So anyone who has ever spoken to me about anime knows my all time favorite is Eureka 7. After recently getting to rewatch it,I found some model kits for the LFOS! I got 909,nirvash, and the 606 (I wish they had the 808 and the END 😭) but they came in today and I spent the evening building the 606!
Love how small and clean these kits are and I'm obsessed you can put them on the board. Can't wait to build the others!!

Another drone patch primarily driven by Marbles. Vector envelope modulates Ts-L wavefold while Peaks controls the Ikarie VCA. The former is triggered by the gate out of tELHARMONIC, so it plays every time degree changes. Phase output of tH goes into Ikarie, which is really the star of the show on this patch.
Resonance is very high so the filter is singing/ringing through much of the piece. Y LFO modulates stereo (it is also played by hand) to really animate the stereo field. Beyond output goes into Yester Versio and then Data Bender for even more space, and the glitchy/alias-y texture throughout. When the resonance really peaks, it rings through the feedback.
I'm not certain where the black bar came from on the side of the gif. Ah well.

Buddie Moodboard - Eureka Seven AU
So yeah, this manga and anime series has had me in its clutches for a looooong time. And I couldn't resist the temptation anymore lol.
Some background on the main concepts of Eureka Seven: The story largely revolves around the relationship between the alien species of the Scub Corals (Coralians) and humans in the faraway future, exemplified by the main characters Renton (human) and Eureka (humanoid Coralian). Scubs take on different shapes and powerful creatures capable of changing the law of physics at will. Their origins are unknown. At some point, they crashed down on Earth and merged with the lifeforms in the sea. They used fusion as a means of communication, but thereby almost overtook humanity, which made humans leave Earth and forced the Scubs into adaption. People use LFOs (Light Finding Operation) to fly and fight in the air, bio-mechanical hybrids that can ride (lift) on so-called trapars (transparence light particles, a form of energy the Scubs produce that function like water or wind). The first Summer of Love was a catastrophe that kicked off the events of the main plot line. A destructive shockwave that brought the world to ruin and led to civil wars. Scub Corals went into hibernation to prevent the so-called Limit of Questions, the point in time when too many sentient lifeforms in a given space will lead to the collapse of reality, thereby causing a black hole to tear through space and absorb the entire planet.
So, this story would take 10,000 years after the events of Eureka Seven, giving “ample” time for things to be forgotten or changed or made worse. So yeah... that was a lot of intro. Anyway. Hope you enjoy despite it all. Cheers!
It’s the year 22,022.
Aboard the Aion, the infamous crew of the 118 is readying itself for their next strike against the military. Under the lead of Captain Bobby Nash, the crew is determined to stop the evil machinations within the government from unfolding.
Most of the members used to be part of the military, including LFO pilots Hen and Chimney as well as Buck and Eddie. But they left the military alongside their captain, once the full gravitas of the government’s wrongdoings came to light on their last mission. They would not have any part in taking innocent lives, they decided. Which marked the end of the 118th Squad and the rise of the Aion 118.
And so, they left, they flew, they got away. At least for a while. Because they knew they couldn’t find peace until they stopped the government’s plans. Because they chose to protect, and they won’t abandon that mission until it is done.
Already back at the Academy, Buck and Eddie were inseparable. It only seemed natural for them to become co-pilots for the LFO they named Jabberwocky, Jab for short. In fact, their personalities and battle strategies balance out perfectly. While Buck is more hot-headed, quick to think and even quicker to act, Eddie’s calm and focused demeanor match it perfectly.
Nothing much has changed about that since, even though their time in the military and everything that led up to them leaving it certainly changed them personally. Eddie lost his wife in the Seven Swell that marked the end of the 118’s service. And he almost would have lost both his son and Buck in the tsunami that followed the blast of the Seven Swell. Though thankfully, Buck was able to save Christopher and bring him home.
After that, everything was changed. Everyone was.
If Buck and Eddie didn’t have a high stakes mission on their hands, they might have the time to find out just what they are to one another now. What started out as a mere source of comfort, the answer to a need, has shifted over time. Buck and Eddie don’t just share quarters, not just bed, but their lives. Though there are many things left unsaid between them despite that fact. Because losing what they have seems to be one of the few things that can actually scare the two. And so, they just hold on to each other, come what may.
Though perhaps it’s a welcome distraction for them both, focusing on that mission instead of whatever someone may call their relationship. Saving the world is good enough as an excuse, right? And so, they spend every minute they have to spare to live: They are there for Christopher, lift together, sometimes all three of them thanks to the special board they built for Eddie's son. They have each other's back in battle, only to fight over the music playing in their quarters. And occasionally, they dance the night away, to forget. If only for a while.
