Argument Pt 2: M.S
The cold air hit your face as you stepped outside, the quiet of the night wrapping around you like a blanket. The tension in your chest began to loosen, but the knot in your stomach remained. The whole argument with Matt had left you feeling exhausted, like your body was at war with itself between the physical pain and the emotional toll of the fight. You hadnât meant to storm out like that, but you didnât know how else to handle it.
You didnât even know where you were going, just walking, letting the cool night air clear your mind. The city was quiet, the streets empty save for a few passing cars and distant voices, nothing but the occasional sound of your footsteps against the pavement.
You found yourself at the nearby park, sitting on a bench beneath a streetlamp. It wasnât much, but it was a place to breathe, a space to think. Your phone buzzed in your pocket, and for a moment, you considered ignoring it. But you couldnât. It was Matt.
You hesitated before pulling it out. There was a message: "I'm sorry. I didnât mean it. Can we talk?"
You stared at the screen for a moment, the apology almost feeling too little too late, but something inside of you softened. You knew Mattâs pride was as big as his voice, so for him to admit that much meant something. The frustration in your chest ebbed a little, replaced by a mix of confusion and the tiniest shred of hope.
You typed out a quick reply: "I need space right now. I canât talk."
You sat there for a while, the screen of your phone glowing in the dim light as you waited for a response. When the buzz came again, you opened it to find a single sentence: "I understand. I just want you to be okay."
For a moment, you just stared at the words, not knowing how to feel. Was it genuine? Did he really understand? You wanted to believe it, but your heart was still heavy with everything that had been said. You couldnât shake the feeling that this fight had dug a deeper divide between the two of you.
You exhaled slowly and looked up at the stars, letting the chill of the night ground you. The silence was a comfort, though it didnât completely take away the lingering tension. You werenât sure how to fix things right now, but you knew you couldnât stay angry forever.
After a while, you felt your phone buzz once more, this time with a call. It was Matt.
You debated for a moment before answering, your thumb hovering over the screen before finally accepting. "Hey," you said, your voice quieter than before, the tension still not fully gone.
"Hey," Mattâs voice came through, softer than usual, almost hesitant. "I know youâre pissed, and I know I messed up. I shouldnât have been so loud, and I shouldâve listened when you said you werenât feeling well. I⊠I get it now."
You sighed, rubbing your forehead as you leaned back against the bench. "Matt, itâs not just about the noise. Itâs about not feeling heard. I need you to see when Iâm struggling, not just assume Iâll get over it."
He was quiet for a moment, the sound of his breathing coming through the phone. "Iâm sorry. I really am. I didnât realize how bad it was for you. I just⊠I didnât know how to tone it down, you know? Itâs like Iâm stuck in my own head sometimes, and I forget that there are people around me who need something different."
"Yeah, well," you paused, your voice steady but tired, "maybe itâs time you start noticing."
Another silence passed, but this time, it wasnât heavy. It felt like he was reflecting, trying to understand, really trying.
"I get that," he said eventually, his voice quieter than before. "I donât want to hurt you, and I donât want to make it worse. Iâll do better. I just⊠I care about you, and I didnât mean to make you feel like your needs didnât matter."
There was something in his words that made the anger in your chest loosen a little more. It wasnât perfect, and the fight was still fresh in your mind, but you knew this was the start of something. The start of him learning how to be more considerate, how to see when you were struggling instead of barreling through with his own world.
"I know you didnât," you said softly, your fingers tracing the edge of your phone. "But you have to hear me next time, Matt. I donât want to be the one always having to ask for peace. I need you to understand that."
"I do," he replied quietly. "Iâll make sure of it."
You leaned back, your shoulders loosening just a little, the tension still present but not as overwhelming. "Thanks," you said, your voice a little more even now. "I just⊠need a little time to cool down."
"I get it. Take all the time you need," Matt said, his voice gentle. "Iâll be here when youâre ready."
The conversation ended shortly after, and as you sat there in the quiet park, the cold air wrapping around you, you realized that maybe this wasnât the end. Maybe this was the start of a bigger change, one where both of you learned to meet in the middle, to understand each other better.
You didnât know when youâd be ready to go back, but for the first time that evening, the idea of heading home didnât seem so daunting. There was still work to do, but things would get better. You had to believe that.
As you stood up from the bench, the weight on your chest felt lighter. With each step, you felt a little more like yourself, a little more hopeful that the space and time would help Matt understand, and that maybe, just maybe, you could find a way to make things work between you two.

What if Worst Wolverine was the same Wolverine from Origins? What if he learned that "Deadpool" Wade Wilson was "Weapon X" Wade Wilson?
Inspired by this ask.
---
When Logan first met Wade in the bar, he felt oddly familiar. Like he knew him, but he couldn't quite place where. He felt nostalgia and regret and something else bubbling up to the surface without his consent. It felt foreign, and he brushed it off when he sobered up. But he kept it in the back of his mind.
But he kept being familiar. His voice, the way he fought, his mannerisms... it was all reminiscent of somebody he felt he should know. Someone long gone.
But it couldn't be, right? All of his old teammates were dead. If this world followed a similar timeline, there's no way this could be someone he knew. He must just be grasping at straws. Delusional, as usual.
It all came to a head a few weeks after the dust had settled. Wade and Logan were drinking together in their apartment, and Wade lopsidedly grinned at Logan with flushed cheeks. Logan felt his heart stutter.
"You know, you were just as cool back then," Wade giggled. "You looked good when you were younger, though I think the silver fox look fits you more with the grey streaks."
Logan frowned. "What do you mean when I was younger?"
"C'monnnnn Wolvie," Wade cooed as he leaned his head against his hand. "Back when we were in the Weapon X program together? I mean, we might not have been the best of buddies but it's kind of mean of you to forget about me."
It's like a part of Logan's brain unlocked. Wade fucking Wilson. Of course Logan remembered him, but he was so different that Logan had never made the connection.
Logan had a complicated relationship with Wade. He both respected him and thought he was a nuisance. Wade's skills were undeniable, but so was his motor mouth. Logan groaned in annoyance most of the time, but Wade's quips had managed to pull a snicker out of him on more than a few occasions. He tried to feign annoyance, but despite what people said, Wade was funny. His jokes were one of the only things that brought any life to the dreary and harsh environment.
Back then, Logan had still been tangled up with Victor and didn't let himself get too close to others (for both his own and their sakes). Still, Wade had found him in the corner of a bar a few times when the rest of the team was partying. He'd sat next to him and just... kept him company. He rambled on about inconsequential things, avoiding the more serious topics. He offered a distraction, a reprieve from the constant violence and solemn atmosphere. Logan appreciated it more than he could convey at the time.
And on the rare instances where Logan wanted to talk, Wade listened. Even if it was drunken gibberish, regrets and frustrations and feelings spilling out into the open. More notably, he didn't report him for having second doubts about the missions. Anyone else would've. Logan didn't do friends back then, but he'd consider Wade the closest thing he had to one.
And then Logan had quit. And left behind his teammates, cutting off all chance of further development. And then Logan had returned, but too late. By then, Wade had been turned into that... thing... by Stryker.
Oh god. The thought of it made Logan want to throw up. Wade, always chattering, with his mouth stitched shut. A mindless drone made to obey orders, a complete antithesis to the man who bent the rules and smiled privately at Logan when he rambled about what could be interpreted as treason. A mockery of everything he stood for.
That Wade was... the same as his Wade. Deadpool was Wade Wilson. Wade Wilson now was the same Wade Wilson from back then.
That means in his world, he'd let Wade down. He'd abandoned him and left him to be experimented on. Worse, he'd killed him. Logan killed Wade.
Fuck. The reason he didn't recognize Wade in the bar was because his was long dead. A clone that he himself had killed.
He looked at Wade, blushing and smiling with adoration in his eyes even as he feigned indignation at Logan not remembering. He looked at Wade and imagined him trapped in his own body, personality erased and gone. He imagined him with his mouth sewed shut, never to speak again. With a flat and empty stare instead of the twinkle in his eye.
Wade had saved him from himself. He'd given him a new home and fought for him to keep it. He'd been willing to die for Logan when nobody in his own universe would so much as look at him. Logan owed him an insurmountable debt, one that he couldn't even begin to repay in this lifetime. But he was trying. To make Wade happy, at least. It was his purpose in this world and would continue to be until Wade decided to throw him out or he finally kicked the bucket.
So the realization that he'd failed his own Wade so horribly made him viscerally ill. Even back then, Wade had been the only one to really see him when nobody else did. When even Victor just looked for a distorted reflection of himself and when everyone else wanted a mindless tool, Wade acknowledged Logan.
In a time when Wade didn't owe Logan shit, when he could've gotten in trouble for being complicit if Logan actually went through with what he said, Wade still protected him. And Logan didn't even think to check up on him in return. (Even when he knew Wade checked up on him. The Tylenol and water beside his bunk didn't appear out of nowhere. He didn't even remember climbing into bed before he passed out.)
Logan left him to die. Logan let Wade die. Wade, who was smart and funny and charming and caring and everything Logan was not. Wade, who had all of that stripped from him while Logan got to keep living. Logan, who took that chance and spat on Wade's fucking grave by ruining it all.
Logan wanted to throw up.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT, RIGHT? - N . CHAVEZ
Mature Content Ahead
Nicholas Chavez x F!Actress Reader
Warnings: SMUT
Summary: You and Nicholas are costars in a new show - Grotesqueire. When it is time to film a sex scene, you aren't ready; awkward tension takes over, but you know what they say; Practice makes perfect.
Note: I just want to say thank you so much for 1k followers and I hope you enjoy this one - and if you are new here, check out my other works. I have new stuff coming, feel free to request in my inbox for a specific character.
If you are looking for a part 2, please read this post as it explains my reasonings behind not making a part 2.
The filming for Grotesqueire has been underway for a few weeks now, this is your first big role in any media which you are extremely excited for. The show has an extremely interesting script, which is one of the reasons you wanted to put your all into your audition - which got you here.
"Y/N, I need you on set B in 5 minutes" Someone shouted from outside the trailer.
You sat up, taking your glasses off as you put them aside as you grabbed your contact case, quickly putting your contacts. You grab your veil, before exiting your trailer and walking towards the set. Crew preparing sets around you as you pass through different hallways, so much going on in one place but somehow you still felt at home.
"I was wondering where you were" You heard Nicholas laugh behind you as you turned to face him.
You laughed, turning to him as you smiled. Nicholas was your co-star playing a weirdly odd but kinky priest - and well, he was definitely lovely to look at.
"Nicholas, what are you doing?" The costume leader came scrambling over. "That isn't your costume for this scene- come!" She grabbed his arm, pulling him out of the set.
You laughed at Nicholas getting dragged away before walking upon the director and listening to your scene directions.
You sat upon your position on the set, the hairstylist coming to fit the veil upon your head properly, fixing your hair under it as you noticed Nicholas enter the set from the side of your view. You turn to look at him, your eye quirking up at his costume- well lack of costume.
"Nicholas why are you wearing just a towel?" You laughed.
"I have no idea- This is what Marissa gave me-" He spoke but was quickly cut off by the director on the megaphone.
"Alright! So can we get Talia on set please!"
You watched a girl walk up to you and Nicholas, smiling as she held a clipboard. "Y/N! Nicholas! I am very grateful to meet you, I am Talia your intimacy coordinator"
You blinked. You read the script you knew it was coming but you didnt realise it would be so early on. Nicholas shared a similar face to you.
"Now, don't worry, we will go over the main aspects and go over any boundaries the pair of you have" She smiled.
The next twenty minutes were spent with you, Nicholas and the intimacy coordinator. You were still shocked. It wasn't that you couldn't do it - Nicholas was attractive, and all, and the attraction for the scene was definitely there; it was just the awkwardness of it.
After talking Talia deemed you guys to be okay to proceed, the horn sounded round the studio as the pair of you prepared for your scene.
The tension loomed in the air as you stared at Nicholas from the doorway, reciting your lines.
"Can you dry my back sister... please" He hummed, passing a folded white towel over to you. You took it, walking behind him as he kneeled infront of the bed. You took the towel, slowly sliding it over his back full of gashes, cleaning the blood from his back as your finger ran over the bumps. You let your hand reset to his shoulder, softly gripping it as he hummed, it was what was scripted but it felt.. awkward.
"CUT!-" Shot through the studio as alarms sounded once more. Talia and the director came over, looking at you and Nicholas.
"Maybe lets take a break, you two talk through the scene and try and coordinate something. It feels.." The direction tapped his chin as he spoke.
"Awkward. It was very tense and not good tense" Talia sighed.
The pair of you nodded, walking out of the studio and towards the trailer as you groaned, flinging open the door as you tore the veil off your head yet again.
Nicholas sat on the couch looking up at you snickering as you groaned, sitting beside him, tossing your legs over his as you leaned back on the couch.
"I had no clue we were filming.. that today. It's just.. awkward" You looked at him, watching his body face yours completely as he held your full attention. The way his eyes stared into yours as you spoke.
"I mean if it makes you feel any better, I was pretty nervous. I didnt really know what to do and its just unfamilar i guess, its not a regular sex scene its gotta be.. kinky" He chuckled.
He made you feel comfortable. No pressure at all, the awkwardness was lifting bit by bit, showing the light under the fog.
"I mean what if we just.. you know" You blurted.
"If we just what?" Nicholas looked at you confused. "Fucked?"
"I mean you said it not me.." You looked around the room, trying to break the obvious tension as he laughed at your reaction. "I mean, for the scene right?" You smirked.
"Yeah for the scene." You sat up and looked at him as he spoke, crawling towards him slightly. You paused just before him. One of your hands gripping his thigh as the other held his shoulder.
The pair of you looked at each other for a brief moment, the balance of friends and coworkers about to be broken. As much as you wanted to chant in your head, 'it's for work, for work,' it wasn't, was it.
Your lips softly connected with his, wrapping your arms around his neck as he pulled you in, sitting upon his lap, your legs wrapping and encasing him between. His lips mimicked your movement, slowly moving against yours, matching your pace and rhythm.
You pulled away briefly for a moment, looking at him. "This is work right..?" You chuckled.
"Definitely work" He smirked, pushing himself up, sending you up as he pulled apart your dress, the top clasps undoing as you kissed him forcefully. Your arms flew around his neck as he tugged the dress down slightly.
Your lips interlocked as you kissed each other hungrily, your hands combing through his locks as he slid all over your torso, pinching and grabbing at the flesh.
You both wouldn't admit it, but this was a long time coming. With the subtle flirting on and off set, you both were excited for the sex scene to finally be able to 'get a taste' as Nicholas said - but you didn't expect this.
You pulled away, gripping the waist of the dress as you dragged it up your body, pulling it up over your head as you dropped it to the floor, allowing yourself to fall back against the couch, your arms around his neck as you guided him ontop of you.
"Fuck-" Nicholas groaned, towering above you as he stared down as you adored in your black lace set as you stared up at him. "Is lingere supposed to be apart of the costume.. I mean stockings? Really? The dress covers it" His hand slid down your thigh to your calf, feeling the silky sheer material covering your bare skin.
"Personal touch" You smirked at him, your hands holding his shoulders as he licked his lips.
Nicholas's head turned to the side, kissing the wrist of your hand as it held his shoulder, taking the hand as he kissed up your arm slowly, gaining closer and closer.
You pulled him down towards you, rubbing his neck softly as you pecked his lips softly. "Nick- This is mad" You laughed out.
A smile covered his lips as he kissed your cheek, to your jaw and slowly down your neck, nipping occasionally. "Its practice... for work of course"
"The for work excuse has been.. overused~" You melted into his touch, your hands resting softly upon his hips above the towel that fixed upon his body. You tugged his hips closer, noticing his lips depart from your collarbone as he peered up at you.
He licked his lips, sitting back upon his knees as he stared down at you, that cheeky grin on his face. "Now, got to act suprised in the scene, I'll give you a little preview" He snickered.
You reached forward for his towel, tugging it as it puddled at his knees. You gawked for a moment, you didnt expect him to actually be pare naked under the towel - acting and all, you'd think he'd have some sort of cover.
"The director thought it would be more authentic to be completely naked under the towel.... For gravity purposes" He winked, his hands sliding down your waist, hooking his fingers through the sides of your underwear, slowly pulling them down your body.
"That's a terrible excuse" You laughed as you lifted your feet out of your underwear as he dropped them on the floor. You sat up, pushing his chest as he sat back on the couch.
"Calm down, cowgirl", He snickered, leaning back as he stared at you; one of his heads reached to rest upon your hip, the other clasped around himself as he gradually began to pump.
You reached back, unclasping your bra and sliding it off slowly as you threw it at him, the pair of you laughing. The sight of him leant back against the couch, hot and bothered as he stared at you while touching himself was all too much, it was making you hot and bothered.
"Fuck me, you are so hot Nicholas" you brought your hands to your face, covering your eyes as you let out a loud drawn out sigh.
"Genes.. what can I tell you" He smiled, as you leaned forward pecking his lips softly a few times. His grin seeping into the kiss as you stared at him, your noses touching eachother slightly.
You leaned in, capturing him in a soft kiss, instantly reciprocated as both his hands gripped your waist. You sat in his lap, softly grinding down against him - humming softly within the kiss at the friction.
You noticed his eagerness as his hips would occasionally buckle up against yours, one of his heads to your neck, gripping it softly as he pulled you closer - the pair of you intensely making out.
Your hands raked through his hair, tugging and stroking it as his hand tested with pressure around your neck as you hummed softly, lightly moaning within the kiss.
You pulled away abruptly, looking down as you took him into your hand as you slowly guided him into you as you let out a light and soft moan, which was sounded out by his own moan.
"Fuckkkk-" His head fell backwards as his hands fell upon your waist, guiding you slowly.
You looked down at him, your hands holding his shoulders as you slowly rutted your hips against his, grinding down against him. Watching his face twitch in pleasure as his breathing stuttered at each movement.
"You are so vocal" You laughed, pecking his lips softly as you rested your forehead against his, continuing to grind down against him, watching his body for every single twitched movement.
"Cant help it- Does it bother y-you.." He stared up at you, slightly breathless as he grinned, his eyes half lidded.
"Absolutely not.. turns me on if anything" You chuckled, kissing his cheek softly as you leaned down to nibble on his ear lobe as you continued to ride him.
Nicholas continued to groan in your ear, making you smirk as you speed up your movements, dropping your body weight down against him harshly as you bucked your hips back and forth. Cusses spewed from his lips as you continued to do so. 'Fuck' 'Shit' 'Holy Fuuuck-', continued to fall from his lips as you hummed softly, soft moans leaving yours.
You watched him intently as his eyes rolled back, his eyes staying hooded as he tried to steady his breathing. Smirking as you noticed the effect you had over him, especially how cocky he is normally.
Your movements slowed down as you panted softly, leaning against him for balance and he noticed. Nicholas picked you up, causing you to yelp momentarily as you pushed you up against a desk.
"Getting tired?" He smirked, pressing his hands against the wall behind you, as he thrusted harshly forward - causing you to gulp back a moan. Your fists clenching as you stared up at him.
"I thought-" You groaned, at each thrust he made, pressing your hands against his chest as you steadied your breathing.
"Mhm.. You thought wrong; I was definitely enjoying before, though.." He pecked your lips softly, leaning to your ear. "My turn now" He whispered.
His hands hooked under your thighs, lifting your lower body up slightly as he continued to thrust into you. You yelped out, shutting your eyes as you tried to control yourself from the overwhelming feeling of pleasure, trying hard to not let go so soon. His lips harshly locked against your neck, as he sucked and bit down against the flesh.
"Nicholas-" You gasped out, moaning softly as your fingernails clawed down his back harshly.
"Shhhh" He cooed, as he licked up your neck, his hips continuing to slam against yours as the desk rocked below the pair of you.
"So fucking good- holy-" You gasped, staring at him as you laughed out slightly, his lips curling up into a smile as he continued to thrust, his hands holding your hips up just above the desk as you locked your legs around his waist tightly.
He dropped you harshly against the wood, placing a hand on your neck, kissing you roughly as you raced to reciprocate. His tongue halfway down your throat as your hands slid down his chest, your fingers feeling between the crevises of his sculpted chest. His free hand, cupping your breast as he squeezed it occasionally.
You hummed needingly into the kiss as his thumb pressed pressure against the front of your throat, causing you to tighten - which he felt. You could feel the smirk on his face as he kissed you, his tongue exploring your mouth as you helplessly allowed it.
You felt his whole hand clamp down on your neck with pressure. Your breath hitched for a moment at the sheer shock as he pulled away, your foreheads resting against one another, beads of sweat falling and mixing within each other as you gasped, staring into his eyes as he thrust deeply, holding himself within you.
"...Nick.." you croaked out as he stared at you, his eyes blown out with lust as he leaned in, biting your lip between his teeth as he held his eye contact with you, his thumb still pressed hard against the front of your throat.
He took his free hand, sliding his middle finger and index finger past your lips and into your mouth as you stared at him. You gave him no indication against it which caused his dick to twitch. He began to thrust against yet this time harder but slower. Your body rebounded each time, pushing yourself into the wall that you could've meshed into it. You sucked on his fingers, tugging his hair as you run your hand down his face, caressing it as you let out a guttural moan as he trusted once more.
"Good girl.. cum for me" He whispered, withdrawing his fingers from your mouth and removing his hand from your neck as his face flew to yours, your lips instantly crashing upon one another as he gripped your hips, pulling you forward and roughly thrusting into you.
You moaned into his mouth, panting heavily as you drew closer and closer to your high. Your leg twitching as you threw your head back as his lips sucked and nipped at your neck as you screamed out loudly. Your hands clawing down his back as you came undone.
You were too dazed in your high, groaning and panting as Nicholas pulled out, groaning as he pumped himself watching as your whole body twitched.
Your legs flung closed as you stared at him, exhausted as he whined before he came on your thigh, whimpering and panting as he did so, his arm leant against the wall behind you as it supported his weight - his face mere centermeters away.
"Holy fuck-" You chuckled, out of breath as you stared at him.
His chest rose and fell as he stared up at you with hooded eyes. His finger swiping his cum off your thigh as he held it up to you.
You smirked, leaning forward and sucking it off his finger as you looked at him. He smiled at you before pushing himself off the wall as he stumbled back to the couch, laying back on it as he sighed - catching his breath.
"That was more of a workout than my actual workout sessions.. jesus Christ", Nicholas groaned, his arm resting up above him.
You pulled yourself off the desk, your legs slightly wobbly as you slowly approached him. You sat beside his head, lifting it and resting it against your thigh as you sighed.
"I think we've got the sex scene down, don't you.." You laughed, running your fingers through his hair.
"Oh, definitely" He smirked up at you.
It was safe to say, when the pair of you finally caught your breath you showered and got rechanged into your costumes. You had to cover up all the marks on your neck but for Nicholas it was fine, he was already marked by makeup so hopefully no one could tell the difference.
When the pair of you got to set, you definitely delivered the sex scene, going beyond the script. Hair pulling, finger sucking, tit grabbing, ass grabbing - the lot. Safe to say everyone was impressed.
"CUT! That was exactly what we needed, guys!" The director clapped as you and Nicholas stared at each other, panting slightly. You smirked, looking down at the tent under the towel Nicholas was wearing.
"Please don't move- it'll be so fucking embarrassing", Nicholas begged. You chuckled, patting his chest.

