Wishful Thinking đ epilogue
PAIRING â© jungkook x reader
WC â© 6.3k
SUMMARY â© Almost a year after you and Jungkook fleed from the farm, youâre both struggling with the life youâd settled for and the unexpected turmoil to your relationship.
AUTHORS NOTE â© Itâs here! If you know my works then you know I rarely do part twos but I am so thankful you guys loved these characters as much as I did so I wanted to give you an ending that wasnt as vauge as I normally do lol. I love to write these two and their love together and I hope this is worth the wait. I know some of you will be disappointed by the direction I took the smut here but I think it fits them and their journey. Hope you enjoy!
Jungkook had a tough time adjusting to your life back in the city, eyes shifty and nervous in a way youâd never seen them and forcing himself into clothes that looked unnatural for him. Somehow though, you seemed to be handling it worse.Â
You found yourself spending hours at a time on your balcony or in the nearest city park until the sun was setting, filling your lungs with the cleanest air you could and still feeling like you were being polluted with every breath.Â
Jungkook was actually acting as your anchor despite the fact this world was much more foreign to him and you couldnât have been more grateful while simultaneously feeling guilt eat away at you every time you went to bed crying softly or lashed out.Â
Getting out of your apartment helped, despite your love for the space itself. It cleared your mind to have one less connection to your father and to have your name be the only one on your new lease a bit further out from the city.Â
It still wasnât the farm and the stars were still dimmed by the light pollution filling the air but it wasnât quite as suffocating and you even got to have a small yard that you eventually planted strawberries in.Â
Jungkook got a factory job the next town over and you think he felt a bit lighter once he was able to work with his hands again but the exhaustion on his face was more evident everyday and you started to feel really torn.Â
âIs this working?â You asked softly one night as you both laid in bed together, flat on your backs and staring at the ceiling that was painted an obnoxious landlord white. âAre we happy?âÂ
He took a few minutes to respond but you liked that about him, the careful intention behind every word he spoke making it a lot easier for your scattered brain to communicate. You knew he meant whatever he said when he eventually got around to it.
âIâm happy with you.â His answer was soft but reserved and you sighed a little bit, knowing what he wasnât saying was more important than what he did.Â
He answered your question while also not answering it, knowing youâd read between the lines and understand that he wasnât content with your situation but was overlooking it to be with you.Â
âYou know I am too.â You said in a single breath so he knew there was going to be a contradictory statement following. âBut I am not happy here, not like this.âÂ
You both couldnât find a solution that was worth offering so you laid there together basking in your settled state, pinkies brushing on the bed until you were able to dream of large quarries and an endless chore list that kept your bodies and minds busy.Â
The two part time jobs youâd taken up made you feel like a robot but you swallowed your disappointment with life and went through the motions, determined to be as dedicated to making this work as Jungkook was.Â
He deserved your full effort because he never gave you a sliver less, coming home late and leaving early but still taking care of you in between.Â
It was a slap in the face to be confronted with the realization that youâd never had to work even a quarter as hard as he had growing up. You werenât above it at all and were more than willing but it was almost suffocating to be ingrained with the mindset that you shouldnât have to do so much to barely be surviving.
You felt like a spoiled brat and it was becoming your habit to push complaints about your day down so you didnât feel so silly, letting it build up instead of confiding in your partner. There was no part of you that thought he would think less of you for griping about small things, especially compared to what his work day consisted of but your own internal conflict stopped you.Â
A rainy week had damped your mood even more severely and you came home on your lunch break to find Jungkook sitting out on the porch, under the thin awning just enough that he wasnât getting wet other than the toes of his boots.Â
He hadnât expected you home and he was so lost in thought that he didnât react when you pushed open the creaky screen door, your hand sliding over his shoulder making him jump.Â
You heard him suck in a breath when his head whipped around to see it was only you and you smiled softly at him, circling around the rocking chair until you could sit on his left leg. His hands pulled both of yours over his right one as his arm wrapped around your back to keep you steady.Â
âHey princess.â His voice was low and you could have shuddered at the sound of it in your ear, leaning your head against his shoulder and watching the rain collect in the grass.Â
âWhats on your mind?â You responded just as softly and he sighed at the question, not surprised you managed to read him so quickly. âThinking about your mom?âÂ
He nodded his head and you felt it lean against yours as his other hand went around your stomach so he was hugging you to him. You rubbed the back of it softly, feeling the ridges between his knuckles and calloused skin.Â
âAnd Lucky.â He sounded a bit dazed and you couldnât help the pout that appeared on your face.Â
There were dozens of nights where you dreamed of Jungkook, most of them including him on the back of the large horse with a bright smile as he basked in the sun. Youâd wake up to see his skin that was a couple shades paler now and a grin that required more effort and youâd wait all day until you could sleep again.Â
You picked your head up so you could look at him, hand on his cheek as you rubbed soothingly and waited for him to lock eyes with you. They were heavy when they finally did and words failed you again as they so often did so you were kissing him.Â
He hummed into it and you realized it had been a while since youâd been able to give him this type of affection, both of you always so exhausted and shut off. The spark between you didnât die because of the sheer desire and affection between you but it definitely wasnât being flamed.Â
His grip tightened when your tongue pushed in between his lips and you could feel his body go taut, his mouth moving quicker as he sat up in the chair and leaned into you more.Â
Your hand slid from his face into his hair that was the longest youâd ever seen it and the action pulled a louder noise out of him.Â
The rain and the sounds of you kissing was all you could focus on and you felt like youâd open your eyes and be back on the farm, back when you were only shared glances and giggles as he whisked you away to the barn.Â
He slowed down his pace, desperate movements becoming soft pecks that told you he didnât actually want to stop and your eyes fluttered open to look at him in confusion. He looked pained at the expression like it physically hurt him to not give you what he could tell you wanted and his hand squeezed your waist affectionately.Â
âGotta get back to work.â He said in a hoarse voice, sounding much more grown up than the boy youâd met last year.Â
âMe too.â You breathed and it came out a lot sadder than you had meant it to, portraying an emotion much deeper than the one ending your lunch break gave you.Â
You forgot about the pathetic sandwich you had made this morning and left it to warm on the counter so you could stay in his arms a few minutes longer, listening to the rain and his heartbeat like it would somehow get rid of the rest of the noise from the world youâd been smothered in.Â
Jungkook left shortly before you and you didnât have the heart to tell him that you never went back to work, calling in to the office and letting the roughness of your voice fully come through as you proclaimed you were sick.Â
It wasnât because your laziness had fully taken effect nor because you randomly decided you deserved a break.Â
Instead you spent the rest of the day hunched over the kitchen table as you spread papers and papers across the surface, phone held so tightly to your ear you nearly ripped it off the wall a handful of times.Â
Your last call was to a familiar number, one you called about a dozen times over the hard year when Jungkook was asleep or gone on an overnight shift.Â
He had decided to go no contact with his mother the second he left, unable to stop himself from feeling a sense of betrayal despite her overwhelming love and kindness towards him. She was a bystander to his abuse, encouraging it at times when it was something as âsmallâ as a light spanking or extra chores.Â
It took a lot for him to admit that he didnât deserve the violence his father inflicted on him and even longer to accept that he wasnât solely responsible and his mother was guilty too in her own way.
You felt like you were betraying him by keeping up with Nari, giving her small updates about the two of you while you talked in a hushed voice on the phone. The calls only lasted a few minutes, never enough for her to pry although she never once tried.Â
Sheâd simply ask how he was in a shaky voice and youâd tell her as she sighed in relief or dejection if you admitted things had been hard. There was never advice offered in fear of overstepping your boundaries, only hearing you out and then wishing you luck and lots of love before hanging up.Â
This call was a lot longer and ended with both of you having cracking voices and both hurt and a flicker of hope in your chest.Â
It took months for that flicker to grow into something more and it was torturous to keep it from Jungkook, your partner in life and so much more. There was nothing you couldnât tell him and now you felt like your entire day was constructed around him finding out what youâd been up to.Â
He didnât seem to notice the change in you, the sleepless nights and the way you now seemed to always be doing paperwork and cutting your breaks early so you could go make more phone calls at the pay phone up the road.Â
Youâd thought you were totally sliding under the radar until you came home one day a little past dinner to find him sitting on the edge of the bed with a sullen look on his face, his elbows resting on his knees and his hand covering his light scruff.
âAre you cheating on me?âÂ
His flat voice made your feet stick to the floor and your eyes widened as you stared down at him, rushing to set down your bag and take off your coat so you could sit beside him, facing him as he stared forward like he didnât want to look at you.Â
âWhat? No, how could you think that?â You felt stupid as soon as you asked because it made perfect sense why he would think that.Â
Youâd come to the same exact conclusion if he was suddenly coming home late from work and disappearing at random moments to speak in a quiet voice on the phone.Â
The look on his face when he turned it towards you told you he was on the same train of thought and you sighed softly, desperation flooding through you at the thought that your attempts to make things better might have been silently ruining it all.Â
You had a tendency to forget that Jungkook was much more sheltered than you growing up and that you were his first partner, his first of most things.Â
âI would never.â Your hand was holding his jaw lightly so he couldnât look away from your sincere gaze as you spoke in a firm voice. âEver ever ever. That would never happen.âÂ
He looked pained and you werenât sure if it was because he didnât believe you or if he felt guilt for even accusing you, most likely the latter considering he was the kindest man youâd ever met and you knew he couldnât bare the thought of negatively affecting you even if he thought you were being disloyal.Â
âIâve beenâŠâ You paused as you fumbled for words, mouth opening and closing. âIâm sorry for being so distant. I really zoned in on our savings and our leasing agreement.âÂ
It wasnât exactly a lie, all things you were actually doing as a piece of the bigger picture but it still made your stomach twist to even slightly fabricate the truth to him.Â
He nodded his head softly, eyes vulnerable and a bit embarrassed. It made your stomach twist and feel even sicker and you waited a few seconds to make sure the doubt had left his face and he wasnât just agreeing to appease you.Â
Then he was kissing you and the action was so sudden you forgot to respond for a breath before instinct was kicking in.Â
There was a part of you that wanted to stop him and talk about this more, make sure he was actually feeling okay and had believed the answer you had given him. His hands slipping around your lower back was enough to make you push that aside and you moved swiftly so you were sitting in his lap.Â
You kissed desperately, his mouth moving against yours as you made soft noises that he eagerly swallowed.Â
Jungkook and you had your fair share of intimacy but still hadnât had sex, not for lack of trying. You really hadnât stopped moving and fighting for a better life since you both made the decision to start one together and it never felt like the right time.Â
You hated the idea of sleeping together and one of you not being all the way there mentally, lost in thoughts of work or what would happen in a few months if you couldnât figure things out. There were other things you did, learning rather quickly that his actions in the barn was something he enjoyed doing quite a lot but it never went too far.Â
His hands smoothed over your thighs and you squealed a bit when he was suddenly picking you up and moving so he could lay you down on the bed, his body moving to be on top of you.Â
You could feel him trembling a bit from need and your legs parted so he could easily slot between them, his hips shifting as he picked his head up from the kiss and looked down between your legs with a pained expression.
Your mouth moved to his jaw while he was distracted, kissing down his neck and licking at the warm skin as he hissed at the feeling. His hand that wasnât supporting his body weight went to tug at your shirt and you breathed out heavily.Â
You sat up just enough that he could pull it off and he outwardly groaned at the sight of you shirtless despite how many times heâd seen it. Jungkook always made you feel like the most beautiful girl alive, looking at you like it was the first time every moment you were together.Â
âI love you.â You breathed out and he hummed at the sound of it, stealing your move and kissing your neck softly. You gripped his hair on the back of his head and arched your back enough for him to feel you shifting under him.Â
âI love you more. Youâre so beautiful.â His voice was low and rough in the way you really liked, your eyes fluttering shut when his tongue smoothed over your collarbone.Â
His shirt was off next and your hands eagerly smoothed over the expanse of his skin, rubbing up and down his strong back and slipping between your bodies to feel the trail of hair down his stomach. You listened to the way his breath stuttered before he stuffed his face into your neck and nearly whimpered.Â
âGood baby?â You said in a soft voice, nearly a purr as you cranked up the seductive tone. He made another pained noise when you pushed past the waistband of his sweatpants and you almost laughed at the sound of it until your hand wrapped around his length and you realized how hard he was. âAll this just from kissing?âÂ
âDonât make fun of me.â His words came out strained and you smiled at the sound of it, stroking him slow to purposely rile him up some more.Â
You liked him like this, something youâd never explored with the various hookups you had before him. Jungkook could take control easily and more often than not he did, his grip on you firm and his words menacing and filthy when he got you off on his fingers or tongue but then there was this side of him.Â
The side where heâd let you take over and guide him through inexperience, teasing remarks and drawn out orgasms that occasionally ended with him in tears.Â
There was something about having such a large and rugged boy coming undone for you that you absolutely lived for and you were glad he seemed to be leaning towards that dynamic tonight.Â
âBecause you like it too much?â You were actually laughing now, soft giggles that made him groan as he picked his head up and kissed you again just to shut you up.Â
His hand was all over you while you kept touching him gently, more focused on the way your mouths moved and his tongue tangling against yours like he was starved for it.Â
You felt your bra being unclasped and you smiled into the kiss, so genuinely in love and enamored by him and everything he did that it made you feel a little bit sick. Youâd never once thought this amount of feeling was possible and he made it so easy to forget that things were difficult right now.Â
âI want you.â He breathed out and your eyebrows furrowed with tension as his hips shifted again, clearly rubbing against your core intentionally now so you didnât misconstrued his words. âI need you Y/N.â
âYou have me.â You said so earnestly that it made him freeze for a few seconds, peering down at you with a look that you told yourself to ask more about later. He got rid of it as quick as it came and he was nodding before kissing you so softly you almost forgot how tension filled the room was.Â
It wasnât long before the rest of your clothes came off and you couldnât ever get enough of kissing him, almost feeling immature with the knowledge you could probably do nothing but just kiss him for the rest of your life.Â
You hadnât really processed that he was intending more than usual tonight and your breath caught when you felt his big hand wrapping around the underside of your knee so he could lift your leg up a bit and really slot himself between you.
Your eyebrows furrowed at him in confusion and he looked a little pained as he stared down at you, expression on his face nervous like he also hadnât planned for this. You knew Jungkook didnât think about his virginity so intensely anymore, the two of you having lots of talks about toxic masculinity especially surrounding being sexually active.
But you still knew it was a big deal for him and you didnât want to take it lightly, wordlessly holding his face for a moment and silently asking him if this was okay. He stole a page out of your book and answered by kissing you again, managing to distract you both again.
âCan you- fuck.â His words fell over each other when he accidentally pressed right up against your wet core and you felt his back tense under your hands, his face looking a little frustrated now.Â
âYeah baby.â You breathed out, understanding what he needed as your free hand went back between your connected bodies. He leaned his head forward to rest against your shoulder when you grabbed his hard length again and you could hear him breathing heavily.
You helped position him towards your entrance, encouraging him with soft kisses against the side of his head until he was rolling his hips forward and freezing up when he was halfway inside of you and could feel the full expanse of your wet heat.Â
âFuck, youâre big.â You pushed the words out in a strained string of breaths and he groaned, either from the sound of your praising words or the way you felt around him. âYou can move. You wonât hurt me I promise.â
He didnât seem to need much direction after that and like everything else in the world, Jungkook had found another thing he was naturally good at. The fact he was inside of you was making you dizzy after an entire year of loving him and waiting for the right time to finally have him in such a powerful way.
You were overwhelmed by both bodily pleasure and the adoration you felt for Jungkook and all you had been through together, the dedication to making it work despite the odds being against you and the way he made you feel on a daily basis.Â
His low voice swearing against your neck was distracting you from your sentimental train of thoughts and now all you could focus on was how whiny he sounded when he got like this.
It felt ridiculous that somebody who looked like him could come undone for you like this and you didnât feel like you even half deserve this amount of power.Â
You couldnât stop thinking about it even when it was over and the two of you were laying there in peaceful silence together, bodies as bare as your hearts always were and his arms wrapped tightly around you like he was still afraid youâd disappear even after all this time.Â
âYouâre thinking.â He said simply and it came out muffled and laced with exhaustion, his arms tightening and his chin resting on your shoulder so you were really trapped in him. You made a small noise, a hum of acknowledgment to what he had said but not necessarily an answer. âLet me hear?â
There was a long break in the air as you thought hard about what you wanted to say, how to word the thousand different things racing through your mind. He, in his truest nature, stayed quiet and patient as he waited for you to figure it out. He was laying soft kisses on your bare shoulders where you assumed some of your moles were and you suddenly felt like you could cry.Â
âI just love you.â Is what you eventually came up with and it left your mouth sounding strangled and more emotional than you had meant to convey. His breath spanned across your shoulder blades and you were very glad you were not facing him, both because the tears in your eyes and because you couldnât bare the look on his face.Â
âI love you.â He replied easily and it struck you how it never sounded rehearsed. There was never a single time you felt like it was just a habit to say when you left for work or before you went to sleep, every syllable always felt like it was being laid out in front of you for acceptance.
There was no certain thing in your lives from finances to the state of your environment but you knew one thing for sure and that was the fact that you loved each other more than anything else.
âYouâre everything.â This time he whispered the words and you almost felt nauseous at the sound of him knowing exactly what you were thinking just like he always did. How did he have the ability to get into parts of you that you hadnât even explored yet?Â
Was there something in the stars that granted him access or were you reserving those sections specifically for someone so unlike yourself, so gentle and forgiving at the times where you found it impossible to be. Jungkook tightened his arms around you and you thought of small town markets and the smell of fresh water drying on your clothes.Â
You thought of days where his skin was tanner and his eyes were hazy from the weed you snuck out to smoke together, the question in the air when you laid together and talked about your lives that used to be so far removed from each other.Â
Now you werenât sure where he stopped and where you began and you much preferred life like this, with him and all of his heart fully at your disposal but it was hard to not dream of the days where your secret was your biggest problem and where you smiled so much you didnât feel human anymore.Â
Your fantasy life had been so short lived that you would have figured you made it all up if you hadnât taken him from the pages and brought him home with you. You felt so silly for being homesick over a life that wasnât yours while he seemed to be content anywhere if it meant he got to have you.Â
His arms tightening again made you realize you had never answered him and guilt ripped through you as you heard his breathing even out, knowing right away by the rise and fall of his chest against your back that he had fallen asleep while you got lost in your thoughts.
You were ready to be back to normal, ready to tell him what was on your mind and what you had been doing on these late nights. You hated that he had doubted your loyalty because you would die before ever making him feel like that but you couldn't give him the level of honesty you wished you could.
Months carried on like this and you were starting to lose yourself in the pressure to make this work while also keeping yourself active and healthy in your relationship, learning from your mistakes and refusing to let Jungkook slip through the cracks in your search for the grander picture.Â
There were a dozen more days where you curled into bed feeling drained and useless, crying softly while Jungkook asked you what's wrong before eventually giving up and just holding you. Similar days where he came home from work with furrowed brows and a slammed truck door, not even stopping to take off his boots before he was disappearing into a half an hour long shower.Â
Finally, after almost two years of feeling like you had left a part of yourselves somewhere along the journey of finding each other, you received the call you had been waiting for. It happened on a random Tuesday while you were at work, heart tightening as you recognized the area code and quickly excused yourself to the break room.
Your words were hushed and your eyes were teary but suddenly you could breathe again and you poured endless thank yous into the phone, leaving for your lunch break without even clocking out and hoping you could catch Jungkook at home before he went back to work.Â
He was standing there in the kitchen when you arrived and you took a second to stand in the driveway and watch him through the small window above the sink. He looked like he was singing something and you could tell by the movement of his shoulders that he was cleaning up whatever dishes he had used for lunch, your heart lurching with the need to run in and see him clearly.
YOu were thankful for this small house and how it had allowed you to maintain some semblance of normalcy while you pushed forward but you were ready to say goodbye and now you finally could after a few more baby steps. You'd been running for so long and now you could take a breather, pushing through the door and throwing yourself into his arms before he could even greet you.Â
Jungkook was confused but not ever going to deny you anything so he wrapped tightly around you, back tensing when he heard your soft cries and then releasing when he realized it was from happiness.Â
It was impossible to not tell him everything right then and there but you held it back the best you could, pulling back to look at him with wet cheeks and the brightest smile he had seen from you in over a year. You at least promised him you could tell him tomorrow and that he just needed to trust you and be patient, the easiest thing when it came to you.
