honestly I love Toph in tlok but my defense of her characterization would come off as Toph slander I think. Like, they didnt write her as a cop because she's the rich elite and a little close-minded and stubborn and emotionally crippled by her ego and cares more about proving herself in every way possible than facilitating any societal change, they made her a cop cus it was 2012 and they were white liberals and its all they could think of I guess BUT. It fits.

Two: She knows how short lifespans are in the game, and she's hesitant to tie herself down like that, even when she's head over heels. Remember the fic where Domingo was about to propose? It's that.

Now, if she could get either him or Nacho to run off with her to somewhere they'd be safe, she might ask. Otherwise? She'll never say it, but she's afraid.

you walked into class the next day, hesitant to walk in. you peeked your head in awkwardly to see if ao'nung was there as kiri only quietly laughed at your antics, walking past you to her seat.

your eyes scanned the room and you breathed a sigh of relief when you didn't spot the boy, and you were about to walk in when you froze at the sound of an unfamiliar voice.

"hope you didn't forget about our deal, because i spent like seven bucks on your coffee."

shutting your eyes tightly and opening, and silently praying to eywa that this was a dream, you turned around, being met with his bright blue orbs.

"ah, how could i ever forget? i was promised free coffee." you played along, hoping he'd miss the way your cheeks turned pink at the sight of him.

eywa, he was even more attractive standing in front of you.

"well then, i hope your willing to keep your side of the deal." he smiled, handing your coffee to you before walking into the class, pulling out the seat beside his dramatically for you to sit in.

you rolled your eyes at his dramatic gesture and sat in the seat, trying hard to not let your face turn anymore red.

you pulled out your computer, your leg bouncing beneath the desk. ao'nung noticed this and smirked, his hand gently resting on top of your thigh, making you jump.

"calm down sweetheart, you're shaking in your seat," he smugly stated, making you softly groan into your hands. "i won't bite you, i promise. unless you're into that kinda thing. which is a bit weird, i guess, but to each their own."

"oh just shut up."

eywa decided to grace you just now, because before ao'nung could embarrass you once more the professor had arrived, and soon went into his lecture for the day.

"saved by the bell." ao'nung grinned, retracting his hand and finally focusing up.

hello everybody, I'm Nico, you might know me from being a fucking hater and a gross nerd and I'm here to tell you that you don't have to be whipped around by the big 2, there's a world of good shit out there, we can go find it together. come, take my hand.

these are the ones you are supposed to read, even if you mainly read big 2 stuff.

ok, with these out of the way, let's begin

so you want to read super hero type stuff

1. black hammer by Jeff lemire et al.

in the past, black hammer (the greatest supper hero) and six superheroes of his team save the city but in the process get sucked into a parallel dimension, in the 10 years since they have tried everything to go back to their world without much success, but there's still superheroing to do.

2. minor threats by Patton oswalt et al.

one of the biggest villains in the city murders the robin analogue in this world. which causes the heroes to go hog wild and turn everything into a police state. in the middle of it all, the small time villains who just want to rob a store or turn dogs into cats or whatever are caught in the line of fire of a fight way above their pay grade.

3. America's got powers by Johnathan Ross and Bryan hitch

18 years ago an alien crystal of unknown origin fell from the sky in San Francisco, at that same moment every pregnant woman in the city gave birth to a superpowered child. today, all of the babies are used as gladiators in a reality show that can bring them fame and fortune or death. the only kid to be born that day without superpowers is thrust all the same into the arena to fend for himself.

4. buzzkill by Donny cates and mark reznicek

imagine you're the biggest superhero there is, but to get each of your individual super powers you had to consume a different drug everytime you wanted to use it. imagine that this breaks every single relationship you have and you want to go clean. imagine also that the city still needs you. what is your obligation to your city over yourself?

the first two titles are more akin to big 2 comics with an expansive universe and several smaller titles to accompany the main one.

so you want to read a little freak

1. bone by Jeff Smith

go read bone. do it now. phoney bone gets expelled from his natal city from his latest scheme to get rich. in the process he drags out of the city his cousins smiley bone and fone bone, our hero. in the process of escaping the three get separated and each one gets into his own adventures that unfold a dark tale in the valley they end up on. a dark fantasy comedy for all ages

2. good bye, chunky rice by Craig thompson

a small turtle leaves his home and his friends because he feels he has done all he can in this particular stage of his life. he explores love and loss throughout his trip