THE HAT RULE, t. owens
word count | 1.7k words
pairings | tyler owens x meteorologist!fem!reader
summary | where tyler owens decides to show the reader what the hat rule is.Â
warnings | MINORS DNI!! 18+ ONLY!! HEAVY smut! reader doesnât know the hat rule. not proofread. lowercase intended.Â
a/n | first of all, sorry for disappearing, i've had NO motivation to write on here, but i saw twisters yesterday and seeing glen powell in a cowboy hat changed me as a person, and also gave me motivation to write. iâve never written a full smut so i apologize if this sucks, i've stepped out of my comfort zone for this one.
the first time you had ever encountered a tornado was a memory you were sure to never forget. growing up in new york meant rain and snow but no tornadoes. so when traveling to nebraska on a field trip in high school, you were unprepared when the sirens sounded, sending everyone into a frenzy. you had watched as the rain pelted from the sky, a funnel forming up above. you were mesmerized as your teacher pulled you to safety, a sort of thrill tearing through your body. from that moment on, you knew what you wanted to do. you went to college for meteorology, graduating near top of your class before going onto to work at a local news station. but it never quite settled the feeling that something was missing, until you stumbled across tyler owensâ youtube channel.Â
tyler owens had become a sensation, a daredevil who did more than just chase the storms, he rode into them. and that seemed to heighten that need of a thrill. so, you hit him up and to your surprise, he replied. and what had started out as a week off of work to storm chase with the daredevil, turned to going part time at your job and joining him on the road.
that was a season ago, and now you were sat at a dingy bar, sipping a beer with tyler and the team. the man himself was sat on the stool next to you, nursing his own beer and listening to lily speak. you ignored the slight butterflies that entered your stomach as he laughed. you had learned to never mix work and love, but something about tyler had you questioning that lesson. he looked mighty fine in his blue jeans and button up, supporting a cowboyâs hat on his head. you noticed your beer was gone, standing up you turned to your crew.
âi'm gonna get another beer, can i get anyone anything?â noâs were murmured around the group except for one.
âi could use another, how âbout i come with ya?â you shrugged, tyler getting up to walk with you. lily let out a low whistle, stopping at your glare.Â
âbe my guest.â you two walked over to the bar top, signaling the busy bartender. âcan we get two more, when you get a sec?â the bartender nodded, going to make a few drinks before he could grab their bottles.Â
âso, miss city girl, how you likinâ riding with us? ready to go back to the big apple yet?â tyler questioned, turning to look down at you slightly. damn the height difference.
âdonât think youâre getting rid of me that quick, i have a lot more storm chasing left in me, cowboy.â you winked, tyler laughing. you debated for just a moment before reaching up and taking the cowboy hat from his head.
âthe hell you think youâre doing?â tyler questioned as you placed the hat on your own head, admiring your reflection on your phone.
âyou wear this hat all the damn time, i just wanted to see if there was something special about it? maybe it has some magical powers or something.â the bartender came back around, beer bottles in hand. you thanked him, handing him some cash before turning back to tyler, who had an odd look in his eye. you quickly took off the hat, worried you had pissed him. you went to hand it back to him, when tyler shook his head:
âkeep it on, it suits you.â tyler picked up his beer, beginning back to the table. the comment caused a light blush to dust your cheeks. shaking your head, you hoped it didn't show too much as you followed him back. you sat in your seat, confused by the odd looks you received from the crew. nobody said anything about the hat as the night went on, but that didnât stop the odd looks.
by last call, it was you and tyler left of the crew. thankfully the bar was across the street from the motel, tyler paying the tab much to your protest, before setting off back to the motel. you had forgotten you still wore tylerâs hat upon your head, only remembering when you went to brush your hair from your eyes, your hand bumping the rim. âhey, do you know why everyone kept giving me weird looks after i put your hat on? and why boone and dani wouldnât stop snickering?â tyler looked over to you as you climbed the stairs of the motel.
âyou don't know?â you shook your head in response, tyler holding a bewildered look. âyou don't know the hat rule?â
âthereâs a hat rule?â tyler stopped at his door, which neighbors yourâs and lilyâs. âwhat?â
âyou wear the hat, you ride the cowboy.â he deadpanned, your eyes widening and a heavy blush coating your cheeks.Â
âoh my god! i promise i wasnât trying to imply that or anything. not thereâs anything wrong with you, because youâreâ well youâre you, andââ you fumbled over your words, stopping mid sentence when tyler laughed.
âhey, it's fine. if you werenât trying to insinuate that, thatâs fine. but if you were, well, now's your chance. and iâd be more than happy to show you how that rule works.â tyler walked closer, a minimal amount of space between you, just enough to allow you to choose whether you close that gap or leave.Â
you stood there for a moment, stunned at his offer. and without much thought, you closed the gap, hands going to grip his face and pull him closer to you. his hands moved to your hips, fingers digging into the fabric of your shorts. the kiss was feverish, all unspoken feelings surfacing. tyler began to pull away much to your dismay, one hand leaving your hip to fish out his keys from his pocket as he moved his other arm to hold your waist. he unlocked the door with ease, pulling you inside and shutting the door before pushing you up against it, the hat falling as he did so. he went to town on your neck, enticing soft moans and whimpers from your lips. the way he sucked at your neck and how he had previously handled you had conjured up a pool of wetness in your panties.Â
your arm wrapped around his neck, holding him to your throat, as your fingers tugged at his hair. he groaned against your skin, biting down ever so softly when you tugged on his hair. he gripped at your leg, pulling it up to give him better access to your cunt. he rubbed his clothed cock along you covered cunt, pleased with the moans that escaped your mouth.
âgod, keep moaning like that and i might have to take you right here.â you blushed once more, pulling tyler to meet your lips once more. you pushed off the door, lips still connected to tylerâs as you blindly pushed him back to the bed. his legs hit the edge of the bed, tyler breaking the kiss as he pulled off your shirt, both of you kicking off your shoes and socks before lips were reattached once more.Â
you pulled back, tyler unbutton his shirt as you began to work on his belt buckle. âwoah, easy, pretty girl. youâll get a taste, donât worry. the nightâs still young. but for now, i gotta show ya what happens when ya wear the hat.â tyler pulled off his shirt, walking to pick up the forgotten hat, placing it on your head. âthis stays on.â you nodded, eyes hooded as tyler pulled your shorts and panties down. âyouâre even more perfect than i had imagined.â before you could question him, tyler pulled his jeans off, his boxers next as his cock sprung up. tossing them to the side tyler pulled you onto his lap as he sat on the edge of the bed, âyou sure âbout this? i donât have any condoms.â tyler asked, different from how he just was. you nodded, kissing him softly.
âiâm on the pill, and i trust you.â tyler nodded, holding over his cock as he slowly guided it along your pussy. you held yourself up as tylerâs thumb rubbing your clit, enjoying your whimpers. âplease, tyler.â you begged, tyler aligning his cock with your entrance before guiding you down. you hand went your hat as your head rested on tylerâs shoulder, almost pornographic moans escaping from your lips. âoh my god.â he slowly eased himself into you, whispering praises as he did so.
âgod, feels like you were made for me.â your cunt hugged his cock beautifully. when his cock was fully in, he allowed you to get used to the stretch, âtell me when you're ready.â you stilled for a moment, adjusting to his size. you kissed and sucked on his neck, slowly beginning to rock your hips. âfuck, letâs get this off of ya.â tylerâs hands skillfully unclipped your bra, tossing it to the side, fingers ghosting over your perky nipples. you pulled off his shoulder, giving him better access to your tits. âyouâre fuckinâ beautiful, darlinâ.â tyler attached his mouth to one of your nipples, enticing a soft moan. you continued to ride him, hips moving faster as you chased your incoming orgasm. your left hand gripped tylerâs shoulder, fingernails digging into his bare skin as your right hand held onto the hat that adorned your head.Â
as your orgasm inched closer and closer, your movements became more erratic, chasing your high. tyler moaned, whispering praises as your walls clenched around his cock. he knew you were close, mouth moving to your pulse point as he pounded into you, taking over. tyler clapped a hand over your mouth as your orgasm hit, muffling your screams so you didn't wake up your neighbors. his movements however did not slow as he worked you through your orgasm, chasing his own high. your legs trembled as he continued to pound into you, your second orgasm of the night approaching quickly. âfuck! fuck, ty-â you cut yourself off, body shaking as you hit your climax once more. tyler began to huff and moan, pulling you impossibly closer as he reached his own high. you blubbered, unable to form actual words as tylerâs hands roamed your body. you pulled back, kissing him roughly.
âgoddamn,â he helped you off his cock, helping guide you onto the bed, âthink youâll be able to handle a round two?â
âdonât go thinking you can get rid of me that easily.âÂ

one of the best decisions i've ever made was to stop arguing.
i'd always been an arguer. i was defensive about everything and mindlessly contrary. it wasn't all my fault; i was (and still am) talked down to and patronized a lot, and when you live your life that way, you become kind of a raw nerve and dedicate a lot of energy to trying to prove yourself. someone even told me once, "it's just fun messing with you. you get so upset."
at 23, i was working in an environment where about a half dozen middle aged conservative men were always telling me what to do and explaining things to me. i either argued with them when they said heinous things or stewed about it for hours or even days. and so my new year's resolution one year was simply: no arguing.
it felt a little like defeat at first, like i was no longer standing up for what i believed in, even though no matter how right i was or how much proof i had for my claims, no one had ever been swayed by anything i told them. part of that was because they had no respect for me and didn't take me seriously; the other part was the simple truth that arguments are almost never productive. when someone says something and you immediately reply with, "you're wrong and here's why," a wall goes up and nothing can go over it.
i couldn't just let these men talk at me though, so i started asking questions. not leading questions, not with an intention to prove a point or walk them into a corner. i genuinely wanted to understand how they came to shape the opinions they held. i realized that understanding and agreeing are two different things, and just because i seek to understand doesn't mean i condone.
a truly fascinating thing happened: these men walked into corners all by themselves. it turns out nobody had ever actually tasked them with speaking their opinions aloud to a neutral audience. no one had ever been sincerely curious about them and their views. sure, their loved ones probably asked, "how are you doing?" all the time as a show of affection, but that's much different than, "what do you think?"
knowing what i know now, i think that's true of everyone. how many people ask you for your opinion and listen to what you have to say without speaking their opinion back to you? without judging you? how many people actively and intentionally try to understand you?
it's been over ten years since my resolution and i think i can count the arguments i've gotten into on one hand. one finger, even. it's amazing what happens when someone tries to rile you up, pick a fight with you, and your only response is, "can you elaborate on that?"
you can work someone into a very open and vulnerable state when you ask questions. they eventually run out of their usual talking points and move into the personal. when i do this, it's not like therapy; i'm not trying to help anyone. and it's not like teaching; i'm not trying to educate anyone. i just want to understand how people reach the conclusions they've come to. even after all these years of asking questions and not arguing, it still amazes me how few people in this world feel understood, and how easy it is to get them to open up when you say, "i want to know what you think."

BAKUGOU KATSUKI â° 10:32
You tell Bakugou once that you donât know how to take the train home, and he almost blasted your ears off with semi-yelling (or full-on yelling at some point) insults.Â
âHah?â He scoffs, eyes narrowing. This information is new to him, and a surprising one at that.Â
You? The nerd that always bested him when it came to academics, which pissed him off the first few months in U.A.? The person who was not only book smart but was street and people smart as well?Â
The whole goddamn package doesnât know how to take the train?
Really?
Heâs calling bull.
âWhat do you mean you donât know how to take the train home? What kind of idiot doesnât know that?â
âI justââ youâre abashed and really donât know what to say, âI didnât reallyâ Iâve never had the chance to take one until now!â For a consistent honors student, you canât really have everything, can you?
âHowâve you been getting to school and back, then?â
âWe had a driverââ
âFuckinâ courseââ
âBut hey! Listenâin my defenseâmy schools were usually a walking distance from our house.â
âAnd now what? Gonna stand here and wait for a miracle to happen?â
You nudge his side with a frustrated frown (more like a pout, Bakugou thinks.) âQuit it, asshole.â
He backtracks briefly, though you could barely tell at this point. And itâs clear enough that he takes your words into consideration. It could be the fact that you actually look scared shitless right now, something foreign to your typical lax and carefree persona.
âCâmon.â Bakugou grabs you by the arm.
âOwâ hey! Where are we going?â
âYou have to learn somehow, or else youâll look fuckinâ clueless and dumb, nerd.â
You donât argue because you really just wanted to get home, and while you could just call in your driver, you considered that this was important information that would help you in the long run. Besides, you do agree with Bakugou that not knowing how to commute like this is embarrassing, especially at your age.
âWhatâs this?âÂ
Bakugou hands you a card. Itâs decorated with a minimalist logo of Musutafuâs native flower, whose color is your favorite.
âAn IC card,â he simply answers.
Itâs cute, you thought. You noticed how the other commuters had the standard design, so Bakugou must've gotten it personalized to your preference. How thoughtful.
âYou couldâve just helped me get a ticket, though,â you murmur. You fiddle with the card in your hand, glancing at him with a puzzled expression. âI donât think Iâll be using this card that often. Itâll be a waste.â
âThen try and use it as often as you can, nerd.â
âIâll pay you back for thisâhow much was it?â
âForget it.â
âReally, Bakââ
âForget it,â he barks. âKeep up, you shitty extra. Or else youâd miss the last train to your station.â Bakugou starts walking, and you follow suit.
You can load your IC card at the ticket machines or the nearest ATMs. Different stations call for different ticket gates that obviously have different fares. The expiration of cards usually depends on what provider you got them fromâ
âWhat do I do now?â
Youâre hesitantly in front of the ticket gate, with Bakugou on the other side. Youâre like a kid whoâs lost their mother in the mall.
âJustââ Bakugou had to take a deep breath and not make a scene in the train station. He pinched the bridge of his nose, calling for all his ancestors to give him the strength to remain patient.
âPlace your shitty card on the card reader. Thatâs it.â
You do as youâre taught, and you awed when the gates opened and let yourself walk through with a stupidly big smile on your face. âI did it!â
Bakugou thinks itâs fucking stupid of him to think that your enthusiasm for mundane things was cute. But fuck, something must be wrong with him because suddenly he feels a flurry of butterflies lodged in his throat, his heart beating ridiculously fast.Â
âYeah, yeah, whatever.âÂ
He gives you directions, how to navigate through Musutafu without getting lost, and the basic stations youâll be passing by to get to your station. He sees you type most of the things he says on your phone, and the way you were so eager to learn was a sight to see, really.
Boarding the metro, people were just as eager to get home as you two. So you two stood, not that there was much room to do anything about it.
âHold onto the handle unless you want to fall on your ass,â Bakugou says. His tone is hushed to not disturb the other passengers. At least he followed basic commuting etiquette.Â
âItâs so beautiful,â you breathe out. The passing buildings were as huge as those of U.A.âs, if not bigger. With the golden hue of the apparent descent of the sun below the horizon, Musutafu just became more beautiful in your eyes.
He scoffs.
âWhatâs so interestinâ about a buncha tacky buildings? Never seen one before you came here?â
âOf course I have; theyâre just not like this.â
Bakugou follows your line of sight, and he thinks about it carefully. He couldnât see what you saw, but maybe itâs because he grew up looking at this scenery. It doesnât amaze him as much as it did when he was younger, he concludes. To you, this was a first.Â
An experience that could become a core memory in this city. And heâs with you as you live through it. The thought causes a familiar feeling of pride to exude from his chest.
Maybe heâll learn to appreciate more mundane things with you too in the future.
The train stops at another station, and the people scurry out. Once in motion, you were surprised by the speed when it took off, and the motion had you stumbling back. You stumble against Bakugou.
âWhat did I say about keeping a firm hold on the handles, you shitty extra? Thatâs what those are for.â Whether itâs by instinct or unintentional, Bakugou guides your hand to hold onto the support pole. He doesnât let go, and you didnât make a comment about it.
âSorry! Still getting used to it,â you quietly laugh. âI hope the people here donât think Iâm really that inexperienced when it comes to taking the metro home,â you told him. âItâs embarrassing to think that I havenât taken one until now.â
Bakugou thinks itâs alright because you were actually on set to learn. No matter what those other extras say or comment, no matter if they give you unimpressed glances, heâs there to grant them one of his own spine-chilling glares if they had the balls to do so.Â
A passenger who appeared to be around your age stood up from his seat. âExcuse me, you can take my seat. I get off at the next stop,â he says. Youâre a bit hesitant to take the offer, but he reassures you that itâs fine. Itâll be an awkward death for you if you donât accept it, because now heâs standing. âPlease, I insist.â
Unknown to you, Bakugou had an obvious scowl on his face until the stranger left.
âYou look like youâre about to shit yourself.â
âShut up, Iâm not.â
âJealous?â
âHah? Why would I beââ
âShh!â you kicked his shoe with yours.
âQuiet, remember?â
Bakugou rolls his eyes, still frowning. You hold his free hand, cheekily smiling when he tries to free it from your hold. And in the end, he lets you do whatever the fuck it is that you want, but he would never ever admit that he was jealous of some nameless extra. Heâs too far into liking you to help you board a train, get you a personalized IC card, miss his stop two stations ago because yours was still three stations after his, but he doesnât think heâd be vocal about it anytime soon.
Heâll leave it to you to confess.
Then again, you already knew.
Bakugou Katsuki would not go above and beyond like this for anyone else, but he unknowingly does for you.

A/N: Personally if I was Sofia. I would have just left his ass. âWherever the wind takes me.â Ahh forgot to add I was inspired by two fics on here for this. I forgot one but the other is inspired by @rafeandonlyrafe !! Just the beginning bit of it though!
âWoah, whereâd do you think youâre going?â Rafe asks you, as you hastily put your clothes in a suitcase. You ignore him, focused on putting your stuff away. Grabbing a handful of hangers before tossing them into your bag. The clatter of the hangers falling off straps of clothing as you attempt to shove them in. Tears are pricking your eyes. âHey, Iâm talking to youâ he says softly. Attempts too anyway.
âIâm going home.â You say, continuing on putting things away. Rafe eyes you, his brows furrowed in confusion.
âBut- but you live hereâ
âThis isnât home.â You say, suddenly, you feel him grab you by the shoulders to face him. You donât realize how fast you are breathing until he has stalled you.
âWhatâs going on?â He asks, his eyes trying to make your eyes meet his. âHey, you can talk to me.â
Tears are falling down your face, your heart is breaking. And you donât want to hear his voice. The one he used to tell his friends you were just a hook up and how heâll never live with someone like you.
A pogue.
âI heard you telling Ruthie, that I wasnât your girlfriend. That I was just someone you hooked up with. Nothing more. That you wouldnât live with a pogue because you have standards.â You say, shoving him off of you and continuing on packing.
âHey, hey, listen Iâ
You can hear him scrambling, the cogs in his brain trying to come up with something to say. To fix things. But for you, this was it.
âDonât. Just donât, Rafe.â You say, you donât even look at him. Still staring at the suitcase.
You felt a harsh pull at your suitcase, it falls onto the floor. All your clothes spilling out.
âNo! No! Youâre not leaving! Youâre not leaving me!â You look up at him in shock, tears are springing from his eyes. Matching your own.
âYou saidâ
âI know what I said! Okay, I didnât fucking mean it. I just wanted her off of my back.â Rafe said. You shake your head at him, annoyed thatâs what he came up with as an excuse.
âLiar.â You say, attempting to reach for the bag again. But he kicks it further away from your grasp.
âNo. Youâre not doing this to me. To us.â He says, his head shaking. The tears spilling down his face. âI- I said some stupid shit. That shouldnât mean you should leave. We should just talk about it, okay.â
âI donât want to talk about it. I want to go home.â You say, angrily.
âThis is home! Okay! This is your home!â He points around the room. âHere! With me!â
Youâve never seen this side of him before, youâre taken aback by it. Almost scared. The words wonât come, youâre shocked how different his words now contrast what he told to Ruthie and Topper.
âIâm not going to let you shove this under the rug. You canât say one thing and then switch up. Own up to your shit, Rafe.â Your hands are shaking, you just want to go. Hug your mom. But heâs not letting you.
âIâm suggesting we talk. Because in no way in hell am I letting you walk out that door.â Your heart clenches. You donât know what to make of this Rafe. Unsure on where he came from. If he was always there. Lurking, waiting for the moment to come out. Instead of convincing you to stay, heâs making you want to run even more.
âNo, I wonât let you make me look stupid.â You pick up the kicked luggage. Youâre on your knees, taking the clothes in your hands. You donât even realize it when you let out a sob.
âPlease, donât.â He pauses, swallowing thickly. âDonât leave. I didnât mean what I said. I promise you, youâre what I want. Youâre who I want to be with. Please.â Heâs on his knees now too.
âEnough Rafe. Iâm leaving and I wonât let you stop me.â
A guttural sob comes out of his lips, youâre peering at him, with shock once more. Heâs shaking his head, his hands trying to reach for you. But you slap them away. You wonât let him make you look like a fool. And you wonât stay with someone who canât respect you enough to call this for what it was.
âIâm done. Over it.â You finish packing. âIâll come back for my other stuff laterâ you start wheeling the luggage away. Heâs on you like a predator trying to catch its prey.
âI said no! Youâre not leaving!â He shoves himself in front of you, blocking you from the door. You glare up at him.
âGet out of my way!â You scream, he looks at you, his eyes red from crying. His lips pouted.
âI said no. This is just a stupid argument over some dumb shit I said. I didnât mean it, okay.â Heâs looking at you like a love sick puppy. You canât help but feel your heart strings be pulled. But you shake your head.
âItâs not a dumb argument. Iâm breaking up with you.â
You donât know how you do it, you manage to shove him away so you can leave out the door. You hear him sobbing in the shared bedroom you have. The only other sound is the sound of the luggage wheels, wheeling you away from him. From your doomed relationship.
âY/n!â

routledge!reader x rafe, after big john comes back and finds out that both of his kids are dating the camerons, he gets mad, especially at his daughter, cause he thought that she wasn't thinking straight. After a few days, he throws a stupid comment about rafe when they were with the rest of the pogues and reader just snaps at him. pure angst now đ„° she realises that he's never been a good father, only caring about treasures and yells that she wishes he never came back. Then goes to rafe, crying, for comfort đ (i love angst im sorry.)

you sit in the backyard, the soft hum of cicadas filling the warm night air. the pogues are just behind you, laughing and talking in a huddle. it feels good to see them like this againânormal, for once, after everything.
after the chaos of the last year, of treasure hunts, betrayals, and close calls. youâve always tried to stay out of it, letting john b and the others chase after the gold while you lived your life. but eventually, you couldnât stay on the sidelines, not when rafe got involved, not when it became a matter of life and death.
itâs been hard, being stuck between two sides, torn between your brother and your boyfriend. but tonight, you just want peace.
you glance over at your dad, sitting a little ways away from the group, leaning back in his chair with a satisfied grin on his face. big john routledgeâalive, after these three years. you still canât believe it sometimes.
he looks different, a little more worn, a little rougher around the edges, but the way he carries himself hasnât changed. heâs still larger than life, still full of stories, still your dad. and god, you missed him.
he catches your eye, and for a moment, itâs like nothing has changed. like youâre just a kid again, sitting with your dad, listening to him talk about his crazy ideas, his wild adventures.
âyou know,â he starts, leaning forward, âi remember that time you and john b tried to catch that fish out by the dock, and you both fell in. i swear, i thought i was gonna have to drag you two out myself,â he says, chuckling to himself, shaking his head like the memory is some long-lost treasure of its own.
you smile, even though it feels a little bittersweet. âyeah,â you murmur under your breath.
you pull at a piece of grass by your feet, your fingers absentmindedly tearing at it. youâve waited so long for this momentâfor him to come back, for your family to feel whole again.
but now that heâs here, you donât know what to do with it. you canât shake the feeling that somethingâs changed, that heâs not just the dad you remember, but something else entirely. still, you canât help but feel like the little girl who always looked up to him, who wanted nothing more than to make him proud.
âi never thought weâd see you again,â you mumble, your voice low, barely above a whisper. you donât look up from the grass, your fingers still picking at the blades, but you can feel his gaze on you.
âi never thought iâd be back either,â he admits quietly. âbut i couldnât stop thinking about you two. every day out there . . . i thought about coming home.â
you scoff softly, a bitter smile pulling at your lips, even though you donât mean for it to. âbut you didnât,â you say, barely above a whisper. âyou didnât come back for three years.â
he shifts in his seat, his fingers tapping against the arm of the chair. âit wasnât that simple, y/n,â he says. âi was trying to protect you. there are dangerous people out there, people who want what weâre after. i couldnât come back until i knew it was safe.â
you nod, but itâs a hollow gesture. youâve heard it all before from other peopleâthe excuses, the treasure, the danger. it always comes back to that.
you glance at your friends, laughing and sharing stories with each other. youâve spent so long trying to push this life aside, to live outside of the mess of treasure hunts and betrayals. but it always pulls you back in.
âyeah, you always did put the treasure first,â you murmur as you face forward again. youâre not even sure if you mean to say it out loud. itâs more to yourself, just a thought thatâs been living in the back of your mind for too long.
âdonât do that.â he leans forward, his voice soft, almost pleading. âi did it for you and john b,â he says, like itâs the most obvious thing in the world. âfor our family. i wanted us to have somethingâsomething big, something that would change everything.â
âyeah, but we didnât need that,â you say, your voice small, but firm. youâre still pulling at the grass, twisting it around your fingers. âwe just needed you.â
he doesnât say anything for a moment. itâs like heâs trying to figure out what to say, but thereâs nothing that can fix the years of distance. nothing that can make up for what you lost when he left.
thereâs a long silence, and for a moment, you think maybe this is as close as youâll ever get to understanding each other. you donât want to fight tonight. you just want to sit with him, to pretend that things could go back to how they were before.
âso,â he starts again, his tone shifting back to playful, like heâs trying to lighten the mood, âyou and john b teaming up with the others to chase down treasure? guess it runs in the family.â
you laugh, but itâs a little forced. âyeah, well, i tried to stay out of it. but . . .â
âbut what?â he presses, leaning forward with a smirk. âgot a little taste of adventure, didnât you?â
you glance up at the marsh, a faint smile on your lips. âsomething like that,â you mutter.
but you donât mention rafe, donât mention how heâs become a part of this tangled mess, how hard itâs been being caught between him and your family. youâve already told your dad the day you reunited a few days ago in barbados. didnât end well that time either. you donât want to ruin the moment, donât want to start another fight.
but, as if the universe is reading your mind, your dad shifts the conversation in a way that makes your stomach drop. âjust promise me,â he says, suddenly serious, âyou wonât let that rafe cameron kid get too close. heâs no good, y/n.â
the words hit you like a slap, and for a moment, you just sit there, staring at him. it takes you a second to process what heâs said, to even understand the casual way heâs dismissed rafe, like itâs nothing. like heâs nothing.
âand i hear john bâs with sarah now, too?â his tone shifts, bitter and disapproving. âso now both of my kids are wrapped up with the camerons. hell of a choice you both made.â
you freeze, your stomach tightening. there it is. you knew it was coming, but it still hits you like a punch to the gut. itâs not the first time heâs made a comment about rafe, and you thought you were doing the right thing confessing whatâs changed since you last saw him, but now heâs dragging john b into it, and that makes it worse. so much worse.
âdad,â you start, trying to keep your voice steady, but thereâs an edge to it, a warning. âdonât.â
he shakes his head like youâve said something ridiculous. âno, i am gonna say something. sarah, rafe, theyâre cameronâs kids. ward cameronâs kids. youâre smart enough to know better than to get mixed up with people like him. theyâre bad news. always have been.â
âyeah, but theyâre not like him,â you snap, your voice sharper than you intended. âsarahâs not ward. rafeâs not ward. theyâre not their father.â
he just laughs, but thereâs no humor in it. itâs harsh. âyou really believe that?â he asks, shaking his head again. âtheyâre camerons. itâs in their blood. you think youâre any safer with rafe than you were without me here? because iâm telling you right now, youâre not.â
you stand up, your hands balled into fists at your sides. youâve heard enough. for days now, youâve listened to him make little digs about rafe, about the camerons, and youâve kept your mouth shut. but tonight, itâs too much. you canât keep it in anymore.
âthree years, dad. three years you were gone, chasing your stupid treasure, while we were stuck here. john b and i had to figure it out on our own. so donât stand there and act like you have any right to tell me who i should or shouldnât be with.â
big john looks at you, stunned, like heâs seeing you for the first time. but youâre not done. thereâs too much youâve kept bottled up, and now itâs all spilling out.
âyou care more about that gold than you ever did about us,â you say. âyou care more about treasure than you do about being a father. you donât know anything.â
big johnâs face hardens, his jaw clenching as he stares at you. âi know enough,â he says, his voice cold. âi know who the camerons are.â
âyeah?â you snap, your voice breaking. âwell, maybe if youâd been here, youâd actually know something about me too.â
you turn on your heel, ready to storm off, but the moment you move, you notice it.
the pogues are silent now, all of them watching. sarah, jj, pope, kieâtheyâre still, their conversations dropped as they stand there, wide-eyed and uneasy. john b, though, heâs just sitting there with his can of beer held low in his hands, lips pressed together. you can tell heâs heard it all before. heâs not going to step in because he knows you need to let it out.
youâre just done with it. you take a step forward, ready to leave this backyard and the suffocating tension behind. but something stops you, a feeling gnawing at your chest, pulling you back. you hesitate, turning just enough to glance at your dad over your shoulder.
heâs still staring at you, his expression set like stone, as if heâs waiting for you to say more, to take it all back, maybe. but you wonât. not now.
your voice wavers, but itâs steady enough. âi wish you never came back.â
his face doesnât move, but something flickers in his eyes. you donât wait for him to respond. you turn away for good this time and walk out, leaving the backyard behind.
before you know it, youâre at rafeâs house, your knuckles rapping against the door almost frantically. you pace, glancing down at your phone, watching as the notifications keep comingâtexts from john b, a few from kie, and even jj. they're all asking the same thing: â where are you? â or â are you okay? â
you drag your hand down your face, trying to ignore the tightness in your chest. before you can get lost in your thoughts, the door swings open, and there he is.
rafe stands in the doorway, his expression unreadable. he leans against the doorframe for a second, his lips slightly parted, taking you in. you know heâs already pieced together whatâs happened from the voice messages you left on the way over. not that heâs the type to acknowledge it with some grand gesture or comforting words.
he doesnât say anything, but he steps aside without much ceremony. you slip past him and leave your phone in the foyer, tossing it carelessly on the side table as you pass, the pinging of messages finally fading into the background.
you make your way down the hallway, not even sure where youâre going, but your feet carry you to the living room. rafe follows close behind, his presence looming, but not overbearing. his eyes are trained on you, watching as you take in the dimly lit room. thereâs a bottle of whiskey sitting on the coffee table, a glass next to it, already finished. itâs so rafeâquiet, controlled chaos.
you stop, your breath shaky, your chest tight, and before you can hold it back, everything comes spilling out.
âhe doesnât get it, rafe. he just doesnât fucking get anything,â you start, your voice louder than you intend. you turn to face him, your hands gesturing wildly as you try to make sense of the mess of emotions coursing through you. âi mean, heâs been gone for years, and he comes back, and suddenly he thinks he can just . . . control everything? like he gets to have an opinion about my life after everything heâs done. he doesn't even know me anymore.â
rafes eyes are fixed on you, and heâs listening, letting you get it out. his jaw twitches slightly, but he stays silent, just watching as you unravel in front of him.
âand itâs like . . . itâs like no matter what i do, no matter how hard i try, itâs never enough! not for him, not for john b, not for anyone!â your voice cracks, and you press your palms against your temples, trying to hold yourself together, but the tears are already brimming, threatening to spill over. âi didnât ask for any of this. i didnât ask to be stuck in the middle of all this shit with my family and you and . . . god, itâs too much.â
you turn away from him, your breath coming out in shallow gasps now as you try to steady yourself. but itâs no use. youâre falling apart, and it feels like the weight of everything is finally crushing you.
before you can say another word, rafe steps forward, his arms sliding around you in one swift motion. âalright, alright, câmere,â he murmurs, his voice soft but firm. âcâmon.â
you collapse into him, burying your face into his chest, the tears coming freely now. he holds you tight, his chin resting lightly against the top of your head as his hand rubs slow circles on your back.
rafeâs not one for words, and you donât expect him to be, but thisâthis is enough. the steady rise and fall of his chest, the way his arms keep you grounded, itâs enough to make the world stop spinning for just a moment.
you donât say anything else. neither does he. the silence stretches on, but itâs not uncomfortable. for once, you feel like you can breathe.
even though heâs holding you, his mind seems elsewhereâhis jaw clenched, muscles rigid beneath the surface. itâs not hard to guess where his thoughts have drifted, especially after everything you told him in those voice messages.
you can tell heâs upset. not just because youâre upset, but because of what your dad saidâabout him, about his family. his body is stiff as he holds you, and you know him well enough to see the silent anger simmering just beneath the surface. his eyes arenât on you; theyâre somewhere distant, staring past you as if heâs imagining your fatherâs words in his head.
âiâm sorry about what he said, rafe,â you whisper into his chest, feeling the way his breathing shifts, more shallow now, controlled. âhe said something about sarah and john b, too.â
he doesnât respond right away, but you feel his hand pause against your back, fingers pressing a little harder. for a moment, it feels like he might pull away, but instead, he just tightens his grip on you. his silence speaks volumes. rafe is the type to internalize everything, to let it fester until it boils over, but you can feel it nowâthe tension thrumming through his entire body.
âdoesnât matter,â he finally mutters, though you can tell by the way his voice is low, that it does. âitâs nothing i havenât heard before.â
you pull back slightly, just enough to look up at him, and his eyes flick down to meet yours. theyâre darker than usual, clouded with frustration, but he still tries to soften his expression for you.
âhe doesnât know what heâs talking about,â you say quietly. âhe doesnât know you.â
for a moment, neither of you speaks. rafeâs hand resumes its slow, steady motion against your back, though the tension hasnât fully left his body. you can feel the war going on inside himâthe part of him thatâs angry, defensive, but also the part thatâs trying to be here for you, to let go of his own frustration long enough to comfort you.
âfuck him,â rafe mutters after a long silence, his voice barely above a whisper. âhe doesnât get to talk about you like that. or me.â
thereâs a dangerous edge to his voice now, but you know itâs not directed at you. heâs angry, not just at your dad, but at the situationâthe impossible mess youâve both found yourselves in, caught between your family and his.
âi donât care what he thinks,â you murmur, holding onto him tighter. âiâm here with you. thatâs all that matters.â
he doesnât respond, but his hand moves to the back of your neck, his fingers curling gently into your hair as he exhales, long and slow, like heâs finally letting go of whatever was eating at him.
for the first time tonight, the room feels quiet as the two of you stand there, wrapped in each otherâs arms.
youâre gazing up into his eyes, searching for somethingâcomfort, understanding, maybe a little reassurance. your hands find their way up his shoulders, one resting gently on his collarbone while the other slides higher, rubbing the area around his ear and jaw.
âyou know that i love you,â you murmur, your voice soft but steady, as if the confession can dissolve the tension still hanging in the air.
rafe stares down at you, and in that moment, you can see everything in his eyes. heâs never loved anyone more than he loves youâthe way you stood your ground against your own dad tonight, defending yourself and defending him and his family. itâs a vulnerable space, one he doesnât often let himself occupy, but with you, it feels different.
he nods, pressing his lips together as if trying to hold back a flood of emotion. then, with a sudden urgency, he leans down and kisses you deeply. the taste of whiskey lingers on his lips. itâs a kiss that speaks of everything unspoken.
but just as quickly as it begins, he pulls away and presses a soft kiss to your cheek. you close your eyes into the gesture, feeling the warmth of his lips linger against your skin.
rafe goes back to resting his chin on your head, his breath steady as he holds you close again. you breathe in his familiar scent, a mix of sea salt and something distinctly rafe, and let the silence wrap around you like a comforting blanket.
in this moment, nothing else matters. not the fights, not your dadâs harsh words, not the stupid tangled web of family and expectations.
just you and him, together, holding onto each other for as long as you can.

