“Checkmate.”

The young tadpole before him had a stern expression on her face, her bright colored eyes surveying the 16 boards in between them with intense concentration. The boards all lined up four high and four across, pawns, bishops, rooks, and only two knights each in spare spaces across them. Lieutenant Garuru’s queen was taken sometime in the last hour or so, but it was just a small price to pay for this exact moment to call a checkmate. He and the young girl before had left their chairs and now were standing in the middle of the classroom, on each side of the two desks that were pushed together for this game.

Originally, he was asked by one of the military schools to come in and talk to the students about the Keronian forces, which he was more than happy to do. This wasn’t the usual military school that he and his brother had gone to when they were children growing up in the capital Gerosect, this school was different. He was visiting one of the other countries on Keron, outside of Gerosect and near the bottom hemisphere of the planet where the scenery was just miles and miles of tall grass, calm galactic cattle, and maybe once in a while you’d find a small town acting as a spaceport for when supplies came in from larger cities. Lieutenant Garuru was in his father’s birthplace and hometown, Rellou (was it pronounced Ree-lou? Or Reh-lo? The accent is so thick here he can’t even figure out how to say the town’s name) visiting their first and only military school for the local children. In its heyday the school was there to act as a college and primary school for its small population, but when General Guroro of the military rose to fame a lot more people from the ‘surrounding’ villages started to move in and enroll their children to the very same place in hopes that the younger generation could rise to such accomplishments. So when General Guroro heard that his hometown was gaining popularity he funded the schools himself so that it could accommodate all the children coming in.

The military college and school were still connected by the main building with all the classes connected by many hallways, but now had two separate buildings on either side to act as housing for the adult students and the young children. It seemed more like a boarding school for the young ones, in Garuru’s eyes at least; there was housing, three meals a day, an hour for exercise or recess, study hours, and even a curfew. Garuru had just returned from his first ever war as a Corporal when he was invited to Rellou to talk to their students about the military, of course, it was all set up by his father so he couldn’t really decline the offer. But damn was he glad he never threw that opportunity away, he’s met some of the older folks who were teachers at the school and college, all colleagues and old friends of his father’s back when they used to run around in the open fields. He’s met some incredible children, bright, enthusiastic, hungry for learning and he’s met some strong-headed college kids who were eager to make their military proud.

Just like this young girl, Eriri.

She reminded Garuru so much of himself, she was ten, quiet, but her keen eyes always yearned for more knowledge. While he was still walking the halls with a professor who acted as his guide, Garuru watched as Eriri was trying--and struggling--to catch up to her peers on the track for gym. The poor girl was red in the face even though she was bright yellow in color, even when a few of the male classmates passed her and started to taunt her, her eyes were determined to keep going. In the mess hall, Garuru saw that even though she was invited by some of the other girls to sit with them she quietly dismissed herself and instead went to go eat outside, a book in her hand as she left. Just like him when he was at that age.

After Garuru talked the student’s ears off with one of his speeches and answered the dozens of their questions he took his free time during study hall to approach little Eriri to talk to her. That was when he saw the book she was reading--about 4D chess players. He asked her if she knew how to play, Eriri did, answering promptly ‘yes sir’ and even nodding her head politely when he asked if she’d like to play a round. They pushed two desks together and brought the boards to play.

Though a game usually would be over in about an hour whenever he usually played, this one, in particular, was going on three. Garuru was very impressed, he’s played thousands of 4D chess matches with all forms of life but this one round had to take the cake. He’s made soldiers, professors, generals, Lieutenants, politicians, and diplomats all turn with shame or defeat at one of his ‘signature’ moves, but here before him was a little girl wearing a simple unmarked uniform, pigtails, and no shoes or socks. She was circling their board with determination in her eyes and a hunger to take him down. The rest of the class was watching as well, at first uninterested but after two hours had passed and fifth period was being interrupted by their game there was students--college age and primary--as well as teachers grouped up on top of desk faces and sitting against the walls to see how this was all going to end.

When Garuru had claimed ‘checkmate’ the room fell into a gasp, students whispering to one another feverishly before their teachers and professors all hissed at them to quiet down to not distract the players. Eriri slowly made her way around the two desks, peering in between one level of the chessboard before moving to Garuru’s side to look at where his King still stood, untouched, then moved back to her side. That was when Garuru saw it.

A smile.