The next morning you pulled a pair of boots from the very back of your closet and bounced a little in them once they were fully on, your smile not having faded since you woke up. Jungkook was clueless but your happiness was all that mattered to him and it was infectious, giving you a strange look when you giggled and placed one of his hats from storage on his head.Â
He raised an eyebrow from under the rim and wrapped his arms around your back as you stood there feeling like you were both wearing costumes, his bottom lip pulled between his two prominent front teeth as he bit back a smile.Â
Youâd dragged him out to the truck and reminded him to trust you as you gave off directions, taking you out of the suburbs and so far away from the city you felt like you could finally catch your breath. Jungkook felt anxiety itching under his skin considering how out of the loop he was but you scooted across the bench seat to press against him and it waved off of him.Â
The truck went silent as you pulled up to a small farm house and Jungkook said nothing for a long time, so long that you wondered if he had figured out where you were and what you were there for.Â
âCâmon.â You encouraged softly with a nod of your head as you climbed out of the truck and onto the loose gravel road. You stood still as you stared at the house and the land surrounding it and you could hear his door slamming shut from behind you, turning to face him with a smile and an extended hand.Â
âTalk to me.â He said softly but it was a bit firm around the edges and you could tell the mystery was starting to actually get to him a little bit, feeling left out regardless if you assured him it was for the better. He still gripped your hand like it was a lifeline and you stood there staring at him for a few seconds.Â
It was impossible to figure out where to start, what part of the timeline to pick up from and how much detail you wanted to get into right now. You decided you wanted this moment to be exactly what it was and you could break it down for him later as much as he wanted.
âWe own it.â You said it so simply that there was no room for misinterpretation, especially considering the way you glanced over your shoulder back at the house with excitement radiating off of you.
He let out a long breath and you paused to watch him go through a range of things. First confusion as his eyebrows furrowed and his eyes narrowed, gaze past you and on the house and the porch that wrapped around it. Then came understanding and his body looked light like he was about to collapse before his eyes were welling up with tears and he took a step backwards, hand over his mouth as he ran it over his jaw to try and ground himself.
âJungkook.â You said gently as you took a few steps forward, holding him by the waist softly with one hand with your other one resting where his racing heart laid. âTake a breath, I need you to breathe.â
There was a nod like he understood you but you werenât sure he did, cupping his face instead and taking an exaggerated breath yourself so he could parrot it back to you.Â
âHow?â He eventually pushed out and you shook your head at him with a look that told him you could talk about it later. Right now you wanted this to be all that mattered and luckily he knew your heart and knew immediately that's what you wanted, nodding silently and pulling you in for a tight hug.Â
It wasnât the grand farmhouse that Jungkook had grown up with, lacking the miles and miles of acres that made up his childhood and the beginning of your story together but it was yours and that's all that mattered. There was a rocking chair on the porch, a large kitchen for you to laugh as you did dishes together, and stars that stretched for miles and miles.Â
Most importantly, there was a small stable out past the main barn that held a reserved spot for one specific horse. Jungkook had nearly collapsed in tears when he heard the sounds of him neighing in the distance as you approached the house, knowing right away that it was Lucky.
Youâd gone back to your current house later that night after walking through everything with teary eyes and the desire to make this place yours, to build memories to laugh a lifetime as you began a new path together. You sat down on your bed and had a long talk about everything.Â
There was hurt in his eyes as you confessed you had been talking with his mother and then devastation when you told him she had been in a legal battle with your father. She had gathered enough evidence of his blackmail and abusive behavior regarding his ownership of the Jeonâs farm to sue him ten times over and he eventually conceded with a large payout.Â
He started to cry again when you softly told him that they owned it all now, having paid more than enough over the years for it to be fully settled and for everything to be transferred over to them. His parents may have caused his harm but it felt like a weight off of his soul to know they didnât have to worry about losing their life's work ever again and that they no longer had to struggle to keep up with your fathers financial demands.
You went on to explain that his mother had included you in her claims, insisting she saw parental neglect and monetary alienation from a young age. You imagined your father figured it would be easier to also pay you off than to go through with fighting against you and Nari any longer.Â
It wasnât much and it left a sour taste in your mouth to accept anything from him, even if it was taken from him and not charity. You felt sick when the money hit your account and even worse when you had to sign paper work that cited you would no longer associate yourself with your family name or business under any circumstance.Â
The feeling hadnât left you but you knew it would all be worth it.Â
Nari had helped you find the perfect home, transporting Lucky herself with the help of other people in town who had cared for Jungkook since he was young. His father hadnât said a word about it the entire time from your knowledge and you didnât bring him up when explaining everything.
You could see it in the hard lines of his face that he was curious but he didn't ask and you didn't tell.Â
There was nothing to describe the feeling of finally getting to tell him all of this and to see the look in his eyes, so obviously unable to express to you what this all meant to him. Nobody had ever done anything for him let alone something to this grand scale and for a man of few words already, he had absolutely none to offer.
Luckily that was never an issue between the two of you and you knew exactly what he wanted to say just by the way he was staring at you, the passion behind the kiss he gave you when you finally got him all caught up.
You knew there were still loose ends you needed to tie up with your current jobs and lease but the knowledge that you had a new future out where the stars were bright and the air was lighter made your entire world view shift back in a way that set your mind free.
It was second nature to climb into his truck with boxes upon boxes behind you and your cats in the seat next to you, your beautiful boy on the opposite side with his button up shirt on and his sleeves rolled up. You leaned your head on his shoulder and closed your eyes as you felt the smooth city roads roughen up again, a smile building on your lips.
His hand wrapped around your knee and you felt your heart soar again.

Iâm confused on whether jungkook leaves with her or drops her off and is forced to go back to the farm
He leaves with her! I like to imagine they move somewhere nice and quiet eventually where he can do his farmer boy stuff and she can still disappear between the buildings when she needs to

Growing up in the city had influenced a few factors of your core development and the way you went about life. You took a second to open up to strangers, had faster reflexes than most people youâd met from other places and could ignore the sound of a horn two feet from your ear.Â
What it hadnât done is making you a spoiled and sheltered brat, although you imagined your father would place some strong disagreement on that statement.Â
It absolutely had not made you the type of person that was so âout of controlâ you needed to be sent to the middle of absolute nowhere to learn a thing or two about respect and taking care of things other than yourself.
This was not an issue you had and you could not fathom the fact you had been in the car for six hours now heading towards your new summer hell. You were in your early twenties and you should have slammed the door in your fathers face when you opened it to his scowl but sadly, his name was on the lease and he probably would have had the door removed.
Instead you had packed two bags, said bye to your precious cats and dragged your feet all the way to the car.
You imagined your fathers vehicle had never seen so much dirt in its life and even he seemed a bit bothered by the gravel roads that left a cloud of dust all over his doors and windows. Your father had been raised almost exactly the same as you so it felt a bit ironic and hypocritical.
It was not your fault he was a wealthy businessman, stationing his small family in the bustling streets of the city instead of a nice sized home somewhere. Your idea of dinner around the table was grabbing a bite to eat at the local pizza place, your fridge covered in project plans and work reminders instead of toddler art and positive report cards.
Your dad had raised you in a cold apartment suited for a bachelor, leaving you to get your fatherly advice from doormen and paying cleaning ladies extra to change your diapers. He was somehow still surprised to see you standing with a glare on your face as you exited the car and stared at the farm house.Â
âAtleast try to be pleasant.â He mumbled under his breath, the familiar expression he had whenever he felt embarrassed by you creeping up on his face. You had seen it your entire life, when you stood too slouched in front of a client or stuttered giving a speech at a company dinner.Â
You sent him a stronger dirty look that easily slid off your face when the door opened.Â
Despite what he may think, you actually were not a terrible person and you had no intentions of disrespecting the home owners even though you would rather eat the horses hay than have to stay here.
It was actually a beautiful home, grand in size with a large wraparound porch and land full of crops and various sized barns and pens.Â
There had been a faint memory of coming here a handful of times when you were younger, listening to your father take a gentle and relaxed tone you had only heard a few times and playing with the farmers boy that was around your age.
That had been a lifetime ago and while the landscape was relatively nostalgic and familiar, you had changed so drastically that you couldnât feel more out of place if you tried.Â
You watched as the large bearded man approached your father, pulling him into a tight hug unlike his friends back home who would greet him with a firm handshake. This man clearly did not care about your fathers hesitance to embrace him, the rim of his cowboy hat knocking your fathers thin framed glasses slightly askew.
You had a hard time holding in a laugh at his dishevelled appearance after the bear hug and the man's sights set on you right as a smile crept up on your face.
âThere she is.â He greeted you like he was an uncle you saw frequently and your eyes widened at the realization he was coming to give you a similarly tight hug, knocking the breath out of you as he nearly lifted you from the ground.
âSorry honey, we are huggers around here.â You hadnât even noticed the small woman behind his staggering frame and you caught her gentle eyes in your gaze right before she pulled you in for a much softer hug. âExcept for my son sadly. He didnât quite inherit that trait I suppose.â
The boy hadnât left the porch, a few feet behind his parents as he stared at you and your father with an expression that was much colder than his warm parents held. You could tell he had already built some bias around your visit and you didnât mind considering you had done the same, defenses building at his sour look.
âIâm sorry but I..â You trailed off awkwardly as you glanced between the bubbly couple, hoping they could understand so you didnât have to tell them vocally that you had no idea who they were. The woman's face dropped just slightly but the farmer gave you a soft smile as he cupped your arm.
âThatâs alright honey.â His gentle tone almost made you want to turn around and jump head first into the car, creeping its way under your skin and making you feel like that little girl that used to sneak branches in her room to use as a christmas tree. âItâs been lifetimes since we got to see you.â
His gaze fell over your shoulder towards your father with that statement and you almost thought it sounded hostile, or however hostile somebody so warm could manage. Your fathers throat clearing behind you confirmed your belief and you looked down at your feet as you were ushered inside.Â
You learned from listening in on the conversation silently that he was in fact a bit upset with your father. The man, Minchul apparently as you heard his wife softly calling him, had made a handful of comments about missing out on your life that he was attempting to disguise as jokes.
You had watched enough tense conversations with businessmen to be pretty good at picking up on what people actually wanted to say. Your father responded each time with a different excuse about being busy but you knew he wished he could tell the farmer that he simply outgrew him and whatever this dynamic was.
The woman had told you softly that her name was Nari and you watched as she barely sat down, bouncing between the table and the kitchen whenever she noticed somebody was running low on their drink or the finger foods she had prepared.Â
Her tending to you all didnât feel like the panicked way your fathers cooks would try to keep him pleased and calm but rather like she enjoyed taking care of the people around her, eyes bright whenever you thanked her or took a bite of something she had made.
âJungkook will be helping her with her chores and duties.â Minchulâs low voice was bringing you back to the conversation, interest spiked as you realized they were discussing your stay there.Â
You had very little information about how long you would be here or what exactly you were meant to accomplish but your eyes shifted over to the son at the mention of his name, sitting across from you and also not having spoken a word.Â
He was staring at his father as he spoke, gaze unwavering and still as cold as it had been outside. You had realized outside that he was the same boy you had played with when you were a kid but he had clearly changed as much as you had because he no longer had an ounce of welcoming energy to him.
âIf she gives you any trouble son, feel free to call me.â Your father was speaking directly to him like you werenât even there and Jungkookâs jaw shifted at the use of the word âsonâ.Â
A smile almost crept back up at the interesting reaction but it faded as soon as he looked at you, curious like he expected you to say something snobbish in return to your fathers jab. You didnât have any plans to, used to him warning people about you like you were a walking disaster.
âIâm sure we can manage.â His voice was flat and lacking any real care but you hadnât figured he would reply at all, let alone with something borderlining disrespectful.Â
The rest of the table seemed to agree because the room fell silent at his comment and your dad seemed taken back by the fact Jungkook hadnât immediately agreed with his implication. You barely moved, not wanting to put yourself on the wrong side of things while he was still here.
âApologize.â Minchul was speaking the word hushed and you looked at him with widened eyes, not even realizing it had been him speaking considering how cold it came out. It was completely different to the tone he used with the rest of you but Jungkook didnât seem affected at all.
âIâm sorry sir.â He said it easily, practiced and lacking any real apology. It seemed the phrase alone was all his father wanted to hear because his shoulders lost tension and he awkwardly patted the table as he changed the subject to something about your dads car.
You removed yourself mentally from the conversation again but you caught the way Jungkookâs mom rubbed his shoulder soothingly as she passed him on her back to the kitchen.
----
âYou are really just leaving me?â Your voice was icy as you watched your father toss your bags out of his car, squinting his eyes at the dirt it brought into the air and glaring at you like it was your fault. âI donât even know these people.â
âI do.â He said simply as he closed the trunk and watched you with disappointment swirling in his gaze. You could tell there was a lot he wanted to say to you but as always, he left it plain and gave you a firm nod that you knew put an end to this conversation.
You did nothing but watch as he got into the driver seat and pulled off down the dirt road, headlights disappearing behind the trees and fields of corn. You sighed softly and sunk down on the rocky path way, not really caring if they were watching from the window and judging you.
You didnât know these people and it was hard to even process that this was really happening to you right now. The sun had fully set when you stopped thinking yourself away and you realized you had been outside for a lot longer than you had meant to be.Â
Nobody had come out to get you or even check if you were alright but you figured they were just giving you the space to throw your internal tantrum before inevitably accepting your fate and figuring out what to do from there.
Your sigh turned into a dragged out and low groan as you buried your face in your dusty hands, cringing away when you felt the sting of the debris entering your eyes and realizing you felt like you were going to cry regardless of the pain.
âYou sleeping out here?â
You jumped at the sudden voice coming from your right, looking sideways at a pair of dirty and ripped boots before trailing up the tall frame and landing on Jungkook and a raised eyebrow. He had been the last person from the family you expected to come outside to collect you and you groaned again.
âI just need a minute okay?â Your voice came out cold but you couldnât find it in yourself to care about his feelings right now. He was unwillingly participating in your banishment but it was still participation in your eyes and for that alone, you disliked him.
âCity girls and their minutes.â It was mumbled under his breath but loud enough for you to hear. You didnât even warrant it with a reaction, staring numbly at the gravel and willing a loose horse to run him over with your mind.Â
He didnât leave the entire time you sat there and you could feel him staring at your back as you practically curled into a ball. Eventually you stood up calmly, dusted yourself off and headed inside the house.
----
Jungkook had silently left your bags at the foot of your door and disappeared down the hall into what you assumed was his own, soft music coming from behind the peeling wood. You left your door open, feeling awkward in the unfamiliar room like you had somehow broken into this nice family's home and crawled into a random bed.
You barely slept at all the first night and the sound of the roosters screeching only two hours after your eyes actually closed was enough to make you consider hitch hiking back to the city.Â
The entire family was downstairs in the kitchen to your dismay and you couldnât fix your face in time, seeing the concern radiating from Nari as she took in your exhausted eyes and closed off demeanor. You mumbled a morning greeting and shifted onto the seat furthest from them all.
âDid you sleep okay?â She asked softly as she placed a glass of orange juice in front of you and you nodded at her, both of you knowing you were being nice rather than honest. She pursed her lips and placed a gentle hand on your shoulder for a second as reassurance that she understood.Â
âGood because you have a long day today.â Minchul sounded as cheerful as yesterday but there was an underlying tone to his voice that made you not want to disobey him. He made pleasant conversation with his wife as you and Jungkook ate silently on the other side of the table.
Jungkook hadnât even waited for you to finish eating, cleaning off his place and kissing his mom on the side of the head before pushing through the front door. You watched in disbelief as he left you behind, scarfing down the rest of your eggs and rushing after him, nearly tripping down the stairs as you followed him to the largest barn.
The smell was assaulting but you didnât visually react, not wanting to give him the satisfaction considering he was leaning against a slate of wood and watching you for any signs that you were going to complain.
When you gave him a firm and determined stare he was tossing a silver bucket in your direction, both of you tracking it as it hit the barn floor and bounced a few times.
âSeriously?â You remarked, your first real word of the day being forced out due to disbelief. He didnât answer and instead entered one of the stalls holding a large cow. âCouldnât just hand it to me?â
There was no reply again and you sighed as you followed him, scowling when you saw the black and white animal staring at you with a bored expression. Jungkook slid a small stool over to you before leaning back again on the wall of the stall. The cow took a step towards him and you flinched back as its large belly almost pushed you over.Â
âAm I supposed to do something with him?â You gestured at the stool and cow in confusion and Jungkook raised an eyebrow.Â
âSheâs a girl.â He said simply and you gave him an incredulous look, feeling like you were going insane from attempting to communicate with him. âYouâre supposed to milk her.â
You stared at him silently for a few seconds, trying to figure out if he was joking or not before glancing at the bucket and realizing he was apparently very serious. You took a breath so deep that it moved your entire body as you tried to calm yourself, ignoring the slightly amused look he grew at the action.Â
You hadnât even sat fully on the stool before he was speaking again.
âWrong.â
You glared at him and adjusted your position, leaning forward hesitantly to reach out to the cow.Â
âWrong again.â
Another attempt, a different section of the utters that looked as foreign as the rest of the large creature. She shifted like she felt as awkward as you did for touching her and you sighed at his lack of interjection.
âTouch her there and sheâll probably kick you in the face.â
You let out a loud and bitter laugh that made the cow grunt softly, standing from the stool and shoving it in his direction. He watched you quietly as the rage built up inside you, even more so at the indifference on his face.
âIf you arenât even going to attempt to help me, then you go ahead and do it.â You spat as you pointed between him, the bucket, and the cow. He didnât say anything again and the silence was somehow more annoying than him making small comments towards you.Â
He wordlessly moved the stool and you sat down with a huff, at first just picking at your fingers and then deciding to actually watch as he milked the cow. It was slightly interesting, especially considering your current options for entertainment.
His hands were gentle with the animal and she seemed a lot more relaxed now that he was the one near her undercarriage and not some strange girl with tense shoulders and shoes that definitely werenât made for a barn floor. It was intriguing to you to watch the cows body language change so outwardly.Â
Jungkook finished up after some time and you followed him to his next set of chores. This time and the next, he didnât bother trying to get you to do anything. Instead he did them all easily and allowed you to simply watch as he herded the sheep into their pens, poured disgusting sludge into the trough for the pigs and dragged the stubborn horses back into the gated area.Â
By the end of the day, you were exhausted without having done much at all.
He didnât even seem phased by the fact he had spent the entire day in the sun doing hard physical labor and you sighed as he walked ahead of you back to the house.Â
You felt like an invisible shadow following him around all day with little to no conversation between you and it pained you to watch the sun set knowing you had wasted your time and learned nothing but the fact Jungkook was a stubborn asshole.
His dad was waiting on the porch as you approached and you watched as Jungkookâs back hardened at the sight of the kind man. He was smiling largely but it was past his son and towards you, clapping his hands in delight as he took in the dirt on your pants and your sweat dried hair.Â
âHow was your first day?â He asked warmly as you ascended the steps. Jungkook had slowed down to let you pass and he lingered at the patch of grass near the bottom. âWas he a good teacher?â
The shift in his tone made you glance backwards towards the teacher in question and his flat face showed no sense of what he wanted you to say. You felt like you were hesitating too long and you turned back to Minchul with a soft smile.
âThe best. I learned a lot actually.â You said gently and he smiled proudly, a large hand between your shoulder blades as he led you inside for dinner.Â
Jungkook was as silent as always but he didnât look as unimpressed with you when you caught his eyes across the table. There was a beat of nothing before he gave you a small nod, enough for you to understand he appreciated you lying to his dad for him.
Dinner was calm and quiet as you zoned out from exhaustion and you barely flinched when his parents asked you to work together to get the dishes washed and dried quickly. You moved on autopilot to the sink and responded with a light mumble as they wished you both a goodnight.Â
Jungkook stood wordlessly next to you, taking each wet dish you handed him as he dried them precisely with a towel. It was quiet through the first half of the sink and then he was clearing his throat with a hint of awkwardness.Â
âYou didnât have to do that.â He said in a near whisper. You didnât even glance at him, handing over another dish casually.
