HELL YEAH I DID (spoilers for The Promise of the Masked Magician - crocus (azaIea))

It was really good! I'm lowkey dying that they haven't told us the prophecy (like come on Todoroki! Gimme the whole thing. You can't just say it's about Bakugou then NOT tell him) but I think it's funny as hell that Deku is living the Merlin plot. All the hints/forshadowing about Kirishima's dragon-ness are *chef's kiss* I cannot wait for that reveal and the Compress lore is wild

Last night I copied down a paragraph to point out specifically and it was this:

As long as Kirishima was still with him, none of the bullshit really mattered. He didn’t need to worry about what the extras were or weren’t doing. He didn’t need to worry about debts, or who would have to pay them. It was, quite literally, them against the world. It was okay that everything they’d gone through felt like a pointless waste of time, because it was. None of this was real. The only time that wasn’t wasted was the time they spent together, as the only two real things in the entire world.

That HIT dude. And that last sentence of this paragraph?!?!? Had me dead istg

When Bakugou immediately took that deal with Compress....... like brother that is NOT going to end well. Your ass is DEFINITELY gonna have to cash that favour and it will NOT be good. But I love that he's like "nah we'll be out of here by then" like bestie you're gonna have to complete the prophecy to get out of here

Anyway I had a great time and the cliffhanger was completely manageable! Excited for the next installment.

“Why are you a hero?”

Two boys, brilliant blond and rambunctious red, sit in an empty study room filled to the brim with all the world’s complex anxieties. For once, the tension in the air cannot be cut with the press of nitroglycerin hands or diamond-tipped fingers. 

Eijirou stares at his own lap where softly clasped hands hold each other, the pad of his thumb rubbing over the smooth skin of knuckles Katsuki has spent the last three months learning the shape of.  

“I guess…” Eijirou starts, “I thought, if I could recreate the feeling I got when Ashido saved me, for someone else, I would do it a thousand times over,” Ever-kind red eyes look up to seek Katsuki’s own softening carmine, “There’s something that happens when you’re frozen, and you think you’re about to die — that you should die, for being so weak, for being stupid enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time… And then, at the last second, a hero swoops you out of the way and saves the day.” 

The corner of Eijirou’s lips tips up in a half-smile. 

Katsuki wonders if Eijirou is picturing that small, dark-haired boy Katsuki has only seen pictures of. Sometimes, Katsuki wishes he had known Eijirou back then, has dreamed of being in Ashido Mina’s place and swooping the young boy out of harm's way to kiss frightened tears off soft cheeks and be the hero in Kirishima Eijirou’s story. Other times, Katsuki is so fucking glad he didn’t go to the same middle school as Eijirou because Katsuki knows he’d more likely be the reason to make Eijirou want to die in the first place.

“I think it restored my faith in myself, and in this society,” Eijirou continues wistfully, “Proved to me that there are good people with wills stronger than my own, who are willing to put their lives on the line for some random person they barely know — it made me want to live. Or, gave me something to live for.”

Katsuki knows the story, and is thankful to every imaginative heaven above, to Ashido Mina tenfold, for saving the boy that dares to sit next to him. He cannot imagine a world without Kirishima Eijirou, a world without sturdy thighs pressing into his own, lifting him up with a too-sharp grin and hardened fists, ‘I will be your unshakeable chariot.’  

Their lunch remains untouched.

“Do you still feel that way, after Aizawa-sensei’s lecture?” Katsuki has to ask.

Clasped hands tuck under Ejirou’s chin, sharp elbows digging into those very thighs Katsuki yearns for too much, “I actually feel a bit embarrassed,” And Katsuki can tell, Eijirou has a habit of curling his hulking form into something small when his insecurities leak through the cracks of his Unbreakable, “World’s not nearly as black and white as I thought. Never thought the duties of a hero could actually… What’s the word? ‘Contribute’? To the problem.”

“Yeah, that’s the right word.” 

Eijirou’s knee nudges his own, the warmth of a body Katsuki’s learning to love boring onto him for a short moment, “What about you, how are you feeling?” — ‘Cold,’ Katuski wants to say when Eijirou shifts slightly away, “If there’s anyone at this school who’s more passionate about becoming a hero, it’s you.”

Katsuki sniffs, “You mean, more passionate about being the best.”

“What’s the difference?”

“Oh, c’mon,” Katsuki scoffs as he turns his body to face Eijirou head-on, “We just sat through an hour discussing that in class.”