âWhy are you every-fucking-where.â Y/N stopped short, glaring at the man across from her. The entire party, she had been trying to avoid him- but he wasnât letting that be at all possible.
Harry grinned widely at that, the most obnoxious and infuriatingly pretty smile with those stupid dimples. Leaning against the wall as he studied her for a good moment, there was no hiding the not so casual enjoyment he got out of flustering her.Â
Finally, he broke the silence, standing up from his casually cool stance on the wall. She knew he was going to say something that annoyed her and it was proven as he opened his mouth. "Câmon, donât be like that. Perhaps you just can't keep me off your mind, baby girl. Canât stop thinking about me, seeing me everywhereâŠ"
âEw. Do not call me that.â She wrinkled her nose in disgust for the nickname, walking past him. He followed, of course, because he always did. âJust because we have a few similar friends doesnât mean you need to be at every social event. Iâd love a break from your smug face.â
"You can't possibly be getting tired of this handsome face alreadyâŠ" He protested as he followed behind, his words purposely trying to rile her up. Getting a rise out of her seemed to make his whole day, and usually she would laugh it off but this time⊠things were different. Finding a spot in the kitchen, he watched as she puttered around trying not to look at him.Â
His eyes danced with amusement as he added in some more. "Or are you just mad that I always seem to steal the show, love? Not my fault that I'm effortlessly charming and captivating, darling."
âHumble, too.â She snorted, grabbing a drink from the cooler. Buzzballs were not the thing sheâd want to choose when she was thinking about the next morning, but they were exactly what she needed when it came to trying to mentally escape right now. âYouâre insufferable. Really.â His eyes were on her as she used her nail to pop open the cap.Â
âSo are you going to leave me alone, or follow me around all night?â
Harry chuckled in amusement at her sarcasm, enjoying the way she rolled your eyes at him. "Leave you alone when you look this lovely? Not a chance in hell, darling." He hummed, tapping his own bottle against the counter. He paid no mind to the new people who entered the space, eyes glued on the girl he was talking to. "But as much as I'd love to keep annoying you, I have a much better way we could spend time. Don't you remember, love?" He purred. âI certainly do. Itâs hard to forget the way it feels when you moan-â The interruption was instant, her hand gripping onto him.Â
âHarryâŠâ she hissed, tugging his arm further down the dark hallway and into a bedroom. Whoâs? She didnât know. All she knew was that she had seen where this was going, and she didnât want him to say it too loudly. Everyone was so god damn nosy and respectfully, she didnât want to deal with any of that. Not after all she had said.
âListen.â Putting her hands on her hips, she tilted her head up at him as he stood a little too close. âWe hooked up, it was a mistake. You know it.â Though it didnât seem like he thought so considering how he trailed her ever since. âWe⊠we were a little drunk and I was lonely and you were there.âÂ
Y/N knew she was slightly lying, but she was trying to fool herself. If she said it enough times, maybe sheâd believe it. Theyâd always had chemistry. It was intensity that burned between them, her disdain and his addiction to getting a rise out of her. It was only a matter of time that theyâd give into some sort of blow out- but she hadnât expected it to be as good as it was. It couldnât happen again.Â
Harry had that knowing smirk on his face as she tried to deny it all, knowing exactly where this was headed. The thrill of chasing her, of getting under her skin was intoxicating, addicting. He loved making her growl and huff and glare at him, because it meant getting her undivided attention.
"Was it really a mistake?" He asked as he leaned against the door, finally giving her some breathing room. "Or have you just been avoiding me because you couldn't stop thinking about it?"
The truth was that he had been thinking about that night ever since. Multiple times. Before he went to sleep, when he was in the shower.. It was hard not to.Â
Her jaw clenched, placing her bottle down and crossing her arms. âLook. Youâre hot, Harry. You donât need me to tell you that. Youâve got plenty big of an ego. But Iâve been avoiding you because it can not happen again.âÂ
Y/N knew that Nina was into Harry and she really didnât want to start any drama. Not that he even seemed remotely into her, but because she acted like he was someone she had dibs on. As gross as it was, she tended to start shit with anyone Harry pursued and she just wasnât in the season for drama. There were other things to worry about other than start a feud over a man.Â
He had known about Nina's crush on him, but he didn't care about her. He never had, and he never would. As fucked up as it was, what they had, in his mind, was just a harmless flirtation, nothing more. Y/N knew that, but Nina didnât. He couldn't have been more clear he had no interest in her, but some people took delusion to heart.Â
It didnât matter how good Harry gave it to her last time, how hard her legs shook, how sore she was in the best way. Didnât matter if his tongue was hot and through and how heâd cleaned her up with it. It couldnât be repeated.
Harry's smirk only widened as she openly admitted he was attractive, his ego inflating even more. But when she mentioned avoiding him, his smile faltered slightly.
"Why can't it happen again?" He asked, moving closer to her, his eyes darkened. Too close, making her take a deep breath. If there was one thing he would give him, his presence was commanding. Felt. Her body was very familiar with his now, wanting to lean into him, but she fought it.
âBecause.â She sighed tiredly. âI really canât deal with any drama. Iâm exhausted, and the last thing I need is that she-devil going after me because she thinks Iâm âstealing her man.â â
The man let out a laugh, amused by the comment. Yeah, he knew exactly who she was referring to and found it funny. He knew she could be a drama queen, and he definitely didn't care for her possessive tendencies, but he had told her that they had nothing going on between them and never would.
He stepped closer to her, his greedy hands reaching out to touch her hips, his touch firm. "You're not stealing me, love. She never had me, and she's delusional if she thinks she does." His eyes gleamed with desire as he looked at her, his touch becoming a bit more possessive in his own way. "And I want you, not her."
âHarry, you donât actually want me.â She groaned in frustration, trying to ignore how her tummy dropped as he pulled her into him, his other hand curling around her jaw. Stupid body, stupid hormones, stupid muscle memory. Â âYou think you do because you like a chase. You donât actually like me or anything, you like how I fuck.â She said bluntly, glancing up at him.
Harry's smug expression faltered as she protested. He could feel the annoyance, but he also noticed the way her body responded to his touch. There was no denying that. "Is that what you really think?" He asked, his grip on her jaw tightening slightly as he looked down at her. "That I'm just chasing you only for the thrill of the chase, for the sex?"
His eyes darkened, his other hand moving lower on her hip, pulling her flush against him. He could feel her body against his, the softness, the warmth, and he wanted it all back. There had been no way she could tell him that she hadnât enjoyed it, considering heâd made her cum 3 times, made her gush all over his cock. Sheâd clung to him, held onto him, whimpered his name. But heâd taken care of her, he had gotten her some pomegranate juice and a snack, helped her tie her hair up, driven her home. When the contact had been nonexistent, he was hoping she was just making him work for it- but that wasnât all this was to him.
âYeah.â She furrowed her brows. âIs it not?â Harry wasnât the relationship type, not usually. Everyone knew that. Y/N had constantly reminded herself that when theyâd first met and she had a bit of a crush on him, only to see that he liked to fuck emâ and leave âem. It lost the appeal and she had resented him a bit for it.Â
Was it fair? No. She knew that. But their dynamic had been built on that resentment.Â
Harry's jaw clenched at her response, frustration and something else flickering in his face. He loosened his grip on her slightly, his gaze searching her eyes, trying to convey something she obviously wasnât picking up on.
"And what if I told you that you were wrong?" He asked, his voice low. "What if I told you that there's more to me than just chase and sex?" He tilted his face closer to hers, his hand on her hip keeping her snug. He hadn't realized it himself just how touch deprived for her he actually was. Did she really think it was all just⊠a game? Had he not proven himself to her that night? Granted, he had maybe fucked up in how he communicated after but⊠the ball had been put in her court.Â
He could tell that she was skeptical, but he was determined to make her believe him.
"I want you." He said firmly, his hand on her jaw moving to wrap around the back of her neck, his fingers tangling in her hair. "I want everything. Your body, your mind, your heart." His hand on her hip moved lower, his touch a little needy. "And the fact that I can't have you is driving me insane. Want you to believe me."
âBut why?â She sputtered. âAll we do is argue. All I do is blow you off and all you do is follow me around to piss me off.âÂ
She had no idea he had his own fascination with her. How heâd silently watched her, observed, saw how she was with other people and wanted that chance to feel that. To have one of those smiles for himself.
Harry shook his head with a light laugh, his grip on her flexing slightly as he stared down at the girl he had been playing cat and mouse with. "Because I'll take the arguing, the blowoffs, all of it, just to be near you. I don't know when it truly started, but you've gotten under my skin, love." He pushed her back against the door, his body pressed against hers, trapping the girl. Looking down at her, his eyes were dark with desire, with honesty. It was a little unsettling.
âHarry.â She swallowed, eyes fluttering as his fingers stroked over her jaw and down over her throat, tenderness tinging the touches. âItâs not funny if this is a joke. Itâs not.â
Harry's let out a tired breath, his touch gentle as he stroked her delicate skin, taking advantage of every touch. He could see that vulnerability in her eyes, and it only made him more determined to prove himself. "Mânot joking. " He said firmly. "This is serious, I want you, and mânot giving up until I have you."
âThen youâre gonna have to work for it.â She exhaled sharply, pushing out of his hold and escaping back towards the party.
Y/N was almost fooled into giving in again- but she could give in without a real, true idea of what he was dedicated to. Maybe it was cruel of her to try and write him off as a bit of a slut trying his luck, but sheâd never been awarded the chance to get to know him outside of their usual dynamic.Â
That was why, the next day, seeing him on her front porch had her gasping in surprise. âShit!â She yelped, keys falling to the wood below her.Â
He looked good. The night of sleep seemed to refresh him, heâd showered, and he was bright eyed this morning. Determined. Why? She didnât know. But this was not at all what she had expected when opening her front door. â You scared the fuck out of me. What are you doing here?â
"Good morning, love." He greeted her. âNice to see you this morninâ. You look gorgeous.â That cheeky fucking grin, as usual, tilted on his mouth.Â
She crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow in question. "You didn't answer my question. What are you doing here?"
Harry flashed her a grin, completely unfazed by her skepticism. "I'm here to see you, of course." He said, as if it was obvious. âSilly thing.â
âWhy?â She didnât want to get too huffy with him but he was nearly speaking in riddles and she didnât have the patience for that. âAre you alright?â
Of course he was amused at how frustrated she looked, finding her impatience obviously endearing. Maybe it was just her, though. Y/N was a bit of a weakness of his, he found. Pushing himself up the final step, he grabbed her keys and handed them back to her, making no effort to pull his hands away from her own.Â
"I'm fine, love." He hummed casually. "I just wanted to see you." Holding her hands in his, his thumbs rubbing soft circles on the skin. Casual intimacy that slightly caught her off guard.
The girl merely looked at him in confusion. The plan for today had been to go to the grocery shop and do stuff around the house, not entertain the man who had admitted to wanting her last night- but she knew if he was here, it meant he was determined to get his way.
Aka, spending time with her.Â
âOkay.. So now you saw me.â She said lowly. âDo you want to go home now?â
The sight of her looking so flustered and on edge fueling his determination, he shook his head. "Not yet." He said, his voice low and firm. "Mânot leaving until I get some of your time."
Y/N closed her eyes, taking a deep inhale through her nose and exhaling through her mouth. Meditative breathing did wonders, it seemed. Usually. She knew Harry well enough to know that he wasnât going to let this go. He was going to keep prodding until he understood that he probably had no actual intention of being around her long term. He was looking at her with metaphorical sex goggles on. Yeah, she was good in bed, but that was only a tiny portion of her.Â
Heâd learn eventually.
âWell, I have to go to the store. SoâŠâ
Harry watched you closely as she opened her eyes from the attempting to calm herself. It was a little unnerving to know she needed to calm down from such a simple interaction but then again, he had been coming on a little strong. It was his nature, but he tried to relax his stance a bit. No way was he going to let an opportunity to spend time with her be wasted. He was dedicated now, wanting to win her over. "You're going to the store?" He leaned in closer. âLooks like I'll just have to come with you, then."
Y/N sputtered as he took her handbag and totes from her, tucking them under his arm as the other held her hand.Â
âCâmon.â He said smugly, pulling her towards his car. She followed, confused at how he had just agreed to go grocery shopping with her. Willingly. It wasnât something he liked doing and she knew that- she somehow had found out one night that he had his delivered- but he seemed eager to do this with her.Â
The last thing she expected was for him to open the passenger door and help her inside, but he did. Like it was second nature, opening it up and taking her hand to aid her into sitting sound, placing her bags on her lap.
Harry's smirk widened as he scooped up her handbag and totes, his grip on your hand firm as he guided her towards his car. He snickered under her breath at her sputtered protest, enjoying her disbelief that he was actually willing to go grocery shopping with her. Like it was some sort of hardship.
Once he had settled her in, he leaned in closer, the smell of cinnamon gum filling her senses. Keeping his stance, his eyes locked on her, his gaze intense. He could see the confusion in her eyes, and it only fueled his determination to make it second nature to her, to expect this sort of thing from him. .Â
"You look cute this morning." He said, his voice low and smooth. "Did you get much sleep last night?" He reached up and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his touch gentle.
Her cheeks felt hot as he tenderly touched her, the softness of it all surprising her. âUm⊠I did.â The compliment had flustered her too. It wasnât something she was used to from him. Their usual dynamic was tense on her end and being a pain in the ass with a stupid smirk on his. This sort of treatment was new to her.Â
âThanks. You lookâŠ.â It felt unnatural to compliment him, but she meant it. Strangely enough. All of this was so new to her. âNice.â
Harry chuckled at the slight hesitation in her words, enjoying the way she was thrown off by his tenderness. One day she was going to accept it. He smiled at her attempt at a compliment, narrowing his gaze at her. "Just nice?" He teased, raising an eyebrow. He placed a light hand on her knee, his thumb stroking her skin in small circles, his touch gentle and comforting.
âWell, handsome? I dunno.â She grumbled. âJust so you know, youâre carrying all the grocery bags. If you insist on coming along you need to be useful.â
"Oh, I can be very useful, love. You jusâ need to find out what else I can off sâall." He said, his hand continuing its caressing on her knee, his touch sending a little jolt through her body "And donât worry, Iâll carry all the bags. You just worry about picking out what you need."
Harry could see the doubt in her eyes as he reassured her about carrying the bags, and he knew he had to prove it. Not just that, but the whole thing. He hadnât won her over quite yet, but he would.Â
Removing his hand from her knee, he ignored how much he missed the touch and stood up straight, standing tall and strong next to the car.Â
"You donât believe me?" He asked, raising an eyebrow. "Just watch, sweetheart. Gonna shock the shit out of you."
ââ-
Y/N was suspicious.Â
Harry was⊠behaving. More than, actually. He was being sweet and polite, borderline charming. Standing beside her as she pushed the cart, grabbing the items at the top shelves, not rushing her at all. He was flirty, sure, but nothing insane that truly made her roll her eyes at him. His voice was soft spoken and held only a tiny bit of the arrogance it usually did⊠and she liked it.
Who the fuck was this? And what had they done with the normal Harry?Â
âYouâre freaking me out a little.â She mumbled, checking off another thing on her list. âLike, youâre being pleasant. Thatâs not normal for you.â
"What, I can't be pleasant sometimes?" He teased, giving her a look.Â
He couldn't help but grin as he watched her check off another item on the grocery list, his eyes roaming freely over her focused expression. He was enjoying this, he realized, enjoying the chance to be close to her more than he would have ever expected. "Maybe Iâm just in a good mood today." He said, leaning against the cart.
âItâs just suspicious.â She glanced at him from the side of her eye. âYouâre always following me around and trying to get me to snap at you. So excuse me for being a little confused when youâre acting so normal and nice.â
Harry liked working her up and getting reactions out of her, but he liked her. Y/N gave him the tummy butterflies, the excitement, the hot cheeks, all of it. She just didnât know that- or was heavily in denial. It was his fault, he knew, from never expressing how serious the desires were and expecting her to read between the lines. But fuck, could she blame him? Y/N was a spitfire.
âCan you- fuck.â She groaned. âThis can not get any worse.âÂ
Across the aisle, she saw her. Nina. Glaring at the scene of Harry standing a little too close to Y/N, doing a domestic activity like shopping together⊠It looked like they were way more than friends. This wasnât something he liked doing and of course, the other girl would know that⊠So the situation didnât look too good.
Harry could feel the shift in her mood as she spotted Nina across the aisle, and he tensed up slightly, ready for the inevitable confrontation. Fuck, and theyâd been doing so good. Of course, someone had to throw him a curveball.Â
Good thing he was willing to work for this.Â
"Relax." He said quietly, his hand squeezing her shoulder reassuringly, thumbing over the fabric. "I'll handle it."
Harry could feel the tension in her body as he held onto her, knowing that she was on edge. He knew Nina could be a handful, and he didn't want her to add to the stress of the situation. Especially after Y/N was seemingly warming up to him.
He took a deep breath and turned to her, his expression neutral but firm.Â
"Nina." He said, his voice calm and steady- almost bored. "Why are you glaring at us like that?â
Ninaâs eyes flicked between the pair, her expression hardening as she spoke. âWhat are you two doing?â She asked, her voice dripping with disdain.Â
Harry kept his expression neutral, his hand on Y/N unmoving as he spoke to her. âWeâre shopping. Is that a crime?â He replied, his tone cool.
Ninaâs lip curled up in a sneer, her eyes narrowing. "Shopping? Is that all?" She asked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. âAwfully domestic, isnât it?â
Harry chuckled, unruffled by her attitude. "Yes, Nina. Weâre just picking up some groceries. Is that so hard to believe?" he challenged, letting her try and intimidate him. It wasnât going to work.Â
The girlâs jaw clenched as Harry responded to her, clearly annoyed at the lack of reaction she was getting from him.Â
She took a step closer, sizing Y/N up with an unpleasant expression. She really needed to not make that face- it was unflattering. âIs this a date or something?â She snapped, her eyes flickering over to Harry.
Harry chuckled at Ninaâs question, finding her assumption humorous.Â
He looked over at the girl he wished would say yes, his eyes filled with amusement. "What do you think, love?â He taunted. Maybe it wasnât the nicest thing to do, but he didnât particularly care.Â
Y/N rolled her eyes. This wasnât what she wanted out of this interaction. Hell- she never wanted his interaction at all. âWeâre shopping.â She said lowly. âAnd we have to go.â
Nina pursed her lips as her response, clearly unsatisfied with the answer she was given. She never could leave well enough alone. Harry could see her gearing up for another snarky comment, so he quickly interjected.Â
"Sheâs right." He said, his tone firm. âWe do have to go. Bye."Â There was no hint of remorse on his face as he motioned for her to get out of the way.Â
With that, he guided Y/N forward, steering both her and the cart towards the checkout area.
âChrist.â Y/N rubbed her temples. âSheâs gonna try and burn my house down. I know it.â She sulked.
Harry chuckled at the outburst. He continued steering the cart towards the checkout area as she went back over the list, a small smile on his lips.Â
"Don't be so overdramatic." He teased. "She's not gonna burn down your house. She's just jealous."
âHarry, sheâs scared like, 4 women away from hanging out anywhere near you completely.â Y/N sighed. âI know you donât see it as much, but sheâs tenacious. I donât know whatâs going to get her to stop, but you need to actually have a conversation with her to tell her youâre not interested. Or whoever ends up being your girlfriend is going to have to deal with her crawling around.â
Harryâs smile faded slightly as she mentioned Ninaâs past behavior. He knew she could be intense and possessive, but he didnât realize the extent of her actions. Considering he hadnât even slept with her, it seemed like a massive overreaction. Of course there had been natural curiosity over some of the women in their friend circle had gone, but now that question had been answered.Â
He bit his lip, mulling over the words as he helped her load the groceries onto the checkout belt. "Youâre right." He said finally, his voice serious as it broke up the beeping of the items being scanned. "I guess I didnât realize it was that serious. Mâsorry. I don't particularly want to have that conversation, but it needs to be had. Iâll talk to her."
Harry continued helping you with the groceries, lost in thought for a moment before speaking again. "Iâll talk to her soon, make sure she knows for sure me and her are never going to be a thing and if she wants to try and scare off anyone I talk to, she wonât be invited to anything else." He said firmly, his eyes serious.Â
"But first," he added, breaking the tense air as his tone turned playful again, "We have to get these groceries home. Iâm starving."
â
It was safe to say that she was even more confused than she had started off being.Â
Harry helped her bring the groceries into her place. He helped her unpack. He even fed her cat while she washed the fruit so she could put it away. Helping himself to her house like he had a right to be there, a comfortability that had her a little spooked.Â
It was hard to accept the thought of Harry actually liking her. First, she hadnât ever seen him with a serious girlfriend. All she had been exposed to was seeing him fucking around with different people. Secondly, he was always so playful and unserious that internally, the most insecure part of her felt like maybe it was a trick, and it made her more apprehensive of him.Â
It wasnât fair of her to be so judgmental when she was not a virgin mary herself; she knew that she wasnât giving him a proper shot, but it was scary. He was scary, in a way. Maybe it was the idea of how far feelings could go if she gave in, but it felt hard to stop those original emotions she had towards him from coming back.Â
âThank you.â She said awkwardly as Harry sat at her breakfast bar. âUm, for helping put away the stuff and bringing it inside. That was really nice of you.â
Harry, who was lounging in a chair at the breakfast bar, chuckled at the awkward gratitude. "Sâno big deal." He said, his tone casual. "Iâm happy to help."Â
He leaned back in the chair, his eyes roaming over her face, his favorite thing to do. Watching her was the best part of being around her. He could see the tension in her shoulders and the uncertainty in her expression, and it made him wonder what was going on in that head of hers. Why she was so apprehensive. Yeah, he knew he had a weird dynamic with her before, but no one thought of him as a bad guy.
The longer he looked, the longer Harry could tell that there was something bothering her, and he wanted to find out what. Call it morbid curiosity, but it was needed. He leaned forward a bit, his eyes locked on her pretty face.
"You seem a little tense." He said, his voice soft. "Is everything okay? You've been quiet since we got back."
She hadnât expected him to call her out on it, but she should have. Harry was as blunt as they came, and she could have laughed at it if she didnât feel a little anxious.Â
âIâm okay.â She wrapped her arms around herself, looking at her feet for a moment the soft green ladybug socks he had given her a laugh over. âIâm a little anxious, I guess. This new dynamic kind of⊠put me off kilter.â The confession hung in the air before she continued. âIâm used to you being annoying and⊠I dunno. Itâs unfair of me, but I keep getting nervous that this is some joke to you and youâre gonna go back to being obnoxious once I let my guard down.â She winced. âAnd Iâm sorry. That isnât fair to you when I know I havenât been the nicest to you either. But I guess you intimidate me a little.â
Harry listened intently as she spoke, his expression softening as she revealed the source of the troubled look on her face. He knew that he had been a bit of an arse in the past too, and he could understand why his sudden change in behavior had thrown her off.Â
He leaned forward on his hands, his gaze still fixed on the girlâs tense stance, lips rolled into her mouth. "I get it." He said quietly. "And Iâm sorry if I intimidated you or made you uncomfortable. Thatâs the last thing I wanted to do."Â He ran a hand through his hair, sighing softly. "And as for this being a joke... itâs not. Not in the slightest. Trust me."
âI guess Iâm a little confused too.â She admitted. âWhere all of this is coming from. I know we hooked up a few weeks ago, but you didnât call me or anything after. I wasnât expecting you to, donât get me wrong, but then I felt awkward seeing you at all the events and stuff and you were acting normal. I never let you get alone with me on purpose because I didnât want to hear you tease me for giving into you.â
Harryâs expression soured a bit as she brought up the hook-up. He knew he hadnât done anything to dispel her doubts about his intentions, and he felt a pang of regret. He paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts. How could he explain it without sounding as stupid as he felt? âI know I didnât call you after, and I should have. I was an idiot⊠I just⊠I thought maybe you wanted me to chase a bit, that the ball had been left in your court after I dropped you off at home and⊠and I didnât think, honestly.â He ran a hand through his hair, a frustrated sigh escaping his lips.Â
âYou have to understand why Iâm a little uneasy.â With arms wrapped around herself, she let herself look back up at him. There was no trace of joking on his features and it did make her feel a tad bit better. âItâs not that I didnât like⊠what we did.â It was the best sheâd ever had. âBut I think Iâm not cut out for just hooking up. I donât regret it, even if I acted like I did.â She decided to give him a tiny bit of her vulnerability to see what he did with it. âI just know that hooking up, for me, never ends well. And I donât know you really well, Harry.â She fiddled with the hem of her shirt, nerves shot. The last thing she wanted to do was seem desperate about locking him down or something, but she couldnât lie to him or herself.
âIâm not trying to make you feel any sort of pressure to want to date me or anything. Iâm just trying to lay down a boundary that for me, I think Iâm one of those people that really needs an intimate connection and trust with someone. For some reason I trusted you that night, and I know you wouldnât harm me in that way, but sobered up and standing in front of you, I feel a little apprehensive. Like, I donât want you to feel any sort of pressure from me, but in order to have me in the way you said you want⊠it has to have some level of commitment is basically what Iâm trying to say.â
Harry listened intently as she laid down the boundaries, his expression thoughtful. He could see the vulnerability in her eyes and in the way she fidgeted with her shirt, and it tugged at his heart in a way he hasn't felt before. The last thing he wanted was for her to feel any sort of regret and he was glad she hadnât so far, but he had to appreciate her laying out the law here. It gave him direction on where to go. When she finished speaking, he took a moment to process the words before responding. He can feel the seriousness of the conversation, and it's clear that she wasnât making demands lightly.
He took a deep breath, his own vulnerability on display in his honest gaze. It was imperative to him that she understood how much he got it. How dedicated he would be to it if given the chance. "I understand." He said quietly, licking over his bottom lip. "I understand that you need a committed relationship, darling. I also understand that you need trust and intimacy in order to get there." he added, his voice soft.Â
He took a moment to organize his thoughts, then continued speaking. It should be laid out in front of her. âYou know, Iâve been thinking about this a lot lately⊠about us, I mean.â
âWhat do you mean?â She asked quietly, taking the moment to look him in the eye. It was the most serious she had ever seen him. Usually he had that smirk on his face, so smug or teasing, heâd be poking and prodding at her to get a reaction- but nothing about this interaction was insincere. It was almost off putting to see him this way.
Harry's gaze met hers, his eyes intense. "I mean that I've been thinking about us in a more serious way." he admitted. He took a deep breath, his expression tentative. "I know I've been kind of hot and cold with you⊠and I know that I've played games in the past. But after we hooked up⊠I really couldnât stop thinking about you. How different we were like that⊠How good it felt. So I want you to know that... I donât want to play games with you. I want tâbe serious about this."
Y/N hadnât expected that answer. In all honesty she thought heâd reject her, say he wasnât into it and keep it moving. That was what she was prepared for- not this. That sort of confession had her realizing that maybe she really didnât know him at all. She knew some parts, sure, but seeing him like this was brand new. This man in front of her was a familiar stranger, at least this new side.
âIâd have to get to know you better.â She brushed her hair behind her ear, giving him a tentative look. âAnd it would be a little slow. I think I could give you a chance, though. Iâve been unfair to you, I think. I feel like we⊠kind of got off on the wrong foot.â
Harry lets out a small sigh of relief, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. âIâm okay with slow.â he says, his voice sincere. âIâm willing to work for it.â
He leaned back a bit, giving her a little more space as a hint of his usual playfulness returned to his features.. âAnd I think youâre right⊠we got off on the wrong foot. But Iâm glad weâre taking the time to get to know each other now.â
ââ-
ââÂ
Harry was coming over again.Â
It was strange. Since theyâd agreed to explore something romantic, seriously, he had changed. Not completely, not to the point where she wondered who he was before, but enough to make her soften up. Hints of him being a pain in the ass weâre still there. But he was⊠sweet. Genuine. A little silly in a cute way that she hadnât allowed herself to enjoy before.Â
One of the biggest shocks of all, was the fact that he was so gentle with her. He handled her with care, even if he was a little overly touchy. She was getting used to it because she found herself liking it, but he was the first guy to really be a bit of a clinger.Â
That was the last thing she had ever expected from him.
His touches were soft and sweet and he looked at her with this little twinkle in his eye that she knew he couldnât genuinely fake it. He liked her- liked her , liked her.Â
She was still a bit shy with him, but it was slowly melting away each time they saw each other. Now the nerves were barely there, being overtaken by anticipation and excitement. It wasnât something sheâd ever thought would happen- being excited and antsy to see Harry, wanting him back in her house.Â
He was coming over tonight and she had been prepping for a bit, primping and priming herself even though she wanted to look casual. There was never once so far that he hadnât told her she looked gorgeous, and it had started becoming part of her daily routine. She wanted to impress him, make him say it again and mean it.
Her tummy twisted as she heard his car door slam shut, smiling to herself as she adjusted her cropped top and went towards the door.Â
He was beautiful. Really, gorgeous as she opened the door to reveal him in the early evening light. He looked a little tired from work, slight bags under his eyes, but his smile melted her a little as he walked right into the house, dropping his bag in the foyer with little care for its well-being and picked her up in a big hug. Her feet dangled as she squealed, strong arms wrapped around her waist as he lifted her effortlessly.Â
âHi.â She beamed shyly, feeling him set her down on the floor.
Harry couldnât help but grin as he placed her down, his strong arms wrapping around her waist lazily.. He loved how delicate she felt in his arms, and he loved the way she squealed with surprise as he lifted her up a bit. Really, he loved most things that had to do with her. Taking a moment to admire her cozy appearance, his gaze lingered on her cropped top. âHi.â He replied, his voice soft and warm. âYou look beautiful.â
Like clockwork.
Before she could respond, Harry was pulling her back into a hug, burying his face in her shoulder as he held her, rocking slightly. A prime example of how touchy he was, unable to stop himself. He nuzzled her neck, letting his cool nose brush against the hot skin. âI missed you.â he mumbled, his voice muffled against her, leaving a little shiver in itâs wake..
When he said things like that it made her want to giggle madly, but also melt into a puddle. He truly meant it, was the thing, and she had a hard time understanding how this had happened. How he had gone from her little enemy to the person she looked toward to seeing the most.Â
âI missed you too.â She admitted, fingers tracing down his back. It was an attempt to get more open about her feelings. Harry was being candid about his own, so she felt like she could extend him the same grace. Even if it was slightly terrifying, she had no reason to hold back anymore.
Harry pulled back slightly to look at her, a soft smile on his lips at her shy admission. "I like it when you say that." he teased, his voice low. He brought his hands up to rest on her hips, his thumbs tracing small circles on the bare skin. He loved the way the cropped top revealed just enough to make him want more, and he found himself struggling to focus on anything but the feel of her body under his hands.
Harry wanted her, and there was obvious desire for her there. In all honesty, there was a lot of desire for her in general that he had done his best to keep under wraps Heâd been so good, trying so hard to prove himself- but that didnât mean he was a saint. He was beyond attracted to her in every sense of the word, and it was hard to ignore that..
âExcuse me.â She let her smile grow, her tone playful. âMy eyes are up here.âÂ
Y/N knew Harry wanted her in all of the ways, and heâd been exceedingly patient. He knew she was trying to build their connection before getting intimate with him again, and she appreciated it- but that didnât mean she didnât enjoy knowing he desired her.Â
Or that she didnât have those same urges.
Harry's gaze flicked back up to meet hers, a cheeky grin on his face. "I know where your eyes are. I look at them plenty, do I not?" He replied smoothly, his hands still resting on her waist, giving a gentle squeeze. He couldn't help but let out a small laugh as she shot him a look, his eyes sparkling with mirth. "But you can't expect me to ignore the rest of you when you're wearing something as distracting as that." Testing the waters, he was seeing how far his flirtation could go.
âItâs loungewear, you freak.â She scoffed, a hint of a smile turning up her lips. Leggings and a cropped top were a bit of a reward for him, though. She figured if he had been so patient with her then he could at least get to look at her. âBut Iâm glad you like it.âÂ
Taking his hand in her smaller one, she led him towards the kitchen to show him the pizza boxes and salad she had made to pair with it, feeling weirdly shy about it. That was the theme of today, considering she had come to a conclusion in her head- but he didnât need to know about it quite yet. âI knew youâd be hungry when you got off work, so I ordered ahead.â
Harry's eyes lit up as he saw the food, warmth spreading through him. No one had been thoughtful like that to him before, but of course she would be. This sort of thing was why he had liked her. Heâd seen it time and time again with their other friends and secretly wished for some of it for himself, that sort of care⊠and now that he got it, he felt that yearning for her get a little bit stronger. He let out a low whistle. "You knew exactly what I needed." he murmured, a grateful smile on his lips.Â
Pulling her into him, his arms wrapping around her waist from behind. He nuzzled her neck again, his breath warm on her skin. "You're too good to me." he murmured, his voice showing just how grateful he was.
Y/N shivered slightly as he spoke against her skin, large arms wrapping around her and making her feel that same brand of delicacy that only Harry had been able to accomplish. His arms were just⊠beautiful. Built and muscular, covered in those tattoos, she loved every single thing about them. Looking at them, feeling them, how he used them⊠she couldnât admit it out loud yet, but being in his arms was one of her new favorite places.Â
âYou texted and said you didnât sleep well and you had a rougher day at work and⊠I dunno. I thought maybe youâd like something ready when you came over. I would have cooked myself but I had a workshop.â She rambled on a little bit, feeling the need to overexplain herself.
Harry squeezed her tighter, his chin resting on her shoulder. He inhaled her scent, his nose buried in hair as she spoke.Â
"Mmm. " He hummed, his voice low and gravelly. He ran his nose over her throat, lips brushing against the sensitive skin. "You didn't have to do all this, you know." He moved his hands down over her hips, his thumbs tracing soft circles on the exposed skin there. "But I'm really grateful you did."Â He was quiet for a moment before speaking again, his grip on her tightening slightly. "Can I ask you somethinâ?"
âHm?â She replied. It was hard to focus. Sure, it would be awkward if anyone else say them just standing in her kitchen with the large man wrapped around her body, but no one else was there to judge her for indulging both herself and him in this sort of cuddle.Â
Harry's body was pressed against her, a small smile on his lips. He really did enjoy this moment of quiet intimacy just as much as he enjoyed the more energetic moments where theyâd go out or heâd help her take care of her garden.
"Can I stay over tonight?"
It should have been a scarier question to her, all things considered, but the answer came out of her mouth naturally.Â
âSure.â She nodded. There was no second guessing it either. âIs that what that bag was?â She realized he had brought in a bigger duffle than his usual work one, but she had thought it was maybe just to change from his work clothes.
Harry's smile grew as she agreed so easily. "Mhmm." he hummed, his voice low. His hands moved up her sides, tracing the curve of her waist. "I wanted to be prepared just in case you said yes." Presumptuous? Heâd prefer the terms hopeful, even confident. Theyâd been doing so well, he had to at least ask.
He pulled back slightly, looking down at her with a hint of a smirk on his face. "So... where can I sleep?"
He turned her in his grip, letting her look up at his face now with narrowed eyes. Her heartbeat quickened though she tried to calm it down. He was teasing her a little bit, but he did genuinely want to know.Â
âIf you promise no extreme funny business⊠you can sleep in my bed.â She placed her hand on his bicep, squeezing a little. It was her own reward. âBut remember, Harry. No sex. Okay?â Gliding her other hand up to cuff over the back of his neck, she decided it was finally time to tease him back a bit. âHowever⊠If youâre really, really nice to me⊠I may let you kiss me again.â
Harry's smile widened, his eyes sparkling with a hint of challenge. He leaned down, bringing his face closer to the girlâs. "You're being bold, darling." he teased, his voice low and playful. "Are you trying to tempt me?"
âA little.â She hummed. âI like when youâre sweet to me. So if you keep it up, Iâll let you kiss me as long as youâd like tonight. I know Iâve been holding all of that intimacy hostageâŠâÂ
It had been driving him wild. Near kisses and her letting him brush his hand over the curve of her ass a few times before putting them back up to her hips, heâd tested the waters but got rejected. Now, she was loosening up a bit.Â
âSo.â She blinked up at him. âAre you gonna be nice to me tonight so you can kiss me?â
Harry's eyes glinted with a mixture of desire and playful mischief. He loved it when she teased him just as much as he loved it when she got all shy and flustered. Which one he likes more, he couldnât tell. "Oh, I'll be so nice to you tonight you won't be able to stand it." he purred, his voice low and husky.Â
He wrapped his arms around her waist, drawing her closer until their bodies were flush against each other. "But I have one condition, little miss."
âWhat is that?â She questioned, unsure what it could be. With him, it could be anything.
"You have to promise me that if I'm being too... forward, you'll tell me to back off. I don't want to overstep. Even though I want to kiss you until you can't think straight. So promise me you'll speak up if I get too much."Â
Her smile widened, nodding in agreement. Heâd just earned himself quite a few points. Never had she expected him to be as respectful as he was, but she utterly adored it. âI will. I promise, Iâll tell you.â She agreed, leaning up to kiss the curve of his jaw. âBut itâs time for you to eat. I can feel your tummy grumbling.â
Harry let out a low chuckle, his eyes flickering over her pretty face. He loved the way her smile widened, and the feeling of her plump lips against his jaw send a shiver down his spine. More. He wanted more, and more, until their mouths were tingling and numb. Until she looked drunk on the kisses, clinging to him like he could only hope.
"Mmm. Okay, fine." he grumbled. "I'll eat. But only if you feed me, since you were so kind as to order ahead for me."Â He gave her a puppy-dog look, his lower lip jutted out in a mock-pout. It was good, sheâs give him that- but not good enough.
âAbsolutely not.â She snorted. âNice try.â

