What is the Keto Diet?
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here. A lot of people want to lose weight and fat, but if they don't follow to a proper diet, they might not succeed in their weight loss efforts. So today we will discuss about keto diet for you. First we understand about the ketogenic (keto) diet, it is a high-fat, very low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet. It decreases blood sugar and insulin levels while shifting the body's metabolism from carbs to fat and ketones.
Tumblr media
How keto diet works?
To understand how ketogenic diets deliver their amazing weight loss results and the corresponding downsides, so first you have to understand how the Kito diet plan works? Keto diets depend on getting the body to switch from using glucose obtained from carbohydrates for energy, to ketones which are produced by the liver using stored fat. This diet will more effective than normal diet, because it takes more calories to use fat for energy than it does to use carbs.
What foods include keto diet?
In keto diet include fish and seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and zucchini, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products etc. These are low in carbs and appropriate for the keto diet. We dont include no vegetables, fruit, or grains.
So this is about keto diet. Do you want to switch to keto diet, you also understand their risk.
Nutrient deficiencies With no vegetables, fruit, or grains in your diet, you are depriving your body not just of carbohydrates but also critically needed micronutrients and vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, iron, and vitamins B, C, K.
Liver problems The enormous quantity of fat that the keto diet requires you to consume places a very heavy burden on the liver, which can cause dangerous liver problems.
Kidney issues This is a big one. The kidneys have one major job, and that is to metabolize protein.
Gut ill-health The absence of fiber in the diet, since high-fiber foods like grains and legumes are banned, leads directly to constipation and gut health issues.

Beef Stew with Gremolata
Many people find cooking at home to be intimidating. But that's precisely why I enjoy searching for and utilizing all of these shortcut ideas to make amazing renditions of traditional recipes. A beautiful dinner that will wow your special dinner guest, made much better if it comes together quickly.
The green garnish on top of this meal is called Gremolata. Garlic, lemon zest, and chopped parsley are the ingredients of gremolata. This dish was transformed into an incredible, incredibly delicious stew with a simple addition.

Update on the 3,4 year long battle against anemia.
I saw a doctor today and when I explained that I'm still bleeding for a week each month, she thought that it shouldn't be possible with an IUD.
Well, turns out the UID had misplaced itself and was slowly coming out through cervix. We had to reinstall a new one (hurt like fucking hell this time) and let's hope it stays where it's supposed to.
We are unsure why the UID had moved. Either I'm one of the unlucky persons whith a bitch of an uterus which will resist an IUD and always pushes it out, OR the last surgery with the UID installed made the uterus convulse so much and so long that the IUD moved, too.
I hope is the 2nd option because if I'm to have an UID installed back every 2-3 years, it's going to cost me a lot.
I also got a prescription for a birth control pill, as the doctor said it should be safe for me despite my genetic risk factors. I'll start to use it together with the IUD if the UID itself doesn't work like it should. I'll know more in February-March.
There's no other option for iron intake than starting to eat iron heavy food. Turns out that when I was on a keto diet, pretty much everything I ate was high in iron. So I have to bring those things back to my diet.
Fingers crossed that the workplace healthcare pays also the IUD installation. If not, I have to pay for it and it's going to be hundreds of euros....

👗 & 🍈
(the way I RAN to your ask box I am so shameless)
hehehe at least we are shameless in good company
👗.
The skirt fits well enough around his waist and hips, but Buck's should have factored for the fact he's a lot taller than the average woman. It's not a terrible oversight, the skirt is long enough by design that it's still decent, but the hem sits high enough on his thighs that it leaves a distinct band of pale skin above the tan line indicating where his shorts usually sit. He'd expected to feel exposed, especially given where this train of thought had started, but Buck hadn't been prepared for it to be so eyecatching, and it sends a shiver through him.
🍈.
Buck might jump on faddy diets like he doesn’t recognise that they’re all scams to sell meal kits and supplements, but the periods of paleo or keto or whatever it is his favourite fitness influences are sponsored by in a given month never last long in the face of Bobby’s firehouse cooking and Chris’s dinnertime requests and the enjoyment Buck takes in sharing good food with his family.
But perhaps if Eddie had paid slightly more attention, he might not have been caught so off guard by the bulky expanse of Buck’s chest having taken on a soft curve, might have noticed a quiver there and made his excuses before Buck took to the treadmill and Eddie found himself hypnotised by the unexpected undulation.
He’s jolted from his thoughts by the sound of the treadmill slowing down, focuses back on reality just in time to see Buck hop off the belt and then rub at his chest, making a low noise in the back of his throat.

