Please help us gently welcome Twyla to the GALT family. She was living stray in the Mansfield, Texas, area. Good Samaritans helped her to safety when she entered a trap on April 13th. She spent last night at the emergency clinic and visited our vets in Dallas today.
Our vets estimate Twyla is 2-3 years old. She only weighs 38 pounds and is anemic. She has demodectic mange, which is not contagious. We will get the bulk of her lab work and fecal results tomorrow and will share an update. Meanwhile she received a dewormer because of her anemia and Bravecto to help with the mange as well as her fleas and ticks. She is taking an antidiarrheal and two antibiotics. She will be sent to a foster home with special biome food and a feeding schedule so that she regains her weight carefully without causing other health issues. She will also need gentle baths every other day with a medicated shampoo.
If you would like to be a part of her recovery and adoption story, please consider a donation to help us with her vet bills. If you do not want to give on Facebook or Instagram, you can also give on our website:
Thank you for helping us help hounds like Twyla!

Life since the boys’ high school graduation has been hectic. Bradley, Neilson, and Natalie attended USC and while there Bradley met and fell in love with a co-ed named Sydney James. Harry made it through Princeton and in the meantime shadowed a professional photographer named Matthew Abbott where he met Greta Leoni, a smalltime model who showed up in numerous teen magazines. Kyle ran into Adam’s cousin Zoey while attending NYU, the two rekindled their romance despite Adam’s misgivings. Adam, while living in London met another American student studying abroad, an aspiring photographer named Quinn.
Now all grown up and married with families of their own, the boys are managing careers, marriage, and fatherhood. Bradley and Neilson now work in law enforcement underneath the very same detective who worked to save their lives. Neilson and Natalie ,who became an elementary school teacher are now married and share a son named Joseph aka Joey. Bradley and wife Sydney, a struggling writer, are the proud parents of three daughters, Rachel, Libby, and Mady. Adam now works in Hollywood as a film producer, he and wife Quinn, a professional photographer share two sons, Christian and Chandler. Kyle officially joined Adam’s family when he married Zoey, who now runs her own veterinary clinic, meanwhile Kyle followed up on his aspirations to become a teacher and now teaches and coaches football and the very high school he attended, the two share twins Ethan and Ella who are also accomplished athletes.
Harry attended medical school after college and became a researcher and now works alongside Vicki, who now works as chief of staff, at Hilridge General Hospital in the lab. He and Greta, who now runs her own modeling agency, married and share daughter Gabriela who inherited her father’s academic prowess and love of photography. Romance blossoms between Rachel and Joey who had been best friends since early childhood as well as Chandler and Libby, Gabriela also falls for Adam’s bad-boy son Christian. all while their dads are still making music and performing to sold out audiences. Brian and Vicki’s rekindled romance lead them down the aisle as they finally tied the knot, meanwhile Kellie made things official with Dean and also nabbed the position as DA.
Future events note that Bradley and Neilson become in-laws through Rachel and Joey who end up marrying and welcoming twins of their own, Nickolas and Briana.

late night reversed (Kelly from Amy)
@iloveitxwhenaplanxcomestogether
Phones ringing late at night at a vet’s office are hardly unusual events. Animal-related emergencies happen at all hours, same as the ones that humans suffer. Only there is no twenty-four hour veterinary clinic for miles in any direction. There is only Kelly. Homer leads the way from her surgery, where she has been inventorying supplies, to her office and the still-jangling phone. The local operator knows to let the calls ring a bit longer—it can take Kelly a few minutes to get there sometimes. “Hello?” She tucks the phone against her ear, half-expecting to hear one of the farmers frantic over a lambing that has taken a bad turn, or a local pet owner having some late-night crisis. When she hears Amy’s voice on the other end, she straightens up a bit.
Tumblr media
“Amy? Is everything alright?” She tilts her head bewilderedly. “Is something wrong with HM? Or one of the other guys? Do you need to make a stop-off here?” She can think of no other reason why Amy would be calling at this hour. While Kelly is no medical doctor, humans are not that different from any other mammal. In a pinch, she does a perfectly fine job stitching up a slice, or cleaning out a gash or two. She can even handle the odd bullet wound, though she would prefer handing those over to Dr.  Sullivan whenever she can. Just because the veterinarian can handle such injuries does not mean that she wants too.

