the line in the epilogue i keep thinking about (which is saying a lot bc i haven’t stopped thinking about the entire epilogue since i read it) is:

“i didn’t want to let them in, her and peeta, but the walls of person’s heart are not impregnable, not if they have ever known love.”

the admission that he didn’t want to let them in… how many times did he have this thought over the years, i wonder. were there years when it was easier? because he was too drunk and/or hungover to hardly even notice the kids. or years where they were extra difficult or stubborn and he didn’t have the patience and he had the horrible, horrible thought of ‘good riddance.’ were there years when it was really hard, not to crack? when there were little girls who looked like louella with their dark braids, or little boys who smiled like sid used to. years when he thought, despite all the evidence in years past, ‘maybe, maybe this one has a chance,’ only for that hope to get ripped away from him again.

thinking about how numb and hopeless he felt, how he was drowning in booze and his own endless grief before katniss and peeta came along. and when they did, he told himself it would be just like all the years before. like every miserable birthday he’s had before since the day he was born. they would die and he would be alone and the cycle would begin again, over and over and over.

except peeta slaps his glass out his hand and katniss drives a blade between his fingers and that forbidden spark of hope flickers in him again, that ‘maybe. maybe this time…’

but that hope has been killed before, so he tries to smother it before it can catch flame. except peeta and katniss are stubborn, and they start to wiggle their way into his heart, against his best wishes. and it’s definitely partly because of who katniss and peeta are. but maybe it’s also a little bit because he’s tired and he’s been alone for so long, and maybe he doesn’t try as hard to push them out, push them away, so it’s a bit easier for them to get in.

as he says: no person’s walls are impregnable, not if they have ever known love.

and isn’t that what it’s really about? haymitch, who lost almost everyone close to him—his mother and brother, lenore dove, louella and lou lou and maysilee and wyatt. and then was forced to push everyone else away, so they weren’t killed too. haymitch who, because of snow and the capitol, was forced to be alone for so long. who had to spend his birthdays watching two more kids from his home get picked to die. two more faces every year to haunt his nightmares.

but despite—or, rather, in spite of—everything he went through, haymitch knew love. he knew the love of his family, of his friends. of his sis, maysilee. of his sweetheart, louella. of his love, lenore dove. love kept him going. love let him open his heart again to katniss and peeta.

haymitch was so loved, and he loved deeply, in return. and i think that makes it really special that the last line of the book is about love, “‘i love you like all-fire, too.’”
