My Concert History: Foo Fighters UPDATED
Periodically I do a rundown of my concert history of seeing a particular artist. In 2018, I did my concert history of Foo Fighters, but since then I actually need to update the list. Timing couldn't be better with their show at Fenway Park tomorrow, which I'll be at...and have to update this list again! Here now is the update concert history since that 2018 history was published:
- WBCN River Rave 6/8/1997 @ Great Woods (Mansfield, MA)
I didn’t catch any of Foo Fighters’ shows in 1995-96, but I wasn’t going to miss out when The Colour and the Shape was released. Taylor Hawkins had just joined the band, and it was a few months before Pat Smear left the band. The WBCN River Rave also featured Matthew Sweet, Morphine, Fiona Apple, Porno for Pyros, Primus, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, and Moby just to name a few. Their set was mostly the songs off the first 2 albums. One of the highlights of the festival!
- HMV Records 11/1/1999 @ HMV (New York, NY)
Me meeting Dave Grohl at their HMV in-store
Chris Shiflett had just joined the band. When There is Nothing Left to Lose was released, they did promotional blitz in NYC that included an in-store appearance at HMV. My ex-GF and I traveled down from MA to NYC for this. The band performed for about 40 min. mostly off the new album. Then the band signed copies of the new album and I got to meet them (read all about it here).
- WBCN Xmas Rave 12/1/1999 @ Orpheum Theater (Boston, MA)
Only a month after I got to meet the band, I saw them at the WBCN Xmas Rave, which also featured At the Drive-In and Ben Harper. They played about 13 songs, mostly hits and new album. Great show!
- 4/2/2000 @ Mullins Center (Amherst, MA)
They co-headlined a tour with Red Hot Chili Peppers (my first time seeing RHCP) with opening act Muse. Drove out to UMass Amherst to see this show. It was really cool to see the Foo Fighters in a much bigger venue, a preview of some of the arenas I’d see them in later. RHCP drummer Chad Smith came out and joined them on a second drum kit for “My Hero”.
- 7/3/2003 @ Hammerstein Ballroom (New York, NY)
Even though the band in retrospect isn’t a fan of their 2002 album One By One, its one of my favorites. Promoting the album, the band played 2 shows at Hammerstein with openers My Morning Jacket and Pete Yorn. They did quite a bit of the One By One album and during “Everlong”, a fan apparently proposed during that song!?!
- Fuse TV Special 6/14/2005 @ Fuse TV studios (New York, NY)
Technically this is not a concert I saw, but I’ll explain why it made the list. I was working at the music video cable TV channel Fuse in 2005 just as the double album In Your Honor had been released. The band was doing a promotional blitz in NYC and stopped by Fuse to do a live performance 7th Avenue Drop show. I tried to go down to see them, but even as an employee and knowing so many people, I wasn’t able to go to the studio due to the capacity limit. But my friend who was working there, managed to get Dave Grohl’s guitar pick for me! Hence it being listed here even though it wasn't an official show I saw.
- 10/14/2005 @ Continental Airlines Arena (Rutherford, NJ)
My girlfriend (who became my wife) and two friends made the trek to NJ to see this co-headlining tour with Weezer and opening act Hot Hot Heat. This was a fantastic show, but the big highlight of the night was when they brought out special guest Roger Taylor of Queen, who played drums on the cover of “Tie Your Mother Down”, which Taylor Hawkins sang on. So much for “Never Meet Your Idols”!
- 8/21/2006 @ Beacon Theater (New York, NY)
In 2006 they went on an intimate acoustic tour of theaters. I went to the Beacon Theater show with Frank Black (of The Pixies) opening. Further musicians they brought on this tour included Rami Jaffee (who became an official member in 2017), Petra Haden, Drew Hester and returning Foo Fighter Pat Smear, who officially returned as a member in 2010. It was almost like an episode of Storytellers as Dave Grohl talked about some of the songs and their meaning. Very special show!
- 2/19/2008 @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