that old cliché.
you swore youâd never give in to the maid of honour and best man cliche. and then you met evan buckley.
evan buckley x female reader

authors note - and so she returns!! thank you all so much for your loveliness on my post about my break - I appreciate it more than you know. this one was so much fun to write. iâve not written any longer stuff for buck, but heâs a character I feel that I have a really good understanding of - I actually think weâre very alike - so this came so easy. hope you love it as much as I do. <3
masterlist. inbox.
Silvery melodies of laughter clink off the rim of the champagne flute you hold in your freshly manicured hand. As the gentle breeze whips through the material of your dress, you look around you, realising youâve never seen so many people so happy at once.
The backyard of the Italian villa is packed, dozens of guests milling around - dancing, drinking, chatting and catching up. Family, friends, colleagues; people from every phase of the bride and grooms life, all celebrating together in one place.
A rocks glass is placed down onto the table in front of you with a thud. Looking up, youâre met with the sight of the best man towering over you expectantly with a drink in his hand.
âEvan.â
âHi gorgeous.â
You scoff, staring up at him through your lashes.
âWhatâs this?â
âA drink.â
âYeah. But why?â
âItâs whiskey. I watched you grimace every time you had to drink the champagne, so I thought youâd want something different.â
You swirl the glass, listening to the tinkle of the ice against the sides.
âYou were watching me, huh?â
âOf course I was. Canât take my eyes off you in that dress.â
âShut up,â you chide, fighting to keep the grin off your face. âIâm not doing this with you.â
âDoing what, exactly?â
âThe whole best man and maid of honour thing. Itâs just too cliched.â
He laughs all hearty and genuine, and you poignantly ignore the way the butterflies start fluttering in your stomach.
âThen why do you keep looking at me like that?â
âLike what?â
âLike you want to eat me.â
Now itâs your turn to laugh, shaking your head at him.
âYeah, right. In your dreams, Evan.â
âOh, you will be,â he winks, knocking his glass against yours in a quick cheers before walking off to the find the groom.
You watch him go, not completely oblivious to the way his suit fits him just right. Determined to stand your ground, you inhale a deep breath before taking a sip of your drink. The drink that definitely isnât exactly what you needed. The drink that heâd practically read your mind to figure out. Effortlessly.
â” â”  ·ă â” ăă * · â”
Itâs been like this all day.
You met Evan Buckley for the first time last night, at the rehearsal dinner. The bride, your best friend in the world, kept telling you that youâd love the best man.
âHeâs from California,â sheâd said. âHeâs Dannyâs friend from when they were kids. Heâs a firefighter, babe. Heâs hot.â
Youâd laughed it off, zipping up the back of her dress while she watched you in the mirror.
âOh, come on. Thatâs so cliched. The whole maid of honour and best man thing is so old, Lucy.â
âYouâre single, heâs single,â sheâd protested. âItâd do you some good to get laid, relieve some stress. And people let their guards down at weddings. Nowâs your chance.â
âIf I wanted to get laid, Iâd get laid,â you scoffed.
âAll Iâm saying is that Buck is completely your type. Heâs gorgeous, heâs funny, heâs sweet. And youâre gonna have to spend a fair bit of time together tonight and tomorrow, so⊠just keep an open mind.â
âFine,â you soothed, rolling your eyes. âMind wide open. Alright?â
âYouâre gonna love him.â
âYou said that already.â
âBecause I really believe it. Youâre gonna love him.â
And the problem is⊠she was kind of right.
No, you donât love him. Youâve known him for 48 hours. But⊠thereâs something.
Lucy wasnât lying. He is gorgeous, and funny, and sweet. And hot. So hot. He showed up to the rehearsal dinner in dress pants and a linen shirt, all sun kissed and muscled and tanned and stunning.
The two of you were seated next to each other, planned so carefully by the bride and groom. One minute you were making cautious introductions, shaking hands and smiling gently. The next minute you were crying with laughter, clutching at his bicep as he grabs your thigh, legs intertwined and chairs pulled together.
Lucy and Danny nudge each other occasionally, watching the both of you get along like two old friends that have known each other forever. A look passes between them that says I told you so clear as day.
But youâre stubborn. Too stubborn, some may say. You know youâll never hear the end of it from your friends if you give into this very alluring temptation, and perhaps your pride means a bit more to you than it should. So you resist, you refuse to give in. Even if you really want to.
And that was just last night. Today has been even worse.
By worse, you mean the connection between you and Evan has grown even stronger. You walked down the aisle with him, arm linked with his, both dressed up to the nines. The maid of honour and the best man, a perfect picture.
You havenât been able to keep your hands off each other all day. Little touches - his fingers on the small of your back, your grip on his bicep, shoulders brushing and thighs pressed together. Nothing crazy, but nothing meaningless, either. Thereâs an undeniable electricity buzzing between you, hot and alive.
Youâre not sure how much longer you can deny it.
â” â”  ·ă â” ăă * · â”
Youâre dancing with Lucy and her little nieces when you hear yelling and commotion coming from the other side of the dance floor. Looking over, you see Danny, Evan and other groomsmen flailing around and fussing.
âWhat happened?â Lucyâs yelling, making her way over with you in tow.
âJust a drink spillage, Luce! But itâs red wine, and now Buckâs shirt is pink.â
You look at the man in question and canât help but laugh. His crisp white dress shirt is now a pretty shade of pink across the front, his cheeks a rosy colour to match.
âStop laughing,â he chides, but heâs grinning at you as he says it. âI need to go and change. I have a spare shirt in my suitcase upstairs.â
He starts to leave, but soon turns around and calls your name.
âI donât have a key for that big door at the end of the hallway to get to our rooms. Do you?â
âYeah, itâs in my purse. You want it?â
âJust come with me. Itâll be easier.â
Before you can argue, heâs taken off, big strides across the garden. You have to practically run in your heels to keep up with him, shaking your head in frustration.
âI could have just given you this,â you say when you reach the door, unlocking it for him.
âWhereâs the fun in that?â
The smirk he gives you is so cheeky, itâs a wonder you donât smack it off his face. Cocky bastard.
âYouâre so annoying,â you mumble, walking with purpose to his room.
âCome in with me? Itâll only take a minute, then we can walk back together.â
You know you should say no, tell him that youâll meet him downstairs. But you donât. Instead, you say,
âFine. But hurry up. I donât wanna miss the party.â
âYes maâam,â he mock salutes, unlocking the door to his room thatâs conveniently directly across from yours.
You take a seat on the edge of the bed, trying to avoid watching him undress. He shrugs off his now pink shirt, taking it with him into the bathroom.
Youâre surprised at how tidy everything is. Not that you think Evan would be particularly messy, but he doesnât strike you as a neat and clean type. His suitcase is unpacked into the closet, bed made, nothing on the floor. It only makes you like him more.
âCan you grab my other shirt from the closet please, gorgeous? The one I wore last night for the rehearsal dinner.â
You swing the two doors open and rifle around, failing to see the linen button up that heâs looking for. Suddenly, you feel a warmth behind you, Buckâs solid form caging you in. He reaches around you, arm brushing yours as he finds what he needs.
âFound it,â he murmurs into your ear, all low and honeyed.
Against your better judgment, you turn around, finding yourself face to face with him. He towers over you, watching your reactions carefully. Your hands reach out and rest on his bare chest, steadying yourself before you either fall over or pass out.
Buck gently traces your bottom lip with his thumb, eyes completely locked on yours. You have to resist every urge to either bite it or suck it into your mouth, reminding yourself that now isnât the time. The noise from the garden floats up and through the window thatâs cracked open slightly, tethering you to the reality that is slowly fading away the longer you hold Evanâs gaze.
He leans in, and to your surprise, doesnât kiss you immediately. Pressing his forehead to yours, he inhales deeply, as if committing the moment to memory. His thumbs are now tracing gentle circles on your jaw, soft and callous at the same time. You inhale slowly, processing the scent of his cologne mixed with the evening breeze. If you could bottle it up, you think, youâd be a millionaire. This would cure everything.
Buck finally closes down the gap between you, inching towards your lips softly. You shut your eyes, waiting for him to finally kiss you - when thereâs deafening knocking on the door. The two of you jump apart, hearts pounding and nerves on a live wire.
Evan strides over to the source of the noise, taking a deep breath to try and compose himself as he goes. You perch on the edge of the bed, smoothing down your dress and attempting to look as inconspicuous as possible.
âBuck? Dude, itâs Jake. Hurry up, yeah? The guys wanna do our dance routine before everyone gets too drunk to remember it.â
He doesnât bother opening the door, just yells back through the wood.
âYeah, sure - Iâll be down in a minute!â
You hear Jakeâs footsteps retreat, both of you exhaling the breaths you didnât know youâd been holding. Buck looks at you, worried that the momentâs been ruined, to find you stifling a laugh behind your hand.
âThereâs a dance routine?â
âShut up,â he grumbles, fighting to keep the grin off his face. âWe created it years ago. The guys wonât let it die.â
âOh, I canât wait to see this.â
Youâre cackling, reclining onto the duvet as you laugh.
âStop,â he groans, jumping over to flop onto his back on the bed next to you. âI did a lot of regrettable things in college⊠and that routine is definitely the worst of it.â
âI hope you know that youâre never going to live this down, Buckley. Iâll be reminding you of this forever.â
âOh yeah?â he asks, propping himself up on his elbow so he can look at you. âYou really like me, huh?â
âWhat the hell gave you that impression?â
âYou said forever. Whatâs next, honey? You gonna get down on one knee later?â
Youâre suddenly aware of the warmth of the whiskey flowing through your veins, giving you a liquid confidence that stuns both you and the man lying next to you.
âTwo knees, maybe. But not one.â
His eyes go wide as you smirk, pulling yourself off the bed and making your way over to the door. Buck watches you carefully, gaze steady and firm.
âYou coming? Iâm more than ready to see those moves of yours.â
He stands up, slipping on his shoes and shrugging the clean shirt onto his broad shoulders. You grab your purse, leaning against the doorframe as you wait.
Evan reaches past you for the door handle, nose purposely brushing yours as he does it.
âIâll hold you to what you said before,â he murmurs, moving a strand of hair away from your face softly. âDonât think I wonât.â
You look up at him with big doe eyes, like butter wouldnât melt.
âSure, Evan,â you reply lowly. âIâll believe it when I see it.â
Breaking away from him, you swing the door open, strutting down the hallway without looking back. Your confidence has sky rocketed, knowing that he wants this just as badly as you do. You walk back out to the garden and take your earlier seat, ready for the show youâve been promised.
â” â”  ·ă â” ăă * · â”
The dance routine is spectacular.
Itâs cheesy and hilarious and very early 2000s inspired - itâs almost like watching a music video from a boy band you loved when you were a teenager. It should embarrass you, turn you off majorly, but⊠it doesnât. It only does the opposite.
Everything Buck does makes you like him more.
You spend the rest of the evening dancing, laughing, and floating on cloud nine. In a garden in Italy, surrounded by your best friends - you canât think of anywhere else youâd rather be.
As the evening dwindles to an end, everyone slowly begins making their way back to their rooms within the villa. You sit down, unbuckling your heels to finally give your feet a rest. It almost feels like deja vu when a rocks glass is placed down in front of you on the table.
âHi, Evan.â
âHi gorgeous.â
âWhatâs this?â
âA drink.â
âYes, but why?â
He pulls out the chair in front of you and sits down, looking at you intently.
âThought we could have a nightcap before we go upstairs.â
You look around to find that mostly everyone has decided to call it a day. You can see Lucy and Danny walking off hand in hand, going for a stroll around the grounds before they let the wedding officially be over. It just leaves you and Buck, sat in your original places.
âIs this Baileys?â
âYes maâam. Do you like it? I figured you probably wouldnât want another whiskey, seeing as youâve had so many.â
You scoff, trying to fight the grin that threatens to take over your face.
âIâve had, like, four, thank you very much.â
He holds his hands up in mock surrender, making you chuckle as you shake your head.
âCheers, Evan,â you toast, clinking your glass against his matching one. âWe did it. A wedding without a hitch. Mostly.â
âMy shirt will never be white again, but besides that, we did a pretty good job.â
âWe make a good team.â
He looks slightly taken aback by your honesty, trying to hide his smirk.
âYes, we do. A super hot, super funny team.â
âA super hot, super funny team.â
You both laugh, heads thrown back with no cares in the world. Buck shuffles his chair forward so his legs are slotted on either side of you, warm skin radiating into yours. The moonlight is glinting off of his cheekbones, illuminating the light streaks in his hair. Youâre a little tipsy and much too tired to fully fight your feelings anymore.
Heâs beautiful, and youâre sick of denying it.
The two of you finish off your drinks, sat in a comfortable silence beneath the starry night sky. His hand has found its way onto your thigh, thumb rubbing gentle patterns into your bare skin. Youâre sneaking glances at him when he looks away, admiring the way heâs glowing, buzzed off of the alcohol and the excitement of the day. Heâs doing the same with you, soft smile etched onto his face as he watches you gaze up at the stars above your heads.
A yawn escapes you, making both of you chuckle.
âIâll walk you to your room?â
âWell, you better. Iâm the only one of us with a key for that big door.â
He laughs even harder, shaking his head.
âYeah, I forgot about that. If you werenât here, Iâd have slept on the floor in the hallway or something.â
âProbably wouldnât be the first time,â you mutter, standing up and tucking your chair under the table.
âSorry, what was that? Say it again? Hmm? Hmm?â he wraps his arms around your middle, spinning you so your feet are no longer on the floor.
âOkay, okay! Put me down before I throw up,â you shriek, giggling like a teenager.
He places you back down, hands on your hips to steady you. You look up at him, keeping your eyes fixed on his to steady yourself from the dizziness. When you feel ready to go, you clear your throat, willing yourself to walk away before you kiss him stupid.
âWe should go to bed,â you whisper, afraid to ruin the moment.
âYeah?â
âSeparate beds,â you tell him sternly, chuckling when he cackles.
âYes maâam.â
Buck walks you back to your room in a gentlemanly fashion, looping your arm through his to keep you both upright. When you reach your door, your fingers linger on the handle, as if youâre not quite ready to go inside just yet.
Reaching out gently, he moves a strand of hair from your face, fingertips brushing your cheekbone as he does it. You sigh softly, eyes fluttering shut at the sweet contact.
âGoodnight, gorgeous,â he murmurs lowly. âSweet dreams.â
âGoodnight.â
He takes a step back towards his door when you speak again.
âEvan?â
âHmm?â
âThank you.â
âFor?â
âEverything, today. Youâve been a damn good best man.â
âWell, thank you. For being the best maid of honour.â
You nod, smiling like an idiot as you unlock your door and shut it behind you. You take a deep breath when youâre finally inside, throwing down your heels onto the floor and your purse onto the side table. Reaching behind you, your fingers tug at the zipper on your dress, attempting to pull it down.
Itâs only now you realise your dilemma. The zipper is on an awkward place on your back, right where you canât get to. You think quickly back to this morning - one of the bridesmaids doing the dress up for you, pulling the material taut as she fastened it. Youâre not going to be able to get this off yourself.
Finding the purse that you discarded minutes earlier, you aim to find a hair clip. If you can loop a bobby pin into the zipper, you think, you might be able to pull it yourself. You root around in it for a second, before pulling out two phones.
Well, fuck.
Youâd completely forgotten that Evan had given it to you earlier in the evening, worried that it was going to get broken if it stayed in his back pocket. Youâd tucked it away and not thought about it again.
Until now.
Now, youâre realising that youâre going to have to go and give it back. He probably hasnât remembered that you have it, otherwise youâre sure heâd be knocking on the door or yelling across the hallway.
You stand in the middle of your room, with two phones and a stuck zipper, wondering if the universe thinks this is funny.
Youâre certainly not laughing.
â” â”  ·ă â” ăă * · â”
âEvan?â
He swings the door open, facing you in his suit trousers with no shirt on.
âHey. You okay?â
âYeah. I, uh, I have your phone.â
Holding it out to him, his fingertips brush yours as he takes it from you, sending a shiver up your spine.
âOh, shit. I forgot about this. Thanks, pretty.â
âOf course.â
You stand and look at each other for a second, so much left unsaid.
âCan I ask you for a favour?â
âAnything.â
His instantly willingness has butterflies fluttering in your stomach, flitting and lightweight and undeniable.
âCan you help me get my dress off?â
When he smirks and goes to speak, you cut him off quickly.
âThe zipper is stuck, Evan. Alice zipped me up this morning and I canât undo it by myself.â
âThis is a very long winded way of asking me to get you naked, gorgeous.â
You scoff, rolling your eyes.
âIf thatâs what I wanted, I would just ask you, Buckley.â
âUh huh. Sure.â
âCan you help me or not?â
Heâs laughing, now, head thrown back with it. You hate the way it makes your heart sing.
âYou coming in? Or you want me to undress you in the hallway?â
âYouâre not undressing- fuck, youâre annoying.â
Heâs still chuckling when he ushers you inside, shutting the door firmly behind you both.
âHow do you wanna do this? Lights on, lights off? Curtains open or shut? Music? Candles?â
âUndo the damn zipper before I smack you.â
His laughter is rumbling through his chest, contagious in its nature. You want to be angry at him, but you just canât seem to find it in you.
âTurn around, gorgeous.â
You spin to face the door, taking a deep breath as you anticipate his touch. You feel his warmth behind you, fingertips dancing over the skin of your shoulders before they reach your zipper. You canât see him, but you can envisage the sight - his broad chest, thick neck, that beautiful sun kissed glow heâs developed over the past few days. Your lungs heave as the room suddenly feels like itâs a thousand degrees.
Buck slides the zipper down your back slowly, with intent and clarity. When it reaches your coccyx, he stops, resting his other hand on your hip to keep you steady.
You know you should step away, maybe throw him a quick thanks as you leave. But you do believe in fate, whether you like to admit it or not - and this entire night has felt like itâs been written in the stars.
Who are you to deny what the universe is so clearly gifting you?
You let your arms relax, sighing as the dress falls off of you and down to the floor. You step out of it, finally turning around to face Buck wearing nothing but your lacy white underwear. Surprisingly, thereâs not an ounce of self consciousness in your body. The only thing you feel is desire.
For the first time since youâve met him, Evan is completely speechless. His eyes rove over you, drinking in the sight in front of him, and he has to remind himself to breathe.
âYouâre the most beautiful thing Iâve ever seen,â he whispers in awe, fingers itching to reach out and touch you. âThe minute I first saw you, I couldnât believe you were real.â
âEvan?â
âYeah?â
âTouch me, please.â
He grins, surging forward to cup your cheek with one hand while the other finds its home on your waist.
âCan I kiss you?â
âPlease.â
âFinally.â
Buck leans in and presses his lips to yours surprisingly gently, testing the waters. You tangle your fingers into his hair, pulling him as close as possible. He gets the message, reeling you in and deepening the kiss until you canât tell where he ends and you begin.
Youâre being walked backwards and into the wall, pushed up against it for leverage. You hike a leg up over Bucks hip, groaning when the two of you grind forwards at the same time. His hands are everywhere - your face, tits, ass, waist - anywhere he can reach. Itâs like heâs not quite sure where he wants them, as if heâs worried heâll leave somewhere untouched.
âYouâre all Iâve thought about for two days,â heâs muttering into your neck as he leaves open mouthed kisses on your skin. âDriving me crazy.â
âI got myself off last night,â you breathe, eyes fluttering shut when he sucks at the spot under your ear. âThinking about you.â
âFuck,â he moans, sinking down to his knees in front of you. âTell me more. Please.â
Itâs almost biblical, the sight of him. On his knees, practically begging, looking up at you like youâre his saviour. Youâre dizzy with the power, blood rushing straight to your head.
Buck presses kisses into your leg, starting at your calves and moving up. When he gets to your inner thigh, he gazes up at you, pleading with his eyes for you to continue.
âTell me more or Iâll stop,â he says sternly, hooking his fingers into your underwear to pull them down and off.
âOkay, okay,â you pant, dropping your head back against the wall. âI, I- I couldnât stop thinking about your arms in that shirt. The, the, the-â
Youâre stuttering as he licks a stripe up your core, diving in with no hesitation. His fingers are gripping your thighs so hard you know itâll bruise, and you canât wait to feel the imprints in the morning.
âThe?â
Heâs pulled away to look at you with his brow quirked, dirty smirk etched across his face.
âKeep going, gorgeous. You havenât even got to the good part. Neither of us have.â
You scoff at him in defiance, but slide your fingers into his hair to tug him back to where you want him.
âYou looked so strong,â you continue, sighing when his tongue finds your core again. âKept thinking about how easily you could throw me around. Pick me up, sit me on your faceâŠâ
Buck groans, all deep and rumbled, and the vibrations have your legs going weak. He doubles down on his efforts, slipping his tongue inside as his nose nudges your clit. Heâs a fast learner, taking mental note of the spots and pressures that make your knees buckle.
âKeep going,â he mumbles into your core.
âYou keep going,â you retort, pulling at his hair.
He chuckles but obliges your request, sucking your clit into his mouth with purpose. Youâre shaking, holding onto him for dear life as you reach your climax. The moan you let out is borderline pornographic, and it has Buck palming himself over his suit trousers with a groan.
âFuck, Evan,â you pant, chest heaving as you slump into the wall. âYou need to grab me before I collapse. My legs are jelly.â
Laughing as he does it, he stands up and wraps his arms around your middle, holding you against him as tightly as he can.
âYou okay?â he asks, pressing a kiss into your hair.
âBetter than ever.â
He rests his lips on your forehead, both of you breathing each other in for a moment.
âCanât believe you were right across the hallway from me, trying to be quiet while you were getting yourself off,â he murmurs, fingers running up and down your back. âYou should have come over here. I would have helped you.â
âWhereâs the fun in that?â you tease, cupping his face in your hands. âI was still acting like I didnât wanna rip your clothes off back then.â
âKnew youâd crack eventually,â he winks, grinning when you laugh.
You pull him into you for a kiss thatâs all teeth and tongue, clearly telling him exactly what you want.
âYou gonna fuck me, Evan? Or are we just gonna stand here all night?â
He shakes his head with a smirk before throwing you onto the bed, chuckling when you almost bounce back off. As he starts to crawl over to you, you stop him with a foot on his chest.
âNuh uh. Youâre wearing too many clothes. Strip, Buckley.â
âYes maâam.â
Heâs standing up immediately, unbuttoning his pants and pulling them off in one fell swoop. His boxers are next, leaving him stood bare and beautiful in front of you.
âFuck. Youâre not real,â you breathe out, eyes dancing over him.
âOh I am so real,â heâs reassuring, situating himself on top of you.
You wrap your legs around his waist, pulling him down so you can grind your hips into his.
âIâve been waiting two days for this,â you murmur into his lips. âMake it worth my while, please.â
âCareful what you wish for,â he teases, kissing you again with such a force that youâre dizzy.
Buck sucks a bruise into your collarbone, licking a stripe up your sternum and tasting the salt that sits on your skin. Your patience is wearing thinner and thinner, anticipation bubbling up in your veins.
âHowâd you want it?â he whispers into your ear.
âJust- deep. Wanna feel you for the rest of the weekend.â
He groans, a breathless chuckle leaving his lips.
âAnything you want, gorgeous. Iâll give you anything you want. Anything in the world.â
His lust drunk rambling makes you giggle, wiggling your hips into his to hopefully hurry him up. You tug at his hair, pulling his face so itâs level with yours.
âNow, Evan. Canât wait any longer. Please.â
âFuck. Youâre so pretty when you beg.â
He lines himself up, pressing his forehead to yours as the two of you connect. Heâs big and heâs stretching you out just right and you think you might have died and gone to heaven. You both groan, panting into each others mouths.
âFuck, baby. Itâs like you were made for me.â
The baby sends warmth running through both your core and your heart, all the signals setting your nervous system on fire.
âPlease,â you whimper, kissing him with desperation as you tangle your fingers in his curls and pull. âPlease, Evan.â
âIâve got you,â heâs mumbling, pulling his hips back and sliding them forwards with clear intent.
Reaching up beside your head, Buck pulls a pillow down and situates it under your hips, putting you where he wants you.
âWant you to feel me as deep as possible,â he murmurs, tucking his head into the crook of your neck. âWonât be able to walk tomorrow.â
You can only moan at the promise, praying he delivers. Thereâs a shiny sheen of sweat covering his sun kissed skin, making him glow in the moonlight like some sort of angel. Sent just for you.
Buck sets a steady rhythm, not too fast but just fast enough. He clearly knows what heâs doing, and you ignore the pang of jealousy in your chest at the idea of him with another woman, even in the past.
Now that youâve had a taste of this, you donât want to let it go.
Heâs pressing kisses onto whatever skin he can reach - your neck, your collarbone, underneath your ear. His hips never cease, determined to get you both to where you need to be. When he hitches one of your legs over his waist, you canât help but drop your head back, eyes fluttering shut at the new angle.
He tilts his hips upwards, and hits a spot that has you keening. Speech has left you, and all you can do now is take it like you were made for it.
âRight there? Yeah? Thatâs it, isnât it?â
You nod frantically, sucking in a shuddering breath like youâve been under water. Your legs have started to shake, and Buckâs grinning when he thinks about how far he can push you before youâre at your limit.
âCome on, pretty girl. Give it to me.â
Youâre so close you can taste it, desperate to find this release thatâs been building for the last forty eight hours. When Buck moves his hand from your hip to your throat and squeezes just slightly, you snap.
Youâre coming with a breathless moan, back arching into him to plaster your fronts together.
âShit, you look so beautiful when you come. Jesus.â
You manage a soft smile, looking up at him to see those bright eyes staring into yours. He looks entranced, as if heâs staring at a piece in an art gallery. You swipe his hair back from his sweaty forehead, teasing your thumb across his bottom lip. When he sucks it into his mouth, your jaw drops open, mind foggy with arousal.
âThink you can give me another one? Let me see you come all pretty again?â he asks around your digit, tongue laving over your skin.
âMhmm,â youâre agreeing before you can even process it, eager to please.
âThatâs my girl.â
He moves your fingers from his mouth back into his hair as his find your throat once more, applying a little pressure. His hips pick up their pace, faster and harder than before. Heâs fucking you into the mattress, strong arms keeping you from sliding off the bed.
He looks breathtaking, on top of you like this. Heâs so broad, towering over you like heâll shield you from the entire world if he has to. It feels like itâs just the two of you in the whole universe, unbothered by anything or anyone else.
âBuck- I⊠I-â
âI know, baby. Can feel it. Atta girl.â
You pull him down to kiss you as you reach your third climax of the night, arms wrapping around his neck so every inch of you is pressed together.
âThere we go, good girl. Thatâs it, yeah. Itâs yours, baby. Itâs all yours.â
Buck finally finds his release, triggered by yours. His head drops into your neck, his frantic breath tickling your skin. You murmur sweet nothings into his ear, talking him through it as he shudders and shakes. Eventually, he collapses completely onto you, body weight pinning you down.
Youâre both heaving for air, lungs burning as you try to regain an ounce of composure.
He murmurs something into your shoulder, the vibrations of it rumbling through your bones.
âHmm?â
âYou called me Buck.â
A breathless laugh escapes you, silvery and melodic.
âIâve been trying not to for two days.â
âI know. You thought you were making a point.â
âI was making a point.â
âSure, honey. Sure.â
âI hate you,â you grumble, but you canât wipe the grin off your face. âI also hate that weâve just made Lucy and Danny the happiest people ever.â
âOh, shit. I hate it when theyâre right.â
He pulls his head from your neck to look at you, resting his cheek against your chest so he can gaze up and into your eyes.
âIâm sure we can keep this a secret for a little while.â
âYeah⊠we canât.â
You quirk your brow at him in a silent question.
âI told Danny I was gonna marry you the minute you walked into the rehearsal dinner in that red dress. Canât hide how I feel about you, gorgeous. Itâs physically impossible.â
You canât help but laugh, running your fingers through his hair to scratch at his scalp.
âTake me on a date first. Then weâll talk about marriage, okay?â
âYou did say forever, earlier.â
âThat I did. Maybe my heart knew something my brain didnât.â
Buck grins up at you, all blinding and giddy.
âThe best man and the maid of honour, huh?â
âThat old cliche,â you chuckle. âWe werenât the first, and we wonât be the last.â
âYouâll be my last, gorgeous.â
âReal smooth, Buck. Real smooth.â
âBuck,â he whispers, half in amusement, half in awe.
He could get used to this. You both could.

A Life Worth Fighting For
Five Hargreeves x Fem!reader
A/N: It's time we all got our five back. Five needs y/n, in every timeline. If I'm honest, I don't want to read anything more about this Five/Lila relationship. For me that never happened. From now on I'll be posting the stories that I've already finished writing
Warnings: spoilers for season 4 episode 5-6
The air shimmered with energy as Five and Lila landed in yet another timeline, they found themselves in a cozy, well-kept house that radiated warmth and comfort. The scent of fresh coffee hung in the air, mingling with the subtle fragrance of flowers from somewhere nearby.
Lila glanced around, her brow furrowed with suspicion. âThis doesnât look like any of the timelines weâve been to,â she muttered, her hand instinctively moving toward the handle of the knife strapped to her thigh. âToo quiet, too⊠perfect.â
Five didnât respond immediately. He was scanning the room, his sharp eyes taking in every detail. The polished wooden floors, the cushy furniture, the family photos lining the wallsâit was all so domestic, so ordinary. It felt like the calm before a storm, and after seven years of battling against the odds in a timeline where everything was wrong, he couldnât trust it.
âWe need to be careful,â Five said finally, his voice low. âThis place looks safe, but itâs too familiar. We could be in one of those timelines where somethingâs just a bit off.â
âLike that time where your younger self shot at us??â Lila quipped, her lips curving into a smirk that didnât reach her eyes.
âExactly,â Five replied, the memory flashing through his mind. âLetâs find out where we are and whoâs running the show here.â
Just as he was about to suggest searching the house, the door to the living room swung open. Both Five and Lila instinctively tensed, ready for whatever was about to step through.
But what they saw caught them completely off guard.
Another Five stood in the doorway, looking just as surprised as they were. This version of Five was dressed casually, in a button-down shirt and jeans, a far cry from the suits that the time-traveling Five was used to. He looked⊠settled.
âWhat theââ the other Five started, his eyes narrowing as he processed the scene before him. âWhat are you doing in my house?â
Five stepped forward, his gaze locked onto his counterpart. âWeâre from a different timelineâ he said, his voice steady.
The other Fiveâs eyes widened in recognition, then narrowed again with suspicion. âA different timeline? What do you want?â
Before Five could respond, Lila spoke up, her tone laced with annoyance. âListen, mate, we donât want to be here any more than you want us to be. Weâre just trying to get back to our own timeline, but weâve been stuck in the wrong one for seven years. Seven years!â
The other Fiveâs expression softened slightly, though the wariness didnât leave his eyes. âSeven years? What happened?â
Five took a deep breath, trying to steady himself as memories of those long, grueling years came rushing back. âWe got trapped,â he explained, his voice quieter now. âNo way out. We were stuck there for what felt like a lifetime. And⊠well, we ended up together.â
For a moment, there was silence. The other Fiveâs eyes flicked between his counterpart and Lila, his expression growing darker with each passing second. âYou ended up together?â he repeated, disbelief coloring his tone. âYou and her?â
Five nodded, bracing himself for the reaction he knew was coming.
The other Fiveâs jaw tightened, and without warning, he stepped forward and smacked his counterpart on the back of the head. âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â he snapped, his voice a mix of anger and incredulity. âDo you even know what youâve done?â
Lilaâs eyes flashed with anger, but Five raised a hand to stop her from retaliating. âI didnât have a choice,â he said, though even as he spoke the words, he knew how weak they sounded.
âThereâs always a choice!â the other Five shot back, his anger unabated. âYouâre telling me that in seven years, you never once thought about the consequences? About Diego? Heâs her husband in our timeline, for Christâs sake! They have three kids together!â
Five flinched at the mention of Diego, a pang of guilt stabbing through him. âI don't have a girlfriend or wife,â he said defensively, the words tumbling out before he could stop them. âI have no one.â
At this, the other Fiveâs anger seemed to shift, turning into something more like pity. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. âBecause you gave up,â he said quietly. âYou gave up on yourself, and you gave up on your family.â
For a long moment, Five couldnât find the words to respond. The weight of what his counterpart was saying pressed down on him like a lead blanket. Had he really given up? Had he allowed himself to lose sight of everything that mattered because he was too tired, too lost, to keep fighting?
The silence between them grew heavy, filled with all the unspoken regrets and what-ifs of a life that could have been.
âLook,â the other Five said, his voice softer now, âI know how easy it is to get lost in this mess, to lose sight of who you are and what you want. But you canât just throw everything away because things get hard. You have to fight for what matters.â
Five looked down, his hands curling into fists at his sides. He wanted to believe that it wasnât too late, that he could still find the life heâd always wanted, the love heâd convinced himself was out of reach. But the last seven years had left him scarred, beaten down by a world that had taken so much from him.
His thoughts were interrupted by the sound of laughter coming from outside. He looked up and saw that the other Five was gazing out the large bay window, a small smile on his lips.
Five followed his gaze and felt his heart clench at the sight that greeted him.
In the garden, a beautiful pregnant woman was playing with a little girl, who looked to be around four years old. The womanâs laughter was like music, her face glowing with happiness as she twirled the giggling child around in her arms. The little girl had a mop of dark hair and eyes that sparkled with mischiefâeyes that Five recognized all too well.
âThatâs Y/n,â the other Five said softly, his voice filled with warmth. âAnd thatâs our daughter, Maddie.â
Five stared at him, his mind reeling. âI want what you have,â he said finally, his voice barely a whisper. âI want⊠her.â
The other Five nodded, his expression firm but not unkind. âThen fight for it,â he said. âDonât give up on yourself. Donât give up on her.â
Fiveâs throat tightened as he watched them, his heart aching with a longing he hadnât allowed himself to feel in years. This was it. This was what he had wanted, what he had fought so hard to protect but had never truly believed he could have. A family. A home. A life filled with love.
He could have had this. He could have had her.
âI canât believeâŠâ Five started, but his voice broke, and he had to swallow the lump in his throat. âI canât believe I gave this up.â
âYou didnât,â the other Five said, placing a hand on his shoulder. âNot yet. You still have a chance to find her. You still have a chance to make this life your own.â
Five closed his eyes, trying to block out the overwhelming tide of emotions threatening to drown him. He didnât deserve thisâthis kindness, this hope. But he wanted it more than anything. He wanted to find his y/n, to have his own Maddie, to fight for a life worth living.
When he opened his eyes again, he found the other Five watching him, a knowing look in his eyes.
âGo,â the other Five said gently. âFind her. Fight for her.â
Five nodded, and then turned to Lila, who had been watching the exchange in silence. She looked at him with a mixture of sadness and understanding, knowing that whatever they had shared was over.
âWe should go,â Five said softly, his eyes meeting Lilaâs. her expression unreadable, and with a final nod to the other five, he teleported them both away, leaving the other Five standing alone in the quiet house.
A few moments later, the front door opened, and Y/n and Maddie walked in, their faces flushed with happiness from their time in the garden. Y/n smiled warmly at Five, the love in her eyes undeniable as she approached him.
âEverything okay?â she asked, a note of concern in her voice as she noticed the tension in his posture.
Five looked at her, his heart swelling with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and love. He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close as he kissed her gently on the lips.
âEverythingâs perfect,â he murmured against her lips, his voice filled with emotion. âIâm just⊠so happy that I have you. Youâre my one true love, y/n. No one else. Just you.â
Y/n smiled, her eyes shining with love as she leaned into his embrace. âI love you too,â she whispered, resting her head against his chest.
Five held her close, the weight of everything that had just happened slowly fading away as he focused on the warmth of her body against his, the sound of her heartbeat, the soft rise and fall of her breath. This was his life, his family, his everything.
And he wouldn't give that up for anything in the world...timeline or not.

HALF RETURN
PAIRING â© jay x reader
SUMMARY â© your small towns yearly fall festival was your biggest pride and joy but getting your friends to help volunteer was nearly impossible. luckily one of them was stupid enough and too secretly inlove with you to help himself from offering.

