Kristin Owens: Five Things I (Painfully) Learned While Writing Elizabeth Sails
I apologize now. I don’t write horror, but the journey of a debut novelist is a terrifying experience. I write women’s fiction which can be defined seventy-two different ways (none of which I’m a fan). But before you delete and scroll on, hear me out: writers are all the same under our sweatpants and craft beer t-shirts, no matter your genre of choice. Here are some tasty tidbits for either new or seasoned scribblers.
ONE: no experience required
[...]
The shrugged industry advice ‘just write what you know’ feels like a cop-out because no one is honest enough to share the dirty secret: it’s pounding the keyboard until something comprehensible squirts out. You pull creativity from your nether regions until salve is required.
[...]
TWO: goals are relative to your age
Elizabeth Sails is my debut novel. I’m 55 and exhausted.
I blame my writing group. Eight years ago, they said, “Write a sassy book,” and I listened. I’d been writing articles for local lifestyle magazines, which provided a glimpse into publishing. Making word counts, finding brevity, and hitting deadlines – I learned a lot. But a novel? Instead of churning out happy pieces on food trucks, local beer, and yoga for 20 cents a word, a book necessitated a boatload of creativity and budget for more printer ink.

Episode four of The eX-Files podcast hosted by Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo is out now
Episode four, “Conduit,” of The eX-Files, an “X-Files” rewatch podcast from acclaimed podcast hosts Jenny Owen Youngs and Kristin Russo, is out now. New episodes follow every Wednesday and are available on all major podcast platforms.
Tumblr media
The eX-Files is created under Russo and Young’s podcast collective Buffering: A Rewatch Adventure—part of the ongoing collection of rewatch podcasts under the duo’s creative direction.
“Conduit” follows episode three, “Squeeze,” which featured Song Exploder host/creator Hrishikesh Hirway. Future season guests will be announced soon.
On The eX-Files, Youngs—who grew up on a steady diet of Mulder and Scully—and Russo—who’s never seen it—dig into every episode of the seminal 90s sci-fi, “The X-Files,” spoiler free, one at a time. The podcast’s namesake—The eX-Files spelled with an “e”—is a credit to the duo’s relationship: in addition to being longtime business partners, Youngs and Russo are also ex-wives. The new series finds Youngs and Russo at their very best, as they engage in critical discussions on aliens, actors and ’90s nostalgia through a queer and feminist lens. Youngs and Russo’s first project—what started as a podcast venture between a married couple to explore every episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”—turned into a pop culture phenomenon that sold out live shows across the country. Their infectious chemistry, coupled with their joyful and empathetic exploration of story, earned Buffering the Vampire Slayera spot on the top of rewatch podcast lists from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, Esquire, TIME and more.
Singer-songwriter Jenny Owen Youngs has released numerous albums and EPs, including last year’s It’s Dangerous to Go Alone, and has toured worldwide with the likes of Regina Spektor, Frank Turner and Aimee Mann, among others. She recently co-wrote the chart topping, five-time platinum single “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco, as well as co-writing songs with Ingrid Michaelson, Pitbull, Briston Maroney, Shungudzo and others. Her solo music has been featured on TV shows such as “Weeds,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Nurse Jackie” and “Bojack Horseman” and has seen praise from The AV Club, The New York Times, Stereogum and NPR.
Kristin Russo is a writer, educator and consultant with a focus on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) issues. She is the author of This is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids (Chronicle, 2014) and founded the educational website My Kid Is Gay. She also worked as host and producer of “First Person,” a video series on gender and sexuality from PBS Digital and WNET. She holds a Masters in Gender Studies from the CUNY Graduate Center, has spoken at hundreds of universities nationwide—Harvard, Stanford and NYU included—and works with large-scale companies like Hyatt, Virgin Galactic, and Toyota on allyship & inclusion.
You can listen to Episode four, “Conduit,” of The eX-Files HERE.