Eijirou shrugs, and his chin lolls over his knuckles in a tilt.

“Yeah, but,” He finally straightens up to meet Katsuki’s defensive stare, “I’m asking you, personally. What’s wrong with wanting to be the best?”

“Ugh, ‘the best,’” Katsuki feels so much disgust for the word that used to drive him, “Remember when you used to cheer me on for sayin’ that shit?”

“Remember when you used to be happier saying it?” 

And Katsuki — well, he feels like he’ll never understand the relaxed line of Eijirou’s shoulders when they’re like this. Katsuki is a nasty force to be met with hunched spines and averted eyes. He is a taunting, walking bomb who’s most likely to push down a person already familiar with the ground, rather than offer a guiding hand to teach about the sky.

Kirishima Eijirou is everything Bakugou Katsuki is not, and yet, every day, Eijirou offers his very human hand and Katsuki is too greedy not to take it.

“I am…” Katsuki struggles for a moment, before letting out a big sigh from his still-growing lungs, “Confused. I feel stupid,” His voice cracks on the last word.

Short, red eyebrows furrow, “Why?”

For once, it is Katsuki’s heart that explodes, and not his hands.

“Because how did I not know any of this!? How do we, as a whole fucking society, have all this data, and still operate within the same system in the same, exact fucking way? I mean, isn’t that the whole point of research? To find the problem and work towards a solution!” 

There’s tension at the root of his scalp, and Katsuki doesn’t realize it comes from his own gripping hands.

“What kind of lazy, bastard politicians do we have! Or, is it on us heroes to do something about it? And if so — why the hell do we only know how to physically fight!”

Katsuki’s lungs feel too small for his body. He feels like an underdeveloped kindling with gasoline drenched in every twig holding too big of a fire he cannot hold.

“I mean, yeah, yeah, we practice proper rescue etiquette, and how to be fuckin’ nice to a scared shitless child, but…” Something wet smears from his temple to his cheeks, and Katsuki does not know if it’s from the sweat of his dragging hands or the suspicious stinging in his eyes. 

He goes still as he thinks about all the sleep he’s lost since his kidnapping, and stares at the vast nothing beyond Eijirou’s shoulder.

“What about when they go home? What happens that night, when that same child won’t go to bed without screaming? When their head just replays the moment they almost died, over and over and over again — and they’re just supposed to, what?” He’s on autopilot, all flinging hands and helpless shrugs, “Go back to school, pretend they’re paying attention, and then just — what, do their homework?”

He looks back at Eijirou, “Come to terms with the fact that the world isn’t going to stop long enough for them to ‘move on,’ like everybody wants?”

Eijirou’s eyes mold with sympathy. Katsuki thinks the boy is too good for this rotten, uncaring world. Eijirou’s open heart is going to get him hurt — ‘doesn’t he get it?’

“And what about us, Eijirou?” Katuski feels like he’s pleading, “We just put our lives on the line for problems that will never fucking end, for a problem that’ll never get fucking solved, rinse and repeat until our own bodies break down with the amount of shit we’re hit with? By villains who are basically, according to fucking science, created by us? What kind of endless fucking machine is this! What is the fucking point! What was the fucking point of all of it!”

Eijirou looks at the trembling boy in front of him — a boy, not a hero because that’s what Bakugou Katsuki deserves to be before the glittering false gold of their school’s, their society’s, best — and he cannot help the tears that well up in his eyes. Eijirou has witnessed Katsuki scared, prideful, mean, kind, hopeful — but he has never seen Katsuki weighed down by so much doubt. 

Quietly, gently, Eijirou asks, “Do you still want to be a hero?”

The chuckle Katsuki lets out is empty, and Eijirou’s breath gets stuck in his throat at Katsuki’s cynical stare, “What even is a hero, anymore.”

My personal timeline as a multi shipper

Here’s my controversial MHA (I know I know) ship timeline. I see a pattern of simply liking a ship because the two characters had an interesting interaction or exclusive to Izuocha, where Ochako can only likes Izuku. This is in order by timeline. I want to to spread this to show people that you are not hated by 100% of a group of anybody. We are all multi-faceted beings. My ships are based on interesting dynamics not canon-ness thereby superiority. This list is based on a timeline, not my interest.

‘Shipping’ in my case is simply enjoying the characters in a fanart or fa fiction outside of canon which is deemed more than is needed to understand the charcters. Support romantic or otherwise fanart with mainly two characters basically. It doesn’t even mean I see how they would be together in canon. Before bakudeku, I read most of these at the same time. I felt I had to have one ship only at some points too which isn’t true.