Eriri took one of her Knights from the third tier, just a step away from where the Lieutenant stood and then she knocked over his Bishop that threatened one of her pawns and defended his King, taking her new kill.

“Checkmate, Lieutenant.”

Garuru blinked back silently, tilting his head coolly to the side to peer in between boards two and three, then lifting his chin up just enough to look back at cross-boards B and C to his other pieces. His Rook on board A was too far away to cross vertically and too high up to make the move horizontally to cover his King. His knights all were cornered. And when he peeked down he still had three pawns remaining, but they were on board B tier 3.

A small smile came to his face, his shoulders bouncing just a little when he started to chuckle and then finally laugh boisterously when the room continued to watch in sheer and complete awe. Eriri was still smiling when Garuru’s laughs had stopped, nodding his head to signal to her that he was indeed in a tight space. He had no more moves left, he lost all his defense, he had lost. The young tadpole nearly vibrates with excitement as she takes her pawn and knocks over the white iridescent King piece to signal her win, the room abrupting with cheers and hollering. It was just like a scene from a movie--laughably--with students of all ages running up to Eriri to hug her, pat her on the shoulders, and congratulate her on winning the game. The teachers boasting to one another stating ‘they’ knew she was going to win, and the professors all making remarks of ‘she’s going to lead a fleet one day!’. It truly was a sight to behold.

“That was a great game, Eriri-chan.” Garuru states with a small grin, the little tadpole bowing politely to him with a quick and prompt ‘thank you, sir’. “Tell me, have you planned out exactly what you wanted to do once you graduate school?”

“I plan on joining the tactical division for the Keronian military! U-Uh, sir!” she states proudly, standing up straighter than before with both arms tightly at her sides. “I want to expand Keron’s defense lines, and traverse the galaxy to make allies for our militias!” Garuru couldn’t help but laugh a little more, not because of her dreams, but because of the way that she was answering so loudly, so proudly, it really was like looking into the past. Different goals, of course, but man, there was something so refreshing about seeing a child that he could definitely relate to.

“That’s a very ambitious goal, kiddo.” Garuru says; he was standing at ease the whole time that they were playing chess but now that he was addressing her he finally told himself to let his hands behind his back go and relax. Gesturing to Eriri a high five, she was looking relieved when she saw his hand and gave him a little tap with her hand. “Oh c’mon, you can do better than that. I expected much more from a 4D chess winner and our future tactical officer--!”

CRACK! Their hands slapped so hard Garuru couldn’t help but rumble with laughter again, his hand barely stinging from the collision but both he and little Eriri waved their hands from the miniature sonic boom.

“Excellent! That’s what I’m talking about! I look forward to seeing your accomplishments in the future, young lady.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant, sir!” Eriri proudly shouts. Garuru gives her a firm pat to her shoulder and dismisses her so she could run to her classmates and receive a more open congratulations from them. It was quite something, today she was just a little girl who loves to study and play chess, tomorrow--who knows? A field marshal? A tactical officer? All he knows is that the kid got something special in her.

Whatever Happened to the Shurara Corp?

tfw you’re tired and depressed so write a random one off thing.

I’m not a good writer (I’m more of an artist than a writer) but enjoy anyhow. (I have not seen the show in years, can you tell?)

Involves: Dororo, Kagege

Something was wrong, he could feel it.

Unfamiliar movement running through the forest, around the remains of that old mansion. And now, a letter stabbed into his door with a familiar insignia blazed upon it.

'Meet me by the waterfall tomorrow, I'll explain everything.'

Dororo was skeptical, and yet... there he was. His hand rested on his blade, anxiously awaiting his old adversary.

He couldn't let his guard down, he could emerge from anywhere, even from underneath his feet.

His gaze fell to his shadow, that's where he's appear. It casted itself long across the boulder mounted firmly by the river.

And just on cue, his shadow rose, taking on a physical shape. The darkness almost dripped away from it's body, revealing a soft white skin underneath. In place of an eye, all that stood was a blue cross. A purple scarf fluttered in the turbulent winds.

Dororo's hand twitched, anxiously awaiting for something....anything....

"It's been a while, Lance Corporal Zeroro."

"Same goes for you, Kagege."

"Please, take a seat." He sat down right where he stood.

"...How can I trust you."

"If I wanted you dead, I wouldn't have revealed myself, nor put myself in front of your blade, now please." He motioned downward to Dororo.

"In a way, we have, but I wanted to speak to you about that." Kagege sighed, "Though I suppose it would be easier to start from the beginning, no?"