This news item is about a small (10 people each in test and control groups) study linking erythritol (AKA “reducing sugar”) to blood clotting in otherwise healthy individuals. While the small sample suggests further study and not panic, it builds on an earlier study that correlated factors in a much larger sample.
In other words, if you have other risks of clotting or stroke, maybe stop at one item containing this stuff and don’t have multiple in one day.

CW: weight loss, diabetes, medical shit
So, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 8 years ago. At the time, I was close to 400lbs and knew I needed to make a change. I found an amazing doctor and was put on a medically supervised diet, which led to losing over 100 lbs. I got down to about 270 and felt better than I ever had in my adult life. Because the diet was also keto (and thus contained little sugar) my diabetes was managed and my A1C range was below even pre-diabetic levels.
But I couldn't translate it into a sustainable lifestyle, so I ended up slowly gaining it back. Today, I'm 360 lbs. I just checked my blood sugar -- after eating a fucking salad for dinner -- and it was 365 mg/dL 😳
I need to change, or I'm going to die. Like, there's no two ways about it. So, I just got prescribed Mounjaro to both help with my blood sugar and lose weight. I'm waiting for a prescription for a continuous glucose monitor to be able to know my blood sugar at all times. I'm also going back on metformin and figuring out what my lifestyle is going to look like food-wise, but it's gotta be different. It has to be.
I'm scared that I'll yo-yo in weight again, but between therapy, a nutritionist (which I need to find still), and medication I'm at least a little more hopeful than I'd otherwise be.
I want to feel good again, physically; I'm so goddamn tired all the time and I know this is a huge part of it. I also hate the way I look, but that's a separate issue, and losing weight before didn't do a lot to change that, so I'm mostly just including it here because I'd be lying if it wasn't a factor.
Either way, changes are coming. Hopefully good ones.

The Ketogenic Diet Market: Statistics & Facts
Tumblr media
Introduction to the Ketogenic Diet
The ketogenic diet, often referred to as "keto," is a low-carb, high-fat dietary regimen that has gained significant popularity in recent years. The primary principle of the keto diet is to induce a state of ketosis in the body, where fat becomes the primary source of energy instead of carbohydrates. By drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fats, the body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. Additionally, it transforms fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain.
Exploring the Ketogenic Diet Market
The keto diet market has witnessed exponential growth over the past decade. According to data from Statista, the global ketogenic diet market size was valued at approximately USD 9.07 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach USD 15.64 billion by 2027. This surge is driven by an increasing awareness of the diet’s benefits, a growing number of health-conscious consumers, and the rise of obesity and related health issues. Market trends indicate a robust demand for keto-friendly products such as snacks, beverages, supplements, and meal replacements.
Benefits and Challenges of the Ketogenic Diet
Benefits
Weight Loss: One of the most touted benefits of the ketogenic diet is its effectiveness in promoting weight loss. By limiting carbohydrate intake and increasing fat consumption, the body is forced to burn stored fat for fuel, leading to weight loss.
Improved Blood Sugar Control: The keto diet has been shown to improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity, making it beneficial for individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Enhanced Mental Clarity and Focus: Many proponents of the keto diet report improved mental clarity and focus, as ketones are a potent source of fuel for the brain.
Increased Energy Levels: By providing a steady supply of energy from fats, the keto diet helps prevent energy crashes that are often associated with high-carb diets.
Challenges
Keto Flu: When starting the diet, some people experience flu-like symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, and irritability, often referred to as the "keto flu."
Nutrient Deficiencies: The restrictive nature of the diet can lead to nutrient deficiencies if not carefully planned.
Digestive Issues: Some individuals may experience digestive issues such as constipation due to the low fiber content of the diet.
Sustainability: Maintaining a ketogenic diet can be challenging in the long term due to its restrictive nature.
The Role of the Ketogenic Diet in Weight Management and Overall Health
The ketogenic diet has proven to be an effective tool for weight management. Studies have shown that individuals on a keto diet tend to lose more weight and maintain it longer compared to those on low-fat diets. The diet's ability to reduce appetite by controlling hunger hormones is a key factor in its success. Moreover, the keto diet has potential benefits for various health conditions, including epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and certain types of cancer. By reducing inflammation and improving metabolic health, the keto diet can positively impact overall health and wellness.
The Future of the Ketogenic Diet
The future of the ketogenic diet looks promising, with ongoing research and emerging trends pointing towards continued growth. Market predictions suggest an increase in the availability of keto-friendly products, making it easier for consumers to adhere to the diet. Additionally, advancements in personalized nutrition and technology are likely to play a significant role in the development of tailored keto plans and products. As more scientific research is conducted, new insights into the long-term effects and potential therapeutic applications of the ketogenic diet will continue to emerge.
Practical Tips for Incorporating the Ketogenic Diet
Start Slow: Gradually reduce your carbohydrate intake while increasing your fat consumption to allow your body to adapt to the new fuel source.
Plan Your Meals: Planning your meals in advance can help you stay on track and avoid reaching for non-keto foods.
Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is crucial, as the keto diet can lead to increased water loss.
Monitor Your Macros: Keep track of your macronutrient intake to ensure you are staying within the recommended ranges for carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Include Electrolytes: Incorporate foods rich in electrolytes, such as leafy greens, avocados, and nuts, to prevent imbalances.
Be Patient: Give your body time to adjust to the diet and don’t get discouraged by initial side effects such as the keto flu.
Conclusion
The ketogenic diet offers a unique and effective approach to weight management and overall health. With its growing popularity and market expansion, keto is more accessible than ever. By understanding its benefits and challenges, and following practical tips for incorporation, individuals can leverage the power of the ketogenic diet to achieve their health and wellness goals. As ongoing research continues to unlock new insights, the future of the ketogenic diet holds exciting possibilities for both consumers and the health industry.

