My ★★★★ review of The Matrix Reloaded on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/4IrvXZ
It's quite funny how those two operator guys on The Vigilant got killed not because of the machines or Smith or anything like that, they just had a shit railing that collapsed. Even in the robo-pocalypse, there's no excuse for poor health & safety
Also costume designer Kym Barrett doesn't get nearly enough praise for those jumpers they wear in the real world. They look so snuggly

Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet (Baz Luhrmann, 1996) Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Pete Postlethwaite, Paul Sorvino, Brian Dennehy, Paul Rudd, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Miriam Margolyes, M. Emmet Walsh, Diane Venora, Christina Pickles. Screenplay: Craig Pearce, Baz Luhrmann, based on a play by William Shakespeare. Cinematography: Donald McAlpine. Production design: Catherine Martin. Costume design: Kym Barrett. Roger Ebert hated it: "I have never seen anything remotely approaching the mess that this new punk version of Romeo & Juliet makes of Shakespeare's tragedy." But I kind of love it, and something tells me that Shakespeare would. After all, he wrote for a very mixed audience, ranging from people who admired lyric poetry to people who just wanted a little action, a little bawdry, and perhaps a good cry. Baz Luhrmann's version is Shakespeare for the multiplex. But Ebert makes a good point when he says "the movie lacks the nerve to cut entirely adrift from its literary roots." The problem with Romeo + Juliet (no, I don't know why the plus sign rather than "and" or ampersand) is Shakespeare: The text and the theatricality keep getting in the way of Luhrmann's cinematic impulses. He constantly has to work around the demands of Shakespeare's dialogue. Sometimes the workarounds are witty: I like the replacement of the prologue with a TV newscast, the change of the peacekeeping Prince Escalus to a cop called Capt. Prince (Vondie Curtis-Hall), even the placement of Paris (Paul Rudd) on the cover of Time as "Bachelor of the Year" -- though why wasn't he on People's cover as the "Sexiest Man Alive"? Even the change in weaponry is nicely handled: Obviously, contemporary gangbangers have to carry guns, and not the weapons specified in Shakespeare's dialogue, so instead of Colt and Glock, their guns have brand names like Sword, Dagger, and Rapier. There is also some wit in the performances: I particularly like the reimagining of Juliet's mother, whom Diane Venora plays as an aging trophy wife, not above doing a little flirting with Paris, her intended son-in-law. Harold Perrineau's portrayal of Mercutio as a drag queen also makes a good deal of sense, given the flamboyance of the character in the play. On the other hand, I don't know why we first see Pete Postlethwaite"s Father (not Friar) Laurence shirtless, delivering a botany lecture to some choir boys. Priestly pederasty was beginning to make headlines when the film was made, but a hint at Father Laurence's predilections doesn't seem relevant to his function in the story. On the whole, the film is best when it's full of action, drawing on the kind of energy that Luhrmann is known for, and it tends to sag in the love scenes. So maybe Romeo + Juliet is a mess, but it's an entertaining one -- and haven't we seen enough productions of the play that weren't?

ok hi. ive kinda lost interest in the movie SO
whatever the fuck the woman who did clothes for this movie's name is says THIS aboutthe part scene. "With Felix, there had to be a certain nonchalance – he doesn’t go full fancy dress, he just throws on jeans, a vest and a pair of wings. Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet was a key reference for us"
as opposed to <Kym Barrett3 talking about HER DRESS ALONE. "After reading the play, Barrett decided that Romeo and Juliet’s costumes should directly reference them as being an “angel” and a “knight,” respectively. But she also incorporated the “angel” line in a Phantom Thread-type of moment. “On Juliet’s dress, which I don’t think you can see, I printed written lines from the script in white. Romeo says in the script, ‘Oh, speak again, bright angel,’ which is why I dressed her as an angel, but I also printed that dialogue from that scene into her dress with white print,” explains Barrett. “I tried to do things for the actors that only they could see or have as their own thing. I thought that it would be an important kind of touchstone for them to have, things like pieces of jewelry and writing engraved on their guns, and in the Capulets’ case, it’s scriptures.”
like oh my god people see wings and immedialtely loose their minds but
the fashion designer for saltburn litterally admited she wanted more midsummar's night dream than romeo and juliet so that's a cool comparision but not really right tone wise
they're presented in such differnt contexts are you KIDDING ME? its ROMEO and juilete. they're a PAIR. when you think of the angle dress you think of the hand kiss. you think of the foutain. you think of them TOGETHER. you dont just think of opening scene with only her.
the point of the juliete thing is that she's innocent and pure and lovely, whereas i dont know whta the fuck felix is trrying to do
comparisoins only work if there's context. you cant just be like 'omg they both have wings'. bitch so do birds tf
winter
i am aware WHY the compare it
i am not saying they're RIGHT or that i support it
i have to finish this movie then i will explain
ok 😌

What was the story behind the Capulet party costumes? I feel like all of them give a little backstory to each of the characters.
In the script, [Romeo] says, “Oh bright, bright, angel,” and I knew Catherine wanted Claire to be on the balcony, backlit and silhouetted with the twinkling fairy lights that look like stars. So I knew straight away what that was going to be. And then with Leonardo, he’s like Lancelot. He’s driven away from his own people, from everything he holds dear to him. It’s an echo of the knight in shining armor, only in this case, it doesn’t work out, of course. I wanted to have that duality of it being one of the greatest romances in the world, but also one of the most tragic. I didn’t want to bang people over the head with didactic imagery, but I did want there to be a subconscious connection to stories and myths. The ballroom party is populated with characters from Shakespeare: Lord Capulet is a Roman emperor and Lady Capulet is Cleopatra. Then Paul Rudd as Paris is a bit on the outside, and a bit of a space cadet, so an astronaut felt right. I always thought of him as floating out a bit beyond reality.