Maybe shipping for me is just liking an aspect of a story.

Izuocha. I liked this ship because it seemed like it was going to be obviously canon. I enjoy a lot of canon-ships like NaruHina, KanaTanjiro or just about any of my favorite shoujo and boys love pairings. Also a few spare girls love comics too; cute! I just thought that’s how it was. First friend and supportive and obvious.

Kacchako. I enjoyed their fight in the Sports Festival arc of mha because Katsuki didn’t hold back. I agreed with most of the crowd, he’s /kind of/ insane in how he acts at his point in the series. I fully believed he would go Sasuke or Villain route in this part of the series. I liked that he didn’t treat her differently because she’s a girl despite his intentions. Ochako put up her best fight and found something new in herself that she hadn’t before; the wit and quick thinking to fight back against a super strong unrestrained Enemy. I ended up seeing a BEAUTIFUL fanart of him sitting at a desk and Ochako sitting at a wind that was amazingly rendered. I read a lot of— let’s just say extremely out of pocket fan fiction about this rare pair. I felt insecure about this ship because it got made fun of online. Also Bakugo’s ‘nothing frail about her’ comments in the relationship connection extras. Regardless, interesting, fun, imaginative, unexpected.

KiriBaku. This seems to be the mostly widely /accepted/ ship in my opinion. I feel like it has the most support in the American fandom. Kiri was super popular at the time I joined my hero and I was deep in the weeb-tok era of 2019 through 2021(anyone else miss the “Iwa-Chan, kageyama!/ I know that I’m gonna slaughter dis” sound? And OH the cosplays). MAN I miss it it was so fun and less dodgy than boring-ass takes and blind fighting on twitter. I was a bakudeku hater at this time because I blindly believed the death threats were true. I didn’t hate the ship personally feel deep down but I thought actual death threats would’ve been too far. I often dumped mean and repetitive comments on anti-bakudeku tiktoks. I really enjoyed an actor au where the author switched the moha characters to playing their Japanese voice actors. Baku go/okamoto really wanted to play a canon gay character in the drama they were actors in but Izuku got it first which caused his continued resentment of izuku because he assumed he was not gay. It was really fun and some of the fics were very memorable and wholesome. Good times! At the transition between these two ships the fandom was all happy and the fanfics were funny and Bakugou was being supportive of his friends in his own way at this point.

Bakudeku. The plot twist of the century. But, not really. See, I hated bakudeku mostly because I wanted to fit in with the popular opinion and simple “they hate each other!!”. In order to seem normal and not insane since it was so hated. Again, I already thought bakugo’s character because it humanizes a bully in a realistic way. I usually live for those crazy ass villains anyway; it’s just anime. Death Note??? But obviously, I never would have put Bakugou in Izuku together. Rewatching season 1 that shot was terrible as fuck and heart wrenching and I feel so bad again after watching and I can see why I absolutely hated Katsuki when I watched mha. I can see why people still hate him. Again, I started looking at the fanart out of spite and saw a lot of fanart with one of them looking at the other back and watching them from behind. It’s really true to the series. It is so heart wrenching to watch and read. That’s why I like reading it. I’ve read SOO many fics where either of them die mostly Izuku, because of the suicide comment, but eventually with the event of black whip, mostly Katsuki for obvious reasons. There’s a deep theme of saving and winning and even the horror of death when you love someone so obviously I was captivated. Some fics, and I mean A LOT, basically predicted word for word the hospital scenes. I don’t like ‘I know your secret power’ tropes, but it’s there. There’s just so much between them it’s crazy. The way /The Way You Used To by: edema ruh/ has like the exact hospital scenes that LATER!!!! Happened in the manga… the death, the emotional power-ups, the connection of a separate soulmate ( ‘nother person in your body thing like the vestiges) quirk, PLUS ofa transactions inspired by two heros that canonically seem like they’re about to happen. You’ve got the Volume cover and everything to show for it too. Themes of almost Spider-Man and Gwen???? I rewatched Spider-Man 2 and it’s like huh??? And also Izuku is inspired by spider-man as well? Oh SHIT, is bakugo Izuku’s failed save? I’m gonna be SO FUCKINNG MAD if that happens, but I’m one of those people who enjoys angst a lot at the same time and I will appreciate it. I’m so everything for this ship for this ship platonic friendship or not I may just ship their friendship

TodoIIda. Usually, I don’t find a lot of my ships seeming canon except for this one. I already know that any important relationship or friendship between characters can be shipped but since they aren’t seen interacting on screen much next to the scene where iida saves him instead of going ahead, it really stuck. That must have been Horikoshi’s intention because he came back to them recently like they matter to each other. I JUST remembered the stain arc and how IIda and Shouto’s can relate on wanting revenge. Iida’s motto to help someone anywhere any time relates to Todoroki’s helplessness as a child. They’re important to each other. Friends, family.