Is spot in the small town au?
yes!!
okay so i'm just gonna list everyone and give a little rundown of their place in the au!
this is REALLY long, but please feel free to ask me about any of them !!! i love them so much!! please !! so, here it goes:
SMALL TOWN AU CHARACTER LIST:
Jack Kelly:
17 or 18, depending on when it takes place
Birthday: July 3rd
Jack is involved in the rodeo circuit. He primarily participates in barrel racing, though he also participated in steer riding- basically the junior equivalent of bull riding for 7-13 year olds.
He has two horses, Dolly (10) and Cash (6). Dolly is his pride and joy and is the horse he trains with most often. She's also his main rodeo horse. Cash is ,, just kind of there, but he's a fun time and Jack works with him as well, though Cash isn't as experienced in the rodeo circuit. He's more of a recreational horse.
Jack is also a student, entering his senior year. (All fics that have been uploaded take place in the summer between junior and senior year.)
He's bisexual (though it's a long process for him to be able to admit it, to himself and to anyone else).
He lives on a farm on the outskirts of town with his father, Daniel, a harsh and unsupportive man who rarely shows up to any of Jack’s events. The farm is fairly large and successful; they raise cattle for stock shows and have had a long partnership with the butcher in town. Jack also raises hens on his own and sells the eggs as a side hustle for some extra cash because, like, why not?
side note: his chickens are his 'ladies'
Jack has an interest in art, the history of the 'wild west', and politics. He hopes to go to university and major in either Studio Arts or Graphic Design, but he's scared that he will have to stay home on the farm.
David Jacobs:
18
Birthday: May 11th
David is everyone's favorite city boy. He was born and raised in Manhattan, though his family relocates to a small, rural town in the American southwest because of a job opportunity for David’s father.
Naturally, David has no clue what to think. He goes from being an out-and-proud gay teenager to being shoved back into the closet, and he doesn't come out to anyone until at least two months after they arrive in town.
He’s Jewish, and is actually a polyglot; he can speak English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, French, and Spanish. All of the Jacobs kids can speak Hebrew, Yiddish, and Polish- just because it’s kind of a family thing? David’s grandparents don’t speak much English, and Esther and Mayer wanted their children to be multilingual.
David is also a student going into his senior year. He's very active in extracurriculars; he takes all AP classes, he does public speaking, he enjoys volunteer work, etc. His resumé is extensive and impressive.
He meets Jack because Les, ever the inquisitive child, saw an ad for the rodeo and basically begged to go. Since Esther and Mayer were busy, and Sarah already had work, David volunteered to take him.
This is where they meet Jack, and David falls head over heels for the boy.
Anyway, David doesn’t exactly *like* living in a small town like this, but the people he meets are more genuine than anyone he’s ever met in the city.
When he goes to university, he wants to major in English Education, with a double-minor in Creative Writing and Comparative Literature. But there’s something about this little town that makes him want to stay close and not go to a huge university across the country.
Katherine Pulitzer:
17
Birthday: January 30th
Katherine is a barrel racer, just like Jack. She’s actually one of the best around; she’s beat Jack more times than he can count, and has the most wins under her belt- more than anyone in their group.
She’s whip smart, too. She takes AP classes, she’s taking concurrent college courses- she’s basically the golden child.
Her horse is named Shakespeare. I will not budge on this.
She loves reading, obviously; she has, like, three bookshelves in her bedroom alone.
She actually doesn’t look like a typical Southern girl. Unless she’s barrel racing or training with Shakespeare- when she wears jeans, a button up, and boots- she wears skirts and heels and has very extravagant makeup; she doesn’t like taking herself too seriously.
She’s going to college for Journalism, and hopes to be a reporter for a big news station. Her father isn’t particularly fond of this decision, mainly because he wants her to stay in town for the rest of her life and run the town newspaper, but Katherine has bigger aspirations.
Charlie “Crutchie” Morris
17
Birthday: August 12
Though Crutchie isn’t directly involved with the rodeos, he’s a huge helper- mainly because he’s the one who takes care of everyone’s horses.
