I’ve just re-read “Lovers in a Dangerous Time,” multiply that “re” by three or four, have fallen in love again, with this version of Jamie and Claire and with the writing. Is the scene at the close of chapter 9 the most irresistible? The scene: Claire, married to control-freak Frank, is charmed by the two little girls who move in next door, and by their father, the widower with the finest parenting skills ever. And the most seductive voice, as he proves (here comes the scene) when he and Claire are drinking after finishing cleaning up after his open house, the guest gone, his daughters put to bed, the two of them sitting close on a sofa, well into a bottle of whisky. Imagine the Scots’ burr when Jamie says, “Dance wi’ me?”  

            Another salute, to fellow-commenter reader83, for her excellent choice of “best of” in fan fics. I couldn’t agree more about LIADT and “Conversations in the Dark,” want to say thank you for the nudge toward “Practice,” my current comfort-read (only 7 chapters in, I hope it will be comforting). I’d like to add another trio to “best of” in fanfics: “Saorsa,” @scapegrace74; “Jimjeran,” @betweensceneswriter; “The Stars Will Sing for Us” @fallofrain. 

I wish I could send the author of LIADT a bouquet as meaningful as the one Jamie chooses for Claire, made of whatever flowers signify, “Good writing!”

well, that's one hell of a question! perhaps the only must-read for doctor who is Time v.3.0 by Teyke, a haunting and terrifying fic about the time war. nonetheless, it is not necessarily my favourite fic... i honestly don't know what that is. In Due Time We Shall Reap by Thascalos is beyond explicit, but, well, formative influences (aka 'that thing you read over and over again at A Certain Age') are formative influences whether or not you want them to be, i suppose. don't bury me by petroltogo is haunting.

as far as humour goes, The Grand Sci-Fi Fuckathon of Hitler and Stalin by yonderdarling is the funniest thing i've ever read. yes, really... don't drink whilst you read it. runners-up for Funniest are: How Now, Brown Monkey by Liadt and The King of Tallstoria by the_alchemist. all i can really say, i suppose, is don't give medieval kings candy crush.

it's unfinished, but i'm currently putting The Red Rose of York by medieval_scribe up there. Like Gods by Ade. Continuitas by skazka. Mary on a cross by Neolina_W. thou child of my right hand by heartofstanding. (shattering! i am not sure at this point that i am capable of identifying a favourite piece!) Periapsides by avani. No Indifferent Judge by edwardianspinsteraunt. sincerest apologies if you have not, for some strange reason, whiled away the hours haunted by baldwin iv.

of comfort and despair by damnedscribblingwoman is definitely an all-time favourite, and i really mean it this time.

Lovers in a Dangerous Time Chapter Twenty One

This is shorter than my typical chapter, but something about the flow just wasn't working when I tried to add anything more, so I give you what I have. Please be gentle as I'm a little rusty and this wasn't beta'd - I'm nothing if not impulsive, y'all! And again, I just have to say that the support you all have given me as a human being and as a writer is just mind-blowing. Thank you, and I love you. Now let's dive back in!

  If Jenny seemed a touch surprised to find Claire would be joining them for the day—and shot her brother a look that said she had questions and she’d get answers—she warmed substantially by the time the blankets were laid out over the sand, held down by coolers and bodies as the four adults made a joint effort to subdue their excited brood long enough to slather them in sun cream. The little ones were squirmy, be it from anticipation or a general distaste for lotions, and Jamie was pleased to see his sister and the woman he loved laughing companionably as Caitlin slipped out of her mother’s grasp over and over before Jenny finally managed to get her covered from head to toe.

    “Alright now, we’ve got to wait fifteen minutes before we can go in the water,” Claire announced brightly, dropping her phone back on the blanket after setting a timer.

    Jamie had to hold back a laugh at the way her brows scrunched together when the children huffed and groaned, small feet stomping with annoyance in the sand. Nurturing might have come easy to his Sassenach, but the daily ins and outs of life with children was a learning curve for anyone.

    “Ye canna just tell them tae wait,” he murmured, sidling up just as close as the comically large, structured brim of her sunhat would allow, “ye’ve gotta give ‘em another activity.”

    He nodded over at Ian as he overturned a bag of sand toys.

    “They dinna understand delayed gratification yet.”

    “They’re missing out.”

[Fenris raises his eyebrows at Hawke. She grins at him and jerks her thumb at the audience.]

Hawke: Go on, tell them how lovable and charming and irresistible I am.  

[He glances resentfully at the audience.] 

Fenris: What I fell in love with… [looks at her] You are humble.

Hawke: [laughs] Humble? I just announced that I’m lovable and charming and irresistible!

Fenris: [smirks] You’re being facetious. I meant as a mage. You never hold your power over others like a weapon. I didn’t even realize you were a mage at first.

Hawke: That’s because you were so distracted by how lovable and charming–

[Fenris pinches her waist. She squeaks and smacks his hand.]

Fenris: You are a skilled mage, but you are humble about your skill. That is what allowed me to trust you.

Hawke: And to fall in love with me?

Fenris: [softly] Yes. That, and your ridiculous sense of humour.

Hawke: Ah, yes. I am ridiculous most of the time, it’s true.

Fenris: [smirks] As for my favourite things… [He pauses, then smiles at her.] You are lovable, charming, and irresistible. 

Hawke: [giggles and pokes his arm] That’s not fair! You’re just using the words I said before!

Fenris: No one said that I can’t. Now it’s your turn.