Togachako. I didn’t consider this a ‘ship’ per se until recently, but I was obsessed with how Toga wanted become Ochako and the people she loves also how they like the same boy I guess?? Izuku seems oblivious and somehow even unrelated to their relationship even though it started it. There was this one cosplay tiktok with a poppy sound on it and I was OB- SESSED. I told you I love me some crazy simpy villains and Toga is just that. Unexpected was how Ochako starts to focus on her specifically and want to save her. I was NOTTT expecting her to say she was jealous of her smile. I was so sad when Himi said she didn’t want to talk to Chako anymore so I was PUMPED to hear people spreading the misleading togacjako canon on twitter. Toga biromantic/sapphic vampire whose blood-sucking is like kissing, is getting blood from ochsko for the rest of her life. I don’t know if toga really cares anymore. I also enjoy their possible relationship to Yuki-onna. Would love if something came out of them in canon, though I just realized toga explicated said she wanted to go out with Izuku so why can’t she do it for ochako?

dabihawks. I was SO confused why people shipped this when they barely showed their interactions. I only realized when a mostly canon style fan manga dubbed did a dabihawks comic. I then realized they are are almost the same childhood reflections of each other, neglected, abused by their parents

As an end note, I learned that every ship dynamic has to be romantic, but usually it is because of recent fan culture. I’m 15 but I know a lot about older fandom because I was an avid Kaichou Wa Maid Sama fan and used the less popular fan fiction.net. People are a lot nicer on fanfixtion sites than on social media sites, I’ve learned also older fandoms didn’t get massively hated on like MHA does. There’s just more people in the world who watch now. Remember to be yourself because there’s always someone feeling just like you out there, I promise. Chaio;3

Bakugou Katsuki kicks the seventh rock that’s encountered his path in this hell of a street. He’s never been to this part of town, his cell service has never been so shit, and he’s convinced the last three people who’ve bumped into him haven’t showered in weeks.

He’s about to give up until he spots a vaguely familiar pair of blue sneakers. They’re torn, dirtied down into a shade of dull navy, but the four written initials still stretch across the midsole.

KH. NT. AT. 

The shoes are right, but the skin-wrapped skeleton of the body who wears them is someone Katsuki does not recognize. 

Dabi’s horrible rasp rings loud in Katsuki’s ears — ‘I’ve heard about you, it’s pretty easy to get info from hungry delinquents.’

Kemuri Hashiga and Nagai Tesaki, once bright and plump juniors, sit outside the worst halfway house Katsuki has ever fucking seen, passing around either a cigarette or a joint. 

The same boys who used to complain of their fathers’ smoking habits. 

‘Really? You don’t even keep up with the very kids that followed you around everywhere? Your ‘extras’? Man, maybe you are the perfect pick, huh. A little bully to quirk-less kids, you’ll fit in here just fine.’

Katsuki takes a deep breath, adjusts the hold of his wrapped bento, and stomps forward for answers. 

Kemuri’s black hair is wild as ever, but it’s the resigned look in his eyes that falters Katsuki’s step. 

“Long time, no see, Bakugou.”

And, Katsuki, well, he’s never been one to beat around the bush. He drops the towered bento between the two kids — ‘according to that patchwork son-of-a-bitch, they need to eat.’ — and demands, “What the fuck happened to you? You guys were rich.”

Long, spindly fingers snake around the bento like pale garden snakes. Katsuki suppresses a shiver, he never did like Nagai’s quirk — the sound his fingers would make when extending always reminded him of those overly-gory horror movies. 

Nagai doesn’t say anything. He won’t even look up, his face shadowed by greasy strings of hair that droop past his shoulders. 

Katsuki used to like his hair, it was always shiny and thick. Brown, with the most subtle highlights one could only see when it was spring and sunlight would beam from the classroom windows right over his seat. He used to complain of overheating during these times. Katsuki used to send small explosions around his chair to make him sweat.

‘I’m not like that anymore,’ Katsuki begs of himself. 

He squats down to their level and watches as the two tear into the bento like hungry wolves. 

