Techno’s Voices are somewhat a side effect of his immortality. Phil gained immortality when he married Kristin, and when he met Techno and they became friends, Phil asked Kristin to make Techno immortal as well. Kristin agreed, but something got messed up in the process, and somehow Techno ended up with Voices in his head. Come to find out, said Voices are the souls of the damned. Pretty gnarly.

(by the way: I imagine the immortality thing is that Phil is actually fully immortal. He literally cannot die ever. Techno, however, is immortal in a more hunter of Artemis type way. He doesn’t age and he can’t die of old age, but he could die in battle. He’s just That Good At Fighting that it’s been centuries and he hasn’t died.)

She hung her head in her hands. “Oh yeah,” she told the bar top. “I mean, the mechs—they were originally designed to battle sculk anyways, and it’s not like anything bad happened to the people who built them, so we’ll be good.” “Oh yeah, all those ancient cities still goin’ strong today.” Techno ran a finger around the top of his glass. “Civilization standin’ strong overall. Whole situation went so well, I don’t give us more than a 50% chance of someone dyin’. Maybe 40% if we’re lucky.” “Oh god.” Kristin emerged from her hands laughing, and pushed her hair out of her face. “No worries, it’ll go great to go back there. We’ll all do great. Happy about this, actually.” Ponk came over with the bottle and refilled her glass, and she nodded to them. “Thanks.” “And if only one of us dies—” Techno grinned at her, tired. “Then the other person just has to deal with it. And that’s easy. I’m doing great.” “I’m doing great,” Kristin echoed, a little choked up. She straightened fully and looked down at her drink, turning the stem of the glass between her fingers. “I miss him.” She cleared her throat. “I miss my husband, Techno. I miss him a lot.”

Seven years ago, Wilbur Minecraft left his father’s home to make something of himself. Seven years later, Wilbur Soot walks into a home that is not the one he left but is his father’s because while Phil actually built another life in the past near-decade, Wilbur failed. He’ll be damned if he tells Phil that, though.

From Phil’s wife, he gets a warm welcome. From her sons, the welcome is a bit colder. All that matters to Wilbur, though, is that he has a warm bed to sleep and mourn his life in, and his father does not know of the failure he has become. This becomes harder the more he starts to care about the family he has waltzed into the life of unprompted, the more they start to care about him, and it is not just his father he fears disappointing.