Things take a sudden turn when the 118 is led into a trap, involving a teenager from Bobby’s past who is out for vengeance. To get back at Bobby for his supposed involvement in his father’s death during a military operation, Freddy is set on making the captain “pay for his sins”.
Despite Bobby’s efforts to dissuade Freddy, he attacks Jabberwocky while Buck is still inside the LFO, causing it to partially explode. Buck crashes into the ocean, and everyone is bound to watch it happen. While Eddie manages just in time to save Buck from drowning, things are far from fine once they return to the Aion to have Buck treated. Not only Jab has seen heavy damage, but Buck sustained great injury that won't easily heal.
Hen cautions them all that it’s possible that Buck won’t ever be able to lift again, just like it’s possible the injuries may prevent him from operating an LFO ever again. For Buck, that’s a blow almost impossible to take. He always defined himself for being able to do that, for being an outstanding lifter and an LFO pilot. And now he’s supposed to have neither of these things, be neither of those things. Then what’s left of him?
Nothing, right?
Eddie’s efforts to try to get through to Buck to make him see what’s beyond his life as a lifter and LFO pilot remain fruitless at first. Buck turns in on himself, away from him, from everyone. And for the first time in their lives together, Eddie doesn’t know how to have his back, how to make Buck stay with him.
But the shocks don’t end just there. Buck feels certain changes in himself ever since he crashed into the ocean. He hears voices where there are none. His eyes hurt all the time. The world looks different. Everything is changed, even though it’s not. And Hen keeps telling him that everything is fine with him. Just that it isn’t.
When his eyes start to turn purple and red, Buck knows that it can’t just be the injuries. Fearing that he might wind up hurting Eddie, Chris, or anyone else of the crew, he only confides in Hen as the ship’s doctor. Upon learning of this, Hen is able to figure out what’s going on with Buck. Though that doesn’t change things for the better at all: Ever since the crash, his DNA became more and more Coralian, which is unheard of.
You’re either born with Coralian DNA or you are not. You either have Coralian descent from the time when humanoid Coralians roamed the earth thousands of years ago, or you don’t. There is no such thing as developing this DNA. Just that there suddenly seems to be.
The Scub Corals have been part of Earth for over 30,000 years, a life form set on communication through fusion with other species. Ever since the Second Summer of Love, humanity pledged not to fight the Scub Corals ever again. To prevent The Limit of Questions from ever happening another time and thus destroying the universe as we know it, it became also a prime directive to ensure the Scub Corals on Earth remained in eternal slumber, to which the Scub Corals had agreed. Their deepest wish was and is to be part of the world where they might one day co-exist with humans, just as it used to be. Therefore, a strict separation of humans and Scub Corals was implemented, especially the Command Cluster in the middle of the Pacific was declared off-bounds for humans.
Humans bearing Coralian DNA are not allowed into military, to ensure that knowledge of intel cannot be passed on to the Command Cluster, should the Scub Corals reawaken, now by accident or not.
Therefore, it’s not possible for Buck to have Coralian DNA, even though that explains the symptoms as well as the test results Hen has. Hen cautions Buck that this may make his situation impossibly worse. They have historical records of what happened to human-Coralian hybrids. They all died as the result of trapars in the air. Which means that the thing that used to make Buck free, lifting, may actually mark his death sentence. Hen vows to find a cure to reverse the effects, but Buck knows he has to reckon with the fact that he may not be able to remain on Earth.
Buck is forced to reveal his status to the crew soon thereafter. And while he shouldn’t be surprised that everyone is determined to help him, Buck is still caught off-guard when Bobby refuses to dismiss him from the crew due to the dangers he may pose to them. Buck dares to put his faith in his team to support him on this journey, so he may stay home.
Though Buck’s health issues soon turn out to be part of the mission they have had all along. Apparently, there were military and government operations in place that were not in accordance with the pledge made to the people and the Coralians. Seeking out Coralians in slumber for their own benefit may actually lead to a third Summer of Love. And if so, it is very well possible that the Scub Corals will awaken from the impact and thus reach the Limit of Questions.
While the Aion 118 rushes to prevent a third Summer of Love near the Command Cluster, Buck has to make up his mind about his future on this planet, even though it means having to do what he has been so scared of for all of his life.
But for his team, he’d do anything. For his family, he would. For love, he will.