AUTHORS NOTE â© Surprise! Itâs been a long time since Iâve sat down and wrote something that I actually enjoyed but this was a lot of fun to write and hopefully the start of me coming back on here in the future. Itâs not my most exciting or hot and heavy piece of work but if youâre looking for a light fluffy small town read then I really hope you enjoy and let me know what you think. Happy fall everybody and thanks for your patience and support as always. NOT AT ALL PROOFREAD
The cold bite of fall had always been your favorite time of year, finding it easiest to romanticize both its pros and its cons.
Which was something you did with just about everything and everyone you ever encountered, making them larger than life as a character in your story before they were leaving and their starring chapter was turning the page with them.
So it was your favorite time of year for many reasons, the realistic ones like the fact it was the slowest months of work and you got more paid time off than you probably deserved, but also because it was so terribly romantic in all the sniffly nose and itchy sweater goodness that came along with it.
Thatâs why it was no surprise to the people around you that you were constantly surrounding yourself with fall activities and hobbies. Your small town didnât offer much, mainly known for biking through the winding roads of the mountains and the sleek dark concrete that always seemed to be wet because of the constant rainfall. It did, however, have a yearly fall festival that you had been volunteering at since you were in middle school.
Youâd always heard people growing up who talked about wanting to get out of your hometown, dreamily describing big cities theyâd seen on vacations and how much different the world was past the mountains and trees.
You never felt the longing to escape something this beautiful and rare and while you figured the world outside was as amazing as they described, you preferred where you had grown up. It was quiet and easy to memorize, everybody knew everybody and treated each other like family so nobody stole from others or treated them poorly. It was easy to love and, in your mind, easy to stay in as you grew old and had your own family.
Despite your own strong feelings towards your hometown, your friends probably wanted to escape it more than the average person.
Youâd spent more than a few dozen hangouts laying in various basements across old couches and listening to them talk about their dreams, dreams that would take them hundreds of miles away from this town and hundreds of miles away from you.
That didnât stop you from excitedly rushing over to the assigned hangout house for the weekend, your bike tires going so fast they were kicking up mud onto your bare legs as you pushed your thighs past your limit to peddle.
You were hurriedly hopping off once you caught sight of the familiar house, leaning your bike against the chipped paint on the side of it and quickly kicking off your dirty shoes as you greeted the mother of one of your best friends. She wasnât at all thrown off by your quick entry or the fact you were disappearing into the basement before she could respond or tell you to clean off your dirty legs, more than used to your group of friends coming and going as the sun set.
The sounds of your pounding footsteps didnât even grab the attention of the group of people hanging out in the basement, only one looking up to watch you as you stumbled in.
âI have great news.â You announced with a large smile, hands extended towards them to really drive forward the importance of your words .
Jay, one of your lifelong friends and the one who had watched you as you entered, raised his eyebrows in question and sat up slightly, a direct opposite of the others who didnât even bother to acknowledge you yet.
âMrs. Potter broke her leg.â You squeaked out the news and clenched your hands into excited fist, your smile only faltering when Sunghoon was turning to look at you with a confused glare and Heeseung stopped plucking at the guitar strings he was tuning to give you a look of bewilderment. The room fell silent and you dropped your hands against your sides in upset.
âI know she can be a bit of a nag but is that really something to celebrate?â Jungwon had an eyebrow cocked as he looked at you finally but you could see a hint of amusement on his face.
You were dramatically groaning and sulking your way over to the couch, flopping down onto the spot next to Jay and failing to fully notice the way he was tensing up for a second and then awkwardly clearing his throat when your leg brushed against his. You wrote it off as him being weary of the mud on your legs getting onto his pants, giving him a quick sorry glance before scooting over a tad.
âOf course Iâm not happy about her broken leg.â You shot Jungwon a glare for his purposefully wrong assumption and he gave you a smile, eyebrows raising and hiding behind his bangs for a second. âBut since sheâs injured, may she heal quickly, that means thereâs an open job at the fair.â
The finality of the news drew out immediate reactions from your friends. Presenting in the form of an eye roll from Jungwon as he immediately lost interest in the conversation, a disbelieving laugh from Sunghoon and an apologetic smile from Heeseung.
âSorry Y/N but I helped you last year.â He was shaking his head and plucking at the strings again, happy he had an excuse and the others didnât.
âThat was six years ago.â You deadpanned at him, remembering all too well considering how terrible of a volunteer the tall boy had been. It wasnât long before he was being asked to step down by the couple who ran it so his position could be filled by somebody who didnât let the popcorn machine overflow or hand out free prizes to any kid that sniffled and gave him their best begging puppy eyes.
He just shrugged at your correction and your frown deepened despite the fact youâd already figured theyâd say no considering theyâd been doing so for almost a decade. You had hoped the guilt from Mrs. Potters injury would have been enough to convince at least one of the four boys.
âYouâve been asking us for all this time and weâve never accepted. Why not ask Jake from the soccer team, doesnât he have the hots for you?â Sunghoon was speaking in a bored tone as he relayed the information, not paying enough attention to notice the way you froze up and stared at him in confusion.
âDudeâŠâ Heeseung trailed off as he shot his friend an annoyed stare, stretching out his leg so he could kick the boys knee in a form of scolding.
âJake likes me?â You sat up straighter and stared at the oldest boy, trusting his word over the other threes. âLike Jake Sim? How long have you guys known about this?â
They exchanged guilty looks between themselves and you turned to look at the boy closest to you for answers instead.
Jay had always been the most mature out of your little group, even when you were all kids pushing each other around on the playground. He seemed like the oldest at times even though Heeseung took that role, strikingly alert and calm when situations caused everyone else to panic. You definitely werenât the closest though friendship wise considering he wasnât the biggest talker, more likely to stand in the corner and take small sips of his drink than actually engage in your loud conversations.
You always figured this was because he didnât have any friends outside of your circle. The other boys had some more casual buddies, take Jake Sim for example, but Jay pretty much stuck to himself if he wasnât with the four of you.
He had a certain energy that you werenât used to seeing growing up, something about him being different than the others and that was including you and your friends. Even his look stood out, jet black hair with piercing eyes that only looked more intimidating considering he primarily wore dark clothes and a hint of smudged eyeliner.
Most people in town, and school growing up, found his presence overly intimidating and youâd heard your fair share of whispers about him and your group of friends.
His attempts to be seen as scary and keep people away from him never was turned onto you and youâd dealt with a lot of teasing from the others boy, making fun of Jay for having a soft spot for you or pouting that he let you do things he always refused to do for them. Heâd glare at them until they shut up and moved on or heâd offer a soft shrug, followed by a hint of a smile when you giggled lightly at his lack of denial.
Thatâs why you were turning to face him now with wide and begging eyes, leaning against his side and wrapping your hand around his hoodie clothed arm to make sure his attention was on you, despite the fact it always seemed to be anyways.
âDid you hear Jake saying he likes me Jay?â Your voice was sickeningly sweet and you could hear the other boys groaning in disgust at your attempts to butter up their friend.
It didnât seem to be working this time considering he was just staring at you with a blank expression, gaze dropping to where your hand was holding him for just a second like he was considering something before he was shrugging softly. You pouted again at his lack of response despite knowing your friend was a man of few words.
âHe wouldnât tell Jay anyways doofus, he knows that he-â Heeseung was laughing as he started to speak and explain something that was abruptly cut off by Jungwon aggressively chucking the magazine he was flipping through in his direction.
The older boy let out a yelp and held his hands up in surrender. You looked back at Jay confused and waiting for him to fill in the blanks, even more lost when you noticed him glaring at Heeseung with a slightly fearful expression under the anger.
You suddenly remembered you were still holding onto his arm and you gently squeezed it to try and bring his attention for you, grateful it worked when he was awkwardly meeting your gaze again and sighing softly. You cocked an eyebrow in silent conversation as you waited for him to tell you what they were being suspicious about, grateful that in the background Heeseung had started to strum at his guitar again and the other two begun to talk about nonsense.
âDo you think Jake likes me enough to help me with the fair?â Your voice was a low whisper as you stared at him, leaning in slightly and missing the way his jaw clenched at your question.
âYou know me and Jake arenât friends Y/N, I wouldnât know anything about it.â He was overwhelmingly glad your friends werenât paying attention anymore because he knew for a fact his voice had taken on that extra sweet tone he only used with you, meeting your volume and also whispering softly despite the fact you both didnât need to.
You were pouting again and not moving away from his face, so busy in your thoughts you once again failed to notice the way his eyes were dropping down to your pushed out lips that were closer to his than usual.
He knew you were just being dramatic, something you commonly were regardless of the situation, but he couldnât stand seeing the expression on your face or the disappointment in your eyes. He was taking in a big breathy sigh, getting your attention again as you squeezed his arm and gave him another wide eyed and hopeful look.
âBut you donât need to ask him anyways because Iâll volunteer with you.â
You were breaking out into a wide smile at the same exact time the other boys in the room were making shocked and angry exclamations, being drowned out by your excited shriek, you closed the distance between you and Jay and leapt forward to give him a hug, pressing his back against the armrest of the couch and practically falling into his lap out of excitement.
âDude what are you talking about? What about band practice?â Sunghoonâs annoyed tone was seeping through your happiness and piercing it with a knife of realization causing you to sit up slightly and look down at Jay in confusion.
âHeâs right, what are you going to do about practice?â You were pouting at him again but slightly above him now considering you were still halfway in his lap with your arms wrapped around his neck. You watched the way his ears were turning red the longer you stayed in that position but you assumed he was just flustered from his plans colliding. âI can ask Jake if youâre busy itâs really no big deal.â
You heard a pained grunt from behind you and turned to see Sunghoon cradling his knee with a hurt expression, you followed his line of sight to see Jungwon glaring viciously at him.
âSunghoonâs an idiot Y/N donât listen to him, Jay is completely free to help you out with the fair.â Jungwon had taken on a sickeningly sweet tone and your nose scrunched up in disgust at the sound of it, looking between the four boys suspiciously.
None of them were meeting your gaze full out but you tried to ignore how weird they were all being about the situation, more excitement creeping back up at the confirmation youâd have help with the fair, especially since it was Jay who was miles more mature than the rest of them. You were squeezing him back into a hug with another happy squeal and he returned it weakly, eyeing Jungwon viciously over your shoulder.
ââ
Youâd spend most of the following Monday morning getting ready for the first day of setting up the fair, tightly wrapping your scarf around your neck and settling your ear muffs just loose enough so youâd still be able to hear while avoiding the cold chill as it got later in the day.
Your morning hot chocolate was abandoned on the kitchen sink when you heard the soft bells chiming from outside your house, typically occupied by numerous other louder ringings but you knew who it was immediately judging by its gentle sound.
Looking out your living room window confirmed your suspicions seeing Jay sitting on his bike at the end of your drive way and staring down at his hands. He was picking at his fingers, a habit heâd adapted after the callouses from his guitar started to form more often.
Your fist was banging on the thick glass roughly, a smile on your face building when he jump slightly on his bike seat and looked up towards your direction with a startled expression. You waved at him and his shoulders released a little bit of tension, turning your hand over and fanning it towards you, silently instructing him to come inside.
He was hesitating for a second before you saw him gently lowering his bike down onto your front yard, bouncing in your stride as you went to open the door for him.
âI figured youâd want some cocoa before you were stuck in the cold all day.â You were quickly explaining your invitation inside to him as soon as you swung the wooden door open, heâd barely gotten up the steps and gave you a surprised look before nodding swiftly in agreement and coming inside.
You walked back to the kitchen with him in tow and tried to ignore the weird nervous feeling building in your stomach. Youâd been alone with Jay countless times so you hadnât thought much about it but the more you reflected back on it the more you realized youâd mainly sat in awkward silence for short durations waiting for the others to come back and ease the tension.
Pouring the steaming hot chocolate into a new mug for him, you told yourself to not take it personally.
Jay had always been on the quieter side and you knew it had nothing to do with you, as far as you were concerned. This was confirmed a bit when you glanced over your shoulder to see him awkwardly standing against the wall near the doorway, watching you as you poured the drinks but quickly diverting his attention around the room when you made eye contact.
You laughed softly, handling the hot handles carefully as you turned slowly, nudging your chin towards the living room so he understood where you were heading as you walked past him.
âThank you again for helping me Jay.â You were speaking in a low voice as you sat on the couch, leaning over to hand him his drink considering he sat an entire cushion away from you. âI know you didnât necessarily want to.â
He wasnât responding out loud, just give you a soft nod of his head and looking down at the cup of hot chocolate awkwardly, twiddling his thumbs around the mugs handle and shifting in his spot on the couch. A frown was instinctively forming on your face at his silence and you wondered for a second if you should make up some excuse to free him of his responsibilities, maybe tell him youâd actually found somebody else to help out.
But then he was glancing at you and the corner of his mouth turned up just enough for you to notice and you felt better, a wide grin breaking out on yours.
âOh.â Your eyes widened suddenly as you remembered something youâd gotten for him as a thank you, quickly telling him youâd be right back and rushing up the stairs to your bedroom, leaving him on the couch.
You returned swiftly with the fabric in your hands to see him sitting tensely in the same spot, waiting to see what youâd gotten so excited about. His eyebrows raised when you approached holding the long string of material and you smiled more at his clear hesitance, sitting directly next to him on the couch and turning to face him.
âWhat is that thing?â He was questioning in a low tone but you could hear the humor in the question, clearly amused by the monstrosity you were holding.
âIâve taken up crocheting recently.â You explained to him with a smile, stretching out the clothing in your hands to show him exactly what it was you were gifting him. âI figured Iâd make you a scarf so you didnât get too cold helping me. It even matches mine.â
Your excitement was clear despite the fact it clearly didnât match your store bought white scarf. The black fabric was lumpy and awkward, random strings sticking out in places they werenât meant to be and barely forming a straight enough line to properly be a scarf.
Jay couldnât have cared less about how the gift looked, he was flushed in the face just due to the fact youâd chosen to make him it in the first place. He figured you would have done it for whoever agreed to help you and he imagined youâd be gifting them all a lot of hand made things if the hobby managed to actually stick, but your smile when you shifted towards him more and indicated you wanted to put it on him was a gift enough in itself.
He watched your face closely as you delicately wrapped it around his neck, crossing the ends so it wouldnât slip off easily or open up.
You were meeting his gaze for half a second and giving him a proud smile before a bright flash from the side of you was startling you both, jumping away from each other and widening the distance you hadnât even realized was closing. You turned your head quickly to see what had made the interruption and a low groan pushed past your lips when you saw your mother standing there with her polaroid camera.
âIâm sorry! You two just looked so cute matching together.â She was giving you a sheepish grin as she poked her head out from behind the blocky camera, eyes teasing and glancing between both of you.
You glanced at Jay to see he had completely tensed up again, jaw tight as he avoided looking at you and stared towards your mother before going back to picking at his rough hands.
She wasnât exactly wrong about the two of you matching, the scarves being the main point of focus but it didnât help that Jay was wearing his typical head to two black clothing and youâd gone for a lightly colored white and tan pallet today, so perfectly opposite it almost looked intentional.
âItâs nice to see you as always Jay, itâs been a while since youâve come around.â Your mothers tone was sweet as she spoke to him but you could see the curiosity on her face, causing you to quickly stand from the couch and butt in.
âThanks mom but we really have to get going, canât be late on the first day.â You gave her a tight smile and instinctively reached your hand backwards for Jay to take it.
It was left empty for a few seconds and you glanced over your shoulder to see him staring at it with confusion before he was setting his untouched mug down and clasping his rough hand in yours. You tugged him forward and he made a small shocked noise as you dragged him out of the house, listening to your mom call out wishing the two of you good luck with the fair.
You both stayed silent as he picked his bike up from off the wet grass and waited for you to unlock yours, your hands moving fast to switch the numbers and remove it from the rickety old piece of wood your mother called a handrail despite barely being stable enough for a twig to lean on it let alone a human.
Suddenly you felt an emotion you rarely did, embarrassment flooding through you as your neck got hotter and hotter under your scarf.
You found yourself wondering what Jay thought of the state of your house even though all the boys had been there over a dozen times and youâd never once considered picking up the messes your mom made in a rush or raking the pile of leaves and twigs surrounding your old porch.
Almost everyone in town was around the same class in terms of wealth and status, with the small exception of families like Heeseungâs who could afford weekly maintenance on their yards and a fully finished basement with little risk of flooding, but he was very generous with his extra space and would slyly cover lunches and treats without making a big deal about it.
Youâd surprisingly never been to Jayâs house and you werenât sure the other boys had been either.
He always insisted on walking home or being dropped off in the center of town claiming he had a ride on the way without giving too much information. Youâd see Sunghoon, who was your usual driver, push it a few times but the uncomfortable look on the older boys face made you take a mental note to not pry for more details yourself.
You sighed when the lock finally popped up and glanced up just enough to see him still watching you patiently, not bothering to make snide remarks about your speed or rush you like your other friends mightâve.
âSorry about my mom.â You started speaking once you pushed your bike over to where he was standing with his, both of you rolling them out of the driveway and down onto the empty street. The potholes were full of the brown rain water and specs of gravel here and there made it a bit risky to go too fast on your bike but you mounted it anyways.
He didnât reply directly other than a shake of his head that indicated he saw no issue with it but the silence was killing you and you waited until his bike was steadily riding next to yours before speaking again.
âSheâs just so overbearing sometimes and itâs totally embarrassing oh donât worry she wonât do anything with that photo, Iâm not even sure the camera fully works I think itâs just for the effect.â You were definitely rambling but it wasnât out of character for you to be filling silence with nonsense and excited monologues.
âYour mom is nice.â He was talking suddenly and it indirectly cut off your next stream of verbal thoughts, surprised at the fact he had actually added to the conversation instead of just giving you soft nods and listening. âAtleast from what I can tell.â
You were staring at him with your mouth parted but only for a few seconds so you didnât run into anything, nodding your head and swapping roles as you fell silent. You ignored the urge to ask about his own mother and turned a corner a little too sharply, thankfully not enough to fall into the dirty street but it still brought a small laugh out of him and you smiled in response.
âItâll be really easy on the first day.â It was better to switch the line of conversation to something less invasive so you could avoid embarrassing yourself further and he went back to nodding as you spoke, riding slightly in front of you with his hands tightening and unclenching around the handle bars.
You mentally decided youâd learn how to make knitted gloves next.
ââ
The day thankfully went as simply as you had promised it would considering there wasnât too much to do yet with the booths just starting to get set up as vendors picked their locations for the year and unpacked their truckloads of goodies.
You couldnât keep the smile off your face as you dragged Jay around, equally as happy about the fair finally happening and the fact youâd managed to have a friend to share it with after so many years of having to keep the excitement to yourself.
Jay was a very good sport about the muddy grass and the chaotic setting of the field that was always used, much more patient with you and your high energy than the other boys wouldâve been. You kept your hand locked around his elbow as you pulled him from vendor to vendor, introducing each familiar face to him and giving him a quick rundown on what they sold and where they came from.
You loved the fair so much because it meant you got to see new faces and hear stories about the towns neighboring yours for once, a large amount of the attendees coming from other places to promote their small businesses. The vending was a small part of the entire celebration but it was your personal favorite.
âThis booth is the best.â You were leaning a bit closer to him so none of the others heard you and took offense to your bias and he glanced at you from the side of his eye. âArenât they beautiful?â
Jay shifted in place as you both studied the half set up booth full of custom made jewelry with shiny metal clasps and crystals youâd never even heard of let alone actually got to see in person.
âShe makes all of these herself?â His voice had taken on the same whisper as yours had and you nodded as you followed his line of sight to see the owner of the booth, an older woman who was hanging up a sign with shaky hands and furrowed eyebrows.
Your hand was falling against your side as Jay moved forward and it lost its place on his arm, a frown forming on your face for just a few seconds before a smile replaced it as you realized what he was doing.
His voice was low and gentle as he spoke to her so you couldnât quite hear what he was saying but she made an appreciative noise and handed the sign over to him so he could help her get it in place, her less shaky hands patting him on the shoulder thankfully once he was finished.
You took a step or two closer which was enough to get his attention and he looked up at you swiftly, eyes widening a bit like he only just now realized heâd left you standing there instinctively.
Surprisingly he was coming back to your side and bending his arm enough to indicate you could hold it again, something you quickly did even if your cheeks flushed a little at the realization youâd been holding onto him the entire day without really even noticing that wasnât something you typically did.
âHow lovely.â The vendor was practically cooing at the sight of you and your mouth dropped open at the implication of both your stance and your matching scarves. âWhat a kind young man, youâre a lucky lady.â
Jay made a noise that could only be described as strangled and you would have laughed at him if it wasnât for the bashful look on the womanâs face, clearly regretting her words and assumption because of his reaction.
âI am, arenât I?â You were giving her a sweet smile before gently patting his arm and watching the side of his face to further bask in his embarrassment.
You could hear her laughing in relief and delight at the sight of the two of you but you were more focused on how red Jay was turning and the way he was intensely attempting to not look at you. You grinned harder before waving goodbye to her and tugging him along, causing him to let out another distressed sound.
âWhat was that?â He was shocking you by speaking up and questioning your motives but you only laughed at the serious tone heâd taken and continued walking.
âI mean sheâs not entirely wrong. Iâd say Iâm very lucky.â You tilted to the side to bump against him and he let out a scoffed laugh that made your smile grow, pleased youâd gotten him to loosen up a little bit.
Youâd taken him a little past the vendors now so the buzz of the moving people and trucks had quieted down, instead being replaced by the clucks of chicken and the soft noises the cows in the barn were making.
The sight of a farm wasnât uncommon where you lived but this one was particularly amazing to you considering the sheer size of it, making it the perfect space to host the crowds and heavy machinery that came along with the fairs open weekend. The large field would soon be filled with food trucks and a ferris wheel standing taller than the trees surrounding you, children running with caramel apples and a petting zoo full of the same animals in the red barn behind you.
âItâs really something.â Jay was filling the silence and you snapped out of your envisioning to glance at him, finding him also looking out into the field and watching the place come to life. âI didnât realize how different it would be from just attending.â
âAtleast you donât find it as boring as the others do.â Youâd stopped walking by now in favor of leaning against a large pile of hay stacks and people watching, not surprised that he remained upright and stoic instead of joining you. âIâm really thankful you decided to help me this year even though youâd miss band practice.â
His head snapped over to you in shock and you laughed at the slightly panicked expression, shrugging your shoulders and picking at some of the loose straws of hay underneath you.
âJungwon wasnât exactly subtle but Iâm grateful nonetheless.â You were standing back up at that and wiping the back of your pants to get the dust off of the fabric, looking back up at him and slightly squinting your eyes against the sun. âYouâre a good friend.â
He was scratching the back of his neck and shifting his foot again awkwardly at the compliment but you were glad to see him nod in light acceptance.
âWanna get some hot chocolate?â
ââ
A week continued on just like that with Jay arriving to your house a few hours before dinner time and the two of you riding to the field together, your voice overly filling the silence with his light hums and brief comments reassuring you that he was still actively listening.
Jay was providing more than just company, actually assisting you when it was finally time to start helping you and doing the volunteer work your other friends were so eagerly avoiding.
He was lifting heavy slates of wood without being asked twice and waiting for further instruction as you added a fresh coat of bright red paint to the apple bobbing booth. You knew youâd made the right choice with having him help (although your options were limited) and the other regular volunteers seemed to agree.
âDidnât realize you were into strong guys.â The voice suddenly in your ear was making you jump and nearly spill your apple cider, glaring at the person joining you for the shock even though you were instinctively leaning closer to her.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â You were mumbling around the styrofoam cup and she laughed mockingly at you, knowing you long enough to see through your indifference.
Cindy was twice your age but youâd gotten along from the moment you eagerly offered to volunteer, her parents being the founders of the fair in the first place which made her the rightful owner once they had passed away a few years ago.
She got on your case regarding just about everything but the tough love was a breath of fresh air considering the type of overbearing and coddling affection you were used to from your mother. It was almost your worst nightmare for her to catch you watching Jay as he helped the other male volunteers move logs and heaps of old wood away from where the mini rides would be installed.
âHoney I know heart eyes when I see them and yours are practically bursting out of your thick skull.â Her hand was reaching over to try to steal a piece of your warm pumpkin donut sat infront of you and you aggressively swatted at it with a scowl.
âHeâs my friend. Iâve known him since I was like basically a baby.â You were trying to keep your tone flat and unsuspecting even though you werenât even quite sure why you suddenly felt on trial.
You werenât even purposefully eyeballing Jay or whatever she had called it but he just so happened to be directly in your line of sight and coincidentally he had removed his zip up at some point, most likely needing the cold chill because of all the heavy lifting he was doing with a surprise ease.
âWell heâs definitely not a baby anymore.â She made a small appreciative noise and you turned to her with your nose turned up in disgust, taking a moment to soak in her typically eccentric outfit.
Cindy was definitely one of the most interesting people in your town aesthetic wise, big chunky earrings being used as decorations in her large unkept hair and layers and layers of jarringly opposing patterns and fabrics. It somehow worked on her and you always loved the fact she looked like a little halloween trinket come to life.
âThatâs disgusting, you could be his mother you know.â Your eyebrows were furrowed but she knew better than to take your annoyance serious, shrugging her shoulders and directing your attention back to the topic of the conversation with a ring covered hand.
âHe watches you about as much as you watch him.â She had the same tone she always had when she felt like she was proving you wrong and in this case, she was. Jay was eyeing the two of you as you spoke but trying his best not to make it obvious, getting distracted enough to trip over a log and nearly crash into one of the bigger burlier men working.
He was far enough away that you couldnât hear the interaction but you laughed at the glare he received and the way he threw both of his hands up in surrender, backing away and giving you a quick embarrassed glance before picking up the log he tripped over.
âOh what a mess that boy is.â She was successfully stealing the rest of your donut and you sighed in defeat, leaning against her more and letting her signature vanilla scent hit you full force. âDoesnât speak much does he.â
âYou talked to him?â You didnât quite understand why that peaked your interest so much but she chuckled at the eagerness in your question, nodding her head and chewing the soft donut for a few seconds before answering.
âHe came over to old Betsyâs booth when she was using the restroom and I was filling in for her.â She seemed to miss the irony in her calling somebody around her age old and you didnât dare point it out to her. âKept eyeing the necklaces.â
You couldnât think of a time Jay wouldâve gone back to the jewelry stand without you and your eyes narrowed further.
âWell did he buy anything?â
âDonât remember.â She hummed the words so casually but you knew better than to believe her, sitting up off her shoulder and turning your body so you could fully face her with a stern look. Your normally bubbly exterior was easier to lose than you usually preferred around your strange friend but you assumed it was because she never once minded you on your grumpiest days.
âYou so totally remember.â Your finger raised accusingly and she glanced at it with a quirked eyebrow, her large red hexagon framed glasses almost blocking her amused expression. âCindy what did he buy?â
You assumed she was going to make another excuse to not answer you directly but the universe, in all itâs twisted ways, actually offered a real one in the form of one of the senior volunteers calling for her attention and waving at you before urgently fanning her over.
âLooks like Iâm needed elsewhere.â The air of mischief surrounding her had intensified as your own lighthearted annoyance followed suit and you rolled your eyes as she glanced back out into the field. âYouâve got better company incoming anyways.â
She was gone just in time for Jay to reach the two of you and he watched her back for a few seconds as she strolled away, a silent question floating around his furrowed eyebrows as if he was worried he was the reason sheâd left so suddenly.
Your friend typically had an anxious energy surrounding him but it bothered you more so right now so you cleared your throat to get his attention and smiled when he finally gave it, patting the spot Cindy had just left empty and not scooting over when he jumped into a start and walked around the table to sit next to you.
âI heard youâve met Cindy.â You nudged him with your elbow and he titled his head to grin at you in the most genuine way youâd seen from him in all your years of companionship, eyes squinting against the sun as it slowly set with a certain lightness you quite enjoyed. You figured the hard work had made him too tired to keep his guard as high as usual and you briefly considered asking the volunteers to give him more logs to move.
âSheâs a character.â He took a second to form the sentence and it came out in slow patches like he was trying to find the nicest word to describe her eccentric ways. Your mouth was opening to inform him it was okay to be offput by her before he was talking again. âShe reminds me of you actually.â
That shut you up and you felt a sudden unnecessary guilt for not immediately knowing if he was complimenting you or doing the opposite.
You hadnât even noticed you were leaning against him again until he stiffened up at your unusual reaction, an apologetic look on his face making you feel even worse. It was beginning to frustrate you that you couldnât stop embarrassing yourself in front of him, the ability beyond foreign and not something youâd ever even considered before.
His hand was cold when you reached out to place yours over it, not exactly holding but just letting your palm rest on top of his knuckles.
âIâm glad actually. I think sheâs probably the most interesting person on earth.â You were watching his reaction to both your statement and the touch before forfeiting first and looking past him in the direction sheâd gone.
âI doubt that.â He sounded strangely heavy and it was a tone unlike any youâd heard from him, immediately bringing your gaze back to his face in an attempt to decipher it.
Jay remained as stoic as he usually was and you were suddenly glad for the lowered sun, hoping the lack of lighting in the field managed to hide the light dusting of your cheeks.
ââ
It was almost refreshing to be back in the basement with the rest of your friends, not having any type of embarrassment in the pit of your stomach since Jay currently wasnât here and for the first time in two weeks you werenât having to overthink why you were feeling so weird.
Even though the other boys were trying their best to make you as awkward as possible, all staring at you with questioning eyes after Jungwon asked how itâd been volunteering this year.
âItâs fine.â You knew as soon as you gave a vauge answer that they were going to get suspicious, your eyes slowly closing in regret as they got an excited buzz to them and immediately hounded in on you like a pack of dogs (or over enthusiastic kittens).
âThis is the first time since we were preteens youâve talked about the fair and not went on for hours.â Even Sunghoon was being unusually perceptive and leaning forward on the edge of his arm chair.
âCan you guys not be super annoying about this?â You winced as you said it, already prepared for how rowdy theyâd get at the admittance that there was something to be annoying about in the first place.
Not even Heeseung was exempt from the almost childlike giddiness they all had now and you rolled your eyes at the way they were all smacking eachother and overlapping sentences of âI told you soâ adjacent statements.
Luckily you were saved by the sound of Heeseungâs mom calling your name from the top of the stairs, shouting it a few times to try and outmatch the volume of all the boys talking at once. You managed to hear her exasperated tone beneath it and you left them to their theatrics without another word, finding her standing in the kitchen with the phone in her hand and an impatient look on her face.
You glanced at her apologetic before taking the phone from her and waiting until she was back at the table doing her crosswords before you actually put it up to your ear.
âHello?â You knew it wasnât likely to be your own mother calling about your whereabouts considering she ever rarely actually did, trusting you and knowing you were an adult who didnât need checking in when you were usually only ever at a handful of places.
âY/N?â Jays voice coming through the speaker was enough to make your stomach form a tight knot, not even fully processing the breathy and shaky way he was speaking before understanding something was wrong.
âWhere are you?â You werenât sure why it was the first thing you thought to ask him and he took a few painful seconds to even answer, your hand tugging at the chord connected to the wall anxiously as you waiting for his voice to come back and let you know he was still on the other end.
He was hushed when he muttered the address too and you felt little to no guilt about rushing out of the house without saying goodbye to the boys, formality and patience totally fleeing your mind as you picked up your bike off the side of the house and took off down Heeseungâs long smooth drive away.
Your thighs were burning as you made your way across town to the rundown area Jay had given an address for, heart racing in a similar pace to the buzzing in your ears that had started as soon as you were hanging up the phone.
The sun was setting now and you knew it was only a matter of time before your mother started to wonder why you were gone far past dinner but you couldnât even begin to think about that or your friends realizing you werenât coming back down or Cindy checking her jeweled watch when you didnât show up for your usual hot donut before volunteering.
Nothing else was currently even a drop more important than Jay and the way he rushed out the address, one you didnât even need an explanation for to understand what it was. The hesitance in the delivery told you exactly where you were heading and that was only part of the reason you felt sick as you rounded the corner sharply into the barren seeming neighborhood.
The houses with boarded windows and bright red ripped notices on the doors wouldâve led you to assume the place was abandoned if it wasnât for the mass of bright lights coming from the house on the end of the street.
You forfeited your bike in the middle of the road in exchange for running and you skidded to a stop when you realized youâd managed to completely sprint past Jay, not noticing him considering the way he was practically hunched in on himself and missing his usual stoic expression as he stood under a large overgrown tree.
