To the bottom of the sea and the ends of the earth, high-risk travel is booming.
Re: the missing Titanic tourist submersible, from Christine Chung for The New York Times:
Plunging to the depths of the ocean in a submersible to explore the remains of the Titanic is just one of many extreme excursions on offer for travelers willing to pay a hefty price tag — and accept a substantial dose of peril...
These types of singular and dangerous adventures are becoming increasingly popular with deep-pocketed leisure travelers in search of novel experiences, several travel experts said.
“There are a lot of incredibly well-traveled folks out there who constantly push the boundaries of their travels to chase thrills and claim bragging rights,” said Peter Anderson, managing director of Knightsbridge Circle, a luxury concierge service with offices in London, New York and Dubai. “They’re so accustomed to what they consider to be typical vacations that they begin to seek out more unique experiences, many of which involve a degree of risk.”
Mr. Anderson said he had recently planned a trip for a client to visit the pyramids in South Sudan, the site of one of the world’s biggest refugee crises, which has a “Do Not Travel” advisory from the U.S. State Department. The planning process, he said, involved consultations with security experts on how to best mitigate potential dangers.
Another client wanted to voyage to the geographic South Pole — the southernmost point on Earth — which required chartering an icebreaker, a large vessel that can pass through ice-covered waters, and two helicopters for sightseeing. The trip, which cost about $100,000 per person, required a week of various health screenings and weather preparedness training.
Physically demanding expeditions to some of the world’s most remote destinations are a growing business for the luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent, said Geoffrey Kent, its founder. He said the company uses expert guides to eliminate as much risk as possible.
“These are thrilling adventures for top-tier clients who have done pretty much everything,” Mr. Kent said in a statement, adding that the challenges left guests “with a sense of accomplishment.”
Perhaps the priciest ticket, and biggest possible risk, is space travel, which has been dominated by a trio of billionaire-led rocket companies: Blue Origin, owned by Jeff Bezos, whose passengers have included the “Star Trek” television star William Shatner; Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic, where tickets for a suborbital spaceflight start at $450,000; and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which in 2022 launched an all-civilian spaceflight, with no trained astronauts on board.

Description: Fresh out of West Point, John Howard arrived for his first tour in Vietnam in 1965, the first full year of escalation when U.S. troop levels increased to 184,000 from 23,000 the year before. When he returned for a second tour in 1972, troop strength stood at 24,000 and would dwindle to a mere 50 the following year. He thus participated in the very early and very late stages of American military involvement in the Vietnam War. His two tours—one as a platoon commander and member of an elite counterguerrilla force, the second as a senior advisor to the South Vietnamese—provide a fascinating lens through which to view not only one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but also the country’s. **
Review:   Let me first say that I did enjoy this book - to a degree. That's why it gets 4 stars. But it's important to know that this is not a great book, which with the authors experiences, it really could have been. One of the biggest deficiencies is that he spends more time telling than showing. Good books of this genre give you a first hand view of what happened and what someone experienced. This book is very light on that, especially during his 1965 tour. It gets better with his Korean and Advisor experiences later on, but only just. Instead you get a lot of history of Vietnam, a lot of history of what happened, who went where, what they did. It's all very strategic and 1000 foot level when what this book is supposed to be is very in the weeds at the 1 foot personal experience level. This is a man who participated in a lot of intense operations, worked with incredible people like Foley and Hackworth, and was both a part of ABU and Tiger Recon with the 101st. But you never really get a feel for what it was like to be a member of either. You never get to experience a recon mission, though he was a part of many. You just know that x unit moved to y place, and then this is what happened / this was the outcome.
You get a good overview of the battles, the war, and even a few of the people, but very little else from his time with the 101st.
His time in Korea is a bit better and gives you a good understanding of what happened and some incidents and the people. Also his time as an Advisor is also more personal as well. So maybe it's just a memory thing and things from 72 are easily recalled vs 65.
One thing you'll notice is a lot of ring knocking and naming of generals... so many generals. So just... be prepared for that.
Overall though, a decent book... he needs to work on the tell vs show more than anything. Up next, going to read Foley's Special Men. I always loved Foley's fictional writing, so I have high hopes for his book about his time with Tiger Recon and other units. I have a feeling it's going to be a good compliment to this book.