âI didnât do anything but spare myself the awkwardness of watching you get lectured.â Your tone was flat like it genuinely meant nothing to you but you figured you both knew the reason you had done it. He seemed tense at your answer so you sighed softly. âI know what itâs like to have a dickhead for a father.â
He paused his movements when you said that and you wondered if it was the wrong thing to speak into the quiet kitchen before you heard him laugh softly under his breath.Â
It didnât take a psychologist to realize Jungkook had a different relationship with Minchul than most other people would. His cold and harsh tone towards his son seemed to come out of thin air the second he laid his eyes on the younger man and you felt yourself becoming more nosy than you should be.
Their dirty laundry was none of your business and you hurriedly finished dishes.Â
----
The next day's chore list actually seemed a bit more lax and you quickly understood that he must do all of the extremely difficult things at the end of the week.Â
Monday was more about maintenance and you felt a little guilty for doing nothing yesterday so you were glad that you could actually help with some smaller stuff, both going stir crazy from doing so little with yourself and also feeling useless the more he sweated and moved around.
You helped sweep loose hay from the stables, collected eggs from under the squawking hens and even assisted him in filling up the water barrels with fresh and clean gallons. You were actually feeling a little satisfied with yourself when the day started to come to a finish and you glanced at him to see what you had to do next.
He surprised you when he pulled two small items out of his jean pockets, fidgeting with them until the lighter was producing a flame that he used to light the rolled up paper. You eyed him curiously as he inhaled around the joint before stretching his hand out towards you without so much of a glance or a word.
âWow.â You breathed out a mocking laugh as you took it from him, studying it before putting it between your lips and speaking around it. âI am genuinely shocked right now.â
He laughed flatly at your tone and looked at you from the corner of his eye. You were sitting on a small hay bale while he leaned against the large wheel of an old tractor, behind one of the barns a bit further away from the house.Â
âItâs rude to make assumptions about people.â He said flatly as he took the joint back but you knew he wasnât serious, lightheartedly replying to you and only furthering your bewilderment.
âWhat would your dad say if he knew you were getting me stoned right now?â You were only teasing and you hoped he could tell by the tone in your voice, it seemed like he did because he shrugged his shoulders casually.Â
âLess what he would say and more what he would do.â
The statement was heavier than he intended it to be and you both fell silent at the darker implication to his words. He passed it back to you and you watched him for a long moment before hitting it, seeing the way he almost winced at himself for saying something so awkward.Â
You let it hang in the air for a few minutes as you listened to the sounds of his inhales paired with the animals in the distance as they got ready for bed. EVentually you were sighing and his eyes went to you, almost in anticipation.
âGood thing I donât tend to make a habit of reporting back to fathers.â You lifted your shoulders like it was a simple thing to say and his face flashed with something heavier again.Â
Youâd smoked weed before a few times but Jungkook either had some especially strong country grown shit or your tolerance had significantly diminished because you somehow ended up in one of the sheep fields, both flat on your backs as you looked up at the stars.
For once you appreciated the fact he didnât talk much because you felt a bit ridiculously emotional at the sight of them all. A childhood of light polluted skies had robbed you of star gazing and pointing out made up planets so it was overwhelming to see so many of them above you.Â
Jungkook seemed to be thinking similarly despite growing up under this sky, his mouth parted a bit in awe every time you glanced over at his side profile a few feet away from you.
âI get why you guys like it out here now I think.â You said wistfully, voice a little breathier than you realized it was when it was escaping you. He laughed a little at the sudden declaration and it didnât seem as mocking as it had a few hours ago.Â
âThought it would take longer to whip you into shape.â He joked back, voice a little higher than normal and you figured it was the high having settled in that was making him more comfortable to engage in conversation with you. âSome sweeping and a view was all you needed to appreciate the simple life?â
He was clearly messing with you and almost mocking your fathers reasoning for sending you here but you felt a light sting deep in your chest.Â
Jungkook was not the reason for it but he was the accidental messenger of the rhetoric your father had been spewing at you since nearly middle school. He couldnât fathom a world where you cared about things or paid attention to people other than yourself.
It felt impossibly suffocating to argue with somebody who had a different reality in their head, left wondering how would you begin to correct a version of yourself that didnât exist?Â
There were no number of saved movie tickets and sentimental souvenirs, no hours spent making your friends a sloppy birthday cake instead of buying them something store prepared, and no amount of love and empathy in your heart that could convince him you were a thoughtful person.Â
âThere's nothing simple about this.â You ignored your heavier feelings as you raised a limp hand to gesture to the endless sky.
âIâm sure the city has its own views.â He retorted and you turned your head to the side when you noticed a hint of longing in his voice. He stiffened like he could feel you staring but didnât look at you, eyes a bit more shifty.Â
âBreathtaking ones. I never get used to it.â You said back softly, wondering if that was something he wanted to hear or if it would fuel the fire to his apparent inner conflict. You were left wondering because he didnât reply to you.Â
The silence didnât last as long as usual, the intoxication in your lungs making you both a little less awkward and a little more lax when it came to unraveling useless information. He told you about the town's small population and how everyone he passed had probably changed his diapers at some point and you ranted about your cats back home and how guilty you felt for leaving them alone.
âWhy didnât you bring them here?â He said like it was an obvious option, maybe too high to remember that you werenât exactly on a purposeful vacation. Your silence seemed to remind him of this fact and he kissed his teeth in realization. âIâm sure they wouldnât mind.â
âYour parents?â You said in confusion, rolling over onto your side in the grass so you could face him and groaning softly at the tightness in your back. He glanced at you and nodded, still laying flat and staring at the sky in between looks. âI donât have anyone who would bring them here for me.â
Your voice barely held any bitterness, it was just the truth. It was a pretty big favor to ask even to somebody you would consider a friend and you didnât even really have any of those anyways.Â
âAssuming you donât know how to drive a stick.â He said thoughtfully and you shook your head with a light eye roll at his subtle jab. âI can take you.â
âWhat?â You sat up and he did the same, although avoiding looking at you head on. âWhy would you do that?â
He shrugged like it wasnât a big deal he just offered to drive you twelve hours round trip just to bring your two cats all the way back here. He glanced back towards the house, the warm glow of the porch lights small considering how far out you were, and then back up towards the never ending sky full of stars.Â
âGives me a break from chores.â He said noncommittally like he was offering to do a load of laundry for you.Â
You woke up the next morning with a soft knock on the guest bedroom door, opening it to see Jungkook leaning against the side of it with truck keys dangling around his finger. He gave them a little spin when he saw your eyes widen in surprise that he parents had actually agreed to the request he had made this morning after your conversation in the field.
You nod your head in understanding and close the door so you can hurriedly get ready, feeling a bit amused at the fact youâd been arguing only a few hours ago. Jungkook is silent when you find him in the living room and as he shows you to the truck, excitedly climbing into the passenger seat and waving goodbye to Nari who stands on the porch with a concerned look as she clutches a dish towel to her chest.
It felt beyond ridiculous that you were making this trip with somebody you barely knew and even worse, barely got along with.
He was silent for almost the entire first half of the drive, playing music from a rotating stack of CDâs and cursing under his breath whenever the truck made a particularly loud noise. It was comforting to feel the rumble underneath you as he shifted gears and passed miles and miles of barren farmland.Â
You had only been there for a couple days and you were already craving new scenery, eyes widening with excitement when you could vaguely make out the city skyline in the distance. You were still probably an hour out but it was undeniable the way your blood felt warmer.Â
âDo you see it?â You asked him excitedly, breaking the bubble of silence. You looked at him as you sat up but you didnât need to hear his answer out loud, seeing it on his face as soon as you saw his expression.
His eyes were bright with awe and interest as you approached the tall skyscrapers and dizzying highways, traffic seemingly coming from every direction as he went from leaning forward to try and see the tops of buildings past the windshield and focusing on not missing the exits you rushed out with poor directional skills.Â
âItâs bigger than I thought.â He eventually said and it came out in one singular breath that made you smile, understanding the feeling all too well.Â
You let him take it all in so he didnât get too distracted trying to navigate the busy and tight streets with hsi truck that stood out clearly compared to most of the more compact and practical vehicles around you.Â
You eventually managed to make your way to your apartment and he looked slightly surprised as he exited the driver seat and looked up at the building. He had heard stories of your dads lavish lifestyle so he clearly hadnât been expecting the exposed brick and dirty windows of your building.Â
It was hard not to laugh at his expression, shaking your head and walking past him. You felt giddy knowing you would get to be home even if it was temporary and you could hear your cats meowing behind the door before you even pushed it open.
You greeted them enthusiastically as Jungkook closed the door behind you, eyes scanning around your small and homey apartment.Â
âNot exactly the penthouse suite.â He muttered and you glared at him from where you were crouching by your cats on the floor.Â
âMust to his dismay.â You didnât need to say you were talking about your father for him to understand what you meant. âHe wonât even step foot in this place.âÂ
It felt especially ridiculous considering how nice and welcoming your apartment was. The walls were full of pictures of your friends and cats, postcards from random beachy cities covering your fridge door and mismatched furniture.
You had decided as soon as you moved in that you would make your place the polar opposite of the studio apartment you were raised in, trading in cold tile and sterile feeling lights for warm toned lamps and fuzzy rugs to comfort your feet.Â
âDo you need anything?â Your voice was softer than he had heard it before and Jungkook shook his head as he kicked his shoes off. You watched him quizzically before he gestured towards your clock on the wall.Â
âMight as well stay here tonight.â He said simply and your heart lurched at the idea of getting to sleep in your own bed. âIâm fine now but reckon Iâd be exhausted halfway through the drive back.â
You werenât even slightly planning to argue with that or question what his parents reaction would be, quickly standing to your feet to prepare something for him to wear other than his jeans and flannel. He stood there silently as you made him a comfortable bed on the couch, eventually wandering over to stare out your large living room window.
âBreathtaking right?â You spoke from behind him and he jumped a bit before nodding and glancing back at you.
âYeah itâs beautiful.â He watched you for a few seconds before turning back to study the city and its seemingly never ending skyline.Â
Jungkook must have been more tired than he let on because he was asleep almost as soon as he laid down on your couch and you took a few hours to enjoy your space for the last time in a while, preparing your cats and their things both for travel and for extended stay.
It warmed your heart to picture them with so much space to run around, basking in the sun and chasing field mice while you did your chores. Jungkook was clearly being generous with his offer to take you but he really had no idea just how much it meant to you to have them with you in such an unfamiliar place.Â
He was just as quiet the next morning and as you brought your cat carriers and extra bags down to the truck but the ride back was a lot warmer and you felt ages less sour as you approached the town this time around. The hushed conversations between you felt smoother as you lost some of the awkwardness.Â
His father was sitting on the porch when you pulled back up and he enthusiastically greeted your cats in their carriers, Nari rushing out at the sound of your voices to help bring them inside.Â
You watched from the doorway as he gave Jungkook a firm nod and placed a hand stiffly on his shoulder. Jungkook pursed his lips at the action of approval and returned the nod with one of his own.Â
âWas that good?â You whispered to him as he passed you in the doorway and he let out a large breath that you imagined he had been holding since he left the truck.
âYeah, I think it was.â He said back and you smiled at him, glad he had not gotten in trouble for trying to help you out.Â
The following week felt a lot easier now that you had a large piece of home with you, bed a little warmer with your cats curling up next to you. The chores were brutal and you were miserable half the time the sun was out but you were getting used to the ache of your body and the burn covering your skin.Â
Jungkook was still silent most of the day but he was doing things slower and more exaggerated so you could actually learn the few times he noticed you showing interest and paying attention. There were tasks you could do fully on your own now and you found yourself looking forward to when the sun would set and he'd knock on your door softly, an expectant look on his face as he flashed another joint between his fingers.
It was a nice routine for the two of you to wander out to the field near the sheep barn, smoking until the tightness of your bones faded enough for you to giggle into the grass and tell eachother random tidbits about your life.Â
âI heard your dad tell mine that you ran away.â Jungkook said gently one night when your conversation started to borderline on serious and you said nothing for a while.Â
âAt 22 I thought it would just be considered taking a vacation.â Your voice was half humorous and half bitter, the latter side much more apparent in your tone. You sighed so deeply you felt like you were going to melt down into the dirt. âIâve been further away for much longer, he only noticed this time because one of his clients saw me while traveling.â
âYou went alone?â His questions rarely held so much interest and you glanced at him, finding him staring at the stars with his eyebrows furrowed like he hadn't considered that possible.
âIâm always alone.â You shrugged to yourself. âAren't you?â
You werenât trying to make a harsh assumption but youâd been there two weeks and not once did Jungkook leave the farm land other than your trip to the city. His parents went off to town a few times a week or to a friend's house for supper but Jungkook stayed throughout it all, never once hearing mention of a friend of his or seeing a photo somewhere in the house.
He shrugged but it was one of those times where you both already knew what his answer would be. His eyes shifted over to you and you watched curiously.Â
âNot so much anymore.â He said plainly but you smiled a bit at the implication, knowing it was probably a change for him to have you following behind his trail all day long. Maybe even a welcomed change now that you were getting along finally. ly.
You and Jungkook spent the next week with the exact same routine and now that you were used to most of it, you felt yourself going stir crazy. Little things were always changing, animals needing more help than usual or storms making it so you had to help around the house instead but for the most part everything stayed exactly the same.Â
It was a welcomed assignment when Nari softly asked you to take horses into town and pick up a few things. You didnât ask why you couldnât just take the truck even though you were beginning to wish you had as you stared at the large creature.
âYou know I canât ride that, right?â You said simply as you shook your head firmly. Jungkook laughed a little at your fearful tone before gesturing at the single saddle he had pulled off of the wall.Â
You were confused for a few seconds before realizing he was insinuating you both get on the horse together, your gaze shifting over to him to see him standing by the horse and clearly waiting for you to reach the same conclusion.Â
âYouâre joking arenât you?â Your voice shook a little as you squeaked out the question.Â
Clearly he wasnât because Jungkook had easily lifted you up onto the large horse before swinging his leg over and situating himself naturally. You were left sitting behind him, feeling like you were about to throw up and having no choice but to wrap your arms tightly around his middle.
He was laughing at you when you squeezed your grip anytime you took a turn or the horse sped up to cross a road. It felt a bit ridiculous as some cars passed you but you saw more and more horseback people as you got closer to town and almost all of them enthusiastically greeted Jungkook.Â
The stories he had told you about knowing everybody here were clearly true because he couldnât be more liked if he tried.
It didnât take long to arrive at the market and Jungkook reached a hand up to you so you could slide off the horse, his hands sturdy above your hip so you didnât land the wrong way. You eyed him as he tied the large animal to a post outside, petting its nose softly and whispering something you didnât hear.
A whistle behind you made his hands freeze and both of you turned to see an older man sitting outside the market, a bucket full of loose change infront of him and a brown paper bag around a glass bottle sat on his lap.Â
âPretty little thing.â His accent was even heavier due to the slur in his speech and your eyes narrowed as he scanned down your frame. Jungkookâs mother had left some pretty farm dresses and cowgirl boots outside your door a few nights ago and you had been excited to wear them until his eyes were on your bare legs. âAinât from around here.â
It was a statement and not a question and you scoffed at him.
âWhat gave it away?â You said coldly. You knew you still didnât carry yourself like somebody from the country even when you wore their clothes and did their labor, the lack of a drawl in your voice really not helping you towards fitting in.Â
You could feel the presence of Jungkook approaching behind you now that he had gotten the horse situated and you glanced over your shoulder. His face was cold again and he was a lot closer to you than he typically would be, nearly touching your back to his chest.Â
âJohnny.â He said simply, addressing the man and making himself known.Â
âOh youâre Jeonâs boy aint you?â He said with an amused smile, looking like he was suddenly reminiscing. Jungkook must have nodded or given him a confirming look because the man was suddenly laughing so hard he was swaying to the side. âThem Jeonâs⊠are good men.â He pointed at Jungkook as he paused, then laughed loudly again.
You felt yourself reaching back and wrapping your hands around Jungkookâs elbow before you could think about it, going to pull him towards the entrance so you both could leave this conversation and not hear whatever it was he was laughing so hard about.Â
The man's eyes flashed with interest when he saw you touching his arm, hugging it to your side in a way that could come across as intimate rather than instinctual.Â
âOh, is this your missus?â He called and you saw an older couple's head turn with annoyance at his loud tone and the outdated phrasing, shaking their heads in disapproval.Â
Jungkookâs cheek shifted as he addressed you like that and you sighed at the realization this was going to take you too far off track for you to bother with. You tugged him softly and ignored the obnoxious laughter coming from behind you as you entered the market.
âJust ignore it.â You said softly, not letting go of his arm even when you were deeper into the store. He glanced at you like he was upset you hadnât let him handle it and that furthered your reasoning for keeping a hold on him.Â
âHe was disrespectful.â He said plainly, eyes still heated even when you stopped walking and turned to face him. The tips of your boots touched his as you reached into his shirt pocket to pull out the list his mother had given him, catching him stuffing it in there before you mounted the horse. âHow can he talk to a woman like that?â
âHe was a drunk idiot.â You stated, catching his eye for a second as you stood there before realizing how close you were and taking a step away.
Jungkook still seemed irritated as you shopped, filling a basket full of the ingredients his mom had written in neat handwriting. He took the basket from you when it was more than half full and starting to get a little heavy and you gave him a thankful look.Â
It was hard for him to stay annoyed considering the countless older women that stopped to coo at him and ask him how his parents were, remarking on the last time theyâd seen him and how tall and handsome he had grown up to be.
This was something you had also noticed, much to your dismay.Â
You figured you had been too distracted your first two weeks but your general dislike for your situation and Jungkook himself to realize the devastating fact that he was actually the most attractive person you had been around.
He was now constantly distracting you without even meaning to, tan skin and big eyes so effortlessly lifting things two times your size and controlling stubborn animals. It was a bit ridiculous that somebody with forearms that veiny and strong also looked that good in a stupid cowboy hat.Â
Even now, leaning against a fridge as he watched you scan over the list in his washed denim jeans and giant belt buckle. It was something straight out of a cowboy fantasy and you felt like a fool for falling victim to it.Â
It didnât help your new found dilemma that he was also the sweetest person you had ever met now that he was done giving you the silent treatment and glaring everytime you messed something up.
Whether it was natural southern hospitality or his mothers teachings, Jungkook was a well mannered boy down to his core and did not consider opening the door for you or carrying bags for the older women in the store anything other than the bare minimum.
You werenât surprised that he was so aggravated by the drunk man for eyeing you or calling you his missus, like you were a piece of property because that was just the type of guy Jungkook was.Â
âReckon we are almost done?â
And then there was that.
Your eyes shifted over to him as his voice broke you from your thoughts and you almost outwardly sighed in annoyance with yourself. Never once in your entire life had you considered that a southern accent might bring your heart into your throat but apparently that was just something that happened to you now.
You imagined Jungkook didnât even think he had an accent let alone realized how heavy it was but the low drawl and phrases he used made you feel like a preteen girl who had just discovered british boy bands for the first time.Â
âYeah pretty much, justâŠâ You trailed off as your eyes landed on a small booth tucked in the back corner of the vendor section.
Jungkook squinted at you before turning around and scoffing a little when he realized what had caught your attention so easily.Â
You felt like your feet were magnetically drawn to the rows of pretty farm dresses, lace bandanas and cowgirl hats. Your eyes were wide as you took them all in, already feeling your bank account emptying. The clothes Nari had been bringing you werenât hideous but they certainly werenât the most flattering things you had ever worn.
He stood there holding the baskets of groceries while you pointed out everything you wanted to the woman at the booth, smiling happily as you left the store with your arms full.Â
âYouâre ridiculous.â He said flatly as he shook his head and situated the grocery bags in the saddle bags on each side of the horse. His words lacked any heat and you rolled your eyes as you watched him.
âWhat I am, is sick of sharing a closet with your mother.â He shot you a look. âNo offense.â
A laugh escaped him as he finished, turning to you expectantly. It felt more natural now to step closer to the massive animal and he stared at you as you stood in front of him, making sure you were ready and nodding when you gave him an expectant look.
His hands were back on your hips, confirming to yourself that you were inching into delusional territory when your stomach lit up. He was easily lifting you almost above his head so you could swing your leg over the saddle, further forward than you had been.
