What is the Keto Diet?
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here. A lot of people want to lose weight and fat, but if they don't follow to a proper diet, they might not succeed in their weight loss efforts. So today we will discuss about keto diet for you. First we understand about the ketogenic (keto) diet, it is a high-fat, very low-carbohydrate, and moderate-protein diet. It decreases blood sugar and insulin levels while shifting the body's metabolism from carbs to fat and ketones.
Tumblr media
How keto diet works?
To understand how ketogenic diets deliver their amazing weight loss results and the corresponding downsides, so first you have to understand how the Kito diet plan works? Keto diets depend on getting the body to switch from using glucose obtained from carbohydrates for energy, to ketones which are produced by the liver using stored fat. This diet will more effective than normal diet, because it takes more calories to use fat for energy than it does to use carbs.
What foods include keto diet?
In keto diet include fish and seafood, meat and poultry, non-starchy vegetables like bell peppers, broccoli, and zucchini, avocados, berries, nuts and seeds, eggs, high-fat dairy products etc. These are low in carbs and appropriate for the keto diet. We dont include no vegetables, fruit, or grains.
So this is about keto diet. Do you want to switch to keto diet, you also understand their risk.
Nutrient deficiencies With no vegetables, fruit, or grains in your diet, you are depriving your body not just of carbohydrates but also critically needed micronutrients and vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, iron, and vitamins B, C, K.
Liver problems The enormous quantity of fat that the keto diet requires you to consume places a very heavy burden on the liver, which can cause dangerous liver problems.
Kidney issues This is a big one. The kidneys have one major job, and that is to metabolize protein.
Gut ill-health The absence of fiber in the diet, since high-fiber foods like grains and legumes are banned, leads directly to constipation and gut health issues.

TIPS
Carry yourself like you're skinny, even if you're not thus has helped me lose weight and the one day I didn't I gained weight. If you carry yourself like you're skinny you'll trick your brain and start losing weight faster for example
"Can you hand me-" wait but skinny girls would just get up and get it so follow with the "never mind I got it"
"Can you make me-" they'll put extra calories in it and you need the steps "never mind ill make it"
Eventually you won't ask anymore
Walk like your skinny too, this fatty lazy walking isn't burning calories walk like a model fast, and confident
This also tricks other people in thinking you're confident with your weight and body so you can keep losing and losing and no one will notice and if they do "oh I'm trying this new diet for tiktok" then post a video of your before and after results and pick up some random healthy diet but keep it consistent when someone asks what diet you did remember the name
"What diet did you do?"
"Oh I did the keto diet and a couple chloe ting workouts you should try it! It was really fun!"
Keep making up different diets you're "following" and when you get through them all stick with your favorite as the lie
For the Ana's that keep a notebook buy two of the same notebook in one you'll write down your actual ana foods and all your pro ana stuff and the other write down a normal food and an inspirational quote or something normalish
For my girlie that love a good bath (especially ones that that's your only escape from your family like me) limit it to one bath a day or week and for the rest showers only sitting/ lying down is not gonna burn calories but if you're the kind that takes multiple baths a week slowly take it down so nobody gets suspicious and that way you'll build a habit keep the number of baths a week you have in your journal (ana journal for previous tip) that way you'll know when you've taken a bath and when you've showered
Ana's in highschool if you can't drive walk if possible if you're like me and live somewhere where walking home isn't an option walk other times like to the end of your road and back for me I walk 2 streets over to the river then I walk down the river well on weekends since I have kids or walk to the store if there's one by your house they just built a dollar general by mine so if possible I will be walking there
I'm a hypocrite about this next one but so is everyone else don't weigh yourself every single day once a week is good just makes sure not to weigh before you use the bathroom, after you eat or after you shower it adds up instead find a pair of jeans that are a size or even two sizes to small and try them on every day until you can wear them I'm currently a size 12/14 and I do this with a size 6/8
To my Ana's in college (this one is me) if you live on campus take the opportunity and walk/jog probably don't run you don't wanna go to class sweaty and smelly but you do you or if you're college is like mine and all your classes are in the same building lie to your family about your class times and go to the park or the gym after class I prefer the park bc it's beautiful and there's usually nobody there (this goes for highschool Ana's that have a car too say you're going to a friend's house)
