If falling asleep happened slowly first and then all at once, then waking up was decidedly the opposite. 

There was a loud sound that had you tensing and holding your breath; asleep and then suddenly not.

There was an arm under your head, and one circling your torso; both tightening their hold on you, tense on your behalf. 

“Would you sods fuck off. She hasn’t had a decent stretch of sleep in the past three weeks and if either of you wake her up, I swear to Salazar, only Merlin will be able to help you.” 

The room fell quiet again, and the hands loosened their hold on you, though they never left; fingers smoothing circles over your skin where they settled on your skin.

Awake, but not completely. Slowly becoming conscious of the things you could hear (the waves of the Black Lake lapping against the windows of the Slytherin common room, the rapidly retreating footsteps of whatever Slytherin student Barty just threatened, Barty’s breathing), and the things you could feel (every part of your body that was touching Barty, the blanket he had pulled over your form, his breaths dusting across your forehead).

You were aware of what everyone said about Barty; that he was wild, unhinged, a danger to the public. But they didn’t see this Barty; the Barty who would shield you with his body from rambunctious students who threatened your peace and comfort, the Barty whose touch was so soft, so gentle, so pure like he was worried it might be the greatest offence to touch you with anything short of reverence. 

Fuck you loved him.

“Are you smiling in your sleep?” He murmured then, speaking softly as though he wasn’t entirely sure you were actually awake.

Asleep and then suddenly not, finally waking up slowly.

You blinked your eyes open; soft, sleepy smile growing into a beaming sort of thing when the vision of Barty took over your view. 

“Merlin, you wake up chipper.” Barty teased, though his expression remained dutifully lovesick. 

“What time is it?” You asked through a stretch; Barty loosening his hold on you only enough to allow you range of motion to stretch out your limbs before you all but curled back up into him. 

Barty hummed in a slightly bored tone. “Who knows; maybe six? I wasn’t too fussed.”

“Not too fussed about missing dinner?” You asked.

“‘Course not.” Barty scoffed as if you said something ridiculous. “You fell asleep in my arms. It was adorable. Dinner can wait.”

Your response was simply a beaming smile.

“What?” He asked with a smile. 

“You think I’m adorable.” 

Barty threw his head back with a laugh, nodding. “That is very true.”

“You love me.” You added as he looked back down at you.

“Right again, Treasure.” A glint in his eyes. “Feel like going three for three?”

You narrowed your eyes at him as you pretended to think. “You’re going to kiss me.”

His smile fell soft as his eyes fell to your lips. “A perfect score, Tres.” And he pressed his lips to yours.

James Potter x fem!reader who doesn't need to earn his affection [591 words]

CW: implied experience of conditional love, hurt/comfort, fluff

James is pretty sure that if he looked in a mirror, he’d see hearts pouring out of his eyes. In fact, he was so certain of it that he was surprised none of his mates had said as much.

It came out of nowhere, really; this bout of fondness that has wormed its way into his throat just waiting for the perfect moment to spill from his lips. His only saving grace was that the two of you were surrounded by all of his closest friends and family. 

He knew you’d been terribly nervous for tonight. You had met some of his friends, and even met his mum one day when they’d run into you at a cafe not far from James’ parents place - his mum had been smitten, but so was James, so that was mostly to be expected - but this was the first time you were going to be surrounded by all of James’ friends and family at the holiday party his parents threw every year. 

The only evidence of that anxiety now was the way that your eyes darted over to him every so often as if convincing yourself he was still there, still with you, still real. And James thoroughly enjoyed watching you laugh and chat with his friends and charm the pants off of his relatives like you were being paid to do it. 

Blast the fact that his family and friends were here; he had to say it. 

“Having fun, Jamie?” You asked then, a cautious, hopeful sort of smile gracing your lips and James was stuck between wanting to kiss them senseless or keep admiring how pretty they looked.

“I’m so proud of you.” He blurted then, and the smile on your lips never faltered but your eyebrows did furrow.

