How to say friend in Korean| The meaning of 친구 (chingu)

Friend in Korean is literally translate to 친구 (chingu).

Here’s how to say Friend in Korean language in formal, causal and polite situations.

Friend in Korean (Standard) - 주세요 (juseyo)/주시겠어요 (jusigesseoyo)

Friend in Korean (Informal)-줘 (jwo)

Friend in Korean (Formal)-주십시오 (jusipsio)/주시기 바랍니다 (jusigi baramnida)

Note

Age is very important in Korea.So It sounds rude to call someone who is older than you “chingu”. You can only use Chingu” with people of a similar age or with close friends.

어려울 때 친구가 진정한 친구다.

The correct meaning of best friend in Korean

The most common way to say best friend in Korean is 베프 (bepeu) but there are others way to say “best friend which is 가장 친한 친구 [ga-jang chin-han chin-gu] and 절친 [jeol-chin].

 It’s also possible to use the Konglish expression 베스트 프렌드 [be-seu-teu-peu-ren-deu] which means best friend.

If you want to say “great friend.” in Korean, you can say 절친 (jeolchin), shortened from 절친한 친구 (jeolchinhan chingu)

베프 (bepeu) is the Korean slang word for friend in Korean. It’s a cute version. 

Example

I'm about to have dinner with my best friend. 

나는 베프와 이제 막 저녁을 먹으려던 참이야

How are things going with your new best friend? 

너의 새로운 베프와는 어떻게 되고 있니?

My best friend keeps trying to set me up on dates.

How to address your friend in Korean

When you know someonebut not friends yet, you can address them as 아는 사람 (aneun saram) means “a person I know”

It is similar to the english word  “an acquaintance”

Unlike english, In Korea you can refer someone as  friend iif you are close with  and you both are of same age (donggab/동갑).

how can you introduce  them?

When to add ‘-ah’ after someone’s name

If your friend is same age or younger than you , you can say their name in Korean add “ah/아” or “yah /야” to the end of the name.

If their name ends at consonant , add 아 at the end of their name 

If their name ends at vowel add “yah /야” at the end of their name

Example

 정수 (Jungsoo)becomes 정수야

 혁재(Hyukjae)becomes 혁재야

 동해(Donghae)becomes 동해야

이특(Leeteuk)becomes 이특아

은혁(Eunhyuk)becomes 은혁아

도윤(Do-yun)becomes 도윤아

However, if your friend is older than you, you need to address them different title like noons, huyng,unni and oppa in Korean

So the Korean words below can be used to address your older “friend” in if you’re speaking to your female or male friend like this

Someone younger than you- 동생 (dongsaeng)

If you are a male and A male who is older than you-형 (hyeong)

If you are a male and A female who is older than you- 누나 (nuna)

If you are a female and A male who is older than you- 오빠 (oppa)

If you are a female and A female who is older than you-언니 (eonni)

What is your opinion about Han Kang winning the 2024 nobel prize in literature? Is she the best representative of Korean literature nowadays?

This took a while to answer, sorry nonnie. I wanted to try making this as informative and helpful as possible- plus I was(and still am) kinda busy with preparing for college entrance stuff😅.

So!!! To answer your question:

The Korean author 한강(Han Kang) mainly writes fiction about human life and resisting violence, or historical fiction dealing with Korean modern history; I'm gonna focus more on the historical fiction side here though.

Her historical novels focus on the mental & physical scars left on Korea during the tumultuous period right after the Japanese Colonial Period & the Korean War, through the eyes of ordinary people whose lives were destroyed by each event. So Han Kang winning the Nobel Prize is super meaningful to us, because it means the world is taking an interest in Korean history, and the pain we went through.

There's a well-known quote in Korea; it was said by the Japanese Colonial Period Independence Activist & leader of the Provisional Korean Government, 김구(Kim Gu).

"오직 한없이 가지고 싶은 것은 높은 문화의 힘이다. 문화의 힘은 우리 자신을 행복하게 하고, 나아가서 남에게 행복을 주기 때문이다."