Not really, but kind of. His family owns the veterinary clinic in town, so he often goes with his parents on farm calls, and basically works for them. Everything he knows about animals has been learned from a lifetime of living behind the vet clinic, spending lunch hours watching surgeries, and going to different farms every weekend.
He’s best friends with Jack Kelly. They actually met because of the clinic; Crutchie would often come to the Kelly’s farm with his mother whenever they went to check on the horses or the cattle.
He does a few different sports, both through the school and through different leagues in the surrounding areas.
He's going to major in Animal Science in university, then go to vet school! He hopes to expand his family's clinic.
Antonio "Racer" Higgins
17
Birthday: February 14th
This boy. Thiiiiis boy. He's one hell of a fun time. He throws the best bonfires, he knows all the line dances, and he's the life of the party wherever he goes.
But he's also really fucking intelligent. Like, 32 on the ACT intelligent. He could go to any school he wants to go to, and he's going to major in Animal Science like Crutchie- but he's actually planning on participating in the collegiate rodeo circuit, and hopes to go professional after college.
He's a snarky little smart-ass, but he's one of the most genuine people. He tells it like it is, because being honest is more important than saving feelings.
But he's also a complete softie! He gives really good hugs and is one of the most affectionate people in the group.
Albert DaSilva:
18
Birthday: October 30th
Albert is a senior like the rest of them, and he's one of the only ones- like Crutchie- not directly involved in the rodeos.
He's always there, though! He loves the atmosphere and likes supporting his friends!!
Albert works at his Uncle's auto shop. He's really handy and loves it. He loves cars, loves working with his hands, and loves the technical side of things.
Whenever Jack needs help with his truck, an ancient Dodge Dakota, Albert is right there. He also works on trailers and stuff!
Albert is also really into welding. He's been welding with his Uncle since he was, like, 13, and he's going to go to a technical school instead of college so he can get his welding certification.
Sean "Spot" Conlon
18
Birthday: December 10th
Spot is involved with the rodeo! He doesn't barrel race, though; he does saddle bronc and bull riding.
He also used to do calf roping when he was younger.
He's one of the most intense guys around. He loves rodeo and loves the community; he's serious about it, and- like Race- he hopes to go professional as an adult. He's also, of course, looking to be involved on the collegiate level.
But he also knows how to have fun. He likes bonfires and likes getting together with his friends, and he has the best sense of humor; he makes the funniest, quickest jokes and no one ever expects it from him.
I've talked about this before, but Spot isn't the best at having heart to hearts. He's very business-minded, but his love language is gift giving! He's just,, not very conventional at it.
He gives random gifts like sticks and rocks, but everyone loves it anyway. He's good. He's a good guy.
And that's that !! There are a few more background characters, of course, but these are the mains. I hope you guys enjoy this !!

COVID-19 pet boom has veterinarians backlogged, burned out
May 23, 2021 - Kelli Kennedy, Associated Press
Veterinary clinics around the country, including Brooklyn, have been overrun by new four-legged patients, adding to stress among veterinarians and their staff. Vets interviewed by the Associated Press have extended hours, hired additional staff and refused to take new patients, and they still can’t keep up. Burnout and fatigue are such a concern that some practices are hiring counselors to support their weary staffs.
Approximately 12.6 million U.S. households got a new pet last year after the pandemic was declared in March 2020, according to a COVID-19 Pulse Study by the American Pet Products Association.
Meanwhile, fewer people relinquished their pets in 2020, so they needed ongoing care, experts said. And as people worked from home and spent more time with their pets, they’ve had more opportunities to notice ailments that could typically go untreated.
VERG (Veterinary Emergency and Referral Group), a 24-hour emergency and specialty animal hospital on Fourth Avenue in Gowanus, Brooklyn, reported a 40 percent jump in emergency care since the pandemic began. That’s also meant more pet hospitalizations, straining various specialties like surgery and cardiology.
“The demand continues to grow,” causing extreme weariness in a profession known for its big-hearted workers, said Verg’s chief medical officer, Dr. Brett Levitzke.
“Fear of the unknown with the pandemic leads to more intense emotions from our clients,” said Levitzke.
He’s seen expletive-laced outbursts and threats from pet owners, and also outpourings of love, with cards and baked goods. After the toll on the staff became noticeable, they hired a compassion fatigue specialist for support.