Strict families/make you eat at the table you already know the napkin rules but one thing a lot of people forget is to fake chew when you "take a bite" and then spit it in the napkin don't chew the food that adds calories I read somewhere you take in almost a third of the calories from chew and spit so don't chew the food purposefully get some on your face get a napkin wipe it off and spit the unchewed bite into the napkin now here's where it gets a little gross don't put the whole napkin in your pocket just the food (unless it's like rice or something that can fall easy) this way you can use the same napkin again. If you're forced to go out and all they have is the napkins they put the Silverware in this especially works for that and you'll get lucky If you park beside the bushes bc then you can feed the animals your pocket food make sure to walk in the back when doing this so no one sees always wear laces and make sure one is untied when leaving the restaurant and stop to tie it while you do that throw the food as fast as possible before anyone notices also everyone knows about the cut and push don't do this eith finger foods at a restaurant tear it don't cut it with a fork DONT FORGET KETCHUP IS YOUR BEST FRIEND don't get any mayo based condiments (ranch, honeymustard, bbq) only ketchup or steak seasoning (0-25cal per tbsp)
Workouts, either wake up before everyone or go to sleep way after everyone nothing happens over night so try and slowly change it so you're not exhausted do an hour workout for this point (I do a flexibility stretch followed by a chloe ting then a Pamela reif cardio) then you can weigh then shower and say "oh I just woke up" ALSO DO THE WORKOUT IN YOUR PAJAMAS that way if they ask why you're sweaty/stink tell them you get night sweats and try and wake up before everyone to shower bonus points for if you have a thick blanket
Start picking up extra chores again little by little so nobody suspects anything and they think you're just being helpful if they notice you haven't eaten tell them you got distracted bc you like cleaning that way the house is clean and you're losing and they think you have an amazing new Hobbie all though it turns you into the "clean freak" of the family just battle that with the "at least I'm not a slob"
I hope you stuck around this long bc I just had a great idea!!! Meal time you sit eith your family at the table you spit your food into the napkin, it's winter/fall or just straight up cold in your house you have on a big sweater/hoodie under that sweater you have a fanny pack this way your pockets don't get bulgy and the sweater hides the pack half way through the meal (occasionally) say you have to pee or something "I drank way to much water I'll be right back" or something along those lines empty the fanny in the toilet and flush
I've been doing these for 9 years and they've really helped me and the only one in my family that knows is my husband and that's only bc I told him in highschool (I've had this since I was 11)

Hello again it's me sorry if I'm being annoying I'm just so tired of doctors and want to take my health into my own hands. Anyways I recently took your advice but only ate sardines, eggs, saltwater, tea and regular water without meat (couldn't afford it currently) and to make a long story i felt like actual garbage I had night and day palpations, dizziness, fatigue, irritable mood swings, heavy breathing, leg cramps and so fourth ,But then I ate garbage (McDonald) and woke up without palpations and had good sleep like wtf??? So yeah I guess my body is too accustomed to garbage so I have to gently ween myself off of it before I try anything new anyways thanks again for all the advice and sorry again for being annoying..
(Not relevant but I had to fish sandwiches and a few sips of a vanilla milkshake)
That sounds pretty spot on for transition symptoms. If you are coming from a carbohydrate-heavy diet into a zero carb diet, your body will be forced into ketosis, which is the metabolic state of utilizing fatty acids to produce ketones in the liver, which are then burned for energy by the body. When you eat carbs, your body will never use fatty acids for energy and will instead just store them, and you will always be in a state of glycolysis, or carb-burning. Most modern people have been in glycolysis for almost their entire lives, as only breastfed babies stay in ketosis, and then that ends once they start eating the carb-based modern diet. Because of this, lack of use means that your body doesn't know how to make and utilize ketones efficiently. It has to learn how to do this, which can take as little as four days or as long as two weeks, depending on the individual.
During that time where the body is acclimating to this new way of functioning, you can feel all sorts of awful. This transition period is most commonly known as "keto flu." It ranges in symptoms. Everything you experienced is a symptom, and a couple others include skin rashes, nausea and diarrhea. Essentially the body is flipping out trying to figure out how to use this new fuel source, and at first it will be bad at it. But don't worry, those symptoms are transient and they won't do any long term damage to you. However, if you find them to be unbearably severe, what you can do instead is back off and transition into the diet slowly. Keep your carbs, but increase your animal-based food intake, and over a period of time start reducing your carbs while increasing your meat intake. It can help minimize the negative effects.