You almost scooted back to your place but he was mounting before you could and you quickly realized he had placed you there purposefully, now sat behind you with his thighs on the outside of yours.
âOh so Iâm steering now?â You glanced back at him and he looked amused, taking off his hat and adjusting it before placing it on your head. You squinted at him and his mischievous expression before quickly facing forward when he was kicking his foot and whistling lowly to get the horse to start to move.
âLucky is good to learn on.â He said simply and you suddenly considered steering you both into a lake when you heard his low voice now behind you and near your ear. âHeâs gentle.â
âHeâs huge.â You remarked plainly and this time when he breathed out a short laugh you could feel it on the back of your neck.
You rode in pleasant silence and the sun was far less brutal now that it was starting to set, the little bit of shine kept out of your eyes by his hat sitting comfortably on your head. You tried to ignore that flutter in your chest at the fact you were wearing his hat and riding his horse, back pressed to chest even if it was just for safety.
âDoes it ever get annoying living in such a small town?â You mused in a calm voice after another group of people waved to Jungkook. âRunning into ex girlfriends all the time I bet.â
He didnât respond right away and you swore you thought you felt him tensing behind you. You glanced over your shoulder at him, hoping to find him wearing an amused expression and instead he was just staring at you blankly.
Your eyebrows furrowed for a long second before you were turning back forward with a mouth parted in understanding.
Suddenly it was awkward and you mentally punched yourself for being the one to bring the uncomfortable air to the conversation. Neither of you said anything and you somehow decided that was worse than whatever was about to come out of your mouth.
âSorry. Thereâs nothing wrong with that, you know?âÂ
âJust stop talking.â He grunted behind you, sounding more pained and embarrassed than angry with you. âIt makes it way worse when you say stuff like that.â
You werenât sure how anything could make it better but you genuinely didnât think any less of Jungkook for not having a girlfriend before, if anything it felt a bit ridiculous considering what he looked like but you definitely could not say that to him.Â
Instead you just fell into a silence that you hoped wasnât marking the return of your feud. You gave him another apologetic look in the barn after he helped you down and he sighed softly when he saw it, giving you his habitual nod and taking his hat off of your head gently so he could wear it again.
You found yourself unusually bored without the company of Jungkook who had disappeared into his room almost as soon as you got back.Â
You ended up sitting on one of the rocking chairs on the porch, your more affectionate cat napping in your lap while the other brushed against the wood arches. You were attempting to write in your journal but your mind was blanking or rather full of other things.
There was genuine guilt inside of you for accidentally making Jungkook feel embarrassed but you werenât really sure what to do about it, finding him hard to read when it came to certain things.Â
It was easy to tell when he was tired of a particularly repetitive chore, when he felt irritated by his dad more than usual, and when he was getting moody because he was hungry but how did you make him feel better about something like this without making him more humiliated when you brought it up again.
The boy in question was interrupting your string of thoughts and half composed apologies when he was bursting through the front door.Â
You sat up quickly, eyes wide from the way it slammed against the side of the house and cracked on its old hinges. You were just opening your mouth to ask him what had happened when Minchul was storming out right behind him, his belt in his hand and an expression that made your blood run cold.
âDo it again until it's right.â He was screaming down the porch at Jungkookâs tense back that didnât stop moving.Â
He didnât seem afraid necessarily but rather furious as he made his way to one of the barns, shoulders squared and barely giving you a glimpse of the glare on his face before he slammed the large door shut and disappeared inside.Â
âThat damn boy is useless.â Minchul spat to himself and you stared at him with a shocked and fearful glance. He faltered when he noticed you sitting there and sighed softly, body relaxing just enough for you to narrow your gaze. âSorry you had to see that honey. You think he would know better by now.â
You didnât dare respond to him, not trusting yourself to hold back from saying something that would get you or Jungkook in any trouble, or any more in his case. Your eyes drifted to the belt in his tight grip and he sighed again before heading back inside.Â
Supper was painfully silent and you felt terrible for Nari considering she had spent hours preparing it.Â
You made sure to hum softly after every few bites, exaggerating the noise so she would know you found it delicious. She gave you a knowing look across the table and smiled at you, breaking the quiet with a soft question about how you liked the town.Â
It was unlike you to speak at the dinner table but the men were clearly abandoning that role for the night so you and her exchanged gentle small talk while you all ate, trying to make the room feel less suffocating.Â
Youâd understood after the first few nights that it was expected of you and Jungkook to do the dishes so you hugged Nari goodnight and drifted over to the sink.
You didnât say anything, didnât ask him if he was okay in fear of making it even worse. His shoulders were still tense like they had been earlier and the look on his face was bugging you, not used to seeing it compared to his usual expressions.
âIâm sorry.â He surprised you by being the first to speak, a low mutter as he took a wet plate from you and dried it off. âHe shouldnât have done that in front of you.â
You wanted to retort that he shouldn't have done it at all but that felt stupid and obvious, something you both already knew and didnât need to voice. You just shook your head at his apology, not needing to accept one from him.
âYouâre a good man Jungkook.â You finally decided to say plainly, not emotion in your voice so he could take the words as simple and true as they were.Â
He faltered with his hand in mid air, only a brief second before he was taking another dish.
When you were done washing you leaned against the counter next to you, watching him and waiting for him to finish up. He wasnât looking at you but you knew he felt you staring. He sighed when he dried the last one and finally turned towards you.
âWhy are you lookinâ at me like that princess?â He said with exhaustion lacing his words and although the name was mocking, it still sent a jolt through your body.Â
âYou know youâre handsome right?â You werenât trying to flirt with him, especially not with this awkward air from what you had seen. You were just genuinely wondering if he had even noticed, unable to tell by the way he carried himself.
Jungkook stared at you with an unchanging expression, like he was waiting for you to say something else or even laugh at him.Â
It wasnât the first time you noticed the sheer size of him, not exactly the tallest man youâd met but certainly making up for it by the width of his shoulders and the broad muscle on his chest. His father was a naturally large man with a round belly and tall stature but you imagined Jungkook could take him quite easily in terms of strength.
âCâmere.â You baited softly, not moving from the counter and just watching him with an almost expressionless face. He took a few seconds but his feet were eventually moving and he was a few feet closer to you now.
Your hand was on his arm, gentle and tracing as you squeezed it lightly but kept your gaze locked on his face. His body was locked with tension as he looked at you, almost curiously.Â
âNo girlfriends but..â You faded off when you saw the flash of annoyance pass over his face, not liking that you were bringing this back up again. âHave you ever hooked up with someone?â
The question lingered in the air adn you almost wondered if he was planning on rejecting you. He hadnât done anything that made you think he was necessarily interested in you the way you were becoming interested in him but you knew you were relatively pretty and he clearly didnât mind your company, showing it in his own stoic way.
âWhatâs it matter?â He mumbled back, shifting a step or two closer like he hadnât realized he was.
His lack of an actual answer inside the response told you what you needed to know and he seemed to understand that considering the way he sighed.
âDo you think Iâm judging you?â
Your head had cocked as you said it and he let out a humorless laugh at the earnest way you asked it.
âArenât you?â He retorted and it was a bit more heated than his voice had been before, defenses clearly up despite the way your hand was still smoothing over his arm as you had this conversation. âIâm not some loser.â
Your eyebrows furrowed at the outburst, wondering when he had drawn that conclusion. It wasnât that surprising that a southern boy would associate sexual experience with masculinity or social class but you shook your head.
âI already told you what I think of you Jungkook.â You answered back, stopping your hand from rubbing his skin and letting it just rest instead. âI think youâre a good man.â Your tone was gentle and smooth so he didnât have any reason to think you were making fun of him. âAnd that youâre handsome.â
Your hand moved to sit on his firm chest and you could feel the way his heart raced underneath your palm, fast and pounding as you stared up at him. Jungkook might genuinely be the most beautiful man youâd ever seen, sun kissed skin and scars littering his body from a lifetime of hard work.Â
His features were strong and manly but paired with gentle eyes that watched you quizzically and you were sighing softly without even meaning to. You hoped you werenât overwhelming him with your sudden forwardness but there was only so much time you could spend watching him think lowly of himself before you longer to inform him of the way others viewed him.
You leaned up on your tippy toes while simultaneously bringing his face down so you could kiss him softly, thumb rubbing his jaw and cheek.Â
He only hesitated for a second before he was kissing you back, taking a few steps forward until your back was hitting the counter again but this time with his body pressing against yours. Your mouths moved together eagerly and you made a small noise when his hands were on your hips, yours moving to play with the hairs touching the back of his neck.
His height and size was making you feel crazy as he tugged you against him, his strong arms around you and the thought of how easily he had lifted your entire body earlier made you feel warm as you made out desperately.Â
The sound of someone clearing their throat was making you jump away from each other and your eyes were both wide with panic as you saw his mother standing at the bottom of the stairs in her nightgown. Your chest was rising and falling both from the intense make out session and embarrassment.Â
âI-â You squeaked out in an attempt to explain but nothing followed and you almost thought his mom looked amused.
âGoodnight.â She said softly before turning back around like she hadn't seen anything. Youâd expected to be sent up to your rooms for the night but clearly she was attempting to meddle by leaving you alone again.Â
The tension had popped and you awkwardly looked at Jungkook.Â
Jungkook let out a shaky breath as he watched his mom go back upstairs, his heart still beating like a drum in his chest. His cheeks were still flushed red with embarrassment, and he ran a hand sheepishly through his hair as he looked at you with an unreadable expression.Â
He took a deep breath and the sound made you feel way worse. You shifted on your feet, not really knowing what to do in this situation. It felt so ridiculous that you couldnât help yourself from bursting out into soft laughter and he gave you a disbelieving look.Â
Your forehead fell against his chest as you laughed softly, eyes squeezed shut from embarrassment. You felt his body shaking slightly as he joined you in your giggle fit and you were glad he wasnât taking this as seriously as you feared he might.Â
You could feel his hand in your hair as he brushed it out of your face and your laughter faded off into a warm smile as you looked up at him, rocking onto your tiptoe to press against him in another kiss. It was much sweeter this time, lacking any real heat.
Only until his hands were back on your hips and then you couldnât stop yourself from parting your lips and pushing deeper, grateful he had understood what you wanted when he pushed you back against the counter and tilted his head with yours.Â
It was picking up in pace again and your tongue was moving against his bottom lip, whining softly when he licked against your own and bringing one of your hands back to rub his hard chest.
âYouâre a good kisser.â You remarked against his mouth and you could quite literally feel him smirk, the realization making you feel like you were truly going crazy.
âYouâre pretty.â He said back in that same monotone voice he always had and you smiled at the now familiar sound of it. His hands tensed against your hips and you quickly got what he wanted, kissing him again with more fever after his compliment towards you.Â
You werenât sure how you went from arguing with him a few weeks ago to making out desperately in his kitchen but it was hard to dislike the change in things when it felt so good, barely able to pull yourself away from him when he was whispering into your mouth that you needed to get some sleep.
He was right and you knew that but he practically had to maneuver you both towards the bedroom hall, stopping to kiss you along the way and laughing when your hands were stubborn in their exploration of his strong arms.Â
Youâd closed your door and immediately pressed your back against it as you sucked in a deep breath, waiting until you heard his own close down the hall before you were throwing yourself on the bed and screaming into the pillow.Â
----
The next morning left you feeling slightly anxious and embarrassed, nervous to face Jungkook with your new development and downright terrified to see his mother.
She was alone in the kitchen when you ventured down and you froze at the bottom of the staircase, considering turning around and booking it back up the stairs until her gentle gaze landed on you and it was too late.Â
âC'mon honey, I wonât bite.â She said with amusement lacing her words and your shoulders halfway relaxed. You blushed and walked fully into the room, avoiding the counter she had seen Jungkook pressing you against last night like it was infected.Â
âIâm so sorry maâam. I didnât mean to disrespect you and your house.â You said quickly with a sigh as you sat on one of the stools, not even planning to address it but unable to stop yourself from feeling foolish.Â
She watched you with patient eyes as you spoke it in one breath and then smiled gently. âI havenât seen my baby smile like that since he was a boy. I know heâs a grown up now and he does what grown ups do.â Your face flushed at the implication and you suddenly wondered if she had already figured this was happening. âI think youâd do him some good.âÂ
You werenât sure how to respond to her kind words and you stayed quiet and stiff on the stool.
The floorboard creaking made you turn back to the doorway and you froze even more when you saw Jungkook standing there, his expression alerting you to the fact he had been there longer than you had realized and most likely eavesdropping.Â
âHi.â You instinctively breathed out when you noticed him, ridiculously handsome in the early morning.Â
He cleared his throat and entered the kitchen, giving his mother a soft kiss on the cheek as a greeting before placing his hands on the island and looking at you awkwardly. âHey.â
Nari suddenly decided she had something to do that involved her going out to the chicken coop but you didnât miss the instigating look she shot him over her shoulder as she left. You almost thought his cheeks were tinged pink as he quickly looked away from her and your lips curled upwards just enough for him to sigh.Â
âListen I-â
âDo you want to do something with me today?â He had cut you off and then froze like he hadnât even realized you were speaking.Â
Your eyes were a little wide as you stared at him, forgetting what you were even trying to tell him, most likely something that would give him the option to pretend the kiss had never happened but you liked his idea a lot better.Â
âSomething like.. other than chores?â You half teased as you reminded him that you did something with him almost every single day if farm work counted. He was nodding his head swiftly and going between avoiding looking at you directly and staring into your eyes intensely. âYes Jungkook, I would. That sounds very nice.â
He looked overly relieved that you had agreed and you began to really question his sanity if he actually thought you would reject him after what had happened.Â
Jungkook had instructed you that you would need a bathing suit and something comfortable to walk in, not leaving much to the imagination about what he wanted to do but leaving you excited regardless.Â
You almost asked him how he had gotten the two of you out of duties but you saw Nari carrying a small bag of hay as you stepped out onto the porch and realized quickly she must have agreed to help out today.Â
She was giving you a soft look and you returned it with a small smile and a wave goodbye, hearing the hinges creak behind you as he made his way out of the house and paused next to you to look at his mom as she disappeared back to the nearest barn.
âReady?â He said softly and you nodded your head at him, glancing to the side and feeling glad to see him smiling subtly.Â
The new development between you did not change the fact Jungkook didnât talk much but it did mean he let you be the one to shuffle through his CD collection until you found something you liked. He actually had a few things you managed to recognize and you put in the back of your mind to request a mixtape of his favorite tracks.Â
You preferred the windows down and wind blowing to the cold and sterile AC of your car back in the city, hair in your face and the now familiar scents that the warm air danced through the old truck being things you had grown used to faster than your usual that you had simply tolerated for two decades.Â
He was tapping the steering wheel to the music and your eyes scanned over him briefly now that he was distracted.Â
He had abandoned his button up flannels for the day in place of a loose shirt that was tucked into his jeans and belt in random places, showcasing his large belt buckle that you had started to think was his signature.Â
Clearly you were obvious enough that he caught on to the feeling of you staring because he was sending you a sideways glance that made you laugh. Most guys would probably smirk cockily if they noticed you checking them out like that but Jungkook was certainly not most guys, quickly facing forward again and swallowing hard.
You watched from the side mirror as dust kicked up nearly to your window, feeling him shift gears as he pulled off onto the side of the dirt road.Â
There was nothing special about the area he stopped at, a simple stretch of road with trees canopy over the top and giving you a nice break from the sun. You looked at him, curious why he was stopping.Â
âCmon.â He said and his eyes flashed with something bright before he was getting out of the driver's side and gesturing for you to slide across the bench seat of the truck so you could come out his door.Â
His hand was reaching out to grab yours, helping you out smoothly and the act made it so you were standing almost as close as you were the night before. He took a few seconds to let his eyes dart over your face before he was stepping back and keeping his hand over yours.Â
âItâs through here.â He breathed and you nodded, letting him gently guide you through the trees and brush.Â
You could see a faint desired path, dirt in place of grass where people had been stepping and venturing off from the road like you were now.Â
Luckily it wasnât a long walk considering you were not exactly accustomed enough to the outdoor life to enjoy branches in your face but you were glad you had heeded his warning about comfortable shoes.Â
You felt his hand squeezing yours as he slowed his pace, leaving you almost stumbling into his back from your lack of paying attention.Â
He glanced back at you as you came to a stop beside him, hands wrapping around his arm similarly to the way you had held him at the market. He stepped to the side more so you could see what he was bringing you towards and your mouth parted.Â
The quarry was only a little bigger than a pond, surrounded on all sides by trees and tall rock walls that glistened from the water splashed on them by the numerous small waterfalls in various places alongside it.Â
The water was a beautiful blue-green shade that looked especially inviting given the heat today and there was a small slope that led to a patch of sand, sporadic bushes of flowers and long hanging vines decorating the empty spaces.Â
âWow.â You breathed out as you stepped out of the tree line, walking along the top of the quarry until you could shuffle your way down the slope towards the beach.Â
Jungkook stayed right behind you, silent and squeezing your hand every so often whenever the path got a bit steep. You were grateful considering how little focus you had now that you were presented with such a beautiful sight.Â
âDo you like it?â He was asking softly when you made it to the waterline, the area even more breathtaking from down below. Your eyes scanned over the quarry walls around you now and you almost felt emotional.Â
Youâd never seen anything even remotely similar to this and it was overwhelming you a little bit. It was like an oasis hidden just off the dirty road, untouched by civilization and nurtured by the elements around you.Â
âItâs amazing.â You turned to face him and he looked pleased that you were excited, biting the inside of his cheek and nodding as he took off his hat and placed it on a nearby log.Â
Your eyebrows raised in question before he was shifting backwards and kicking off his boots, a laugh of disbelief leaving you in a single breath.Â
The girlish giggle was leaving you before you could stop it and you didnât care enough to feel embarrassed about the sound, hurriedly removing your easiest layers before pulling your dress over your head and leaving you in your bathing suit.Â
When you emerged from the lacy fabric you were greeted by a shirtless Jungkook and you fully froze, eyes locking on his chest and the full expanse of his tattooed sleeve that youâd been catching glimpses of whenever he wore a shirt.Â
You already knew he was strong, easily detectable by his stamina and how much he could move and carry without breaking a sweat. Plus the telling veins lining his forearms that pulses whenever he shifted or gripped something.Â
None of these small tidbits couldâve prepared you for the sight of Jeon Jungkook shirtless and you couldnât even bother to disguise how intensely you were staring at his toned chest and the happy trail wedged between hard ab muscles.Â
Jungkook seemed to not even notice the way you were looking at him but that probably had something to do with the fact he was staring at you the same exact way, hair messy from removing your dress that now sat at your feet.Â
You imagined at another time it couldâve been heated but instead it was bashful, almost shy as you both came to reality and looked away in sync. Your cheeks felt warm again and you squinted up at the burning sun like it was the cause and not the pull in your stomach.Â
It was easier to run towards the water than face him again and he seemed to agree considering you could hear the sound of him entering right behind you.Â
The two of you splashed and played for nearly an hour, throwing handfuls of water and filling the echoing quarry with your shrieks and laughter as you did so. Your stomach was aching from how hard you were laughing and your cheeks felt even worse, in the best way possible.Â
Youâd even begun to wonder if you had ever actually smiled before this exact moment, the happiness rushing through you feeling so foreign. You were completely detached from yourself.Â
The wealth of your family name, the cold expressions you both faced daily and learned to force onto yourself and even the heaviness of the city air and its routine were all fading from your mind. Right now you were simply a girl having fun in a beautiful place with a boy that liked you enough to free his day and show it to you.Â
Jungkook was either thinking similarly or simply recognizing your melancholy because the play splashing faded into the two of you slowly inching closer and closer in the water until your arms were looped around his neck and his settled warmly on your waist.Â
Your eyes were scanning over the parts of his chest that were not under the hazy water, cold fingers lightly tracing over the scars and marks littering his tan skin.
He was simply watching you, eyes on your face and only shifting away briefly whenever you made eye contact.Â
âWhere'd you get this one?â Your voice was a whisper and it felt like the first time youâd talked in a while, smoothing over a particularly large mark spanning across his left collarbone all the way to his shoulder.Â
âGot bucked off Lucky when I was fourteen.â He said in a low voice, referencing the large horse youâd taken into town together. âLanded wrong on the wired fence.â
You nodded softly as he recounted the story, feeling a deeper warmth when you thought about teenage Jungkook and his mishaps as he grew into the practiced country man he was now. His hands squeezed your waist as your hand crept up to his cheek and you shifted closer.