“Unfortunately, compassion fatigue, anxiety, and depression already plagued our profession, and the pandemic has certainly taken it to another level,” Levitzke said.
Vets were already struggling to meet the pre-pandemic demand, with veterinary schools unable to churn out enough doctors and techs to fill the void.
Banfield Pet Hospital, one of the largest national providers of preventive veterinary medicine, which has a location on Atlantic Avenue in Boerum Hill, had approximately half a million more pet visits in 2020 than in 2019. And its telehealth service more than doubled in volume from March through the end of last year.
During the gloomiest stretches of the pandemic, Dr. Diona Krahn’s veterinary clinic in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been a puppy fest, overrun with new four-legged patients.
Typically, she’d get three or four new puppies a week, but between shelter adoptions and private purchases, the 2020 COVID-19 pet boom brought five to seven new clients a day to her practice. Many are first-time pet owners.
Like many veterinarians across the country, she’s also been seeing more sick animals.
“Everyone is working beyond capacity at this point,” said Krahn, who added evening hours last year.
Krahn left her practice three months ago and now oversees nine veterinary and animal hospital clinics across Utah and Idaho under Pathway Vet Alliance. “All of my practices are booking out several weeks in advance.”
Thrive, another veterinary hospital primary care group, with 110 facilities across the U.S. but none in Brooklyn, reported a 20 percent increase in demand during the pandemic. Both repeated a common refrain — as humans spent more time with their pets, they were more in tune with their ailments — big and small.
“With COVID, a lot of people became powerless to the ones closest to them,” said Claire Pickens, a senior director at Thrive, “but the one thing they still had the ability to control was caring for their pet.”
Clinics have been forced to streamline, having patients fill out forms online or by phone pre-appointment because hiring additional staff often isn’t an option.
“The industry is growing at a rate that it can’t fill all the roles needed to keep up with the increased demand for services,” said Pickens.
Veterinary positions are projected to grow 16 percent by 2029, nearly four times the average of most other occupations, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics. Vet tech jobs are expected to increase nearly 20 percent in the next five years.
“We are still short staffed despite active seeking of additional staff,” said Dr. Katarzyna Ferry, Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Palm Beach Gardens.

NEED SOME HELP!
This is Kelly. Kelly and her sister Kiara are around 1 ¾ years old and live by my mother for 1 ½ years. Both were born on the streets and lived the first weeks of their lives there until they came into the shelter and shortly after were adopted by my mom.
What the shelter didn’t tell; both had darm parasites and thus bad diarrhea. (Bye carpet!) After weeks of treatment both recovered and managed to gather trust to humans. They still occasionally will look at feet and shoes in fear because I’m pretty sure they got kicked as kittens.
Kiara turned out to be a elegant diva, while Kelly turned out to be a lap cat. Both really love my mom and will snuggle with her in the night.
But like life can be a bitch. On easter sunday (12.4.2020) evening I got a call from my mom. Kelly somehow managed to get past the security grid of the bedroom window and fell down from the second floor. Because of the idiot neighbour who stores some roof tiles right between the two houses for years, Kelly fell unlucky.
She broke her hip joint and also injured her lung!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since sunday she is in the veterinary clinic and she can’t get operated yet because of the air and water in her lungs.
With each day that passes the treatment costs rise! So far the costs are at 600€ and it’s estimated it will be at 1.500€ (that’s about 1.632$) after the operation! So far the vet clinic is okay with a 4-month instalment payment but I know my mom can’t afford that in such a short time! Covid-19 even prevents that she can visit her cat!
I really hate to do this and need to swallow my pride for it; but here I ask for your help!
Even if you just can spend 1€ it would help and of course would be cherished! My mother doesn’t know I ask for donations yet but I will tell her soon.
I also sew and sell a few hammocks for pet rats to gather money!

(OC Ask Game) Summer Thompson + 6, 10, 15, 16, 18, 20, 28, 32, 35, 36, 41, 43, and 44
aight buckle up
6. What were they like at school? did they enjoy it? Did they finish? What level of higher education did they reach? What subjects did they enjoy? Which did they hate?