Dororo nodded in agreement as Kagege continued.

"Well....After Shurara, and really, the rest of us returned home, we all tried to fall back into the status quo of our old lives. I never kept up with the rest of them outside of occasional check ins, guess I just wanted to make sure they were okay.... Putata was in and out of community service, Mekeke was nowhere to be seen after the incident, though Putata would go somewhere on sundays, probbaly to see him, Gyroro went back into foster care with Shurara, We've never figured out what happened to Giruru, Dokuku, nor Yukiki... Nuii disappeared...and Robobo well... you destroyed him. I didn't think much of it, I was one of the last to join so I wasn't hit as hard as Putata or Mekeke...

And yet.... Something was missing, for me personally, and I think the others felt it too. I brushed it off as a desire for revenge, I probably just wanted to give you and your platoon a smacking or two for the embarrassing defeat... and yet....

My thoughts fell back to them, Putata, our class clown, who though rarely serious, would take a bullet for any one of us.... Mekeke, practically the only person who could ever get through to Gyroro and Nuii, Even Shurara, though was always Putata's right hand man.... Gyroro though a trouble maker and a bit of a handful, had a sweet side, though would never admit it. Dokuku and....and Giruru..." He fell silent, his hands playing with the ends of his scarf.

"...A-Anyways, I guess we all felt this pull," he began again, "We were such a great team, even on our off time, and despite the arguing over dinner, the fights about Putata's music or Yukiki freezing the water in the pipes, I guess we all....became a family."

Dororo's hands rested on his knees, his defenses dropped in light of the news. "So, you all came back here....Why?"

"....Well... If you had good memories, even if in a bad place, wouldn't you want to come back? .... besides, I doubt we would even want to go back to Keron now, I think we'd be arrested for theft of a transportation vehicle." He chuckled quietly, fiddling with a hole in the fabric of his scarf. "We made home here, and really, that's where we're gonna stay."

"...And you're sure you're not going to...say, start another cooperation, of the assassins kind."

"No, I wanted to speak to you as....well.... you seemed the most level headed of the group, and I didn't want to get the others involved if at all necessary. Tell your leader that we're here to stay, but not to hurt."

Dororo gazed into Kagege's eye, though it was as blank as the rest of him. Though he felt a pull at his heart strings, They're here as a family this time after all...

"I believe in you Kagege, I will try to sway Keroro...well...namely Giroro from going on any attacks, but if I sense the slightly twinge of aggression, we will come back and strike you down." He threatened, "....Though I don't think you'd be any threat to us..."

Kagege nodded, "Thank you, I'll make sure there won't be any trouble, I swear by it." He stood up, "We'll keep out of your caps."

"Now, lets head to your old home, I'm sure you wouldn't mind a few extra hands around to clean."

Kagege stuttered, holding his scarf to his chest, "I-I mean if it's no trouble to you!"

"As long as I'm home before Koyuki, I don't mind." He tilted his head with a pleased look.

Standing up, Kagege seems to smile. "We could really get all the help we can get."

A Journey to Redamancy || Ch. 1

So here’s the first installment of my Gods AU. I hope you enjoy!

Redamancy (n.): a love returned in full; the act of loving the one who loves you

All gods knew each other.

Or, all gods knew of each other would be a better way to put it.

There was the god of death, known to most as Noctis. There was the god of mercy, often referred to by his friends as Prompto. There was the god of sacrifice that went by the name Ignis. There was the goddess of war known to all as Aranea, a name that struck fear into the hearts of mortals and gods alike. There was the goddess of family, Iris. And of course there was the King of the Gods who ruled them all, keeping the thousands of immortal beings from wreaking havoc among the pantheon.

This myth, however, belongs to the Goddess of the Night and the God of Love.

Lysandra was the product of the joining of Earth and Sky. The two deities -- two lovers -- created by Time, were instructed to keep the land above from meeting with the land below. Both were warned that should either land ever meet, the universe would cease to exist. For many thousands of years Earth and Sky did as instructed for the creation of a universe had never before occurred. If they were to be the ones to be the cause of destruction to such a new and beautiful thing their names would be shamed. Thus they watched both from above and below as Time created new immortal beings; some of which were sculpted from the clay found within Earth, others created from the mist that drifted across Sky’s body.

The longing Earth and Sky felt for one another never faded; each hoped for the day that they would be reunited. Even if it were to be only for mere moments they could touch, each deity would cherish the time together.