After the release of Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace, the band began playing much larger venues. At this MSG show, Serj Tankian (of System of a Down) and Against Me! opened. Some of the additional musicians who played the 2006 acoustic tour came out for an acoustic section of the show that included the very first Triangle solo in MSG history from their percussionist.
- 11/13/2011 @ Madison Square Garden (New York, NY)
By the time of 2011′s album Wasting Light, Pat Smear was back as an official band member. For their NYC show at MSG, the openers were The Joy Formidable and Social Distortion. They brought out a few special guests: Bob Mould of Husker Du played on “Dear Rosemary” and “Breakdown” (the Tom Petty song); and Joan Jett came out and did her song “Bad Reputation” with the band. The band also did Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh”.
- 7/19/2015 @ Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
Obligatory concert selfie of me and my friend Tim with Foo Fighters behind us!
After the 2014 album and HBO series Sonic Highways, I hoped Boston would be an upcoming episode / recording. While on tour to promote the album, just a few weeks earlier, Dave Grohl broke his leg onstage, so for the remainder of the tour he performed on a throne. Even if he was sitting the whole time, it was one hell of a show (read my concert review here). Openers were Royal Blood and Dropkick Murphys. Highlights of the show included Grohl’s surgeon Dr. Lew Schon, who came out and sang The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” with the band; a brief cover of The Cars’ “Let’s Go”; a cover of Queen and David Bowie’s “Under Pressure”, and Godsmack’s Sully Erna joining for Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out”.
7/21/2018 @ Fenway Park (Boston, MA)
my friend Ron, Wally the Green Monster and me at Fenway Park
Taylor Hawkins onstage with Foo Fighters
My second time seeing them at Fenway Park, but this show was very special because I won a contest and got tickets to the show and got to stay at the nearby Verb Hotel and also earlier in the weekend I got to see Foo Fighters guitarist Chris Shiflett doing a solo show at City Winery. I wish I could have this experience more often to get to see a musician in a small intimate setting and then see them rock out in a stadium with a band (read my concert review here). My buddy Ron came up and we had a great time! Openers included Boston's The Monsieurs (who I interviewed earlier in the month) and UK's The Struts. Highlights of this show included a cover of Queen and David Bowie's "Under Pressure" with Taylor Hawkins singing along with The Struts singer Luke Spiller, the band doing a cover of John Lennon's "Imagine" musically while singing Van Halen's "Jump" along with producer Greg Kurstin on piano, and Grohl's daughter Violet (12 at the time) on back-up vocals. Looking back it was one of the best Taylor Hawkins' performances as he also did a drum solo.
Boston Calling 5/23/2023 @ Harvard Athletic Complex (Boston, MA)
Foo Fighters on stage
me in my happy place: watching Foo Fighters
I attended Day of the 2023 Boston Calling festival (read my review here). Foo Fighters' headlined that night of the festival. This was a little over a year after the passing of Taylor Hawkins and only a week after they announced new drummer Josh Freese. Much of this show was about the band breaking in Josh but remembering Taylor. They paid tribute to Taylor with Dave singing “Cold Day in the Sun” (which Taylor sang) and to my surprise they performed “Aurora” because it was Taylor’s favorite Foo Fighter song (I haven’t seen them do that song live since 2003). For “Shame, Shame”, Dave introduced his 17 year-old daughter Violet. The highlight of the night (that got national attention from numerous news and music outlets) was Taylor’s 17 year-old son Shane guest drumming on “This is a Call”.
Me just hanging out with Mr. Chris Shiflett in 2018
In addition to all of these shows I recounted, I also saw Dave Grohl with Them Crooked Vultures in 2009, Taylor Hawkins with the Coattail Riders in 2006 and 2010, and Chris Shiflett in 2018.
After I see tomorrow's show I'll have to update this concert history!

