Jødene som ble deportert med D/S Donau kom først til Stettin, og ble derfra fraktet med tog til konsentrasjons- og utryddelsesleiren Auschwitz-Birkenau. Denne deportasjonen var den største av de i alt fem skipstransportene med jøder fra Norge. Til sammen ble 773 jøder deportert, de fleste i perioden november 1942 til februar 1943. Kun 38 overlevde.

Minnemarkeringen i Aulaen er et samarbeid mellom Det Mosaiske Trossamfund i Oslo, Det Jødiske Samfunn i Trondheim og Senter for studier av Holocaust og livssynsminoriteter, HL-senteret.

Royal Watching

I LOVE ROYAL WATCHING. So of course “den kongelige slott” (the royal castle/residence) here in Oslo was probably the number 1 destination on my list. The palace is at the end of Karl Johan’s Gate (the main shopping/expensive stuff street...don’t buy things there...unless you are a rich tourist that really wants a reindeer skin), and sits on top of a hill very majestic-like:

There it is, ft some people (this street is closed to cars). They started building this bad boy in 1825 and didn’t complete it until 1849, those determined little scandos. Anyways, the palace is the official residence of the king and queen of Norway, Konge Harald og Dronning Sonja. You might think it’s strange that such a progressive country has a royal family, but really the royals are just there for show...statsminister Erna Solberg calls all the shots and the royals are just there to look good, wave, and ski, and enjoy a remarkably high approval rating from de fleste av den norske folk.

The Norwegian royal family is very interesting for these reasons:

- Dronning Sonja is a commoner (borgerlig). Back when Harald wanted to marry Sonja, Harald’s dad was like “nei! you cannot marry that commoner!” but then Harald threatened to call the royal life quits unless he got his way, and so now we have Dronning Sonja av Norge.

- Not only is Mette Marit also a commoner, but when Haakon Magnus met her, she was a single mother to Marius. Why was Mette Marit a single mother, you ask? Because Marius’s pops was in the CLINK for DEALING DRUGS. At first this was a bit of an issue, but now all is well I guess (also how did a kronprins even meet a single mother who’s baby daddy was a drug dealer? I have questions).

- Mette Marit’s son, Marius, obviously has a weird role in the royal family, since he’s not actually...royal. So I guess they invite him to stuff to be polite but I guess he got tired of sitting at the randos table because shortly after his 20th birthday (quite recently), it was announced that he was quitting public life and moving to California. Kult.

- Mette Marit is a little crazy...she writes children’s books and believes in astrology and spirits and bs like that.

ANYWAYS, while at the royal palace, we saw all these cool guards with long feathers in their hats and big ol rifles! They even have a guard house and little posts to stand at. I thought it was pretty cool just seeing them stand there, UNTIL THEY STARTED THEIR LITTLE GUARD DANCE! Sadly I’m unable to post the video here, but there was a lot of heel tapping and gun twirling.

While the guards were dancing, the front doors to the palace opened. The guards quickly scurried back to their little posts and a bunch more guards came out of the guard house and stood around looking important. Then a car appeared in the giant hallway behind the doors and some people that looked like butlers stood around for awhile. AND THEN out came Haakon and Mette Marit! They got into their car and drove away waving with moderate fanfare (i.e. a band and some guarding, I bunch of police motorcycles, some sirens etc).

So that was my brush with fame for the day...pretty lit if I do say so myself.

After that bit of excitement, we needed to calm down a bit, so of course an art gallery is a natural choice to erase any thrill from your life. Also it was free Thursday at the National Gallery, so that was good because paying to look at painting is kind of a waste of money and all anyone wants to see any way is Munch’s famous “Scream”. But of course they make you walk through 17 different bs rooms before you finally get to room 18, which houses the Scream itself:

There it is.....screaming. A question I have for art galleries is how do they decide which paintings are really cool and worth $10 0000 0000000 and which ones are just garbage? Cause guess what? Half the paintings in that place looked the same but some were “good” and some were not. So I also have questions there. Very curious indeed.

Also they had a travelling graphic exhibit which included this famous af Warhol which was pretty neat:

But that’s about it. After that we went back to our airbnb and made food pretty much exclusively out of stuff left there by other people...shout out to you guys. Also, someone left a half jug of pure Canadian maple syrup...considering pawning that on the street as I’m sure it would be worth at least $65 here.