That moment came two millennia after Time had created the universe, and two millennia after giving the order that Earth and Sky were never to touch.

“You both have done as asked without question and without fail,” Time whispered across the universe. “As thanks, I shall permit you to join once more.” Time presented Earth with a flower, petals made of gold and silver. “There are twenty-four petals. You have until the last petal falls before you each must return to your domains.”

On the first night Earth and Sky were reunited they took a silver petal of the flower and created Night, naming her Lysandra. Her hair shined silver and her eyes were the color of stardust. On their last night, Earth and Sky took the last petal, golden in color, and created Day, naming him Keron. His hair glittered gold and his eyes were the color of sunlight.

“Our children,” Sky said. “You are the product of Earth and Sky. As such you shall each be gifted a domain to rule.”

“Lysandra, you shall rule darkness.” As Earth spoke he presented his daughter with a flower similar to the one gifted to Earth and Sky by Time. You have until each silver petal falls from this flower to fashion the universe as you like.”

“Keron, you shall rule light,” Sky said. “You have until each golden petal falls to fashion the universe as you like.”

Thus Day and Night were brought into the universe. Each night, Lysandra would gift her mother with small, silver beads of light. Each day, Keron would gift his father with golden rays of warmth. And while there has yet to be another day in which Time grants Earth and Sky to reunite once more, their children work as messengers between the two lovers, exchanging notes one parent has for the other.

Gladiolus was the product of a fight between Loneliness and Serenity.

Many eons after the creation of Night and Day, a war broke out among the gods. There were those that believed the creation of humans was something to celebrate, and there were those that believed humans should be wiped away before they too drastically changed the universe. There had been no rules against creating new creatures -- many other gods had already done so, introducing numerous animals and plants into the world -- so one day he used stardust borrowed from Night and clay borrowed from Earth to make the first humans. Too often Loneliness felt alienated from the other gods, too often he felt as though he wandered the universe alone, and this was how he believed his problem could be fixed.

“You will bring destruction to the universe by keeping these creatures here,” Serenity had accused. “They are spreading across Earth much too fast.”

“Please leave them be,” Loneliness pleaded. “They mean no harm, and many other gods see the potential that they have.”

“And many others also see them as they should be seen: a plague to our gifted universe.”

“They are no plague,” Loneliness stated, voice entering a dangerous timbre. “I shall not allow you to harm them.”

“I give you three days to rid Earth of these beings. If they are not gone by that time I will be at your door with an army.”

So three days passed, and Loneliness stood by his statement. He did not squash the life of the mortals that wandered the land below. Instead he banded together his own army, those that believed what he did: that humans were a gift and their lives were not to be taken away in such a manner. It was on that third night the war broke out among the opposing sides.

On the third night of the thirtieth year, Loneliness and Serenity faced each other once again. Both were heavily wounded, but neither would waver in their conviction. Swords raised, the two gods lunged at one another, and just as their weapons clashed a blinding white overtook the universe. As the light cleared, each god watched as a man knelt before them, hair the color of obsidian and eyes that glowed amber. He was built as a warrior, body corded with muscle, yet when he introduced himself to the baffled gods on either side of him he said, “I am Gladiolus, God of Love.” His voice was deep enough to throw tremors across the land above, and there was a savageness in him that kept Loneliness and Serenity from attempting to attack him. “End this war,” he said. “The gods will do more destruction to the universe than the humans will should it continue.”

It was on that night that the war came to an end, though the gods remained divided on the topic for many more years to come.

It was while Gladiolus had been walking among the mortals in the Land Below that he first came across Lysandra.

Ultimately it was the mystery that surrounded the goddess that intrigued Gladiolus. Though he had been presented to the universe at night, he had never met the goddess. He had heard of the Goddess of Night on multiple occasions though. Some of the tales told of her held threads of fear and animosity. Other tales were woven with admiration and reverence. The one thing each tale had in common, however, was that it was unusual for Lysandra to be seen often and by many. Older gods, those that had known her when she was still new to the world, would often recount how truly bright her personality was. Her friendliness could have easily rivaled Keron’s. It wasn’t until rather recently -- perhaps the last couple millennia -- that Lysandra became more a figure of legend even among the younger gods than a true being.