Sometimes you can be quite surprised over the names you can find on a multitude of lists that mention the musicians who have the elder statesmen status now. Yes, everyone can become this, including a number of alternative musicians who probably didn't think they would still be currently doing this. I mean, sure, Beck didn't seem to flow that way, since his 90's works have a certain I-don't-give-a-shit vibe, which resulted in a lot of incredible tunes. So what happened to him after the 90's? Tough to say, though I believe he ended up being a victim of his own success. His current LPs do find him in a possession of the elements that made him great, yet he tries to put them together in the old ways. No, he should attempt to do something else, he is capable of that.

👻 What is your wildest headcanon?
Okay, so, this started as a joke, but ngl these days I pretend it's real (in Gorillaz-verse that is, not IRL) because I think it spices things up specifically for me and like, three other people lmao.
So, you know how a significant portion of Gorillaz fans have beef with one of their main producers, Greg Kurstin? Well, in Gorillaz-verse, I hc that it's actually Greg Succession who's their producer, who everyone blames for making Gorillaz sound "too mainstream pop" or w/e. It's his second career after getting laid off by Waystar, and he uses half-psuedonym to evade cancellation that would inevitably come if the public were to realize his past association with an evil, right-wing corporation. This hc has legs because Greg's actor, Nicholas Braun, has a music career of his own, and I believe Jamie follows him on instragram. So, theoretically, he could absolutely have a Gorillaz-verse alter-ego.

𝚆𝚘𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚏𝚞𝚕 𝙸 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚕𝚍 𝚌𝚛𝚢: 😭
When all's said and done, you'll get what you gave
We feel the same feelings
Breathe the same air
And all your precious colours will bleed into black
No visionary light
To guide the way back
Now, our moments come, I'll shiver your spine
Your pleasure is mine
We can heal together
I'll ride that wave to freedom on the warmth of your tongue
Sink into your body
The damage is done
Can you feel us now?
Can you hear us now?
We're back
To hunt you forever
True love
Will never leave you
Alone
We're back
To hunt you forever
True love
Will never leave you alone
Open wide your mind and let it all in
Only fear is a sin
So don't believe them
There's no room for doubt
Accept the unknown
Life in its full glory
Has no room for seeking
So are you fearless now?
We're back
To hunt you forever
True love
Will never leave you
Alone
We're back
To hunt you forever
True love
Will never leave you alone

Release: July 5, 2013
Lyrics:
We, we don't have to worry 'bout nothing
'Cause we got the fire, and we're burning one hell of a something
They, they're gonna see us from outer space, outer space
Light it up, like we're the stars of the human race, human race
When the lights started out, they don't know what they heard
Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world
We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky
'Cause we got that fire, fire, fire
Yeah, we got that fire, fire, fire
And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We don't wanna leave, no
We just wanna be right now
Right, ri-ri-right now
And what we see, is everybody's on the floor
Acting crazy, getting loco till the light's out
Music's on, I'm waking up
We start the fire, then we burn it up
And it's over now, we got the love
There's no sleeping now
No sleeping now
When the lights started out, they don't know what they heard
Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world
We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky
'Cause we got that fire, fire, fire
Yeah, we got that fire, fire, fire
And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
When the lights started out, they don't know what they heard
Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn (ooh)
Burn, burn, burn, burn, burn, burn (ooh)
We can light it up, up, up
So they can't put it out, out, out
We can light it up, up, up
So they can't put it out, out, out
We can light it up, up, up
So they can't put it out, out, out
We can light it up, up, up
So they can't put it out, out, out
When the lights started out, they don't know what they heard
Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world
We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky
'Cause we got that fire, fire, fire
Yeah, we got that fire, fire, fire
And we gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
Gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn
And we gonna let it burn
When the lights started out, they don't know what they heard
Strike the match, play it loud, giving love to the world
We'll be raising our hands, shining up to the sky

The Black Keys have released a new single, "Beautiful People (Stay High)," and announced their twelfth studio album, Ohio Players, due April 5. You can hear the song and pre-order the album now here.
Ohio Players—a title inspired by the legendary Dayton, Ohio, funk band of the same name—features several collaborations between band mates Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney with various friends and colleagues, like Dan “The Automator” Nakamura, Beck, Noel Gallagher, Greg Kurstin, and others. “We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music,’" Carney says. Auerbach adds, “No matter who we work with, it never feels like we're sacrificing who we are. It only feels like it adds some special flavor ... But when it came time to finish the album, it was just Pat and me.”

