2024 fandom review!

lets pretend we're not almost two weeks into the new year ok? and what a year it has been. holy shit.

~ Fics written ~

I'll be honest I did go a little batshit crazy this past year. 314k words across 19 published works, plus god knows how much more unpublished on tumblr. listen, I was deep in the ??? phase of my master's (still am, lets be honest) and desperately looking for a new creative outlet. I've always been a writer, always loved dreaming up stories, but I have never quite connected to a universe as much as I have to this one. I resonate with so many of the characters, and i just feel like there is so much room to play and explore. i will continue to add in old people OCs to my fics wherever and whenever i get the chance.

First fic: for the tree's sake (M, 48k) aka tree boys inspired by the trip that eventually led to my discover of young royals in late '23, and my darling baby. yes, that airplane ride that seems weird and random is based on truth!

Fav fic: just if for a minute (T, 53k) aka fake married idiots i greatly enjoyed making Wille suffer for just under 53k. that confrontation scene took days off my life and yet i am so proud of how it turned out.

Honorary mention to Growing towards the light, which was a dream to work on and create with my dear sweet friend Lia. there is one braincell between the two of us and it's full of nature facts and dick jokes. and beautiful stories about getting lost in the wilderness and finding yourself along the way. and tent-dick jokes.

Last fic: Wille på Hyllan (T, 13k) aka christmas shenanigans! another collab with my dearest friends which was hilarious to write and so silly and imo an example of one of the greatest perks of being in a fandom: meeting some of the most incredible people ever. also, dick-lights and dick-tomtar and dick-cookies. what more could you want?

if i tried to go through my history and tell you how many fics i read this year i would never make this post. i'd be here counting and trying to copy links forever. i read hundreds of fics. i enjoyed all of them, thoroughly. i got a lot better at leaving comments (sometimes). i was consistently and repeatedly blown away by the genius brains we have in this little Swedish corner of the internet.

What if Mihawk gets a bad review on one of his novels because the lover/Y/N/Reader is not very relatable to the general public?

I genuinely believe he would not give one single fuck if his characters were relatable. He'd probably use his marine connections to sniff out the reviewer just to send a letter back calmly detailing exactly why they are wrong, and they simply just do not have good sex and so would not be able to judge it accurately. and then he'd tell them thta if they don't relate to the reader they should simply be better

If he was being constantly trolled or the authors of his favorite novels mentioned they were being hate stalked, he'd probably show up to a few houses.

Life Series Merch Drop Review: ★★☆☆☆

This is a review of the second Life Series merch drop snail shirt.

Firstly, the shirt is not as high quality OR the same brand as the first merch drop last year. (Last year’s drop were Los Angeles Apparel 1801 shirts, which are very high quality imo.) It is a 100% cotton Comfort Colors T-shirt, and the fabric is also significantly thinner.

(To be honest, I would not have ordered any shirts from this merch drop if I had not thought it would be the same shirt as last time.)

Secondly and more importantly, some speculation on profit distribution. I’m sure many people noticed, as I did, that the last merch drop was promoted equally by all life series members, whereas this time Grian seems to be doing most of the promoting, with the website being branded primarily towards him.

There’s no explanation for profit distribution for most of the products on the site—see the T-shirt description above—with the notable exception of the individual snail stickers, which each specify that their profits will go to that individual life series member:

(This is probably why the individual snail stickers are priced so highly, at $5.20 for a single sticker. Compare this to the multipack, which includes smaller versions of every single snail sticker for only $12.)

The multipack specifies that its profits will be used towards cost of production, with leftovers split equally between all Life series members. By implication, these descriptions seem to suggest that the profits of all other products on the site go neither towards the cost of production, nor are split equally between all LIFE members.

It's maybe unfair to say that Grian hasn't been transparent about the profit distribution of this LIFE merch drop—after all, it's branded towards him, and he is the only one promoting it. I also don't want to minimize his role as the organizer of the series, especially during Wild Life, which seems to have had the most behind-the-scenes work out of all of the Life seasons, by far. (I'll also reiterate that much of this is speculation, even if it is well-founded in my opinion.)

But a major part of what I liked about the first Life Series merch drop was the collaboration between creators, and the way that it seemed like they all reaped the benefits of it. So the way that this merch drop seems to be run definitely rubs me the wrong way.

But if you feel at all skeevy about the apparently unequal profit distribution, or if one of the things you liked about the previous Life series merch drop was the high-quality apparel, I recommend sitting this one out. 2/5 stars.