3. Krazy Kat by George herriman

this is one of the most influential newspaper strips of the early 20th century. Krazy is a cat in love with ignatz the mouse who fucking hates him. krazy's biggest want in life is to get his love reciprocated, ignatz just wants to throw bricks at krazy's head

so you want to bawl your eyes out

1. primordial by Jeff lemire and Andrea Sorrentino.

one of the scientists in charge of the Laika space launch is convinced she is still up there somewhere and is adamant to get her back. at the same time the last launch with monkey is going into space. on one side we see the scientists working and dealing with the ethical ramifications of their work, on the other we see the critters and their limited sentience of what is happening.

2. the lil depressed boy by Isabel struble and Sina grace

the lil depressed boy (or ldb as everyone calls him) is a sack boy like the one in little big planet, but one who is a fucking nerd and likes indie music and bowling, he navigates through life without direction, finding temporary relief in one thing or another, but ultimately a lost soul just doing whatever he can to stay afloat. you will find this under the author's deadname, but after her transition Isabel seems to have shed the veil that made this autobiographical story happen. good-for-her.gif

3. essex county by jeff lemire

this is a trilogy of books based around the area in which jeff lemire grew up in with only a geographical connection uniting them. a young boy has his whole world turned upside down with no one to guide him through it. a pair of brothers who did everything together grow apart and end up hating each other in adulthood. a rural nurse reckons with how she can only do so much for the people that depend on her. this was also adapted for canadian tv but i really havent seen it yet, so i dont know how that went

so you want to read about important stuff

1. Maus by art spielgman

this probably should have gone in the first part of things everyone tells you to read but I'd be remiss not mentioning it directly. it is the only comic to win a Pulitzer, art spielgman tells us how his father tells him his story during the Holocaust. it is harrowing, raw, and gruesome. but it still retains a glimmer of better things, art's father is funny in his relationship with art which give you little respites to all the shit going on

2. march by John Lewis with Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell

yes, the John Lewis who marched next to Martin Luther king. this is his autobiographical account of the civil rights movement in the 60s. it is insightful but raw. still feeling it all in the present day.

3. Vaincus mais vivants. chile 1973 by Maximilien leroy

I hate french people but they're good at this comic book shit. this Tells the tale of commandante Carmen and commandante Miguel, heads of the MIR (movimiento de izquierda revolucionaria-revolutionary leftist movement) before and during the USA backed coup in Chile in 1973. how they had worked before it went down, and how they hid to try to survive the persecution.

4. footnotes in Gaza by Joe sacco

Joe sacco is a journalist who does comics on the side. in this stand out he tries to tell the story of the Khan Yunis and rafah massacres in 1956 through interviews with palestinians alive at the time, while interweaving the current (to 2003) situation in rafah. another account of the monster that is Israel and the resilience of the Palestinian people.

so you want to laugh

1. the tick by Ben endlund

you have seen the cartoon. the tick is a dumbass who is also the biggest hero in naked city. go read this shit, just pick up whatever volume you find, continuity isn't really a thing here

2. imagine agents by Brian Joines and bachan

this is basically men in black but instead of aliens they have to control and keep the people from knowing about the reality of imaginary friends kids abandon and how they can get out of control. it's so stupid

so you want to read a western

1. east of west by Jonathan hickman and Nick dragotta

much like in reality, the USA is a dystopian land but in this book there's also science fiction. and the only begins that can save that shit hole are the four horsemen of the apocalypse.

2. Shaolin cowboy by Geoff Darrow

like east of west, this mixes science fiction with western. but this is pretty simple. he's a Shaolin monk who is also a cowboy, and he has to get out of situations. one time it was a flying shark, another one it was zombies. and so on and so forth *zizek voice*

3. six gun gorilla by Simon spurrier and Jeff stokely

in a world colonized in the future after earth was ran dry of respurces by greed, one single gunslinger tries to bring order to the land. he happens to be a biologically enhanced gorilla

so you want to get experimental

jimmy corrigan: the smartest kid on earth by chris ware

simply put, this shit is the house of leaves of comics. some dude get the opportunity to meet his dad for the first time at the age of 36. its simple enough but this takes you for a visual ride.

2. asterios polyp by david mazzuchelli

again, this story is simple enough. a professor gets his house torched by thunder and escapes the city to star anew somewhere else. but you get the story told by people who dont exist, jumping between past and present.