Summer liked school enough to make Bs pretty consistently, As if it was a teacher who really helped her flourish. Fav subject was always english, but she was bored by history. Tried to like science but was only ever meh about it. Got through high school and college intending to be a doctor like her dad. Took a gap year after college bc she realized she wasn’t sure about the whole doctor thing, and with her family’s financial situation, she wasn’t going to make them pay for med school and then drop out. Ended up with a part-time job doing file work for a veterinary clinic for that year, and went to vet school the year after. Now happily working in a veterinary clinic in Maine.
10. Do they like children? Do children like them? Do they have or want any children? What would they be like as a parent?
Summer loves kids of all ages. She starts babysitting at the age of 13, loves it loves it loves it. Always assumes she’ll end up with kids but it’s always sort of a future thing... I haven’t decided who she ends up with (and thus,if/how she has kids) but as a parent, she would be fun, willing to joke around with her kids, and definitely really close with them.
15. Are they good at cooking? Do they enjoy it? What do others think of their cooking?
Summer learned to cook from her dad, so she’s pretty good. She mostly makes stuff ahead of time, or makes something simple and quick, but on Saturdays she goes all out and tries new, fancy recipes, just to have fun. Everyone loves her cooking and especially in college and vet school she has people lining up to taste what she’s making
16. Do they collect anything? What do they do with it? Where do they keep it?
Summer likes comic books. Her biggest “collection” is at her parents’ house but when she moves out she gets a few a month. She loves to read and reread them, she’s not one of the “in 20 years this will sell for lots of money” types
18. What’s their favorite genre of books, music, tv shows, films, video games, and anything else
Mystery. Mystery, mystery, mystery. Summer has ALL of the Nancy Drew books (and there are a lot) and quite a few Agatha Christie. As for music she doesn’t have a genre preference but 95% of the stuff she listens to is lighthearted, happy music. She likes the og nintendo games, like pokemon and super mario, but can beat both of her brothers at super smash bros, andcan totally spend an entire weekend playing animal crossing. also i’ve told you this but she and Judd watch all kinds of old black and white movies... Grace Kelly is Summer’s bi awakening
20. Do they like musicals? Music in general? What do they do when their favorite song comes on?
Summer isn’t really into musicals, but she does like listening to music... always wearing earbuds, and 9 times out of 10 gets to DJ in the car. She always starts dancing when her music is playing bc that’s why she listens to music, to feel happy and upbeat and dance
28. What is their biggest fear? What in general scares them? How do they act when they’re scared?
Mkay, this one is harder, tbh... Summer doesn’t like the dark. Thunderstorms on the beach scare her, but if she’s somewhere safe, she’s fine. She’s deathly afraid of falling tho (possibly related to a childhood tumble down the stairs, and yes, I will write you a drabble of that). When scared she wants to be with her family, specifically her dad
32. What do they dress like? What sort of shops do they buy clothes from? Do they wear the fashion that they like? What do they wear to sleep? Do they wear makeup? What’s their hair like?
Her style is kinda wacky... she goes thrift shopping once every few weeks and gets new necessities at the start of every school year. Almost nothing she owns is new but she rarely minds. Has a style similar to Vicki’s, up to and including stealing Judd’s shirts. Sleeps in a tshirt and pajama pants-- flannel in fall/winter, linen in spring/summer. Long hair, often messy, dark brown. Most often in a ponytail but she braids it to surf. hates makeup with a burning passion
35. What’s their guilty pleasure? What is their totally unguilty pleasure?
Guilty pleasure: sims let’s plays on youtube. She watches way too many and stays up later than she should going down that rabbit hole
Unguilty pleasure: chocolate ice cream. All of her pocket money all summer goes to fudgesicles from the beach snack bar
36. What are they good at? What hobbies do they like? Can they sing?
Can definitely sing, and really good at it. Also good at cooking and will spend hours in the kitchen with Judd. Writes poetry but doesn’t let anyone read it
41. What’s their sexuality? What do they find attractive? Physically and mentally? What do they like/need in a relationship?
Bisexual. Likes a nice smile, and for her potential SO to be clean and smell nice. Needs someone to confide in and someone who will support and comfort her.
43. Are they religious? What do they think of religion? What do they think of religious people? What do they think of nonreligious people?