Instead his face was an eerie combination of absent and horrified, gaze meeting your wide eyes but leaving you with the terrible feeling he was looking straight through you.
âWhat happened?â Your voice seemed to echo and his face was red and blue from the lights behind your tensed shoulders, your hands being painted with the same shades when you were reaching up to cup his cold cheeks.
He had the scarf youâd made for him around his neck and your heart ached at the idea he mightâve been on his way to meet up with you before whatever had occurred did. Your thumb brushed over its bumpy fabric when it smoothed over his skin and he practically leaned into it despite your friendâs usual disinterest towards physical touch.
âCan we go somewhere else?â It took you a few breaths to even realize heâd been the one to speak and you nodded instinctively, staying frozen even when he stood up and by default placed himself directly infront of you.
Your boot bumped against his shoe when you went to take a step back and he quickly looked away from the house and continuously flashing sirens.
You were wondering if it was a good idea to leave or if he still was needed by the officers scattered throughout the yard and near the patrol cars, sparing them a glance over your shoulder as you started to follow him. You didnât meet any of their eyes enough to understand what you should do but there was no way you were going to leave Jay alone so you sighed and followed after him.
He was leading you around the back of the house where you could see a tilted garage and a bunch of shrubbery, almost enough to be completely hiding the car underneath it all.
Jay didnât look at you once as he started to pull twigs and piles of bushes off the hood and windshield, failing to realize the way you were hugging yourself now to fend off the cold and anxiously peering back around the side of the house as you waited for somebody to come and try to stop you from leaving. Nobody came and eventually he was stopping to take a harsh breath before opening the door and looking at you expectantly.
Despite your nerves, you still followed suit and climbed into the old car. The air was stuffy and you could almost taste how long itâd been since it was put to any use especially obvious with all of the dust lining the dashboard and creating a fine film over the cup holders and stick shift that Jay was wrapping his hand around without a second thought.
âI didnât know you had a car.â Your voice was filling the car only after youâd been driving in silence for a good fifteen minutes, leaving the town limit a few blocks ago and entering a long stretch of road youâd never been down before.
It was true considering there had been over a few dozen times everybody had complained about the lack of cars in the group, instances where youâd had to cancel plans because it just wasnât manageable with your bikes. Even Heeseung didnât have a license even though his mom was always telling him heâd have access to the family van sitting in the garage if he just took the road test.
You didnât miss the fact that there was a lot you didnât know about Jay, clearly more than you even realized considering how confused you were tonight by all the missing pieces.
âIt was my dadâs.â He was finally glancing over at you but his tone of voice let you know this wasnât something he wanted to talk about further, nodding your head in understanding and watching him as the trees grew larger around you and the road twisted and turned.
âAre you feeling okay?â You didnât really know what to ask him considering how little you knew about the situation but he was still nodding slowly and it looked genuine from what you could tell.
You decided it was best to just stay silence so you didnât accidentally say the wrong thing and Jay took a deep breath before doing the same thing, neither one of you speaking for the next thirty minutes as he drove and stared ahead at the road.
You opted for looking out the window at the large stretches of land and water, roads now slick and shiny with the rain that had been falling during your drive and making the night even more gloomy than it already was. You hoped your mom had seen the weather and assumed you were staying with a friend tonight instead of riding your bike home, your stomach turning a bit at the idea of her calling around to try to make sure you were safe.
Heeseung or one of the other boys knew to cover for you if she called his phone, repeating the practiced line that you had fallen asleep on the couch and forgotten to check in with her beforehand.
But then the worry would land with them and that thought made you frown too.
You werenât yet regretting following Jay but you hoped youâd get to where you were going soon, suddenly wondering if he even had a destination in mind or if he was just going to keep driving forever and ever.
It didnât take long to get your answer considering he was pulling into an empty parking lot sitting above a small hill that led down to what you assumed was a dark beach, a cold chill from the water filling the car once he turned it off and the low rattle of the engine disappeared.
He was just sitting there in the drivers seat with a faraway look on his face, picking mindlessly on the callouses covering his hands like he always did.
You were suddenly remembering what was the cause of the lump in your coat pocket, sitting up a bit and reaching your hand inside until it wrapped around the soft fabric youâd been molding for the past two weeks.
Jay was already watching you curiously and his eyes flickered up to yours when he realized what he was you were now holding and presenting out to him across the center console, a hopeful look on your face as you nudged it in his direction.
âYou made these?â His question had an obvious answer but you had a feeling he just wanted to hear you say it.
âThey match your scarf.â You shrugged like it wasnât a big deal even though youâd gone through an entire roll of fluffy yarn to make the small pair of gloves, messing up the instructions from your old crocheting book numerous times before you finally got them to a functional point.
Your heart was filling with pride when he was pulling them on and flexing his finger inside, seemingly fitting thankfully considering all you had to go off of for sizing was the amount of time youâve stared at his hands playing guitar.
âTheyâre perfect.â He looked so sincere and thankful that it threw you for a few seconds, your eyes widening as you nodded your head and smiled at him shyly. âThank you seriously.â
âItâs no problem. Did you want to get out?â The intensity suddenly filling the air was making your cheeks flush and you wanted nothing more than to be out of the old car, even if it met facing the cold chill waiting for you outside.
He seemed like he was considering it for a few seconds before he was opening his door and stepping out, making his way over to your side before you could process how fast he left and you faltered when he was opening your door for you.
Thankfully he didnât seem to take your delayed reaction to heart and you were scrambling out before another awkward second passed by, feeling even more grateful when he was unexpectedly bending his arm and letting you wrap your hands around it like you would at the fair.
It brought a level of comfort to you that you hadnât begun to understand fully but you welcomed it all the same, walking closely to him as you left the parking lot and the hard concrete under your feet turned into wet feeling sand that slowed your pace down automatically.
The beach was fogged over from the cold weather and you could barely see the water due to the darkness now completely surrounding you, relying solely on the sound of the waves crashing against the shore to let you know you were getting too close.
You and Jay walked in silence like that for a few minutes, alongside the water but far enough that it was only barely touching the sides of your boots whenever the waves rolled over and spread out into the sand.
He was eventually pausing in his stride and you glanced at the side of his face expectantly, seeing that same blank look he had when sitting in the car and feeling your heart tighten with the urge to help him any way you could. You werenât even sure where to begin but it felt right to slowly sit down onto the sand, holding his arm loose enough that he could feel you moving before you tugged him down too.
You smiled a bit when he sat quickly beside you and you warmed even though the floor was cold and damp underneath you.
You decided to keep holding onto his arm even though you werenât walking anymore and that left you practically hugging his side while you sat facing him with his own gaze towards the water, your legs pressed up against his and his glove covered hands crossed over his stomach cautiously.
Thereâd been dozen of instances where you had to sit in close proximity to Jay but never once had you experienced one where you were having to silently tell your heart to calm itself incase he could feel it beating out of control.
âAre you alright?â You couldnât physically take the silence in the air anymore and he looked at you as you spoke.
His gaze was heavy but as kind as it always was when situated on, a tiredness to him that you werenât used to seeing. You squeezed his arm and they softened even further while his head tilt to the side at your affectionate gesture.
âIâm sorry I took you all the way out here. I wasnât really sure where else to go so I just drove.â He was quiet as he spoke and you almost didnât hear him over the crashing waves.
You suddenly felt a twinge of guilt for being so skeptical about following him into the car and allowing him to leave the limits of your town.
âI donât mind, itâs a beautiful place.â You heard the irony of the statement at the same time amusement passed over his face, both of you knowing it was far too dark for you to visually appreciate the beach. âItâs cool you can drive.â
He actually did laugh at that, a light one closer resembling a scoff but it seemed genuine nonetheless. You didnât expect an explanation for him keeping his ability a secret and he didnât offer one.
You fell into another lapse of silence but you found more comfort than awkwardness in this one, enjoying the closeness of the moment and trying to put yourself into his mind for a second.
Jay was all you could see with how low the light was, just the side view of his face that youâd been accustomed to for such a large part of your life that it was almost odd to be feeling so overwhelmed by the sight of him. It definitely wasnât the time to be trying to understand why you had been feeling so off kilter around him these days but you knew the clock was clicking for you to figure it out.
His jaw was tense like it got whenever the boys got too rowdy in public or the times in high school when people would whisper in the halls as your small group passed.
It wasnât a secret that Jay had a certain protective nature surrounding him but your silent friend had never looked as bothered as he did right now.
You were wrestling with yourself in your own mind and trying to shake the idea that he was possibly uncomfortable with your sudden clinginess. You had a reminder on a constant loop that he was the one who initiated the small contact almost everytime and his cheeks flushed red almost as much as yours did whenever you squeezed his arm in yours.
âMy mom got arrested.â His voice was cutting off your rampant irrelevant thoughts and your mouth parted slightly in surprise from the sudden admission, immediately snapping shut when you noticed him watching you from the side of eye.
âJay.â You went to speak words of comfort but his lips pursed and his eyes shut for a second like he was pained so you swallowed your sentence and waited for him.
âItâs not a big deal and itâs not the first time or the last.â He was beginning to rush through the words like he didnât think he could manage to get them all out and you watched him carefully, forgetting the cold weather and the wetness coating the fabric of your pants. âI called you because I knew seeing you would make me feel better but I donât really need to talk about it or anything.â
âThen we donât have to talk about it.â Your voice was firmer than usual and his shoulders relaxed.
You werenât even thinking when your hand was reaching up to touch his face, turning his head towards your direction so he didnât really have a choice but to look at you.
Your hands were undoubtedly freezing against his skin but you still took the opportunity to absentmindedly rub your thumb against his cheek and jaw, observing the way he almost melted into the touch with something close to pain in his expression.
This was nothing like the arm holding or the hands brushing when you passed him a paintbrush, crossing over the line of things you could fit in the category of your newly developed friendship without the connection of the group. This was something else entirely and you chose not to place it anywhere for now, letting it exist here on the beach without the weight in your chest following along.
âDid it make you feel better?â Your voice was almost a whisper but you had no doubt he heard you considering how close your faces had gotten now that you made him look at you fully. âSeeing me?â
You knew the answer already when you asked it but you still werenât prepared for the way he softly nodded while leaning into your touch further, eyes big and puppy like in direct contrast to his usual stern and more feline gaze. Vulnerability had completely taken over his typical stoic attitude and you felt a surge of pride for getting to see him like this.
Jay had been consuming your thoughts since you started hanging out one on one and it felt far too important of a moment to let pass you by.
You barely had to shift yourself forward to be able to kiss him but the slightest sign of you moving spurred him to close the gap instead, pushing his lips against yours and taking you by surprise.
The beach was almost quieter as the two of you kissed softly, the waves sounding like they were further away since all you could focus on was the warmth radiating off of him. You were flushed from how delicate he was with you and how it lacked any real heat considering it was much more of a romantic kiss than you both trying to turn the other on.
He kept his eyes closed when you pulled away from eachother and you rested your forehead against his, watching his expressions closely and not wanting to lean back incase the lack of touch made him reconsider what had happened.
Youâd be stupid to not understand Jay had always had a soft spot for you but just because the boys teased him about it didnât mean he actually felt like you were somebody special. He was a gentleman in all aspects of his interactions so you werenât certain enough to bet on the fact he had any type of feelings for you that would make him see this kiss the way you did.
âPlease donât regret this tomorrow.â He said it in one quick whisper and your heart twisted at the same time your eyebrows furrowed in confusion.
âI wonât, of course I wonât.â You hoped your voice was firm enough to make him believe you but you could tell by the look on his face that he was still skeptical.
You didnât know how else to prove it to him besides kissing him again so thatâs exactly what you did, hands cupping his face and pulling him into you much more passionately than you had the first time. This go around there was a lot more movement and a soft noise escaped you when you felt his gloved hand on your knee.
It was hard to connect the fact the Jay you were kissing was the same Jay youâve known almost your entire life. He was the same boy who used to scowl on the swings at the playground and silently pay for your snacks at lunch or hold the door for you when entering Heeseungâs house.
You were almost reverting back through all your platonic memories with him as you kissed and seeing him in a different light than you had before.
This time when you stopped kissing you fully leaned into him until you were practically hugging without having your arms around each other, the sudden longing to just feel him close overwhelming you as you tried to pretend it was simply because of the cold and not because he opened up apart of himself to you tonight and that seemed to be the final piece you needed to understand how you felt.
âWe should go, youâre going to catch a cold.â He was speaking again in a far away voice and you wouldâve declined and asked for just a few more minutes but he was already standing up.
You suddenly felt the most distant you had in a long time from him and your throat was tightened even when he offered his arm in your direction, the action coming across more robotic now than him actually reaching out for you.
It was hard to not overthink considering he was driving you both home in silence, the hills and forest of the town coming into sight as you left behind the empty stretches of road and sky above the ocean.
For once you found yourself looking out the window with longing as you passed the welcome sign back into where youâd grown up, finally slightly understanding why most people had a hard time coming home after being somewhere else for a change.
You didnât stop thinking about the beach or the road leading even further away until he was pulling into your driveway, the car making a funny scraping sound as it pushed itself up the slight incline.
Jay sighed softly, the first noise heâd made in a long time that wasnât covered by the radio commercials and the heat running on high with that loud rattling noise, shutting the car off completely as you both sat there in silence.
âAre you able to go home? If you need somewhere to stay Iâm sure my mom wouldnât mind as long as you stayed on the couch.â You were speaking swiftly with your eyes slightly widened and he smiled at you gently even if it didnât quite seem genuine.
âIâm alright, Iâll figure it out.â His tone held a stubborn finality that you didnât bother trying to question again even though it hurt your heart to think about him searching for a place to stay.
You almost begged him to just come in and warm up for a bit, maybe use your phone to call some of the boys and ask them if he could go there before he just started to drive around in circles but you decided against it.
Instead you leaned far enough that the middle console was pressing against your stomach and you kissed him softly on his cheek, rubbing the clumpy fabric of his scarf before sitting back in your seat and smiling shakily as you tugged the door open and stepped back out into the cold.
âIâll see you tomorrow?â Your head cocked so he understood it was a question you wanted answered and he took a few moments before he was nodding his head and starting the car again, lifting his hand off the steering wheel for a brief second in a wave as you closed the door.
ââ
Jay didnât show up the next day but you still stood at the end of your driveway with your bike in your hands for twenty minutes, shifting from the cold and slight embarrassment even though nobody was around to see you left hanging.
You filled your mind with the calming thought that he was just busy and heâd show up any minute panting from rushing over here, or maybe heâd even bring his new car and you wouldnât have to ride your bikes in the cold anymore.
Youâd have a good day setting up the fair and you wouldnât have any awkward silences about the kiss, infact maybe youâd even kiss again when he dropped you back off at home later.
The thoughts and daydreams only entertained you until half an hour had passed and now youâd officially be late so you had no choice but to flip up your kick stand with your foot and mount your bike with a deep frown.
Even then you still felt guilty about leaving incase Jay showed up late at your house and found out you had left without him.
The rational part of you knew that wasnât going to happen and if anything he could come to the fair and just meet you there but you could tell from the first hour that he wasnât going to and he wasnât anywhere waiting for you to come back. He simply hadnât shown up and you were beyond stupid for thinking otherwise all morning.
It actually hadnât even crossed your mind that he wasnât going to show up.
You ran through the possible scenarios, coped with the inevitable tension in the air and the chance of an extremely awkward conversation where you had to confess your newfound feelings for him.
Youâd even practiced over how you were going to say it all morning as you got dressed down to the last word but not once did you think he would simply leave you there alone like a completely fool.
Jay was a lot of things, he was reserved and shut off and maybe a little bit blunt at times but he was certainly never cruel and especially not to you. Your friends seemed to agree considering how appalled they were when you stomped down the steps with wet leaves wrapped around your boots and frowned as you explained what had happened.
âWait you kissed? You like Jay?â Heeseung seemed utterly confused and you couldnât tell if he was playing up the surprise or if he genuinely wasnât paying attention to the obvious signs.
âDude have you even been here? Thatâs not the problem, what do you mean he didnât show up?â Sunghoon was leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and his hands cupping his face in distress.
âI shouldnât have kissed him without asking how he felt about me first.â You ignored his question and shook your head as you slouched back into the couch, more upset with your self now than anything else.
All the boys looked around at each other in shock and the air got heavy again like it always seemed to whenever the topic of you and Jay came up. Your eyebrows furrowed into a glare and you settled it onto Jungwon who looked the most guilty, hoping heâd spill whatever it was that they werenât saying to you.
âJay is totally into you.â He was letting it out in one breath of air and the other boys collectively rolled their eyes and swatted at your friend. âHe has been forever and we all totally make his life hell because of it.â
âWhy on earth would you guys do that?â You were practically yelling now even though it was hard to stay mad at them when they all looked so guilty. âJust a few weeks ago you were trying to get me to ask out Jake Sim.â
âWe were trying to get him to finally grow a pair and make a move.â Heeseung made you groan at the crude wording but despite your annoyance you actually understood the ways they were trying to help especially since it had actually worked up until you screwed it up by kissing him.
You relayed this thought to them and they looked just as stricken by the fact Jay had not followed up after your kiss as they did the first time you said it.
They did their best to cheer you up with covers of your favorites songs and less argument filled board game rounds but you couldnât stop the hole in your heart from deepening everytime you thought about it. Your anger towards yourself slowly transferred to him instead as the night went on but even that felt wrong.
Opening night of the fair was finally happening tomorrow and you could barely feel the usual excitement, even when all the boys told you they would be coming to keep you company.
You gave them a soft smile before bidding them goodnight and you truly did appreciate what they were trying to do but it wasnât the outcome you wanted.
That still didnât stop you from waking up early the next morning and getting yourself ready, pinning your stray hairs back with cheap pumpkin decorated pins youâd had for a decade and pulling on the new pair of gloves you made (finished off with much neater edges than Jays had been).
The others were going to arrive any moment to accompany you so you sat on the couch finishing your hot chocolate and tapping your feet against the carpet with anticipation, doing all you could to ignore the pit in your stomach so you could still have fun and appreciate all the hard work you and the other volunteers had contributed.
Rough honking from outside made your head pick up expectantly and you set your mug on the coffee table before rushing to the window and smiling brightly when you saw all of your friends waving from inside an old car you didnât recognize.
It wasnât until you opened the door that you caught sight of the driver and you faltered a bit, long enough that he had stepped out onto your driveway and waved at you with a sheepish expression.
âHey Y/N, hope itâs okay that I tag along.â Jake Sim was standing infront of your house and he apparently was one of the few people your age in town that owned a car and even worse, your friends were giving you encouraging looks behind his back.
Heeseung lost his thumbs up when you glared at him through the windshield but you made sure to smile at Jake reassuringly.
âOf course itâs okay Jake, itâs good to see you.â You tugged open the passenger seat door and tugged at Heeseungâs hoodie until he was groaning and unbuckling, squeezing into the backseat with the others and allowing you to be in the front.
You let the boys talk loudly and play their music while you sat in silence during the short drive to the field where the fair was being held, finding it harder to ignore the fact somebody was missing when all you could think about what your drive back from the beach.
Jake quietly humming wasnât enough for you to forget how Jay kept a tight grip on the steering wheel or shifted in his seat at a red light.
The comparison of the two definitely wasnât fair especially since you were almost positive your friends had begged Jake to give you all a ride under some faux promise that you would find it kind enough to give him a shot. He was always nice to you in school and definitely wasnât trying anything sleazy now, instead arguing with Jungwon about the speed limits and his backseat driving.
Your heart warmed the second you were approaching the field and you could see the Ferris wheel peaking over the trees, car slowing down to allow the groups of people and large families to cross the street in front of you.
The turn out was probably the biggest youâd seen yet and even your friends were making noises of excitement as they peered out the windows and took in the rows of games and smaller kiddy rides.
âWoah this is awesome.â Jake sounded genuinely amazed from beside you and you glanced back over your shoulder to smile at him. âYou guys did a great job.â
You knew he mustâve been referring to the larger group of people who volunteered but you still couldnât help but think of all the work Jay helped do and how much he contributed this year.
âThank you Jake.â
ââ
It was almost like a homecoming as you walked across the field and let the mud build up under your boots, a caramel apple in hand and the other wrapped around Heeseung as he laughed and tried his best to win your group another stuffed animal despite the fact the three boys behind you were holding two each.
âHoly shit.â You couldnât help but be impressed when he knocked all the pins down again even though you quickly covered your mouth apologetically when the mother of a child near you sent you a sharp glare.
âHere you go madam.â Heâd put on a funny proper voice as he handed you the small pink stuffed lamb and you mockingly curtsied at him as he squinted his eyes against the sun and surveyed the area. âAlright going to go attempt to brave the portapotties, wish me luck.â
âHold your breath.â Jungwon was quick to chirp behind you and you groaned at the imagery, pulling your arm out of Heeseungâs so he could half jog over to the bathrooms and feeling a slight chill run over you at the loss of body heat.
Somebody was clearing their throat from beside you and your eyes widened a bit as you turned to see Jake standing there now, a sheepish expression on his face with his elbow angled at you invitingly. He mustâve picked up on your walking habit by now and you smiled bashfully at him before accepting his arm.
âAre you having a good time?â You started walking together as you spoke quietly, your two friends behind you talking loudly in weird voices as if they were making their animal prizes communicate.
âItâs beautiful.â He actually sounded like he meant it, tone a little breathy as he turned his gaze to the Ferris wheel and nodded appreciably. âI understand why you love it so much.â
You were actually enjoying his company despite the ache in your chest and you were glad he got to tag along with all of you, hoping youâd get the chance to see him with the boys more often including the one you were missing the most right now.
Itâd been a few hours into the fair and you knew Jay could come another day by himself if he really wanted to but the thought of him missing opening day and feeling how special it was hit you harder than you wished it would and you were almost antsy for your friends to leave so you could go and mope to Cindy and ask her for some advice.
âLook who I ran into.â Heeseung sounded excited from behind you as he returned from the bathrooms and your eyebrows raised curiously, turning in unison with Jake.
Your mouth dropped open a bit when you saw Jay standing there awkwardly, hands in his pockets and a torn expression on his face that turned into one of confusion when he realized you were linking arms with Jake Sim. He didnât say anything and neither did the others boys, not at all matching Heeseungâs enthusiasm and instead sending you glances like they werenât sure what reaction was appropriate.
To make matters worse, Jake clearly wasnât reading the energy and instead was nudging your side affectionately and giving Jay a wide smile.
âAnd you thought he wasnât going to show up.â He didnât know the history behind the two of you or anything that had happened so you couldnât really fault him for his embarrassing comment, realizing now he mustâve caught wind of some of the things the boys had said about you not expecting Jay.
The comment was enough to break the tension in the air for something much worse and you watched the boy in question purse his lips and nod his head in bitter understanding, pulling a hand out of his pocket to rub the back of his neck.
âWell this was nice but Iâve gotta go.â He didnât wait for anybody to say any words of parting and instead he was turning on his heels and leaving.
You scoffed and removed your arm from Jakes gently, stomping away from them to follow behind Jay and trying to ignore the clueless boys confused questioning to your friends about what he had said wrong.
âYouâre just going to leave?â You waited until you were closer to the barns to speak even though you were pretty sure he knew youâd been following him. âYou donât have anything you feel like you want to say to me?â
He looked surprisingly calm when he turned around to face you but your anger didnât settle much even when you saw the hurt and lost expression he had, staring down at you and all of your fury like he thought he deserved it.
âWhat is there for me to say?â His voice was low and you frowned again at how defeated he seemed, how easy it was for him to end the conversation even though you felt like there was a thousand things being left unsaid. âI donât want to interrupt your time with Jake.â
You let out a noise that was close to a laugh but without any sign of amusement, anger taking over any type of sadness or confusion you felt about the situation. He wasnât saying it like he was at all angry at you for being around Jake but that almost made you more upset, seeing how simple it seemed for him to just walk away with no explanation.
âBy my time with Jake do you mean the time Iâm spending waiting for you to show up knowing you wouldnât?â Your voice cracked a little as you took a step closer to him. âAnd when you finally do youâre just going to leave? I mean did the night on the beach just mean nothing to you?â
âThe night on the beach?â He was now starting to show a little emotion outside of the almost cowardly demeanor heâd had, his eyebrows furrowing as he stared down at you now that you were closer. âThe night you pity kissed me?â
It was almost hard to believe heâd say something like that and even harder to comprehend that he genuinely meant it, he wasnât attempting to hurt you or being unnecessarily cruel like most people would but instead he actually was going off the notion youâd kissed him out of sympathy.
âHow could you think that way?â You tried to soften your tone but you were just so upset about everything and even more so now that the fairs opening day was passing you by and going so poorly.
Jay was just looking at you and you were almost worried he was going to start crying, the pained look not going away even when you were closing the gaps between the two of you and bringing your hand up to his cheek. He leaned into it when your thumb rubbed against his skin again but he didnât answer your question.
You could feel his hand on your lower back like he was afraid youâd back away prematurely but you had no plans to go anywhere despite being upset with him, you could see how hurt and confused he was and that trumped your own feelings that could be dealt with afterwards.
He had been a constant in your life for as long as you could understand the notion of having a friend but you felt like you were just now seeing him for the first time ever and you were almost embarrassed that you didnât know how to help him especially since he always seemed to know what to say to you when you were upset.
âYou have no idea what you are to me.â Heâd lost the helplessness in his voice now that you were touching him and the pained tone was more stemming from your closeness than anything else.
There was nothing you could say to that that would properly convey how you felt about the hushed reassured confession so instead you kissed him.
He was immediate in the way he put his other hand on your back too and pulled you closer to him, turning your head and relishing in how different it felt to kiss him standing up.
Jay made a low noise when your hands moved from his face to his hair and you wanted nothing more than to pull another from him, your tongue swiping across his bottom lip seemingly doing the trick as you felt his hands squeeze your waist instinctively.
You pulled away from the kiss to try and breathe but he was immediately following after your lips and connecting them again which made you decide you didnât at all mind continuing even if it meant replacing air with the feeling of him against you.
You didnât even realize you were moving until your feet with tripping over his and your back was hitting what you assumed was the barn, a small laugh leaving your lips even though it was muffled by his moving against you feverishly. Jay was kissing you like heâd never get to do it again but by now youâd caught on to the fact heâd thought about this alot longer than you had.
His hand was leaving your back to stop at your knee, pulling it to the side easily so he could slot his own in between yours and press impossibly closer.
âGod youâre everything.â He was breathing heavily as he spoke and you whined a bit at how low his voice had gotten, sounding similar to how it did when heâd get focused on one of their songs or scold the boys for messing around too much.
âCan you stay with me here?â Your own came out surprisingly squeakish and you flushed in embarrassment.
He was nodding softly and your hand left his hair to sit on the back of his neck for a second before you were kissing him one more time quickly, smiling a little when he took a step back after and grabbed your free hand so youâd stumble forward with him.
âIâm sorry I was late.â He said it so casually like you were just two regular people going out and he was a little tardy for a date but you figured you could talk about how the situation hurt you later and try to enjoy the rest of the day.
You were leading him back towards your friends but dropping his hand as you approached, not fully sure you wanted to deal with their teasing and quick comments. Jay was easily understanding what you were implying and he fell back into his silent nature, giving them quick head nods when they expressed excitement over him joining you.
It was beginning to look just like your regular hangouts until you all agreed to head towards the ferris wheel and suddenly Jake was turning towards you with a shy smile and his arm bent in your direction.
You couldnât fault him for assuming youâd want to continue linking arms now that you were back but your heart clenched for a second knowing who was standing right behind you.
Jay was such a quiet and stoic person that you didnât necessarily think heâd sit there throwing glares at any guy who tried to speak to you but you were either extremely wrong or the energy of the day had gotten to him because you could feel his arm snaking around your waist just as you turned to see the annoyed expression he had and the harsh way he was watching Jake.
All discreetness was thrown out the window at that and you watched the boy across from you purse his lips in bitter understanding before slowly pulling his arm back against his side.
âDonât be rude.â You were whispering the scolding words in Jayâs ear but leaning against his side so he knew you were okay with the show of affection even if it had started as possessiveness.
He didnât say anything in his typical fashion and you tried to ignore how giddy the thought of him being jealous made you. You stayed close to him as you waited in line, listening to your friends joke around as you felt his hand squeezing your side impatiently every few minutes.
It was a no brainer that youâd be sitting next to him when an empty carts started to make their way around the wheel and you smiled softly at Heeseung and Jungwon fighting over who got to sit with Jake, pushing them slightly when the working attendant started to look extra impatient.
Jay glanced at you from the side of his eye before putting a hand forward to signal you to get on first, following behind as you scooted across the metal bench and watched him close the door tightly.
âAre you scared of heights?â Your voice was teasing as you leaned against his side to looked closely at the nervous look on his face. He glared at you lightheartedly and when his eyes didnât leave your face for a few seconds you realized he was going to kiss you right as he did.
His big hand was cupping your cheek to pull you in closer and the feeling of him moving against you was enough to override the embarrassment of kissing before the ride had even moved you out of view from the crowd.
You practically kissed the entire time your cart slightly jerked forward to allow new people onto the ones under you, slowly lifting you higher and higher as your heart raced.
Kissing Jay was a completely foreign feeling but you felt like you couldnât stop now that you knew what it was like, finding the low noises your friend made absolutely addicting to the point they were overriding your system and everything youâve ever thought about him. You never once considered what he would feel like this close to you or how heâd look when you pulled apart to breathe, dark eyes low and hazy and his lip reddening.
âIs this what you expected when you offered to help me paint stables?â You were grinning as you spoke and he brushed some of your hair behind your ear.
âNot necessarily but a guy can dream.â He surprised you by joking back and the ride jolted alive suddenly, both of you lurching forward for a second before dissolving in a fit of laughter.
From the top of the ferris wheel you could not only see the fair and all of the work youâd put into it but you could see a large part of your small town, the gravel roads you struggled with your bike on everyday to Heeseungâs and the railroad tracks that led to the side of town youâd found Jay on the night he called you.
Off in the distance you could even make out the long stretch of road where the trees broke away and the sea inevitably began.
Jay was softly calling for your attention once your cart stopped at the very top of the ride, your hair blowing in the light wind as you turned to face him. The sun had nearly set now and he looked particularly handsome when he was lit up by the lights adorning the metal beams under you, that nervous look returning as he shifted his body to face you.
He almost looked as if he was planning to tell you something, maybe even make a speech of some sort but instead he was closing his mouth and reaching into his coat pocket to pass you a small box.
You took it from his glove covered hands and glanced up at him with wide eyes, already having a relatively good idea about what was inside the box. He raised an eyebrow at you as a way to urge you opening it and you quickly untied the soft ribbon keeping it closed, both of you keeping quiet like you were scared to ruin the moment.
Inside, surrounded by shredded wrapping paper to keep it safe, was a beautiful handmade necklace with a golden seashell at the end of the thin chain. You knew right away who had made the piece of jewelry and your eyes filled up with tears as you looked at him.
âSorry Iâm not as crafty as you but I figured I knew somebody who was.â He was trying to joke around to soften the heavy atmosphere but you could see the hesitation on his face as he waited for you to say something. âItâs the right one right? You kept looking at it the first day you brought me here.â
âItâs perfect.â Your voice was breathy and it came out as one word but you knew he understood, his shoulders losing some tension as he shifted closer to you and took the necklace from your shaky hands.
You sniffed a little bit and turned around so you could lift your hair and assist him in putting the necklace on you, getting a full view of the town around you as you did so and barely even noticing the fact the ferris wheel was beginning to move again.
All you could focus on was his cold hands on your neck and the weight of the seashell as it softly fell down in the middle of your collarbones, your heart thumping so hard you worried it woukd shift it from its place.
His apprehension was still obvious when you turned back around to show him how it looked on you but his eyes lit up at the sight of it, meeting your gaze just in time for you to lean in and kiss him again.