What other shows are you into, if any? 🥰
hi Ally <3
so besides MASH im into tons and tons!! ill just list some off the top of my head-
Cowboy Bebop: just finished rewatching this one, I wanted my dad to watch it. im a big anime fan, this one is high up on my list of favourites, its a classic! I even recommend it to non-anime fans because the gorgeous animation, compelling characters and story, and unique world building are just soooooooo good
Mob Psycho 100: hey. hey wanna watch something truly fucking bizarre and unique. wanna watch something that feels like going through therapy. want to cry your eyes out to the most unexpected anime dude of all time. boy do I have a show for you. MP100 makes me unreasonably emotional and I think everyone should watch it
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: my favourite anime of all time nothing else comes even close. I could write an essay on why FMAB should be required viewing. I wish everyone could experience watching it as a kid and going back to it as an adult and having your entire perspective and understanding shift because suddenly youre older than the main characters and shit is so much more horrifying than when you were the same age/younger
Gargoyles: what im currently watching. also a big cartoon fan. Gargoyles is such a wonderful product of the mid-90s and I adore it. I grew up on 80s and 90s cartoon so everything from the lore to the character designs is very nostalgic to me. I need to watch the last season still but I keep putting it off cause I know the quality dips
Avatar the Last Airbender: next show im picking for my dad and I to watch. I unironically consider it to be one of the best stories ever written, with some fantastic characters and what continues to be one of my favourite redemption arcs of all time
Batman the Animated Series: best Batman. no question. I do not accept criticism. I did watch Justice League + Justice League Unlimited with my dad recently and I quite enjoyed those, but nowhere near as much as I enjoyed BtAS. Kevin Conroy I miss you every day nobody understood Bruce Wayne like you did
Doctor Who: both Classic and New Who. we have a free streaming service with a Classic Who channel, and we've had the DVDs for New Who playing lately. my favourite show of all time! meant the world to me as a teenager and got me through a lot. I have a tattoo of 11's sonic and bowtie <3
Smallville: my dad did a rewatch of this recently and I was around for most of it. and listen, ok, Smallville is a cringe fest a lot of the time. its an early 2000s CW show. but its ironically still my favourite depiction of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, and honestly probably my favourite Lois Lane
Star Trek: various Trek shows. TOS is currently playing a lot in the house, which I have seen all of and adore, but im also a huge TNG fan even though i. havent finished it. haha. Ive also seen most of Voyager and quite enjoyed it. at some point ill get to DS9 probably
The X-Files: another one I havent rewatched in years but think about often. X-Files truly had it all. not a day goes by that I dont think about Jose Chung's from Outer Space. this was the first show to make me physically grind my teeth and scream into a pillow over a slowburn
I have more but these are what I can remember off the top of my head and what I would rewatch! im big into shows and movies so I watch a lottttttt. shoutout to some other shows ive loved like Lucifer, the Mandalorian, Kenobi, Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel the Series, Schitt's Creek, The Owl House, Violet Evergarden, and others im sure im forgetting

top 10 books of 2022
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Devotion by Hannah Kent I am incapable of being normal about this book. Read it for: the most beautiful prose, an incredibly atmospheric historical setting, lesbians + the ocean, gay devotion that makes your heart ache, a dash of magical realism.
After Sappho by Selby Wynn Schwartz Read it for: a fictionalised account of the lives of real women, finding new historical lesbians to be obsessed about, women who challenged their role in the world, a narrative voice akin to a greek chorus.
Pachinko by Min Jee Lee Read it for: a tale about how the past perpetually influences the present, an exploration of identity in the context of war, immigration, and colonialism, strong familial ties.
In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado Read it for: the courage of finding words for what you have no words for, a masterfully crafted memoir, the painful reality of abusive queer relationships.
Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell Read it for: history from an unexpected perspective, a story about love and grief, a stifling dreamlike atmosphere.
I'm Glad my Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy Read it for: a celebrity memoir focused on the experiences and not the person, a frank, self-aware, and insightful look into abusive parental relationships, dealing with grief in a tenderly humorous way.
Spell Heaven and Other Stories by Toni Mirosevich Read it for: a story about outsiders finding a community, a lesbian couple in a quaint seaside town, the importance of human connection instead of isolation.
The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For by Alison Bechdel Read it for: an unabashed lesbian soap opera, a glimpse into queer history, a gentle tongue-in-cheek look at the messy lives of queer women.
Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys Read it for: a classic novel reimagined, a book that shows how feminism is limited by whiteness and colonialism, the thin line between dream and nightmare.
Cursed Bunny by Bora Chung Read it for: weird and unsettling stories you will randomly remember long after you finished the book, one part horror, one part magical realism, one part sci-fi, one part the constant trauma of living in our modern world.

Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media

I'm writing an AU where Damian grew up in Gotham and I need some names for the background classmates/people but I don't want to do the plain John/Jessica/etc. but I'm not American so idk what other names are popular for his age
Some things you can do assuming you're still working on this after 3 months of me not answering:
• Look through yearbooks
• Watch graduation footage
• Check websites like LinkedIn where people post their names
• Search up popular names by year
America is diverse enough that no one bats an eye. There are literally 0 rules (I'm looking at you, boy named Pistol from 2nd grade)
In canon Damian was born only 3 years after me so feel free to use some of these repeat names I went to school with that I recall off the top of my head
First names:
- Nicole. I knew 3 and they all got married straight out of high school for some reason
- Aiden. Had 2 in my 10th grade English class and they had the same last initial. We called one of them Fish
- Alex, Kai, and Elliot. If you're in any queer circles you know what I'm talking about
- Muhammad (and other spellings). It's the most common name in the world and the a lot of ones I knew went by their middle names precisely because of it
- Ethan. I knew like 4—two played on the same basketball team and one almost got arrested
- Hannah. In my experience she'll either be super chill or Catholic
- Will. I've met 2. Both weirdos
Last names:
- Zhang. There were like 6 Zhangs in my graduating class and I felt bad that they were always last since they're at the end of the alphabet
- Johnson. They're everywhere
- Nguyen. I think something like a third of Vietnamese people have that last name
- Prondzinski. It was because of a set of triplets but I'm gonna count it because why not
- Sharma. I knew 2 and they went a full year letting people think they were related
- Schaffer. Also knew 2. I think one works retail now last I checked
- Hernandez. I knew 2 Mexican and 1 Filipino kid with that name

Tặng Ebook 170 Hình Bida Gom Thông Dụng - Sách Dạy Bida Phăng
Tumblr media
2. Nhóm Hình A Băng Không ai đo được lực xoáy của a băng hay cú nhồi tạo góc.