Christian, Episcopalian. Her family goes to a methodist church and while she likes the idea of God, she’s not super into the Bible and doesn’t really consider herself “Spiritual”. Naturally, she finds the Canterbury House at college and is like “laid-back christians??? these are my people” bc she can have the comfort and support of religion and fellowship but no pressure or strict traditions. Absolutely cool with anyone of any belief system.
44. What is their favorite season? Type of weather? Are they good in the cold or the heat? What weather do they complain in the most?
Her fav season is summer, and she likes sunny, warm weather. Prefers heat to cold but doesn’t mind either as long as she can be outside. Complains about rain bc shes stuck inside

Is Your Dog Vomiting Blood? What to Do Next
The post Is Your Dog Vomiting Blood? What to Do Next by Jackie Brown appeared first on Dogster. Copying over entire articles infringes on copyright laws. You may not be aware of it, but all of these articles were assigned, contracted and paid for, so they aren’t considered public domain. However, we appreciate that you like the article and would love it if you continued sharing just the first paragraph of an article, then linking out to the rest of the piece on Dogster.com.
Picture this: It’s 11 p.m. on a Saturday night. You’re roused from your slumber by the sound of your dog throwing up all over the bedroom floor. With a deep sigh, you crawl out of bed, flip on the light and kneel down to clean it up. But wait, you see something dark-colored in the vomit. Blood. Your heart skips a beat. Your dog is throwing up blood. Is a dog vomiting blood life threatening? Do you need to rush your dog straight to the emergency clinic?
What to do about a dog vomiting blood
What are the next steps to take for a dog vomiting blood? Photography ©Rasulovs | Thinkstock.
A dog vomiting blood can be a sign of a serious emergency or a minor problem. “It sounds gross, but you should look closely at the vomit,” says Kelly Diehl, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, scientific communications advisor for the Morris Animal Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that funds animal health research. “Is it a just a thread or a few streaks of red blood? Is it a volume of fluid that’s very red, like fruit punch? And is there anything that looks like coffee grounds?”
A small amount of red blood in your dog’s vomit could be caused by simple stomach irritation. “If [your dog has] an upset stomach and [he’s] been vomiting a lot, the stomach becomes so irritated that [he] can have a little bleeding,” Dr. Diehl explains. “Sometimes, we see stomach bleeding in pets that are taking non-steroidal [anti-inflammatory] drugs.” So, a dog vomiting blood that looks like just a few flecks or streaks of red blood is not necessarily very serious. As long as the bleeding and/or vomiting doesn’t get worse, you could potentially wait until the next day to contact your vet.
Is your dog vomiting blood and exhibiting these symptoms?
In some cases, a dog vomiting blood necessitates an immediate trip to your veterinarian (or the emergency clinic, if it’s after hours). A dog vomiting blood that is uniformly bright red signifies a large amount of bleeding. Black or dark-brown blood that looks like coffee grounds indicates the bleeding has been going on for a long amount of time, so that is very concerning. “A lot of people don’t realize that’s dried, partially digested blood,” Dr. Diehl explains. “That is almost always serious, even more serious than a streak of red blood.”
Another factor to consider with a dog vomiting blood is your dog’s demeanor. Is your dog acting fairly normal other than throwing up blood, or is he very lethargic and depressed? A dog vomiting blood who is also acting very sick should go to the vet immediately, even if it’s the middle of the night.
Additionally, a dog vomiting blood should be checked for other sources of bleeding. “For example, if [your dog] ate something like rat bait, that can cause [him] to vomit blood, but [he’s] usually bleeding somewhere else, too,” Dr. Diehl says. “[He] might be bleeding from the mouth or the nose and swallowing it. Any kind of bleeding that doesn’t seem to be slowing down, from the nose or the mouth, or any other signs of bleeding, including bruising on the skin or passing blood in stool, is an emergency. You don’t wait — you go right in.”
The bottom line on vet attention for a dog vomiting blood
The answer is easy with a dog vomiting blood during normal business hours. Call your veterinarian, describe the blood you saw, and ask if your dog needs to come in immediately or if you can take a wait-and-see approach.
However, if your dog is throwing up blood after business hours, consider the appearance and the amount of blood, how your dog is acting, and whether he has any known medical issues or is taking any medications that might be contributing to the bleeding. “If it’s really a lot of red-looking vomit, versus a streak or flecks, you should come in right away,” Dr. Diehl advises. “When you see that much bleeding, you should go in, even if your pet seems to be okay. And if your dog starts feeling really lousy, even if you’ve just seen a little bit of blood, you should go in right away.”