What popular food/ingredient(s) do you despise with your entire being? Mine is alliums (minus garlic, love that stuff) and nuts (in my defense I am mildly allergic)
Common? None, really. I didn't like Natto, but that's an acquired taste even in Japan where it's something of a staple. Also don't like Foie Gras, but again, that's Rich People Food and also uncommon.
What I DO despise with my whole being is people's attitudes toward food and ingredients.
Food is incredibly subjective, and that's not accounting for things like allergies, diabetes, sensory issues, eating disorders, and a bazillion other things that affect what one can or cannot eat. What we like to eat or can eat doesn't often come down to conscious choice; we either do or don't like something, can or can't afford it, or can or can't consume it. I will defend 'picky' eaters with my life, and people who like to say others are fat bc they're lazy and eat 'junk food' all the time are really exposing their complete lack of understanding things like the socioeconomic factors that prevent people from eating 'well' (Google 'Food Desert', and be apalled that places like this exist. In major population centers in the US). If you work two jobs just to keep the lights on and your family housed, and your partner also works, where are you gonna get the time and energy to cook three meals a day? Or even do meal prep? Throw kids into the mix and that puts cooking 'healthy' food even further out of reach. But people like to act as if spending four bucks on an 8oz box of chickpea rotini pasta because they're on the 'keto diet' makes them morally superior to everyone else, and healthier. In reality they're probably just a snob who's abusing a medical diet designed for diabetics to try and induce a metabolic state that is DANGEROUS to a non-diabetic, or they're significantly misguided, at best.
I could go on, God could I ever go on, but shit like THAT is what I despise with my whole being. You can hate alliums all you want, that's perfectly fine. I'll even support vegans and those paleo folks, because what they put in their bodies is their choice. But when they act like anyone else is a morally bankrupt degenerate, it makes me want to bite and kill.

I'm literally just Some Guy but I think the reason Americans are fat is hyper-capitalism
Genetics also play a major part so no, not having capitalism wouldn't get rid of obesity and that's perfectly fine, but the environmental factors that cause weight gain are another thing
See, in the 80s the sugar lobby spent a lot of money promoting the idea that fat is to blame for health issues and weight gain over sugar, lobbied the FDA to not include daily sugar requirements on nutrition labels, and fought to get sugar into basically all our food, a lot of it. It's really really easy to see from that alone how weight gain in the population would increase.
Then our jobs changed, became more sedentary, but also we have less time to ourselves for exercise or outdoor activities. Solid 9-5 jobs aren't much of a thing anymore, most people are working longer days or irregular hours that are hard to plan around and there's less time to prepare full meals with fresh groceries.
Obviously inflation makes buying healthy food even harder. Cheap meals, let alone quick ones, usually aren't the healthiest. Our healthcare system means if you do want help losing weight you need to pay to ask a doctor about it. The very poorly regulated diet/wellness/supplement industries make us fatter by lying about new 'healthy' foods, pills, and diet habits that can't be sustained and make us gain back more weight. But these industries make massive amounts of money (why not sell 'keto' and 'reduced fat' versions of everything?) so there's huge incentive to keep pushing them.
And, of course, the welfare system is messed up and getting out of poverty is extremely difficult, but the poorer you are the stronger all these other factors affect you.
Like I said there's nothing actually wrong with fat people existing and getting over fatphobia is more important than placing blame, but I still feel a certain way about the perception of Americans (especially by people in the U.S. government) being that we're fat lazy idiots when our environment seems to have set us up for decades of weight gain

