extra long days because she doesn't want to face the silence at home when things get bad. but they are determined, and they are in love. so in love, always. they need that to be enough. they've been through so much.

she falls asleep with her head on his shoulder in the middle of a movie. he surprises her with a nice dinner when she comes home. she calls him from work because it's a hard day, and his voice is the only thing that cheers her up. he kisses the sweat off her neck after a long walk on a hot summer day. they get dressed in the morning just to undress each other again no time at all later, and they spend hours exploring what they already know so well, always learning each other all over again. they sit on their porch in the evening watching the stars, their hands entwined, their souls as well. they are in love, so ridiculously head over heels in love even after all this time.

he doesn't tell her when he feels empty inside because he doesn't want to make her hard days any harder. she isn't honest when he asks her what's wrong, blames it on work instead of telling him she can't handle his silence. he says he's fine but she can see it in his eyes that he's been crying. she smiles even though she knows he can always tell when it's fake. he doesn't want her to shoulder the weight of his pain on top of her own. she doesn't want to make his dark days any darker by casting shadows over them.

through it all, there's love, so much love. they have got each other's backs, always. just not their own. and it's too much, it's all too much. how long can you keep stretching out your hand to a drowning person who keeps telling you they're fine while you're watching their lungs filling with water?

she doesn't leave because she wants to, she leaves because she has to. he doesn't ask her to stay. they both have demons to fight. you can't fight when you have no way to hide your bloodied hands from the person who knows you best.

and still there's love, so much love. quiet now. before, it grew into a hurricane to drown out everything when things got bad. now, it's soft, so soft. slow smiles. gentle hugs. phone calls to exchange silly little stories. coffee when he's in town, a kiss on the cheek when they say goodbye. missing each other -- missing each other. not because they're hiding their true selves behind made-up truths. missing each other so much they find another reason to meet for coffee.

working together again, spending time with each other, and it's all there; the same and different. they both walked away but they never left. they tried to stop the bleeding by pretending there was no wound. they make a promise not to cover their cuts and bruises anymore. no more flinching away because they touched a sore spot they hadn't known was there.

it's not easy, but nothing ever is. and there is love, so much love, still head over heels after all this time.