("The only thing I wish we had limitlessly is high power of culture. For the power of culture brings joy to ourselves, and furthermore gives joy to others.")

This quote means cultural power is crucial in drawing in the world to our side. If other countries enjoy our culture, they'll also take an interest in understanding us, which will in turn lead to them taking an interest in our wellbeing & listening to our voice. In fact, it's happening right now! People are learning Korean for K-Pop and K-Dramas! People are getting interested in Korean culture!! Han Kang won the Nobel Prize for books about our history!!!

So, yeah. I think Han Kang's Nobel Prize is very important to Korea, because we're now one step closer to the world acknowledging the sufferings of our country that previously went unrecognized.

And yes, I think Han Kang's novels are a good representation not just of Korean literature, but of the spirit of Korea as well! A number of her works describe some horrific incidents in our history, and others present a calm sort of criticism on the violence of society. <채식주의자(The Vegetarian)>, one of her better-known works of fiction, is a neat slightly grotesque(?) example of this recurring theme of advocating for peace and resisting violence. (This one isn't about history BTW! It's about a woman resisting the lifestyle of her secular family.)

Both history and peace are especially important themes to Koreans. History, because we're always striving not to let it repeat & not to let unsolved disputes be forgotten. Peace, because we're in constant danger, from being the world's one and only divided country, among other things.

BUT, as many Koreans are pointing out, Han Kang is- though undisputedly very talented- one of many amazing writers in Korea. In fact, I've even heard people say up to 60~70% of Korean authors are likely capable of winning the Nobel Prize, if only their work would be translated properly. I- and a lot of others- think Han Kang's success on the international level is not only thanks to her own stellar talent, but also to her translator, Deborah Smith. Deborah Smith has been translating Han Kang's works for a while now, and her thoughtful translations have been much appreciated. NGL, I've seen so many Korean-to-English translations that suck so bad, so seeing Korean literature get translated by someone who very obviously cares a lot about the text? It was like a breath of fresh air after being stuck in the school auditorium for two hours. (And yes, I have just walked out of the school auditorium after being stuck there for two hours.)

This is a lil besides the point, but this is part of why I'm planning to start a Korean literature YouTube channel after I graduate. So many great works of Korean literature either have low-quality translations or don't have any at all, and I want to introduce those works to the wider world properly.

I still have a few months to go till graduation though, so in the meantime, I hope Han Kang's works, at least, get all the well-earned love and respect it deserves.

I had made a statement in other SNS, but not in Tumblr, so I will repeat the words:

Due to the unfortunate circumstance that has revealed itself in American politics with the election of Donald Trump, I cannot imagine how many of the fellow people I know will be directly affected. I fear for their safety, and wish to send all my love and empathy out to them.

I know it's frightening and I know it is depressing. I did not realise how dire the situation was, and even mistook the situation to be of Kamala already being the president. (woops)

However, on a serious note, one thing I have observed in Americans is their resilience and their unending passion in what they believe in... I hope you will all be safe, but I do not believe you will go down without a fight. You are strong, and I have seen strong Americans. I know you can resist, and I know you will remember who you are, and I know you will have a happy life one day because I really, truly believe in you.

In an unfortunate addition, I fear for the ripple effects of this political change, especially with South Korea and the United Kingdom. Both are known to follow the American footsteps in legal chatters, in fact practically the whole world does. Right now, there is a bit of a safety net in the UK due to the Labour party ruling, but the party alone cannot shelter us all from the bombshell that is to be unleashed.

Please, I beg people to hold on tight and fight for your rights and stance. I will love and support you from all my heart.

seeing these two pieces of news back to back has made me truly face up to just how fucked up entertainment companies are in korea, and how terrifying it is that they give in to the minority of harmful voices. we cant keep catering to these people, but companies will continue to for the sake of profit and good-standing, and it feels impossible for anything to change while that remains the priority.