Hawke: Fine, fine. I fell in love with Fenris because – Maker’s balls, look at him. If he’s not the most beautiful man in Thedas, I don’t want to see who is, because I’ll go blind.

Fenris: Fasta vass, Hawke. 

[She bursts out laughing, and Fenris shakes his head]

Fenris: You fell in love with my appearance? That is not love, that’s lust.

Hawke: All right, true. But that’s not why I fell for you. [to the audience] I fell for him because he’s strong. He speaks up for what’s right, or what he thinks is right. He… [She trails off and smiles at him.] He speaks up and defends himself, which is huge for an ex-slave. He’s also smart. Maker, so fucking smart and logical. And skeptical. He questions everything and doesn’t trust something if it can’t be proven. [laughs] He can be pretty stubborn about that, actually.

Fenris: [scoffs] You love that I am skeptical and stubborn?

Hawke: Yes, of course! You wouldn’t be you if you weren’t skeptical and stubborn. And smart, and strong and funny and–

Fenris: Funny?

Hawke: Yes, you’re funny! You make the funniest comments!

Fenris: A side effect of spending so much time with you, I think. It must be contagious.

Hawke: [laughs] I don’t think so. Your humour is much more dry than mine. 

Fenris: Hm. All right, shall we–

Hawke: Wait, I’m not done! I didn’t say my favourite things! [to the audience] My favourite things about Fenris are… [smiles] that he’s strong and smart and stubborn and skeptical and funny. 

[Fenris snorts, and Hawke grins and pokes him.]

Hawke: Don’t laugh! You didn’t do any better!

Fenris: Fine. You’re right. My favourite things about you are… [He pauses and frowns.] I have no favourite thing. 

Hawke: [laughs] Well, that hurts my feelings.

Fenris: It shouldn’t. [He leans in close to her and lowers his voice until his words are barely audible.] You are my favourite person, Hawke. There is no single favourite thing about you.

[She grins and ducks her head. Her cheeks are turning pink. She looks up at the audience again.]

Hawke: Excuse us, will you? I have a favourite activity I’d like to do with my favourite person. 

Fenris: Fasta vass.

A Wee Update

EDIT: I should have included this from the go, so that’s my mistake, but trigger warning for substance use and relapse. If I missed any others, please do let me know. 

     Hello hello hello, beautiful people! As many of you noticed, I was absent from our little corner of the internet for a pretty long stretch there, and now that I’m back I thought I’d post an update on myself and my stories all in one place. So, this is that! 

     First and foremost, I want to apologize for disappearing without a word. I’ve been pretty open about my struggle with addiction, and a big part of the disease for me is a tendency to isolate and, up until pretty recently, a lack of understanding (and, on some level, willful ignorance) regarding my place and meaning in the lives of other people. Turns out it’s a lot easier to fuck around if you genuinely believe that you don’t matter to others in any meaningful way. Also turns out that that belief was a big ole lie. 

     So many of you reached out across platforms to check in on me with words of encouragement and concern, praise and appreciation for my work as a writer and questions about if and when my stories would continue, especially in regards to LIADT. I want you to know that coming back to that outpouring of love and care was deeply touching and incredibly powerful. Thank you all from the tippy bottom of my toes to the tippy top of my head for the love, support and grace you have given me. 

     It’s slow going as I start to flex those writer muscles again, but I am getting back to it (and I’m very, very happy about that). LIADT is my priority at the moment, and my intention is to have at the very least a preview of the next chapter up on here by the end of the month. That being said, I don’t plan to abandon any of my current WIPs (so long as Mizz Fickle Muse herself decides to cooperate), so keep an eye out for those in the future as well. (And the new idea that’s been simmering in the back of my mind for a few months now). I’ll thank you all in advance for your continued patience as I work. 

     And now, the personal side of things. Addiction is a hell of a disease, y’all!  Unfortunately I made a very sad, very unglamorous return to active addition over the winter, and I had a pretty rough go of it on all sides. I was bankrupt mentally, emotionally and spiritually. After a particularly disturbing episode near the end of March, I reached out to the sponsor that I had been ghosting and decided to try again. 

     Hear me when I say that so long as you are breathing, it is never too late to try again, and you can never start over too many times, in whatever you are trying to conquer. 

     Now, this is not to say that relapse is a good or necessary part of recovery from addiction. Plain and simple, my use could very well kill me. That could have been it. But, at this moment in time, it is incredibly common. It is not something to be embarrassed or ashamed about. I am not ashamed, or embarrassed. I am grateful that I’m still here, that no irreparable damage was done, and that I got to try again. 

     So this is me now! Happy, healthy, whole, and healing. Bandanas and sparkling water and vintage dresses and sunshine. I feel both younger and older than I ever have. I sang for an audience for the first time in years and it felt even better than it sounded. I am mercilessly earnest and open and joyful. I show up for the people I love, and the people I love now includes myself. I feel like an open wound sometimes, but that feels so much better than being the damaged tissue beneath the scab. 

     It does get better. It gets even better than you can possibly imagine for yourself, if you’re willing to let it. If you or anyone that you love is struggling with substance use and/or mental health, let me be a resource. I can’t keep it if I don’t pass it on.

The Favourite. It was... OK. Lots of fun bits where Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone were bitchy to each other, and Rachel Weisz wore men’s clothes for a lot of it, which I’m in favour of. But the ending was just... where’s the rest of the film? When I said this to my friend, she said - have you ever seen any of the director’s other films? And I said no. And I thought - did everyone know it was going to be like this??? I guess maybe.