He waits until they’ve had a few pieces of meat and some rice, “Where’s Akairo? I can’t find anything on him.”

“Dead.”

Katsuki whips his head to Kemuri, “What?”

“Yeah,” grains of rice dot the boy’s cheeks. Kemuri brings the bowl up to his face and licks the bowl clean, “Thought you knew. Dumbass made a deal to be some old fucker’s experiment — thought he’d get stronger, or something. He never got into a hero school, and he liked flying.”

Katsuki remembers. Akairo Tsubasa was a dragon-like mutant — ‘heteromorph, you can’t call ‘em that’ — who spent 90% of his day above ground. His favorite hero was Ryukyu, to which Katuski used to roll his eyes over and tell him, ‘There’s no use in idolizing a hero that can do the same thing as you. No one’s interested in what the world already has.’  

To his credit, Akairo usually would just laugh and respond with, ‘I don’t care about charts. I just want the license so I can fly without having to worry about getting fined or arrested!’

Katsuki latches onto the word, ‘experiment’. He can’t help but immediately think of the Nomus. 

“Was he killed?”

Kemuri nods, “Stain.”

‘Gods, no,’ Katsuki couldn’t explain it to himself, he couldn’t logicalize the cold feeling in his chest. If he were to be completely honest with himself, he wasn’t really friends with those three. He was their fucked-up cult leader and they were dumb enough, impressionable enough, hell, maybe insecure enough to have followed him around like loyal puppies. Half the time, he barely remembered their names — admittedly, that’s why it took him so long just to find them.

Katsuki sighs and looks at the building the two boys lean on. He studied the dilapidated state of the wood — not rotted, but splintered and discolored. Mismatched tree bark nailed hastily throughout like bandaids, the temporary last-minute fixes of an oozing, wounded thing. 

Katsuki clears his throat, “Why’re you two here, though. Did you run away from your homes?”

‘Were their homes as hostile as mine?’

The two have been scarfing down the contents of each bento bowl since the minute Katsuki arrived, but at this question, they both freeze. The knuckles of Nagai’s unstretched fingers turn white with the strength of his grip around the bowl.  

“We’re orphans,” Kemuri starts, and his voice is so low and strained, that Katsuki has to lean in closer, “Our parents died in a hero fight. Building caught on fire, there were no survivors.”

‘Gods,’ Katsuki rubs his eye, ‘It just keeps getting worse. How did I not hear any of this?’

“Why this place? One bad rainstorm and it’s going to fucking collapse.” 

Nagai hasn’t moved a single inch, and Kemuri shrugs, “Used to be one of the best, till heroes just kept flingin’ rocks and fuck-knows what else at it. A rainstorm taking this place down would be a blessing, at this point — insurance might then cover something.”  

Kemuri’s tone, for the first time since Katsuki’s heard, turns bitter and his mouth tips into an ugly snarl — one Katsuki doesn’t think he’s ever seen, not even when they were bullying kids in their middle school homeroom. “Fuckin’ heroes,” he spits, literally, over his shoulder, and down the concrete they sit on with a frothy splat, “Never watching where they fucking aim.”

And, Katsuki — well, he’s a boy with the worst kind of anger issues and there is an undying need to defend his line of work, defend the concept of, ‘the ends justify the means,’ because — “These villains never stop, heroes have to make last minute decisions and they can’t — ”

“ — You think I care?” 

Nagai’s voice has never been so loud. 

He’s finally looked up and those eyes immediately shame every defense to die in Katsuki’s throat. 

They’re angry, Nagai’s eyes — they’re pissed, but the set of his furrowed eyebrows speaks volumes of loss. 

The loss of his family, the loss of his home — of warm food in his belly and the mundanity of watching Sunday quirk-sports with his father on a worn suede couch. 

‘Yeah,’ Katsuki is right to be shamed. He’s never known loss, and though his house had never been warm, he cannot deny that the closest thing he might have to ‘a home’ awaits for him with the comradery of a hundred other kids, with the guarantee of a bright-eyed boy with too short eyebrows and too sharp teeth. 

Katsuki admits he’s never cared much for these two boys, a thing he wishes he had the capacity to change, but he is striving to be a hero, and justice must be served.

With his unending resolve, Katsuki asks, “Who was the villain responsible for your parents’ death? I swear, I’ll fuckin’ get ‘em.”

Nagai’s burning eyes turn cold and a hopeless tear escapes to trail down his sunken cheek,  “Endeavor.”