Also, lots of fat and electrolytes are your friend.
I would highly recommend looking into the videos of Dr. Ken Berry, Judy Cho, and Bella the Steak and Butter Gal on youtube. They have lots of overview videos with tips/tricks, advice, and pitfalls to avoid when starting the diet or trying to make adjustments to optimize it. Between them they have far more knowledge than I do. Not to say I don't like answering questions, but I want to make sure you're in the best hands possible :)

What is the trick to losing weight on keto?
ready to jumpstart your weight loss journey with a keto diet? download our free keto ebook for recipes, meal plans, and expert tips. start your journey to a healthier you today!
The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate diet that can be an effective way to lose weight for some people. Here are some tips to help you lose weight on keto:
Calculate your macros: To achieve ketosis, you need to limit your carbohydrate intake to 20-50 grams per day and consume a moderate amount of protein based on your body weight and activity level. Use a keto calculator to determine your daily macronutrient goals.
Focus on healthy fats: On a keto diet, you should aim to get 70-80% of your calories from healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, and fatty fish. Avoid unhealthy fats such as trans fats and highly processed vegetable oils.
Choose high-quality protein sources: When choosing protein sources, opt for high-quality, minimally processed options such as grass-fed beef, wild-caught fish, organic poultry, and eggs.
Eat plenty of non-starchy vegetables: Non-starchy vegetables are low in carbohydrates and high in fiber, making them a great addition to a keto diet. Examples include leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, and peppers.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water is important for overall health and can help you feel full and satisfied on a keto diet.
Be consistent: Consistency is key when it comes to weight loss on keto. Stick to your daily macronutrient goals and avoid cheat days or meals that could throw you out of ketosis.
Remember, weight loss is a complex process that involves many factors, including genetics, lifestyle, and overall health. It's important to work with a healthcare professional to determine if the ketogenic diet is right for you and to ensure you are meeting your nutrient needs while on the diet.

Diets Don’t Work? Here’s How To Lose Weight Without Going On One 📝
📌 You’ve tried all the diets: low-carb, keto, intermittent fasting, but the results never last. You lose some weight, then life gets busy, and it all comes back. Frustrating, right?
➡️ I know how it feels. Diets make you feel restricted like you’re constantly counting calories, and eventually, it just doesn’t work. It’s hard to keep up when you’re busy with work, family, and everything else. But here’s the truth: you don’t need a strict diet to lose weight.
➡️ Instead of following restrictive diets, focus on these simple, sustainable habits that make weight loss easier without feeling deprived.
1️⃣ Portion Control Over Calorie Counting
➡️ Forget obsessing over calorie numbers. Focus on controlling your portion sizes instead. Eat until you’re satisfied, not stuffed.
💡Use smaller plates to trick your brain into thinking you’re eating more. Start with one serving, and if you’re still hungry after 20 minutes, have more.
2️⃣ Fill Your Plate With Veggies First
➡️ Vegetables are low in calories and high in fiber, keeping you full longer without the extra calories. Filling up on veggies first helps you manage your weight naturally.
💡Start your meals by filling half your plate with veggies. Then, add your protein and carbs. This simple trick will help you eat fewer calories without feeling hungry.
3️⃣ Focus On Protein To Keep You Full
➡️ Protein is your best friend when it comes to weight loss. It keeps you feeling full, boosts your metabolism, and helps you maintain muscle while losing fat.
💡Add a source of lean protein to every meal, like chicken, fish, tofu, or beans. It’ll help keep you satisfied and prevent mindless snacking.
4️⃣ Don’t Cut Out Your Favorite Foods
➡️ Restricting yourself leads to cravings and binge eating. Enjoy your favorite foods in moderation, and you won’t feel deprived. It’s all about balance.
💡Plan a day each week where you enjoy your favorite meal guilt-free. This way, you don’t feel restricted and can still stay on track with your goals.
5️⃣ Move More, Even If It’s Not “Exercise”
➡️ You don’t need a hardcore workout routine to lose weight. Simply move more, take the stairs, walk during lunch, and play with your kids. The small things add up.
💡Set a daily step goal (start with 7,000 steps). It’s an easy way to burn extra calories without dedicating time to the gym.