3. almost silent by jason

jason's stories are pantomime. his anthropomorphic characters dont emote too much, but you can feel them. this collection of stories focuses on his stories that have almost no dialogue at all.

so you want gays

are you listening? by tillie walden

this isnt a love story. but it is a story of connection and deep understanding, of someone else and yourself. theres also a magical cat in it.

2. laura dean keeps breaking up with me by mariko tamaki and rosemary valero-o'connell

laura dean is the protagonist's on again, off again girlfriend. she is also a cunt. freddy keeps distancing herself from her circle due to laura's games and manipulation. but she has to learn how to keep herself afloat in this vortex.

shit you need to read because its important to the art form

a contract with god by will eisner

this is the originator of the term graphic novel. its a triology of stories which are in the vein of a lot of eisner's comics, simple pictures of life in a jewish neighborhood in new york. but told with such mastery of the craft that they pull you in like nothing else.

2. calvin & hobbes by bill watterson

yeah, yeah. i know. you know calvin and hobbes. you love calvin and hobbes. go read the whole thing from start to finish tho, go do it right now.

3. hicksville by dylan horrocks

this is universailly described as a love letter to comics as a medium. it tells you a biographical account of dylan horrocks life. it also tells you a biographical account of sam zabel, a character of horrock's that appears in much of his ouvre. it also tells you a story of intrigue and mystery surrounding the biggest comic creator in the world, dick burger (yeah, thats his name). it is also my favorite comic.

When it was all said and done, when Bobby and Athena were finally home safe and one of the longest days of their lives was over, Eddie expected a visit with Hen, Buck and Chim to their favorite hook and ladder bar would be a good way to celebrate and to release some of the tension.

Instead, he found a whole new reason to be tense.

“Why are you over here sulking?”

“M'not sulking,” Eddie muttered at Chim, turning his attention away from the table where Buck and Tommy were sitting side by side like they'd been Krazy glued together, “I'm buying the next round.”

“Yeah, and this is the third round you've bought tonight.”

“So?” Eddie said, shrugging in a way even he knew looked fake.

Chim's face twisted. “Well, I don't want to say you're tight with your money,” he began, “but this is such unprecedented behavior that I'm starting to suspect you either won the Powerball lottery or have a brain tumor.”

“Ha ha,” Eddie said, his eyes back on Tommy and Buck again. Tommy leaned close and said something in Buck's ear, and Buck laughed and ducked his head.

The fuck, Eddie thought.

“Earth to Eddie Diaz.”

Eddie pursed his lips. “So what's Tommy's deal?”

Chim's eyebrows shot up. “He's a decent guy, a good firefighter. I'd go so far as to call him a friend, though since he left the 118 we haven't been in touch as often as we could have.”

Eddie made a frustrated noise. “Okay. But that's not what I mean.”

“You mean –” Chim nodded at the table. “Is he macking on Buckaroo? It sure looks that way. He came out a couple of years ago, when I worked with him he was definitely in the closet.”

“So he's just looking for a quick fuck,” Eddie snapped, then blinked. Where had that come from?

“Uh,” Chim said. “I honestly have no idea. I do know that what two consenting grown adults want to do together is none of my business.”

Eddie shook his head to clear it. “Sorry.”

“You don't need to apologize. But you might want to ask yourself why you're so concerned about Buck's virtue.”

Eddie gritted his teeth. “You're right. It's none of my business either,” he said, handing two beers to Chim and grabbing the remaining drinks. As he walked back to the table, he tried to ignore the sensation of Chim's gaze boring twin holes in the back of his head.

WASP REVIEW - ZINGER (DONKEY KONG SERIES)

and were back to the wasps based entirely on eusocial species! This time, the basic Zingers (although having a few different recolored iterations) look the most like some black and yellow species of paper wasp or yellowjackets. Given Rareware's home of operations and the homeland of designer Steve Mayles, being England, I feel like it's fairly safe to assume that they're based on one of three species of wasp: the common wasp (Vespula vulgaris), the European wasp/German yellowjacket (Vespula germanica), or the European paper wasp (Polistes dominula)!

They're not entirely accurate; the markings aren't too precise, they only have two wings as opposed to the four on a real wasp (Although the DK: Jungle Climber iteration changes their shape to at least imply a second pair), and obviously real wasps don't have a trail of spines/stingers running down their metasoma nor a pair of signature Rareware cartoon eyes. However, the original model especially is surprisingly accurate for being based on an animal that the designer himself said he was scared by! I especially appreciate the original's fairly accurate legs and addition of setae!