If you choose to wait until morning, always call your vet to report what you saw, even if your dog seems to be feeling better. “Don’t ever just completely blow it off,” Dr. Diehl says. “Even if you don’t see the blood anymore, call and talk with your veterinarian about what your next step should be.”

SeaWorld, Illumina assemble highest quality genome of dolphin to date
Kelly Wade - March 5, 2019
Advancements in genetic mapping technology and assembly algorithms have enabled scientists at Illumina to construct a high-quality reference genome of the Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Mapped from DNA samples provided by SeaWorld, San Diego, the completed genome is the most comprehensive and ambitious sequencing of a dolphin to date and it has the potential to evolve our understanding of comparative biology, breeding, medicine and conservation planning.
“When we were contacted by Illumina, we knew immediately this was a project that we wanted to be a part of, not only because of our commitment to research, but because involving our dolphin was going to help produce the highest quality results,” said Dr Hendrik Nollens from SeaWorld.
Why the bottlenose dolphin was used for this research and what was unique about the project
The bottlenose dolphin is frequently used for medical research because its genetic similarities to humans make it a useful model for research into a variety of human health issues like diabetes, metabolic disorders and illnesses associated with ageing. Until now, however, there hasn’t been a publicly available genome of this type (a phased de novo genome assembly) for this species so genomic research using these dolphins has been limited.
“The quality of the genome is such that we didn’t just sequence [a dolphin’s] genome, we were, for the first time in a dolphin or whale, able to determine the genome’s organization and structure,” said Dr Nollens.
The research team produced both a haploid and diploid assembly
For this research, Illumina used cutting-edge assembly software to produce a traditional ‘haploid’ assembly and a haplotype-phased ‘diploid’ assembly. This new assembly is unmatched in accuracy, allowing for new ways to explore the dolphin’s genetically heterozygous nature.
Terminology: An assembly is a set of chromosomes that are used to represent an organism’s genome. Assemblies can be obtained from a single individual, as is the case here, or from multiple individuals as has been done to produce a human reference assembly. They usually represent a mixture of haplotypes rather than a single one. A haplotype is a set of genes that were inherited together from a single parent; it’s typically a set of alleles from the same chromosome. This is fine for homozygous, haploid and highly inbred species but insufficient for heterozygous, diploid or polyploid species. Combining two haplotype assemblies produces an assembly that contains two copies of each allele, making it a diploid assembly.
Karine Viaud-Martinez, Senior Manager – Clinical Genomics Laboratory Services at Illumina, added that the dolphin’s genome “will provide the structure against which future data can be compared. Think of the genome we provided as a closet bar. Without that bar, your clothes would be a pile on the floor and it would be difficult to make comparisons. The dolphin genome assembly provides the structure to allow us to make sense of data for populations of dolphin. This will be critical for identifying population boundaries and goals for conservation.”
Access to a SeaWorld dolphin was crucial to the success of this project
Studies like this require routine sampling of an animal, which makes them difficult to perform on wild animals. In fact, reliable access to healthy animals is crucial for scientists wishing to perform this kind of research.
Luckily, this study was supported by SeaWorld, which was able to supply DNA from their 39-year-old bottlenose dolphin called Sandy. Amazingly, the team at SeaWorld have trained their dolphins to participate in their veterinary care so Sandy actually cooperated when it came time to donate her DNA.
“You might think that getting good quality DNA from an exotic animal such as a dolphin would be a challenge,” said Dr Nollens. “It turns out that that was the easy part, because Sandy lives at SeaWorld… Sandy presented her fluke while a veterinarian drew a blood sample from a vein in her tail fluke. This freshly collected sample was then immediately processed to yield the high-quality DNA that was needed to assemble and sequence this dolphin genome.”
Karine said the team was very lucky because “Sandy is a dolphin that has had offspring while living at SeaWorld. This means that we have the opportunity to sequence her mate and offspring so that we have a snapshot of the way that the pieces of the genome are segregating during reproduction, critical information for understanding genetics of a species.”