âThis one?â Your tone was more hesitant when you saw the look on his face at the touch, already knowing heâd be explaining that especially deep mark next.Â
âI was seventeen.â He started off slowly and you watched him, hand moving to cup his cheek and obscure the scar from your vision. His face instinctively pushed against your palm and he sighed. âAccidentally tipped a barrel of feed we were transporting to the neighbors. My dad sent me flying into the wall and I guess there was an old nail or something.âÂ
It was the first time he had outwardly voiced what you already assumed and although you knew, it didnât make it any easier to hear him say it.
âHas he always done that?â You whispered and he shook his head.Â
âJust when I became a teenager.â He said simply, like it wasn't a big deal to him. It probably wasnât anymore and you couldn't help but frown softly, feeling worse when his eyes flashed with concern. âHappens less now.â
Another thing you didnât need to hear out loud to understand. Jungkook was bigger now, stronger and harder to push around even if he allowed it up to a certain point. You had a feeling that he'd never lay a hand on his father to test the theory but you had full confidence he could lay him out if needed and you imagined Minchul had realized something similar.
You felt the words leave you, not exactly sure if that was what he needed anyways. There was nothing you could say that would make it stop and you figured he had thought of any reassuring phrases you wouldâve come up with anyways.
There was only one thing that made sense to you and you hoped it was the right choice when you kissed him softly.Â
It was so gentle he barely felt it and then you were pulling back and pressing your forehead against his. His gaze was softer now and you could feel the wet droplets from his hair on your skin, his large hand leaving your hip underwater to hold your face and bring you into him again.Â
This time there was some heat behind the action, mouths moving together as you wrapped your legs around his middle to be as close as possible.Â
Jungkook kissed you deeply, a low noise sounding from his chest when you were tugging softly at his lower lip. It felt like a habit to tangle your tongue with his and you sighed against his mouth, one hand on his jaw with the other resting on his chest as he held you weightlessly in the water.Â
âHave I mentioned youâre a good kisser?â You breathed against his mouth and he made a low noise, used to your antics and teasing comments by now. His hands were under your thighs to keep you supported around his waist and you sighed as you fell back into a kiss.Â
It felt utterly ridiculous, disbelief still clouding your mind when you felt the butterflies in your stomach and the way your skin felt tingly wherever his hands traced. You had barely felt anything before you got here and suddenly your days were full of satisfying muscle aches and electric glances across the room with a boy who was holding you like he actually managed to care about you.Â
You felt like a fool for putting so much weight behind kissing him, behind being somewhere he considered special and laughing like little kids together.Â
âI am so happy you are here.â
All of your concerns faded away when he whispered the words against your lips, unable to keep kissing him but loving the way he pecked your mouth a few times before realizing you werenât responding anymore and looking at you heavily.Â
Maybe he could tell it was something you needed to hear because one of his hands left your leg in favor of pushing your wet hair behind your ear, thumb tracing over your swollen lips.Â
âYou mean that?â You accidentally whispered it and that felt much more vulnerable than you had meant it to come across, not able to stop yourself from seeking confirmation. Youâd spent your entire life feeling like you were taking up space, a ghost in crowded conference halls and an investment only worthy of funding.Â
Jungkook had nothing to take from you, you had nothing to offer him here in this new version of you that you had barely begun to understand yourself and yet his eyes were soft and genuine as he nodded.Â
âI was just going through the motions before you.â He responded right when you needed to hear it most and the rare show of vocalized honesty from him hit harder. You could tell it was difficult for him to say these things out loud without feeling insecure and you appreciated it even more.Â
You kissed him eagerly and barely processed the way he was standing out of the water and easily carrying you to the shore, only recognizing your new location when your back touched the warm sand and you gasped softly.
It was swallowed by his mouth as he placed himself over you, holding his weight up with his left arm so he wasnât exactly pressing against you. He felt even better in this position and your hands tangled in his hair, pulling him down and keeping his mouth moving with yours like it was the only way you could function.
You werenât sure how long you stayed there like that, going between kissing heavily and whispering sweet words to each other that made your chest tighten so much it felt like it was going to explode.
The sun had started to set and you felt slightly chilled in your damp suit, flushing when he noticed your shiver and silently moved to help pull your dress back over your head. He stood from the sand, offering a hand to lift you up and steadying you before finding his discarded shirt.Â
It was silent on the way back to the farm but welcomed. You had abandoned the passenger seat in favor of sitting in the middle, laying your head on his shoulder and smiling every time his hand moved from the gear stick to rest on your bare knee.Â
He had his left arm out the window as he tapped the top of it occasionally along to the music but he quickly withdrew it when you pulled in the long driveway and saw the porch light still on. It was dark by now but not quite late enough to cause any suspicion, sky a dark blue as the sun fully set.Â
You were glad you had enough sense to scoot back into your seat because you passed the scattered trees and could now clearly see Minchul stood on the porch, not at all trying to pretend he wasnât waiting for you.
Jungkook was tense and his face was dark in a way that pulled a pout onto your face, hoping you didnât have a sour end to such a beautiful day.
He sighed as he parked the truck and you reached your hand over to grab his, his eyes darting to you quickly like he had forgotten you were sitting there with him. You watched as his shoulders dropped as they lost their tension and he gave you a soft smile and squeezed your hand in his.Â
You were both exiting the truck and you gave Minchul a small wave, only slightly surprised that he didnât return it. He was still keeping up the charming and friendly persona with you but clearly it didnât matter when his hard gaze was locked on his son.Â
âHow were the Johnsons?â He said lowly and you knew better than to respond or showcase any confusion on your face even though you had no idea what he was talking about.Â
âThe Johnsons?â Jungkookâs voice was casual as he walked, barely faltering at the question and not even glancing at his dad as he stepped onto the porch. You stayed on the yard and watched them, breath held as it almost seemed like they were sizing each other up. You werenât used to seeing any defiance from Jungkook and it worried you. âWe were at the Leeâs. Mary said hello.â
He went inside, sending you a glance as he did and you stood there silently.
Minchul scoffed and you saw his jaw clench in annoyance, clearly wanting to test Jungkook and catch him in a lie. Nari and him must have come up with a cover story beforehand about where you two were the entire day, something you stupidly hadnât even considered.Â
His gaze fell on you and while it wasnât as icy, it still didnât look thrilled to see you. You were glad you had become so accustomed to having a flat expression because the last thing you wanted was to be the one who fucked it up and got the both of you in trouble.
âThank you for letting us have some time off.â You said softly, tone as polite as you could manage and he stayed very still for a few more seconds before giving you a small smile and nodding. You stayed there as he turned to head inside, finally letting out the breath you were holding.
----
It was difficult to know Jungkook was so close yet also understanding spending unnecessary time with him could get you in trouble potentially. You knew you were both adults but it was his fathers house and clearly he didnât have sound reasoning for his hatred towards Jungkook.
As much as you wanted to lounge in his room with him and listen to music, you settled for opening your door and letting it float down the hallway towards you as you journaled.
You were back to chores the next morning like normal and you couldnât help the shy smile on your face when you saw him in the kitchen. He returned it and you felt his foot nudge against yours when you slid onto the stool beside him, side eyeing him playfully as Nari brought you both a plate of breakfast.
There was a welcomed silence as you ate rather quickly and then you were both slipping out of the house, soft giggles escaping you at the fast way he walked towards the barn. He glanced behind you towards the house and must've determined the coast was clear because he was scooping you off of your feet to get you there quicker.
âYouâre insane.â You laughed and slapped against his shoulder as he bridal style carried you into the barn, rounding the corner and setting you down when you were out of sight.Â
âIs that a bad thing?â His eyebrow went up and you narrowed your eyes jokingly, a bright smile on your face as you stared up at him. âMaybe I just missed you.â
You still werenât used to the quiet boy you had grown accustomed to being able to say the most devastating things like he didnât even realize what they did to you. You sucked in a breath at the statement and it wasnât long before he was kissing you again.
There seemed to be a mutual addiction to the action now that youâd done it a few times and you were glad you werenât alone in that, not sure what you would do if he wasnât so willing to kiss you all the time.Â
Kissing you didnât seem to be the only thing on Jungkookâs mind because it wasnât long before he had you laid back against a blanket over the hay, making you half wonder if he planned this or if it was just a spontaneous decision. Either way you appreciated the gesture, not sure you could enjoy the way he was kissing down your neck as much if you had scratchy grass poking you back.
âJungkook.â You gasped his name out when his teeth brushed over your collarbone and his back hardened at the sound for a second before he was humming, low and sensual as he questioned the reason for your call. âMore.â
He picked his head up long enough to look into your eyes, scanning over your face with a dark expression you hadnât quite seen from him. It was similar to the way he looked when he was particularly focused on a hard task but there was something deeper there and you suddenly felt flustered.Â
âTell me what you want.â It was a soft instruction that subtly reminded you he didnât really know what he was doing.
âAnything, justâŠâ Your hands were in his hair and you kissed him softly as you tried to collect yourself, distracted by the way he was looking at you and the weight of his body on top of yours. âJust you. I just want you.â
That seemed to be enough for him to forget his inexperienced based hesitance because his mouth was back on yours, sloppy and hot in a way that made a shiver go down your spine. His hands moved under your dress, pushing it up so it sat under your ribs and exposed your lower half.
He went back to kissing down your neck and this time he didnât stop at your dress, skipping your covered section and shifting his body further down so he could have his mouth on your stomach. You sucked in a gasp at the sensation, keeping your hands in his hair to keep yourself grounded under the illusion of some control.
It was a world changing sight to see him down between your legs like that, eyes darting from your lace panties back up to your face to make sure you were feeling okay. You imagined he was being met with a very eager expression on your face, nearly pleading as you took in his messy hair and doe eyes.Â
The first press of his lips alongside your inner thigh was almost enough to ruin your life and you whined softly, shifting your knees further apart so he had no issue getting where he needed.Â
âQuiet down princess.â The already low drawl of his voice had taken an even deeper tone and you shook your head, squeezing your eyes shut like you were pained at the idea of silence. âFuck, youâre so beautiful baby.â
He had no idea the way he was wrecking you with the pet names, made even more clear by the way his mouth was on your core through the thin wet fabric of your underwear. Your hips bucked as you made a strangled sound and his hand was shooting up to hold you down, pressing against your stomach and kissing his teeth at you like you were an animal he was trying to settle.Â
The instinctive way he attempted to tame you made your head spin, not even realizing how sexy you would find that until he did it.Â
âJungkook.â You were breathing again and shifting your hips upwards, heat surging through you when you realized you werenât even able to move under his strong hold. He was easily pressing you against the blanket with one hand and one of yours moved from his hair to pull at the waistband of your panties.
He didnât need you to explain that to him, hurriedly sitting up enough that he could pull them down your thighs and grunting a little when you kicked them away, settling back between your legs and taking a deep breath at the sight of you bare.
âPlease.â You pleaded and he looked back up at you.
âYou want it baby?â He said lowly, a whole new persona to him you hadnât even begun to fantasize about and you nodded eagerly, eyes a little glassy. âWant me to taste you?â
You made another high pitched impatient sound and he laughed a little, breath hitting your wet folds making your body tighten for a second.Â
He was finally done teasing you and you knew you wouldnât be able to keep quiet like he requested as soon as his mouth was on you, hands moving to your knees to keep your legs from clamping around his head as he licked against you.Â
âOh fuck.â You whined and he closed his eyes at the taste of you, tongue slow and testing as he explored what areas brought the biggest reaction out from your lips. He was clearly a good kisser in more than one way because you felt like you were going to pass out just from the way his mouth moved, getting more eager the more comfortable he got.Â
Your hips rocked forward against his face as much as his grip allowed, searching for friction and finding it when his nose brushed against your sensitive clit. His mouth quickly followed, tongue working your bud and bringing noises out of you that you didnât even know you were capable of.
âFeels so good.â You mewled and he groaned against you, sending another wave of pleasure and longing through you.Â
âItâs good princess?â He was breathing heavier from the lack of oxygen considering he hadnât taken his mouth off of you since he got down there and you almost laughed at the sound of it. You werenât sure if he was dirty talking or genuinely looking for reassurance but you nodded eagerly regardless, hands tangling back in his hair and pressing his face back between your legs.Â
âMake me cum.â You said the order softly, more of a plea than anything and he took it easily, practically making out with your cunt in his desperation to give you what you wanted. Jungkook was clearly a pleaser and you found it even more stupid nobody had jumped his bones yet, although a possessive flare surging through you every time you remembered you were his first.Â
You did a terrible job keeping quiet as he ate you out and you figured the rough way he was squeezing your thighs was meant to be reminders but you ignored him in favor of rolling your hips along with his mouth, biting your lip to keep from outwardly screaming when you realized you were about to cum.
Your grip in his hair tightened almost painfully and your breathing picked up, chest rising and falling in heavy pants as you got closer. Luckily Jungkook knew enough to not stop, pressing his tongue against your hole with his nose nudging your clit and bringing you to release so suddenly you felt dizzy.
âWhat the fuck?â You felt almost startled by how fast and intensely he made you finish and he slowed down, eyeing you curiously and almost looking like he was smiling. He kissed your thighs a few more times softly before he was coming back up on top of you.
You moaned when he was kissing you out of nowhere, not even slightly disgusted at the idea of tasting yourself and instead eagerly licking into his mouth.
âWait.â You gasped into it and he barely slowed, only pausing to kiss the corners of your lips and let you speak. âWhat about you?â
Your hand was inching between your bodies to feel his hard length but you faltered when you felt the wet patch on his pants instead. His body tensed on top of yours and your eyes went back to his face, taking in his embarrassed expression and feeling a million different types of warmth rushing through you suddenly.Â
âFuck.â He said in one breath, eyes shutting tight for a second like he was willing himself to disappear.Â
âThat might be the hottest thing that has ever happened to me.â You said far too loud for the quiet barn and he looked at you like you were crazy, eyebrows furrowed and cheeks turning pink when he processed the dazed out look returning to your face. âYou came in your pants from eating me out? Are you even real?â
He was frozen for a long few seconds with that same expression before he was pushing out a singular disbelieving laugh and resting his head on your shoulder. You giggled as he groaned into your hot skin, hand coming back up to his hair to pet it gently this time.
You didnât move for a bit, kissing softly until the heat was beginning to feel too intense now that you didnât have a mind numbing distraction.Â
âWe have to do our chores.â You whispered against his lips and he sighed softly, knowing you were right.Â
He was gentle as he helped you stand up, sitting you back on a wood slate so he could pull your underwear backup and adjust your dress. His hands were smoothing through your hair to help control it, picking loose pieces of grass and straw as you watched his face.Â
The barn was quiet as you reached up to cup his face, pulling him in for another kiss and sighing softly when you felt him smiling.Â
âWhat are you doing to me?â You almost groaned as he pulled away again, tugging you off of the wood so you were standing in front of him. You were close enough for your chest to press together and you craned your neck to look up at him.Â
âItâs mutual.â He responded easily and you felt like you were really going crazy.Â
Luckily he had more sense than you and was backing up a few feet to pop the tension filled bubble and help keep you focused. It was almost impossible to watch him do chores now that you knew what was hidden under his shirt, and became familiar with those grunts in a different context.Â
You worked through the day together and kept your shy smiles and loaded glances to as much of a minimum as you could manage.Â
Supper was much more pleasant today and you felt like things were starting to really flow nicely around here, your heart feeling content as you and Nari joked around over the meal and the men listened with fond smiles. Â
Your gaze went to Jungkook for the hundredth time today and you found him already watching you, eyes bright and a smile on his face that you usually didnât see at dinner time. He must have felt similarly to you about how good the day was because he didnât look away, holding your eyes affectionately.Â
When you finally blushed and looked away, your line of sight landed on Minchuk and you froze.Â
He was staring at you with an expression of understanding, like he had just figured something out. His jaw tensed as he looked towards Jungkook and you felt red hot fear in your chest.Â
Jungkook had started conversing calmly with his mother and didnât seem to notice the expression on either of your faces.Â
It wasnât until your time to do the dishes that you even dared to look at him again, breathing a sigh of relief when he sunk against you for a hug.Â
You wrapped your arms tightly around him, stretching on your tiptoes and burying your face in his neck as he circled his against your lower back. The fact it was overly sappy didnât miss you but you couldnât really care anymore, longing to be near him after any amount of time.Â
âI feel crazy.â His voice was slightly muffled by your hair and you smiled at the sound of it and the warm tone he only seemed to take when he spoke to you. âHow did I miss you so bad when you are right here?â
You shake your head, not trusting yourself to speak without saying something even more ridiculous but he hopes he knows what you mean, what you want to shout into the quiet kitchen.Â
No, you aren't crazy. No you're not the only one feeling like this. No you don't understand it either.Â
You only see a glimpse of his eyes before you are kissing and you canât even remember who started it, if you went on your tiptoes or if he bent down to your level to catch you in something so feverish it felt like you had gone a year apart. There was no way of knowing who backed your bodies up against the counter, whose hands explored the other's frame first and who decided completely abandoning the dishes was somehow a good idea.
The only thing you could pinpoint was the exact moment it ended and he was suddenly ripped from you in a way that was so jarring you felt your knees go weak like you were going to collapse without him.
It took you a few seconds to track his body, stumbled across the kitchen like he had gotten thrown. The icy expression on his face made you realize he had been, your eyes darting to Minchul standing only a few feet away with his chest puffed and his eyebrows pulled together in a way that made your mouth part in shock.
âWhat the hell do you think you are doing boy?â His voice was venomous and he made another move in Jungkookâs direction that had you covering your mouth, lips still wet from kissing him.Â
Jungkook didnât move a muscle, not even slightly flinching or faltering his hardened expression. You wanted to shout at him that now was not the time to challenge his father, not after such a good day and certainly not over you. The look on his face told you that there was no point in trying to diffuse the situation, his shoulders squaring as he shifted his body defensively.Â
âOh.â Minchul looked genuinely surprised under all the rage until a bitter laugh slipped out as he stared at Jungkook mockingly. âYouâre tough ain't you. A real man now?â
âMinchul.â You said slowly, taking a step away from the counter and trying to put yourself in their peripheral vision. You had a light amount of hope that seeing you in the room might be enough to humble the angry man and also calm Jungkook down enough to at least hold this off. You had wondered if you should call out for Nari but you decided against it. âWe.. we were just-â
âI know what you were doing.â He spat as he turned to look at you and the way he stared at you stole all of the hope from underneath you. It was the exact same way he looked at Jungkook and you knew that any effort he was putting into faking a charming persona was no longer applied to you.Â
âWatch it.â Jungkook was speaking for the first time and both of you snapped your gazes over to him.
His voice had never sounded like that and you felt a wave of fear run over you, not towards him necessarily but towards the outcome that would be caused by this level of anger coming from both of them. He clearly had no intention of pushing away his feelings and fauxing respect to get his dad off of his back, combative and aggressive now that you were being spoken down to.Â
âY/N.â Minchul was speaking calm and slow but the way his glare never left Jungkookâs taut frame sent a shiver down your spine and your eyes widened. âGo outside honey.â
âI-â You went to object but he sent you another look that left no room for argument and you turned desperately to Jungkook. He was clenching his jaw and looking pained as he finally looked at you just long enough to give you a confirming nod. His face barely softened but it was noticeable to you, a silent act of reassurance that he would be okay.
You felt beneath yourself as you stumbled outside, not really sure what else to do with your body once you got out there. You got the strange urge to call your father even though he would never help you, even to call your mother who had been dead for most of your life.
Your brain was just searching desperately for solutions and even more so when you heard crashing from inside the house, tears springing to your eyes as you took a few more shaky steps away to try and put some distance between you and the grunts of anger and pain.
The sensible part of your brain noticed a light switching on upstairs as the volume increased, realizing Nari must have woken up and would most likely be rushing down to the kitchen and putting a stop to whatever was happening.Â
It was a power you clearly did not have and you felt so overwhelmingly useless.
You felt like you were outside for hours alone like that even though it was only a few breathless minutes before Jungkook was coming outside. He was walking fast and storming right past you, similarly to the way he had been the other week when Minchul brought out the belt on the porch.