Appropriately it had been during a clear night that Gladiolus first met Lysandra. He had just gotten away from a fight in one of the many bars in the Land Above. It had been a while since he’d last fought like that with another deity, and perhaps it was his own fault for picking a fight with the Goddess of War. Gladiolus could still feel the golden ichor -- the blood of the gods -- dripping down his face. He wondered idly if he would have a new scar on his immortal body. It was only by the hand of another god that a deity could be truly injured.

As Gladiolus wandered the ever lush, green fields of the Land Above a soft glimmer of silver caught his eyes. Just ahead, standing at the edge of a darkened pond was a woman. Her hair flowed like a river of moonlight, ending just before her waist. Her wrists were decorated with silver circlets that matched the rings that adorned her fingers. The black dress she wore spilled gracefully over her frame, the silken material reflecting the light of the moon. She seemed at peace as she studied the reflective surface of the pond.

Gladiolus debated whether he should approach or not, but without realizing his feet had already begun to bring him over to the woman. When he was close enough to be heard without having to shout, he said, “Beautiful night tonight.”

The woman before him didn’t jump at his sudden words, instead she simply nodded her head. “Thank you.” It took Gladiolus a few moments to understand why that had been her answer.

“You’re Lysa- uh, Lady Night.”

“Lysandra is fine,” she said with a wave of her hand. She finally turned her eyes away from the pond, and Gladiolus was struck by her silver eyes. There was something vaguely disconcerting about them, like they could see completely through him, down to the very essence of his being. Her brows rose as she noticed the ichor. “You’re bleeding.”

“Ah, yeah, that’s what I get for picking a fight with the war goddess,” Gladiolus chuckled, bringing his hand up to wipe away the last few droplets of golden blood.

“You picked a fight with Aranea? Are you mentally unstable?” She turned back to the pond and bent down to wet a small cloth. Lysandra walked over to where Gladiolus was standing and handed it over. “Wash the dried ichor off, you look like a brute.”

“No sugar coating from you, huh?” Gladiolus said as he did as instructed. He winced slightly as the cloth came into contact with the wound.

“A man that willingly enters a fight with Aranea is unlikely to be hurt by such words.” Lysandra took back the cloth and rinsed it in the pond before studying Gladiolus. “So why exactly did the God of Love pick a fight with the one person he shouldn’t have?”

“You know who I am?”

“Why wouldn’t I? You knew who I was.”

For whatever reason it had never quite occurred to Gladiolus that while there were stories of Lysandra, there were likely also stories about himself. “Just itching for a fight I guess.” That certainly hadn’t been the reason that he’d gone to the bar that night, nor was it the reason he’d chosen to fight the one person that could have easily ended him, but telling someone he’d just met about his reasons wasn’t exactly high on the list of things he planned to do tonight.

The way those eyes were studying him once again sent something of a chill up Gladiolus’s spine, and a part of him was left to wonder if she could tell he was lying through his teeth. All she said though was, “Well that’s an utterly stupid reason to pick a fight with anyone.”

The two of them lapsed into a bout of silence, the air between them filled with the animals that lived on the Land Above. Gladiolus studied her as she turned to survey the tranquil scene before her. With all the stories and gossip that Gladiolus had heard about Lysandra, he hadn’t really expected her to be...this. She was much more subdued than he thought she would be; the nights that Gladiolus was familiar with were filled with strong emotions and violent passion. To see that the personification of the night was so completely opposite left Gladiolus feeling as though he were staring into one of the fun house mirrors the mortals used. As a deer came to stop at the pond, Gladiolus began to think that perhaps it made sense that Lysandra was a near embodiment of peace, Gladiolus thought as he took in the quiet night scene presented to him.

Slowly Gladiolus could feel that intrigue pulse through his body. The desire to understand Night in a deeper way bubbling underneath his skin. “You-” Gladiolus cut himself off as he turned his gaze back to where Lysandra had been standing moments before. He frowned as he realized that she had melted into the shadows, perhaps literally, between the time he’d looked away from her and now. Gladiolus cursed. The fact he had come to meet her here was complete chance, and considering it had taken so long for such a chance encounter to happen he was left with the sinking feeling that he may not see her again for another handful of years.

It wasn’t that he was drawn to her in any sort of romantic way. Gladiolus was very familiar with what love and attraction were like, and this was certainly not it. No, the pull that he felt towards Lysandra was a mix between the desire to understand and something else that he couldn’t quite place. It was something that left him feeling as though he had just come across someone who could quite possibly understand himself more than anyone else he’d known.

After all, there were many misconceptions about both Love and Night.