Upload Episode 3x8 Review: Is "Flesh and Blood" Meaty Enough for a Finale?
Review With Dr. Kapoor now six feet under because he knew too much, the season finale of Upload titled “Flesh and Blood” throws us right on the trial, where Holden (Kristine Cofsky) exposes Horizen’s ad campaign aimed towards children for Lakeview. While putting Lucy (Andrea Rosen) under scrutiny is mildly satisfying to me, it’s downright bliss to Karina (Jeanine Mason), which skeeves out Aleesha…

The Ex-Files is a delightful new podcast from the exes of Buffering the Vampire Slayer In 2016, Jenny Owen Youngs launched a podcast called Buffering the Vampire Slayer, with her then-wife, Kristin Russo, author of This is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids. Youngs was an avid Buffy fan, though Russo had never seen the show, so they agreed to watch the entire series and talk about each episode through a queer lens; to top it off, Youngs would write a song for every single episode of the show. — Read the rest https://boingboing.net/2023/03/30/the-ex-files-is-a-delightful-new-podcast-from-the-exes-of-buffering-the-vampire-slayer.html

Hope you have a happy halloween!
Trick or treat!

Nonny, that's so sweet! For that you get two spins of the wheel.
Tumblr media
Your first treat is Directive!
A Sci Fi series about a man stuck alone for 20 years, taking care of sleeping passengers on a ship to colonize a new planet. Created by David Magadan Part 2 available now

And your second is The eX-Files!
Welcome to The eX-Files, an episodic rewatch podcast in which Jenny Owen Youngs & Kristin Russo dig into every episode of The X-Files, spoiler free, one at a time. Jenny grew up watching The X-Files when it aired, but Kristin has only ever seen the pilot episode. (Her review: "hot.") The podcast’s title — The eX-Files spelled with an “e” — is a credit to our relationship: in addition to being longtime business partners, we are also ex-wives. *cue spooky music*

Books for spiritual formation
Books that have left an indelible mark on my understanding of God or the Christian faith in some way. My spiritual development is unfinished, so this list is unfinished - I'm always open to suggestions
Soren Kierkegaard
The Sickness Unto Death - Explained how sin works psychologically, illustrates how it can be its own punishment
Works of Love - What it means to love, what it costs, what it gives us
Fear and Trembling - What faith means, its miraculous nature
Karl Barth
Evangelical Theology - What theology actually means, how the gospel is good news
The Epistle to the Romans - Shows the need for continual reformation of thought within the church, introduced (to me) the idea of God's freedom in communication to man
Church Dogmatics II.2 - Election is good news! It is God willing to choose humanity despite sin - universal reconciliation can and should be hoped for
The Journal of John Woolman
What undying commitment to justice means, what it looks like
Martin Luther King Jr
Letter from a Birmingham Jail - Made me understand how Romans 13:1 can be integrated into radical politics
A Gift of Love - Brought to life 1 John 4:20
A Prayer for Owen Meany, John Irving
A narrative illustration of unwavering faith
The Imitation of Christ, Thomas Kempis
What we're saved to, salvation has a telos
Flannery O'Connor
Wise Blood - Life without Christ, the perils of sola scriptura
A Good Man is Hard to Find - Shows grace as an intrusive lived experience
Marilynne Robinson
Gilead novels (Gilead, Home, Lila) - Rich illustration of Imago Dei
When I Was a Child I Read Books - Bolstered my understanding of the 8th commandment (reading with charitable intent, in interactions with others in life and on the page)
What Are We Doing Here? - Illustrates what the glory of God means in daily experience
Garry Wills
What Paul Meant - Paul and Jesus were of a unified mind, stop reading Paul as a bible thumper, start reading him as a man who loved dearly and wrote with urgency on live issues
Religio Medici, Thomas Browne
Ecumenism is a beautiful thing and should be strived for in all Christian communities
The Seven Storey Mountain, Thomas Merton
The gospel brings peace of mind and soul, searching for peace is a valid epistemology
Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arendt
Wickedness is not inevitable, it arises from moral and intellectual sluggardliness
The Cost of Discipleship, Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Learn to love the church, it is the arms of Christ; great exegesis of the Sermon on the Mount; great companion to the book of James
White Evangelical Racism, Anthea Butler
Evangelicalism did not emerge from theological first principles, it is a diseased expression of the faith informed by racism at the root
Jesus and John Wayne, Kristin Kobes du Mez
Evangelicalism did not emerge from theological first principles, it is a diseased expression of the faith informed by misogyny at the root
C.S. Lewis
The Great Divorce - Eternity begins now, sin is its own punishment and grace is its own reward
Till We Have Faces - God has compassion and patience for those who wrestle with him, to summon the boldness to contend with God can be a blessed thing
The Courage to Be, Paul Tillich
The dynamics of Christian faith explained in the abstract
As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner
The thinness of intellectual assent, the richness of faith
The Denial of Death, Ernest Becker
Explanation of the existential need faith meets in the language of continental philosophy
Confessions, St. Augustine
The most theologically and philosophically rich testimony besides that of St. Paul
An Unpublished Essay on the Trinity, Jonathan Edwards
What is the trinity, why is it important
John Milton
Areopagitica - Enforced virtue means nothing
Paradise Lost - Human beings are worth saving even if they aren't deserving of God's favor
Civilization and its Discontents, Sigmund Freud
Illustrates the necessity of grace by exploring a world through the assumption of its absence (excellent foil to A Gift of Love)