âJungkook.â You called out to him and your hands reached for his arm, heart clenching when you made brief contact before they were slipping off as he refused to stop. You started to chase after him without really thinking about it, needing to speak to him before you exploded. âWait please.â
He whipped around at the crack in your voice and you faltered when you saw the blood on his lip and redness surrounding his eye and cheek. You were sure there were more marks youâd be able to pinpoint tomorrow and you were suddenly grateful for the moon lighting him up.Â
Your hands were coming up to cup his face instinctively as a wounded noise left you and he winced at the feeling of your hands on his injuries. Your mouth was opening and closing as you searched for the words to say, head shaking as you felt like you were about to cry or throw up or both.Â
âDid you know?â His voice was hoarse and your eyebrows automatically furrowed in confusion. It was asked softly but he scoffed at your expression and repeated it in a much harsher tone.Â
âKnow what?â You almost begged, wanting so badly to understand him and be able to help in some way. You took a step closer and he looked pained by the action, your stomach turning at the way he avoided looking directly at you. âDid I know what Jungkook? What happened?â
He was quiet for a long time and you felt like the dirt underneath you was slipping away and finally waking you up from this dream youâd been living in. You half wanted to sink with it and wake up in your warm bed worlds away from here with vague visions of a beautiful cowboy and the other half was clawing at the collapsing ground and pleading for the dirt under your nails to stay until morning.Â
âYour dad owns the farm.â He said it so simply like it didnât take the air out of your lungs and you shook your head, both in denial and confusion on what he was saying. His eyes were cold as he stared at you like he wasnât sure if you were the enemy or not anymore. âHe owns everything. You own everything.â
He emphasized the pronoun like he was trying to make it really clear to you that you played some type of role in this situation and you shifted away from him.
It suddenly made so much more sense to you, the way Minchul and your father interacted like they were forced to and the memories of coming here as a child feeling so foreign and locked away. How kind the Jeonâs had been to you and the pure fury towards you and Jungkook for getting involved, it was all a result of your father placing his polished shoe on another aspect of your life.Â
This time it wasnât an apartment back in the city or your daily schedule, not even your name on the important document that locked you into the family business for life if anything tragic happened to him. Your father had managed to put his greedy hands on something you had deemed untouchable.
Jungkook had created a world for you that didnât allow the bad stuff to exist, that blocked out every memory you had that was grey and cold. He had brought the sun to you and now you were learning your father had already staked his flag on its surface.Â
âWhat are you talking about?â You didnât know what else to say and you could feel hot tears on your flamed cheeks now. You had never felt adrenaline like that, pure emotion and panic as your chest started to rise and fall quickly.Â
Jungkook was quiet as he watched you like he was conflicted about what to do. Once a particularly rough breath ran through your body he was softening his shoulders and gaze simultaneously, pulling you against his frame as you wracked with a heavy sob.Â
You hadnât had a panic attack in years, since you were a teenager who could barely stand the sight of a crowded crosswalk or a presentation. There was no doubt in your mind that you would not be able to get out of the strong grip of it easily on your own and you sunk against him.Â
âIâm sorry.â He breathed and you pushed your face into his chest, muffling the strangled noise that left you. âOf course you didnât know. I know you didnât know.â
âI want to go home.â Is what you eventually breathed out even though you realized as soon as you said it that you werenât sure what you were referring to. The thought of your apartment was only comforting until you remembered he didnât even exist there and you sunk lower against him.
âWe can go there.â He said back hurriedly like he had already considered that as an option. You felt terrible for not being in the state to talk to him properly, to ask him if he was okay and if he could face his father again. âIâll take you, we can go home.â
You werenât sure he knew what that meant to you but he was gently lowering you on the stairs and going back inside before you could tell him. His back was tense and you had half a mind to yell out for him to come back, to not go in and to stay with you where you could pretend you could keep him safe.
Instead of sitting there and feeling useless, you stood to your feet and chased after him.
He was already on his way back out and you bumped into each other, a startled sound leaving him as his hands reached out to grab your arms and steady you. You were still breathing heavily and now confused by how quickly he had returned, eyes going over his wide shoulders.
Nari was standing in the middle of the kitchen with a dim look on her face, stealing her of her usual warmth and soft glow. Minchul was nowhere to be seen but you could tell by the damage to the room that it had been a full blown scuffle between the two of them.Â
You felt devastated for her, knowing how much love and pride she held for her kitchen and the things she created. There were shattered plates and disarrayed decorations, a large hole in the wall that you had a bad feeling was created by Jungkookâs back. She met your eyes over his frame and you felt relief when she softened slightly at the sight of your swollen eyes and remorseful stare.
âGo on, honey.â She said in a voice so gentle it broke your heart, Jungkookâs hands tightening on your arms at the sound of it. âIâll be alright here.â
He was shifting and you could hear the sound of the keys in his fingers now, only just feeling the cold metal pressing against your skin. You nodded swiftly at her and gave her one more heavy look that you hoped she would understand despite your lack of words, her smile in return making you believe she had.
Jungkook and you were quick to leave the house and you felt another sob go through you when he spared one last look towards the barn where Lucky and the other horses were most likely asleep for the night, knowing there was no certain timeline he would be able to see them again any time soon.Â
He was opening the passenger door for you and making a soft noise with his teeth to get your attention through your devastation, closing it softly once you were sitting on the bench seat.Â
You waited until he was sat and finished taking a few deep breaths, until you were squealing out of the driveway and pretending the light wasn't still on upstairs. Only after you were on the dirt road and heading towards uncertainty did you scoot over into the middle seat.Â
This time around you werenât damp from the quarry water and your cheeks were not sore from smiling so hard you felt euphoric. There were no shy glances and no toeing the line between unlikely friends and something more. But there was the feeling of his hand wrapped around your knee like he was scared to forget you were there and the soft kisses you were laying on his bruised face as he drove.Â
Going back the same way you came but with your heart full of adoration and something much more real that you were too afraid to name just yet. You felt like your fantasy world was finally mixing into reality and the colors mixing with your cold gray was a lot less jarring knowing he was the one braving it all with you.Â
Jungkook released a soft breath when your head landed on his shoulder and you felt the weight of it all go with it.

BETTER THAN I KNOW MYSELF
PAIRING â© jungkook x reader
WC â© 13k
SUMMARY â© grappling with what it means to be helplessly inlove with your best friend
AUTHORS NOTE â© Been an army since 2014 and been writing jungkook for about that long too and this is my first time actually posting for him somehow. Hope you enjoy!
Most of your friendships didnât feel like such a frail connection, they didnât quite make you tiptoe around certain phrases and bite your tongue when you felt like you were saying too much of something consequential.Â
Albeit, most of your friendships were not with Jeon Jungkook.Â
That happened to be singular and one of a kind in a way that left you tossing and turning throughout the night and fixing your hair for a few extra heavy seconds before you left to meet up for a casual coffee.Â
You struggled with explaining how your friendship started to most people because you could almost feel the cliche surrounding your words and you felt their annoyed eyerolls they were keeping locked behind their polite nods and smiles. It naturally felt like you were bragging even when you werenât.
It was ideal to have met your closest friend so early on, never missing a single birthday party and forming your personalities side by side in a way that led to you being in perfect sync despite being such opposites in most ways.
You had friends you had met a decade ago that would still get jealous of the length and depth of your friendship with Jungkook and you always met their groans and sighs with a soft shrug and a helpless smile, genuinely helpless.
They didnât quite understand the hidden burden that came with having a connection so deep with somebody who was borderline perfect, the expectation and rituals that used to excite you now bringing you a heavy exhaustion.Â
Jungkook thrived off of being a social battery and he always had a dozen different clubs, activities, and performances for you attend through school and they only seemed to grow as he did. Now you were his partner for important dinners and weddings of mutual friends that hadnât talked to you in years but not Jungkook, never Jungkook, because no one could ever forget about him.
You had grown truly accustomed to being his side kick and blending into the background unnoticed otherwise but occasionally it got to you and tonight happened to be one of those nights.
Taehyung was celebrating his 27th birthday and this was a social event that you actually had not been dreading, considering how close you were personally to him. He was not just Jungkookâs friend that tolerated your presence and you actually felt emotional watching him blow out his candles and squeeze his eyes shut during an exaggerated wish.Â
âWhat did you wish for Tae?â Your voice was quiet when you found him half an hour after the cake had been cut and the drinks had been served, waiting for everyone to be tipsy and distracted before you made your own individual birthday greeting.Â
âIâm not 17 anymore Y/N and you canât trick me into saying it this time. We all know it doesnât come true if you do.â He had a tendency to lightly banter in a way you were envious of, always knowing what to say in rebuttal to teasing and jokes while you would freeze up and stutter through an awkward reply.Â
You had slid into the booth he was in the back corner of the diner you all frequented, otherwise empty except for a trio of older women at the counter who didnât at all look like they minded the way your group was scattered about and having various loud conversations.Â
âIf you canât tell me your wish can you atleast tell me why you are hiding over here at your own birthday party?â You raised an eyebrow and leaned onto your hand so you could watch him closely, less serious than your face might have showcased you as. âSome would say it is the event of the year.â
He laughed a little at your dramatic wording and serious tone before shaking his head and sipping his drink. âThose people would probably be geniuses.â You had expected him to banter with you over getting at all genuine but you still watched him silently in hopes he would say more. âJust grappling with the number on the cake a little.â
You understood what he was getting at as soon as he said and you nodded while you sighed and leaned back in the booth seat.Â
He was older than you by two years but turning 25 a few months ago had felt like somebody put a heavy ball and chain around your neck and threw it overboard the deck of a rickety boat, leaving you to fight the weight of it or fall over the side too.
Taehyung was a lively soul and while he had matured greatly in the last five years, he definitely still had a boyish energy to him that you always admired. He seemed almost embarrassed about it now and it made your stomach turn a little.
âSometimes I still wake up in a sweat thinking I forgot to study for an exam.â Your tone had gotten lighter to try and make him feel better while also letting him know you understood where he was coming from.
He glanced at you from the side of his eye and smiled the same smile heâd given you since you were teenagers, your heart warmed when he leaned his body over to bump his shoulder against yours and you knew the conversation was over before it ever really began.
His eyes left you in favor of scanning over your other friends from different walks of life all mingling and yours stayed on the same person your gaze was always on in a crowded room.
âThereâs one thing that hasnât changed.â His tone was teasing and you rolled your eyes although keeping them on Jungkook.Â
Taehyung was one of the only people that seemed to realize the way you felt about your best friend and suddenly you were glad he wasnât the type to get serious with people, not knowing what you would do if that information got to the wrong person.Â
You werenât exactly pining and losing your mind trying to wrestle with your feelings towards somebody who strictly saw you in a platonic way but it also was not simple. You had already spent years grieving any chance of a relationship with Jungkook and you were barely an adult when you accepted nothing would ever happen.
Now you were just stuck with a lifetime of affection stuffed into a locked part of your heart that rattled violently everytime he smiled at you or looked in your direction.Â
It was a good thing you were the more emotionally reserved one of the two of you because he rarely questioned the times you were short and cold with him in an attempt to save atleast a fraction of your broken heart.Â
Jungkook was, in your biased eyes, perfect.
And you didnât mean that in an unrealistic way that celebrated the fact he could do no wrong and he was the most pure soul to ever exist because that certainly wasnât the case but he was perfect to you. With all of his flaws and messy edges, you still couldnât find a single thing about him you disliked.
You saw beauty in his loud awkward laugh and his short temper and you had fallen inlove with the fact he was always a few minutes late to things and never seemed to have a matching pair of socks on.
It was almost more annoying because you were otherwise a pretty overly cynical person, quick to evaluate and judge in the most matter of fact way.Â
He must have felt two sets of eyes on him because suddenly he was looking in your direction and you felt that damned box start to rattle again. His already doe like gaze was widening even more and he broke into a boyish smile that almost made you outwardly sigh, charismatically excusing himself from the conversation he was having in favor of making his way over to you.Â
Taehyung silently slid out of the booth in a way that could only be meddling and you sent his back a glare.
âWhereâs he going?â Jungkookâs tone was soft when he finally reached you and he flopped down beside you, close enough that your sides were pressed together and you could smell theÂ
faint scent of alcohol rolling off of him.
âHe needed a smoke.â You had considered lying and saying he had diahrea just to get back at him for ditching you but you remembered your conversation about aging and decided against it.Â
Jungkook hummed in agreement like he figured it made sense and you hated how much more relaxed you felt now that you had him next to you. It wasnât necessarily stemming from the fact you were harboring feelings for the boy but moreso because he just felt like your other half, you better half according to you and most likely other people.
âAre you having a good time?â He was turning his head to be able to watch your face as you answered, a habit of his that he picked up around middle school when he realized you didnât care much for social events. âWe can head back whenever you want, Iâll walk you home.â
âIâll finish my drink and then we can say our goodbyes.â You took a hefty sip after answering, ignoring his first question in a way that let him know your mood anyways.Â
He didnât say anything for a few long seconds that caused you to raise an eyebrow and sit up a bit so you could turn to look at him without your faces being overly close, your face scrunching in confusion when you saw the ridiculous fond smile he was sporting now as he started to laugh at your casual response.Â
âWhat?â You glared at him playfully as he get chuckling and you put your drink down in favor or pushing against his chest. âWhat did I say wrong?â
âNothing, nothing.â He was raising his hands in mock surrender but laughing even harder, only stopping to catch his breath when an uncharacteristic pout formed on your face. You internally blamed the alcohol for causing it and he kissed his teeth in apology, cupping your cheek. âJust the way you said it was funny, Iâve never seen you so eager to ditch a party.â
You were back to rolling your eyes at him and pulling his hand away from your face but keeping your grip on his wrist for a few seconds even when it was back down in his lap. He kept the goofy smile on his face although more subtle now and you watched him for a few seconds that made you squirm awkwardly in your seat.
âSay bye for me?â You cleared your throat and moved to stand up as he nodded, knowing the drill.Â
It was alot easier for him to go and individually say the goodbyes, tagging your name onto the end as you slipped out of the door and went to wait for him.
You were pleased to find Taehyung had actually gone outside to smoke and you smiled at him, pulling him into a hug that was reserved for your closest friends and laughing into his shoulder when he started to sway your bodies back and forth.Â
âIâm glad you came, thanks for indulging me.â He kept you tightly in his grip as he spoke and you recognized a vulnerability in his voice that you didnât hear often.Â
Clearly this birthday was casting a certain type of melancholy over your friend and you squeezed him harder, rubbing up and down his shoulder blades in an almost maternal way.
âI will always attend your overly social birthday parties Tae.â You hoped you sounded as sincere as you felt despite your joking tone and luckily it seemed to work judging by the way he lightly lifted you up for a second before putting you back down and pulling out of the hug.
âInterrupting?â Jungkookâs voice was behind you and you turned to watch him approach with a raised eyebrow and a friendly smile as he pulled Taehyung into a similar embrace, wishing him happy birthday under his breath and patting his back roughly.
âAlways, I was just about to propose.â Taehyung was easily playing into his joke as he winked at you over Jungkookâs shoulder and you rolled your eyes even though you had a bright smile on your face, feeling suddenly struck by both fondness and the vodka you had in your cup.
Jungkook weirdly didnât reply to his flity comment and you almost found that funnier, watching the way he slightly stumbled away from the hug and realizing he might be a bit more buzzed than you had initially taken him for.Â
The two of you paid him one more sincere goodbye before you were turning away from the diner and starting your walk back to your apartment, only a handful of blocks away. You actually wished it was further, enjoying nothing more than a late night walk with Jungkook through the quiet city.Â
He seemed to be in his own head and you snuck your arm between his and his chest, forcing him to link elbows with you as you walked together. It wasnât unusual for you to be connected physically in some way or another especially late at night and a few drinks but you felt the box rattle again and almost regretted it.Â
You both stayed quiet for most of the walk but you didnât mind the silence, your social battery drained even though you didnât exactly count him as something that did that to you. He was the only person you could spend weeks straight with and not feel like you were crawling out of your skin, an exception in more ways than one.Â
âDo you think Taehyung has a crush on you?â His voice cutting through the night air felt sharp and disoriented and you almost stopped walking from the shock of his sudden question, pace faltering slightly as you looked up at the side of his face.Â
He kept his gaze locked on the sidewalk infront of you and you werenât sure if it was because he felt awkward or because he was drunk and had to apply extra effort into not tripping. Awkwardness was not a thing he typically seemed to experience so you hoped it was the latter and you were just applying your habit of overanaylzying useless tidbits of information.Â
âIs that a joke?â You know it wasnât but you certainly felt like it could be one considering how ridiculous it was. âDid he say something like that?â
âNo, well atleast not to me.â He emphasized the final word like it was more important and your head tilted in confusion. âJust thinking about the little comments he makes sometimes.â
You didnât disagree that Taehyung could come across as flirty but that was just his persona and how he was with most people, closeness and gender be damned. You were used to it and you knew Jungkook was too so you werenât sure where this thought process was stemming from.Â
âThatâs just Taehyung.â You shrugged your shoulders and felt his arm tense where it was intertwined with yours, like he had thought for a second you were pulling away and wanted to stop you.Â
Jungkook didnât respond and the silence now made you uncomfortable instead of the peaceful air it had held a few minutes ago. You didnât know if it was possible for him to be mad at you, something you really hadnât experienced much, but you wondered if this was what it looked like on his end of things.
âI mean maybe.. would that be so ridiculous?â You posed the question with a sincere want to know but a childish and selfish nudge was wondering if there was any part of him that would care. âSomeone like him having a crush on me?â
âSomeone like him?â He seemed almost offended at the way you had phrased it and you rolled your eyes at his tone, overbearing and protective like he had been in highschool whenever you got asked out by a boy.Â
âI just meant that heâs so extroverted.â You shrug again as you start to feel more awkward, never really discussing this topic with him.Â
The two of you had very little boundaries when it came to what you talked about between each other but you had never really gone out with somebody long enough to bring them up to him and you made a point of shutting down talks of the girls he hooked up with.
You played it off like you were disgusted at the idea of hearing about his girls to try and hide the fact your entire body felt like it was going to shrivel up and die whenever he brought somebody to a party or introduced you to one of his girlfriends that never lasted more than a month or two.
Jungkook was actually weirdly romantic for a guy who had only cared about sports and liquor growing up but for some reason he never could keep anybody around for long, although never seeming too upset when it eventually fizzled out.Â
Thankfully you were finally arriving to your apartment building and you watched as Jungkook typed in the code, leading you inside and silently informing you he planned to stay with you tonight. It was more often than not that he ended up at your place or vice versa so you didnât need direct confirmation to understand his line of thought.
âSure heâs well liked but so are you.â He broke the silence again and you outwardly groaned at the resurrection of the tired topic.
âI am hardly anything especially not well liked.â You rolled your eyes and you know he could see it even if you werenât looking at him, stepping into the elevator and holding the door open with your foot so he could step inside.Â
Youâd untangled your arms in favor of pressing the buttons required to get to your floor but Jungkook didnât seem to notice, standing close enough that your shoulder was against his bicep and you could feel every inhale he took.Â
âI hate when you say things like that.â He was mumbling under his breath but you heard it clear enough, stomach clenching as the rattling returned again.
You didnât respond to him, mostly because you didnât know what else to say about such a ridiculous topic and you felt a wave of relief when the elevator came to a shaky stop before releasing you into the familiar hallway.
He stood there silently, leaning against the wall on his side and watching you closely as you fumbled through your purse for your keys. You didnât need to look at him to know he had that soft smile on his face and a fond look in his eyes, taking a breath when you finally felt the metal on your fingertips.
It was a instant comfort to enter your apartment even though you had only left a few hours ago and you suddenly felt glad that he had come up with you, chest tightening preemptively at the reminder he would have to leave at some point.
Jungkook and you had lived together right after highschool, moving out of your small town half an hour away together and feeling the rush of the big city you had only taken daytrips to. He had sworn since he was thirteen and wearing thick eyeliner that he was meant for bigger things in bigger places and you had decided that following him around was better than staying behind alone.Â
Although you doubted he would have let you stay back in your home town anyways, a slight relief considering how ridiculous you felt when you occasionally remembered you had only moved for him.Â
Youâd felt all the emotions when you moved, the sadness of leaving behind a simple life that you had finally started to appreciate and the excitement of getting to start over somewhere with so much life and possibility.