The benefits of this research
This research will make possible more advanced and accurate genetic research on the bottlenose dolphin. This has implications for human medical research (especially because there’s a substantial syntency between the dolphin genome and human chromosome 1) but will also be important for dolphin conservation efforts.
“Genetic data of wild dolphins are often used for conservation research or management of wild dolphin populations. Sandy’s genome, and the information derived from it on gene flow between individual dolphins, will help conservation biologists know how dolphins are interacting within their population. They will be able to better select a gene or genetic marker for addressing their specific conservation question,” said Dr Nollens.
Karine added that “by using the reference to compare population data past and future, we are better positioned to understand which dolphins are interacting and reproducing successfully. Environmental DNA will help us to track their movements and better identify limitations to growth in their populations. The model of driving genome assembly and conservation projects through partnership with experts from diverse backgrounds has promise for many other species that are critically endangered.”
The project has produced a variety of benefits beyond the more obvious advances in the medical and conservation fields
“The best part of the project was how it brought not only the community, but the Illumina employees together. The project was cross-functional in nature so it required us to bring together people who might not have worked together on a project otherwise. This leads to unexpected cross-pollination of ideas and innovation. A wonderful consequence to this was that our volunteer from the Ocean Discovery Institute was brought on as an intern and eventually hired by Illumina as a result of the project,” said Karine.
Dr Nollens added that “the success of this type of collaborative research project highlights just what can be accomplished when we all work together.”

Vmax = Vrms/sqrt(2) is both true for a Full bridge rectifier in addition to an unadultered input sine wave. As I understand it, The Vmax = Vrms 2 refers to the output voltage of the half wave rectifier which would not help you with this problem. They provide you with an input voltage. Tamra had minor children living in her home when that was filmed. Not to mention, a daughter that was extremely sensitive to this type of conduct.Jumping on the "attack Kelly" bandwagon. Conspiring, once again, to get someone drunk just to humiliate her. After a successful first round of iron infusions, my second round was anything but! Here is my story of side effects with Dextran. I have now used this diet to lose over 100 pounds. It's not a easy diet but it does work and it works very well. I not saying reconcilation isn hard work or is the wrong choice, but it isn as hard as leaving. When you reconcile, you are only dealing with being cheated on. When you leave, you are dealing with being cheated on, and being alone. In obedience trials, dogs must follow exercises by taking commands from their handlers. The AKC regulates these exercises and judges award points based on those regulations. The difficulty of these tasks depends on the level at which the dog is competing. Stopping nail biting and putting the fingers in the mouth is essential to healthy nails and cuticles. The mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria and contains saliva which is an enzyme that breaks down skin. Nail biters often chew or nibble the cuticles which end up causing sore, irritated skin and can get infected very quickly. She can use socks to clean herself, but she can use yours for the gym. If she needs more, you guys can go get more or she can actually clean her rags instead of her reaching into your or hers actual socks you wear. (since she was super on top of the laundry im gonna say that she prob did wash them and resue them.). Then a few months ago, I was watching an episode of Bondi Vet where one of the vets visits the Rarotonga veterinary clinic to help out. And there a beauty shot of that same little house, still painted in those bright colors. Really made me smile to see it again and to see that the producers/cinematographers were similarly inspired by it. And there are shining gates and an immoveable threshold of bronze having unending roots and it is grown of itself (25). And beyond, away from all the gods, live the Titans, beyond gloomy Chaos. But the glorious allies of loud crashing Zeus have their dwelling upon Ocean's foundations, even Cottus and Gyes; but Briareos, being goodly, the deep roaring Earth Shaker made his son in law, giving him Cymopolea 서귀포출장샵 his daughter to wed.. It also might be a good idea to put your phone or alarm far enough away from you that you need to get up to turn it off. That might help you wake up fully rather than falling back to sleep after turning it off. I don know if this is useful at all, but I struggle a lot with sleeping and that basically how I force myself to wake up on time.. Never said she needed to diet, lose weight, or stop eating. It took years! But it worked, and hopefully without a stigma or shitty feelings around it. She has never lost weight, she has always gained. However, After 서귀포출장샵 being told that I had a week to find other living arrangements post breakup, eventhough I had two kids to raise, I woke up and said never again will I be financially dependent on someone. In an instant I became the independent person I am now. Within a week I had my own place, the first time I had ever lived on my own.