Throwback: Bjork-Alarm Call
Tumblr media
Bjork's "Alarm Call" was inspired by her belief in music's power to change things. It was the fourth single from her third album, Homogenic. She wrote the words, and Mark Bell of the techno group LFO produced the song's New Jack Swing-ish beats. Bjork was seeking one style of music, which was the purpose of the Homogenic title, and she wanted to pay tribute to her native Iceland. The result was a mash of strings and dance beats as the dominant sound of the album. Alexander McQueen directed the second video for the song after Bjork was displeased with the first one shot by Paul White. The late designer gave her a 100-page treatment for the visual that has her on a raft in a jungle playing with wild animals. "Alarm Call" has several remixes, and the French one hit the Top Ten in the UK. Homogenic has become Bjork's most critically acclaimed album, and most fans believe it is her best work. The artist linked with singer-songwriter Rosalía to release "Help Fight Fish Farming In Iceland" in October of 2023 to raise money to pay legal fees for the people of Seyðisfjörður who are protesting industrial salmon farms.

eventually one of the things i want to build & use as part of this project is a "waveform animator". i know there are modules for this from multiple established manufacturers, and i don't know how they work, but i do know they tend to be large and expensive.
my own take on the idea is basically a phaser - i.e. a bunch of all-pass filters, the more the better - but unlike a traditional phaser, sweep the filters at different rates to each other, not all in sync. also give it stereo out, and pan the filters to fill the stereo space nicely.
testing out the theory in software, using multiple instances of ReaEQ and Renoise's automation LFOs to simulate the effect, to see if this is even vaguely worth pursuing. i think it could be.
also, trying to figure out the internal architecture of the KORG Berlin softsynth from the Korg Gadget plugin pack, i accidentally created a kind of weird overtone oscillator by varying LFO speed.
two playthroughs of a simple sequence, first without the effect applied, second with. (both with stereo multitap delay also applied.)

Fun facts with Mod Bubbles
//I don’t have much in the way of story today, so I’ll share with you some information about this blog’s creation
//You may already know that the primary inspiration for ASooT was Zero Escape, mostly the portrayal of time travel as entirely mental, but you wanna know another major inspiration?
//SCP-2003: The Preferred Option
//For anyone unfamiliar, The SCP Foundation is a writing project on wikidot centered on the titular organization, who collects, contains and categorizes anomalies that might pose a threat to humanity or at least the sense of normalcy on Earth, from weird people and creatures, to objects, locations, phenomena and even ideas.
//You might know some of the famous SCP’s, like The Sculpture (173), the Hard-to-Destroy reptile (682), The Plague Doctor (049) and the Shy Guy (096), but there are literally thousands of them out there.
//2003 is one of my personal favorites. It’s a time machine built by the Foundation to gauge future scenarios for humanity’s sustainability. It can send people forward in time, where they’ll arrive at a particular date and remain there for 15-38 weeks, or about 3-8 months, before spontaneously returning to their departure time in the same location they were in.
//The thing is, not only is 2003 imprecise and the data acquired not always completely reliable, actually using it is difficult. Animal and plant tissue are damaged by the process, aside from the central nervous system, so the Foundation has to put agents into the XX890-V LFO system.
//You know those quadrupedal robots built by Boston Dynamics? The ones that look really uncanny when they stumble? Yeah, they put peoples’ brains into those for these missions : P
//But beyond just that, 2003 was the first time I saw the usage of time travel with an actual energy requirement. It requires 3500 kilowatt-hours (the energy equivalent to running an air conditioner for about a year and a half) to send someone forward in time by seven months, although this relationship becomes unpredictable at higher energy levels
//That gave me the idea for time travel requiring energy to do the same here, hence why you can’t just hop back and forth to whatever times you may want to. Any sort of movement along time requires energy to move you along the axis
//To explain their system’s massive power usage, 2003 is located inside an undisclosed refinery in a classified public location, which is a reasonably effective cover
//If I can be a complete nerd, traveling backward in time would require an infinite amount of energy, since you’d be violating causality, but hey, anomalies are anomalies : P