There was finally a chance for you to be your own person, to fit into the mold in your own special way.Â
Then Jungkook had thrown a housewarming party and you listened to everybody all night congratulate him on his new place.
There was almost a chorus of praises on âhis furniture choicesâ, âhis choice of neighborhoodâ, even the gasp from an old highschool friend that struck a particular nerve âOh Jungkook what a beautiful place you haveâ.
You stood there in your living room, full of things you had brought from home and things you had spent hours thirfting while Jungkook trailed behind you looking bored, and watched yourself be erased from your new life before you even got a chance to appear in it.
Two years ago you had decided to move into your own separate places and your own internal battle was not on the list of reasons why, infact it was the hardest decision you had ever made. There was nothing easy about it for both of you but you found yourself becoming roomates instead of best friends and suddenly it was a chore to hang out and you stopped seeking eachother out for comfort, the constant presence almost exhausting.
The final straw came in the form of your office relocating a few blocks over and the few blocks made all the difference.Â
You had both spent the night with tears in your eyes, passing a bottle back and forth and cuddling on the couch as you recounted the best and worst times of your time in the shared space.
Jungkook had decided to renew his lease there individually and he stood there with a conflicted expression as you packed up the stuff you deemed yours. You had wondered if he even realized how much you left behind so he didnât feel like the space was suddenly empty but you knew that he had because Jungkook always noticed everything you did for him.
It had ended up being exactly what your friendship needed and you had grown closer together in the last two years than your entire lifetime of a friendship but sometimes you missed the unity that came with living together.
He had multiple drawers of clothes in your apartment and you still came over a handful of times a week to cook meals in his but there was a difference.Â
Like the way he was slightly lingering in your bedroom doorway like he wasnât sure he was supposed to come in just yet.
You gave him a look and a raised eyebrow as you sat on the edge of your bed and began to unlace your boots, the green light he needed to come in and flop down on your blankets like he owned them.Â
He was unusually silent as you stood up to go into your closest and change into something comfortable, bringing a pair of sweatpants and a hoodie to toss at him as you emerged. He was propped up on your pillows and eyeing you with a thoughtful look that made you sigh and cross your arms where you stood at the end of the bedframe.
âJust spit it out already.â Your tone was sharp because you could tell whatever he wanted to say wasnât going to be something you liked hearing but he smiled gently at the sound of it, not capable of being intimidated by your attitude.Â
âI donât think you should date Taehyung.â He said it in a rush like he knew youâd shut him down and you groaned loudly, grabbing a throw pillow and chucking it in his direction. âJust hear me out okay! I think it would be weird for the friend group.â
âThatâs ridiculous. Not that either of us are even considering dating but if we were, heâs my bestfiriend, how weird could that be?â You circled around to join him on the mattress and you almost frowned when you saw the look on his handsome face.
His eyebrows were furrowed in childish upset and his bottom lip was pouting subtly, just enough for your gaze to circle down to it.
âIâm your best friend.â He raised a hand like he was appalled at your wording and you spit out a laugh at the ridiculous of that interjection.Â
âYou know what I mean Jungkook. You have like a hundred best friends.â You leaned onto your side, propping your head up on your palm and yawning softly as you watched his expression morph again.
He was shaking his head and whatever styling gel he had in his hair for the party was long gone by now, leaving it fluffy and falling into his face whenever he moved. He was dramatically laying down in the same position as you so he could look intensely into your eye, his slightly wide while yours were crinkled in a silent laugh.
âI have a hundred people who think Iâm their best friend, you are my only actual best friend.â He sounded extremely serious about a very childish topic and you had to bite the inside of your cheek to keep from laughing in his face.
Jungkook was always baffled at the fact you did not realized just how cool you came across to people, even your closest friend groups.Â
He had made a very strong attempt at the mysterious and edgy guy thing in high school, only wearing dark clothes and spending an hour every morning on a single dash of eyeliner but he could not keep his mouth quiet to save his life and absolutely nobody who met him for more than a handful of seconds would consider him any type of mystery.
You had a naturally closed off demeanor but a strong sense of style and energy that he had never seen somebody even purposefully replicate, which made it even cooler than it just came naturally to you.
Most people at parties would ask him about you in an attempt to get closer but he knew better than to spill your business to anybody who asked and he also felt a little lucky that he got to know you so intimately.
The phrase âa guy like himâ had bugged him since you said it and now he figured you must have totally lost it to be calling Taehyung your best friend. Sure the guy had been around since high school and he definitely was alot closer to you than any average joe but he was still just Taehyung.
âYou can be such a sap sometimes.â You couldnât help the smile on your face and he matched it, pleased he had gotten such a reaction out of you especially since he could tell you were not enjoying his topic of conversation.Â
âOnly for you.â He shot you a cheesy wink and you rolled your eyes in hopes he would be too busy laughing to be able to hear the box rattling obnoxiously in your chest.Â
You were glad he didnât say anything else about it after that and you quickly pushed any thought of Taehyung and a potential crush to the very back of your mind. You didnât have time to think about any of that, not when you could barely stand to see the sight of your best friend and that annoyingly perfect twinkle in his eye.Â
You were rolling onto your back with an exaggerated groan that let him know you were too tired to keep up with the small talk, grateful that he had stayed for the company but not quite for the sake of entertainment.Â
Jungkook could read you like a book and he sat up so he could pull the lamp string and turn it off, throwing the covers over both of you and settling back against the pillows that, more often than not, smelled like his shampoo.Â
You could see the irony in the fact that you were hopelessly internally pining over the same man who slept in your bed like it was his own and treated you like you were his number one priority constantly but that was just Jungkook. You considered yourself lucky that you were the main source of his affection but he would treat a stranger like they were family and you knew he didnât think twice about pulling you against his chest and throwing his arm over you.
You let him get comfortable as you urged yourself to sleep, ignoring the persistent rattling.
-----
The sight of Jeon Jungkook in the morning was truly a dangerous thing for a heart as fragile as yours so you kept your eyes sharply on the mirror once you noticed him start to rustle around behind you in the reflection.
You had been awake for hours and already cleaned up the kitchen, showered and gotten ready by the time he began to stir. Your gaze was naturally drifting to the right as you saw his bed head perk up from the mess of blankets, eyes squinting like he was trying to remember where he was.Â
âWhy are you up so early?â His devastating morning voice was making your lips turn up just enough for you to feel foolish, shaking it off so you could continue with your mascara.Â
âItâs almost noon.â Your reply was flat and detached in a way that told him you were focused, interrupted by a groan from behind you as he stretched his arms above his head and tried to wake himself up more. âThereâs pain killers on your table.â
You stopped your precise movements so you could watch his expression morph with interest, leaning over to his assigned bedside table and quickly tossing the three small pills in his mouth to fight any possible sign of a hangover.Â
He had the same habit of taking off his shirt in the middle of the night since you were teens and it had bugged you as much then as it did now. You almost smacked against your heart to shut the rattling up but instead you took a deep breath and averted your gaze as he stood from the bed, finishing up your eye makeup and moving to put your hair up.Â
The magnet that seemed to always draw him to you was making it so he was slowly moving in your direction, stopping behind you and watching you in the mirror and you fiddled with a few stubborn pieces of hair.
âI like when you wear it like that.â His voice was gentle and nostalgic and you once again found yourself meeting his eyes in the reflection, bobby pin between your teeth as you affectionately furrowed your eyebrows.
You almost told him that you knew that and thatâs why you did it so you were thankful for the object keeping your mouth occupied at the moment and stopping you from admitting such a silly thing.Â
âWhere are you going?â He sounded half curious and half worried that he had potentially forgotten plans you had made together. He waited patiently as you tucked away a piece and took the pin out of your mouth, silently passing it to him as he gently took it and nudged it into the back of your updo.Â
âSome work thing with Taehyung.â You hoped he had mostly forgotten about the conversation from last night even though you knew he was not the type to forget and he was not even that drunk.Â
You locked eyes again and his hands froze in your hair like he was caught off guard and thinking of what to say. You stayed still, both so you didnât mess up your hard work and so he didnât lose his train of thought.Â
Eventually he was humming thoughtfully and his hands were moving again to tuck away pieces as he looked down. âAn artsy thing then?â
You were nodding your head even though you were not exactly sure what it was going to be. Taehyung was somewhat all over with his work as a freelance artist and it was only a few years ago that he started to make actual money from his paintings and sculptures, being noticed during one of his busking events by a woman who worked at a gallery.
It was honestly borderlining on lucrative so you felt a bit touched that he had invited you, possibly spurred on by your semi deep conversation the night before.Â
âWell I hope you have as much fun as you can without me around.â He was finishing up with your hair with a satisfied soft clap and you smiled at him in the mirror before turning around, thankful he had dropped the weird demeanor and returned to his usual goofy character.
You were gifting him a quick kiss goodbye on the cheek and a reminder to lock up before he left, grabbing your purse and heading out the door so you were not late.
The train ride to the gallery had activated the anxious butterflies in your stomach and you found yourself thinking more actively about the little things Jungkook did and the things he had been saying lately.
It was just beginning to drive you to insanity when you reached your stop and you were happily rushing out onto the platform and ascending the stairs out onto the noisy street, searching intersection signs and shop names as you looked for the unfamiliar place.
You werenât sure Taehyung had ever invited one of your friends to his place of work so you felt a bit bumptious at the ask, smiling to yourself when you finally saw the fancy sign above the building with large windows.
Your friend put his cigarette out against the brick as soon as he saw you and you were beyond grateful he had waited outside for you, knowing it would have taken alot for you to walk in on your own and actively look for him.
âYou look perfect.â His compliment was genuine in a way that made you want to do a twirl just to show off and you grinned brightly at him, turning your face in acceptance as he went to kiss both of your cheeks in a uniquely Taehyung way.
âI wasnât sure what to wear, Iâve never been to an art show.â Your voice was soft as you nervously glanced at the building, realizing now how many people were scattered around inside.
âThere isnât a dress code but if there was then you would have nailed it.â He had a hand on your back as he moved you both inside and you were a bit fascinated by this professional side of him, much more intense and pointed than you were used to from your childish friend.
There was no surprise that you had a pleasant time considering the mix of good company and atmosphere. You fully understood the appeal to this type of setting after an hour of quiet conversations and halfway awkward greetings from people who seemed to just as anti social as you.
Even Taehyung was unusually tame and reserved, matching the energy of the buyers and viewers around him while still coming off beyond charming and poised. It was almost magical to watch him work casual small talks into somebody buying his work or commissioning their own custom piece.
âYouâre good at this.â You had taken a moment to break away from the now mingling crowd and you sent the compliment his way in a hushed whisper.
He gave you a look that told you he already knew that but you could tell he was still thankful somebody was there to witness and confirm it. You watched him take a hefty sip of his wine and you raised an eyebrow at the sudden nervous look on his face, following his wandering gaze over to the front door where a handful of people had just entered.Â
âWhy did you invite me and not somebody else?â You werenât sure why you figured that line of questioning would get some answers out of him regarding his behavior recently but it seemed to work considering he turned to you with a heavier gaze.
âSomebody else wouldnât have understood any of this.â He was vague enough to leave you confused until his eyes moved back over to the newcomers, lingering on one just long enough for your mouth to part slightly in realization.
Taehyung had never publicly dated somebody in your entire decade of friendship and while he was more androgynous in his style and personality, he also hadnât come out to any of you with a particular label.
The way he was looking at the man standing in the corner silently was enough for you to understand what exactly he might have been hesitant to showcase to your other friends. None of them would have judged him from your knowledge but you imagined he didnât want the lighthearted teasing from your male friends or the insistent meddling from the extroverted girls.
âHeâs gorgeous.â Your eyes stayed on the man, similar to your friends and you heard him let out words of agreement accompanied by a longing sigh you were all too familiar with. âHave you spoken to him?â
âHe owns a gallery downtown with his sister.â He was quick to respond and you got the feeling he had been waiting to talk to somebody about this for a long time. âI did a show there and we got dinner afterwards, it was mainly business.â
You were nodding softly as he spoke on and on about the pretty man who was now laughing softly with an older woman and you suddenly wanted to laugh when you remembered your conversation with Jungkook last night, realizing just how wrong he was.
You wanted so badly to tell him about it but later that evening Taehyung had softly gripped your forearm and asked you sincerely to keep this a secret, his tone the most serious you had ever heard it.
The entire train ride home your head was buzzing with both pride for your friend and the urge to do something more with your own life, almost feeling envious of his passion for both art and romance.Â
There was a part of you that wanted to get home as fast as you could so you could start to figure out what direction to take your life at the ripe age of 25 and the other half was considering taking the subway past your stop just to see where you would end up.
You were sensible enough to head back to your apartment with the knowledge the sun was quickly setting but your feet faltered when you saw a familiar frame sitting on the steps outside your building.
âDid you lock yourself out?â You practically jogged the rest of the way over to Jungkook, concerned he had spent the entire day outside of your apartment but you felt a wave of reassurance when you realized he was wearing clothes you definitely didnât keep in your small drawer for him.
He was dressed nice or atleast as nice as you had seen him get in a while, ironed shirt tucked into a good grown up pair of pants with a leather belt. You watched him semi suspiciously when he pulled a small bouquet of flowers out from behind his belt and presented them to you.Â
âOh god, what did you do?â Your eyes widened in a slightly panicked manner and he glared at you harmlessly, thrusting the flowers in your direction and only smiling once you took them from him and sniffed them curiously.
âFirst off, very rude to assume I did something wrong.â He was stepping off of the steps so he was closer to you and you eyed him and his unusual outfit. âSecond, canât I just get you flowers?â
âThey are very pretty Jungkook, thank you.â You felt guilty for your initial approach even though you knew he wasnât actually offended and didnât mind your teasing. You lowered the flowers away from your face so you could give his outfit another long scan that told him you wanted a better explanation.Â
âYou looked nice earlier and it made me realize it had been awhile since we had gone out together.â He was shrugging like it was the most obvious thing in the world and your eyebrows furrowed.Â
His casual compliment was not lost on you and you felt that stupid chest rattling so hard you almost tipped over in your heels, shifting on your feet to remain steady as he watched you closely. You were sure your hair was messier now and your back was slightly hurting from standing all day at the event but you were not able to deny him on a regular occasion let alone when he applied effort into something for you.Â
âWeâve never âgone out togetherâ Jungkook.â Your tone was teasing as you wobbled a bit. âWe just end up places.â
You werenât exactly lying, despite your hundreds of lunch outings and adventures around the city, they had never been planned and never been mature enough for you to consider it a night out.Â
Jungkook seemed to be allergic to a stable job and luckily he was charismatic to be constantly pulling money from half a dozen half committed hustles. You had been barely above an intern when you first moved here and lived together so most of your meals consisted of quick serve ramen places and cheap street food just to stop the rumbling in your stomachs.
âWhat, Taehyung is the only guy who can take you to a nice outing?â He was smiling teasingly as he said it like he felt like he had figured you out and your mouth parted, almost forgetting you were not supposed to tell him what you had been told earlier.
Instead you pushed a hand against his chest and rolled your eyes, allowing the box to rattle when he was laughing boyishly and grabbing your wrist so he could tug you with him as he stumbled backwards, linking your arms together as he began to walk.Â
You didnât bother asking him where you were going and you werenât even sure he actually knew, letting your feet fall in unison with him as you allowed yourself to pretend you werenât exhausted so you could indulge him.Â
Selfishly, it was mostly for you and the opportunity to pretend you and Jungkook were just a normal pair who were heading out for a typical date night and not two best friends who had a little too much time on their hands.
Jungkook was telling you all about his day and the story that came along with how he got your flowers, exaggerated like always as he tried to entertain you. It worked as you laughed along with him and his sound effects and hand motions, listening to him as you walked together.Â
He shocked you by leading you back to the subway entrance and you glanced at him suspiciously, the two of you typically sticking with your local spots whenever you got dinner together.Â
âWhat are you up to Jeon Jungkook?â Your voice was low and mimicking an interrogation as the wind from the approaching train sent your loose hairs flying around your face.
His was in a similar state as he stood infront of you to block you most of the gust, fluffy locks falling forward above his eyes and making him frown as he reached up to push it back. You laughed at him and how ridiculous it looked and he sent a glare your way although you avoided it by boarding the now stopped subway car.
He was right behind you when you turned to face him in the packed space, leaning against one of the free support poles and smiling when you saw the infectious one he had. His hand was above your head so he could hold the metal as the train lurched forward and you tried to ignore the way he caged you in made your head spin.
âSo I donât actually have a plan.â He had to lean closer to you to be heard over the rattling of the car and the stackiy robotic voice over the speaker making announcements.Â
You couldnât help imagining what the two of you looked like to the various strangers around you, both dressed nicely and standing closer than the space called for. Your flowers were clutched tightly in your hands and you knew exactly what anyone who saw your eyes as you stared at him would see, anyone except for the recipient.
âI figured you were winging it.â You shrugged softly and huffed out a laugh when he was scrunching his face up in offense, free hand over his heart like you had hurt his feelings with your correct assumption. âAs long as you feed me I am happy.â
âTaehyung didnât provide food on your date?â His eyes were curious but you could sense something else that you couldnât put your foot on, pushing his shoulder.
âWill you cut that out?â You tried to sound firm enough that he would get you were actually uncomfortable without ruining the positive energy of the night. âItâs not like that.â
He raised an eyebrow down at you like he didnât believe a word you said but he thankfully didnât push any further for now even though you imagined it would be brought back up eventually considering how persistently annoying he was being regarding it.Â
Jungkook was taking your hand in his as the train stopped a few minutes later and you let him drag you out of the busy station with a sigh, weaving your way through the post work pre dinner crowd as you stayed behind his large frame with your arms dangling between you.Â
It was easy to fall inlove with him for the thousandth time as he glanced behind his shoulder routinely to make sure you were keeping up despite his tight grip on you already ensuring that, his wide eyes so patient and affectionate it almost made you want to throw up.
There was something about him against the landscape of a city at dusk that was completely devastating to your fragile heart and you had to look away before the rattling box full on exploded.Â
The two of you were making easy conversation as you walked together and you were overly aware of the fact he had no removed his hand from yours, most likely due to the heavy foot traffic around you but it pained you nonetheless and your skin felt like it was burning.
You were laughing so hard your stomach hurt and he was smiling at you like it was his singular goal and you barely realized you had been walking for so long until he was stopping infront of a deli and telling you to wait outside for him.
You stood there with a stupid smile on your face and your flowers in hand, tricking yourself for just a moment that this was something more than what it was.
âThose are pretty.â A voice from beside you pulled you from your dazed train of thought and you glanced at the man ruffling through the newspaper stand, pausing his movements to gesture towards your bouquet when you gave him a confused look.
âOh.â Your mouth parted in surprise and your cheeks turned pink at the unexpected small talk. âThank you, I think so too.â
You cleared your throat awkwardly and shuffled on your feet, glancing through the dirty glass to see if you could catch sight of Jungkook inside without making it too obvious that you felt ready to run away just to avoid an easy going conversation.
âFrom a boyfriend?â His eyebrow was raised and you shook your head instinctively with a soft shocked laugh at the realization he was potentially flirting with you. âGood to know, Iâm Hoseok.â
His hand was jutting out towards you and your eyes widened, shifting the bouquet between your forearm and chest so you could shake it. It was weirdly formal in an endearing way and you mirrored your name back to him in a soft whisper that made his eyes crinkle like he thought you were cute.Â
âI have to go but..â He paused and glanced at his watch with a sigh that made your head cock paitently. âIs it too forward to say I think you are beautiful and I would love to get your number so this interaction isnât so brief?â
You felt like you had somehow entered a different dimension today, one where you wear clothes that had been in the back of your closet for years and go to art galleries before a handsome stranger flirts with you outside of a corner store.Â
Your mouth is just opening to respond to him, not quite sure yet if you are going to agree or make up some excuse that you hope he doesnât see through, before the soft chiming bell of the door is ringing above you and Jungkook is wandering back out with two bags in his hands.
He is smiling when he sees you and then it fades when he sees your company, eyes narrowing a bit before he glances back at you and moves to stand by your side, hand on your lower back.Â
âReady to go?â His voice is stiffer than you were used to and you dumbly nod as you give Hoseok an apologetic look to which he gives you a polite understanding smile as he lifts his hand in a quick wave goodbye before going to cross the street.Â
Jungkook moves you forward down the street with his hand still on your back, an unfamiliar touch in this type of circumstance. You and him were no strangers to a touchy friendship but his hold felt almost pointed and you felt confusion swirling in your chest.