➡️ Diets don’t work long-term because they aren’t built for real life. By making small, manageable changes, you’ll lose weight naturally without feeling like you’re missing out. Let’s make it simple.
📌 P.S. Know someone who’s tired of dieting and not seeing results? Repost this to help them out ♻️If you want more sustainable weight loss tips, join my weekly newsletter: https://marcomarconii.ck.page/eac0f41c6a 📬

I won’t lie your constant exposure to carnivore diet and other things you talked about have intrigued me but I’m currently a poor uni student with no job rn. Do you have any small tips for me on a low budget? I know I should be more specific about the advise but I’m asking as a catch all I guess. Sorry if I’m being a bother
(Sorry for the ramble I get sidetracked easily)
You're not bothering me. To some degree my advice will depend on whether you're a man or woman and what animal products you're willing to include/exclude. The "purest" form of carnivore is only red meat (meat from ruminant animals such as beef, lamb, elk, venison, goat, etc) with no dairy and no eggs. If that's not your style then include whatever you like. HOWEVER. I strongly recommend making fatty red meat the primary food, as well as eggs and butter if you like them and have no allergies. A lot of people think that the trick to keto/carnivore is that it's a low carb and high protein diet, but in fact the key to carnivore is that it is a high fat diet. Fat is the body and brain's optimal fuel source, so make sure you eat a lot of it. Lean meats like poultry and lean beef/pork cuts will not produce good results. If you're a woman, you will likely find that a caloric ratio of about 80% fat to 20% protein will feel the best. It is unclear exactly why women seem to benefit so much from this while men don't see much difference, but this means that women seeking this so-called "high fat carnivore" will have to supplement their meat with extra fat sources such as butter or fat trimmings. Personally, I get beef fat trimmings from a local butcher and cook them with each meal. If you're not a woman you can still do this, but it may not give much benefit over just eating meat normally (although there are male athletes who report that high fat is better for them, so for men it may come down to activity level). My theory for why women thrive more on a higher fat ratio is that large megafauna, most of which are now extinct, likely had a fat-to-muscle ratio that was closer to what the female body needs to support optimal hormonal and reproductive health. In the evolutionary timeline, these animals have not been gone for long and there's no reason to assume our biological processes would have evolved to be fully adapted to their absence yet. That's just my speculation though.
Anyway, for affordability, I think the most obvious answer is to shop the sales on everything and learn to work with cheap cuts of meat. I personally buy my beef by the animal, so I end up with a small handful of the prized cuts such as ribeyes and strip loins, and a whole lot of roasts, ribs, and ground beef. as a university student you do not have the financial bandwidth to do this, so you are stuck searching for the cheaper cuts like chuck, shank, top/bottom round, sirloin tip, as well as ground beef. all of these cuts can make delicious meals, especially if you opt to continue using seasonings (i personally do not, but neither do i begrudge those who are unwilling to give them up). these cuts are leaner, but if you add extra fat (trimmings or butter) then you can still get a good caloric ratio out of it.
if you or anyone you know has a Costco (or equivalent store) membership, you can also buy wholesale primal cuts. upfront cost is a bit high, but the price per pound is significantly cheaper than grocery stores. you can get brisket for like $2/lb at Costco
chicken is generally pretty cheap, especially if you buy the cheaper cuts like drumsticks and thighs. but again, it's very lean so be mindful of that. same goes for pork. also salmon is a really good and fatty option if you like fish.
i also save the melted fat which comes off when I cook beef fat, and reuse that whenever i need cooking oil for a different meal, so i don't burn through store bought tallow/lard or butter.
one of the biggest factors in determining your cost will be whether or not you are fussy about conventional vs pasture raised meat. if you are happy to eat conventional, then your costs will be significantly lower than if you insist on pastured products. as far as the impact on your health, there isn't much information about the difference between the two, i know people who eat conventional and others who eat pastured, they all feel good. for myself, and many people who choose pastured products, it's an ethical decision more than anything.
lastly, again i don't know your financial situation but if you have some wiggle room, you can look into an online butcher such as butcherbox, moink, betterfed, and others. the meat is a bit more wholesale so the price per pound tends to come out much cheaper than buying from a grocery store, however this again, like Costco, has a higher upfront cost.
i hope this information is helpful! let me know if you have any other questions and i'll do my best to answer them (hopefully with less rambling next time).