"Just pick up a pencil."
I honestly disagree with this sentiment.
Let's start with the collateral damage.
There is generative art out there that isn't made through GANs or other similar methods. Reddit's r/generative is home to this kind, made without either lifted training data or a prompt-based workflow. Just math, computer wizardry, and human ingenuity. You can make beautiful fractals, flowing shapes, etc., and you can take as many liberties as you want. Yet this unrelated art form happens to share the name "generative."
Then there's procedural effects in 3D digital art, animation, VFX, and CAD. I see that form of randomness as no worse than the natural imperfections that result from a pencil or paintbrush.
Even stabilization tools on apps like ProCreate have come under fire.
People hear about "Photoshop's plagiarism algorithms" and think the whole app uses them, or that Gaussian blur algorithms use content from Google Images.
I think a lot of the "pick up a pencil" crowd are missing the point and vilifying all computer-aided art forms as soulless, or making points tangential to the overall AI debate.
I can follow the logic behind a lot of arguments over the collection of training data for "true" AI art made with GAN and stable diffusion-based models, or the skill level of prompt engineering. (But I don't agree with banning or shaming it at all, or even with the idea that it's wrong, as enforcing the copyright of images from a Google Search would inadvertently ban many memes, and stable diffusion is way more complicated than a simple collage)
But mathematical or random models, liberties left to the computer, and digital art in general, are unfairly vilified in the process.
It's okay to pick up a pencil. But you can pick up a stylus, pick up your finger and put it on whatever control is in reach, etc., or pick up your technical intuition in one way or another.
And I also would love to see more ML-based AI that gives an artist even more liberties, and that discloses, for example, what it was trained on (perhaps consensual algorithms or mass libraries of stock photography).
Hypothetically, not all "true" AI has to be based on prompt engineering, or use it as the sole means of calling up images – and prompt engineering can also be used for finer details, etc. Perhaps as a way of generating the textures of 3D polygon animation.
But the goalposts keep moving.
This AI was trained on images in the public domain/that the company has permission to use!
Well, did the artists know at the time?
Well, this AI was trained on images expressly submitted to us!
But still, you're enabling non-artists to make fake art!
How?
Well, all you're doing is typing in a paragraph!
But this system has more areas to type in what you want, not just a single box!
But still, writing isn't making art!
Okay, this system more closely resembles a drawing program that turns your basic sketches or lasso fills into whatever you want them to be – the composition is yours!
But that's too easy!
Okay, this system just uses a really good ML algo to imitate brush strokes of a paintbrush!
Well....
"Why can't we use computers to simplify the boring stuff instead of simplifying the fun stuff?"
I've heard this so many times... implying that making art with a computer isn't fun, or that using a computer to automate or randomize anything is an insult to those who "took the time."
A few people speaking about AI music seem to also criticize things like random LFOs, random note generators, etc., that influence the sound design or composition of a production in a random way, though still ultimately on the terms of the producer. It's still a craft of love, and a great way to make cool R2D2 sounds or glitchy percussion.
Or speak of live musicians as the victims of AI music – something that as an electronic musician, I've heard about my hobby in general. That quantizing and pitch correction, or any kind of post-modification of any performance, is dishonest or disrespectful to those who "took the time" to learn to "properly" play. As if music were a sport, not an artform with many ways of practice. That gridding things in or arranging stock samples (a term that has two meanings: either arranging single notes or adding stock loops, or even bits of other songs) is dishonest. A lot of people don't even know that you can program in original melodies in electronic music, or skip samples entirely and use geometric or electronically-generated waveforms.
As if we don't take the time to develop our sounds and mix and match a variety of nonstandard, yet technical, areas, even if we leave some stuff to the computer and/or a stock loop library (or not... I tend not to use the latter).
As if people making any kind of procedural medium on a computer are only doing it because they're inartistic.
As if someone's personal opinion that 3D art with procedural FX, generative mathematical art, the music of Trovarsi, or anything with some randomization is soulless... makes it so.
As if they could do better just sitting down at the tools of the "talentless hacks'" trade.
As if anyone can sit down and make anything on r/generative, or even use Photoshop's Generative Fill, effectively on the first go.
One friend of mine thought electronic music was talentless and unoriginal, and that it was all "soulless and sterile and made from stolen loops"... I offered her 10 minutes of time with my laptop and a pair of headphones... she didn't want to try it out...
Speaking of that, when GarageBand was first announced to the general public, Steve Jobs mostly focused on the stock loops, even though you could make your own loops, record performances all the way through, or just grid things in... or use third party plugins.
I can see a similar trend happening with ML-based AI.
People will take the time to make it, and people will find it worth their time to consume it.
The opposite of "electronic" isn't "real". This is the force of thunder, thought, magnetism, chemistry, and emotion itself.
The opposite of "computer" (adj.) isn't "human." Humans designed computers.
And a lot of more "computery" art and music is very appealing to me. Am I a robot? No, but I'm of the species that designed them, and can tell you first-hand that creativity is very... complicated. Not that I don't think we should have it, but that it's ultimately in the eye of the beholder.
You didn't plan out each imperfection of your pencil line.
Nor each variation in harmonic overtone content or waveform each time you slap your bass.
Nor were you the first to draw a person, photograph the LA River, or tap out a clave rhythm.
Nor do comic book artists generally spend the same time on a single frame as a realist painter does on a whole painting... but that just lets them make more and create a whole new art form. And some comic book artists do slave away on each detail – or draw stick figures and still make effective comics. Or just take pictures for a photo comic. Or use stabilization. Or generative (mathematical) backgrounds.
Not too long ago, calculators were controversial in STEM classrooms. Now, many classes outright require them.
Not too long ago, spell check was lamented by English teachers. Now, many will outright encourage its use in typed essays, or have students do assignments on Canvas with it turned on.
The general attitude for using Wikipedia for research has evolved from "never use" to "use with skepticism and don't cite directly for school, but it's a great 'springboard' to find more info".
And typing has pretty much replaced cursive's role in high schools.
It's all how you look at it.
I will not be convinced that my computer is evil or unhealthy.

