Holy guacamole... I did ceramics at university and the idea that ceramics are eco-friendly is hmmmmmmmmmmmm questionable at best.
I'm not a geologist so don't know the mystery of how clay is formed other than "it's rocks that were finely ground up by a river I think", but it has to be "harvested" from the wild. And as mentioned above, it's a non-renewable resource. That clay takes millenia to form. Mining it out can be devastating to the environment.
Let's talk about the kulhar chai cups from India. They are a form of low fired ceramic. Different ceramics are fired at different temperatures- earthenware clay is usually around 1080°c, and stoneware, porcelain, bone china all fire slightly higher. The high temperatures allow the clay to become vitrified, which means it's less porous and more like glass.
Kulhar are fired much lower- around 700°c- so they are porous and fairly weak. Traditionally they're used for tea sold at railway stations. When the tea is drunk, the cup is then thrown onto the tracks, breaking up to form loose ceramic chips, just like the gravel you usually see on tracks. It's non reactive and doesn't pollute like plastic.
So, why are single use ceramics like this a problem?
Clay extraction. That clay has to be mined from somewhere and shipped around. It's heavy!
Water use. Ceramics manufacturing uses a lot of water and can end up with random minerals flooding into local water sources and contaminating them.
Energy use. Getting a kiln even to 700°c takes a lot of energy. Your oven at home cooks food at around 180°c, and you probably know how much of a drain that is. In places like India, traditionally kilns were powered with organic fuels like wood or even dried cow dung; which produces a lot of air pollution. Modern kilns are fired with natural gas, a fossil fuel. Using this much energy to deliberately make something disposable is galling.
Waste disposal. The company OP cited say they have solved the problem of expensive recycling with their ceramics, but where is the thought put into the waste stream? What is supposed to happen to these cups? Are users just supposed to toss them onto modern day midden pits all over the place, or will they be put in bins and taken to landfill, another huge waste of energy as it's a heavy material in comparison with paper cups.
In conclusion- deliberately making single use ceramics is incredibly irresponsible
P.S be kind to your ceramic objects. It took a lot of energy and labour for them to get to you, and with care they can last hundreds of years.

You can just lie about anything and get VC funding in SF huh?????? This is like such a wild and UNTRUE spin on ceramics. By this metric plastic is also eco friendly since it is made from petroleum oil that comes from the ground. People will fall for this. Unbelievable

About the Kulhar Chai
Kulhar Chai (‘tea organized in clay pot’) is a tea beverage made by means of boiling black tea in milk and water with an aggregate of aromatic herbs and spices in clay pot.
Tumblr media
Originated in India the beverage has received international recognition, turning into a feature in many coffee and tea houses. Despite the fact that historically prepared as a decoration of green cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, floor cloves, ground ginger, and black peppercorn collectively with black tea leaves, retail variations encompass tea luggage for infusion, instant powdered mixtures, and concentrates. This is particular product because it is ready in clay pot giving it an earthy essence, flavor and perfume. It gives instantaneous fresh and aromatic effect at the thoughts of tea lovers.