It's always Grumpy! Regulus who is soft just for reader, but what about about Sunshine!reader who is grumpy just for him đ„ș
I broke one of my cardinal rules for this fic; I made the reader *pauses for dramatic affect*.... a Lupin âđ this was such a cute idea though hahaha I love sunshine reader trying so hard to be a grump [also struggling a litttttllllleeeee bit with some writers block so please let me know if anything feels awkward - idk how to feel about my writing right now!]
Regulus Black x Lupin!reader who is the sunshine to his clouds [922 words]
p1 // p2
CW: talking about wringing someone's neck out, siblings
Remus was interrupted from his reading by his boyfriend psst-ing across a few tables in an attempt to garner your attention.
âHey! Trouble!â He whisper-shouted, causing you to look up with an arched eyebrow, though you still had your ever present smile adorning your face.
âBlink twice if you need help, okay?â Sirius continued, earning him a good natured roll of your eyes.
âIâm fine, Pads; thereâs no need to worry.â You responded at regular volume, causing Sirius to look around suspiciously as if he didnât trust the very few patrons of this section of the library - none of which were paying the three of you any mind - with this information.Â
âListen, I love my brother as much as the next person, but- I mean, really? A Black? Surely you can do better.â Sirius informed you solemnly.
âSiriusâŠare you saying that my brother can do better, too?â
Sirius nodded quickly, apparently happy that you were finally getting it. âYes! Thatâs why I sunk my claws into him early, he canât escape me now; we basically live together and share all of our friends.â
Remus lowered his book to give his boyfriend a sideways glance, whilst you just continued beaming at him.Â
Though he didnât necessarily approve of the way Sirius was going about his questioning, Remus couldnât help but sort of agree with Sirius. Not that you could do better, per se, but that the pairing of you - the youngest Lupin - and Regulus - the youngest Black - made absolutely no sense.Â
Remus was happy for you, both of you, really! He wasnât the kind of older brother that was rearing to fight any and all of your potential suitors; he wanted you to be happy, and if it was Regulus Black who made you happy, then he was more than happy for it.
But that didnât mean he understood it.
Were he and Sirius quite different from one another? Sure.Â
Where Sirius was all hard edges and brashness, Remus was careful and exuded gentleness. Where Sirius was black clothes and flashy smiles, Remus was oversized jumpers and quiet remarks. Where Sirius was collected and suave, Remus was awkward and understated.
But for all that was completely opposite between the two of them, they had nearly just as much in common.Â
They both loved the same kind of music, they both loved pranking, they both loved a good house party, and they both loved their younger siblings.Â
But one would be hard pressed to find any similarity between the two of you.Â
Regulus was all quiet stoicism with a moody persona, while you were eager and effervescent. Regulus was snide and, well, kind of rude, while you were generous and compassionate. Regulus was gloomy, while you were all sun.
Remus wasnât sure you even had a negative bone in your body; youâd been disturbingly sweet growing up (as a big brother, he was always looking for reasons to despise you only to come up empty) and he couldnât imagine how someone as bitter as Regulus could find his way in your orbit, nor you into his.
Yet with this, Regulus came hustling into the library muttering something under his breath as he let his bag fall to the table with a loud thunk.
Sirius and Remus shared a concerned and slightly uneasy look, while you seemed to sit up impossibly straighter; Remus was certain that if you were a dog that your tail would be wagging.Â
âHe is such a git.â Regulus hissed as his arse finally hit the seat, and your mouth opened comically as you leaned over the table as if vying for a secret.
âWho!?â You asked earnestly, your warm eyes searching Regulusâ cool ones for any clues.Â
âSodding McLaggen! Thinks heâs Merlinâs gift to the entire wizarding world or something.â
âBastard.â You muttered in camaraderie, and both Remus and Sirius reared their heads back at the use of such language coming from their kind and sweet little sister (and sister-in-law, as Sirius already calls you).
âI couldâve wrung his neck out, I swear.â Regulus continued as he pulled his books out of his bag and you quickly made room on your table for him to spread his homework out too.Â
âWhat was stopping you?â You asked him, and Remus and Sirius both looked at each other with furrowed brows as if saying âare you hearing this!?âÂ
âI didnât think youâd be particularly happy should I miss our study date in order to attend detention with the likes of Potter.â He muttered, ensuring the sneer Jamesâ surname as if it were a dirty word.
Your eyes flit over to Remus and Sirius and they could see the laughter in them as you tried to keep your lips in their dutiful downturned-ness.Â
âWell, it would have been a noble reason I suppose.âÂ
Regulus made a sound somewhere between a hum of acknowledgement and a groan as he ran a hand through his hair.
âDonât worry, Reg; Iâm sure McLaggen will be a wanker again tomorrow. You can wring his neck out then.â You assured him whilst looking down at your book, but as you lifted your hand to turn a page, Regulusâ hand quickly enveloped yours and brought it to his lips.Â
âJe tâaime, mon Ă©toile.â He murmured into your knuckles, and your grumpy persona was gone so quickly that Remus wondered if it was ever there to begin with, and you were left instead with a (far more natural) beaming smile.Â
Sirius made a theatrical gagging sound, but Remus couldnât help but smile; perhaps the two of you made more sense than he thought.