It's in the games themselves where we run into more inaccuracies to these particular species, however. In the original DKC, the queen of the Zingers is named Queen B. and is fought on the boss stage titled 'Bumble B. Rumble', clearly being a direct reference to real world bees, which are several familial branches away in the wasp subclade Aculeata from the previously listed Vespids. This is honestly, while a little frustrating, not a big deal. But, when we get into the second game in the DKC line, we discover their hives.

The Zinger hives throw a major spanner in the works. The wasps mentioned make paper nests, with the yellowjackets nests having a round, closed structure, some yellowjackets building inside of trees or in dirt burrows, and the paper wasps having an open, umbrella-like structure both including cells built in hexagonal shapes, built to contain their larvae and often having silk caps covering them. Meanwhile, the Zingers have nests that match the hexagonal cells, caps, and larvae of these wasps, but are clearly made of yellow wax and contain honey, like that of honey bees.

Honey bees will also cap their honey and larvae with wax, and while a few notable species of Vespid wasps do, in fact, produce honey, the european paper wasps and yellowjackets are not a part of that particular set of species! Oddly, some of the cells appear to contain notably smaller adults as opposed to other cells that contain larvae. To add further confusion, one of these hive levels is titled 'Hornet Hole', hornets being another completely different genus within Vespidae (Vespa).

On top of all that, at the end of the area that contains the hive levels, Krazy Kremland, you fight another Zinger boss, this time named King Zing. As you may know, no wasps have a 'King', solely having a Queen, with hives having both Kings and Queens among eusocial insects being moreso found in termites, belonging to a completely different order (Blattodea).

Outside of their nesting behavior and hierarchy, their behavior is generally unremarkable for platformer enemies, with amped up aggression from that of a real world wasp (although admittedly not nearly as aggressive as a real world wasp would be if you were a monkey with a baseball cap and an unquenchable thirst for bananas invading their nest, as you play in DKC2) to give the player an obstacle to overcome in these levels. It is, at least, implied that these wasps would collect nectar from flowers to turn into the honey found in their nest.

Plus, as I wondered in my review of Fallout: New Vegas' Cazadores, I have to question what exactly a wasp of such a size hunts to bring back to its young! Hopefully Donkey or Diddy Kong wouldn't find themselves on the menu!

All in all, these wasps get a few things right, but are quite the mixed bag of confused species with a couple outright inaccuracies not found in Hymenoptera in general thrown in there. Though I can commend the effort by the designer!

by the by it’s soooo krazy how i see almost no commentary on how skyfall is literally hinged on how the british empire deals with colonization/outsiders. many stop at face value about silva being bleach blond and playing his revenge game ignoring that the mask he puts on is a campy rendition of the blue-eyed blond-haired perfectly british archetype of the empire. how m pretty much sells him — a non-british agent whose origin is kept vague ON PURPOSE — to help china’s transition from british colony to free state?? how often britain is personified as a woman/the iconography of queen victoria and how m definitely stands for that?

Jesus, Walter White really IS a spoiled bitch.

I just finished the fifth episode and like. He was given everything. If he felt resentful at being cheated out of Gray Matter, then Elliot was essentially giving him what he was owed. If he felt humiliated about his lowly position, he was getting one where people would truly listen to and value his input. If he really is concerned about his family's finances, then shouldn't he take this job? It's more secure and far less at risk of getting them killed compared to. I dunno. DRUG DEALING.

And that's the thing, Walter gets everything he could ask for, but then he always has to say no because it's not given to him in the most hyper-specific way. He asks for a thing but then pisses himself because he didn't earn it, whatever that means. As if being a brilliant chemist didn't earn Elliot's gratitude and respect.

He has the gall to weep over Krazy-8's death, but instead of taking in the one sincere thing Krazy-8 told him, that he wasn't cut out for this line of work... Walter goes back to it anyway when he had the Gray Matter job. Oh, does he feel emasculated about working for the guy who 'stole' Gretchen, as if Skyler isn't all he needs? So is he admitting that Skyler is his second choice and he's still hung up over Gretchen? What difference does it make?