"Jack Black's voicing bowser" this, "Jack Black's going to voice bowser in the Mario movie omg" that. I'm excited to see the Chris Pratt movie too, but LEST we forget that him getting announced as bowser wasn't the best thing involving Jack Black in 2022.
Him absolutely obliterating "Spirit of Radio" by Rush with the amazing music producer Greg Kurstin, and the stupidly tallented Dave Grhol from Foo Fighters during the Hanukkah sessions was. This one wins.

Seriously, Jacky-boy's got some real talent in the music business, too. Go listen to some of his other music stuff it's all good.

Her collaborators noticed a change instantly. “We had anger, we had sadness, we had flirtation, we had sexy, and now we’re madly in love,” Tranter said. Stefani described the shift with one of her frequently used terms — “crazy!” — and added, “Never in my wildest, craziest dreams would I ever have seen this coming.”
Stefani, unguarded and reflective, spoke quickly in torrents of words, pausing only to sip tea from a cup that, like most of her décor, was black and white. She thought back to her childhood in Anaheim, California, where she presumed she’d one day lead a happy family like the one her parents had built. “I literally was so sheltered and naïve, and that’s a lot why I think I got myself into so much trouble, in a way,” she said. She lamented that because of her split from Rossdale, she now has her sons 50 per cent of the time. “It’s like, the most unjust, unbelievable system,” she said, adding that the “blessing” in it was she had time to heal and write. Atop her work table sat a book of photos from her youngest son’s first year, two pairs of sunglasses, her journal and a tin of Dr Martens Wonder Balsam.
Sessions for the band’s first album in 11 years, Push and Shove, followed, and Stefani wasn’t brimming with ideas. “The LP failed to take off commercially, and when the band returned to the studio — this time with collaborators including Sia, Greg Kurstin and Williams — Stefani got pregnant for a third time. “That’s when I started to really find my faith again,” she said. “It’s like a miracle, at my age.”
Weeks after giving birth to Apollo, the offer to become a coach on The Voice arrived, and Stefani found herself relishing her new role as mentor. “I needed so badly to do something different, and I needed so badly to be in a different role, a giving role.” Freshly inspired, she felt the urge to make music and mulled a solo album. “I started to think, well, I’ll just curate a record, and I’ll do it like every other pop girl does.”
This was the first time Stefani had dipped a toe into the new pop economy, where ace songwriters for hire shop tracks from artist to artist. “Every song that people would write for me felt like me 12 years ago, me 10 years ago. And lyrically they could never touch my heart, ever.” She recorded a full album, but decided to shelve it once sessions for Truth took off.
Considering how much the pop landscape has changed in a decade, Stefani is incredulous about her ability to continue recording. “I don’t even understand how I could possibly have had this long a career, or a career at all,” she said. “And that anyone cares, and that I’m relevant or anything, it just blows my mind.”
Tranter said Stefani’s sweetness and humility aren’t put-on. “At first I thought she was just being polite,” he said. “And then I was like, oh, she actually doesn’t realise the lives that she’s changed. She has no clue.” Describing Stefani’s appeal as “that amazing combination of extreme fabulousness and extreme honesty,” he noted the 1995 No Doubt album Tragic Kingdom “defined one whole era of music, and then she did it again as a solo artist, which is very rare.”
Janick said the longevity of Stefani’s career is one reason the label is confident in her new album’s viability. “Obviously there’s a lot of people that have grown up with Gwen over the years. Her being on The Voice, what she does in fashion, she’s all over all the magazines. You can say it’s a grown-up pop record, but I feel like it touches on all different things that people can relate to of all different ages and sexes.”
Stefani, who sometimes reminds herself “Wow, I did do that! I wrote those songs!” to boost her own confidence, said singing about being happy is “so fresh” to her. “I needed something new to happen. And not just in my career, in my life. Something had to change.