Upload Episode 3x7 Review: In "Upload Day", the Only Display of Growth is Sadly in Ingrid's Nose
Review: The penultimate episode of Upload (Prime Video) season three opens on Nathan’s new base of operations in Lakeview, a white space with a very comfortable chair. The idea of having Nathan (Robbie Amell) affixed to Nora (Andy Allo) like Iron Man’s “Football” armor is really appealing, especially when mobile. Their using the twenty minutes affectionally before Nathan uploads is the perfect…

my very biased favoirtes (tm)
kingkiller chronicle baby!! ive been obsessed with this series for half my life now and ive written essays on it for fun. it is deeply special to me.
the tortall books esp the song of the lioness was one of the first books i read on my own that my mom hadnt read. these are my ultimate comfort books and influence the fantasy i read after.
graceling realms by kristin cashore (well the first three at least) is a series i can read over and over. i love the magic system and how it's tied to themes. the main characters are complicated and dynamic, the romances are beautiful .. . absolutely amazing.
the gilded wolves by roshani chokshi is a puzzle book, a historical fantasy. there is a big emphasis on found family, addresses racism and colonialism within europe (esp the upper class), and it is all very cleverly constructed.
legendborn by tracy deonn is worth all the hype is is getting and I hope people continue recognizing its awesomeness. the only book in king arthur canon im attached to. its about grief, it's about legacy, it's about institutional racism, its about parents and children. read for a strong emotional journey, complicated characters, and difficult conversations about king arthur and the united states
in other lands by sarah rees brennan which tbh i read back when it was being published online. perfect for those who love snarky protagonists, commentary on the fantasy genre, you gotta try this book!
the poppy war by rf kuang is one of the few trilogies i have finished in the past few year. its absolutely heart-wrenching. starts as a magic school book, then turns into a magic war book. please look up the trigger warnings beforehand. perfect for those who love epic fantasies tied to historical events.
piranesi by susanna clarke is the strangest book I've read. its not like anything else I've read. you should absolutely try it.
strange the dreamer by laini taylor is beautifully written, clever, and full of amazing themes. i love these characters and worlds and it's very lovely and intense.
elatsoe by darcie little badger is a modern day fantasy and i cannot recommend it enough, it's so clever and kind and theres ghost dogs????
little thieves by margaret owen- my new beloved. this book was written for me, even if the author doesnt know it. sequel comes out in only a few days, perfect time to read it!!
Honorable mentions:
sunshine by robin mckinley- i love robin mckinley's books although this is not my favorite, its a fantastic take on vampires
the bone witch by rin chupeco- amazing world building and beautiful writing, im way overdue to finish the series
nettle and bone by t. kingfisher- a dark, creepy fairy tale feel that has me wanting more from the author
an ember in the ashes by sabaa tahir- another series i absolutely need to finish, has some really interesting morally gray characters.
wayward children by seanan mcguire- these books are so satisfying and i am absolutely the target audience for this series. we love deconstructed portal fantasies
girls made of snow and glass by melissa bashardoust- i will read all fairy tale retellings but this one i bought after because i needed this fantastic version of snow white
the sandsea trilogy by chelsea abdullah- only the first one is out but i am so invested to see where this reimagining of a thousand and one nights goes!
his dark materials by phillip pullman- a classic. your soul is your animal companion. need i say more?
the golem and the jinni by helene wecker- a very recent read but i will be shoving this into peoples hands now. historical fantasy isnt always my jam but when it works, it works.