I can understand the first three episodes; Dude finds out he's going to die in two years. I can't imagine how I'd feel. I can imagine that Walter lashed out in a mid-life crisis moment (more end-of-life crisis) and yeah he's heard Hank ramble about the dangers of the business for years, but sure. He thinks it's as simple as just making meth and giving it to Jesse to sell for him. He doesn't expect that Emilio and Krazy-8 would come for them because he's inexperienced and naive, and before Walter knows it, he has to kill them both.

But that's the thing, he could've left it at that; A simple mistake spiraled into consequences he didn't anticipate, and it forced him to kill to protect his family. But you'd think he'd have learned his lesson, never again, I'm never going to go back to a business that kills other people because he cares about life. He'd respect Emilio and Krazy-8's deaths by not going back to this life.

...And then he decides to anyway, because his own ego is more important after all. Walter really goes on a whole spiel about how he wants a choice but really I think he's just hung up over Gretchen and it's honestly pathetic. Skyler spells out for Walter that he has a son who needs him anyway, and he’d be at less risk from other Krazy-8s coming to take revenge if Walter worked at Grey Matter. Hank even spells out that he's operating on some real pride here. Walter would be the kind of person who says he must do anything for his family, even kill, so their finances can be settled; But what about bearing the indignity of the whole Gretchen bit? He's fine with killing as long as his ego is preserved, vs sacrificing his own ego even a little.

So Krazy-8's death meant nothing to him, after all. I keep hearing this meme of "This is the moment Walter became Heisenberg" and honestly I think this episode might be it. He had all he needed to back out, he'd learned his lesson the first time, he knew better now. He had the guilt, the sanctity of life to consider. And Walter decided his ego was more important than the fact that he'd likely be killing again. He didn't learn a damn thing. I think that really was the moment when he made his choice, by deciding Emilio and Krazy-8's deaths just didn't matter; And if their lives didn't matter, then who else's did?

You walked to the cafe to find Ao'nung, slightly nervous about what he wanted to talk about.

You looked down at your feet, slightly regretting not bringing a coat to your class. You chided yourself on not keeping yourself warm in fear you'd get sick again, and in the midst of your thoughts, a voice snapped you out of it.

"Y/n!"

Turning around to see Ao'nung, you smiled and stopped, letting him catch up to you. "Where's your coat?"

"Don't have one."

"This is why you get colds, you know." He teased, taking off his coat to give to you.

"You really don't have to—"

"Just shut up," He cut you off, throwing an arm around your shoulders. "As much as I loved blowing all my money on your tea and croissants, I'd rather not deal with a sick y/n. She was pretty hostile."

"Whatever," you rolled your eyes, your hand reaching up to lightly pinch his nose. "No sneezing today?"

"I took allergy pills." he grinned down at you, the two of you walking aimlessly around, in no rush to get to the cafe.

"So, what'd you wanna talk about?"

"Uhm, yeah," he paused, looking away from you and biting the inside of his cheek. "I really like you, y/n. You're sweet, and you're always so great to me, and I love being around you, so I was just wondering if you wanted to be like, my girlfriend. Or whatever." He mumbled the last part, you faintly hearing the words.

You'd stopped walking by now, standing in an empty alleyway. "Ao'nung, I really like you," you started, taking notice of the pink dusting his cheeks. "But I just don't think I'm ready for that."

His eyes met yours, and he nodded in an understanding matter. "Is it— is it Neteyam? Do you like him, or whatever?"

"He's my ex."

"Wow, okay, big detail you left out there," he joked, and you rolled your eyes at his ability to still joke at a time like this. "When did you guys break up?"

"Like, two months ago," you sighed, resting your head on his shoulder. "I like you Ao'nung, seriously. And you're a great guy, but I'm sorry, the last thing I wanna do is get into a relationship when I'm not ready and not completely over someone."

"Hey, don't even worry about it," he smiled, his thumb rubbing over your arm comfortingly. "Neteyam's a good guy, and you're around him like all the time, I get it. Just know I'll be here, okay? As a friend or— whatever we are."

You laughed, thanking him before you guys continued on your way to the cafe, his arm still around you.

Oddly enough, Neteyam was the last thing on your mind right now, until you actually entered the cafe. He was there, sitting at the booth with his arm around Violet, both their hair wet, presumably coming back from the beach.

Ao'nung glanced over and saw them, and you two both turned away to the other side of the cafe before Neteyam could spot you, leaving you with a sinking feeling in your stomach.