Walking Dead (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
Inspiration can come from surprising places. In the music video for Sia's 2016 song "The Greatest", a group of children dance their way through the rooms and hallways of what looks like a detention center, doing moves that are sometimes bizarre or even jarring against the tone of the melody. The opening scene of The Walking Dead television adaptation follows a disoriented man waking up in a ransacked hospital and stumbling his way toward the ongoing zombie apocalypse outside. PattyCake combined those two images, mashed up their accompanying music, and created something simultaneously entertaining and unsettling.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals – The Walking Dead
performers: Ryan Simpson (Rick Grimes); Kaley Kolb (zombie kid)
original songs / performers: "Theme from The Walking Dead" by Bear McCreary & session musicians; "The Greatest" by Sia
written by: "Theme from The Walking Dead" by Bear McCreary, Edward Trybek, & Henri Wilkinson; "The Greatest" by Sia Furler, Greg Kurstin, Kendrick Lamar, & Blair MacKichan
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 11 February 2017
My favorite bits:
opening with the frantic strings from the TV theme
the little cries in Ryan's voice as though he's trying to convince himself of the truth in his words
finally adding vocal harmonies on the defiant ♫ "No no no!" ♫
Ryan wandering the halls in a way that echoes both the Walking Dead pilot and the Sia video
the breath between ♫ "the greatest" ♫ and ♫ "alive" ♫ that almost separates them into two distinct thoughts
those quiet music box tones evoking childhood even before we see the little girl
Kaley lurching along in bunny slippers with a teddy bear, like the scene in the show's first episode
good stunt fall, kiddo!
instagram
Trivia:
○ Ryan was a member of the band Tigerweather, whose first EP Layne had produced at his Rayne's Room studio. He had also briefly stepped into 4:2:Five's vacant spot for their three-song "December EP" in 2011 after baritone Ryan Reed had left the group.
○ This project was even more of a family affair than usual with:
Layne's step-daughter Kaley playing the zombie kid
her older sister Annesley credited as assistant editor / grip
his wife Cyndi being given "special thanks" (presumably for letting her middle schooler get zombified)
additional "special thanks" to Dr. Charles Stein (I'm guessing for advice about the medical stuff.)
Tony 's mom Anita serving as production manager
and Kailey Simpson as production assistant
○ Kaley had previously played Dani in PattyCake's "Hocus Heathens" video. She and her sisters also briefly appeared as the Lullabye League in the opening section of PattyCake's "Will.of.Oz" video.
○ Kaley's zombie makeup, the grasping hand's makeup, and the mangled corpse were handled by Jonathan Shane Ferrell of Makeup and Creative Arts in Orlando. He had previously worked on, and appeared on screen in, the "Will.of.Oz" video.
○ Layne and Tony had previously performed David Guetta & Sia's "Titanium" as part of VoicePlay's live shows, and recorded a video with Rachel Potter for their arrangement of Sia's "Chandelier".
○ The filming location for this video was Broward Correctional Institution, a former women's maximum security prison in southeatern Florida that had been decomissioned five years prior.
○ The guys posted a behind the scenes look at part of the building they were filming in. (Layne does use some unfortunate language to describe the former prisoners, though. 😞)