I won’t lie your constant exposure to carnivore diet and other things you talked about have intrigued me but I’m currently a poor uni student with no job rn. Do you have any small tips for me on a low budget? I know I should be more specific about the advise but I’m asking as a catch all I guess. Sorry if I’m being a bother
(Sorry for the ramble I get sidetracked easily)
You're not bothering me. To some degree my advice will depend on whether you're a man or woman and what animal products you're willing to include/exclude. The "purest" form of carnivore is only red meat (meat from ruminant animals such as beef, lamb, elk, venison, goat, etc) with no dairy and no eggs. If that's not your style then include whatever you like. HOWEVER. I strongly recommend making fatty red meat the primary food, as well as eggs and butter if you like them and have no allergies. A lot of people think that the trick to keto/carnivore is that it's a low carb and high protein diet, but in fact the key to carnivore is that it is a high fat diet. Fat is the body and brain's optimal fuel source, so make sure you eat a lot of it. Lean meats like poultry and lean beef/pork cuts will not produce good results. If you're a woman, you will likely find that a caloric ratio of about 80% fat to 20% protein will feel the best. It is unclear exactly why women seem to benefit so much from this while men don't see much difference, but this means that women seeking this so-called "high fat carnivore" will have to supplement their meat with extra fat sources such as butter or fat trimmings. Personally, I get beef fat trimmings from a local butcher and cook them with each meal. If you're not a woman you can still do this, but it may not give much benefit over just eating meat normally (although there are male athletes who report that high fat is better for them, so for men it may come down to activity level). My theory for why women thrive more on a higher fat ratio is that large megafauna, most of which are now extinct, likely had a fat-to-muscle ratio that was closer to what the female body needs to support optimal hormonal and reproductive health. In the evolutionary timeline, these animals have not been gone for long and there's no reason to assume our biological processes would have evolved to be fully adapted to their absence yet. That's just my speculation though.
Anyway, for affordability, I think the most obvious answer is to shop the sales on everything and learn to work with cheap cuts of meat. I personally buy my beef by the animal, so I end up with a small handful of the prized cuts such as ribeyes and strip loins, and a whole lot of roasts, ribs, and ground beef. as a university student you do not have the financial bandwidth to do this, so you are stuck searching for the cheaper cuts like chuck, shank, top/bottom round, sirloin tip, as well as ground beef. all of these cuts can make delicious meals, especially if you opt to continue using seasonings (i personally do not, but neither do i begrudge those who are unwilling to give them up). these cuts are leaner, but if you add extra fat (trimmings or butter) then you can still get a good caloric ratio out of it.
if you or anyone you know has a Costco (or equivalent store) membership, you can also buy wholesale primal cuts. upfront cost is a bit high, but the price per pound is significantly cheaper than grocery stores. you can get brisket for like $2/lb at Costco
chicken is generally pretty cheap, especially if you buy the cheaper cuts like drumsticks and thighs. but again, it's very lean so be mindful of that. same goes for pork. also salmon is a really good and fatty option if you like fish.
i also save the melted fat which comes off when I cook beef fat, and reuse that whenever i need cooking oil for a different meal, so i don't burn through store bought tallow/lard or butter.
one of the biggest factors in determining your cost will be whether or not you are fussy about conventional vs pasture raised meat. if you are happy to eat conventional, then your costs will be significantly lower than if you insist on pastured products. as far as the impact on your health, there isn't much information about the difference between the two, i know people who eat conventional and others who eat pastured, they all feel good. for myself, and many people who choose pastured products, it's an ethical decision more than anything.
lastly, again i don't know your financial situation but if you have some wiggle room, you can look into an online butcher such as butcherbox, moink, betterfed, and others. the meat is a bit more wholesale so the price per pound tends to come out much cheaper than buying from a grocery store, however this again, like Costco, has a higher upfront cost.
i hope this information is helpful! let me know if you have any other questions and i'll do my best to answer them (hopefully with less rambling next time).