Cherry Audio has released Harmonia, and I love it!
Tumblr media
Cherry Audio has released Harmonia, a versatile synthesizer that can create evolving polyphonic sounds reminiscent of vector and wave sequencer synths from the 80s and 90s.
The instrument features two sample-based oscillators, interpolated harmonic scanning, and a powerful modulation matrix.

Harmonia is a unique sample-based synth designed to give sound designers rich and evolving polyphonic sounds associated with vector and wave sequencer synthesizers from the 80s and 90s. The synth boasts two sample-based oscillators that use mostly stereo samples taken from a range of synths, instruments, voices, lo-fi sounds, and other sources. Each oscillator uses a technique called 'interpolated harmonic scanning' to generate up to eight individual pitches at the same time, which can be tuned either using semitones or a harmonic series.
The synth's parameters are laid out clearly, and there's relatively little menu-diving to be done. Each oscillator's section has a display that shows these eight pitches, and you can alter each pitch using its unique knob. You can also move between them using the Center slider under each display, as well as changing their level sliders. Each oscillator has an octave and detune control, as well as a variety of presets for both semitone or harmonic setups that dial in a ready-made setup.
With 285 waveforms to choose from, as well as the option to import and store your own, the selection of sounds on offer is more or less infinite. Things go to the next level when you start to leverage the powerful modulation matrix, which is able to route modulator signals between any of 19 sources and 80 destinations. This enables you to start animating sounds and creating sequences. By calling up any of the sequence patches from the presets, you'll see how sources have been routed to parameters like the Center slider (to dynamically choose new pitches), effects settings and more.