Top Albums of 2023
Hey, how ya doing? I got sick the last week of 2023 when I intended to write this so here I am in 2024 looking back on some of my favorite long players last year.
I saw so many of my favorite acts in 2023, it was probably the best live music year ever. So much so I spent what felt like a whole morning creating a "reel" on "instagram". The fruits of which you can watch here.
Enough about live music though, this is about wonderful studio recordings, so here's what's made the long list and then we'll kick straight into the top 10 with accompanying videos.
16 - Romy - Mid Air
15- Jessie Ware - That! Feels! Good!
14- Gracie Abrams - Good Riddance
13 - Lana Del Rey - Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd?
12 - Bombay Bicycle Club - My Big Day
11 - The Bug Club - Rare Birds: Hour of Song
10 - Young Fathers - Heavy Heavy
If you haven't seen Young Fathers Glastonbury set in 2023, I recommend you do so after you've read this blog. Gutted they cancelled their brooklyn show, but I hope to catch it this year.
youtube
9 - Caroline Polachek - Desire, I Want to Turn Into You
Caroline Polacheck is the closest we've got to Kate Bush in 2023, the detail she puts into her visuals and the choreography of her performances, its high art. The track below isn't on the album, but it was the moment I realized her brilliance.
youtube
8 - Gorillaz - Cracker Island
This felt like an under the radar release from Gorillaz, at least here in the states. It's the first time Albarn has worked with Greg Kurstin (Adele, Mccartney, Kendrick) and you can hear his influence as it's a bit more poppy than previous releases.
youtube
7 - Jeff Rosenstock - Hellmode
If you've read any of my blogs over the past decade you will have seen a lot of appearances from US Punk / Ska legend Jeff. The reason being; he doesn't make bad records.
youtube
6 - Sleaford Mods - UK Grim
How do you follow 2021's career highlight Spare Ribs? With more of the same, that's how. 12 albums in to their career now and they're still gathering pace. Blistering, acerbic, hilarious as ever.
youtube
5 - The Hives - The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons
The first new music from The Hives in 11 years and they return with a literal bang. This album is as good as anything they came out with when they first charmed their way onto the scene in the early 2000's. The bellies may be podgier, Pelle's kicks aren't as high, but the riffs are as spritely as ever. Still one of the greatest live bands around.
youtube
4 - Blur - Ballad of Darren
I always get a bit anxious about a new blur album, they don't have to release new music, they have a back catalog that guarantees them legend status already. Releasing new music risks tainting that legacy so far into their career. I needn't worry, Ballad of Darren is a beautiful record with a legitimate brand new stadium filling anthem to add to their repertoire.
youtube
3 - Olivia Rodrigo - GUTS
Bit of a surprise this one, maybe more for me than you dear reader. I didn't get the fuss of the first album (still don't) it sounded like any one of a million young pop darlings. But GUTS is different, it's eclectic, it's beautifully written, it tears at your heart, it raises your fists, it makes you dance. It has everything really. She's the real deal. It's objectively not made for a 42 year old man, but great music is great music and I bloody love this.

2 - Jenny Lewis - Joy'All
It was a tough call between this and Olivia, but i've given it to Jenny for the 20+ years experience she has on the young upstart. Jenny Lewis is maturing into a fine groove, she's replaced Ryan Adams as a much more palletable country-folk spot in my heart. Her songwriting continues to get better with age.

1 - The National - First Two Pages of Frankenstein | Laugh Track
Stadium filling, Taylor Swift collaborating, David Letterman approved super band The National. It's a wild trajectory my favorite band has taken over the last few years. No longer critically acclaimed everyones favorite unheard of band, they're rightly at the upper table of indie-rock and its fully deserved. Not satisfied with releasing one beautiful record this year they follow it up soon after with the surprise Laugh Track an equally brilliant album in its own right. Most bands would kill to have one record this good in their whole career, its frankly not fair they can do two this good in a year. A joint number one for me as I can't separate them.

There you have it, 2023 all wrapped up, full of BIG acts with a smattering of newbies thrown in for good measure and probably the most female representation I've had in an end of year list.
You can hear these and LOADS more in my 2023 playlist.
And if you like any of this and trust my judgement follow my 2024 playlist which I curate throughout the year adding newly released tracks.
Aaaaaand away...