âWhat was that?â Your voice was hushed and you looked briefly at the side of his face as you walked together, his side profile showcasing no emotion you could understand or read. He was looking straight ahead and shrugging softly.Â
âYou look uncomfortable.â He said it simply like it was an easy given answer but you knew him well enough to know he didnât really believe what he was saying.Â
âI did? I didnât feel uncomfortable.â You were pushing it further than you typically would but you were a bit annoyed with how unusual he was being lately. Not annoyed in any way that mattered considering his hand on your back was still lighting your stomach on fire and you were deluding yourself into believing there was another reason for his interruption.
He shrugs again like he isnât sure what to say and you drop it, walking closely together as he silently leads you to a small park near one of the cities waterfront points.Â
You watch his large frame as he reaches into one of his paper bags and pulls out a small plaid blanket, throwing it down on the soft grass before he looks at you and gestures for you to sit. He seems awkward now and you give him a soft smile to let him know you arenât upset and he can relax.Â
âI pretty much just cleared them out.â He laughs a little as he joins you on the small blanket, close enough that your legs are pushed together and you watch with excitement as he pulls out various food items from the bags.
He ends it with a small single serving of cake in a plastic box and two drinks that remind you of the cheap liquor you used to sneak from your parents in high school. He presents with a small exaggerated noise and both of his hands stretching out to frame the display.
âWow just wow.â Youâre teasing him by raising your voice a bit and covering your mouth in mock gratitude, giggling as you pretend to wipe a tear from your eye. âThis is just above and beyond Jeon Jungkook. How did you know I loved bodega salads?â
His grin is bright like he hadnât expected you to play along with his theatrics and he waves you off casually like it was no big deal.Â
You are still laughing as he opens the containers and hands you things to try but you are genuinely a little taken back by the gesture, giving yourself a second to take in the view of the water with the city directly behind it. The sun had set by now and the lake seemed endless, wind blowing your hair over your shoulder as you looked back at him.
He was already watching you and you raised an eyebrow in question, not getting a response as he looked back down at the food.
âI think this is better than any dinner Iâve had since we moved here.â Your voice is soft as you finally speak, taking small pieces of things from his side of the blanket and tossing them into your mouth.Â
âAre you making fun of me?â He looks at you suspiciously and you laugh a little at the skepitcal tone he has, shaking your head and watching him fondly. âThen I think I agree with you.â
You stayed like that for atleast another hour and a half, eating the food slower than you usually would to keep yourselves there longer and you once again let yourself forget that this meant nothing at all.Â
It was easy to pretend when he was pulling out his small digital camera and taking candids of you as you laughed and told him to cut it out, easy to imagine when he was making you sit in the soft grass while he cleaned up your picnic, and devastatingly simple to feel like you were inlove in a different way when he was making you get on his back instead of walking back to the subway in your heels.
âDid you have a good time?â He sounded unlike himself when you finally got there, managing to get a seat now that most people had gotten home from work. You were leaning your head on his shoulder and watching your muddied reflections in the dirty and scratched window across from you.
Jungkook never sounded unsure or insecure, especially not when it came to something regarding you and your friendship and your stomach tightened at the realization he might actually be looking for the reassurance you were so typically seeking from him.Â
âSilly question.â You had a tired smile on your face that he couldnât see but you figured he would be able to hear it surrounding your gentle words.
âIndulge me?â He pushed for specifics and you only then realized he was very serious about this, picking your head up so you could look him in the eyes.
He easily met your gaze like he always did and the intensity was a bit much for you to handle although you werenât capable of looking away just yet.Â
There was a large part of you that knew exactly what to say, exactly what would be an easy answer that would both satisfy his random need for verbal feedback and also keep your ridiculous secret hidden for atleast another night more.
A much tinier and more pathetic piece was begging you to push just a little bit more, say something that would make him cross any singular line. You didnât need him to step out of your fairytales and profess his desire for you but maybe just enough of a hook to keep you from feeling so pathetic and almost conniving.
You knew he would probably take personal offense if you told him that you felt that way about yourself but you almost couldnât help it, knowing there was something more than friendship in this for you. It felt almost evil to keep something like that from him even though you could almost picture how gentle and amazing his rejection would be.
He would probably lecture you about how itâs not you and itâs him and he would give you a look so pitiful that it would make you sick.
âWhat was this Jungkook?âÂ
The stupid part of you wins and you want to blame it on the low alcohol bevarage you had chugged in an attempt to quiet your stupid box down but you knew there wasnât a single moment in life you were more sober than you were now and you were just plainly outrageously deluded.Â
âI donât know what you mean.â He says it softly with an edge of confusion but you see it.Â
As the train pulls to a stop at a station that isnât yours, you see the telltale sign that he lying to you. His expressive eyes are almost wide and he is trying his best to act casual but you had spent almost a decade telling similar lines and your mind starts to spin.Â
âYes you do.â Your voice is firmer now and you sit up a little bit on the smooth seats, turned sideways so you are facing him while he still has to turn his head to look at you fully. âI think you really do.â
He doesnât say anything and you are not stupid enough to say the words outloud, to accuse him of the exact crime you are guilty of would have consequences you canât even begin to think about and you almost look away if it wasnât for that look in his eyes.Â
You want to pry and pull it out of him, reach deep into his chest and see if you had gotten it all wrong or if he had a box of his own somewhere in there.Â
It lurches again as it begins to move and he sways with it, eyes shutting for a second as he turns to face forward and get away from your intense and almost knowing gaze.Â
âLetâs not do this.â His voice is tight and pained now and you had heard it a million ways but never like this, never like he is scared of what is going to come out.Â
âDo what, what am I doing?â You are genuinely puzzled and youâre almost frantic to keep him talking about this. âWhat are we doing?â
He takes awhile to not speak again and you almost think he is going to sit like that until the train stops again, leaving you in the non silence and weight of the things he will not say. His eyes open and they are colder when they look at you again and itâs in a way that knocks the breath out of you.
They are not angry but they are detached and such a vast difference from the adoring expression he normally gives you and now you wonder again what you look like to other people riding home late after a long day. Maybe two strangers in a disagreement or a couple bickering about trivial things, something much simpler than what it actually is.
You suddenly feel like youâre going to vomit when you realized how similar his frustrated is to the one youâd been feeling since before you even had your drivers license. It is far too familiar and you turn in your seat so you are facing forward again and your hand comes to your mouth, either to catch the puke or your next words.
âHow long have you known?â You wince as you say it and you hate that he is the one looking at you now, eyes boring into the side of your face as you fight to not look at your reflections.Â
Your question is vague enough to avoid putting it into the verbal world of existence but if your thoughts are correct then he knows exactly what you are referring to.Â
How long have you known I was inlove with you, how long have I been failing at deceiving you, how many years did you know our friendship was a big fat scam on my end and how long have you tried not to detest me for it?
âMaybe forever? I donât know.â He sounds exhausted and his pitch raises a bit as his hands jut into the air before landing back on his legs with a smack that almost makes you jump. Â
Your mouth parts in surprise, both at his answer and the tone he says it in. Youâre standing up before the train has a chance to stop fully and you arenât sure if youâre stumbling because of the way it pulls or because you genuinely feel like you are about to be sick if you have to sit here for another second and listen to him sound so upset about this.Â
Your feet tangle together as you rush out of the station and you know he is close behind you because he always is but you canât bring yourself to look at him anymore.
The universe must be laughing at you for finally getting your camera because the clear skies of the night are gone and itâs beginning to sprinkle now, making your walk to the next block over much faster as you nearly run towards your apartment.
âY/N.â His voice is loud behind you and your body whips around on instinct, not able to ignore him in any circumstance but especially not when he sounds so wounded. âIt.. it doesnât have to be a big deal, you wonât hurt my feelings if you just pretend this didnât happen. We donât need to change things.â
He almost sounds like he is pleading for you to forgive him and the irony of that hits you hard.Â
You arenât even sure what he is really asking for you to do here, is he suggesting you go back to pretending (quite awfully apparently) you arenât inlove with him or is he saying he doesnât quite mind if you are. You canât decide which answer hurts you more and you glare at him for being so selfless and kind.Â
âWhat part of this makes you think this wonât change things?â You have venom in your voice now and you watch his face flinch just enough for you to feel terrible.
You arenât sure why you are suddenly so angry at him or why you just want to scream and leave him standing in the light rain that is slowly picking up like its mocking your emotional state.Â
It is not his fault he is so easy to love and that he can read you so easily, of course the boy who can tell when you are upset or hungry or tired off of a quick glance would know the feeling that never leaves your mind and heart no matter how hard you try.
He didnât even do anything wrong in his attempts to fix what you had broken, willing to take any course to keep your friendship the same because he thinks it is what you want. You decide you are angry that that is his solution because it is all he can give you, friendship, and you are more fucked up than you realized for being upset at him for that.
âIâm sorry.â His voice sounds hurt and pleading still and he takes quick steps towards you that make you want to sob but you wonât, not here and not with him staring at you like that.Â
âI am.â You shake your head and sigh, suddenly feeling very cliche and stupid for yelling at each other in the rain like some shitty cheesy romcom. You easily slip your hand into his and pull him in the direction of your apartment, hoping he is willing to stay with you despite the potential awkwardness and isnât planning to run away as soon as he gets you home safe.Â
He squeezes your hand in his and you close your eyes just as tight, wishing he would be a little less sweet just for a few moments.
You donât think he is capable of being cold to anybody, especially not you, but it makes it all the more painful to know you donât deserve it.Â
You are back to heavy silence as you enter your apartment and you glance at his hoodie from last night still draped over your arm chair, looking away and kicking off your heels that are collecting water inside of them as it drips off of your clothes.Â
The urge to change into something dry and warm is surging your entire being but instead you head into the kitchen and you hear him take slow hesitant steps before he is sighing and going in the direction of your bedroom. You grip your counter and close your eyes to stop from asking him what he was going to say.
Instead you busy yourself with the stove and a familiar recipe that makes you sigh in premature relief just from the scent alone.Â
Jungkook eventually returns and follows the smell to find you setting too warm mugs down on the coffee table in the living room, dressed in a large shirt and the same sweatpants from last night. His hair is damp from the rain and falling over his forehead in a painful way and you awkwardly glance at him.Â
Any other day you would warn him that it is too hot to drink before going to change too but now you just watch him as he shifts awkwardly before sitting down slowly on the carpet infront of the table. You clear your throat and walk down the hallway, moving on autopilot as you pull off the wet clothes and replace them with pajamas.Â
You are back in the living room with him before you even process your feet moving and you listen to him sip the hot chocolate before wincing at the scolding liquid and placing the mug down.
âItâs hot you know.â Your teasing remark is meant to break the tension and bring a sense of normalcy back into the heavy room but it comes out forced and awkward and he barely manages to pull a chuckle out.Â
You sit next to him with a sigh and pull your sleeves over your hands so you can nurse his hot mug, blowing on it gently and ignoring your steaming one next to it.Â
Itâs a habit you had always had but he was looking at you like it was his first time realizing you did that and it was another nail in the coffin of change. Things were going to be different now no matter what he said or how hard you tried to avoid it.
âI really am sorry.â His voice was soft and a whisper that struck you harder than anything he could have shouted. You gave him a sad smile and nodded your head in understanding. âDo you want to talk about it or are you tired?â
âWe can talk.â You shrugged like it was a casual choice but you werenât sure what the alternative was. You had anxiety thrumming in your chest that he might leave before you were ready and talking about it kept him here for atleast a few more sentences, atleast until your mugs were empty.
Your agreement didnât kick start him into any type of conversation and it fell silent again outside of your soft breathing on the mug and the rain pattering against your window.Â
âAre you upset about how I feel?â He finally spoke again and you paused your blowing in favor of watching him, setting the glass down on the table and giving him your full attention. The distraction wasnât working anyways and you felt sick again.
You shook your head because you didnât trust yourself to speak and he looked more pained at your silence, eyes low and wounded. Your suddenly felt watery and you knew you would truly have to dig a hole for yourself if you cried, the last thing you wanted to do was to make him feel bad about any of this.
âYou canât help it.â You internally winced at the way your words shook and cracked, very telling signs of somebody who was about to pathetically sob. âBut I canât either.â
He looked equal parts confused and accepting of this answer and you got the urge to just lay it all out in the open since everything was already falling apart in a way you could not control.
âI thought I was doing a better job at hiding it and Iâm sorry if I made you feel weird or like I didnât value our friendship because that isnât true at all, it means the world to me. I am just an idiot and I-I donât even know what else to say other than I am so sorry Jungkook.â You are speaking so fast you feel dizzy at the pace and you are suddenly facing him again so you can be positive the words reach their destination.
You had practiced a hundred times how to tell him how you felt and none of those scenarios ended up sounding like this, a jumbled and desperate plea to be forgiven.
His mouth had parted halfway through your speech like he was wanting to interrupt you and you wanted to run out of your own house when you saw his eyes widen in surprise, maybe at the realization of just how fucked up you actually were.
The room fell silent again and this time it was tortuous, your soft breaths from speaking so quickly being the only thing you could focus on.Â
âIâm confused.âÂ
His voice cut through the air and you almost wanted to scream, knowing you could not repeat any of that again. You gave him an intense stare as you tried to figure out where exactly you had lost him in your spiel and his eyebrows furrowered at your look.
âI thought you were mad at me for liking you.â He was pointing between the two of you as you spoke and suddenly the box was rattling so hard you werenât sure if it was just an imaginary metaphor anymore.Â
âWhat?â It came out loud and aggressive but he didnât react, sitting up a little straighter and watching you with an almost frustrated expression.Â
âDo you have a crush on me?â He was pointing at his chest again and you wanted to smack his hand away.
You werenât sure how to answer that because it was honestly the most ridiculous thing you had heard outloud all night and there quite a few contenders. You were dumbfounded both by the fact he had to ask what you thought he realized forever ago and also because the idea of having a mere crush almost made you laugh.
A crush was not what you had but you dumbly nodded your head, settling for accepting the vague notion that you had some sort of romantic feelings for him.
His hands were covering his face and he let out a groan so loud you flinched. His noise turned into something that you thought was a sob until you realized he was laughing at you, almost hysterically laughing so hard that he was leaning over onto his knees before rocking backwards again.
The tears that were sitting on your waterline were falling freely now and you were frozen in shock at the fact he was actually laughing at you.
You had never felt so hurt in your entire life and you were even more blindsided that your sweet best friend was apparently capable of this kind of cruelty. The idea of him being upset or disappointment in your firm confirmation was way more appealing than him finding you straight up comedic.
âYou should go.â You had never uttered those words to him before and you had hoped they came off as fiery and angry as you felt under the devastation but instead it was said in an unchareristic choked sob that had his hands immediately flying off of his face.
His eyes were wide and guilty as he took in the expression you had and your wet cheeks and he was shuffling forward to cup your face.
âOh shit, fuck.â He was wiping your teary trails as fast as they came and staring at you with remorse, only making you cry harder. âWait donât cry.â
âYouâre laughing at me.â You sounded childish and whiny but you didnât know what else to be in this situation, too comfortable to be truly cruel to him despite the want to be. How can he be so hurtful and then hold you like he wasnât responsible for your extreme reaction?
âWhat? No Iâm not.â He was shaking his head and his face was creasing with confusion like it was the most ridiculous thing you could have said. âIâm laughing at us, at how stupid we are.â
You were exhausted from this entire night and you had no response to give him despite your confusion and want for him to explain what could possibly be so fucking funny about all of this stupidty. You sat there silently crying and staring at him as he sighed like he only just realized he needed to speak what he was thinking and was finding it burdensome.Â
âYou have to know that I like you too Y/N.â He was whispering it like he was still trying to keep it a secret and that damned box flew open, sending its lock and chains flying around your chest in a million sharp pieces. âYouâre the last person in the world to figure it out apparently.âÂ
You had absolutely zero idea what to say to that or how to even begin to process the level of misunderstanding and blurred communication that had happened in just a few hours. His apologies on the way home and guilty expression suddenly made alot more sense considering he wasnât sorry about breaking your heart and instead apologicetic he had made you break his.Â
âI thought you were messing with me until I saw you were crying and, god you donât like to mess with people anyways. I really fucked this all up didnât I.â It was his turn to ramble now and you watched him with a quivering lip and soft sniffles as you stopped crying slowly.Â
âYouâre not rejecting me?â Youâd be caught dead before talking in this tone around anyone else but he wasnât just anyone and his eyes softened like you were the cutest thing in the world to him.
âI may be stupid but Iâm not that big of an idiot.â He was laughing a little at himself or maybe the idea of ever rejecting you and now it was your turn to groan. âI thought you were inlove with Taehyung.â
âTaehyungâs gay.â You were blurting it out from the frustration of the situation and you covered your face like he had a few seconds ago.Â
His mouth was parted in surprise when you gathered the courage to look at him again and you almost laughed, mouth barely turning up from the ridiculousness of everything transpiring.Â
âThat actually makes a lot of sense.â His slow reply made you burst into delirious giggles and he smiled at your reaction.Â
It seemed like the hard part of the conversation was finally over and you leaned on your side against the footrest of the couch, sighing softly.Â
âWe have to be the two stupidest people alive.â
âYouâre not stupid.â He was shaking his head and there it was again, that familiar offended tone he always had when you insulted yourself.Â
You suddenly felt like you must be because it was increasingly obvious to you that he must feel some sort of positive non platonic way towards you. The look in his eye was so apparent now that you werenât sure how you ever missed it before, so stuck in your own attempts to disguise your own gaze.Â
âI donât know what to do now or what this means.â Youâre staring straight ahead but not really looking at anything as your mind spins and reels. It all is starting to feel a bit far from reality and you let out a humorless disbeliving laugh. âI mean you are you and Iâm..â
You trail off but he knows exactly where you were going with that statement and that same annoyance he radiated when you made the comment about Taehyung was back tenfold. His glare was on you but you knew it was directed towards that mean insecure voice inside you and not anything else.
âMaybe you are stupid because you really have no idea what happens to a room when you walk into it.â He looks angrier than youâd ever seen him but itâs the type of anger that comes when he tastes a particularly delicious bite of food or sees a cute dog on tiktok, nothing like the face he has whenever his dad calls or when a job falls through.Â
Everything about what he is saying makes no sense to you and you suddenly have the urge to crawl into your bed and sleep this off, hoping you can wake up tomorrow either ten steps backwards or four years in the future.
There is a lengthy silence where the two of you just stare at eachother and you keep waiting for it to feel wrong or feel like you made a grave mistake that you canât take back but your heart seems to recall who you are sitting with much faster than your brain.
You canât think of a time where you had ever felt wrong when you were in the same space as Jungkook and the uncertainty of the future and what this conversation means for your connection and friendship has nothing on the tie between you that flows with every look and nervous smile.
Loving him was as easy as any breath you could take and you looked away with silence in your warmed chest as you took another sip of your hot chocolate.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW ALL THESE YEARS IT WAS LOOSELY BASED ON ETHEL CAIN OH MY GOD.
More than loosely! The setting and overall theme is directly referencing her work and lore. The entire aesthetic and time period is built around that albums feel and sound and I listened to it on repeat while writing it for the weeks I did. It steals moods from Bones and All and that vibe too but mostly Ethel. A few of my works are either inspired by her or I use her lyrics as the titles lol. Big fan!

I loveeee analysis and would willing drown in whatever theories and thoughts you guys have about any work. I havenât read lots of new works so definitely feeling your nostalgia for the older writing style and glad to fill that void a little!

My next post might be a bit surprising because it is not an enhypen story but if youâre an older follower I wanted to let you know that I still love them and plan to write for them. I have about a dozen half finished fics I was struggling to finish and writing this next one was a breeze and reminded me a lot of my pre writers block days lol. I hope you still can enjoy and I hope it brings new people to my work! I might consider rewriting it and replacing the name with an enhypen member but those types of works tend to feel impersonal to me so no promises! Id still love to hear what some familiar faces think about it even if you donât stan the idol⊠(spoiler alert that itâs Jungkook so⊠not sure how you wouldnât)