“But…I haven’t done anything?” You laughed; an argument in the form of a question. 

“Well…I feel like that might be up to interpretation. But it wouldn’t matter anyhow.” James offered easily. 

“It wouldn’t?”

“Of course not.” James insisted, linking his hands together at the small of your back and pulling you into him. “You exist, I’m proud of you. You’re here with me, I’m proud to have you.”

“I don’t know that I’ve done anything to deserve your pride.” You continued, you were still laughing, but there was still a cautious question in your voice. James opted to try and kiss it away.

“I’m not sure that my being proud to have you and to know you has anything to do with being deserving.” He argued once the two of you broke apart; your lips still slightly parted like you couldn’t fathom what James was saying. “Have you always felt like you needed to earn love?”

The bemused smile you’d been wearing died on your lips as you looked up at James in a quiet sort of horror; realisation dawning on you. 

“Not anymore, angel. Okay?” He murmured as he pulled you closer to him. “You don’t need to earn my affection; not now and not ever.” 

“I love you.” You blurted then; holding onto the lapels of James’ suit jacket like a vice, like if you loosened your hold at all, he might simply float away.

James hoped there may come a day you don’t feel like you have to worry about that.

Until then, though, he’d just keep loving you; regardless of whether you felt you deserved it or not.

“I love you too, sweetheart.” He returned, tucking your head under his chin and feeling the pride simply grow within his chest.

JAMES POTTER - Afterglow

James is ten minutes late. You want to kill him. 

"Oi," his voice calls from behind you, irritatingly nonchalant. You turn and see he's also wearing his Quidditch sweater—which means you're now unintentionally matching—and a pair of casual trousers. James sends you a lopsided smirk, pushing his hands into his pockets as he sways on his feet almost awkwardly. "Why so gloomy, newb?" he mocks, the nickname rolling cruelly from his tongue.

You scrunch up your nose and spin around, walking in front of him as you clutch your purse. You don't want to give him a reaction and have him mock you the entire way into town. Instead, you both walk in silence, taking in the morning air and the sound of the birds. Occasionally your purse will hit James's hip and he'll frown, opening to say another snarky comment until he sees a keychain; the one you have of Olive Gnats, a famous chaser from the Montrose Magpies.

"Oh, Gnats, I like her too—" he finds himself admitting before he can remind himself he hates you. 

You startle and clutch your keychain, wanting to hide it from him but then you look down and then back up. "Yeah, she's my favorite player. Her technique is incomparable."

"Seen her match last year?"

"'Course," you say, your tone less on edge now that you're talking about something you clearly love, and the rambling you do so much kicks in, "I would watch her every game ever since I was six years old. Have around ten posters in my room at home, some are old now but—I- I studied her moves when I would play around with my mum and dad—they also played in school—that's how they met and—"

You cut yourself off, James's earlier taunts ringing in your head.

TANGERINE - The Archer pt.2 of Delicate

Y/n. Tangerine mouths your name as he stares into the bathroom mirror, his toothbrush hanging from his lips. Y/n. The name suits you and warmth spreads inside his stomach as he spits into the sink and his mind is filled with memories of how sweetly you'd looked at him.

Fuck. 

"Oi," Lemon's hurried voice snaps him out of whatever was happening and Tangerine turns to him, leaning his hip against the counter. "Some weird fucker is on the phone," Lemon shows his brother his phone, an unknown number displayed clearly on the screen. "Says we have something of his."

Tangerine bristles and his jaw clenches involuntarily. He holds out his hand for Lemon to hand him the phone and when he does it puts it on speaker and holds it close to his ear, letting Lemon lean in and hear the conversation. 

"'Ello?"

"You have something of mine," a hoarse voice cuts the silence. The man behind the phone sounds older, like his voice has had the time to become damaged from years of smoking, and he has a Irish accent.

"And what might that be?" Tangerine retorts, sending Lemon an unsure look but he keeps his tone steady.

"You have my wife."