Harmonia can operate in monophonic or polyphonic mode with up to 16 voices. There's also a lot more sound shaping available, including a multimode filter, amp and filter envelope sections, and a master limiter. The impressive effects section features distortion, modulated delays, echo and reverb, each with their own controls and effect types for you to choose from. Performance controls, including bend depth and note glide, further add to the expressive options available to you.
The instrument is geared largely towards generating harmonic variations, with powerful tuning options that mean you can create all manner of multi-tuned patches, blending and morphing them to create truly organic results and rich sounds. The ability to play and change these in real-time also makes it quite special, fun, creative, and reactive to your input.
Harmonia is a very capable sound design tool used across various musical genres, especially for creating sequences. Whether they're simple or complex, the combination of LFO-triggered sequences, the multitude of pitches on offer, and the excellent onboard effects provide excellent results. Love it!❤️ Go and get your Harmonia at Cherry Audio.

Title: Let There Be Light
Artist: Justice
youtube
Nearly 5 years ago, I started trying to make music. I was using Reaper on my laptop, listening through whatever $20 headphones I had at the time, and I started looking for plugins, because the aspect of music that I was clearly lacking was instruments. Not skill, experience, practice, or ability to play an instrument, no, it was the lack of sounds that was my primary issue. And, to be fair, it was an issue; one does need a source of sound to shape it into a song. Regardless, in my hunt for plugins, I managed to collect some odd ones that, looking back, were not ideal for someone so fresh to music production. One such plugin was the Deputy Mark II by Full Bucket Music. Built to evoke and emulate early polyphonic synthesizers, the Deputy is not particularly friendly to someone who doesn't know what a VCO, VCA, or VCF are, and who won't learn what an LFO actually is for another 6 months or so. Even still, I persisted in using it, relying heavily on the collection of presets that came with it, one of which was called Distorted Tiger. This preset was the nastiest, crunchiest, ugliest sound you could expect a computer to make while still calling it musical. Harmonizing was even worse, since each note peaked so hard that they tried to drown each other out. But I loved this wretched little sound box, and I toyed with it until I had made my first song. Was it good? No. Musical? Yes, although rather uninspired and flat. But that song, and that preset, hold a special place in my heart, because I had seen this idea through from before I had ever touched a DAW to being able to listen to an MP3 that I had crafted. And Let There Be Light by Justice uses a synth that is disconcertingly similar to the one I still reflect on five years later. This song is everything I wanted my first song to be, and more. It is uncompromising, it is fierce, it is loud, and it will be heard. It does not care if you think it's grating and severe. It is gorgeous and pounding and smooth and sharp and fascinating. It's if Daft Punk were inspired by The Animals instead of George Clinton. It's if Ratatat wanted to make people dance. It's harsh, it's dark, and it's fantastic.

The Bitwig Studio 4.2 beta is available for download now, and it's available to anyone with an active Bitwig Studio Upgrade Plan. The change-log and release notes are here.
And when generating notes with a module like Probabilities, it just made sense to add a Confidence output.
Since Note Grid can sort signals into 16 MIDI channels, the new Channel-16 modulator helps you use those groupings on any instrument or plug-in.
A new Anti-aliasing option for most Grid Shaper modules.
New mini views for the Oscilloscope and Spectrum devices.
New Note Grid module adds to Bitwig 4 generated and modulated notes.īitwig 4.2 has some been equipped with further updates. Chorus+ Characters CE - A synth-style chorus DD - Subtle, 80s style chorus 8v - Eight voices with plenty of feedback x2 - Classic voice doubling circuit Flanger+ Characters DP - Digital, aggressive flanger MX - Emulation of a pedal-style classic TFX - Smooth sound yet with some edge WA - Stronger flanger flavour Phaser+ Characters GS - The spiky one EHx - Classy and smooth phaser MX - A raspy beast MF - Pleasantly greasy and deep By mixing and matching LFOs, step sequencers, and any of Bitwig’s 38 modulator devices, you can animate the default algorithms and make them your own. Each device can be switched into four characters, similar to different eras of vintage studio hardware. Three new devices - Chorus+, Flanger+, Phaser+ - have been added to Bitwig 4.2.
Note Grid: Note processing and generation unit that seamlessly plugs into Bitwig's modular environment, The Grid.
Audio FX: Three new effect modules, chorus, flanger and phaser.
Using the individual and group step selector knobs, you can choose what snippet of the sample to assign to each step or step group (downbeat kick, offbeat hat, clap and the 4 weak beats).
