Note
is there any distinction between a shellcreeper and a koopa in your mario au
yes, there is! Shellcreepers are the extinct ancestor of koopas and their relatives. Some of their relatives strayed pretty far from the original design. (See cladogram below the cut)

Mario Day is comin' up in a couple weeks, so I took a little break and did the prime Mario cast in the style of Mallory Bash, from an old sketch I did a couple years ago.

Turtles Have Hair In The Mario World
So something people don't realize is turtles are capable of growing hair. Now while one might think it's just what I've dubbed the Boss Shell Creepers that have hair, it's not just them. Bowser and Bowser Junior obviously have hair, and so too do the Koopalings not all of them do. Roy and Wendy like many turtles don't have hair. But what about the other species of turtles like Koopas? That is the claim that turtles as a whole can grow hair.
Well in Super Mario Odyssey when you knock off a Hammer or Fire Brother's headgear you get to see that they have hair.
The Common Koopa also can grow hair as seen in Koopley and Kuzzle. Also, the reason I call them the Common Koopa is because of the following. Koopa Troopas are members of Bowser's army, and not all Koopas of this species let alone in general work for Bowser. Meanwhile simply calling them Koopas can make things confusing when talks about different Koopa species. With all that and the fact this species of Koopas is so common I've dubbed them the Common Koopa.
Anyways back on track. Lakitus are another species of turtles that have hair, and it's pretty common. In fact other members of the species like Lakilester have more obvious hair. I'd also note Morton's hair is like that of a Lakitu.
Now finally to mention the OVA, while non canon it this has many useful parallels to the games. For example, several Koopa Troopas in this animation can be seen having hair. This could indicate from the start all Koopas from the start have had the ability to grow hair.

Do you have an opinion on Koopa Troopas? They are going to have different variants in the upcoming Mario rpg remakes so I WONDERed if you had a specific favourite 🐢

The more I think on it, the more I adore the Rolla Koopas 😆 Pink cuties. Look at em; absolutely adorable. I used to quad skate too an the one thing I noticed is they don't have the rubber stoppers on their skates. So unless they are really good at the T-stop, they have fully committed. They will never stop rollin'. 🛼

The whole turtle tribe is varied and wacky, I think they're all so much fun. 🐢 Go lil koopas, go!

How do Piranha Plants look and act in Super Speculative Bros.? What about the fire spitting variant? Petey Piranha, too?
piranha plants are (unsurprisingly) carnivorous plants. In the wild, they’re pitfalls for prey larger than insects. Koopas have selectively bred and farmed them for aesthetics and usefulness as a trap. They can also digest organic matter very well, so they’re often used as trash bins. (Careless individuals might feed them indigestible things like glass and plastic) Throughout the year, the pitfall will close and bloom, attracting swarms of pollinators. The piranha plant will then grow new pitfall leaves, and the old ones will dry up and hang by its sides.
Tumblr media
Fire-spitting piranha plants were a genetic engineering project to create a piranha plant that could snare its prey instead of relying on going unnoticed. It wasn’t very effective. They don’t actually spit fire, but their powerful digestive fluid instead. This is still deadly, the projectiles from some varieties can cause chemical burns. At best, the target just gets covered in disgusting goo.

Petey piranha is the mascot of company that industrially farms piranha plants. He’s starred in many animated PSAs about not over-watering your plants or feeding them garbage.