Imagine Sen begging ex-husband Gojo, "Please don't tell mom!"
"Why is there a huge wolf in your dorm?" Satoru asks, bewildered.
Satoru was on business at the Kyoto school when he stopped by the dorms to visit his son. He got more than he bargained for.
To their credit, Naoki Zenin and Hikari Higuruma don't cower at the prospect of the famed Gojo Satoru catching them red-handed.
"She approached us while we were camping," Hikari explains. "We were cooking some meat and she came up with her ears pinned back and whined for some."
Satoru eyes the 150-something pound wolf. "That doesn't explain why it's indoors. And wolves went extinct in Japan more than a hundred years ago. And why is it that big?"
Sen and Nao hugged the creature around the neck. Sen says, "We think she's pregnant!"
"Still doesn't answer any of my questions."
Their line of conversation gets cut short by Satoru's phone ringing. He checks the caller ID.
"It's your mom," he tells Sen.
"Don't tell her! Please, dad, she's going to beat my ass!" Sen begs.
Satoru chuckles. "Oh, I know." He answers the call. "Hey, what's up?"
The four of them wince when your voice booms through the speaker.
"WHAT'S THIS I HEAR ABOUT SEN BRINGING A LIVE WOLF INTO THE DORMS?" you shout.
"How'd she know?" Nao mutters.
"I know it sounds bad, but--"
You cut your ex off. "Put Sen on the phone!"
Knowing that there was no escaping unless they wanted you to come down here yourself, Satoru gingerly hands his son the phone. While you have a full-volume rant about rabies and mauling and animal-borne diseases, Satoru holds up a finger and mouths, "Wait here."
He teleports away while Nao and Hikari pat Sen on the shoulder in solidarity. Hikari is about to tell Sen that he can take you off of speaker until she looks down and realizes you're not on speaker at all. You've just got the lungs of a drill sergeant.
"--rely on limitless to prevent yourself from getting bitten? Wild animals are not pets! What if there's-- Satoru, what are you doing here? I..." The trio listens with anticipation when you trail off and they hear Satoru saying something unintelligible to you.
The audio goes muffled, as if you'd put a hand over the speaker. You and Satoru exchange heated (on your side) words until you stop and huff. Then one thing from Satoru reaches the trio's ears.
"Just let me handle it. Please?"
They can feel your glare through the phone.
"You think you can just come here and bat your lashes and give me that wet puppy look and I'll cave?" you say incredulously.
"Yes. And, well. You know."
You huff and the line goes dead. A moment later, Satoru reappears.
"I've never heard anyone talk her down like that," Sen says in wonder.
Satoru shrugs. "It's a learned skill. I just showed her this picture." He hands them a polaroid.
The color is faded, but the paper is still in mint condition. Someone seemed to have taken great care of it. It reads "September 2005" and it depicts somewhere that must be the Tokyo High dorms. Satoru's visage is unmistakable, what with Sen looking exactly the same. The only difference is more babyish features, his hair, and the round sunglasses.
You looked much the same back then, too. Maybe a bit less tired-looking and with a bit more mischief in your eyes than Sen had ever remembered seeing growing up, but it was still you.
And sitting on the bed, surrounded by empty filet-o-fish wrappers strewn all over your bedroom floor, being hugged from either side by your teen selves, is a fully-grown grizzly bear.
~

Hi, everyone! I'm back! Sorry, I was worried I was posting too much before and then I lost a little inspo. I've been having doubts about my Sen work, so I took a little break. Thank you for your support and kind words! It meant a lot! (And to the anon's who asked about reader's burn many moons ago, I haven't forgotten you, I'm just trying to do her injury justice in the fic for it.)

Ooh shit I had the worlds worst thoughtâ Megumi snapping at Fushigojo mom OF ALL PEOPLE in the heat of some kind or argument or bad day or something and blurting out âyouâre not my momâ and then just AAAH IT WOULD BE SO SAD ALL FOUR OF THEM WOULD BE HEARTBROKEN AND MEGUMI WOULD BE SO UPSET WITH HIMSELF đđđđłïžđ¶ââïž
things have been difficult since tsumiki had fallen into a coma.
it's hard not to feel her absence at home. the empty seat at the dining table, the untouched laundry left folded in the hamper. somehow she's everywhere and nowhere, and it hurts.
you and satoru are heartbroken of course, but you can't begin to imagine how megumi feels.
at first he'd been quiet. megumi had always been quiet, but this was different. the two of you used to sit in comfortable silence, content to read quietly in each other's presence. now he shuffles to and from his bedroom barely uttering a word, silence hanging heavy as you try to coax him into staying.
then his grades had started slipping. you weren't awfully concerned. his teachers had been sympathetic enough to exempt him from final exams, and excuse any late or incomplete papers. despite his record of delinquency, he's always gotten high marks.
you could excuse these things. the silence, the grades. he's a little brother missing his big sister, and he's hurting.
but now he was starting to act out.
picking fights at school, talking back to faculty, giving attitude.
you startle where you stand in the kitchen when the front door suddenly slams shut, revealing a grumpy looking megumi. he kicks his shoes off, making a beeline for his room without stopping to greet you.
satoru holds a hand up before you can ask, walking over to the genkan to fix the sneakers.
"what now?" you ask, wiping your hands on your apron when your husband returns, kissing your forehead.
"suspended indefinitely for fighting," he sighs, running a hand through his hair. "he has to write an apology letter to everyone involved, and the headmaster said that next is expulsion."
"he can't keep doing this," you frown. "one of us needs to talk to him."
satoru is quick to touch the tip of his nose. "not it."
you roll your eyes (like megumi would, is that where he got it?) "yeah, it's probably best that you don't. he'd bite your head off."
he leans back against the counter, relieved. "yeah, i'd justâ wait. you're doing that reverse psychology stuff on me again!"
feigning cluelessness is easy. "what are you talking about?"
"when you tell me i shouldn't do something and it makes me want to prove myself!"
"not my fault you're an incredibly prideful man."
"and just this once, i'll actually admit that talking to moody teens is not one of my many skills," he says. "this is your territory. you're the only one he might listen to. you've always been his favourite."
deep down, you know that he's right. you're the first one megumi goes to for everything. the first one he comes to with a new bump or scrape. the one whose side of the bed he squeezes into when he has a nightmare. the first one he talks to when he has a fight with a friend, or his sister...
you learned pretty quickly that megumi hated when people fussed over him (it came with his lone wolf tendencies) but he always let you.
so you steel yourself with a deep breath before knocking on his bedroom door.
"megumi?" you call gently. "can i come in?"
you decide to take his muffled response as permission, twisting the knob and slowly pushing the door open.
megumi's sat on the floor with his back pressed against the bed and his knees drawn up to his chest.
you close the door behind you. "thank you for letting me in."
he hums, peeking at you over his knees.
you sit on the floor across from him, rubbing your palms against your thighs. "i know that whatever we're feeling can't compare to how bad you're hurting, but we're worried about you."
"i'm fine."
"you're not, and you can't keep acting out at school."
"okay, i'll stop," he shrugs.
you should stop here. but you know megumi. he's only saying it because he knows that's what you want to hear.
you reach out, gently grasping his hand. "megumi, please. you can't keep this all in anymore. you always talk to meâ"
"i don't want to talk about it," he snaps, jerking away from your touch. "can you just leave me alone?"
you flinch a little, surprised by the slight raise in his voice. he's never yelled at you. never snapped at you like that.
you're pushing too much, you realize. he's not ready to talk yet, you have to apologize.
"megumi, i'mâ"
"justâ just stop!" he shouts, expression stormy. "stop fussing over me, you're not my mom!"
to his credit, megumi looks like he regrets the words immediately, lips already shooting off an apology you can't seem to hear.
it does nothing to soothe the way your chest aches, full of hurt and a touch of betrayal. those words shouldn't hurt you as much as they do. he's right, you're not his mother.
but you don't even get to utter a word before the door swings open, a pissed off looking satoru striding into the room. shit. so he had been listening. "listen here you little shitâ"
you stagger to your feet, stepping between your boys. "satoru, don't. don't! he's just upset."
"he can't talk to you like that!"
"let it go," you plead. "fighting is the last thing the three of us should be doing right now, okay?"
the three of you stand there for what seems like a lifetime, letting all the pain, frustration, and heartache fill the quiet apartment.
satoru shoots one last stern look around you before drawing a deep breath and focusing on you. you do the same as his hands come up to cup your cheeks, thumb swiping a stray tear away.
"we're just gonna give you some space, megs."
_____
"he didn't mean it," you remind satoru again that night, when sleep seems to be avoiding the both of you.
"i know. he still hurt your feelings though."
"well, he was right. i'm not his mom."
your husband tuts softly, reaching across the mattress and pulling you into his chest. "so what if you didn't give birth to them? you're something better because you chose them. you chose to love them and raise them when you didn't have to."
"of course i had to. they wouldn't have lasted a week in your care."
"oh? now who's being a little shit? i see where megumi gets his attitude from."
foreheads pressed together, the two of you laugh quietly. you feel light for the first time in weeks. the man holding you close, the boy sulking in his room, and the girl laying in the hospital.
they're your family, and you know they'll always love you as much as you love them.
waking up in the middle of the night to megumi squishing between you both (and satoru actually letting him) is as good a sign as any.

Older! Neighbor Nanami who just moved in to the house next to yours.
Older! Neighbor Nanami to whom you smiled when you saw him standing in front of his door with a cardboard box.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who blushes a little receiving that innocent little smile from you.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who sees you from his balcony everyday. âSuch a nice girlâ he thought.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who doesn't really talk much with the other people in the neighborhood. He keeps to himself. But you strike up a conversation every now and then, which he doesn't seem to mind.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who helps you carry your groceries inside by not letting you hold a single bag. He carries them all himself.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who thinks of you when he sees strawberry shortcakes displayed on his favorite bakery on his way home from work.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who finds you extremely cute because of your height. You were so small.
Older! Neighbor Nanami always listened to you so intently. The way he kept eye contact while listening made your heart skip a beat.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who secretly grows tulips for you in his because you once mentioned it was your favorite flower.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who comes to discover that he is much older than you.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who couldn't help but fall for you rather quickly. You're so cute and just so nice to him. Always caring for him, giving him that sweet innocent smile.
Older! Neighbor loves when you invite him for dinner when he has a bad day at work. You just seem to notice every time. And that makes him so lovesick.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who starts to distance himself from you after realizing his feelings. It wasn't right. You were much younger than. If you found out you'd probably feel disgusted with him.
But his feelings weren't of lust.
Older! Neighbor Nanami held pure love for you. Your presence brought comfort and light to him. You were such a nice girl. Always looking out for him even though he's the one older.
Older! Neighbor Nanami was scared. He was scared of scaring you away. So he locked himself away from you.
But he didn't realize this would end up affecting you, in a negative way of course.
When you saw how he started to avoid you all of a sudden, you thought maybe you had done something wrong. Did you annoy him? Maybe he was tired of your constant chit chat. Maybe he wanted some space. Or maybe..he didn't like you anymore.
That last thought made your heart heavy.
Unbeknownst to your older! Neighbor Nanami, you'd fallen for him the moment you locked eyes with him. He was so kind, so mature. Better than any man you've ever met. Always listening to you. Being a comfort to you. Day by day, you wanted more of him.
But Older! Neighbor Nanami didn't know about anything of this. He only distanced himself more for your 'own good'.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who was dying inside to see you. You were a part of his everyday life. The only good thing in his monotonous life.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who stopped seeing you at the balcony. It was killing him not seeing you. To not knock on your door and confess.
It was as if he's wish came true. In a different way.
Older! Neighbor Nanami was surprised when his doorbell rang one evening and saw it was you.
Older! Neighbor Nanami got a bad feeling when you told him you 'wanted to ask something.'
âSure, please go ahead.â
Older! Neighbor Nanami who's heart broke a little when you asked him, âDid I do something to make you not like me?â
Not like you? He was in love with you.
Older! Neighbor Nanami who couldn't look at your innocent doe eyes. He didn't know how to answer that.
Feeling defeated you stood up. âSorry, I...â You looked away. âI shouldn't have come here.â
Just as you were about to walk away, a hand on your wrist stopped you.
âW-Wait a minute.. please.â
This was his only chance.
His heart was beating so fast. He never meant to make you feel like this. He thought maybe if he distanced himself you would eventually move on with your life. A feeling of guilt resided in him for making you feel this way.
âThe reason I've been kind of distant is because -â
Older! Neighbor Nanami let's out a deep breath and
puts his hand behind your head and pulls you in for a kiss. His other hand on your back. It's like he got you caged.
You were probably going to hate him after this. Run away from him. And before that happens he wanted to kiss you. To feel your soft lips against his.
And to his surprise, you kissed him back. Did not resist. He didn't know if it was a heat of the moment thing but it didn't matter. He needed you.
He wanted you
He pulls you further in to deepen the kiss. He's got you completely caged. His hand making your hair a mess. Your hands on his chest. You slightly pulled his collar for more.
You always liked his formal office wear. Suits and ties were made for him. And when he rolled his sleeves in front of you at the dinner table over your place, you had to excuse yourself to the every time for that because your face would heat up. Not to mention the uncontrollable pounding on your chest.
A kiss so passionate that it left you two breathless. Flushed faces. Hands still on his chest and his on your back.
âI have fallen for you.â
Older! Neighbor Nanami couldn't look at you in the eyes. He was sure you hated him. Felt disgusted by him. But your head on his shoulders said otherwise.
His heart was pounding so fast that he was sure you felt it too.
âI've...fallen for you too.â And you held on to him tightly.
Older! Neighbor Nanami was so ecstatic that he wanted to kiss you again. But instead he held you close to his chest, burying his face in your hair.
He is never letting you slip away again.
He's not old just, older ;)
